Russell Brand tour dates postponed as Met receives report of alleged sex assault

A performance of Brand’s tour due to go ahead on Tuesday at the Theatre Royal Windsor in Berkshire was postponed (Jonathan Brady/PA)

The remaining shows on Russell Brand’s Bipolarisation tour have been postponed as the Metropolitan Police said it has received a report of an alleged sexual assault in the wake of media allegations about the comedian and actor.

The 48-year-old has been accused of rape, assault and emotional abuse between 2006 and 2013, when he was at the height of his fame working for the BBC, Channel 4 and starring in Hollywood films.

Brand has strongly denied the allegations, which also include claims of controlling, abusive and predatory behaviour.

The Met Police said in a statement on Monday they had received an allegation of sexual assault in 2003.

The force said: “On Sunday September 17, the Met received a report of a sexual assault which was alleged to have taken place in Soho in central London in 2003.

“Officers are in contact with the woman and will be providing her with support.

“We first spoke with The Sunday Times on Saturday September 16 and have since made further approaches to The Sunday Times and Channel 4 to ensure that anyone who believes they have been the victim of a sexual offence is aware of how to report this to the police.”

The woman who has reported the alleged sexual assault had not spoken to The Sunday Times.

A performance of Brand’s tour scheduled for Tuesday at the Theatre Royal Windsor in Berkshire was postponed, with the show’s promoters saying in a statement shared by the theatre: “We are postponing these few remaining addiction charity fundraiser shows, we don’t like doing it – but we know you’ll understand.”

In a statement, the Windsor venue’s management said: “Theatre Royal Windsor will be offering ticket refunds in line with our terms and conditions of sale.”

Performances had been scheduled for two more venues this month – The Pavilions in Plymouth on Friday and The Civic At The Halls in Wolverhampton next Thursday.

Brand usually posts a new show on the video platform Rumble on weekdays at 5pm, but there was no new episode on Monday with his most recent appearance a short one on Friday when he denied the allegations against him which were published the following day.

A joint investigation by The Times, Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches includes allegations Brand assaulted one of the women when she was a 16-year-old schoolgirl and another woman has claimed he raped her against a wall in his home in Los Angeles.

In a now deleted YouTube video, Brand can be heard joking about raping a woman during a recording of Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast in 2013.

In the clip, published by the MailOnline, he told the audience: “It’s not my extremism that I need to protect, it’s my mundanity.

“I’m just a bloke from Essex, from a single-parent family, that is a pretty comprehensive show-off.”

After a pause, Brand added: “Oh, and also I raped someone once.

“I killed her after, she’ll never tell.”

The audience can be heard laughing, while Herring shakes his head and chuckles.

Before the first allegations were published, Brand posted a video on Friday saying he has been “promiscuous” but that all of his relationships have been “consensual”.

Russell Brand allegations

The BBC, Channel 4 and Banijay UK, which bought Endemol, the company commissioned by Channel 4 to produce the Big Brother spin-off shows Brand hosted, have all launched investigations into his behaviour while he was working on their programmes.

Downing Street urged the broadcasters to set out the results of their investigations into Brand “transparently”.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s official spokesman called the allegations “very serious and concerning” and said: “People should feel able to raise concerns where they have them and know they will be treated seriously and treated with sensitivity.”

He added: “The Prime Minister has been clear there should never be any space for harassment, regardless of where it is found.”

Channel 4 announced it has removed content featuring Brand from its streaming service while it looks into the claims and will remind production companies of its code of conduct.

“We are committed to ensuring our industry has safe, inclusive and professional working environments,” the broadcaster’s statement added.

It comes after Brand was accused of pursuing audience members for sex while presenting Big Brother spin-off shows EFourum and Big Brother’s Big Mouth on Channel 4.

Banijay UK, which bought Endemol in 2020, said it has launched an “urgent internal investigation” and encouraged “anybody who feels that they were affected by Brand’s behaviour” to come forward.

The BBC is facing questions after one of the women, who was 16 when she claims Brand began a relationship with her, alleged he used the corporation’s car service to pick her up from school to take her to his home.

BBC Broadcasting House

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour on Monday, the woman, known as Alice, said Brand’s denial was “laughable” and “insulting”.

She said: “It feels quite honestly surreal at the moment to see my story everywhere and even elements of my story on the front pages of publications that I hadn’t spoken to.

“And it feels like it was a long time in the coming.

“It’s the biggest open secret going – you don’t have to be an investigative journalist to have conversations with somebody who has an awful experience with him or somebody knows something.”

In 2020, the same woman contacted Brand’s literary agent at the time, who was also the co-founder of talent agency Tavistock Wood.

A spokesman for the agency said Brand “categorically and vehemently denied the allegations” at the time but they now believe they were “horribly misled” and have terminated all professional ties with the comedian.

Culture, Media and Sport Committee chairwoman Caroline Dinenage said the group will be looking for the same “reassurance” from the BBC which has been provided by Channel 4.

Ms Dinenage told BBC Radio 4’s PM programme the committee would be examining “who knew what and when, and the extent to which any reports that happened at the time were investigated”.

In a statement to the PA news agency Brand’s publisher, Bluebird, said that “all future publishing” with the comedian had been paused.

As Dispatches aired on Saturday Brand performed a sold out comedy gig at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre in north-west London as part of his Bipolarisation tour.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) told PA they do not have an open investigation into Brand, and another confirmed there have been no arrests following two allegations concerning claims that are said to have happened in the US.

Russell Brand ’s remaining live shows on his Bipolarisation tour have been postponed following allegations of sexual assault against the comedian .

Over the weekend, a joint investigation between Channel 4 ’s Dispatches , The Times and The Sunday Times revealed accusations from four women alleging Brand, 48, subjected them to sexual abuse, rape and emotional abuse on occasions between 2006 and 2013.

He has since vehemently denied these “very serious allegations”. The outlets have since reported that several more women have come forward with similar allegations, which are now being “rigorously checked”.

In light of these accusations, the final shows for Brand’s Bipolarisation tour have been postponed.

“We are postponing these few remaining addiction charity fundraiser shows, we don’t like doing it – but we know you’ll understand,” the tour’s promoters announced in a one-line statement.

Brand was scheduled to perform on Tuesday (19 September) at the Theatre Royal Windsor, with later dates in Wolverhampton and Plymouth.

The Theatre Royal said it will be “offering ticket refunds in line with our Terms & Conditions of sale”.

Russell Brand

The cancellation of the rest of his live shows comes as the Metropolitan police confirmed that officers are “in contact with” a woman who, on Sunday (17 September), made a report to the force about an alleged sexual assault that happened in Soho in 2003.

Brand’s publishing deal with Pan Macmillan’s imprint Bluebird has also been suspended.

Channel 4, meanwhile, has removed a number of TV episodes in which he starred, including a 2019 episode of The Great Celebrity Bake Off and the Big Brother box sets that he appeared on.

The programme has said that it is launching an internal enquiry into Brand’s alleged behaviour, encouraging “anyone who is aware of such behaviour to contact us directly”.

In his YouTube video, posted on Friday (15 September) ahead of the report and Dispatches documentary, Brand said that he was “very promiscuous” at the time of the alleged incidents, but claimed that “the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual”.

Details of Russell Brand's backstage behaviour at Dublin gig resurfaces as he faces sexual assault allegations

russell brand tour 2023 ireland

With all the allegations doing the rounds about Russell Brand, stories about his behaviour at a gig in Dublin in 2007 have started to circulate.

It might have been 15 years ago, but his 'shocking' behaviour left an indelible mark on some of the professionals who worked on the show, many of whom had years of experience working in the entertainment industry.

One security guard spoke to Life magazine in the Sunday Independent shortly after the show on the condition of anonymity, because he was astounded by what he had witnessed. He said he had never ever seen anything like it before in his entire career.

Russell Brand

He said: 'This guy [Brand] stands up on the stage and makes an announcement, saying "I am now going to come down into the crowd, pick about 12 girls," he said. "I’m going to ask you to come backstage — and the object is to shag you". He actually said all of this on stage. He then proceeded to go into the crowd and pick 12 girls, 10 of whom came backstage.'

Russell Brand denies 'serious criminal allegations' being made against him

He said he was left 'dumbfounded' when the star proceeded to walk into the room and pick one of them.

The veteran anonymous source thought he had seen it all in his career but this was the first time anyone was ever so blatant, and he couldn't believe that the women actually went along with it.

Russell Brand poses for photographs as he arrives to deliver The Reading Agency Lecture at The Institute of Education on November 25, 2014 in London, England

'Usually, girls would pretend they were just going back to a party and then something happened. But this guy actually told them straight out,' he said.

Around the time of the 2007 gig, Russell openly told The Guardian paper that he loved orgies. He explained that as his career took off he began to have 'loads of encounters' after gigs.

'As my sexual appetite grew, I found myself engaged in an increasingly desperate quest to satisfy it,' the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star said before adding that he became so open to the suggestion of having an orgy that he 'didn’t think twice' before accepting the invite.

He has never shied away from the fact that he was a sex addict and was 'highly promiscuous' back in the day, but that night in Dublin even stood out in his head.

In 2013, he told the Huffington Post that it was a memorable night, when he had nine orgasms in a short space of time. 'Once in Dublin, nine. It wasn’t even in a day, it was an evening. It was crazy there. What a mental night it was. I felt exhausted the next day.'

Russell Brand takes part in a discussion at Esquire Townhouse, Carlton House Terrace on October 14, 2017 in London, England

Four women have come forward to accuse Russell of sexual assault between 2006 and 2013. The accusations were made as part of a joint investigation by The Sunday Times and Channel 4's Dispatches programme.

Russell has vehemently denied all the allegations and insists all his relationships were consensual.

The BBC, Channel 4 and Banijay UK, which bought Endemol, the company commissioned by Channel 4 to produce the Big Brother spin-off shows Brand hosted, have all launched investigations into his behaviour while he was working on their programmes.

UK's Downing Street urged the broadcasters to set out the results of their investigations into Brand “transparently”.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s official spokesman called the allegations “very serious and concerning” and said: “People should feel able to raise concerns where they have them and know they will be treated seriously and treated with sensitivity.”

Russell Brand ’s scheduled tour shows appeared set to continue despite the comedian facing allegations of sexual assault and rape.

The 48-year-old comedian is scheduled to finish off the last three dates on his Bipolarisation tour in Windsor, Plymouth and Wolverhampton.

Despite his seemingly active work life, the star is being investigated by the BBC , Channel 4 and a production company after he was accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse while working for the organisations.

The high-profile actor has denied the claims, including of controlling, abusive and predatory behaviour, which have been made by four women relating to alleged incidents between 2006 and 2013 in the UK and US .

A joint investigation published over the weekend by The Times and The Sunday Times newspapers, alongside a TV documentary by Channel 4 Dispatches, revealed the allegations facing the star – who said on Friday night all of his relationships have been ‘consensual’.

Brand is listed to perform at Windsor’s Theatre Royal on Tuesday, September 19, Plymouth’s The Pavilions on September 22 and finally, Wolverhampton’s The Civic at the Halls on September 28.

Russell Brand.

There are no signs of cancellation and as it stands, posters for the star’s show remain live on the venues’ websites – with Windsor’s fixture being sold out.

On their website, the live show’s description reads: ‘Rules and rule breaking! Democracy and freedom!

‘We reach conclusions from mass confusion by polling the live audience. We want to hear YOUR opinion.

‘After amassing a movement of 25 million people across his digital channels, the Community festival and the live show Stay Free; the cultural and political commentator and award-winning British comedian is back on stage.’

As Dispatches aired on Saturday evening, Brand carried out his scheduled sold-out performance at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre in north-west London as part of tour.

During the show, he told audience members there were things he could not discuss after he arrived late to the theatre over the weekend.

He turned up in a black Mercedes 46 minutes late to the gig, which was due to start at 7pm but did not in fact begin until after 8pm.

The comedian’s former agency Tavistock Wood, commented on the allegations and said in a statement sent to Metro.co.uk: ‘Russell Brand categorically and vehemently denied the allegation made in 2020,  but we now believe we were horribly misled by him.

‘TW has terminated all professional ties to Brand.’

Metro.co.uk contacted each of the three remaining venues and Russell’s reps for comment.

The good news? One of the biggest comedians on the planet is coming to Cornwall for two outdoor shows. The bad news? Tickets for the performances by Russell Brand on the West Cornwall clifftop Minack Theatre have already sold out.

Brand's 33 tour of the UK is playing the usual large venues such as Newcastle City Hall, Brixton Academy and Plymouth Pavilions but on April 23 and 24 he'll be putting the world to rights at the more unusual granite-hewn theatre at Porthcurno .

33 - so named because Russell Brand believed he'd die at that age ... but didn't - is "a celebration of our return to freedom and a look at our shared, imposed insanity during the last two years".

The audience share their own mad stories from lockdown: “my dad got Covid and came round in person to tell us he had it”, “I farted in a Zoom yoga class - and I’m the teacher”, “I sold women’s knickers online to make money - I’m a bloke”.

Brand talks us through the low lows and still quite low highs of the pandemic - Tiger King, PE with Joe Wicks and, of course, Boris Johnson and those parties.

The show is in three parts - two comedic and one meditation (he's well into wellbeing now). There is a lot of politics, sociocultural analysis, chaos and laughter, but also at its core, Brand says this show carries a message of deep hope and love for the 'real people' of this country and provides a rallying call for systemic change.

He said: "The new show is a celebration of the last couple of years and what’s been revealed politically and spiritually. One, we learnt that you can change society radically overnight. Two, we realised that work wasn’t always necessary in the way we were told it had been and three, we can never ever trust our constantly partying government again and that we now have an opportunity for radical, personal and social change.

"We also learnt that from our audience surveys, that deep down everyone is crazy and some people will use knickers instead of a face mask at the slightest provocation."

It's no surprise that two relatively small shows by one of the world's best known comedians have sold out so quickly - it's akin to Ricky Gervais playing a Cornish leisure centre ... if we had any left. Your only hope is to contact the Minack to see if it gets any returns. Alternatively, you can see him over the border at Plymouth Pavilions on April 28 or Torquay's Princess Theatre on April 29.

Comedian Russell Brand’s tour postponed after sexual assault allegations

LONDON (AP) — British police said Monday that they had received a sexual assault allegation after media outlets published claims by several women against Russell Brand. Promoters postponed the remaining dates in a string of live gigs by the comedian, who denies the allegations.

A talent agency and a publisher also parted company with Brand over the claims, which have left the U.K. entertainment industry facing questions about whether the comedian’s bad behavior went unchallenged because of his fame.

Brand, 48, denies allegations of sexual assault made by four women in a Channel 4 television documentary and The Times and Sunday Times newspapers. The accusers, who have not been named, include one who said she was sexually assaulted during a relationship with him when she was 16. Another woman says Brand raped her in Los Angeles in 2012.

London’s Metropolitan Police force said that since the allegations were made public it had received “a report of a sexual assault which was alleged to have taken place in Soho in central London in 2003.” That is three years before the earliest of the alleged assaults reported by the media outlets.

The police force said “officers are in contact with the woman and will be providing her with support.” It did not identify the alleged perpetrator as Brand, but referred to the newspaper and TV allegations in its statement. Police urged “anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a sexual offence, no matter how long ago it was, to contact us.”

In a video statement released Friday in response to the media claims, Brand said that his relationships were “always consensual.”

The Times said Monday that more women had contacted the newspaper with allegations against Brand and they would be “rigorously checked.”

Max Blain, spokesman for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, said the claims were “very serious and concerning.” Conservative legislator Caroline Nokes, who chairs the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee, urged police in both Britain and the United States to investigate the “incredibly shocking” allegations.

“This merits and needs a criminal investigation, because for too long we have seen men – and the perpetrators of these sorts of crimes are almost invariably men – not being held to account for their behaviors and their actions,” she told BBC radio.

The claims have renewed debate about the “lad culture” that flourished in Britain in the 1990s and early 2000s, and the misogyny that still percolates on the internet.

The allegations reported by the newspapers and Channel 4 cover the period between 2006 and 2013, when Brand was a major star in Britain with a growing U.S. profile.

Known for his unbridled and risqué standup routines, he hosted shows on radio and television, wrote memoirs charting his battles with drugs and alcohol, appeared in several Hollywood movies and was briefly married to pop star Katy Perry between 2010 and 2012.

Brand was suspended by the BBC in 2008 for making lewd prank calls to “Fawlty Towers” actor Andrew Sachs in which he boasted about having sex with Sachs’ granddaughter. He quit his radio show in the wake of the incident, which drew thousands of complaints to the publicly funded broadcaster.

The BBC, Channel 4 and the production company behind the “Big Brother” reality series – spinoffs of which were hosted by Brand – all say they have launched investigations into Brand’s behavior and how complaints were handled.

Brand also has been dropped by talent agency Tavistock Wood, which said it had been “horribly misled” by him. Publisher Bluebird, an imprint of Pan Macmillan, said it had decided to “pause” future publishing with Brand.

Supporters of Brand asked why the allegations were being made years after the alleged incidents. The women said that they only felt ready to tell their stories after being approached by reporters, with some citing Brand’s newfound prominence as an online wellness influencer as a factor in their decision to speak.

Victims and the media also have to take account of Britain’s claimant-friendly libel laws, which put the burden of proof on those making allegations.

In recent years Brand has largely disappeared from mainstream media but has built up a large following online with videos mixing wellness and conspiracy theories. His YouTube channel, which has more than 6 million subscribers, has featured COVID-19 conspiracy theories, vaccine misinformation and interviews with controversial broadcasters including Tucker Carlson and Joe Rogan .

He also has continued to tour as a comedian, performing to hundreds of people in a London venue on Saturday evening as the Channel 4 documentary was broadcast. He had been due to perform Tuesday in Windsor, west of London, but promoters said the rest of the tour was being postponed.

Ellie Tomsett, a senior lecturer in media and communications at Birmingham City University who studies Britain’s standup circuit, said Brand was a product of a live comedy scene that was riddled with misogyny – and still is, despite progress made by women and others to diversify the comic landscape.

“When we’ve had a rise of popular feminism … we’ve also had a rise in popular misogyny epitomized by the likes of (social media influencer) Andrew Tate , but evident in all aspects of society, and definitely reflected on the U.K. comedy circuit,” Tomsett said.

“More and more things are springing up to try and counter this, but the idea that it’s something that happened in the past and doesn’t happen anymore is, quite frankly, nonsense,” she added.
