We sent you a letter or email because we need more information from you to continue processing your passport. Go to our  Respond to a Letter or Email page  for more information.

4. What counts as the “proof of international travel” required to apply at a passport agency?

If you are flying internationally, you must provide a flight receipt or an itinerary. If you are traveling by land or sea to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, or the Caribbean, you can provide a hotel reservation, cruise tickets, or international car insurance.

5. I have a life or death emergency in a foreign country and need a passport. What should I do?

Go to our Life-or-Death Emergency page to see if you are eligible for an appointment at one of our passport agencies and centers.

6. My passport has already been issued and mailed to me, but I have not received it. What do I do?

If you have waited over two weeks since the date we updated your application status to "Passport Mailed" and you have not received your passport, contact the  National Passport Information Center . Customer service representatives will help you complete a special form (known as the  DS-86 form ) which is a signed statement that you didn't receive your U.S. passport.

You have 90 days from the date your passport was issued to complete the DS-86 form. After 90 days, you must reapply and pay all fees.

7. How will you send my passport and supporting documents?

After we print your passport, we will send it to you and return your supporting documents. How we send your passport and supporting documents depends if you applied for a book and/or a card and if you paid for 1-2 day delivery service of your completed passport book.

I applied for a passport book only : You may receive your newly-issued passport and your citizenship documents in two separate mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after receiving your passport before you receive a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We can send your passport book via a 1-2 day delivery service.

I applied for a passport card only : You may receive your newly-issued passport card and your citizenship documents in two separate mailings. You may wait 8 weeks after receiving your passport before you receive a second mailing with your citizenship documents. We only send the passport card via First Class Mail. We do not send cards via 1-2 day delivery services.

I applied for both a passport book and passport card : You may receive three separate mailings; one with your citizenship documents, one with your newly-issued passport book, and one with your newly-issued passport card. You may wait 8 weeks after receiving your passport book before you receive a second and third mailing with your passport card and citizenship documents.

I have been waiting more than 8 weeks and have not received my supporting documents. What should I do?

It may take 8 weeks after you receive your new passport for your supporting documents (e.g. birth certificate or previous passport) to arrive.  If you have been waiting more than 8 weeks , contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to report that you have not received your documents.

8. I'm renewing my passport. Do I get the old one back? Will I get a new passport number?

Yes, in most cases when you renew by mail, we will return the old passport to you. The old passport may not arrive for up to 8 weeks after you receive your new passport.

If you are renewing online, do not mail your old passport to us.

We recommend keeping your old passports in a safe place.

If your old passport is linked to a valid visa, you can still use the valid visa. You must travel with both your new and old passport in this case.

When you receive your new passport, the number on the document will be different from the number on your previous passport.

9. My address has changed. Do I need to update my passport?

Contact the  National Passport Information Center . You do not need to contact us if your address changed after you received your passport.

10. My passport has been damaged. Can I continue to use this passport?

If your passport has been significantly damaged , especially the book cover or the page displaying your personal data and photo, you will need to apply for a new passport.  Damage that might require you to replace your passport includes water damage, a significant tear, unofficial markings on the data page, missing visa pages (torn out), a hole punch, or other injuries.

Normal "wear and tear"  of a U.S. passport is expected and does not count as "damage."  Normal wear includes the bend of a passport after being carried in your back pocket or fanning of the visa pages after extensive opening and closing.

If you need to replace your damaged passport, you will need to submit the following in person (See  Where to Apply ):

  • The damaged passport;
  • A signed statement explaining the damaged or mutilated condition of your passport book and/or card;
  • Form DS-11 ; and
  • All documents required by Form DS-11, including citizenship documentation (i.e., birth certificate).

Processing times vary depending on the time of year. See  Application Processing Times  for more information.

13. How much does a U.S. passport cost?

The  Issue Date  of your passport can be found on the data page of your passport book or on the front of your passport card.

Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six months beyond the dates of your trip . Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met.

Check our  Country Information  to learn about entry and exit requirements for the country or countries in which you are traveling.

To learn about returning to the United States after your travel, visit the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's website .

You should have a U.S. passport if:

  • You have family living or traveling abroad,
  • You are thinking about a vacation abroad, or
  • You have a job that could require international travel.

19. How many blank visa pages do I need to travel?

20. I live in Canada. Are there special procedures for applying for and renewing my U.S. passport?

Yes. If you live in Canada, you may be eligible to renew your U.S. passport by mail. You cannot renew by mail from any other foreign country in the world. Follow the instructions on Form DS-82 and our Renew by Mail page. Send your application and supporting documents via Canada Post to one of two addresses (either for routine or expedited service) listed on Form DS-82. You must pay by check or money order in U.S. currency drawn from a U.S. bank.

You should renew in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate in Canada if you have urgent travel within the next 4 weeks. You must also apply at the embassy or consulate if you're applying for the first time or you're applying for your child's (under age 16) passport. If you are changing your name within one year of the date your passport was issued, you will need to complete  Form DS-5504: Name Change, Data Correction, and Limited Passport Book Replacement .

If you are changing your name more than a year after your passport was issued, you must submit  Form DS-82: Renewal Application .

For more information, see  How to Change or Correct a Passport .

22. Why is there an execution fee for the passport and passport card?

The  execution fee  applies to first-time applicants, children, and those replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged passport who must appear in person before an agent authorized by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of State to give oaths to verify passport applications. In order to offer U.S. citizens convenient locations to apply for a passport, the Department of State authorizes Passport Acceptance Agents to accept passport applications on its behalf. The execution fee is to reimburse the acceptance facility for the cost of the service provided to the customer and to serve as an incentive for participation in the Passport Application Acceptance Program.

When applying for both the passport book and card on the same application, you pay only one execution fee. The execution fee does not apply to adult passport book or card renewals when submitting Form DS-82.

23. How do I order applications in bulk?

Bulk quantities of passport forms are now available from the U.S. Government Publishing Office.

29. Can I use a passport to fly domestically?

31. What is an electronic passport?

Since 2007, we have issued only electronic passports. An electronic passport has a small integrated circuit (or “chip”) embedded in the back cover.

The chip securely stores:

  • The same information visually displayed on the photo page of the passport,
  • A biometric identifier in the form of a digital image of the passport photograph, which facilitates the use of facial recognition technology at ports-of-entry,
  • The unique chip identification number, and
  • A digital signature to protect the stored data from alteration.

If the chip fails, the passport remains a valid travel document until its expiration date. You will continue to be processed by the port-of-entry officer as if you had a passport without a chip.

32. What is the difference between the Next Generation Passport and the ePassport?

The most visible changes to the Next Generation Passport book are the polycarbonate, multi-layered plastic, data page, and the passport number, which now includes both letters and numbers.

33. I received an email or text message from the U.S. Department of State that I did not ask for. How can I tell if this is legitimate?

In 2024, we are sending emails and SMS text messages to some customers. The emails and text messages will include links that take you directly to our website. Use the information below to confirm the email or text message is from us.

The emails may include a reminder to renew your passport from [email protected], or a request to participate in an optional survey from [email protected] after you have applied for a passport.

If you get an email from [email protected], the subject line of the email will be "Act Now - Renew Your U.S. Passport!" or "Act Now - Renew Your Child's Passport!"

If you get an email from [email protected], the subject line of the email will be "Your Recent Passport Application - We want to hear from you."

Text messages

We are sending SMS text messages to a limited number of customers who have passports expiring in the next year, and customers who are in the process of applying for a passport. The message will appear in your phone's SMS text app from 1-888-904-6435 and will begin with "Passport Services - U.S. Department of State."

34. My new passport book has a QR code sticker on the back. What is it for?

We are placing Quick Response (QR) code stickers on the back of passport books to give you easy access to important passport and travel information. You may remove the sticker, though we recommend keeping it on so you have quick and easy access to our website. If you scan the code using the camera on your mobile device, it will link you to our website. If you do not wish to scan the code, you can also access the After I Get My Passport webpage . The QR code is identical on all passport books, does not contain any personally identifiable information, nor does it change the way border officials, airlines, and others review your document. We are not currently placing QR code stickers on passport cards.

If the mailing address you provided on your child's application has changed and you're waiting for his or her U.S. passport book, passport card, or return of citizenship evidence documents, please contact the  National Passport Information Center . If you submit an application for a U.S. passport and do not provide a Social Security number, you will encounter a delay with the processing and/or denial of your passport application. Contact the  Social Security Administration  for information about obtaining a new or replacement Social Security number and card.

5. What if I have an emergency and need to travel but cannot locate my Social Security number?

If you are outside the United States, we may be able to issue you a limited passport for direct return to the United States only. If you are in the United States, we cannot issue you a passport unless you provide your Social Security number.

1. What is the passport card?

The passport card is the wallet-size travel document that can only be used to re-enter the United States at land border-crossings and sea ports-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. 2. Why can’t I use the passport card to fly to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, or Bermuda?

The passport card was designed for the specific needs of northern and southern U.S. border communities with residents that cross the border frequently by land. The passport book is the only document approved for international travel by air.

3. How can I learn more about what travel documents are required by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative?

4. How do I apply for a passport card?

Six Months Passport Validity Rule

Six Months Passport Rule

What is the six-month passport validity rule? When traveling overseas, most people know that a valid United States passport is required to enter an international destination. But, what is unknown to the traveler is that some countries would need to have enough six-month validity on their passport to travel to the country known as the six-month validity passport rule for visitors .  Therefore, if your passport expires within the next six months or, in some cases, three months, some countries will refuse to give you entry into the country.

Hence, this rule is in place so that if the unexpected visitor needs to stay for up to six months, his/her passport would be valid to leave the country.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

What is the Six Month Passport Validity Rule?

The 6 Month Validity Rule is imposed by foreign countries and not by the United States of America. It means that your passport should be valid for more than six months before you can enter a foreign country that imposes the six-month rule. This rule is imposed by some of the countries we have listed below. This rule is prevalent in the Asian continent, such as China and Hong Kong.

Which Countries Require Six Months on Passport?

When visiting another country, remember that the six-month rule is enforced by countries outside the US, not by the US. Hence, it’s important to know the rules when entering or leaving to avoid any issues.

Countries That Require a 3-Month Passport Rule?

Which countries need you to have a passport that is valid for three months or more? As a traveler, it’s important to know the requirements for international travel. One important factor to consider is the validity of your passport. While most countries require a passport to be valid for at least six months, there are some that have a 3 months passport rule.

Other Countries with Passport Validity Requirements

U.s. citizens entering u.s. with a passport expiring in 6 months.

The six-month validity requirement does NOT apply to an American citizen using a U.S. passport to enter the United States or Canada. He/she may do so up until the date of expiration of the passport.

Even though many countries implemented the six-month validity rule, other restrictions are enforced to enter these countries. Some require a passport to have one clean page per stamp or at least one available sheet. Also, a visa is a requirement to enter some countries. Be aware of this significant document because without it, when it is required, you will not be allowed to board your flight or enter the country you plan to visit.

Having a passport with plenty of validity before travel is best and wise. Also, it is necessary to know some laws of the country you plan to visit to avoid any mishaps or know what to do when you are there.

What is the 6-month passport rule.

travel with passport expiring in 6 months

If your passport is set to expire in six months or less, you may not be able to fly to or from the countries of your choice. That’s why it’s important to check your passport’s expiration date, especially if you plan to travel soon.

In this article, we’ll review:

  • Why your passport needs to be valid for six months
  • What countries have a 6-month passport validity rule
  • What countries have a 3-month passport validity rule

Countries with other types of passport validity requirements

  • If you can be denied entry abroad if your passport is almost expired

Why does my passport need to be valid for six months if I won’t be abroad that long?

The reason behind having a passport valid for six months prior to expiration is mainly because of precaution. If there’s an emergency or a sudden reason you have to stay abroad longer than expected, you’ll want to have a valid passport that can allow you to travel to/from the countries you need to visit.

What countries have 6-month passport validity rule?

According to U.S. Department of State , countries requiring six months of validity include:

  • Saudi Arabia
  • The United Arab Emirates

What countries have a 3-month passport validity rule?

According to U.S. Department of State, European countries within the Schengen zone generally have a 3-month validity requirement. The Schengen zone includes 26 countries that allow people to travel without needing a passport. These include:

  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • Switzerland

Additionally, the following countries also have the 3-month expiration rule:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina

According to U.S. Department of State, Hong Kong and Macau have a 1-month validity requirement.

Additionally, the following countries have a three-month validity requirement where your passport cannot be expired within three months of the date you leave the country:

  • North Macedonia

Can I be denied entry abroad if my passport is almost expired?

Yes. You'll want to check with specific countries about their rules, as in some cases you may be able to enter/leave a country within the 3-month expiration period. However, if your passport is close to expiring (anywhere from 3–6 months) you may be denied entry abroad. If you find yourself in this predicament, you may be able to contact your local embassy about expediting a passport renewal and/or receive an emergency , limited-validity passport.

If you’re looking to travel abroad soon, it’s essential to review your passport to see if it will expire soon. Because it can take time to renew a passport, you’ll want to renew it sooner rather than later so that you have a valid passport in time of your travel.

This rule is implemented by many countries as a precautionary measure to ensure that travelers have a valid passport throughout their entire stay. It is important to note that this rule may vary from country to country, so it is vital for travelers to research and understand the specific requirements of their destination. Failure to comply with the passport 6-month rule can result in denied entry or even deportation. To avoid any complications or disruptions to travel plans, it is recommended to renew your passport well in advance if it is approaching the six-month expiration mark. Planning ahead and being aware of the passport 6-month rule will ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.

Why Should My Passport Be Valid for Six Months If I Will Stay Abroad for Less

Renewing your passport at least six months before it expires, even if your stay abroad will be shorter, is essential to ensure smooth travel and avoid any potential complications. Many countries have implemented the six-month passport validity rule, which requires travelers to have a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay. This rule is in place to ensure that travelers do not overstay their visa or face any unexpected delays or difficulties during their trip.

To understand the importance of renewing your passport in a timely manner, let’s take a look at the potential complications that can arise if your passport expires within six months of your travel date.

What Countries Have a Six-Month Passport Validity Rule

What Countries Have a Six-Month Passport Validity Rule

Several countries enforce a six-month passport validity rule to ensure smooth travel and avoid potential complications. This rule requires that travelers’ passports be valid for at least six months beyond their planned departure date from the country they are visiting. The reason behind this rule is to ensure that travelers have a valid passport throughout their entire stay and to avoid any issues that may arise, such as unexpected delays in travel or emergency situations that may require extended stays. It is important for travelers to be aware of this rule before planning their trips to avoid any last-minute passport renewals or cancellations. Some of the countries that enforce this rule include China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and many others. It is advisable for travelers to check the passport validity requirements of their destination country before making any travel arrangements to ensure a hassle-free journey.

Countries With a Three-Month Passport Validity Requirement

Passport holders must adhere to the three-month validity requirement when visiting certain countries to avoid any potential travel disruptions. This requirement means that your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the country you are visiting. Failing to meet this requirement could result in being denied entry or facing difficulties during your trip. Here are three important things to keep in mind regarding the three-month validity requirement:

  • Check entry requirements: Before you travel, make sure to check the entry requirements of the country you plan to visit. Some countries have strict enforcement of the three-month validity rule, while others may have different requirements.
  • Renew your passport in advance: If your passport is nearing its expiration date, it is advisable to renew it before traveling. This will ensure that you meet the three-month validity requirement and avoid any last-minute complications.
  • Plan your travel accordingly: It is crucial to plan your travel dates considering the three-month validity requirement. Make sure your passport will remain valid for the required period beyond your departure date to prevent any travel disruptions.

Countries With Other Passport Validity Requirements

The article discusses the varying passport validity requirements of different countries, shedding light on the importance of staying informed before traveling internationally. While some countries have a three-month passport validity requirement , others have different rules in place. It is essential for travelers to be aware of these requirements to avoid any last-minute travel complications. For instance, some countries require a passport to be valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date, while others have a one-month validity requirement. It is crucial to check the specific requirements of the destination country well in advance, as failing to meet these requirements may result in denied entry or even deportation. Staying informed about passport validity requirements is a crucial step to ensure a smooth and hassle-free international travel experience.

Are There Any Exceptions to the Passport Six-Month Rule

Interestingly, despite the widespread implementation of the six-month passport validity rule, certain countries have made exceptions for specific circumstances, such as emergency situations or when the traveler possesses a valid visa. These exceptions provide some flexibility for travelers who may find themselves in urgent situations or who have obtained the necessary documentation to enter a country. It is important for travelers to be aware of these exceptions and to check the specific requirements of their destination country before embarking on their journey. Here are three important things to know about exceptions to the passport six-month rule:

  • Emergency situations: In the event of an emergency, some countries may allow travelers to enter with a passport that has less than six months of validity remaining. This can include situations such as family emergencies or unexpected medical issues.
  • Valid visa: If a traveler possesses a valid visa for the destination country, they may be exempt from the six-month passport validity rule. The visa serves as proof of the traveler’s intention to leave the country before their passport expires.
  • Consular assistance: In certain circumstances, travelers who find themselves in a difficult situation abroad may seek assistance from their country’s consulate or embassy. These diplomatic missions can provide guidance and support, including advice on passport validity requirements and potential exceptions.

Overall, while the six-month passport validity rule is widely implemented, it is important to note that exceptions exist for specific situations. Travelers should always check the requirements of their destination country and seek appropriate documentation or assistance if needed.

Can I Travel If My Passport Expires in Less Than Six Months

Can I Travel If My Passport Expires in Less Than Six Months

In light of the current discussion topic regarding passport expiration, it is pertinent to determine whether it is possible to travel if one’s passport expires in less than six months. Many countries have a requirement that a passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry. This is to ensure that travelers have enough time remaining on their passport to cover their entire stay. However, it is important to note that not all countries have this requirement. Some countries may allow entry even if the passport is set to expire in less than six months. To avoid any travel disruptions, it is recommended to check the entry requirements of the destination country well in advance and renew the passport if necessary.

Could I Be Denied Entry Abroad If My Passport Expires Soon

It is crucial to understand the potential consequences of an expiring passport and whether one could be denied entry abroad if their passport expires soon. Here are three key points to consider:

  • Many countries have specific entry requirements that include a minimum passport validity period. This means that if your passport is set to expire within a certain timeframe, such as six months, you may be denied entry.
  • Airlines also have their own regulations regarding passport expiration dates. They may refuse to let you board a flight if your passport is close to expiring, even if the destination country allows entry.
  • It is always advisable to renew your passport well in advance of its expiration date to avoid any potential travel disruptions. Check the passport validity requirements of your destination country and plan accordingly to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.

What If My Passport Expires Abroad

Renewing your passport before it expires abroad is crucial, as it ensures a smooth travel experience and prevents any potential complications. Traveling with an expired passport can lead to denied entry, delays, and even being stranded in a foreign country. Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. This is to ensure that you have a valid travel document for the duration of your stay. If your passport expires while you are abroad, you may not be allowed to enter your destination country or even transit through other countries. It is important to check the passport validity requirements of your destination country well in advance and renew your passport if necessary. By staying proactive and renewing your passport on time, you can avoid any travel disruptions and enjoy a hassle-free journey.

Bottom Line

To summarize, the bottom line is that renewing your passport before it expires is essential for seamless travel and to avoid any potential complications. Here are three reasons why renewing your passport on time is crucial:

  • Avoid travel disruptions: Many countries require visitors to have a passport with at least six months of validity remaining. If your passport is about to expire within that timeframe, you may be denied entry or face delays and additional scrutiny at immigration checkpoints. Renewing your passport ahead of time ensures smooth travel without any unexpected obstacles.
  • Emergency situations: Having a valid passport is crucial in case of emergencies, such as unexpected travel or family emergencies abroad. Renewing your passport before it expires ensures that you are always prepared for any unforeseen circumstances that may require immediate international travel.
  • Peace of mind: Renewing your passport on time gives you peace of mind, knowing that you have all the necessary documentation for hassle-free travel. It allows you to focus on your journey and enjoy the experience without worrying about passport expiration or potential complications.

Passport expiring soon? Visit these countries within your 3-month renewal deadline

Melissa Klurman

Have you looked at your passport's expiration date recently? If you think you're in the clear for summer travel with six months or less remaining until your renewal date, think again.

Actually, if you have less than eight months of validity remaining on your passport, for many countries around the world , you may already be too late for summer travel. The issue stems from the six-month validity rule that you'll encounter in most European countries in the Schengen Area – including summer favorites France, Italy and Spain – that requires your passport to be valid for a minimum of six months after entry. The six-month validity rule also applies to large portions of Africa, Asia and South America. In addition, many other countries enforce three-month validity requirements for passports. This further limits your options for travel if your expiration date is quickly approaching.

Couple that with wait times for passport renewals currently ranging anywhere from five weeks (expedited) to 11 weeks, and you may find yourself crossing many countries off your travel list if you want to get away soon.

Don't despair, though. You can still travel internationally with just a month or two left on your passport before the expiration date. This is a fact I learned firsthand. I recently had to research alternatives for my family when our spring break trip to Kenya (with a six-month passport validity requirement, plus a visa) was off the table when I discovered my son's five-year passport would expire a month after our planned trip.

Where to head instead? Here are all the options where passports need only be valid at the time of entry or for the duration of your stay. Note, though, that you will need a blank passport page for an entry stamp, unless otherwise noted below.

The Bahamas and Bermuda

If you're looking for Caribbean surf and sun, these two countries will welcome you as long as your passport is valid at the time of entry. Extra bonus: Both Bermuda and the Bahamas are included in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's 16 international Preclearance locations . The Bahamas also offers TSA PreCheck in Nassau , making your return to the U.S. almost as easy as a domestic trip.

Oh, Canada , thank you for being a friend. The entire country -- including summer favorites such as Victoria and Vancouver in the west and Francophile Montreal and Quebec, plus Toronto, in the east -- only requires a passport that's valid at your date of entry. Like Bermuda and the Bahamas, Canada also offers the U.S. CBP's Preclearance program at locations in Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Victoria and Winnipeg.

United Kingdom

England turned out to be my family's spring break savior. London provided an easy getaway from the East Coast, as well as nonstop airfare available to book within a short time frame. If you choose this option, you can visit Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with the same passport, too, just as long as it's valid for the duration of your stay. (Note, though, that you can't visit other European countries with three- or six-month passport validity requirements in the same trip.)

The Emerald Isle is another easy-to-reach country from the U.S. (and another spot my family has visited for a surprisingly sunny spring break in the past). Ireland only requires that your passport be valid for the duration of your stay. Extra bonus: Customs Preclearance is available at airports in both Dublin and Shannon before you return home.

Another easy destination to reach from much of the U.S., Mexico also doesn't require passports to be valid past the duration of your stay.

Long-haul travel is an option with a passport that has a short validity if you head directly to these islands off the eastern coast of Southern Africa. You'll just need a passport valid for the duration of your stay (and plenty of sunscreen).

It's worth noting that there are several U.S. territories and commonwealth destinations where you won't need a passport at all to visit, including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

International travel is generally fun, and Mexico may be one of the best destinations for travelers from the United States. This is due to its stunning beaches, favorable exchange rate and, of course, its easy access from the U.S.

But the passport expiration rules in Mexico might keep you from having fun south of the border.

Let’s take a look at Mexico’s six-month passport rule this year, as well as ways to travel to Mexico without a passport and tips for getting your passport renewed.

Passport expiration rules for Mexico

Mexico’s passport validity rules are fairly lenient, especially when compared to other countries.

Unlike in Europe, where U.S. travelers must have at least six months of validity remaining on their passport when they visit, there has been no Mexico six-month passport rule in recent years.

Air travelers

According to the U.S. Department of State’s website, travelers entering by air need only have a passport that is currently valid.

There is no Mexico passport rule of six months. However, those arriving in the country do need to have at least one blank passport page in their book for stamps.

Overland travelers

If you’re entering by land, you'll need a valid passport. If you plan to travel beyond the immediate border area (approximately 12 miles), you will need to stop at the National Migration Institute office to obtain an entry permit.

Note that there are some exceptions to this entry permit rule, such as travel into Baja California , so be sure to confirm what’s required of you before you depart.

The process differs for those entering by water, especially if they're on a cruise or a private boat.

Although all travelers entering Mexico by water need to have a valid passport, there are some exceptions for closed-loop cruises that depart and return to the same U.S. port. In these cases, U.S. citizens need only bring their birth certificates and a valid government-issued ID to board their cruise.

Those on private boats are able to use a passport card rather than a passport book if they’re entering territorial waters but do not go ashore. Otherwise, they’ll need to meet all of Mexico’s standard entry requirements.

Can I travel to Mexico with an expired passport?

Even though there aren’t any passport requirements of six months validity for Mexico, that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to travel passport-free. This is especially important to note if you have an expired passport.

Although it may be possible to enter Mexico by a land crossing without needing to present documentation, it’s still something that you need to have with you on your person.

Renewing your passport

Don’t meet Mexico’s passport expiration rules? You’ll need to renew your passport if you want to enter the country.

If your passport is not damaged and was issued less than 15 years ago, among other criteria, you’ll be able to renew your passport by mail using the DS-82 form.

Here are all the requirements for renewing by mail:

You must submit your passport with your application.

The passport was issued when you were age 16 or older.

The passport was issued within the last 15 years.

The passport was never reported as lost or stolen.

The passport is not damaged other than normal wear and tear.

The passport has your current name or you’re able to provide legal documentation of your name change.

If your passport doesn’t meet all of these requirements, you’ll have to complete an application for a new passport instead. This is done in person through the DS-11 form.

Traveling to Mexico without a passport

It’s possible to travel to Mexico without a passport, though the circumstances in which you can do so are limited.

First, there are those closed-loop cruises that we talked about. For example: You board your cruise from a U.S. port, such as San Diego, cruise south down to Mexico and debark in Cabo San Lucas . There is no passport control at the cruise terminal; you’re simply able to get off the ship. At departure, you’ll board, sail north and return to San Diego.

When debarking in San Diego you’ll go through U.S. immigration. If you don’t have a passport, you can instead present your birth certificate and ID.

Second, it’s possible to enter Mexico by land using a passport card.

These allow citizens to reenter the U.S. from Mexico, Bermuda, Canada and Caribbean countries by land or sea. They cost less than a passport book, but they're not valid for other international travel or any travel by air.

Passport expiration rules for Mexico, recapped

If you're interested in traveling to Mexico in the near future, you'll want to be certain that you meet the eligibility requirements.

Although Mexico is more lenient than some other countries, you'll still need to have an unexpired passport or passport card, depending on your method of entry.

Otherwise, some limited travel options exist for those without a passport — though you'll always want to research entry requirements before traveling internationally.

International Travel Recommendations

Office of the Spokesperson

April 26, 2022

U.S. citizens considering international travel should plan ahead and be informed about travel requirements before making decisions or firm travel plans.  We urge U.S. citizens considering international travel to check their passport expiration date early and if renewal is needed, to submit applications as far ahead of their travel dates as possible.  Travelers should check the  Passports  section of  travel.state.gov  for the latest information about applying for a passport, including application procedures, processing times, and fees.  Travelers should also research potential international travel destinations on the  International Travel  section of  travel.state.gov  and review the current  Travel Advisory  and  Country Information Page  for each country.  Keep in mind that many countries require six months’ passport validity for entry.

The U.S. Department of State is committed to meeting the needs of U.S. travelers.  The current processing time for routine passport service is 8-11 weeks and for expedited service is 5-7 weeks.  These processing times do not factor in mailing times to and from our offices. They begin the day we receive an application at a passport agency (not the day a customer applies for a passport at an acceptance facility or drops an application off in the mail), and they end the day we issue the passport.

Adults with valid passports expiring within one year should  renew by mail.   Applicants with urgent travel within five days can make an appointment at one of  our 26 regional passport agencies.   Applicants with life and death emergencies can make an appointment within three days of travel.  All such applicants must call 877-487-2778 to make an appointment and will be required to provide proof of travel and proof of the life-or-death emergency at the time they apply.

Applicants may schedule an appointment to apply for a passport if they are traveling within two weeks or need a foreign visa within four weeks; however, the appointment cannot occur more than five business days before the date of travel, or ten business days if a visa is required.

We continue to advise travelers to consider COVID-19 conditions and restrictions at their destinations, in addition to other safety and security factors, when considering international travel.  Our embassies and consulates around the world will continue to provide the latest country-specific COVID-19-related information on their websites.

Travelling in general

There isn’t a specific answer to this question. This is because each country has its own entry requirements.

Always check the entry and exit requirements for all countries you’re going to visit before making your plans. Then check your passport to see when it expires. This will tell you whether you need to renew your passport yet.

All countries have their own entry requirements. Read the  travel advisories  to view the entry and exit requirements of each country.

Since these requirements can change, you may also check with the  Government of Canada office  of the country you visit.

You shouldn’t travel with a passport that will expire during your trip or shortly after your planned return. To avoid problems while travelling, you should get a new passport before leaving if your passport could expire around or during your travels.

Some countries won’t allow you to enter if your passport expires shortly after your planned return date. To find out more about entry and exit requirements, consult the:

  • travel advisories
  • Government of Canada office  of the country you will be visiting

You should make all travel arrangements in the name on your passport.

If the names don't match, you may have problems at border crossings or when boarding flights.

Check with the authorities in the destination country to find out if you need any other documents.

Travelling with children

We strongly recommend that your child carry a consent letter if they’re travelling abroad:

  • friends or relatives
  • only one parent/guardian

For the purposes of the consent letter, a Canadian child is defined as anyone who is under the age of majority (18 or 19, depending on the province or territory of residence).

Learn more about children travelling abroad and get a  sample consent letter at Travel.gc.ca .

5 things I learned when renewing my passport for the first time

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Passports are your key to the world, allowing you to cross borders, explore new places and experience different cultures. They are also a pain in the you-know-what to renew.

I recently renewed my passport for the first time, and it was quite a tumultuous experience. When I applied in late January, the online renewal portal through MyTravelGov was open, so I decided to take my chances and renew my passport that way.

I figured that after the first rounds of online renewals last year, the kinks would have been ironed out. Boy, was I wrong. I ended up getting my passport a mere 10 days before international travel.

I will caveat my experience with this: I had a very tight window to renew. My passport wouldn’t technically expire until January 2024, but I planned an international trip with family in August 2023. So, I needed to have more than six months until my passport expired. I could’ve renewed over the summer, but I was worried about a rumored government shutdown in June or shortly after.

I had a trip planned April 2, so I had to renew sometime before that. However, I couldn’t renew before Jan. 23 because you can’t renew more than a year before a passport expires. That left me with just about nine weeks to get my passport renewed before my trip at the beginning of April.

These are the five things I learned when I renewed my passport for the first time and some tips to make your experience easier than mine.

Allow for lots of breathing room

Going into this experience, I definitely underestimated how long it would take to get my passport renewed. When I submitted it on Jan. 29 I got an email that it was received on the same day. So, I naively figured it would take the expected three-to-five-week period for my passport to arrive. But as days turned into weeks and weeks and weeks, I became less confident.

A coworker submitted his on Jan. 25, so I figured we were in the same cycle. However, I became worried when he mentioned that his application status switched to “in process” just four hours after he submitted his application. We even went so far as to compare the numbers of our applications. Mine hovered at “received” almost the entire time until it suddenly switched to “in process” on March 21.

I recommend giving yourself at least 12 weeks before international travel, if not 15. At the time of writing this, the U.S. Department of State is quoting 10 to 13 weeks for routine renewal and seven to nine for expedited renewal. The State Department also recommends renewing passports “well ahead of any planned international travel, even if it still has a few months validity left on it,” according to its website. Remember that some destinations require you to have a valid passport for at least six months after your travel dates.

Note: There are also passport agencies and centers that can process the application almost immediately, but it’s extremely difficult to get an appointment. I tried calling numerous times to schedule one, and sometimes the phones weren’t even connected. Also, you must have imminent travel within two weeks to even get a shot at an appointment.

When in doubt, expedite. Always.

My saving grace in this whole mess was that I expedited from the get-go, and I paid for two-day shipping. I didn’t mention earlier that I was scheduled to move out of my New York City apartment on March 27 and was then traveling for work right after. The pressure was on.

If you’re unsure about whether the routine processing will get your passport to you in time for your vacation, I highly recommend expediting it. It will cost an extra $60, but in my opinion, it’s worth it. If you’re even more concerned about your timing, I also suggest tacking on the two-day shipping. This will cost you roughly another $20, but again, I was pressed for time. On top of the base fare for renewal ($130), I paid an additional $80, which brought my total to $210 for my renewal.

While I know this isn’t an option for every traveler, it isn’t something I would have done if my window for renewal this year wasn’t so tight. If I didn’t have pending travel and a tricky expiration timeframe, I wouldn’t have paid the extra $80.

Reach out to your local representative

As my application sat in the purgatory that is the “received” status, I decided to reach out to my elected official. I thought the least they could do was contact the State Department for me since, ultimately, that’s part of the job. Congressman Jerry Nadler was one of my elected officials, so I went to his website and filled out a casework request for my passport.

On March 20, a representative at his office informed me by email that the State Department was “having issues due to the volume of renewal applications they received through the new online portal.”

She explained that previously, the office could reach out to the passport agency location to request immediate processing, regardless of the applicant’s travel date. “However, the online renewals are so backed up that the Dept. of State is currently only accepting congressional inquiries on cases with confirmed travel within 2 weeks,” she wrote.

I confirmed to her that my travel was within two weeks and provided my flight number. She further requested an electronic privacy release form and my flight itinerary, which I sent (although she later responded that my release form never went through). It turned out that my application status changed from “received” to “in process” earlier that morning, but I still provided the information in case it was further delayed. My passport was shipped the following day, on March 22.

Although it seems like my passport changed to “in process” right around the time the caseworker contacted me, I think it was a coincidence. Despite this, I still recommend contacting a local elected official to aid you in your renewal efforts because she was extremely helpful.

Maybe opt for mail-in renewal

As the State Department streamlines the process of online renewals, it might be better to stick to mail renewal. This might even be the only option available to you, as the State Department paused online renewals on March 8. “During our limited release, over 500,000 customers volunteered to submit their applications online and test our system,” the website states. “We look forward to launching the enhanced application in a full, nationwide release later this year.”

Even though the online renewal option will be available later this year, I think it might be wise to stick with mail-in renewal until the department smooths out the process. Also, the website I used to renew online was extremely temperamental, and I was only able to get to my application status every so often. The site often crashed, which was an issue my coworker also had.

Expect delays

Unfortunately, it seems like passport renewals are delayed no matter which route you take. Demand is high, and backlogs are imminent. This delayed service is expected, following confirmation to TPG in March and reflecting the agency’s upcoming busy season with summer travel. Demand for passports has soared, with 30% to 40% more requests than at the same time last year, according to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Plan ahead and make sure you submit you application well before upcoming travel. Don’t plan nonrefundable travel if you are hovering around a passport expiration/delayed passport renewal. Or, buy travel insurance , just in case.

Bottom line

This was a stressful experience, but it helped that I was on top of the process and exhausted many avenues to speed up my renewal. I had a unique timeframe to get my new passport, so I got lucky when it finally arrived before my international travel. Expect it to take a while, especially over the summer, as demand for passports increases. Stay patient and remain calm. Now I return to my motto: Have passport. Will travel.

This disproportionately impacts indigenous peoples and traditional communities, exacerbating existing socio-economic inequalities.

Wine to Water Volunteers will have a unique exposure to the need for water in Columbia, areas along the Amazon river, and see first-hand how we are addressing the crisis. Volunteers will spend several days alongside the country staff, in various water projects, spending time in the community, distributing filters, and helping to educate children about healthy water, sanitation, and hygiene habits through the Water4Schools program.

The Passport 3 Month Rule - Country Requirements & More

metal number 3 sculpture

Are you ready to plan an international trip? Before booking your tickets and traveling abroad, make that the validity of your passport is up-to-date. One crucial part of this process usually overlooked by people is the 3-month rule enforced by certain countries.

Even if your passport has not expired yet, there are places you cannot travel to or through unless you have at least 90 days' worth of validity remaining before the expiration date. These passport requirements are not negotiable.

If you are looking to travel internationally, you need to be prepared with a passport that will allow you to travel to and through all the countries on your itinerary.

Short Summary

  • The 3-month passport validity rule requires passports to be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of arrival, with exceptions and special cases.
  • It is important to research entry requirements, obtain necessary visas in advance, and verify a passport's expiration date before traveling.
  • If your passport does not have enough validity remaining, you will need to apply in person at a regional passport agency. Alternatively, our expert advice is to enlist the help of a registered passport expediting service to get your passport renewed as fast as possible .
  • Emergency situations may require contacting one's home nation embassy or consulate to apply for emergency passport renewal service .

Understanding the 3-Month Passport Validity Rule

3 women sitting at an airport looking at their passports

The 3-month passport validity rule mandates that a passport is valid for up to three months after the anticipated date of arrival. This regulation is in place to prevent illegal residency and guarantee travelers possess legal passports throughout their stay. Simply put, if you don't have the right travel documents, countries will deny you entry across their borders.

It's important for people intending to travel abroad to be informed about their destination country's rules about expiring passports. These differ from one nation to another.

While some countries require just a 3 month validity period, others might have different passport validity requirements. Some simply require a valid passport at time of entry. Many countries require more.

For example, many countries impose 6 month passport validity rules where individuals must have at least six additional months left before their passport expires. In some cases, requirements include other validity periods based on the nature of the traveler's stay and the corresponding visa.

To learn more, be sure to check out our guide to the six month validity rule for passports . We also maintain a list of countries that require six months of validity for entry.

Europe, The Schengen Agreement, and the 3-Month Rule

Many European countries are a part of the Schengen Agreement. This decades-old agreement between 27 European countries was designed to make travel within member nations faster, more efficient, and less expensive.

The agreement requires travelers to have valid passports during their stay, and it is governed by a 3-month passport validity rule. This same rule is also imposed by most other non-member nations across Europe in order to ensure that visitors do not overstay beyond their visa period.

Because of this common policy, countries can more efficiently monitor movement at their borders while reducing any risks connected with extended visits.

If you are planning to travel to Europe, be sure to read more about the Schengen Agreement , its rules, and its history.

Countries with a 3-Month Passport Validity Requirement

photo of Europe on a globe

Again, passport validity is a critical factor for anyone planning international travel. Many European countries that are part of the Schengen Agreement require passports to be valid at least three months after an intended date of departure, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain among others.

Aside from these nations within Europe's borders, other non-European states impose this same 3 month passport rule too. Albania, Guatemala, and Panama being some popular examples.

It is important to research the passport policies for each country you plan on visiting. This is the only way to make sure you don't have hiccups during your travels due to invalid passports or failure to meet requirements regarding particular validity periods (which may also include six month rules). Ensure your U.S. passport holds sufficient time before leaving home by double checking beforehand!

Schengen Area Countries

The following countries are part of the Schengen Agreement and require 3 months of validity remaining on your U.S. passport:

*Travel through the microstates of Monaco , San Marino, and Vatican City are also governed by the Schengen Agreement.

It's necessary that all people in transit through any of these 27 signatory nations are certain their passports maintain at least 90 days of validity throughout the duration of their travels.

Other Countries That Require 3 Months Passport Validity

Be advised that passport validity requirements can change with little notice, so please pay attention to these rules when traveling internationally so you don't stumble upon unexpected complications!

For instance, be sure to pay attention to whether the three month validity rule is calculated based on your date of entry or anticipated date of departure from your desitnation country.

As of 2023, the countries listed below have a 3-month validity rule for U.S. passport holders:

Traveling to Countries with a 3-Month Rule: Tips and Advice

a family walking through an airport together with passports

When it comes to passport validity, researching the passport requirements and regulations of each destination country is key to a successful trip.

Check your passport expiration date

Check if you need a visa.

Certain countries might require a travel visa while others allow you to enter without one. Visas are issued based on why you are traveling (e.g. tourism, school , work , business , etc.). The types and lengths of each visa is determined by each country's bilateral agreements with the United States.

Like passports, visas can take time to acquire, so make sure any permits are obtained well in advance of your trip. Even though some countries offer visas on arrival , there can be issues if you are relying on this type of service.

Be prepared for emergency situations.

Even if you plan on a short trip to a destination with a low (or no) validity rules, you want to be sure you are covered in case you have to stay longer due to a medical or personal emergency. Should you need to travel internationally in a hurry, you want to be sure your passport allows you to take the most direct and efficient route without having to worry about whether your passport has enough months remaining before it expires.

As a rule, it is wise to prepare yourself before any trips by having contingency plans ready just in case anything unpredicted may occur during your trip abroad. There is a chance an unexpected emergency may require you to travel to or through a country with a three or six month validity rule. If your passport has plenty of validity left, this is something you won't have to worry about.

In case of an emergency abroad, such as a lost or stolen passport , you should contact the nearest U.S. consulate or embassy for help. You will not be able to continue your travels without a passport-no matter what the validity rules are for the countries you need to travel to or through.

Based on over 20 years of helping readers with their passport related questions, our best advice is to maintain a valid passport with at least 9 months of validity or more. When your passport gets within a year of its expiration date, don't delay; renew it!

How to Renew Your Passport and Reset Your Passport Validity

Again, if you plan to travel internationally and your passport will not be valid for three months or more, don't wait. Renew your passport as soon as possible. This will ensure you have access to any country that allows American travelers-even if it has a three or six month validity requirement.

To get yourself a new or renewed passport, you need to send an application form along with the required supporting documentation , current passport photos , and pay the passport application fees .

It should be taken into account that the time needed for this renewal process may vary, so making sure everything's in order beforehand can help avoid issues during travel plans. Currently, the time to process a passport application is 6 to 8 weeks . An expedited application will be processed in 2 to 3 weeks .

Be sure to take into account these current processing times for renewal applications before planning any international trips. Also be advised that you will need to submit your current passport as part of the passport renewal process. This means you will not be able to travel internationally until your renewed passport arrives.

Visit our complete guide to renewing a U.S. passport for step-by-step instructions for how to get your passport renewed and our best tips for speeding up the process.

Expedited Passport Services

For those who require a new passport or need to renew theirs in a hurry, expedited services are available. Choosing expedited passport renewal on your application can save you several weeks of waiting for your new travel document, but it may not be fast enough for your needs.

For a faster passport renewal, you can try to make an appointment at one of the 26 regional processing agencies across the U.S. Know that you will need to demonstrate a need to travel internationally within 14 days. This option also includes several additional costs that must be considered.

The fastest and most efficient way to get a passport renewed is through a passport expediting service . These professionals use their expertise and experience to get you a passport faster than you likely can on your own. While they charge a fee for their services, these fees are often much less than what it costs to travel to a regional passport agency on your own and potentially wait days for your new passport to be issued.

Should you opt to go this route, consult our directory of top passport expediters .

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i travel with less than 3 months on my passport.

When planning any international travel, it is important to ensure that your passport will be valid for the duration of your trip and beyond. You should have at least three months remaining on your passport before going abroad. Many countries may require a validity period of six months or more.

Most airlines refuse boarding if you don't meet this requirement, so make sure you check in advance! To avoid issues while traveling overseas. For maximum travel flexibility, make certain that there's still enough time left on your passport by checking that it is valid for at least six months after departure dates from each destination on your itinerary.

Can I travel with 2 months on my passport?

Most countries require that your passport remain valid for a minimum of either three or six months beyond the duration of your trip. If you are planning to travel to one of these locations, you can't travel with only two months left. To make sure that you are able to have a secure and safe journey, be certain to check all details in advance like dates or other information about any passports used before taking off.

However, some countries require only that your passport is valid upon entry. For peace of mind, always be sure your passport has enough extra validity remaining to account for any potential emergencies or disruptions to your travel plans.

Can I travel to Mexico if my passport expires in 3 months?

As long as your passport is still valid for the duration of the trip, you may go to Mexico even if it's expiring in three months. Mexican travel regulations don't mandate any minimum validity period for passports.

Can I travel to Canada if my passport expires in 3 months?

You can go to Canada as long as you have a valid passport during your stay-even if it's expiring in three months. Canadian travel requirements do not have any minimum validity period for U.S. passport holders.
