Most people will probably find that retro RVs look cool. And indeed, these days, anything from a couple of decades back is going to be an eye-catcher.

However, in our opinion, there is more to retro RVs than mere looks. For us, they are a reminder of the long, long path that RVs have passed in order to become what they are today.

Even a 10 years old RV is going to lag behind modern units in terms of comfort and efficiency, let alone RVs that are 20, 30, or even half a century old. But without them, without their downsides which needed a solution, we wouldn’t have what we have today.

To allow us to get acquainted with the old era (and for some to actually relive it), many RV manufacturers offer classic lines that pay homage to their predecessors. Looking vintage from outside, these RVs provide you with everything a modern RV has on the inside. Such RVs are the topic of today’s material – meet 12 retro campers that are actually new!

12 Vintage RVs That Are Actually New

Riverside retro travel trailer.

Riverside’s Retro travel trailers may not seem particularly retro by their design. There are many modern travel trailers that have the same body shape, and it doesn’t look the most vintage in the world. However, the body shape of this RV was actually been quite common in the 60s and 70s.

The body shape may not appear to be retro, but this RV’s color scheme and wheels do attach a strong retro vibe to it. This retro feel has been preserved inside as well thanks to the checkered flooring paired with the wood paneling and furniture.

Aside from functionality and the retro vibe, what is remarkable about the Retro line is that there are many floorplans to choose from it. They range from 13 feet 8 inches to 31 feet in length, so people can get either lightweight and compactness or comfort from the Retro line. And, in spite of giving a classical vibe, all the Retro floorplans are no less equipped than any other comparable modern travel trailer.

The smaller floorplans obviously only have the most basic amenities like some sleeping and kitchen space, while the larger models start to gradually add up things like sofas, dinettes, bathrooms, entertainment centers, or whatnot.

Of course, there is more room in the larger floorplans as well, albeit at the cost of increased weight and price. But Retro travel trailers don’t get that heavy – up to 5,675 pounds on average in the longest model, which is a surprisingly low number for a 31-foot travel trailer.

Scamp Travel Trailers

Happier Camper HC-1 Travel Trailer

The Happier Camper HC-1 travel trailer really doesn’t look that remarkable from the outside. It just looks like a generic travel trailer somewhere from the 1960s. But when you look inside, you realize that this is the most unique RV on our list.

The HC-1 offers “ultimate flexibility”, as Happier Camper writes, to its owners. The interior of this travel trailer has a modular design, which allows you to adapt it to your current needs. Need a dining area? The corresponding Happier Camper Adaptiv blocks would allow you to have it. Need just a large sleeping area? Again, it is easy to achieve with the Adaptive blocks.

As a small downside, you need to purchase some of the Adaptiv blocks yourself, which can add up to your costs quite significantly. Plus, you will have to assemble and disassemble the interior every time you need a change. On the other hand, you are basically getting multiple small travel trailers in a hull of one!

The HC-1 camper also is a very lightweight travel trailer, which is going to interest those people whose vehicles don’t have a high towing capacity. This travel trailer weighs just 1,100 pounds when empty. With add-ons and packages, it weighs 1,200 to 1,800 pounds on average, which is lighter than the vast majority of other RVs on this list.

With a length of only 13 feet, this travel trailer is also very compact. It can’t boast the freedom of movement of larger RVs, but what larger RVs can’t boast, on the other hand, is the modularity of the HC-1 camper. And for some people, the flexibility of the HC-1 camper is going to be worth more than the comfort of a longer travel trailer.

Airstream Sport Travel Trailer

Airstream doesn’t produce the cheapest RVs out there. Their high-end travel trailers , for example, cost as much as cheap class A motorhomes , so Airstream RVs definitely aren’t for those who are on a tight budget. Check our article on why Airstreams are so expensive for more information.

However, in terms of luxury, no cheaper RVs can compare with what Airstream has to offer.

When it comes to the design of the Sport travel trailer line , it is quite confusing. On one hand, you have a shape that definitely looks retro. Furthermore, the design of Airstream RVs is actually indeed retro since it has been used by Airstream since at least the 60s.

On the other hand, the Sport travel trailer’s material and color choice make it appear sleek, and sleek with retro is quite a weird combination. The metallic color gives a little bit of a raw appearance to this travel trailer as well.

So at first glance, you are getting a wide gamut of emotions and contradicting associations. This doesn’t make the Sport travel trailer look bad – on the contrary, we think that it is quite an eye-catcher.

Airstream travel trailers traditionally have a luxury vibe in them embodied in material choice. This vibe can be sensed in this travel trailer as well. Some people may argue that it doesn’t make the price tag of Airstream RVs worth it, but there will be people out there who will adore what they have to offer.

The Sport travel trailer line has two floorplans, which allows us to again pinpoint the key differences between them. Let’s begin with the larger 22FB floor plan.

Measuring 21 feet 8 inches in length, the 22FB floorplan offers better comfort for an extra $10k on top of the cheaper floorplan’s price tag. The most remarkable feature in this floorplan is the roomy bathroom that occupies the entire width of the RV’s rear. This bathroom definitely isn’t the biggest on the market, but it sure does have plenty of wiggle room to offer.

In the living area, there is likewise plenty of room for movement. The kitchen area also boasts 2 sinks, a larger 4.2 cubic feet refrigerator, a 2-burner cooktop, and a convection microwave oven.

The 16 feet 4-inch long 16RB floorplan offers basically the same amenities as its larger counterpart but in a more compact package. The kitchen area has only one sink and a smaller refrigerator, and the bathroom isn’t the same roomy one as in the 22FB. However, the 16RB floorplan still has the 4 sleeping spots that the 22FB had.

And not to extend our overview too much, we’ll say in conclusion that the Airstream Sport travel trailer line seems to be made for those who are looking for luxury in a smaller package.

Airstream International Signature Travel Trailer

And, needless to say, bigger size means more comfort indoors. The shortest floorplan in this series – the 23CB – is 23 feet long, so even the most minimalist package is going to have a lot of comfort to offer. And the 30 feet 11-inch models are the peak of comfort in this line.

There are 12 floorplans in the International Signature series. However, since the set of amenities offered by them is generally the same, it’s pretty easy to draw parallels and pinpoint differences between them.

Long story short, the main thing that differs between the floorplans in the International Signature line is the amount of free room and comfort you are getting inside. The price and storage requirements of the floorplans obviously go up the higher up the size you go, but those can be considered mere side effects of the increased comfort.

What stays unchanged in all the floorplans though is the number of sleeping spots. The models in this entire line have 6 sleeping spots. This definitely isn’t the most on the market, but that’s the most you are going to get from the RVs on this list.

You could again say that the International Signature line is overpriced and that you can get a comparable amount of comfort from a travel trailer that costs half the price. And you’d be right. However, we again assert that the classical Airstream design and luxury are key in these travel trailers.

Most people won’t even need what the International Signature offers, but since Airstream is making these models, there definitely are people out there who are ready to pay the money.

Airstream Classic Travel Trailer

The pricing of the Classic trailers may be completely unreasonable, and only a few people may actually go and get themselves an Airstream Classic RV. However, we nonetheless decided to include it in our list due to the wow effect it produces. The Classic travel trailer line really awakened the RV geeks in us.

From the outside, the Classic travel trailers are no different than their smaller Airstream counterparts. They still have that metallic body shape that gives a strong retro vibe. On the inside though, things are way different.

There are 4 floorplans in the Classic line – two 31-foot 3-inch floorplans and two 33-foot floorplans. There are many similarities between these floorplans, but the longer ones really have something to drop your jaw.

The 33-foot Classic floorplans have a truly enormous bathroom in the rear. It probably wouldn’t be a stretch to say that this is one of the biggest, if not the biggest bathrooms in any RV. Heck, it is even bigger than bathrooms in smaller residences! Aside from that, it even has a heated floor.

The 31 feet 3-inch floorplans have a more traditional RV bathroom. Instead, they have a roomier seating area in the front end of the RV.

Aside from the bathrooms, what also differs between the long and short floorplans is their entertainment area. The entertainment areas in the 33-foot RVs are equipped with 60-inch TVs, while the smaller floorplans can’t boast such a thing.

One crucial thing we didn’t mention is how luxurious the interior of the Classic travel trailers is. To put it short, the Classic travel trailer is a Maybach of travel trailers. Aside from that, the plentitude of wooden elements in it adds a little bit of a retro vibe to the inside.

In the end, no matter how ridiculous the Classic travel trailers may be, they are really a spectacle on the RV market.

Egg Camper Travel Trailer

If you’ve been into RVing for some time, then you’ve probably heard a word or two about the Egg Camper . While this travel trailer is no longer in production, it still remains a relevant model, and you may even be able to get one for yourself.

The Egg Camper arguably doesn’t look as retro as some other RVs on our list. We’d say that it is somewhere from the 70s or 80s, while there have been models on our list with a 60s vibe. Not everyone will like the latter, so the looks of the Egg Camper are perfectly alright.

To justify its name, this travel trailer has an egg-yoke yellow canopy, which also makes this travel trailer look cute.

Inside, this travel trailer is similar to other travel trailers of comparable size. However, the Egg Camper’s interior looks very plain and simple. To soften the frankly quite boring white color scheme, the Egg Camper has a couple of wooden elements in it. Doors, hatches, tabletops, and the like are made from wood to add a little more variety to the interior.

At a glance, the set of amenities in the Egg Camper is very similar to that of any travel trailer regardless of size. You have a bathroom, a kitchen, a dining area, and some sleeping space, just like in monsters like the Airstream Classic. Of course, the scale of things is much smaller in this travel trailer.

Lastly, measuring 17 feet in length, this is quite a compact travel trailer, so it won’t be providing its occupants with too much free room. On the other hand, with a weight of 2,000 pounds, it’s a more suitable choice for owners of less powerful towing vehicles.

Oliver Legacy Elite II Camper Trailer

On the outside, the Oliver Legacy Elite II camper trailer catches the eye with the already familiar retro design. What differs in this RV from most other RVs is the fiberglass hull. A rather pricey material, fiberglass is lighter and stronger than many metals used in RV construction.

On the inside, Oliver boasts a “luxurious interior with plenty of space” for its occupants. The Legacy Elite II camper trailer seems to be not as posh as Airstream RVs, but it definitely is far ahead of regular travel trailers.

Oliver offers 2 floorplans for the Legacy Elite II camper trailer. They are identical except for sleeping space arrangement – one floorplan has a full-size rear bed, while the other has a twin bed.

Both floorplans feature a roomy bathroom that occupies the entire width of the camper’s front, just like it was in the longer floorplan of the Airstream Sport travel trailer. The bathroom in the Legacy Elite II RV is a full bathroom with a sink, shower, toilet, and even a linen closet. What’s even better is that it has plenty of wiggle room inside.

Not only the bathroom is well-equipped in the Oliver Legacy Elite II camper trailer – it has got a wide gamut of appliances in the kitchen, an entertainment area with a 24-inch flat-screen TV and 4 speakers by default, and many other things to make your ride more fun and, more importantly, safer.

A thing that Oliver also boasts is that they sell their RVs directly to the buyer without any dealers in between. Those who’d like to work directly with manufacturers will most likely appreciate this approach.

Timberleaf Pika Travel Trailer

The Pika travel trailer by Timberleaf features a classic teardrop design, which has been and still is quite popular in smaller RVs. But in spite of its compact size, the Pika has a couple of features to boast nonetheless. In particular, the most remarkable thing in this travel trailer is its kitchen.

Timberleaf has decided to place the kitchen outdoors under the RV’s trunk. On one hand, this allows for more room inside, and on the other, you essentially get an outdoor kitchen in this travel trailer.

The kitchen in the Pika travel trailer has ample countertop room in, which is quite impressive for its size. As Timberleaf writes, this travel trailer has a 21 x 54-inch main countertop and a 10-inch deep upper countertop. The countertop room is arguably overkill for the RV’s size, though it, on the other hand, will allow for more convenience while cooking.

In terms of appliances, the kitchen isn’t that equipped by default – it just comes with a Dometic 35-liter refrigerator. So unless you will be bringing a portable cooktop with you, the stock Pika travel trailer probably won’t be good for longer trips.

Speaking of cooktops, Timberleaf has equipped the kitchen area with a couple of outlets to allow for appliance connection. There also are 4 USB ports in the kitchen’s electric panel, so you could, for example, listen to your favorite music from a laptop while preparing food.

Inside, the Pika travel trailer is essentially a bedroom. It has a 54 x 75-inch mattress with two sleeping spots, most importantly. Right above the head end of the mattress is a skylight – a nice addition that makes this RV feel more open, as well as allows the occupants to enjoy the night sky.

In terms of storage, the Pika RV is pretty nice as well. It has several mesh pockets scattered around, as well as a full-width cabinet above the bed’s foot end.

The Pika teardrop RV is also very lightweight when empty – it weighs just 970 pounds, which makes it the lightest RV on our list. Aside from that, it is just 11 feet 10 inches long, which makes it the most compact RV on the list as well. So those who have very limited towing and storage capacities will probably appreciate the lightness of the Pika.

Timberleaf Classic Teardrop Travel Trailer

The Timberleaf Classic Teardrop travel trailer is essentially a bigger Pika. This RV improves drastically on the main feature of the Pika trailer – the kitchen.

The kitchen area in the Classic Teardrop travel trailer is, first of all, noticeably roomier than in the Pika. It still has 2 countertops, but they are deeper and wider, allowing for more convenience while cooking.

Furthermore, the lower countertop is equipped with a sink and faucet, things that were absent in the Pika RV. Plus, Timberleaf offers an optional portable stove and a custom-made cooler to those who want to be able to make food without having to buy additional equipment.

Since the Classic Teardrop is larger than the Pika, it has more space inside. This allowed Timberleaf to equip it with a larger 57 x 80-inch bed, which is a little bigger than what the Pika has.

Otherwise, we’d say that the interiors of the two Timberleaf campers are very similar. The Classic Teardrop doesn’t have mesh pockets, but it does have the same window layout that the Pika has, as well as a storage cabin in the rear.

The Classic Teardrop travel trailer isn’t that big, but it definitely isn’t as compact and lightweight as the Pika. The Classic Teardrop measures 15 feet in length and weighs 1,400 pounds when empty, so it still is a very compact and lightweight RV.

All in all, the Timberleaf Classic Teardrop retains the character of Pika. Not only that, it makes it better and more comfortable for travel.

Modern campers are beautiful, but there is something about the charm of a vintage style and retro campers that continues to enchant the camping crowd. With both newer models and old style resale vintage campers available, we have found that many are confused about the options. Here is a simple guide to help you distinguish between vintage, retro style, and classic campers.

Vintage Campers

Vintage campers are campers that have stood the test of time. Typically built before 1990, “vintage” campers can be class C RVs, Class A coaches, or travel trailers. Occasionally you will find vintage truck campers as well.

To confuse things more, some late year newer retro style campers are named vintage, such as the Gulf Stream Vintage Cruiser , which brings us to our next category:

Retro-Style Campers

Retro usually refers to travel trailers that are modern in construction, but are styled to look vintage – typically from the 60’s. Many retro-style campers have fun, old-school design elements such as wings, red or vintage blue contrasting paint, and fun, mid-century interiors. Classic Camper

Classic refers to especially older RVs, mainly pull-behind travel trailers from the 50’s, 60s and 70s. Affectionately called “can ham” campers, many vintage travel trailers were tin boxes on heavy wooden frames. Many sellers fix up classic RVs with modern features, or outfit older school buses to keep a classic vibe with modern conveniences to earn the name “classic camper.” Here are some examples of classic campers for sale by their owners.

Should you consider buying a Vintage RV, a Classic Camper, or a new Retro-Style RV?

Here are some points to consider if you are thinking about investing in an older RV .

Purpose. Will you be travelling extensively? Older RVs will require much more maintenance and upkeep and may not be as road-worthy as their newer counterparts.
Are you handy? Older RVs will require constant work, and getting parts for the interior as well as engine can be a challenge.
Will you be staying at RV parks? Many places prohibit RVs older than 10 years to help keep a “fresh” look at the park.

If you answered yes to the above, you may want to consider a newer Retro Style Camper instead, to enable you to travel in style with the comforts of modern conveniences and lower maintenance. Whichever route you chose, be sure to have fun!

While modern RVs have more of the conveniences of home, there is nothing more adorable than a retro camper. Fortunately, there are many retro style travel trailers that are actually brand new. Here are the 10 best retro campers available today.

Airstream Classic

With an exterior design that has stayed the same since the 1930s, the Airstream Classic is a true retro-style camper. The Classic trailer features the famous riveted aluminum shell that is lightweight, strong and self-supporting.

While the exterior of this travel trailer maintains its classic design, the interior houses many modern features. These upgrades include a residential style kitchen and smart control technology that allows you to monitor and control your RV from a smartphone app.

Classic travel trailers are available in 30 and 33 foot-long models. Both floorplans include the option for twin beds if you want to sleep like classic TV couples.

Gulf Stream Vintage Cruiser

Designed to capture the vibe of the 1950s, the Gulf Stream Vintage Cruiser has adorable vintage style inside and out. The exterior is available with three different options: teal, crimson red or wood.

nuCamp Barefoot

The nuCamp Barefoot is undeniably one of the cutest retro campers on the market. The exterior is a curvy fiberglass body in a stunning sea glass color. Its vibrant, retro design will stand out and start lots of conversations at the campground.

Inside, the Barefoot travel trailer has everything you need, starting with a spacious U-shaped dinette with blue cushions that converts into a comfortable sleeping area. The galley kitchen features a refrigerator, a deep basin sink with a folding faucet and a butcher block countertop.

The wet bath comes with a cassette toilet and a retractable showerhead for indoor/outdoor use. Other notable features in this 17-foot RV include a three-bottle wine rack and push button cabinets.

Old School Trailers

Old School Trailers builds travel trailers with aluminum cage construction and retro-style exteriors. The exteriors are white with either teal or red stripes and matching painted rims.

The interior of these RVs also features several retro pieces. Vintage-style features include colorful dinette cushions, retro bedding and wood-paneled walls in the living area and bathroom.

Old School Trailers offers multiple floorplans, all of which are just under 22 feet long. All of the models include a dry bathroom and power awnings.

These campers are constructed from actual retro RVs, that are carefully restored with lots of brand new parts . For example, the Retro RV team swaps out the old, unreliable VW Kombi engines and replaces them with fuel injected, overhead cam Subaru engines.

The interiors feature a classic interior design with white cabinets, wood countertops and stainless steel appliances.

Riverside RV Retro

Another line of retro campers created to reflect the style of the 1950s, the Retro by Riverside is a vibrant, lightweight travel trailer. The exterior of the Riverside Retro features curved lines and bright paint.

The interior of the Retro stays true to the name with classic, black and white checkerboard flooring reminiscent of a 1950’s diner. Dinette cushions pop in aqua, red or seafoam green. Bright birch wood covers the interior walls and cabinetry.

Riverside makes several Retro models ranging from 16 to 28 feet long. All of the trailers have a full, dry bathroom.

The Dub Box

Best Retro Campers: Dub Box Adventure Camper

Another company that makes awesome retro campers is Dub Box. Amazingly cool retro caravans that can be painted in any color you choose, Dub Box Adventure Campers are the ultimate retro RVs.

While it looks like a retro van, the Dub Box is actually a towable travel trailer. Inside, the Adventure Camper includes a dinette that converts into a bed, a kitchen and a portable toilet. There is no shower inside, but there is an outdoor shower attachment.

These cool campers also include a pop-up top with weather curtains, so you can easily increase the headroom inside.

Ultimate Camper

Last, but not least on our list of the best retro campers is the Ultimate Camper. This adorable teardrop camper may truly be the ultimate retro trailer. The exterior comes in two options, one featuring a bright blue top with faux wood paneling below.

Inside the camper has more conveniences than you would expect to find in a teardrop trailer. These comfort features include a queen-size bed, a large dinette with a swiveling table, a galley kitchen and a large wet bath.

Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser Review – A Stunning Retro Camper

In this Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser review post we are going to take a look at one of the nicest retro-style campers Tammy and I have seen. This past weekend we were at the OKC Boat Show . The show has both boats and RVs. It’s here that we came across the Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser. Let’s get started with our review.

The Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser

When we saw the Vintage Cruiser Tammy and I immediately fell in love with this camper. What caught our eye was the exterior colors and shape design. Though we like the Winnebago Minne Drop which also has a similar shape, on this one the curves are not so drastic. This is especially true of the rear down-slope on the Gulfstream. To us, it just looks a little nicer and the style of a retro camper made us smile just a bit.

Let’s begin our review with the construction and exterior of the Vintage Cruiser.

Exterior construction.

The Vintage Cruiser uses a lightweight chassis built on a tubular six-sided aluminum frame. Six-sided means welded aluminum on the floor, roof, sidewalls, and front and rear walls. Some manufacturers still use wood to build their frames to keep costs down as aluminum is more expensive, but is also lighter, stronger, and more durable.

The roof of Vintage Cruiser is a one-piece fiberglass roof that extends to the front and the rear wall. The walls of this retro-camper are laminated fiberglass with an exterior layer of Azdel. If you don’t know what Azdel is you can learn more about it in this article I wrote about the benefits of Azdel for travel trailers .

Exterior Features

The Cruiser has several excellent exterior features and some exterior options you may want to consider. Here is a partial list:

Easy-lube axles
In-floor spare tire storage (under the bed)
Electric awning with LED lights (this is a required option)
Outdoor speakers (this is a required option)
Wide White-Wall radial tires (Option)
Power Tongue Jack which replaces the manual jack (option)

As you walk around the exterior you’ll find LED pass-through storage, hitch light, LED running lights, solar-ready and backup camera prep, 30-amp power, and a 30-foot cord with storage. One feature you will find not usually found on other campers is a TV mount on the exterior that accepts the TV mount unit you have inside. So you can easily un-mount your inside TV and hang it outside.

I also need to mention one additional exterior option. You can get the Vintage Cruiser with its exterior color in Crimson Red and Teal and Cream. The Teal and Cream was the color scheme that started it all.

But they also have The Estate Wagon also referred to as ” The Woodie” which a cream color with distinctive wood-grained graphics. Personally not my style but for some, it just might be what you are looking for.

The Vintage Cruiser is available in 12 floorplans. Our favorite floorplan is the Cruiser 19ERD. It checks several of the boxes on or wishlist such as dry bath , queen-size bed, and it is lightweight. Below is a table with specifications on all the other plans available.

Interior Construction

Let’s continue with our Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser review. In preparing for this Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser I reviewed just about everything Gulfstream has available on their site. They are very good at including Mattaport 3D walkthroughs of the interior of their campers and providing downloadable brochures.

The interior of the Vintage Cruiser is what initially attracted Tammy and me to this camper. Here is an interior photo of the 19ERD.

We immediately fell in love with the red and white color scheme and the wood cabinetry This camper exudes vintage. It kinda made us feel as though we were at a Johnny Rockets having lunch. But I digress, let’s continue our Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser review.

Unlike some small campers such as pop up campers this retro camper has a dry bath . A dry bath has always been one of our most important criteria in selecting a travel trailer so we were excited this one has it.

Another interior feature we liked that is on our criteria checklist is a queen bed. Two of the floor plans have regular-sized queen beds measuring 60″ x 80″, and several other plans have what is known as a short-queen measuring 60″ x 74″.

The floor is made of high-performance vinyl and the walls and ceiling are easy-care vinyl. It just means they are fairly easy to clean and maintain. The cabinets are fine-grained wood and they look beautiful.

Heating and Cooling

The Cruiser is equipped with a 20,000 BTU furnace, on the 17RWD the furnace is 16,000 BTU. There is a 6-gallon DSI water heater. What does not come standard is an A/C unit. To me, this should be standard on any travel trailer this size. It is not on this one so you have to buy it as an option. What’s available is a 13,500 BTU non-ducted A/C. Non-ducted usually means it is roof-mounted and it vents into the interior of your RV.

Electric and Power

When it comes to electric and power standard features the Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser has lots of them. Here is just a few of the many that are available:

In the Kitchen

In the kitchen area, you will find a two-burner cooktop with a cover and a stainless steel microwave. You get a color-coordinated 6 cubic-feet doubted door refrigerator. The countertops are cream-colored with self-edging. The dinette is vintage-styled and above the dinette is a vintage double trumpet dinette light.

Bathroom, Windows, and Doors

The bathroom has your standard foot-flush toilet and a high-velocity bath vent. The medicine cabinet is wood and has your standard mirror. For the shower, you have a radius or curved shower curtain and if you like you can get either a glass shower door or a soft-touch shower door as an option. The glass and soft-touch shower doors are only available on some models.

All the windows are black radius tinted which nice to have as it cuts down on summer heat. The front door is friction-hinged so it doesn’t slam when you close it. The pass-through storage doors have magnetic catches which are a nice detail feature.

Popular options on the Vintage Cruiser

Personally, I’m not a fan of travel trailers that have a lot of options. I think it should be built with premium features right from the start and we’ll decide if it’s worth the price. That is my only gripe with the Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser. There are options that we have to buy the should just be on a travel trailer. For example, the A/C unit is an option, sink covers, interior and exterior TV mounting bracket.

Summary of the Gulfstream Vintage Cruiser Review

Ok, folks, we’re not gonna lie. We “REALLY” like the Vintage Cruiser for many reasons. We love the look of the exterior and interior design. We like all the modern amenities. It seems Gulfstream has thought about just everything you need in a comfortable and stylish camper. I’m not a fan of having something as important as an A/C to be an option, but I can learn to live with that. It’ll just have to be an option I purchase.

Overall we think this Cruiser is an excellent retro-styled Rv which checks-off a lot of what is on our list of purchase requirements.

The 1950s spawned society’s view of kitchens as the heart of the home, a hub for gathering, cooking, eating and socializing. Thus, it makes perfect sense that the same decade could inspire today’s luxury kitchens.

“The deliberate playfulness and genius of the era’s designers have enabled the mid-century style to remain a classic design and one that still sparks joy,” said James Yarosh, an interior designer and gallerist in New Jersey.

That playful style spotlights details like colored cabinets, checkerboard and mosaic tile patterns, vintage lighting, and SMEG appliances—all of which are a conspicuous rejection of the sterile, monochrome kitchens that have defined luxury home design for years. One of the hottest brands to incorporate into retro-style kitchens, SMEG is turning up more these days. But the question is: How do you infuse a colorful refrigerator and other elements from this nostalgic era without creating a kitschy room?

“The key to a modern, fresh look in your kitchen is to reference, not imitate, signature looks of the 1950s,” said New York-based designer Andrew Suvalsky, who often laces retro style throughout the rooms he designs. He said using the period as inspiration will steer you away from imagining a garish space.

“When it comes to incorporating that retro-esque look, it’s a fine dance between looking beautiful and looking kitschy,” added Lisa Gilmore, a designer in Tampa, Florida. Gilmore suggested balancing contemporary pieces with vintage touches. That balance forges a functional yet attractive design that’s easy to live with while evoking a homey atmosphere––and ultimately, a room everyone wants to be in.

Color Reigns Supreme

Suvalsky said one way to avoid a kitschy appearance is to mingle woods and colors, such as lacquered base cabinets and walnut wall cabinets, as he did in his Montclair, New Jersey, kitchen.

“Mixing colors into your kitchen is most effective when it’s done by color-blocking––using a single color across large areas of a space––in this case, zones of cabinetry,” he explained. He tends to lean toward “Easter egg colors,” such as baby chick yellow and pale tangerine. These soft pastels can suggest a starting point for the design while lending that retro vibe. But other hues can spark a vintage feel as well.

“Shades of green and blue are a timeless base foundation that work for a 1950s vintage look,” said designer Jennifer Verruto of Blythe Interiors in San Diego. But wood isn’t off the table for her, either. “To embrace the character of a mid-century home, we like a Kodiak stain to enhance the gorgeous walnut grain,” she said. “This mid-tone wood is perfect for contrasting other lighter finishes in the kitchen for a Mid-Century Modern feel.”

Since color is subjective, a kitchen lined with white cabinetry can assume a retro aesthetic through accouterments and other materials, emanating that ’50s vibe.

“The fun of retro designs is that you can embrace color and create something that feels individual to the house and its homeowner, reflecting their tastes and personality,” Yaosh said. He recommended wallpaper as an option to transform a kitchen but suggested marrying the pattern with the bones of the house. “Wallpaper can create a mid-century or retro look with colors and hand-blocked craftsmanship,” he said. “Mauny wallpapers at Zuber are a particular favorite of mine.”

Suvalsky suggested Scalamandre wallpapers, for their 1950s patterns, and grass cloth, a textile that was often used during that decade. He also likes House of Hackney, a brand that “does a great job reinventing vintage prints in luscious colors,” he noted. “Many of their colorways invert the typical relationship between light and dark, with botanical prints in dark jewel tones set over light, more playful colors.”

Materials Matter

Beyond wall covering, flooring, countertops and backsplashes can all contribute to the 1950s theme. Manufactured laminate countertops, specifically Formica, were all the rage during the decade. But today’s high-end kitchens call for more luxurious materials and finishes.

“That’s a situation where going the quartz route is appropriate,” Gilmore said. “There are quartzes that are a through-body color and simple if someone is doing colored cabinetry. A simplified white without veining will go a long way.” She also recommended Pompei quartz Sunny Pearl, which has a speckled appearance.

But for those who welcome vibrant color schemes, countertops can make a bold statement in a vintage kitchen. Gilmore said solid surface materials from the era were often a color, and quartz can replicate the look.

“Some brands have colored quartz, like red,” she said. But keeping countertops neutral allows you to get creative with the backsplash. “I‘d pull in a terrazzo backsplash or a bold color like a subway tile in a beautiful shade of green or blush,” Gilmore said. “Make the backsplash a piece of art.”

Suvalsky also leans toward bright and daring––such as checkerboards––for the backsplash. But depending on the kitchen’s design, he’ll go quieter with a double white herringbone [tile] pattern. “Either version works, but it must complement other choices, bold or simple, in the design,” he explained.

Likewise, his flooring choice almost always draws attention. “My tendency is more toward very bold, such as a heavily veined marble or a pattern with highly contrasting tones,” he noted. Yarosh suggested slate and terrazzo as flooring, as these materials can make an excellent backdrop for layering.

Forge a Statement With Vintage Appliances

As consequential as a kitchen’s foundation is, so are the appliances and accouterments. While stainless steel complements contemporary kitchens, homeowners can push the design envelope with companies like SMEG when making appliance selections for a retro-style kitchen. Although Suvalsky has yet to specify a SMEG fridge, he is looking forward to the project when he can.

“I think they work best when the selected color is referenced in other parts of the kitchen, which helps to integrate these otherwise ‘look at me’ pieces into the broader design,” he noted. “They are like sculptures unto themselves.”

“For our mid-century-inspired projects, we’ve opted for Big Chill and the GE Cafe Series to bring a vintage look,” Verruto added. Similar to SMEG, Big Chill and GE offer a vintage vibe in a wide selection of colors and finishes, alongside 21st-century performance.

Can’t commit to a full-size appliance? Sometimes, a splash is enough. Gilmore tends to dust her retro kitchens with a colored kettle or toaster since her clients are likelier to add a tinge with a countertop appliance or two. “Mint green accessories make it pop, and if in five years they are over it, it’s not a commitment,” she said. “It’s a great way to infuse fun and color without taking a major risk.”

Kitchen dining areas present the opportunity to introduce retro lighting, furniture, and accessories to complete the look. Flea markets and antique markets are excellent places to hunt for accompaniments.

“Dome pendants and Sputnik chandeliers are iconic styles that will infuse vintage charm into your kitchen while also easily complementing a variety of other styles,” Verruto said.

Suspend a vintage light fixture over the classic Saarinen table, and you can’t go wrong.

“Saarinen Tulip Tables are almost always guaranteed to deliver a home run in nearly any interior, especially a 1950s-themed kitchen,” Suvalsky said. “The simplicity of its form, especially in white, makes it nearly impossible to clash with.”

To really channel the vibe of this era, Verruto suggested local vintage stores and brands such as Drexel Heritage and Lexington. Dressing the windows counts, too. “Cafe curtains in a chintz pattern will make for a fabulous finishing touch,” she said.

Meanwhile, Yarosh delights in selecting tabletop items, including novelty stemware and other trappings ubiquitous in the 1950s. “Mid-century kitchens also need to have pedestal cake plates and maybe a cloche to keep a cake,” he mused. “I love the opportunity to curate these details down to the correct fork and serving pieces.”
