Stealing home: How travel teams are eroding community baseball
The biggest problem with travel teams in my opinion is that young kids destroy their arms. When I was 13, I played on a local team but had 3-4 teammates who at the same time played on a travel team. They would play 5 games in a weekend 200 miles away then come back home and pitch a full 7 inning game (all of them were pitchers BTW).
