We certainly recommend that you have an accompanying person to assist you mainly upon discharge and during your stay in Cyprus until your departure and, of course, during your return flight. It is allowed to have one accompanying person with you in the hospital, following that, he or she has a negative 24-hour' Rapid Test if fully vaccinated or a PCR test if not vaccinated.
• Are there any COVID restrictions in your hospital? Following our internal Health and Safety Regulations and the Cyprus Ministry of Health Regulations, we require a 24-hour’ PCR test before entering our premises if not fully vaccinated or a 24-hour’ Rapid Test if fully vaccinated with three vaccines.
• Could I have my pre-operational exams in your hospital? You can certainly do so since we have a complete and technologically advanced diagnostic department where you can perform all your preop tests. That would require your arrival in Cyprus at least two days before the scheduled surgery.
• Are there any COVID special requirements entering Cyprus? Currently, there are no particular entry requirements, but we suggest you check before your flight.
• Will I be able to meet with my surgeon prior to receiving the treatment? Once you have received the medical plan and quotation, we will arrange a video call to meet with the treating doctor. Moreover, on your arrival and prior to receiving your treatment, we will arrange a consultation with your doctor.
• Are there flight connections to Cyprus? Cyprus is connected with direct flights to most European countries or has regular stop-over flights to the rest of the world.

Travelling for health purposes is a combination of two main themes, namely the importance of getting the best medical treatment as possible while having a good leisure time (Clift & Grabowsky, 1997).

Brief History

Travelling for medical reasons started around the sixth century BC in India, Greece and Persia (Douglas & Derrett 2001), and its early form was mostly concerned with the therapeutic values of particular environments, such as the famous spa of Bath in England. Obviously, medical tourism had to evolve in order to accommodate modern needs and changed significantly. According to Bookman and Bookman (2007:42), Medical Tourism is growing only one step behind providers’ imagination. Creative services that compete in novelty, quality, and relevance are popping up daily. As a result, it became an increasingly profitable market for many countries.

The 5 key drivers of medical tourism:

• Technology: Technological improvements like more efficient global transportation and communications systems drive medical tourism. Transportation according to Duval (2007) is one of the more ubiquitous global economic sectors and its growth shares synergies with growth in tourism. Moreover, artificial intelligence techniques can provide support in many areas relevant for tourism, like promotion, information access, decisions and actions, preparation for the visit, the visit and even after the visit. An understanding of motivation is key to understanding tourist behavior, and to answering the question of why and where people travel. The EU Directive

The EU Proposal for a Directive on patient’s rights in cross border healthcare was published in 2008. It provides an added stimulus to the already growing number of medical tourists who seek hospital treatment elsewhere in the EU. Its aim is to create a formal framework for cross border healthcare and remove the obstacles that patients face if they wish to travel for treatment in other EU countries (Allen 2009).

The Directive has come about from a desire to create a European market in healthcare, and to some extent as a result of European Court judgments which have upheld the rights of patients to gain reimbursement for treatment in other countries where they have been subject to "undue delay" in their own country. The Directive proposes a number of developments in cross border healthcare, including reimbursement of medical tourists, patient safety and quality issues, European cooperation on healthcare, assessment of new medical technology and standards for e-health, and transfer of patient information between member states.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and is known for its excellent climate, warm people, diverse cultural and natural beauties. Cyprus is the historical and cultural center of the Mediterranean.

Where is North Cyprus?

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Eastern Mediterranean, after Sicily and Sardinia. 70 km North to Turkey, 100 km East to neighbour Syria, 370 km South to Egypt, 950 km NorthWest to Greece and 170 km SouthEast to Lebanon and Israel. The surface area of ​​Cyprus is 9251 km2. North Cyprus is 3355 km2. Southern Cyprus is 5896 km2.

Between 1963 and 1974, the rift between them has become a war because of the cultural differences of the Turkish and Greek communities. After the military intervention of Turkey, in 1974 Cyprus was divided into two independent states. On the North is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and on the South is the Greek Cypriot Administration.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Smaller than Sicily and Sardinia, but bigger than Corsica and Crete. The whole area of ​​the island is 3,584 square miles (9,250 square kilometers).

With the military intervention of Turkey called "Peace Operation" and the result of social conflicts and wars that lasted for 11 years between 1963 and 1974.  Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities constituting 96% of the island population and is divided into two independent states. Cyprus has been divided into north and south after 1974. Now the Turkish Cypriots live in the north of the island, and the Greek Cypriots live in the south of the island. A boundary known as the "Green Line" separates Nicosia, which is the capital of both regions, separates the two states from each other.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is about 160 km long and the largest region is 65 km. Its total surface area is 3,550 km (1,357 square miles) and this is about 36% of the whole island. Northern Cyprus is divided into five provinces as an administration. (Nicosia, Famagusta, Girne, Güzelyurt, and Iskele.) There are six main settlements: Nicosia, Famagusta, Girne, Güzelyurt, Lefke and Iskele. Nicosia is the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

There is a typical Mediterranean climate in Cyprus. The summers (June to September) are dry and hot, and the winters (from November to March) are generally rainy and warm. The spring and autumn seasons are warm and funny. The average annual temperature is 20 ° C (68 ° F). The average temperature in summer is 30 ° C (90 ° F) and in the coldest months (January and February) is 10 ° C (50 ° F).

The sellers are welcoming and always make shopping very enjoyable. Souvenir shops sell copper, silver and bronze items. Turkish dolls, stringy and backgammon sets can be found easily. Gold jewelery, leather clothes and fabrics are sold at very cheap prices. The prices are usually fixed and there is no bargain. The vast majority of stores are open between 8:00 - 13:00 and 15:30 - 20:00. Unlike other Mediterranean countries, non-ceramic handicrafts and handicrafts are sold in private stores.

Ideal for a calm and relaxing holiday, Northern Cyprus is not very active, but there are few restaurants, bars and nightclubs in the coastal towns, with plenty of restaurants, including Indian, Chinese, French and Italian restaurants. During summertime, you can spend pleasant evenings in a romantic atmosphere in the restaurants and bars surrounding Girne harbor. Yemeni; In the past, the use of yemeni was very common, revealing the richness of the women's world with various ornaments. Yemen used in Cyprus are generally in the form

of a square; Only the edges are decorated with motifs, the interior is left plain. Then branches and flower motifs were printed on the yemeni. Today, yemeni tradition as a scarf in the modern sense is maintained on another plane.  

Lefkara; Lefkara is one of the most important local crafts in Cyprus. Lefkara  is divided into two groups; "Lefkara on linen" and "Lefkara on needle". A pillow is used during the

process of both. While Lefkara is made for the people's own use in the past periods, the latter is made for commercial purposes and today especially in the context of tourist handicrafts.

• Quality of the associated services (targeted endorsement and sustained upgrading of the provided services in the health and tourism industries);
• Provision of incentives;
• Active participation of the government through private-public ventures.

Peace talks: greeks-turks revive cyprus medical tourism hopes.

After months of dickering, Greek and Turkish leaders from Cyprus are back at the bargaining table to forge a system of power sharing that may even open a window of opportunity for frustrated medical tourism officials who believe their industry can pump money and jobs into the financially strapped and ethically split island nation.

Representatives of the island's two largest ethnic groups Greeks and Turks said the renewed talks might lead to a two-zone federation that would reunite the island, which has been split for decades, and rekindle efforts to make Cyprus a more attractive destination for medical tourism. ‍

As the two sides expressed their determination to reach a structured agreement, the Medical Tourism Association was holding talks of its own at an annual meeting of the Cyprus Health Service Promotion Board late last month in Nicosia, the capital city currently divided by a U.N.-administered buffer zone. ‍

Cyprus has an excellent healthcare system that offers value and quality for not only Cypriot populations, but for patients across all of Europe, said Jeffrey Coxon, education and engagement manager for Medical Tourism Association Europe . A strong Cyprus economy will further spawn modern hospitals and well-trained medical professionals the core components for any medical tourism destination.

EU Cross-Border Movement

Turkey has been in control of about one-third of Cyprus since 1974, when it invaded following a coup attempt by officers seeking unification with Greece. Relations between Greek and Turkish Cypriots deteriorated quickly following independence from Britain in 1960. ‍

Leaders on both sides believe a united Cyprus would have a positive impact first and foremost on Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots and throughout a region that promotes cross-border movement of citizens within the European Union for services, such as healthcare and education. ‍

Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004, and a current participant in the development of cross-border initiatives involving reimbursement of medical tourists, patient safety and quality issues, cooperation on regional healthcare, assessment of new medical technology and standards for e-health and transfer of patient information between member states. ‍

Government Support

Polys Georgiades, chairman of the Cyprus Health Service Promotion Board, urged Nicos Anastasiades , president of the internationally recognized Cypriot government, to assist and finance medical tourism. He said without aid, Cyprus stands to miss out on the economic benefits that medical tourism can provide to the country. ‍

“The state should meet its commitment and help the private sector both in the development of infrastructure and in boosting credibility for Cyprus internationally,” Georgiades told the Cyprus News Agency. ‍

One new local measure approved by the Health Ministry last year grants temporary licenses to doctors from third-party countries interested in providing treatments and performing operations on foreign patients in Cyprus that are not provided by Cypriot doctors on the island. ‍

Andreas Demetriou, director of the Cyprus Medical Association, said the plan will promote medical tourism to the island at a time when the EU free-movement directive will encourage more patients from nearby member states to seek healthcare beyond their national borders. ‍

Supporting Structures

The existence of supporting structures is of critical importance in the growth of medical tourism in Cyprus, which is home to six public hospitals, and more than 80 private facilities and clinics including Near East University Hospital , a member of the Medical Tourism Association and participant at the 2013 World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress, in Las Vegas. ‍

Think about post-operative care, said Coxon. What better place to recuperate from surgery for both patient and those people accompanying them — than in Cyprus where a Mediterranean climate that boasts dry summers and mild winters awaits. ‍

Cyprus also boasts about 2,250 doctors and 720 dentists with annual expenditures on healthcare totaling more than 700 million Euros, or 6 percent of the island's Gross National Product. ‍

One of the greatest assets, of which (Cyprus) can justifiably be proud, is that most of the island's physicians have trained at world-recognized medical schools, Demetriou told the Cyprus Mail . ‍

Demetriou noted that English is spoken widely throughout the island and by many medical professionals who have been trained in the United Kingdom and United States. ‍
