Christopher Cross is a singer songwriter hailing from San Antonio, Texas, USA who was born on the 3rrd of May 1954. Although he is best known for his multi-platinum selling self-titled debut album, he has record a further handful of albums since and performs live to this day.
Christopher Cross is an infamous name in music history. He is one of the best known examples of the Best New Artist Grammy’s infamous curse, the fact that an alarming amount of the recipients of that very award seemingly crashed and burned soon after receiving it. This may be true of Starland Vocal Band and A Taste Of Honey, but Christopher Cross is a very different beast altogether, and definitely one deserving of your time.
Before rising to fame, Cross first performed with a San Antonio based rock band called Flash. Those that only know Cross for his smooth pop hits might be surprised to know that he spend his time in Flash’s ranks thrashing away at a Flying V guitar covering Deep Purple tracks through Marshall amp stacks. It’s a long way between that and “Sailing” but there was a long time between those two events. Almost nine years in fact.
Cross signed his solo record contract in 1978, and if anyone successfully predicted the album’s success; they would have been called an optimistic fool. “Christopher Cross” was a worldwide smash, with four singles charting in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100, Cross gaining a slot opening for The Eagles and 5 million copies sold in the US alone.
Then came then1980 Grammy awards, and if there was ever a way to make winning five of the most prestigious awards in the pop world a bad career move, Christopher Cross showed exactly how it could be done. Namely it involves beating Pink Floyd, whose timeless “The Wall” album Cross beat to Album of the Year.
A second album “Another Page” followed in 1983 that was a strong showing, but then MTV showed up. Cross just wasn’t the personality that was needed to make an impact in the first days of the music video and his commercial success took a harsh down turn because of it. The 90s saw him produce some of his most critically acclaimed work, however, and when you have an artist with as much commercial success behind him already, that’s what counts.
Since then he’s shown up in the most surprising places. He appeared on Tina Fey’s sitcom 30 Rock and his song “Ride Like The Wind” featured in Will Ferrel’s Anchorman sequel. Clearly, Cross is an artist with far more to give than history says so. Any fan of soft rock will be very pleasantly surprised, and he comes highly recommended.
Live reviews
Five Grammy awards for a debut album? If that isn’t a foreshadowing of musical genius and success, then I don’t know what is. His singer/songwriter career has blossomed over the years, and as he is still touring and gigging the circuits nationally, and internationally, it’s a great opportunity to catch a performance from a great musician.
The great thing about Cross is that whether you know his songs or not, you will find yourself singing along by the end of the track. Seeing him in concert was eye opening. I’d heard rumours of Cross giving short background synopsis for his songs, and it was fantastic to hear this in person. There were man songs that I had misinterpreted, and it was great to hear their motivations and real stories.
It’s over 30 years since Cross’s days of glory, so it’s understandable to question whether his voice will be up to the challenge of 120 minute sets. The answer is most definitely yes. Although he can’t belt out the high notes to the levels he may previously have done, his voice is strong as ever. The entire audience were on their feet screaming and cheering by the end of the set, absolutely everyone loved it and couldn’t wait for the encore, which was Sailing – the best song of the set!

The success of Christopher Cross's debut album has always cast a large shadow over the following career of the Texan musician. You cannot doubt the strength of this first release as it features a number of hit singles on both sides of the atlantic and won the emerging artist an impressive five grammy awards.
He has consistently been releasing albums since that infamous 1979 release although none have unfortunately garnered the same amount of success. Luckily though the fanbase has remained loyal all these years later so there is still definitely a reason for the performer now in his 60s to continue touring around the globe. They are as equally enthusiastic to all tracks performed, just not those chosen from the first two releases and this clearly means a lot to Chris. He thanks the fans for their support and seems to delighted to notice younger fans who would have discovered his music at a later date. He unites the room for mass singalong to a finale of 'Ride Like the Wind'.
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Christopher Cross in concert last Wednesday night.
As you would expect, he and the band sang the usual favorites, including my all time favorite "Sailing". It was awesome to hear it sung live after so many years of hearing it recorded. It was every bit as good live as it is on vinyl.
All the band were highly polished musicians, I cannot pick a favorite from amongst them
Excellent night. Great music. Highly polished performers. Stunning.
Always liked his music, still listen to it now but we thought. The music was too loud for his voice the first 2 songs didn’t sound right, it got better after the third. It was good that he sang the more famous albums the first two as we would have struggled to hear the lyrics. Would I go again ? Probably not. The theatre was lovely easy to find. Parking was found on a side street and was free close to the venue
The concert was great. Great musicians from France & Denmark...Good sound. Just Lennon's Imagine as extra...Missed a few favorite songs as always...Every turn of the world, Rendezvous, In the blink of an eye, Isn't it love, Someday, Never stop believing...Don't miss this artist if you like the sound of American Westcoast from the 80-ties as Michael McDonald, Bill Labounty a.s.o.
It really takes you back when music was music people used to get along life was good and just damn good music. You can really appreciate artist and watch musicians play music and see that Talent displayed and just hearing the music just takes you away like the song sailing thanks
The show was excellent. Christopher Cross sounded great as did his musicians/band. It was my first time at The Lincoln Center, which is a really nice, small venue. I only wish that Christopher Cross had brought some of his older CDs with him to sell instead of his newer CD.
Excellent concert! Chris still has it, master story teller also. He started slow, but by the third song he had hit full stride and knocking them out of the park. One of the few artists I actually enjoyed listening to his new work. Sailing was a dream. Highly recommended!
Waited 30 years to see him live and wasn't disappointed. Sang all his hits and more, played longer than advertised and told a bit of his life story throughout the evening. The band were good and supported well and the venue was top notch, see you soon
The show was awesome!!!!! One of my favorites! Love Mr. Cross and all his fantastic work! I loved the interactions with the crowd! Some things were a bit personal, but hey, it made everyone laugh! I cannot wait to see him live again!!

Christopher Cross
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3
7pm | Doors open 6pm
Texas Public Radio presents Christopher Cross at The Espee.
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1980 self-titled debut album, winning five Grammy Awards, including—for the first time in Grammy history—the “Big Four” most prestigious awards: Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist.
In a career spanning more than four decades, Cross has sold over 10 million albums. His music has garnered five Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, an Emmy nomination and five Top 10 singles.
Within a year of the first album’s release, Cross joined music royalty Burt Bacharach to write “Arthur’s Theme,” for the movie Arthur , which won an Academy Award for Best Song. With his 1983 release, Another Page , Cross was again in the Top 10 with the singles “All Right” and “Think of Laura.” His song, “Swept Away,” composed for the hit television series, Growing Pains , was nominated for an Emmy.
Cross started his own label and, since 2007, has released 8 albums of new material, including A Christopher Cross Christmas and The Café Carlyle Sessions , jazz treatments of hits and favorites born out of a residency at the famous Hotel Carlyle in New York City. Take Me as I Am , released in 2018, features richly-crafted melodies and elegant guitar work. The latest project for Christopher Cross Records is aptly titled The Complete Works . Released in 2020, it celebrates his 40th anniversary as a recording artist and is a collection of all 12 previously-released CDs, one CD of singles and bonus tracks, and a pink vinyl containing one track from each album chosen by Christopher.
Even though the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the 40th Anniversary tour, starting in 2021, he is once again performing the carefully-crafted songs and music his fans enjoy, starting with “Sailing” and “Ride Like the Wind” from his Grammy-winning debut album and continuing through the decades of his ever-changing but always excellent material.

Yoke lesson for everyone, a little about love.
- Chris: “My reflections upon our recent Pilgrimage to the Holy Land begin with thoughts of the practical and end with the spiritual. Practically speaking, the scope of the Pilgrimage couldn’t be improved upon. It included visits to all of the most important places associated with Our Lord. I will surely recommend this Pilgrimage to my brother priests, to religious and to the laity.†Fr. Douglas Mathers NYC
- Chris: “I just wanted you to know how much our trip meant to me. I’m sure I have not yet experienced all the ramifications of it. Truly, it is a life changing event!†Shelly NY
- Dear Chris: “You are to be commended for your generosity of commitment in your special ministry to bring priest, religious and lay people to the Holy Land. I am amazed at the influence you have had in my life and beyond in bringing people to Israel and look at how many lives have been touched! I stated to you before and I will repeat it: since visiting Israel and the Holy Land, my life will never be the same again.†Fr. William Gordon NY
- “It is you, Chris, who made the experience of a life-time come alive within the soul of my life as you prayed the Gospel passages, shared faith insights from your own experiences at the holiest of places, and gave from the heart of you beautiful gifts that will be treasured and cherished. Thank you from the very deep core of my being for this once-in-a-life time experience.†Sr. Mary Eamon NY
- “Thank you Chris, for a wonderful trip and making it possible for priests to experience, in a prayerful and joyful way, the Holy Land. You are an exceptional persona with an exceptional apostolate. I just hope more priests and lay people take advantage of what you are making possible. The Scriptures will never be the same…and we will never be the same!†Fr. Carmen Perry Pa.
- “My trip to the Holy Land is one that I shall not forget. I was looking for a trip that would be filled with information but enfleshed with the spiritual experience of the places were visited. On our trip with you Chris, I experienced all of this and even more than I had anticipated. I shall ever be grateful to you for desiring to share your spiritual experience of the Holy Land with me and others.†Fr. Xavier Goulet, OFM Conv. Minnesota

R. Stack Canada
- Chris: “I want you to know that each day was a wonderful day in my life that was spent on the pilgrimage. The reverence for each holy place visited with prayer and reflection. I pray that more priests, deacons, sisters and lay people take advantage of your pilgrimage and your ministry.†Fr. John Peters Arizona
Catholic Holy land Pilgrimage Tours Travels Catholic Tours – Catholic trips Christopher Cross KHS
Pilgrimage tours holy lands, pilgrimage trips catholic community.
Chris made his first pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1982. On the last day of his journey, he decided to go to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray the rosary and to thank God for permitting him to make this most holy pilgrimage. In those predawn hours in the Garden of Gethsemane, Chris asked God if it was possible that he could make another trip to the Holy Land. He never dreamed that God would see fit to permit him to make fifty-five more pilgrimages! His first sixteen trips consisted of groups of priests from the United States, Canada and Europe. His itinerary was designed for priests who were going on retreat. After numerous trips to Israel, there were many priests who asked him if he would be interested in taking over groups of lay people. This was the beginning of his ministry of leading many pilgrims to the Holy Land and showing them where Jesus lived, died and rose from the dead. Chris believes that most people who travel to the Holy Land will never experience what his groups experience mentally, physically and spiritually. Several priests who had traveled to the Holy Land with other groups have said that they had never seen some of the sites that they saw with Chris and that they had never experienced a more spiritual pilgrimage. Chris has had four priests who traveled with him come up to him at the Tel Aviv Airport and tell him that they were considering leaving the priesthood until they took this trip. These pilgrimages with Mr. Cross have a life changing effect upon all those who undertake them. Chris has made over 71 pilgrims to the Holy Land and is a very experienced licensed tour guide. Chris has averaged and made 2 trips a year for the last 33 years. He is well known throughout the Holy Land both by the Franciscans and tour guides.
