Rain Jackets, Rain Coats and Ponchos

When we first visited Disneyland Anaheim in December a few years ago, it rained both days we were there.

We had to buy a Disney poncho from the park store and boy, it was pricey at ~$25/each!

If you know someone who has been to Disney for more than 2 days and didn’t have to get wet in the rain, then they are super lucky!

You can save so much by buying them online – this Poncho Family Pack of 8 Is dirt cheap and perfect to always keep in your travel bags!

While I personally like ponchos, I prefer raincoats for my preschool age kids since they are too small for most kid-sized ponchos!

We have the toddler raincoat by Columbia – excellent quality and works 100%!

Make sure to buy rain gear that’s lightweight and folds easily.

Keep a waterproof wet bag to stash the wet jackets away when it stops raining!

Also, it is always better to pack rain gear while planning a Disney Trip even though rain is not forecasted.

Water Bottles

Since we started traveling with the kids, food and drink-related items top my packing lists and gift registries.

Disney World and all Disney Parks are enormous and water bottles are absolutely necessary.

Sure you can buy one – but at $4 per bottle, it’s not cheap!

I make it a point to fill up whenever we pass a food joint or water spout.

Plus if you have pre-schoolers or toddlers then they ARE GOING TO WANT that Mickey Mouse bottle in the Disney Store.

It is much cheaper to buy them in advance and save a few bucks.

Checking the Disney App for ride times and wait times, taking photos with Disney characters all take their toll on smartphone batteries.

I have this portable Powerbank by Anker and it works excellently for my smartphones, iPod and more. It makes a nice Disney park gift.

Hand held USB Fans

The weather is always hot and humid in Disney World. These mini USB rechargeable hand-held fans are life-savers.

They are lightweight, fold-able and have 3-speed settings and perfect as personal fans.

We attach them to strollers and the kids are happy as clams.

Portable or handheld misting fans are great alternatives to USB fans.

The misting fans will spray water and help keep the kids cool and entertained on Disney trips.

You can even put ice in the water compartment of some fans so that the water is really cool.

You can actually buy Minnie Mouse or Mickey Mouse handheld misting fan with Florida written on it for the kids.

For a non-Disney version for the adults, get the deluxe misting fan which is big enough to keep ice or the super small but efficient keychain misting fan .

The foldable handheld cooling fan is also a great option.

Hand Sanitizer

Disney World is so big and so crowded that you don’t even want to start thinking about the germs in there.

Add to that, we are in 2021 and the pandemic is still here!

Gift some hand sanitizers for peace of mind plus get an award for thinking of the most hygienic of Disney vacation gifts!

Off course you don’t need Disney but these matching Minnie and Mickey hand sanitizers with holders are so cute and cheap plus attach to backpacks and purses.

Guests can purchase Disney World holiday souvenirs all year long at Disney’s Days of Christmas Shop (Disney Springs) and Ye Old Christmas Shoppe ( Magic Kingdom ), as well as at most souvenir shops during November and December. For a few more dollars, have your Disney ornaments personalized with names, dates, or other special messages.

7. Pressed Pennies

Pressed Pennies are a popular and inexpensive Disney World souvenir.  You will find pressed penny souvenir stations throughout the resort (visit PressCoins.com for locations).

It works by simply adding two quarters – plus a penny – to the pressed penny machine. The machine then flattens, elongates, and imprints a Disney-themed design onto your penny.  For pressed quarters, simply add four quarters – plus another quarter for pressing. Be sure to bring clean and shiny coins with you!

Stopping at each location to collect pressed pennies – while trekking around Disney World – can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. These pressed coins are also great Disney World souvenirs to display. Consider showcasing your different Disney designs in a Disney souvenir coin album.

8. Epcot Passport Kit

The Epcot World Showcase Passport Kit is one of the best Epcot souvenirs for kids.

With the purchase of a kit, you receive a Mickey Mouse button, a blank passport, and stamps for each of the eleven World Showcase countries. Keep documents of your travel with stamps from each country, jot down notes of all your observations and adventures, and receive departure validation when leaving a country.

Since Epcot World Showcase isn’t all that exciting to most children, this kit keeps youngsters more engaged as you travel from one country to the next. It’s also fun and enriching for adults!

9. Haunted Portraits

If you are searching for ghoulishly fun souvenirs, head over to the Memento Mori gift shop inside Magic Kingdom. For a $19.95 fee, you can have a haunted portrait created from your own likeness. The portrait may not be flattering, but it’s certainly a unique Disney World souvenir!

It should be noted that haunted portraits allow only one person per photograph, and the fee is not part of the Memory Maker or PhotoPass service. Memento Mori is located near Haunted Mansion (naturally) and offers a fun collection of haunted Disney souvenirs.

10. Souvenir Mugs and Drinkware

Coffee mugs and other drinkware have long been a souvenir standard. Many Disney attractions offer their own versions of these mementos, including The Orange Bird sipper cup at Sunshine Tree Terrace (Magic Kingdom), the Country Bears Jug at Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World Resorts refillable mugs (at onsite resorts), the Lighthouse souvenir cup at The Boathouse restaurant (Disney Springs), and LeFou’s Brew Stein at Gaston’s Tavern (Magic Kingdom).

If you want personalized glassware, head to Arribas (Disney Springs), where you can have your name engraved into a Disney-themed souvenir glass mug.

For cost savings and added convenience, purchase your Disney souvenir drinkware online. Amazon has a great selection of mugs, cups, and glassware with fun Disney themes.

11. Pick-A-Pearl

As Coco Chanel once said, “a woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls.” If you like pearls – or you’re just curious how pearls are formed in nature – head over to one of the four Pick-A-Pearl stations inside Disney parks.

For a $17 fee, you first choose an oyster from the tank, then a cast member cuts open the oyster to reveal your pearl (or maybe two!), and lastly, your pearl is measured, bagged, and given to you to take home. Make your souvenir pearl extra magical by having it set into custom jewelry while you’re there.

The main Pick-A-Pearl locations are inside Mitsukoshi (Japan Pavilion at Epcot), at a kiosk near the Stormalong Bay pool (Beach Club Resort), at Disney Springs (near Once Upon a Toy store), and inside Blizzard Beach . For the most authentic and exciting location, we recommend heading to Mitsukoshi in the Japan Pavilion, where enthusiastic cast members bang on drums as your souvenir pearl is revealed. It’s a lot of fun to watch!

12. Monorail Playset

For most vacationers, a ride on the monorail is an experience that is thoroughly enjoyable and uniquely Disney. Kids are particularly mesmerized by this magical traveling experience. So, what better way to commemorate your child’s first monorail ride than with a fun and interactive monorail playset?

The genuine Disney Parks Monorail Playset is a truly wonderful Disney souvenir. This particular model comes with the monorail, tracks, and eight iconic Disney characters, but you can also add other components (like Cinderella’s Castle and The Contemporary) to recreate an authentically magical Disney scene inside your home.

Gift ideas for Disney World-bound families

For most families that are planning trips to Disney World, it’s a big deal.

It’s also an expensive deal.

This is a good chance to get extended family involved and have them get gifts that will make the trip even more special and reduce some of the costs for you.

You know those racks of gift cards that you see at grocery stores, Target, Wal-mart, etc.? They often have Disney gift cards as well.

These cards can be used at Disney Stores, Disney theme parks and Disney Cruise Line.

Things to keep busy along the way

Keeping busy while on the plane or in the car makes the time go by faster for kids. My favorite way to entertain kids is with Klutz activity books .

My kids have owned almost all of those books at some point over the years. Be sure to check what is required of each activity book as some may not work well in the car (unless you really like the idea of glitter on your car’s seats).

Autograph book (with fat pen)

Disney has a few of their autograph books online for $7-12.

Sharpies are great for characters to sign with because they can grasp them easily.

Beach towels

Consider getting personalized beach towels from DisneyStore.com .

You can pick up ponchos in a lot of places, but there are some especially cute ones online that would be great to pack for a trip to Disney World. The ponchos pictured below can all be found on Amazon .

Misting fan

Misting fans are reallllly handy when you’re going during a warm time (which is most of the time). The ones you can buy at Disney World are actually really great quality, but also much more expensive than the ones you can buy elsewhere.

You can buy the fan pictured below on Amazon . Many are also available seasonally at stores like Wal-mart.

(Be sure to check reviews on the fans before you buy them. Some just don’t work well.)

If you have a child in a stroller, I highly recommend stroller clip fans as well.

The blades are made of a soft foam that won’t hurt a child’s fingers.

During the winter months, DisneyStore.com doesn’t have much in the swimwear category, but eBay actually has some great options .

Little girl clothes are so cute. I wish I still had a little one to buy these for.

Kids often wear costumes at Disney World, especially when attending character dinning meals.

The large park ponchos will also cover a stroller really well during rain. They kept our kids dry rolling around the park when it was pouring one year. They thought it was a blast in their rolling hide out. Haha

I just want to point out something. Many, many (and many more) people think that they will save money on rain ponchos by buying them at discount stores before their trip - but what a LOT of people do not know is that Disney offers a lifetime warranty on their in-park ponchos. It's true! If you accidentally rip a poncho (or if it gets torn at all, say a snap comes out, or something like that), all you have to do is take it to any Disneyland or Disney World park kiosk or store (that sells them), and they will GIVE YOU A NEW ONE with NO questions asked! (As far as I know, this works only at park/resort shops, not at mall-based Disney stores.)

Good point! We have also discovered that the ponchos they sell in the parks just work better for us. They are lighter and easier to fold/carry around than the regular ponchos I had bought at home, but they don't fall apart like the disposable ones (and they don't feel like trash bags!). We originally swore we would never buy one from the parks, but we are certainly glad we did!

14 Ideas for Doing a Disney World Trip Reveal Surprise

So you’ve booked a trip to Disney World and now it’s time to share the news with your family! Do you want to do a special surprise Disney World trip reveal so that you can capture their reactions?

This is quite common with Disney World trips and they often make for some of the best videos. Who doesn’t love watching someone scream with joy or cry happy tears when they realize their dream trip is about to become a reality?

  Here are some of my favourite ideas I have seen when doing a surprise Disney World trip reveal:

Mickey Balloons

This one works best if you are revealing the trip as part of a gift. It involves wrapping up a large box filled with some balloons, and some added magic is if the balloons are Mickey themed. When your family opens up the Disney World surprise box, the balloons will come flying out and you can include a message in the box (or attached to the string of the balloons) that says “You’re Going to Disney World!”

Scavenger Hunt

This one involves a bit more planning and preparation, but the result is super fun. You create a bunch of clues to lead them on a scavenger hunt and hide them throughout your house.

The kids often get so wrapped up in the fun of the game, that they don’t even realize that there may be a big surprise at the end. The treasure at the end is so worth it and will get some great reactions!

Reveal It When You Hit the Gates (Road Trip)

If you are driving to Disney World, then you can certainly pull this surprise off if your children are young. You tell them you are going somewhere else and then hit the road for Florida.

If they are young enough, they won’t pay attention to the road signs and will be unaware of where you are going. Once you are about to enter the Disney World property, now it is time to get them ready for your surprise trip reveal. Tell them to pay attention and look out the window. The Disney World gates are hard to miss and they’ll get pretty excited once they spot them.  

Fake Airport Drop-Off

This surprise is for parents that are really good and covert at keeping secrets. You’ll need to keep the trip a secret from them until the last minute and also manage to pack all their stuff without them noticing. Do you have a kid or loved one that loves puzzles? Time to get creative and design a special puzzle made just for them! You can create your own design for your puzzle for free on Canva.com .

Once you have your image created with the message “You’re Going to Disney World!” on it, you can upload it to a puzzle making service. You could use a site such as  www.createjigsawpuzzles.com  or Vistaprint . Then, once you receive it, give it to the one you are surprising and watch them piece it together.

Advent Calendar Surprise

Are advent calendars a big hit in your house during the month of December? Why not make your own and customize the contents? Make a homemade advent calendar and provide the kids with little hints throughout the month leading up to Christmas. You can then have the big reveal inside the day of the 25th which will make for a fun Christmas morning!

Gift Them Their Magic Bands and Disney Goodies

Early Morning Surprise

Give them a reason to jump out of bed! If you have an early morning departure, keep the secret up until the very last minute. Wake them up when it’s time to go with their bags all packed and ready to go.

They’ll wake up feeling like they are in a dream and you will surely have no trouble getting them out of bed once you let them know where you are going!

Mail Them a Letter

Kids love getting mail. What better way to surprise them with a letter from their favourite Mouse! Send them a letter and then have them open it and read it aloud. You can find a Disney World surprise letter template online like this one from mommytravels.net.

Disney Mad Libs

Mad libs are a fun game where you have to fill in the blanks of a story before you read it aloud. Here is an example of a printable you can use to announce your trip. Have your child give you some answers for the blank sections and then give the completed story to them to read.

There are so many ways you can trick your kids and surprise them with a Disney vacation, but I really like how this mom orchestrated this one:

Box in a Box in a Box in a Box…..

This one is great if the surprise is a birthday gift. Make them work for it and wrap up several boxes in to each other making them go through several layers until they get to the very end. You could make the reveal their MagicBand or perhaps a letter saying “You’re going to Disney World!”. It makes for a really fun game and the anticipation really builds up as they open each layer.

We got plush Mickey and Minnie head easter baskets. We put in Disney shirts, their Magic bands, sunblock, a handheld fan/misting bottle, beach towels, goggles and Mickey shaped goldfish crackers. Gave them to our girls and asked them to figure out the surprise.

Can I ask how you swapped the fortunes?

We have never surprised our kids with a trip to Disney, but we have surprised my best friends daughter(also my daughters best friend) and our kids that my friend and her daughter were going with us on our trip last summer. I made a video at MAgic Kingdom a couple months before her birthday and for her birthday showed the video to her and my kids to reveal that they were coming with us to Disney World. My kids knew about the trip but not that our friends were joining us. I’m planning to surprise them for our spring break trip this coming year. Hoping I can hold out until it time to wake them for the drive to the airport.

These are the ultimate Disney World souvenirs! I’ve been collecting Disney ornaments for 25+ years.

My Christmas tree is bursting with ornaments, I have so many I can barely fit them all! 

What makes these such great souvenirs is each time you visit the parks, there are new ones to choose from.

Some are dated to celebrate the year you visited, or commemorate special events or occasions. 

If you visit the Christmas Shoppe in Magic Kingdom or the Disney’s Days of Christmas in Disney Springs, you can choose to customize ornaments in celebration of something special.

Do this early on in your trip though, as the customized ornaments sometimes take a few days to finish before you can pick them up.

11. Disney Inspired Artwork

The Disney artwork is one of the most special souvenirs you can buy.

I find artwork to be very personal and so this type of souvenir may be more for yourself than a gift to others, but no matter who you are buying for, there are so many beautiful options to choose from.

Not only do you have stores dedicated solely to art, there is also the ever-popular EPCOT Festival of the Arts that takes place in January and February.

This is a wonderful showcase of widely known and local artists sharing their own gift of Disney art.

13. Disney Shirts

I have piles and piles of these. It’s amazing how many I have amassed in the last few years.

A Disney t-shirt never goes out of style and for that reason, I consider this one of the best Disney World souvenirs you can buy!

Here’s a little tip, you don’t actually have to buy them at Disney World.

While it’s great if you find one you love, nowadays there are just as many cute ones at Five Below, Target, Walmart or even in the small shops we know and love on Instagram or Etsy.

14. Travel Guide/Pictorial Books

I love collecting travel guide books. Much like park maps, it’s so much fun to thumb through an older version of a Walt Disney World guide book and revisit what the parks once were.

Guide books and picture books are nostalgic and represent yesteryear.

They are a great edition to any coffee table or bookshelf and make for wonderful souvenirs for yourself or others.

15. Disney Ears

The quintessential Disney World souvenir! No one can resist donning a pair of Mickey or Minnie Mouse ears. And Disney World certainly has quite the variety! 

There are literally ears sold for every single occasion and theme. Some prefer to buy ears from small shops, but Disney World has their fair amount to choose from. 

More recently Disney has collaborated with some big names and brands (Loungefly, Coach, Harveys, Heidi Klum, and more!) to create ears.

Some cost quite a penny, but if you are a hard core collector and love to sport your ears, you may not hesitate to spend the bigger bucks. On average though, most ears cost around $25-$30 a pair.

My Final Thoughts on Choosing the Best Disney World Souvenirs

As you can see from this long list of souvenirs, there really is something for everyone with varying price options.

You can find some of the most economical souvenirs or you can go big.

No matter what you decide, be sure to choose something that you love and that represents the magical time you spent in the parks.

You want to look at that souvenir years later and allow it to bring back fond memories.

I still have my Dumbo plush, pen and autograph book that my parents bought me on my first trip to Walt Disney World 35+ years ago. I treasure them, and always will.

How do I give someone theme park tickets as a gift?

Follow these steps to give theme park tickets as a gift

• Review your ticket options on the Walt Disney World Theme Park Tickets page . Select the option that is right for you and proceed to checkout.
• Go to the “Guest Information” section on the checkout page and select the “This order will be a gift” checkbox.
• Enter the first and last name of the recipient and make your purchase.

Please keep in mind that gift orders will not be available immediately. It may take up to 24 hours after you receive your email order confirmation before the recipient can link their tickets to their Disney account or pick up the tickets you gifted them at a theme park ticket window.

Therefore, you will not be able to gift theme park tickets to a recipient who plans to visit Walt Disney World Resort within 2 days from the date of your purchase. Instead, consider the option of gifting the recipient a Disney Gift Card eGift , which can be delivered to them in less than 24 hours.

Picking Up Gift Tickets

To pick up the ticket order at the theme park ticket window:

• The gift recipient will need to present the gift receipt and a valid government-issued photo ID.
• The name you provided for the gift recipient must match the name on the ID.
• If the recipient is a minor, the minor's parent or legal guardian will need to accompany the minor and present a valid government-issued photo ID.
