We’ve all been there: sitting on the couch at 12:15AM, watching infomercials on The Golf Channel, starting to think, “Maybe this is the miracle device that will turn me into a scratch golfer.” But that little voice in the back of our head says, “Wait, does it really work?”

With this exact situation in mind, I decided to start writing this new series: Training Aids That Work . I have had the opportunity to see and work with almost every training aid on the market, from $2 plastic gadgets to $25,000 launch monitors, and I know what works and what doesn’t from both personal and teaching experience. Slicing my irons is killing my game. The more I slice…the more mad I get = more sliced shots. Its killing me becuase it happens right when I’m having a great round.

I tend to get quick with the longer clubs. Driver, 3w and long irons. I think Tour Tempo could really help simplify things for me.

I bought the Tour Tempo app on the recommendation of a friend, and couldn’t be happier. Honestly, if you don’t win one with this competition, do yourself a favour and go out and buy it anyway. It has made a world of difference to my consistency. I’m really keen on getting the books as well as I’ve heard that they have some really good drills in there.

My hybrids, I’m making good contact but most of the time the ball goes left. I probably need some good ol range time with them

My wood game has so far existed without any recognizable timing mechanism. I either swing quick and hope the swing “contact points” come at the correct time, or I over-correct, resulting in a swing anywhere from awkward to downright lazy.

I have been always been told that I swing too fast. This would be a great tool for all of my clubs throughout the bag.

Tour Tempo SpeedBall – Review

(Written By: GolfSpy Matt ) There is no shortage of training aids that promise to increase your club head speed, but almost all of them fall into one of two categories: heavy clubs and wind resistance clubs. The Tour Tempo SpeedBall promises distance gains, but with a novel approach: adding resistance only at impact. So, will this be the trainer that helps you break into the ranks of the 300 yard drivers? Let’s find out…

Ease of Use/Set Up

The SpeedBall is pretty simple to use: set one of the targets on the base and swing one of the SpeedBall clubs at it. You will have to watch the videos to appreciate all the other uses, but once you see them, these different applications become obvious.

My one complaint is that it does get a little annoying to keep peeling the target off of the ball and setting it back up. That said, a “set” only takes a minute or two, so you won’t have to do it for very long.

Score: 9/10

Effectiveness

Let’s start with the feature that everyone will want to know about: distance gains. I used the SpeedBall as recommended, 3-5 sets every other day, for 3 weeks (I may have missed a day or two, but I kept to the routine as well as my 6 month old would allow). Did I see swing speed gains? Yes.

Here’s the data from my FlightScope sessions before and after my SpeedBall Training:

BEFORE: Swing Speed SpeedBall Training

Low: 98 MPH
Average: 100.5 MPH
High: 103 MPH

AFTER: Swing Speed SpeedBall Training

Low: 100 MPH
Average: 103 MPH
High: 106 MPH

TOTAL DIFFERENCE: ( +2.5 MPH in 3 weeks)

So…you probably won’t be seeing me at the ReMax Long Drive Championship, but I’ll happily take the 3 MPH boost after just 3 weeks. As with anything, I’m sure some of you will see greater gains, some may see less. I’m most curious to see where this will take me after more weeks of training.

Another thing that’s worth noting about the SpeedBall is that while you’re working on picking up speed, you’re also working on squaring the club face and hitting the sweet spot. If you don’t square the club face, the target won’t stick to the ball, and you get the privilege of chasing down the flying target. This is a nice way to remind you to square the face. If you do stick the target, you get to see whether the ball attached to the middle of the target (good) or the inner or outer third (bad). The ability to work on these two key elements – square club face and centered contact – while building swing speed definitely sets the SpeedBall apart from other swing speed trainers.

Finally, there are many other uses of the SpeedBall that are not immediately apparent (or at least weren’t apparent to me). The SpeedBall can help you to refine or change your club path, work on your weight shift, improve your sequencing, and improve your contact. And, of course, the SpeedBall is a great way to work on your Tour Tempo . All of these drills are explained in a series of videos that comes with the SpeedBall. These drills are going to be laid out in an app very soon for even easier use.

Overall, the SpeedBall delivered on its promise of boosting my swing speed while forcing me to maintain a focus on squaring the club face and hitting the sweet spot. It also proved to be an effective way to work on a number of other swing flaws.

Score: 30/30

The SpeedBall occupies a weird space in the training aid spectrum: it’s not something you would take to the range, but, to use it, you need enough space to make a full swing. For some people, that will rule out using it indoors because they don’t have high enough ceilings. And even if you do have the space, it’s rather noisy to use in a confined area. All of these logistical challenges work against the Longevity score of the SpeedBall.

The other major knock on the SpeedBall is that it isn’t all that fun to use. It’s repetitive, and consistently taking the target off, placing it down, and hitting it again can get old. I would equate it to working out or lifting weights: you know it’s good for you, but it’s not high on your list of things you want to do.

All that said, the SpeedBall has proven to be effective for me. While it may not be the training aid that I enjoy using the most, I do make an effort to use it regularly because I know it’s had positive effects on my swing speed. The demonstrable benefits keep the SpeedBall out of the closet and in the practice rotation despite its shortcomings.

Score: 15/20

The basic SpeedBall kit, containing the 7I-length Speedball club, the target, and the base, costs $119.95. The driver-length Speedball club costs $79.95, and the Power Module (the two targets with “tails”) are an additional $99.95. While the driver-length club is not totally necessary, I think most people will probably want the Power Module, so we can say that the SpeedBall ends up costing between $220 and $300. This price tag puts the SpeedBall well above our average price of $100 for a training aid.

In my opinion, this price ends up making the SpeedBall a good, but not great, value. Ultimately, it delivered on the promise of more club head speed, and, for some people, that’s priceless. It also has a lot of versatility, and it lets you work on numerous things simultaneously, so that elevates it above every other swing speed trainer that I know. While I would really like to see this whole package priced somewhere closer to $150, I still think the $220 mark is not totally unreasonable for someone dying for more swing speed.

The Peanut Gallery

The Peanut Gallery heard the SpeedBall before they saw it. I was in a teaching bay pounding away, and, one by one, they came in to find out what the noise was.

Overall, the reaction to the SpeedBall was a prolonged, curious, slightly skeptical “hmmm.” Everyone found the impact feel to be very unique and could easily understand the concept behind it. A few of them even sent the target into orbit which highlighted the need to square the club face. Though the concept and potential benefit were obvious, only a few of The Peanut Gallery members expressed an interest in doing more than demoing the SpeedBall. I blame a good bit of this on the noise it created in the small, enclosed teaching bay, and the rest on the fact that many of the Peanut Gallery members already have more swing speed than they know what to do with.

I did use the SpeedBall with a few of my students, and I found it to be a very effective way to work on certain issues without the concern of hitting the ball. The most notable success was with a student who had a severe reverse weight shift. I had no luck in getting her to shift her weight while trying to hit a ball, so we switched to the SpeedBall target and had better results. I’d be lying if I said it immediately cured her problem, but it was a valuable middle ground between where she started and where she wanted to end up.

Final Thoughts

Here’s the only sentence many of you will care about: the Tour Tempo SpeedBall helped me gain 3 MPH of club head speed.

The SpeedBall represents a totally unique method of building swing speed, and I have experienced the benefits firsthand. While this is great by itself, the SpeedBall takes it to another level by also forcing the golfer to square the club face and try to hit the sweet spot. If all that isn’t enough for you, there are a wealth of other drills you can do with the SpeedBall to work on other elements of your swing. While I think that a lot of people are going to pass because of the price, I expect that those of you do take the plunge will be very pleased with the results you get.

Yea, I’m lookin forward to goin out next year. I incorporated the TT tones into my practice regime about a year ago and it really tightened up my swing, especially my irons.

Matt, good overall review. I had read about the Novosels and signed up for the Tour School back in 2007. Excellent. I learned a lot, I was religious with my Tour Tempo workout, my clubhead speed improved and I shot my best score ever, a 3 under par 69! To this day I practice the Tour Tempo drills every morning and I am rewarded. At a now 65 years of age I can stay in “golf shape” forever with what the Novosels created.

Scott, that’s great that you got to go out to the school. I’m going to go out next year. What would you say are the one or two best benefits that you got out of integrating TT into your swing?

the number 1 benefit is experiencing my optimum tempo. the number 2 benefit is increased clubhead speed. I also found that if I concentrated on that tempo I didn’t have to swing hard. Number 3 benefit was centerface clubhead contact. You are going to enjoy the Tour Tempo School, cause your swing and tempo get better!

had the speedball a couple of years ago. good training aid, i was happy with it .. but only downside(for me anyway) was that the part of the training aid that you actually hit, eventually(after about two months) fell apart. The stitching separated and the foam inside the thing just kind of deformed….

Great review Matt. I live in AK, thats Alaska not Arkansas, and no I don’t know Sarah Palin, but we have a very short golf season here and I try to keep my swing in shape through the winter, this seems like a very good aid for doing that and I like the idea of getting the feel of squaring the club. If they could come out with a package set that would be something, I think, that would be more appealing than buying it in ones and twos. Maybe GolfSpy can talk to the manufacturer and get one put together for all of us….. Maybe? Thanks guys keep up the great work.

I’m a tour tempo fan but this aid looks clunky.

Novel idea here but I don’t think it’s much different than the “gotcha ready” swing weight at the end of the day. This is a bit different, adding weight to the actual impact vs just adding weight to your club.

3mph could have come from getting loose after 15-20 swings. I applaud the new idea but I’m not a buyer.

I guess I should have been clearer: the 3 MPH gained was after 3 weeks of using the SpeedBall. Those numbers were not from the same session at all. I had two sessions before I started the program and averaged them to create the “Before” numbers, then I did the same thing after the 3 weeks of training. I’d like to think I/we have earned enough credibility that you wouldn’t expect that kind of garbage from our testing but apparently not.

The SpeedBall is as different from putting weights on your clubs as hitting a punching bag is from holding a dumbbell and extending your arm.

Brian, as one who’s played the game for 44 yrs(I’m 52yo) and I currently play to a GHIN 1.8, and having seen most of the swing “aids” released over the years, in speaking to the Novosels prior to purchasing the SpeedBall, I incorporated it for two reasons, #1, to work on accelerating THROUGH impact and #2, work on squaring the clubface AT impact. This is the best device/aid that I have encountered to isolate and work on these parts of the swing.

Increased swing speed would be secondary, though obviously a nice by-product, of using the SpeedBall. I am in no way affiliated with MGS and speak only of my experiences. I would have to agree with Matt in that the SpeedBall is nothing like the doughnut rings that I believe that you’re speaking of. The weight of the SpeedBall clubs is inconsequencial to the performance of the aid, and Tour Tempo doesn’t even mention weight, though I’m noot 100% sure of that.

As I said in my review, if accelerating through impact and squaring the club face at impact is critical to you or your game, I believe that this aid is the best device out there to assist in ingraining that in your muscle memory. If it’s not, or you are happy with these two areas of your swing, then the SpeedBall would probably not be of any value to you.Also, if your primary goal is to increase your SS, while the SpeedBall obviously does that as a byproduct of accelerating the clubhead through impact, it would not be the first device that I would look to. Repeat after me: Square clubface & accelerate through impact. Most of the amateurs(92-95%) that I observe could use help in at least one and usually both of these areas. Most would benefit from this aid however there is a reason that the average amateur score is still around 100.

People who keep doing what they’ve always done keep getting what they’ve always got.

The Best this Season

Matt, as always, excellent review. As Matt stated, the SpeedBall is an excellent aid in, #1, assisting in accelarating THROUGH impact, versus the vast majority of amateurs, who are either at maximum speed or deccelarating THROUGH impact. Not focusing on a ball, at least for me, helps me concentrate on the accelaration through impact. This really is easy to pick up when you’re not thinking “ball, ball, ball” and it should add an extra 3-5mph w/out really doing anything more than comitting the move to muscle memory, which the SpeedBall does easily.

The second benefit of the SpeedBall, and really for me at this stage of my game, the maost critical,is the squaring of the clubface through impact. It goes with out saying that this is the be-all-end-all of the golf swing, ie., having a square clubface at impact, regardless of how you got it there.

There are two benefits to the SpeedBall swing aid that are hard to quantify, though I give big Kudos to the Tour Tempo family, and I mean that literally, because if you have any questions, problems or issues with any of the Tour Tempo products, you are dealing with the Novosel family, most likely John Sr. or Jr. They are a class act. They’ve put everything that they have into their products, and they’ll give you everything that they have to assist you with their products & your game.

The second benefit is the fact that the SpeedBall is made 100% in the USA. And in speaking to them, they found the quality to be superior to farming it out to China, Russia, etc. The day may come when they don’t have a choice, to remain competitive, though for now, they’re giving you a product made by American hands. I’ll pay a little extra for those hands. I’d hope that you guys would too.

Hi, John, I am sorry to keep flooding you with emails, but I am just so excited about your TT Force book. Wow! And I am only through two thirds of the book. I just finished the chapter about the case studies and the things required to enhance speed. I don’t do any of those things now! All four of the drills (e.g. the arms up drill) are places where I know that I am deficient. In six weeks (or whenever we get together) I will be much improved in all of them.

I have never seen any book that delves into long hitting as well as this book does. Hopefully, when we get together, you can fine tune, or even gross tune, my swing for some added pop. I will try to not keep alarming you with every revelation that I come across in Force.

Thanks for a great book. For what it’s worth, while I got a lot out of the initial part of the book, these latest couple of chapters have been eyeball popping. I can’t wait to get back to the book.

Putting Tempo: The Rhythm of Better Putting

Putting is so simple yet so complex at the same time. One of the most important topics but not often discussed is the need for the right putting tempo .

The right putting tempo will improve how the putter head moves and ensure good speed control from all distances. Because let’s face it, is there anything worse than when your first putt ends up way short or too long on a lag putt. Then you’re faced with a tough second putt and unfortunately a lot more total putts per round .

When you master the tempo of your putting stroke, your speed control will improve like never before. Today we’ll discuss a great drill, why most players fail with a consistent stroke, and how tempo can help you become a great putter.

Putting Tempo 101

In an old YouTube video called “Secrets of the Short Game” by Phil Mickelson he said that most amateurs do two things incorrectly with their putting stroke.

First, they take too long of a backstroke, which leads to deceleration and missing a lot of putts short. This is from inconsistent rhythm and altering their tempo based on the length of the putt. Second, they under-read putts 90% of the time which makes it nearly impossible to make a lot of mid and long range putts.

To make more from short range and make the hole feel like a bucket, you need acceleration with the right tempo.

Short Game Tempo

So, what is the correct tempo for putting?

According to the book Tour Tempo 2, the short game tempo is 2:1. This means the backswing for chips/pitches) is twice as fast as the downswing. For putting this means the backstroke is twice as fast as the forward stroke.

This is a big difference from a normal tempo on the full swing which is 3:1. This concept is discussed in detail in the original book, Tour Tempo , and one of the best golf books you can read. When you master your tempo – with a driver, irons, and putter – your game will change.

So first things first, putting tempo is faster than a full swing.

Here’s the thing, great putters have the same tempo for all putts – whether they’re 5 or 50 feet. The only thing that changes for different length putts is the stroke length. Longer putts require longer strokes and shorter putts require shorter strokes.

But the tempo does not change. Unfortunately, most everyday golfers alter their tempo to try and putts of various lengths. This is one of the most common reasons why so many golfers struggle on the greens.

What’s the solution?

Measure your tempo with one of two golf apps to finally understand the perfect tempo and practice until it becomes habitual.

Here’s how…

Download Tour Tempo

Tour Tempo is a great book (as is the sequel) but the app is even better. This is a paid app in the App store but has different voices and tones to help you understand both long and short game tempo. Inside the app it’s easy to set the tempo to different speeds while maintaining the proper tempo for long or short game.

After downloading the app select the short game tab and choose voice or tones.
Then, select your speed (ex. 14/7, 18/9, 22/11) as some golfers are slower or faster than others.
Finally, use it in practice to develop a more consistent putting tempo. Plus, don’t forget to use it with your full swing too.

Please note that there are different speeds but all have the same tempo (2-1). Here’s how they described this concept in the book, Tour Tempo 2.

“Good putting tempo is invariable. If your optimal stroke is 18/9, you should time out at .90 seconds from takeaway to impact on every one of your putts. It doesn’t matter if the putt is a four-footer or a cross-country lag putt. The tempo stays the same.”

Use a Metronome

While I’m a big fan of Tour Tempo, it’s not the cheapest app. If you want to save money, opt for using a free metronome app instead. If you’re like a lot of people you might be thinking, what is a metronome anyway?

According to Wikipedia, “A metronome is a device that produces an audible click or other sound at a regular interval that can be set by the user, typically in beats per minute (BPM). Metronomes may include synchronized visual motion. Musicians use the device to practice playing to a regular pulse.”

While these devices were originally used for music, they’re also an underrated golf accessory. Plus you don’t need to buy a physical metronome anymore as there are free apps that do the same thing for you.

Here’s how to use it to master your putting…

Download a metronome app on your device.
Then, test out different beats per minute to find what works best for you.
Most players will benefit from BPM that is between 85-110 but don’t be afraid to experiment.
Keep hitting putts in practice to test out speed control and find the BPM that is right for you.
Make sure to save that number and use the app in the future when working through putting drills.

Putting Tempo Drill

To make a metronome even more effective this is a good putting drill from JJ Putting on YouTube . Here’s how to get started…

Download the metronome app if you haven’t already.
Place three tees in the ground in a straight line like a ladder – each tee is about two feet apart (or slightly less). The further you separate the tees the longer you will hit the putt.
Set your phone or table with the app in front of the middle tee and grab three golf balls.
Putt next to the middle tee and play the metronome app between 85-110.
With each beat you want to try and hit it each tee for proper timing. Focus on speed more than anything else and adjust as needed.

Most golfers will feel this is quite fast but as you can match the beat with the tees and you’ll get your speed dialed in no time. The goal isn’t to try and make putts with this drill, simply dial in your tempo. Recreate this feeling without a ball then with golf balls to create a cluster of balls in nearly the same place on the putting green.

While there is a preferred tempo, there isn’t a perfect speed as all golfers are slightly different. Keep your smart phone on the green near the golf ball you’re hitting so you can test out different speeds.

How hard should you hit a putt?

One of my oldest coaches always said that a putt that is short has 0% chance of going in. He’s not wrong either – but the problem is that some golfers take this advice too literally and try to bang every putt in the hole.

Here’s the thing, the harder you hit a putt, the more you shrink the hole.

This is why you want to try and make putts with a dying pace as the hole will catch it more often. If you hit it too hard you’ll get a lot of burned edges and lip outs. The proper speed if you do miss is to get the ball past the hole by 12–18 inches.

How do you hit consistent putts?

Hitting putts with consistency comes from the proper ball position when putting , finding a putter that is suited for you, a good pre-shot routine, and the right tempo. A tempo and rhythm you can repeat with your eyes closed is truly one of the most important parts.

My Experience

Ever since I read the book Tour Tempo and the followup, Tour Tempo 2 it’s had a big impact on my game. The second book is all about short game tempo which I never knew was different from long game tempo. Speeding up my tempo from inside 60 yards and on the greens has helped my strikes and overall consistency.

Ever since I read the book and downloaded the app I’ve shared it with my friends and fellow golf buddies too. I can’t tell you how many times I’ll play with guys who have a slow tempo which leads to a jabby, non-fluid putting stroke. Using the app and/or a metronome can help you dial in your putting tempo for more consistency on the greens.

If you’re going through a putting slump, work on your tempo more than anything else. I promise it can have a big effect on gaining more confidence on the greens.

Final Thoughts

Putting is one of the most important parts of the game but oftentimes the least discussed. But when you start to master your flat stick, everything in your game can change. Plus, there’s nothing worse than hitting the ball well all day only to miss putts and end up 3 putting all day.

To hit consistent putts and hopefully have fewer per round make sure to:

Record your putting stroke regularly.
Work on your tempo consistently for a solid strike.
Spend a lot of time practicing putts inside five feet.
Develop a pre-shot putting routine to putt more consistently and perform under pressure.

I’m confident that when you develop a 2-1 tempo, your putting will improve faster than ever. Plus when you add in a metronome into your practice routine you’ll be more consistent than ever.

Putt got to the hole and actually rolled back an inch. I didn't hit it hard enough but there was also a little hump around the entire hole. Ended up shooting an 84. My putting was horrible, with 37 putts. Also, I've never had a ranger rush me like that. I was pissed.

I'm a relative beginner, and started using Tour Tempo after reading the book over the winter. I started right off with the 24/8 tones, which was actually much slower than my swing. No wonder my friends said I looked like I was trying to kill the ball! I'm not a long hitter by any means, but after a large bucket of a 6 iron just trying to ingrain that tempo, my average distance with that club went from 125 to 145-150. I haven't tried it with the driver yet, as that beast is nothing but a slice machine for me. Just trying to really ingrain the feel of the smooth tempo and transition, along with the 78 other swing thoughts I have from reading too many threads online.

Shot 80 today. Felt really good and it could have been better but I missed the green way too many times on shorter shots.

I agree with what you're saying. If you have a slow backswing like most amateurs, even the 27/9 seems impossible at first.

Have the app and deleted it off my phone from frustration. Reading this is making me want to re-download it and really give it a try. (more than 10 min) Thanks. Good luck with it.

Other than that it allowed me to play some really good golf. Eventually I moved on to a more pivot driven swing (less conscious use of arms and hands). I still recommend Tour Tempo to people though. Great method. I bought all the Tour Tempo stuff and was pretty disappointed. I started with short clubs and no ball for about a week or two before even trying it on the range. I did feel an immediate increase in clubhead speed however I felt this was due to shortening the backswing more than anything else. (Anticipating the tone made me shorten my swing), and that's what I credited the higher swing speed to. However I did not like how I was hitting the ball. So I gave up on it. I'm glad you had a good go with it. It's something I may try again, but to be fair, I haven't heard too many long term success stories with it. I have found most people are like me and gave it up. I bought the whole kit too... DVD's, ear device, book, etc. I'd love to find some real success with the device!

i like alot of tour tempo's stuff but have never really got down to applying it. i think there are generally on to something good. was watching horschell on weekend and seems like he has superfast tempo. i am skeptical of some of their analysis though. i would much rather have some software/service where your driving range swings can be analyzed for tempo as opposed to listening to tones.

Not something I use every day, but I do go to it frequently when I'm feeling off, particularly when I notice my transition getting a little too quick. As fast as the TT swing felt at first, now it really slows down my backswing to a comfortable pace. I've got the iphone total game app, and while i really don't use the short game part, I'm a fan of the product.

I will notice a slow deliberate backswing and ask someone to pick a favorite Tour player. 8/10 will pick Freddy. I'll put the Am and Freddy side by side and sync the beginning of the takeaway. In most cases, Freddy has hit the ball before the struggling Am has finished their backswing and they complain of being "quick." Quick is a 5:1 and not a 3:1.

Some may find this odd but I play some of my best golf early in the season when I'm not thinking about much and just trying to have a smooth swing. The less swing thoughts the better. [/quote] Freddy is specifically used as an example in the second book as a "slow and effortless swing". Slow and smooth to him just happens to be much faster than most amateur players. His tempo is 24/8 with about 115mph ss with his driver.

You and John Novosel should be commended for the thought and innovation that went into your respective products.

[/quote] I was really surprised when John Jr. was the one who gave me my tempo ratio and some pointers on my swing. I never thought they would actually ask for a swing video. I just thought they might have some advice. Also, if you haven't read the second book then you should. It's really great for short game tempo but also has a lot more information about the initial Tour Tempo including a lot of player research from the years after the initial book came out. Great stuff. For the Tiger lovers there is a whole chapter on one of his seasons and his tempo throughout and his performance in those tournaments.

When he was up 1-2 strokes with 3 holes left he said he thought only about tempo to avoid bad swings.

[/quote] Is it the Tour Tempo or just a faster backswing that helps? I found that having a fast backswing and what feels like a really slow transition is really important for me. It might be the biggest break through I have made on my own.

Just an update. I had a few bad rounds recently and my swing felt all off, shot 90, 88, 94, 85 last weekend on a golf trip at some tough courses. I couldn't find the fairway off the tee. I practices a bunch with the tour tempo tones this past week. I shot an 81 this morning and my swing felt balanced and 'smooth' and I hit a bunch of fairways and if I missed it was by a few yards. Fun day!

3 weeks later...

^ I'll add in an update as well. I had a decent period of hitting the ball, but got away from a solid tempo by trying out too many different things with the backswing and transition. As a result, I was hitting a lot of pulls and saw my average distance drop. While at the range last week, I started griping under my breath over some more bad pulls (and a few driver slices) and the golfer in the next bay chuckled and said that the range balls never did anything to me, there was no reason to try and kill them the way I was. I laughed it off, but went to my car and grabbed my iPod and headphones. Sure enough, playing the 24/8 tones made me quickly realize I was once again WAY TOO FAST with my transition and downswing. As soon as I slowed down to the tones, I was able to work my whole body, as the faster "kill the ball" swing was all arms which resulted in a lot of OTT swings. Just listening to the tempo tones allowed my to clear my mind and slow everything down, resulting in my downswing being more in sync and (you guessed it) more distance and tighter dispersion.

Grammy-nominated artist GloRilla will serve as a special guest on the “Hot Girl Summer Tour,” which will mark Megan’s first-ever, headlining tour in arenas across the globe. The Memphis-born hitmaker, who has delivered award-winning hits such as “Tomorrow 2 (feat Cardi B),” “FNF” and “Yeah Glo!,” will join Megan on the domestic leg of the tour.

The tour will kick off on May 14 in Minneapolis and make stops at several major cities across the United States – including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, a hometown performance in Houston and many more – before wrapping up in Las Vegas on June 22. The international leg of Megan’s tour will begin in Glasgow, Scotland on July 4 with additional shows in England, France, Germany and Ireland.

The tour comes after her latest song “HISS” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February. “HISS” also became the first-ever, solo female rap song to debut No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 and, as a result, Megan now owns the record for the biggest first week for a solo female rap song in history.

The achievement signified Megan’s third No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, following her other chart-topping hits such as “Savage (Remix)” with Beyoncé and “WAP” with Cardi B. The song was Megan’s second solo release via Hot Girl Productions – her independent music and entertainment entity.

Earlier this year, Megan and Warner Music Group announced an innovative agreement that enabled the Houston native to maintain her independence as a musician while also having access to the music company’s robust global services, ranging from radio promotion to marketing worldwide. Taylor Swift fans who’ve been hankering to finally see her filmed performance of “Cardigan” won’t have to wait until her “ Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” supercut premieres on Disney+ Friday evening. A portion of “Cardigan” is being made available as an exclusive clip on Apple’s App Store.

The “Cardigan” clip was given a late-night release on the Apple platform Wednesday morning at 3:01 a.m. ET/12:01 a.m. PT, ensuring that the 13th day of the month did not pass by without a fresh development.

Swifties can view the “Cardigan” clip either by firing up the App Store on their iPhones and looking under the Today tab or by following this link .

The full version is one of five songs added to the newly expanded, streaming edition of “The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” that were not in previous cuts of the concert movie. This extended cut premieres on Disney+ Thursday at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET.

Besides “Cardigan,” the long cut coming out Thursday night will also include several acoustic songs that Swift played as surprises during the run of shows filmed at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium last August. She is sequentially announcing what those “secret” songs are on a morning-by-morning basis on “Good Morning America” this week. “Maroon” was the first of those numbers to be announced during a “GMA” spot on Tuesday.

Vampire Weekend Did Not Make a ‘Doom and Gloom Record’

On its fifth album, suffused with thoughts of 20th-century New York City, indie-rock’s pop maximalists get noisier — but it’s a journey out of negativity into “something a little deeper.”

From the first seconds of Vampire Weekend’s new album, “Only God Was Above Us,” it’s clear that something has changed. “Ice Cream Piano” starts with hiss, buzz, feedback and a hovering, distorted guitar note — the opposite of the clean pop tones that have been the band’s hallmark. It’s the beginning of an album full of startling changes and wild sonic upheavals, all packed into 10 songs.

The new album, like all of Vampire Weekend’s work, is meticulous, self-conscious and awash in musical and verbal allusions — sometimes direct, sometimes cryptic. But it’s also a broad pendulum swing from its 2019 release, “Father of the Bride,” a leisurely, jam-band-influenced sprawl that ran nearly 58 minutes. “Only God Was Above Us,” the group’s fifth album, due April 5, is eight songs and 10 minutes shorter.

“With every album we have to push in two directions at once,” Ezra Koenig, Vampire Weekend’s singer and primary songwriter, said in a recent interview. “Sometimes that means we have to be poppier and weirder. Maybe with this record, it’s about both pushing into true maturity, in terms of worldview and attitude, but also pushing back further into playfulness. There’s a youthful amateurishness along with some of our most ambitious swings ever.”

Koenig, 39, described the new album’s sequence of songs as “a journey from questioning to acceptance, maybe to surrender. From a kind of negative worldview to something a little deeper.” Ultimately, he said, the LP is optimistic. “It’s not a doom and gloom record. And even if there’s songs where the narrator is trying to figure something out or feels confused, that’s not all. That’s part of the story — it’s not the thesis of the album that the world is dark and horrible.”

The album also exults in musical zingers, non sequiturs and startling off-grid eruptions. The songs often morph through multiple changes of tempo and texture, riffling unpredictably through indie-rock austerity, orchestral lushness, pop perkiness and hallucinatory electronic studio concoctions, like the cascade of wavery, overlapping piano lines in “Connect.” Where “Father of the Bride” had a folky openness, “Only God Was Above Us” is crammed with ideas that gleefully collide.

Ever analytical, Koenig mused that Vampire Weekend’s albums each reflected patron saints. He named Paul Simon for the band’s self-titled 2007 debut , Joe Strummer and Sublime for “Contra” from 2010, Leonard Cohen for “Modern Vampires of the City,” and the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, along with Phish, for “Father of the Bride.” The new album, he said, may reflect a short-lived tour he didn’t get to see: the 1997 pairing of Rage Against the Machine and Wu-Tang Clan, which reached the cover of Rolling Stone .

“Distortion, heaviness, hardness,” Koenig said. “We were drawn toward those qualities on this record in a more direct way than ever before.”

Koenig spoke via video from his home in Los Angeles. Behind him — from the collection of his wife, the actress Rashida Jones — was a wall of photographs by the artist Taryn Simon from the project “Contraband” : bootleg DVD boxed sets that were confiscated by United States Customs, arrayed in Minimalistic formations. Like Vampire Weekend’s songs, they neatly frame disruptive material.

Vampire Weekend has always had two distinct aspects — its fastidious album work and its frisky live shows — and may soon have three. (More on that later.) The central one is the music the band constructs in the studio, which is minutely tweaked and painstakingly considered. Vampire Weekend’s songs uphold a long-established tradition of concise pop songwriting. But even as it delineates clear verses and choruses, the band pushes every other parameter.

“With some types of art, you probably have to put a lot of thought into how to create layers of meaning,” Koenig said. “Songs are, by their nature, relatively short. They have repetitive hooks. Then if you want to go maximalist and fill it with production details and arrangements, you can. And if you want the lyrics to push out into some weird place, you can.”

Yet the basics of pop songwriting keep the band’s experimentation grounded. “You can zig and zag from verse one to verse two to verse three, but you keep coming back to the same chorus,” he added. “But now it’s recontextualized by the second verse. I think all that stuff is built into the format. It’s this great populist art form where you can get really out there but the structure holds it together.”

Beginning with the 2013 album “Modern Vampires of the City,” Vampire Weekend’s studio output has increasingly been a collaboration between Koenig and the producer and multi-instrumentalist Ariel Rechtshaid, who has worked on hits with Madonna , Usher , Haim and others.

“I’ve been part of making things that sound expensive and beautiful,” Rechtshaid said in a video interview from his Los Angeles studio. “But on this record, when the songs were at a certain stage, we were just, like, ‘This sounds exciting to us.’ It wasn’t a gimmick. It wasn’t like, ‘Here’s the decision to make something that feels noisy or dirty or distorted.’ It’s that the songs were emoting properly.”

The band and Rechtshaid have been working on — and reworking — most of the new album’s songs since 2020. Two tracks, “Gen-X Cops” and “The Surfer,” originated much earlier. The untamed slide-guitar line of “Gen-X Cops” came from Brooklyn sessions in 2012, while “The Surfer” includes much-altered elements of a song Koenig had begun writing with Rostam Batmanglij , who left Vampire Weekend in 2016.

“Sometimes you get lucky and the music, the production, the lyrics and the performance all come together and it fits on the record you’re working on,” Koenig said. “And sometimes, you know there’s something special about it, but you have to put it aside and just let time do its thing.”

Although Vampire Weekend’s members have settled in Los Angeles, its new album is suffused with thoughts of 20th-century New York City. Those were the decades before Vampire Weekend got started at Columbia University in 2006. “Weird, half-baked memories and pictures and thoughts and family history,” Koenig said. “That’s the version of New York that’s floating through this record.”

The opening tracks ponder conflict and disillusionment. “Classical” finds bitter power struggles hidden in history, noting “how the cruel becomes classical in time.” In “Connect,” the singer wonders, “Is it strange I can’t connect?,” mingling the personal and the online. The album eventually concludes with “Hope,” the longest song in Vampire Weekend’s catalog, a stately, eight-minute litany of disasters and injustices — “The sentencing was overturned/The killer freed, the court adjourned” — with a guardedly reassuring refrain: “I hope you let it go.”

The album title comes from a New York Daily News headline shown in the album’s cover photograph , which was shot by Steven Siegel in 1988 at a subway graveyard, inside a subway car turned sideways — an image that looks surreal but needed no special effects. One song, “Mary Boone,” borrows the name of the SoHo gallery owner who was hugely influential in the 1980s.

Another, “Prep-School Gangsters,” is named after a 1996 story in New York magazine about privileged students dabbling in the drug trade. “The prep-school gangster — these are the people who run the vast majority of institutions,” Koenig said. “It’s very possible, especially in America, especially in New York, that every now and then the prep-school gangster’s grandfather was once the disadvantaged youth, and that the disadvantaged youth’s grandson will be the prep-school gangster. And here they are in this brief moment of time, meeting together.”

“The Surfer” begins with a reference to “Water Tunnel 3,” a project to bring water to New York City from a reservoir in Yonkers. It has been under construction since 1970 and is far from complete.

“There’s that eerie but beautiful feeling that underneath this, the most populous city in America, there is an almost century-long project happening, where people are burrowing through the Earth,” Koenig said. “And then, classic New York stuff that everybody wants to talk about, the bagels and the pizza — it’s so good because of the water. Where does the water come from? It comes from upstate New York, far away. How does it get into somebody’s tap on the Lower East Side?

“It’s always been a slight obsession of mine,” he continued. “I like that idea about the underground. I don’t mean culturally. I mean just literally what’s underground.”

Vampire Weekend will soon be resurfacing to tour — a job far removed from the band’s finely detailed studio work. Real-time performing used to be a fraught prospect for such a perfectionist group. “I would hear other musicians talk about, ‘Oh man, you know, touring is tough, but then once you get onstage, all your worries go away and you’re just connecting with the audience,’” Koenig recalled. “And I’d think, ‘What are these people talking about? That’s when the worries start.’”

For its 2019 tour, Vampire Weekend expanded its stage lineup to seven musicians and vocalists, opening up more possibilities in the songs and relieving some of the virtuosic pressures. “Now, when we get together to rehearse, there’s a youthful, playful vibe,” Koenig said. “We’re always coming up with ideas that make us laugh.” The full band has been practicing since November for a summer tour it will preview on April 8 — performing a midday concert in Austin in the path of the full solar eclipse and sharing a free livestream .

Along with recording and touring, Vampire Weekend may soon unveil a third facet. Chris Baio, the band’s bassist, and Chris Tomson, its drummer, did separate video interviews from the studio space they share in Los Angeles — a converted medical office where Vampire Weekend started meeting in summer 2020 for weekly, Covid-distanced jam sessions, playing in separate rooms and recording hundreds of hours of music.

“The world had stopped working and a lot of what we normally do was just not being done,” Tomson recalled. “There was something about just playing with no expectation — to just play with my two very close friends without an agenda.”

Baio said, “It’s very rare for people in a band of our size to be alone together. No engineer, no tour manager, nothing like that. It felt like being at the outset of the band again. And we did that for three years and change, whenever we were all in town.”

Those sessions may lead to the emergence of a new trio that happens to have the same members as Vampire Weekend, performing unreleased material.

“We kind of have an imaginary back story for that band,” Koenig added. “It was a band that came out around 1989, 1990, and they were a little bit too punky for the jam scene and a little bit too jammy for the punk scene. And there’s a little bit of the Minutemen in there. The truth is, this is very premature because that band is still hashing out its sound. I don’t want to say too much.”

Could the unnamed trio open shows on Vampire Weekend’s tour? “That has been discussed,” Koenig said dryly.

“We’re just trying to create a sound that we’ve never quite heard before,” he had noted earlier. “That’s what keeps us going.”
