Where to Eat
Where to stay, when to visit.
The Fountain of Youth is calling your name—just like it called to the Spanish colonizers more than 500 years ago. Maybe it's those gorgeous beaches, or maybe it is something in the water. Either way, there is lots to explore in this charming city on Florida's Atlantic coast. Check out this travel guide for St. Augustine before your next Florida trip.
What to Know About Florida's Historic Coast
Most people don't realize St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States. (It was preceded by Puerto Rican colonies; Pensacola, which was destroyed in 1559; and Fort Caroline in Jacksonville, Florida, destroyed in 1565.) Ponce de León claimed "La Florida" for Spain in 1513, decades before the Jamestown colony of Virginia, and long before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. Over the centuries, many cultures have called the city on Florida's Historic Coast home, including Native American, Spanish, British, French, and African.
Where to Find Historical Icons
Explore a historic fort.
One of the city's most architecturally significant structures, and also the oldest masonry fort in the country, the waterfront Castillo de San Marcos is truly a sight to behold. Built in the 17th century, the national monument is made of native coquina stones, which absorbed or deflected enemy projectiles, giving the Spanish an advantage. Climb to the top of the fort to see the incredible views of the city and waterfront.
nps.gov/casa , 11 South Castillo Dr, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Visit a Free-Slave Settlement
Just two miles north of Castillo de San Marcos, Fort Mose Historic State Park is the location of the first legally sanctioned free African settlement in North America. Learn about this important 40-acre historical site at the interactive museum, and stick around to spot bald eagles and blue herons.

Sip From the Fountain of Youth
Take a sip from the legendary fountain at Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park , which tells about the birth of St. Augustine, as well as the Timucuan people who preceded the Spanish by thousands of years. Walk through the lushly landscaped park (dogs are also allowed) to sample water from the bubbling fountains. Stroll the 15 acres of waterfront while you're there.

Step Back in Time
History comes alive in the Colonial Quarter in St. Augustine's historic district along St. George Street. Journey through the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries to learn about blacksmithing, watch a live musket demo, and climb the 35-foot watchtower for panoramic views of St. Augustine's bayfront and the historic Castillo de San Marcos.

Discover Flagler College's Historic Past
Fast forward to the early 20th century, when oil tycoon Henry Flagler developed St. Augustine into one of the country's first winter resort destinations. Paying homage to the city's past, the millionaire developer built the stunning Hotel Ponce de Leon (now Flagler College), with its opulent 80-foot domed ceiling and Spanish Renaissance architecture. In 1967, the hotel closed its doors, and the building opened as Flagler College in 1968. While the property is an active college campus, visitors can take a historic tour to learn about the architecture, stand in the domed grand lobby, and view 79 Tiffany windows in the dining room.

Take a Guided Tour
Explore St. Augustine by a horse-drawn carriage ride , historic walking tour , or hop-on-and-off trolley ride . Many tour operators can craft an experience to fit any taste, whether culinary, historic, or even paranormal (yes, we're talking ghosts ). Legend has it that St. Augustine is one of the most haunted cities in America. Climb the Lighthouse
St. Augustine Lighthouse is rumored to be haunted too, but during the day it's perfectly ghost-free (they only come out at night, right?) and a gorgeous site to see. Halfway between downtown St. Augustine and the beaches of Anastasia Island, it's the oldest navigational site in North America and home to a maritime museum. If you're feeling energetic, climb 219 steps to the top of the lighthouse for incredible views.

Where to Find the Best Beaches
Kick off your shoes on unspoiled beaches.
While Florida's Historic Coast is most famous for its storied past, leave plenty of time to kick back on the area's unspoiled beaches. Home to the popular St. Johns County Ocean and Fishing Pier , St. Augustine Beach offers a large oceanfront pavilion, splash and play park, sand volleyball courts, and plenty of seaside restaurants like Salt Life Food Shack .
Get in Touch with Nature
Just north of St. Augustine Beach, Anastasia State Park is a pristine stretch of sand with abundant wildlife and natural tidal marshes. There's a coquina quarry where laborers mined stones to build the majestic Castillo de San Marcos and other historic structures downtown.
In northern St. Johns County, Ponte Vedra Beach is famous for its historic and luxurious resort town feel. It's also the site where, according to navigational records, Ponce de Leon first set foot on Florida sand. View the exact spot at the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve , with more than 76,000 acres of protected coastal dunes, tidal lagoons, and forests. It's a gorgeous location to hike, bike, fish, kayak, picnic, and ride horseback. There are over nine miles of nature trails, as well as a prehistoric earthen burial mound, and 60 additional archaeological sites.

Tour the Food Scene
There are plenty of options to taste local flavors along Florida's Historic Coast. Culinary tours allow you to sample cuisine from the many destinations that have influenced the city's history, including Spain, France, Italy, Asia, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Check out The Tasting Tours and City Walks Food and Wine Tours . And you'll want to tour the St. Augustine Distillery , where you can sample small batch spirits in a restored ice plant dating back to 1917.
Dine with a Water View
Two crowd favorites equally famous for their water views and oyster bars are Meehan's Irish Pub & Seafood House in the heart of the historic district, and Cap's On The Water in Vilano Beach, which has killer sunset views of the Intracoastal Waterway to the west. The waterfront Aunt Kate's is a family-owned eatery with a tradition of serving Menorcan dishes, fresh seafood, and famous clam chowder for more than 100 years. The family's history dates back to Menorca island residents brought to New Smyrna as indentured servants. They fled the failed English Colony to safety in St. Augustine in 1768. And while the original restaurant succumbed to fire, the new building serves up the same great recipes right on the water.

Be Smart - Take This Cart! I have been to St Augustine many times and this was the best ever! The stories of the rich history were interwoven with relevant context that brought it to life. What we learned was fascinating! The efficiency of the cart/open vehicle is amazing - so easy to get around to so many places (not just downtown) and avoid traffic. It was the perfect introduction (and deep dive) to the area and set us up to explore after the tour based on our interests. P.S. We saw other tours drive by and every time I was glad we were on our EXPLORE Tour... and not theirs. Highly Recommend

Karen was an excellent tour guide. Very knowledgeable about the history of the city. Answered all of our questions and would recommend!
Karen (not that kinda of Karen!) picked us up right on time from our B&B. She was friendly and knowledgeable about the area. She expertly drove our clean golf cart around the area and showed us locations that Trolley & Trains can't access. A great way to spend a morning sightseeing in St Augustine.

We just had an amazing tour with our guide Mark. Mark was such a knowledgeable guide. I can't wait to visit again so I can do this tour again cause there's so much history here. Explore Tours should be happy to have Mark as a guide. Thanks
We visit St Augustine every year for the Nights of Lights to kick off our family's holiday season. This was the first year we chose Explore Tours and Pick Ups and we were excited for a semi-private experience for this fun evening. Our driver, Josh, started by saying that he doesn't follow any route and then handing us some glasses. Several people on the car attempted to sing carols, engage and celebrate the Nights of Lights tour. The driver didn't speak to anyone in the car except for the father sitting next to him and then only if asked a question. He offered that some bars had bad martinis and another restaurant was good for when you were hungover, great tips for the three teens/preteens and multiple families on the tour who signed up for a personable Nights of Lights tour. This was an incredibly disappointing and expensive experience. You'd have gotten as much, if not more, from an Uber driver through town. What's most disappointing is that in reviewing the company's past reviews, we were not the first to note the same concerns from the same driver. I'm sure he's a great person ~ but if you're going to drive a holiday tour through a historic city during the biggest festival of holiday lights for a living, being personable, knowledgeable about the history, excited about the holidays and engaging to the clientele who have paid for the advertised experience is a key component.
Our first visit to St Augustine for the Christmas lights. We saw all the trolleys but as it got dark was difficult to find the pickup stations. Our hotel recommended Explore Tours as an option. We are so glad they did. Our driver Andy found us even though we were not exactly at their pickup point. After giving us cookies his wife had baked and special glasses to be used at certain light displays...off we went. The smaller vehicle could get around easier than the longer trolleys and we got to know our fellow travelers. An absolute must if you are singing Christmas songs. We had a such a magnificent time! I know this was a special event, however our guide was so knowledgeable that a tour at other times of the year would still be great.
As a homeschooling mom, I'm always looking for fun ways to integrate fun and lesson planning. This tour offered so much interesting information with the most dynamic and informative tour guide, Tea.
We signed up for a private tour of the Nights of Lights. We were excited to bring our friends from Illinois with us. We had planned a special evening, beginning with dinner and culminating in a Special Light Tour. We were at the restaurant eating, when I got a call from Explore. The bus/ cart had broken down. They said they were sorry and would refund my money. OK. I asked them to recommend or help me book a trip with another company for that evening. They told me to look it up myself and I could call the places . They then went on to say that I probably wouldn't be able to find a tour for that night, considering how late it was. Really???!!!! What poor service!!! I recommend that you stay away from this company. There are lots of other reputable companies to choose from. What a disappointment !!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! It was really cold the night we used their service for a pick up and it only took a few minutes to get to us. Owner picked us up because her driver had called out. Extremely nice. Was closing early because she didn't have a driver but have me a number to get a ride back to our hotel from dinner. Planning on going back next year and will 200% use their pick up service again.
We had a great time with Randy as our guide for a Nights of Lights tour! He knew a lot about the history of St Augustine, took us to the best light locations and navigated the heavy traffic expertly! Would highly recommend!

15 Best Tours in St. Augustine, Florida
Located on Florida’s Atlantic coast, St. Augustine is one of the oldest cities in the country and was founded in the 16th century by explorers from Spain.
It’s also the oldest continually inhabited settlement other than those founded by Native Americans.
Sporting a small population, majestic beaches, and fascinating history, the quaint town is part of the much larger Jacksonville Metropolitan area.
For the first 200 years of its existence, it was part of the colony known then as Spanish Florida. It was the starting point for many expeditions that sought to uncover the golden cities purported to be in the area.
1. Old Jail Museum Guided Tour
Built in 1891, St. Augustine’s Old Jail wasn’t a place known for its comfortable accommodations and friendly staff back in the day.
The Old Jail was a repository for the area’s criminals for 60 years and is now listed on the National Historic Register.
This short but fun educational tour lasts for 45 minutes and includes an expert guide who’s up-to-date on the area’s history.
The tour will include actual cells for men, women and those poor souls in solitary confinement, as well as the quarters of the warden and his family who had the dangerous displeasure of living right upstairs.
2. Historical Experience in the City’s Colonial Quarter
With more history than you’re likely to find nearly anywhere else in the US, this guided tour to the city’s Colonial Quarter is a great way to get a hands-on feel for life hundreds of years ago.
Life back then was hard and dangerous; you’ll see how the town’s inhabitants lived day-to-day and entertained and protected themselves.
You’ll get to climb one of the fortified towers that held the colony’s sentinels and watch a demonstration of a live musket fire as well.
Tours start four times per day, last an hour or two, and are wheelchair accessible and family friendly.

3. St. Augustine’s Scenic Cruise from Orlando
St. Augustine is often referred to as America’s ‘Ancient City,’ and for good reason.
With all there is to see along this portion of the Florida coast, this 10-hour cruise is a great way to see some of the state’s most important east-coast sites like Castillo de San Marcos, the Lightner Museum and Fort Matanzas.
The tour includes narrated excursions around a few scenic islands and bays. You’ll also get the chance to plant your feet squarely on terra firma and explore some of the town’s ancient cobblestone streets that may just make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
The only things not included are food, drinks, and tips.
4. St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum
Scores of deadly pirates and shiploads of lost treasure have always played significant roles in the history of St. Augustine.
If you’re fascinated by this seedy past, there’s no better place to visit than the Pirate and Treasure Museum.
You’ll get an amazing insight into the area’s Golden Age, and what made the brave souls who called it home tick.
Over the years, the museum has won plenty of awards for its interactive exhibits and displays. In addition to a museum tour, you’ll have time to stroll along the old streets, stop into a few shops, and maybe have a bite if your stomach is growling.
Everything is included except food, drinks, and tips.
5. St. Augustine History Museum
With a history that reaches nearly 400 years into the past, St. Augustine is home to some of the most complete and well-done museums on America’s fascinating pre-colonial history.
It’s not well known that long before America was founded, much of its territory was claimed by the powers of the day, like Spain, France, and Britain.
The St. Augustine History Museum should be on your itinerary if you’re interested in learning about this little-known period in our history.
Exhibits include a Native American village, trading post, and a sunken galleon’s treasure. Tickets are good for the entire day and guided tours are available.
6. St. Augustine Trolley, Bus and Museums Combo
For those interested in experiencing the beauty and history of St. Augustine, this combo tour is a great way to spend your vacation time wisely.
You’ll explore the city and many of its major attractions, like the Old Jail, History Museum, and the Old Store Museum.
Many of the eccentric folks you’ll meet along the way will be dressed in era-accurate garb and going about their days much like those did in centuries past.
It’s fun and educational for the entire family, but especially so for the little ones.
The tour includes your bus and trolley transportation and entrance fees to all the historic sites and museums.
7. Inshore Fishing Excursion
Not surprisingly, Florida’s Atlantic coast is a hotspot for anglers the world over looking to try their luck against some of the ocean’s most toothy and finicky predators.
St. Augustine’s inland waterways – like the Matanzas and Tolomato Rivers – are teeming with redfish, sea trout, flounder and tarpon that can grow larger than a man.
Your captain will be fully licensed and an expert in connecting people and fish.
All the instruction and equipment you’ll need are included and you can choose the length of time you’d like to spend fishing.
Bottled water is included, but food isn’t, so be sure to plan accordingly.
8. Historic St. Augustine and Colonial Quarter Tour
With its historic significance, colonial-era Spanish architecture, and museums, St. Augustine is a town that really should be enjoyed at your own pace.
The historic quarter is where most of the town’s history comes to life. Many of the sites you’ll want to see offer great interactive opportunities for tour members who like to do more than just look and read.
The tour includes a musket firing exhibition which is a perennial favorite. Climbing one of the watchtowers and eating some historically accurate food are also highlights.
The tour is a pleasant mix of guided time as well as time where you’ll be able to see what you want and go at your own pace.
9. Sunset Helicopter Tour
Though St. Augustine’s magnificent sunsets are breathtaking no matter where you happen to be when the sun slips below the horizon, there’s something extra special about viewing them aloft in a sleek helicopter.
You’ll see one of the United State’s oldest cities from a vantage point that few will ever get to experience. In just a short time, you’ll cover dozens of miles of shimmering coastline.
For those diehard romantics looking to spoil their significant other with a once-in-a-lifetime experience, this tour is for you.
It’ll be unforgettable and you’ll be back on solid ground early enough to top it off with a romantic seaside dinner.
10. St. Augustine Oldest Store Museum
Maybe hundreds of years from now, tourists will visit the site of a Safeway or Target and marvel at the strange things us modern folks used, eat and wore.
Likewise, if you hitch onto this tour of the Oldest Store Museum, you’ll see the consumer products that were popular and available in centuries past.
The museum’s clerks will show you around and probably try to sell you some strange products that have long since fallen out of favor, mainly due to advances in production and product development.
Guns, tonics, and a host of other strange products are on show; you may meet the quirky proprietor too.
11. Haunted Night Tour
Though this evening tour only lasts an hour and a half, it packs enough of a spooky and eerie punch that 90 minutes will be plenty.
It’s family friendly and will take you to some places that’ll make the hair on the back of your neck stand at attention.
Your guide will be wearing a macabre costume which will heighten the effect when he’s revealing dark anecdotes from the town’s history.
Tours are limited to 10 participants so you’ll get a much more intimate experience. There’s always a bit of humor included, so in addition to being scared, you’ll also have a lot of laughs.
12. World Golf Hall of Fame
Florida is one of America’s golf meccas; once you get a look at some of the most popular courses, you’ll understand why.
St. Augustine is home to the World Golf Hall of Fame. For golf aficionados, a trip to the Hall of Fame should get a priority spot on your itinerary.
You’ll learn about the sport’s history as well as some of its most memorable characters.
The museum is full of great exhibits and paraphernalia, much of which show parts of golf’s history that aren’t so well known, like African American’s contributions to the sport long before Tiger Woods was even born.
13. St. John’s River Airboat Tour
With all of Florida’s inland waterways, airboats are great ways to explore lots of ground quickly. You can see the area’s majestic wildlife, like wading and predatory birds, manatees, and the slow-moving alligators – some of which can reach nearly 15 feet.
Tours include headsets so you can hear the guide’s comments over the roar of the boat’s powerful V8 engine.
The area is full of fascinating pirate and treasure stories, many of which are very real although they’ll sound like excerpts from an old pirate movie.
Everything is included except food and tips, and tours start throughout the day.
14. St. Augustine Ancient City Tour with an Interpreter
For those visitors who’d get the most out of a guided St. Augustine tour with an interpreter, this tour deal is a great choice.
Seeing and learning about the oldest continuously inhabited town in North America will be especially amazing when you hear it in your native tongue.
There are plenty of customizable options available, so you can choose what you see and how long you’ll spend on the tour.

15. Ticket to Potter’s Wax Museum
You might think that nearly 160 wax figures would melt in the sweltering Florida heat and humidity, but you’d be wrong.
Thanks to the wonderful invention of air-conditioning, Potter’s Wax Museum is full of figures of historical importance, such as Ponce de Leon and Albert Einstein to name just a few.
The museum has been open for nearly 70 years and was founded by a man who fell in love with England’s wax museums he saw on a trip as a child.

But are the ghost tours really worth your time? Well, that depends on what you’re looking for.

St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum
The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum features shipwreck artifacts, a wooden boat building exhibit and a 165-foot-tall lighthouse. The lighthouse, which was built between 1871 and 1874, is the oldest surviving brick structure in St. Augustine and has 219 steps. Some believe the site is haunted by several former lighthouse keepers and two young girls who died on-site in the late 1800s. This could be part of the reason why the lighthouse is visited by many of the city's ghost tours and has even been featured on the TV show "Ghost Hunters."
Recent travelers say one of the best parts of visiting the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum is climbing to the top to admire the scenery. You may want to bring a camera since you'll find breathtaking views of St. Augustine. However, there is a height requirement to climb (44 inches minimum), which some visitors with small children found frustrating.

Notable exhibits include unconventional items like shrunken heads, salt and pepper shakers, human hair and cigar labels. You'll also find traditional art pieces and collections with glass and antique furniture. The exhibits rotate, so even if you've been before, it may be worth visiting again.
Recent travelers said the museum's Spanish Renaissance Revival architecture and collections are a must-see. With four floors of exhibits, you can easily spend several hours exploring the property. And if you're hungry, grab a bite in the museum's cafe. Although it's only open for lunch, visitors say the food is delicious.

Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park
U.S. News Insider Tip: After your tour, take a short drive over to Magnolia Avenue. With dangling moss and towering oaks that lean over the roadway, it's often been called one of the most photographed streets in America. – Casey Feindt
Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is the site of St. Augustine's original settlement. Here, you'll learn about the Spanish settlers who arrived in the 1500s, as well as the Timucua, a group of Native Americans who resided in current-day southern Georgia and northern Florida. The Fountain of Youth, a mythical spring believed to have anti-aging properties, can be found in the park, as well as a planetarium, a blacksmith shop and a replica Timucua village. On the park's grounds, visitors will find white and blue peacocks (nearly 30 reside within the park).

Fort Mose Historic State Park Fort Mose Historic State Park free
Most St. Augustine visitors are familiar with the town's past as a Spanish colony from 1565 to 1760s, but few are aware of its role in America's Black history. Fort Mose was the first legally sanctioned free African settlement in the U.S., established in 1738.
During this time, Florida was governed by the Spanish, who had a long history of owning enslaved people. But slavery in Spain and its colonies looked different than it did in Britain's colonies. To Spain, slavery was primarily a political tool, so its views on slavery were flexible. As a result, people enslaved by the Spanish generally had some legal rights, including the ability to eventually purchase their freedom.
Villa Zorayda Museum Villa Zorayda Museum
Step into a faraway land at the Villa Zorayda Museum, which features Moorish Revival architecture largely inspired by Islamic culture. Eccentric, colorful and all-around striking, the Villa Zorayda Museum fuses Florida history with unconventional style.
The museum was built in 1883 by Franklin Smith, a Boston businessman, as a vacation home, and its unique design helped inspire much of the architecture in the surrounding City of St. Augustine. Art lovers will appreciate the museum's private collection of works and artifacts that have been curated for decades by the property various owners, including a rug crafted from Egyptian cat hair that's more than 2,000 years old.
St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum
St. Augustine has a vibrant history rooted in piracy, and, as its name suggests, the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum showcases stories from some of those very swashbucklers. The museum displays a variety of pirate artifacts, including the world's oldest "Wanted" poster, the world's only pirate treasure chest, and one of two surviving 17th-century Jolly Roger flags (that familiar black flag featuring a skull and crossbones). At the center of the museum, travelers can climb aboard a replica pirate ship with a helm and cannons.
Recent museumgoers say the attraction is fun and interactive. Others thought the small space was often too crowded and felt it wasn't worth the pricey admission.
Old Jail Old Jail
St. Augustine's Old Jail was built in 1891 to accommodate the city's criminals. Financed by railroad giant Henry Flagler, the jail was designed to blend in with the rest of the Ancient City's buildings and features Romanesque Revival-style architecture. In 1954, a year after the jail closed, the property reopened as a historic attraction. The facility was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
You'll be able to explore the different types of cells that inmates were housed in, including the maximum-security and solitary confinement areas. Interestingly, the sheriffs and their families lived at the facility when it was in operation; those quarters are also available to view as part of the tour.
Gonzalez-Alvarez House Gonzalez-Alvarez House
Despite a turbulent past plagued by enemy invasions, pirates and sometimes catastrophic weather, the González-Alvarez House is the oldest surviving Spanish colonial dwelling in the Ancient City.
Construction began on the González-Alvarez House in 1723, and by 1892, it was known by many as "the Oldest House in America," a title that is now heavily contested among historians. Semantics aside, experts agree that the home is one of the most historic sites in all of St. Augustine and offers a glimpse into what life was like in the colonial era.

Orange luggage tags are provided and are to be placed on your “checked luggage” (large bag). There is limited space in the cabin of the coach, so unless you require your carry-on bag while traveling, we will stow it in the luggage compartment.
Important Information:
New reservations will require a $250 per person deposit unless otherwise noted. As always, your deposit is still fully refundable for any reason until final payment. We are happy to accept cash, check (preferred) or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) for your deposit.
Throughout 2021 we limited capacity on all our tours. This policy was so overwhelmingly popular by Sunrise travelers, we have made it permanent. In 2022 and beyond, we will limit the capacity on our motorcoaches to 80%. Most Sunrise Tours travel on 50-seat coaches with extra legroom, which means guests will enjoy extra legroom AND at least 6-8 empty seats. In the rare cases when we charter a 55-seat coach, there will be at least 10 open seats on the bus.
Our popular on-board refreshment service on travel days will feature a variety of soda, beer, wine spritzers, juices and sparkling water choices served in recyclable aluminum cans. This is a safe and eco-conscious way for us to deliver the ever-popular Sunrise Tours “happy hour” on tour. We do not typically serve bottled water and ask that while on tour you be responsible for your own hydration and consider the Sunrise Tours drink service a welcome refreshment.

The 10 Best Things To See In St. Augustine, FL
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
We recently got another chance to visit St. Augustine, one of the oldest cities in the US. I’ve been fascinated with this Florida city for a long time because it has so much history and was home to some of the central figures in the development of Florida. So, today, I want to talk about some of the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL!
St. Augustine is old, really old, and is a place where lots of historical “firsts” happened. It’s a city full of interesting landmarks, beautiful beaches, good food, and sunny weather.
The St. Augustine area merges old-world American history, Spanish charm, and modern amenities to create a fantastic vacation destination for the entire family. The heart of the city is very walkable. You can visit almost all the major attractions by taking a hop-on, hop-off trolley that stops at the popular locations.
In this post, I’ll cover the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL, and give you some tips on how to make the most of your visit!
The Best Things To See In St. Augustine, FL
Visiting St. Augustine is always a lot of fun for our family. You know that walkability is very important to us when we travel. Therefore, it’s no surprise that St. Augustine’s walkability and tourist-friendly layout add much to our experience.
The town is relatively compact, with most major attractions located downtown or nearby. St. George Street is a pedestrian-only street that runs through the old city center. It’s packed with shops, restaurants, and fun attractions.
St. Augustine can get very busy, especially during holidays and weekends, when the city swells with visitors. The streets will get filled with people, and the pace of activity is fast, especially around St. George Street. When you travel, bring good shoes, water, sunscreen, and an adventurous spirit!
The Old Town Trolley Tour in St. Augustine
Before diving into my list, I want to quickly discuss the Old Town Trolley Tour . Throughout the post, I will mention that there is a trolley tour stop near various places. Therefore, it is an excellent activity for first-time visitors who want to get a feel for the area! The trolley tour stops at or passes by many of the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL.
The Old Town Trolley Tour is a hop-on, hop-off trolley that stops frequently at critical locations throughout the city. It comes around often and drops riders off at 21 different stops. You can get on and off an unlimited number of times all day long.
Purchasing an Old Town Trolley Tours ticket also gives you some discounts on local attractions. We used the trolley and enjoyed it. It gave us flexibility and the ability to cover more ground.
In the heat of the summer Florida sun, it’s also a welcome reprieve from walking. The trolleys are not air-conditioned, but they are open-sided. Most stops will probably be busy with people waiting during peak travel times. You may need to wait for the next train. I want to manage expectations and ensure you give yourself plenty of time. However, on our visit, we waited 5-15 minutes, at most, at any stop before boarding.
My best trip would be to take the trolley first thing in the morning. Likewise, you can always buy a two-day ticket !
List Of The Best Things To See In St. Augustine, FL
So, let’s get started and look at some of the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL!
There are a lot of things to do in St. Augustine . St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the contiguous US. Many attractions tell the story of the original Spanish people who founded the city in 1565.
This list includes some of the most popular things to see in St. Augustine. I’ve focused on locations that are noteworthy as historical landmarks rather than on purely tourist-oriented attractions. If you are using the Old Town Trolley, be sure to research ahead of time to plan where you will get on and off the trolley. Batching your sightseeing by trolley stop will make things easier and quicker and prevent back-tracking later.
#1 Castillo de San Marcos National Monument
The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental US. This massive fort looks out over the city’s bay. It is fascinating to explore and provides a fun way to engage with the area’s history.
Tickets are required to enter the fort. The interior is filled with intriguing nooks and crannies where you can learn more about a soldier’s life in the fort. The rooftop has many types of cannons and a fantastic view of the harbor.
We recommend setting aside 2-3 hours to visit Castillo de San Marcos, and in my opinion, this tops the list of the best things to see in St. Augustine, FL.
#2 St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum
The St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum is a historic lighthouse built in 1874. Climb the 219 steps to reach the observation deck, which offers an amazing view of the surrounding area. The museum also has a children’s play area and a puppet theatre.
The new Maritime Center offers many hands-on and interactive displays regarding maritime culture, navigation, and transportation. Children must be at least 44 inches tall to climb the stairs, and tickets are required.
#3 Lightner Museum
The Lightner Museum was once known as the Hotel Alcazar, a palatial hotel commissioned by Standard Oil executive Henry Flagler. Flagler was instrumental in the development of Florida in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Flagler Florida East Coast Railway allowed for the development of the Florida Keys, and his grand vision brought prominent visitors from all over the US to experience Florida. At the Lightner Museum, you can tour the iconic building and see the museum’s collection of art and historical pieces. The museum offers an immersive experience of art, architecture, history, and design. Tickets are required.
If this Florida railroad history interests you, you may want to pick up one of my favorite books titled Sunshine Paradise: The History of Florida Tourism
#4 Flagler College
Flagler College is a private liberal arts college in St. Augustine. The school itself was founded in 1968.
Flagler College’s centerpiece building is the Ponce de Leon Hotel, which was built in 1888 by Henry Flagler. The hotel is a gorgeous example of Spanish Renaissance Revival architecture and was one of the first buildings in the world wired for electricity. Flager’s friend, Thomas Edison, provided the power with his new DC generator.
Henry Flagler established an art colony at the hotel and built an artist’s studio building to the rear of the hotel. The Ponce de Leon Hotel is home to the most extensive collection of Luis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows. Visitors are frequently in awe of the incredible dining room!
Paid historic tours of the campus and buildings are available.
#5 Gonzolaz-Alvarez House (The Oldest House)
The Gonzolaz-Alvarez House is the oldest surviving Spanish colonial house in St. Augustine. Construction began around 1723, and the house was in its final form by 1790. Evidence of St. Augustine’s diverse history of occupation by Spanish, British, and American forces can be seen at the house.
The Oldest House Museum Complex offers guided tours, a museum, a colonial kitchen, an ornamental garden, and a museum store. Tickets are required. Guided tours are available every half hour. The St. Augustine Surf Culture and History Museum is located in the same complex, and admission is included with the Oldest House Museum admission.
#6 Fountain of Youth Archeological Park
The Fountain of Youth Archeological Park is a fun museum and park for the whole family. It plays off the famous legend of the “Fountain of Youth” – a spring of waters that would grant drinkers immortality.
When Ponce de Leon arrived in 1513, he found a local native tribe called the Timucua. He and his men traded with the Indians before relationships became hostile. The Fountain of Youth Archeological Park showcases the fascinating lives and culture of the Timucua people. You can see the Timucua Indian exhibit, a great interactive learning experience, a planetarium with a show about maritime navigation, and explore the park.
The park is 15 acres with venerable oak trees, an observation platform over marshes, native peacocks, and other birds. Tickets are required.
#7 St. George Street
St. George Street is the bustling main street that runs through the center of old St. Augustine. In the early days, it was the city’s main street, and today, it is the center of tourist attractions, shops, restaurants, and bars.
This area includes a vibrant, busy, pedestrian-only street lined with attractions of every kind. It’s fun to walk down the street and see all the cute shops, galleries, and restaurants. I recommend coming here for lunch or dinner, as there are many great places to eat.
The City Gate, Oldest House, and Cathedral Basilica are located along St. George Street. Be sure to satisfy your sweet tooth at Whetstone Chocolates, a local confectionary in business since 1967!
#8 Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the oldest Catholic church in the city, and the Parish of St. Augustine is the oldest Catholic parish in the country. The first Catholic mass in the continental United States took place here.
The Cathedral’s Spanish Mission architectural style is beautiful, and the interior is adorned with exquisite murals, stained glass windows, sculptures, and artifacts. The Cathedral is open to the public, and guided tours are available.
#9 National Shrine Of Our Lady Of La Leche at Mission Nombre De Dios
The Shrine Of Our Lady Of La Leche was built in 1609 in honor of Our Lady of La Leche – a Marian apparition popular with early settlers. It’s considered the oldest shrine in the US. The complex consists of The Chapel of Our Lady of La Leche, the Great Cross (a really tall cross), the Rustic Alter, and a beautiful Rosary garden.
President John F. Kennedy once called it the “Most sacred acre in America.” Admission to the National Shrine Of Our Lady Of La Leche at Mission Nombre De Dios is free, and self-guided tours are available.
#10 Gates of St. Augustine
The Gates of St. Augustine are located at the very north end of St. George Street. It’s a historic landmark built by St. Augustine residents in 1808 and used as a gate to defend the city. The gate is made of coquina, a locally abundant limestone sedimentary rock comprised almost entirely of sand-sized fossil debris.
The gates are an excellent place to take pictures and memorialize your visit to St. Augustine ! They also signify the start of St. George Street and entry into the historic district.
