Screen Rant

Dc has the perfect answer for an incredibly frustrating time travel cliché (that even back to the future is guilty of).

When it comes to timeline shenanigans, the DC Universe is avoiding the pitfalls even the best time travel movies always seem to fall into.

  • The Flash is exploring dangerous parts of the DC Universe with the help of Inspector Pilgrim to solve cosmic mysteries.
  • The DC Universe faces chaos as timelines are affected by extra-dimensional threats, leading to new allies and strange events.
  • The Flash Family debates the impact of time travel on the timeline, using real-world principles to craft a compelling mystery.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Flash #7! The DC Universe is coming apart at the seams, but its avoiding one of the most infamous cliches in time travel stories. For the last several months, the Flash has been exploring some of the wildest and most dangerous parts of the DC Universe.

Aiding the Flash's mission is the shadowy figure Inspector Pilgrim . He's been assisting the world's brightest minds as cosmic phenomenons continue to pile up and have a drastic effect on the DCU. And while these oddities are affecting the timeline, DC Comics has a unique spin on one of the biggest cliches that pops up in time travel-based stories.

How the DC Universe Has Gotten Off the Rails

The DC Universe has always been a place filled with magic and unexplainable phenomena like the Speed Force. But things got a lot more weird when the Flash crashed through an atomic mirror during a battle with an upgraded Mirror Master. Wally West suddenly developed a new power he came to call ‘side-stepping’ . This power allowed the Fastest Man Alive to phase through different layers of reality and explore creepy new dimensions that were hidden in plain sight. Unfortunately, this discovery kicked off a series of strange events in the DC Universe .

Gorilla Grodd came to Central City with an army of soldiers in a series of attacks armed with powerful new technology. One of his experiments gained the attention of an Uncoiled, a terrifying killer monster from one of the hidden dimensions the Flash discovered. Thankfully, the Flash was saved by the Stillness, a group of cosmic researchers who were investigating yet another strange phenomenon, the Arc Angles. As the odd events began to stack up, a new ally presented himself to the Flash Family : Inspector Pilgrim, Science Detective.

Inspector Pilgrim was working with Mister Terrific to analyze the new cosmic disturbances that were racking up at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, things spiraled out of control, leading to the DC Universe being inundated with creatures from the various extra-dimensional realms. Wally teamed up with his former mentor Barry Allen, and the two Flashes raced around the globe to get things under control. What the two heroes didn’t know was that much of the chaos was actually planned by a powerful and unknown threat who planned to unleash a weapon known as the Crown of Thawnes onto the DC Universe .

The Flash Family Ends the Debate on Time Travel

In The Flash #7 by Si Spurrier, Ramón Pérez, Sofie Dodgson, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Impulse and Max Mercury are trapped in the hidden layer Max has come to call ‘Ickto’. The two heroes are under attack from a swarm of Uncoiled and unfortunately for the heroes, this place has impaired their speedster abilities. Thankfully, the two are rescued by the Linear Bureau’s enforcers, the Linear Men, who defeat the Uncoiled and take the Flash Family members to an extra-dimensional void to recuperate from their experience.

Pilgrim agrees that Bart’s assessment is correct, but he also points out that perspective is key

The duo meets Inspector Pilgrim, who brings Max and Bart up to speed on what it is that the Linear Bureau does. Pilgrim tells the speedsters that the Bureau is an “ atemporal organization devoted to the smooth running of a stochastic universe ”. But Pilgrim simplifies it by describing himself and his comrades as 'time cops'. Pilgrim informs Max and Impulse that something has changed in the DC Universe’s timeline . Reality is falling apart at the seams and Pilgrim sums it up in the clearest way he can: Someone has murdered the future.

As Max struggles to comprehend the weight of Pilgrim’s assessment, Impulse calls the entire thing stupid. Impulse calls it ‘bad sci-fi logic’, saying that if something changes the timeline, it does suddenly change or have a domino effect; the affected timeline will have always just been that way. Pilgrim agrees that Bart’s assessment is correct, but he also points out that perspective is key, noting that at quantum levels, outcomes are contingent upon observations, meaning that shifts to the timeline can be interpreted subjectively.

The DC Universe Avoids Repeating Back to the Future's Cliche

The concept of time travel is theoretical, but that hasn’t stopped numerous stories from experimenting with the idea. Back to the Future infamously popularized the idea of a malleable timeline, where changes could be witnessed and corrected. For Marty McFly, he could see the changes to his timeline through a photograph that saw his siblings disappear one by one. Avengers: Endgame went in a much different direction saying no changes could be made to the original timeline and that time travel only resulted in creating separate realities.

Inspector Pilgrim raises a solid point that in quantum mechanics, the outcome is different depending on how things are observed

Because of the fast and loose nature of time travel, movies and franchises have portrayed the notion wildly different. The film About Time dove into the cause-and-effect nature of changes to the past, but ultimately presented time as being very fluid. Interstellar dove into the theories of time travel centered around the idea of time dilation. And the excellent Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure showcased a world where time travel not only existed but changes to the timeline were already a solidified part of their history .

While all theoretical, Impulse is correct that time travel would behave a bit more like Bill and Ted than Back to the Future . But Inspector Pilgrim raises a solid point that in quantum mechanics, the outcome is different depending on how things are observed. The Linear Bureau would be able to see the DC Univere's history from a different perspective and recognize the changes done to the timeline . Changes made via time travel still permanently affect the timeline, but allow the story to do what it needs for the sake of the mystery of who killed the future.

DC Comics is Putting a New Stamp on Time Travel Stories

Since there are no real rules to it, time travel can be a difficult topic to write about. But by touching on a few real-world principles, DC Comics has been able to craft a compelling time-travel mystery. While humanity may never master traversing through time, the idea has created endless stories with many postulations about how it would work. And while some stories may go for a more cliched approach, the DC Universe is avoiding that with its unique take on how time travel works.

The Flash #7 is available now from DC Comics.

Since 2015, the Belmont girls’ rugby program has steadily gained traction, expanded awareness of the sport

Mia Taylor (right) and teammate Robyn Tonomura-MacDonald celebrated a goal in the 2023 Division 1 championship against Brookline in Milton.

The Belmont girls’ rugby team was weathered out of Thursday’s season opener against visiting Algonquin, a fate coach Kate McCabe expected given the incoming nor’easter.

But the Marauders practiced anyway Wednesday afternoon, in freezing conditions, leaving many frigid hands and fingers. Not exactly ideal.

Not that it mattered.

“I was on such a high,” senior captain Mia Taylor recalled. “After practice, in the freezing rain, I was like, ‘That was so fun.’”

Belmont, now in its ninth season as a varsity program, is 39-2-4 overall, with five state titles since the MIAA first officially recognized the sport in 2017.

The score in last year’s final: 59-0.

“I think,” McCabe said, with a pause when asked how that’s even possible, “it’s the hunger that these kids have to be really good at rugby.”

It’s been that way from the start.

In 2010, there was no girls’ team, but KJ Miller was so into the sport that she joined the boys’ team. McCabe, who was teaching at the school while playing Division I club rugby on the weekend, remembers Miller coming into her class one day completely overjoyed. She had just received her first black eye.

Rashunda Webb followed Miller a couple years later, and was an important, visible female presence on the boys’ team by 2014. When four girls signed up before the 2015 season, coach Greg Bruce asked McCabe to join as an assistant. But when word got out that McCabe was coaching on the boys’ team, 13 more girls signed up. So she started the girls’ program.

‘I can’t underestimate the value of having a large program and a lot of kids . . . invested in learning this game’

Belmont girls' rugby coach Kate McCabe, on the success of her program

Belmont’s Mira Gardner (center, No. 11) is flanked left by Melis Demirtas and pulled downright by Brookline 's Zoe Raybould (No. 10, right) during last year's Division 1 girls' rugby championship.

Belmont opens the 2024 season with 14 seniors, 41 returners overall, and 64 total girls in the program, which fields a junior varsity for freshmen and sophomores.

Senior fly-half Lucy Kabrhel , the position that carries the kicking load, both after tries and in open play, returns after a team-leading 88 points as a junior season, with 78 on conversion kicks. Senior Alli Caputo (65 points last season) joins Taylor (70) as a back, and though senior forward Sally Amer doesn’t score much, such is the nature of her position upfront, she “is a powerhouse,” McCabe said. “She does so much work.”

Most in the program had no prior experience with the sport. And that’s the whole point.

“Especially because it’s such a new sport, you go into it knowing that you’re going to learn and you’re going to fail,” Taylor said. “But the older players have been where you’ve been, and they’ll support you the whole way. That’s definitely something that differentiates rugby. In other sports I’ve played, it has not been that accepting of a community.”

Belmont has established what it calls “families,” a group of around 15 girls assigned every season from both the varsity and JV teams. Each family plays one another in scrimmages during practice, has its own name and chant, and on Thursday, ahead of Belmont’s first game of the season that was eventually postponed, each family dressed up for the game in different colors. “There’s a little bit of rivalry and it’s fun,” Taylor said, “but it also brings us together and it’s a great way to connect.”

It’s also a great way for older players like Taylor to pass on the Belmont rugby tradition to those in the JV program. One of the keys to success, McCabe said. The seniors lead the varsity team, sure, but juniors like fullback Robin Tonomura-MacDonald will also contribute. She earned playing time in the state championship as a sophomore last spring.

“When you ask, ‘How do we win so many games?’” McCabe said, “I can’t underestimate the value of having a large program and a lot of kids that are invested in learning this game . . . and they’re not doing it alone. They’re doing it together.”

Still though, the secret sauce for Belmont girls’ rugby is the love of the sport. Then and now. The inaugural 2015 season began with only workouts and practices. At the end, Belmont finally played an opponent — a scrimmage against Lincoln-Sudbury’s B-team. “I still have the picture I can see in my mind,” McCabe remembered.

Her team earned only a 10-10 draw. It did avoid a nor’easter that day, but Belmont girls’ rugby doesn’t care about those anyway. “You would have thought,” McCabe said, “they had won the Super Bowl.”

They’ve gotten pretty used to that feeling.

Conversion kick

▪ Two new boys’ programs have joined the MIAA and will compete in Division II this spring.

Concord-Carlisle is led by coach David Manion , an Australian who arrived in the United States in 2000 to play Division I club rugby. In between stints as a coach at BU and Tufts, he won a national championship with the Boston Irish Wolfhounds in 2003.

Manion sold C-C athletic director Aaron Joncas on adding rugby in 2022, and in their first season last spring, the Patriots played friendlies against JV teams from established programs.

With the help of assistant coach John Garofalo , Manion has 16 boys and two girls on the team in its first season in MIAA. Most are sophomores and had no prior experience playing the sport before joining. The Patriots will be captained by senior Kaden Johnson , whose younger brother, Rhys , is a sophomore on the team.

“For the kids to end the year and say they had a lot of fun playing rugby,” Manion said of his goals this season. “And for them to get exposed to the rugby culture, which is really unique.”

After participating in a friendly round-robin with Chelmsford and Malden Catholic on Wednesday night, the Patriots stayed around and enjoyed pizza with players from all three teams.

“I’m still mates with basically everyone I’ve played rugby with,” Manion said, “because you’re looking after them and they’re looking after you.”

Burncoat (Worcester) is also fielding a boys’ program in Division II this season. On the girls’ side, Cambridge enters its first season, making seven competing teams in the lone Division I.

▪ In a battle of defending state champions Friday night, Weymouth (Division 2) topped host Belmont (D1), 17-12, at Harris Field.

Belmont’s James McGovern (top left) prepares to put the ball into the scrum of Friday's battle between Belmont and Weymouth, the defending Division 1 and Division 2 state champions, respectively.

Sirius Black ran into the Gryffindor Common Room, looking for his friends. He found them sitting in a corner, doing who knows what, Sirius didn't care.

"Guys!" he said when he reached them. They just ignored him, as the were doing homework. That doesn't really happen alot when Sirius is around, but he was out about the castle doing something they didn't know about for the last few hours.

"Guys, I was just in the library-" he started to say, but Remus cut him off with a shocked expression and asked,

"You, Sirius Black, were in a library.. of your own free will. By yourself?" Sirius nodded, a confused look on his face.

"Who are you, and what have you done with my best friend?" asked James in disbelief. He then jumped up and started poking Sirius.

"Would you stop that Prongs, I was in the library looking up something totally, completely awesome , but I wont tell you what it is IF YOU DON'T STOP BLOODY POKING ME!" he shouted because through all this time, James was still poking him.

"Okay, Okay I'll stop... just tell us what this totally, completely awesome thing is that you found." he sat back down beside Peter, and Sirius sat down on the other side of the table, beside Remus.

"Okay, Marauders, hold onto your hats, because we are going to the future!" he said, grinning at his friends.

"How are we going to do that?" asked Peter.

"Well, you see Wormtail, I have found a spell in a really old book, and when you say it, you and all the people in the room will go exactly 18 years into the future!" he exclaimed

"And how exactly does it work?" asked Remus, who thought it sounded rather cool, but was bound to have some flaw.

"Well, you have to say it at exactly midnight, and when you say it, in the future you will be in the same room you were in the past."he explained.

"So if we said it when we were in the common room, we would turn up in the same common room, just in 18 years time? What if we landed on someone?" Remus was still trying to imagine what book Sirius had managed to find this spell in, he had never read it before, and he'd been through most books in the library.

"There most likely wont be anyone in the common room at midnight if its a school night, so we should do it after this weekend, maybe Tuesday?" asked James.

"Why not do it on Monday?" wondered Remus.

"Because me and Sirius have detention...again. Hagrid's bringing us and Snivelus into the forbidden forest for fighting, and I want to know what it's like in there." he answered. Remus shook his head. Only you would be excited to go into the forbidden forest at night, James.

"Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that... so is everyone in?" Sirius asked. He hoped everyone was, because he was going to do it anyway, but figured it would be a great Marauder adventure. James agreed wholeheartedly, and Peter agreed as soon as James did, but Remus was a still a bit skeptic.

"But what about here, will we just be missing here for however long we're gone, or what?" Remus always was the one to think things like this... it's good that he did, or the others would probably be expelled by now.. or worse.

"Oh yeah, when we say the spell, time here starts going way slower. So slow it practically stops, so if we were gone for a year, we would really only be gone for an hour or so" he told him. Remus nodded. "Okay then, I'm in."

"Right, so we do it on Tuesday then?"James couldn't wait for this, it would be some adventure, and they would find out a lot about the future.  I hope I'm married to Evans...  he thought, as he, Remus and Peter started packing their books, quills and parchment into their school bags. There was no point in trying to finish their homework now that Sirius was back, and they were all too excited to sit still for too long, knowing that they'd hopefully be in a different time in just a few days.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

PHOTO: Tyler Hanson, of Fort Rucker, Ala., watches the sun moments before the total eclipse, Aug. 21, 2017, in Nashville, Tenn.

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

Eclipse map, path of totality

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

ARPA-E Announces Innovation Agreement Outlining Vision for the Future of Electrified Airports at Technology Expo Hosted in San Antonio

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), the City of San Antonio Aviation Department and City Public Service Board (CPS Energy), and the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlining collective efforts to develop and promote technologies that include, but are not limited to, sustainable aviation, battery technologies and innovative battery storage solutions, enhanced electric vehicle (EV) charging, and power demand management technologies. This agreement marks the first time an international airport will work together with ARPA-E—DOE’s innovation arm—to accelerate the development and deployment of new energy technologies to decarbonize the aviation sector. ARPA-E Director Evelyn Wang, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, UTSA President Dr. Taylor Eighmy, and CPS Energy Vice President of Customer Value Karma Nilsson were all present for the signing hosted at Stinson Municipal Airport in San Antonio. “We are excited at this opportunity to collaborate and showcase innovative energy technologies that could transform the future of aviation,” said ARPA-E Director Evelyn N. Wang. “Today’s MOU signing is a step in the right direction to ensuring that these innovative technologies are developed, built, and integrated in America. Our hope is that this partnership will lay the groundwork to enable future electrified airports.” “We are proud to be a part of this innovative initiative that will ultimately benefit the San Antonio community,” said Rudy D. Garza, President and CEO of CPS Energy. “CPS Energy continues to look for ways to participate in electrification projects, especially for critical public infrastructure like the San Antonio International Airport. Projects like these furthers our commitment to finding new and sustainable technologies to enable our growing community and we are excited about the opportunity to work with our community partners to do so.” “This is an important agreement with the potential to shape the aviation industry of the future,” said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg.  “Researching the decarbonization of aviation and finding new sustainable energy models is important work, and I am proud San Antonio will be playing a leading role in this cutting-edge research.” “This is a unique partnership designed to promote transformative energy technologies and it propels the City of San Antonio’s Aviation Department to the center of innovation,” said Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports, City of San Antonio Aviation Department. “This is an exciting time to be part of the Aviation Team and planning for the future of aviation and our airports.” “This collaborative effort is an incredible opportunity for UTSA to partner with strategic industry leaders in evaluating electric aircraft, advanced energy storage and micro-grid systems to advance the adoption of sustainable multi-modal transportation technologies,” said UTSA President Taylor Eighmy. “Together, this collective will accelerate discoveries that will positively impact the local and regional economies while advancing technologies that change the world.”

To mark this historic milestone, the following ARPA-E-funded project teams were also present to showcase their technologies and share how their innovations could be integrated into future electrified airports:

  • Ampaire , who is setting new standards for sustainable air travel and eco-friendly transportation solutions, flew its cutting-edge hybrid electric EEL aircraft and  watch video of the aircraft here ;
  • Imagen Energy showcased ultrafast, compact electric vehicle chargers delivering efficient and cost-effective power solutions;
  • Natron Energy featured sodium-ion batteries that can safely store energy and efficiently deliver power on demand;
  • AutoGrid discussed a distributed energy resource management system that can help grid operators manage energy supply and demand fluctuations;
  • Quidnet Energy brought a wellhead to illustrate a modular geomechanical pumped storage systems that can utilize existing natural resources to store renewable energy over long durations; and
  • Texas A&M University Research Team  presented 3D-printed models of a motor and shared concepts for advancing efficiency in electric transportation.

UTSA and CPS Energy also presented research to leverage a city-scale grid digital twin to evaluate operational efficacy, ensure seamless interoperability, fortify cybersecurity protocols, and assess performance metrics of electric/hybrid aircrafts.

The MOU signed today will enable collaboration to identify research, development, demonstration, and deployment opportunities that will promote sustainable aviation technologies.
