Kenny Chesney Details 2019 Songs for the Saints Tour

By Jon Freeman

Jon Freeman

Kenny Chesney ‘s 2018 touring season was packed with stadiums and amphitheaters alike, including massive venues like AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. For his 2019 Songs for the Saints Tour, Chesney will take a slightly different tack and stick predominantly to smaller venues — for Chesney, anyway — in early spring.

Launching April 4th at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky, the Songs for the Saints Tour at present consists of 18 dates stretching through the end of May. Stops along the way include the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City and the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which he previously played in 2017. The Tuscaloosa show, dated May 25th, is the last one on the itinerary at present.

The upcoming tour takes its name from Chesney’s 2018 album , containing the hit “Get Along” and the current single “Better Boat,” featuring singer-songwriter Mindy Smith. Many of its songs were inspired by Chesney’s experiences in the Caribbean and the resilience of people rebuilding in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

On Wednesday, Chesney was given the CMA Award for Musical Event of the Year for “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” his collaboration with David Lee Murphy that appears on Murphy’s No Zip Code LP, which Chesney co-produced. The two were slated to perform the song during the telecast, but Chesney was forced to bow out due to a death in his family.

Country superstar Kenny Chesney may have missed the ACM Awards this past weekend, but he had a good excuse. Chesney was playing back-to-back shows at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan in support of his Songs of the Saints Tour. And from what we know about these performances and tour in general, fans were very grateful for their chance to see the singer live.

“Something about this town, something about this arena, there’s a certain energy,” Chesney gushed to a crowd of 12,000 during his sold-out show at Van Andel Arena, the first of two straight nights in Grand Rapids. “You’re proof that music brings people together more than anything we have in life.” Surprisingly, this tour will take Chesney to smaller venues so he can get more intimate interactions with his fans, which is hard to imagine with sold-out shows boasting thousands of fans.

For those of you still making your way to one of Chesney's shows this trek, here are some highlights to get you even more excited!

The Setlist:

On average the setlist has remained the same, consisting of 24 tracks that feature songs from all throughout his extensive career. Chesney sings hits such as “Beer in Mexico,” “Summertime,” “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem” and “I Go Back.”

Check out the setlist from his first night at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The Openers:

Opening for the country star is multi-instrumentalist Caroline Jones and “the king of hillbilly rock” David Lee Murphy , as Chesney dubbed him. Chesney brought Jones back on stage to sing his 2010 duet, “You and Tequila" as well as Murphy's song "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" with Murphy.

The Covers:

The only cover is Murphy's song "Everything's Gonna Be Alright."

The Encore:

There is generally a 2-song encore that features "Anything but Mine" and the ultimate closer "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy."

The Songs for the Saints Tour continues through the end of May. The trek is slated to end May 25 at the Bayou Country Superfest, but here's hoping for extended tour dates!

Kenny Chesney wraps rehearsals for “Songs for the Saints 2019 Tour”

kc

Kenny Chesney , the eight-time Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year, wrapped rehearsals for his  Songs for the Saints 2019 Tour – and watched as the breakdown and loadout began. Having once again played to well over a million people in 2018 – topping the million mark in Boston alone after his 18th show at Foxborough’s storied Gillette Stadium – the East Tennessee songwriter/superstar made the decision to take the music to the fans living in markets where stadium shows are not always an option.

“Growing up outside of Knoxville, I remember the tours that didn’t come near us,” Chesney says. “You’d hear about them, read about them – and even dream about them. But if it wasn’t playing the Knoxville Civic, well, it wasn’t something we could get to.”

With a focus on arena plays – and a few festivals where he has history – the man the  Los Angeles Times  called “The People’s Superstar” is scaling his massive stadium-sized shows back to bring them inside. Just don’t expect the setlist or the energy to shrink.

“One of the things I wanted to make sure,” allows the man who’s the only country act in  Billboard ’s Top 10 Touring Acts of the Last 25 Years, “is that even if we’re in a more contained space, the No Shoes Nation is going to get the same impact, the same energy, the same feeling that the people coming to the stadiums experience. It’s obviously a different show; we couldn’t begin to get all that production into an arena, but I promise it’s going to be a whole lot of fun and music.”

Known for the high intensity of his concerts – the  Wall Street Journal  deemed him “The King of the Road” after a record-setting AT&T Stadium show – that connection live is everything. As he says each night onstage, “Whatever your problems, whether it’s work or your boyfriend or anything else, I want you to leave them out there… and just be inside this music. I want you to feel that, and forget about everything else.”

Joining Chesney for the  Songs for the Saints 2019 Tour are David Lee Murphy, his duet partner on the No. 1 hit and CMA Vocal Event of the Year “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” and Caroline Jones. With a spirit of friendship, discovery and celebration, in many ways this more intimate tour continues the intention of his charitable  Songs for the Saints  album, which featured Ziggy Marley, Mindy Smith and Jimmy Buffett.

“Music is medicine,” Chesney says. “It heals people and defines who we are. But it’s so much more: it brings us together and reminds us how precious life is. When I was making  Songs for the Saints , how I saw music and what it does changed. No Shoes Nation has always been one of the most passionate ‘places’ in the world, but I realized these songs, which mark people’s lives, also lift us up in ways that give us strength, community and a whole lot of joy. It’s a party, but it’s also a whole lot more.

“I can’t wait to get out there and get to some of these places we’ve not been in a while. Get ready! We’re coming.”

The Songs for the Saints Tour is presented by Blue Chair Bay Rum. Drink Responsibly.

Kenny Chesney adds 2019 tour dates

Taking the Music to the Fans with More Cities + Venues

Focusing on smaller venues and markets not directly impacted by his massive stadium tours, Kenny Chesney sought to make his Songs for the Saints 2019 Tour mirror the intimacy of its namesake album. Inspired by the resilience of the people around him, Chesney doubles down on the human connection for his 2019 tour by seeking those members of No Shoes Nation who have spent the past decade and a half making the trip to stadium markets for what is now a summer tradition.

“No Shoes Nation rocked me so hard last summer,” Chesney says of his record-shattering Trip Around the Sun Tour, “and they reminded me how much more these songs become when you play them for the people who live inside them every day. I love everything about the members of No Shoes Nation, so to change things up, I thought, ‘Why not bring the music to them?’”

The songwriter/superstar from East Tennessee whom Variety called, “Country music’s only true long-term stadium act” and The Wall Street Journal deemed, “The King of the Road” announced 11 arenas in what, for an artist who does 18, 19, 20+ stadiums a year, might seem like outlying markets. With the response being so strong, he adds another half-dozen cities beyond the obvious to his Songs for the Saints 2019 Tour.

“We have played the stadium in Louisville several times, but in really looking at this notion, I wanted to give them something more intimate,” Chesney explains. “This tour is going to really feel like a club show – and put the music front and center. It’s why we’re going to Oklahoma City, Albany, Lincoln and Jacksonville next year. Go to No Shoes Nation, and bring them the songs where they live.”

Setting and often breaking his own records with 2018’s Trip Around the Sun Tour – including over a million fans at Foxborough’s Gillette Stadium and becoming the single biggest-seller at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium – the eight-time Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year took his time deciding how he wanted his 2019 tour to roll out. Having merged amphitheaters with 19 stadiums, it was a block buster year. Rather than do more of the same, Chesney decided to do something totally out of the box.

“We know how to do stadiums, and we love the rush of those shows,” allows the man who just notched his 30th No. 1. “But you never want to get to where you take it for granted, or you’re so used to it, it’s just what you do. There’s a real intimacy even in arenas that you don’t have in a stadium, and it’s something we’ve not had for a while. To me, it’s a whole other canvas for us – and I’m psyched about it.”

Kicking off April 4th at Louisville’s KFC Yum! Center, the tour will move aggressively through May. Designed for markets that may not have stadiums, but still have lots of heart, Songs for the Saints 2019 Tour reflects the personal sentiment that defines the album of the same name. More dates are expected to be announced.

Kenny Chesney will bring Dan + Shay, Old Dominion and Carly Pearce on 2022 tour

kenny chesney tour 2019 opening acts

After two years of postponements, Kenny Chesney will finally return to stadium stages next April — and he'll reward the patience of his "No Shoes Nation" with a stacked roster of opening acts.

The country star has just announced the special guests for his "Here And Now" 2022 stadium tour, which has a stop at Nashville's Nissan Stadium on May 28.

The group includes country duo Dan + Shay, who are currently headlining arenas on the heels of their new album "Good Things." Also along for the ride is multi-CMA/ACM winning country band Old Dominion and Carly Pearce, who's in the midst of an artistic breakthrough with her highly personal album "29."

Chesney originally planned to hit the road in 2020 in the wake of his latest album, "Here and Now." The pandemic forced him to originally postpone the stadium tour to 2021.

This past March, he pushed his tour plans back to 2022, citing "varying local statutes and practices and social distancing" that "would mean that a good percentage of people would not be able to come to the show(s)."

In that time, Chesney's performance plans evolved, too. He's promised "a completely new show" with a "new lineup, lots of new music and plenty of the songs people come to hear."

The tour kicks off April 23 at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium, and closes with a two-night stand at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. on August 26 and 27.

Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban Burn It Up at Arizona Stadium Concert

kenny chesney tour 2019 opening acts

PHOENIX -- With a bigger setup than ever, Kenny Chesney rose to the occasion Saturday night (May 31) with a huge, feel-good summer show aimed at lucky listeners in the "sandbox" as well as enthusiastic country fans wayyyyy in the back of the University of Phoenix Stadium. You know you're a big deal when Keith Urban is your opening act, preceded by Sammy Hagar and Gary Allan.

Now that he's winning entertainer of the year trophies, like the fan-voted one from the Academy of Country Music a few weeks ago, Chesney probably feels the heat to stay at the top of his game. Luckily, there really wasn't much heat to be felt at this show since the retractable roof of the stadium didn't open until just before his set. Besides giving the music a little bit of room to breathe, it also provided a moment of reflection: This guy is playing stadiums . Few acts are doing that these days.

It's been a few years since I've been to a Chesney stadium show, but I noticed a few additions. He's got a horn section now, and the catwalk seems to get bigger and longer every year. I wouldn't be surprised to see it extend all the way to the rafters next time. My seats were in the second row, directly in front of the speakers -- and not the stage, unfortunately -- so I retreated to the middle of the venue to get a better view. And thank goodness, because -- with the possible exception of Brad Paisley -- nobody provides a better visual component to their shows. The lighting is excellent and the digital graphics are extraordinary, with tropical flowers and hula dancers gliding across the orange and turquoise landscape. I wish I could use that as my screensaver.

All of this would be mostly meaningless if the songs weren't there, and I especially enjoyed hearing live versions of his newer hits, like "Never Wanted Nothing More" and "Better as a Memory," along with an encore of "Anything but Mine." Uncle Kracker showed up to sing a few lines of "When the Sun Goes Down" and "Follow Me," but mostly he pointed the microphone at the audience. Meanwhile, Chesney never seems to get winded. This is hard to describe, but he kind of sings with his whole face, like that expressive uncle who always has a good story to share and makes sure you're listening closely. And Chesney rarely stands still, constantly running up and down the catwalk, stopping occasionally to blow kisses to the nosebleed section.

One thing, though: Why is he always looking over his shoulder? Maybe it's a silent code for a sound glitch or something, but in the middle of his set, he was constantly throwing his head back for a quick second, like he was making sure the drummer was actually sitting there. Maybe he was doing that all night and I just didn't notice until halfway through. It's a small distraction, but when a singer's face is plastered on an enormous digital screen, even the cheap seats notice things like that. Maybe I'll chalk it up to the fact that nearly all of his songs are about looking back, in a nostalgic sense.

Keith Urban doesn't use all those tricks, but he brings one super-cool component -- a ridiculously gigantic screen with the crispest picture imaginable. Even way across the football field, it felt like you were watching a flat-panel in somebody's basement. He also employs a first-rate lighting technician and is supported by one of the most talented road bands in country music. He knows it, too, giving them a chance to step into the spotlight with a few verses. You can tell he loves the camaraderie, and nobody looks like they're having more fun at a Keith Urban concert than Keith Urban himself.

I was hoping he'd unveil some new music, but I was satisfied with all the hits -- such as "I Told You So," a stripped-down "Better Half" and a solo acoustic version of "Raining on Sunday." I also appreciate the fact that he doesn't beg the audience for applause. I'm OK with one, "How y'all doin', PHOENIX!!!" But his talent stands on its own, without any cheesy banter. All he could have said was, "So, I'm expecting a baby pretty soon," and we all would have screamed. Cheers to restraint.

Dressed casually in a Rolling Stones T-shirt and jeans, Urban wasn't acting like a superstar. A few times, he'd catch a glimpse of the stadium seats, with thousands of fans looking back at him, and giggle a little bit, shaking his head in disbelief. Although he's now more famous than ever, I still consider him more of a musician than a celebrity. Truly, few people in Nashville have more talent, and if you've never seen him live, I'd recommend it. After his set, my friend said, "Makes me want to practice guitar." To which I replied, "Either that, or give it up forever."

Earlier in the afternoon, I watched Hagar on the closed-circuit TV while waiting for a pizza (45-minute line). Same with Allan while in line for a bottle of water (45 minutes). The venue apparently didn't know that a Chesney/Urban double bill would be a huge draw. They put the beer stands directly opposite from the concession stands, and those intertwined lines blocked the concourse for the bathrooms -- and only about half the bathrooms were open. Every $4 bottle of water was poured into a cup, which meant the lines took forever, not to mention double the amount of plastic going into the trash. Same thing for the Corona beer, the tour sponsor, and you needed a blue wristband to go onto the field to get one, anyway. Poor planning like this makes a long day even longer.

Luckily, Kenny Chesney's concert creed is simple: "Forget your problems. Enjoy the music." So that's exactly what I did.

Dierks Bentley

Though he’s been off tour for less than two weeks, Dierks Bentley is ready to hit the road again.

In January, Bentley’s 2019 Burning Man outing will take the three-time CMA nominee on a 24-date arena swing through Canada, the midwest and the south, including a hometown date at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

Jon Pardi and Tenille Townes will fill the opening slots on the Live Nation-promoted tour. The Hot Country Knights, Bentley’s ‘90s country cover band, will warm up the crowd every night. Ticket sales begin Nov. 2.

In an exclusive interview, Bentley told Billboard what fans can expect on the tour, which is named after his current single featuring the Brothers Osborne.

Billboard: This past tour included so many highlights, including selling out Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl for the first time, as well as mounting your own festival. How will you top it?

Dierks Bentley:  It’s kind of hard to comprehend because so many big things happened, in particular ending the show at the Hollywood Bowl, selling it out and then having Dwight Yoakam on stage with me. His was really the first country show I saw, so closing out the Hollywood Bowl together was really a surreal experience. I’m still on a high. I’m always saying I’m one who sips tequila instead of shoots it, it’s a nice drawn out buzz. I don’t know how we top that. But I think the goal is don’t hold anything back, every year put all you have into production, all you have into ideas, don’t save anything. You put everything you have in every year and it forces us to find a way to top it the next year.

You’re still touring behind your current album,  The Mountain. How do you make the  Burning Man outing different since there’s not a new album to promote?

Dierks Bentley on His Colorado-Inspired Album 'The Mountain': 'I'm Trying to Dig a Layer Deeper'

Why Jon and Tenille?

This will be [Jon and my]  third and final time to tour together. It’s his first time being in the middle slot that has the longer set. He’s going to blast off and do his own thing in 2019, but we’ll get him through the first half. He just brings so much energy and joy backstage, off stage, and that’s so important to me to be out there with people that fans can genuinely tell I enjoy being with. With Tenille, I wanted to go a different route and try something new and find some fresh energy. There’s so many people headlining and there are a lot of people— it’s kind of the same group— the only way to break out and expand the group of people on the road is to grab someone new and throw them out there on our stage and watch them do what they do. I’ve listened to her music and love her voice and think she’s super talented and I was a big fan of her singles.

With females having such a tough time at country radio, how important was it for you to give a female a slot?

The fact that she’s a new female artist, personally for me, really excites me. We need some more women in our format and if I can play a small role in shining a light on one of those folks, it makes me feel very lucky to be able to do that. Regardless of all that, she’s super talented and I’m excited to have that energy out there on the road with me and Jon, we could use that. It will be a very different feel for us backstage, but I pride myself on showing new artists how headliners should act and behave and hopefully spoil them so that when they go out after me, they always say they had the best experience with us.

For me, Kenny [Chesney] was the one and is the one. There are other acts who don’t give their opening acts time to sound check, which for me is just a given. Kenny was the one that really set the bar for the industry. He really showed you what the road should feel like and made everybody feel important. We make yearbooks every year and I stole that straight from Kenny. Not everyone’s like that—I’ve been on tours that have been kind of miserable— but Kenny’s the one I learned from and tried to emulate.

Who made you miserable?

I’m not [saying.] George Strait is awesome, just being around him is incredible. Kenny’s the one that really actively made sure you had a great experience on the road. That’s what I want for these guys. I want them to have the best time they’ve ever had on the road. More importantly, for the fans, I want these guys and girls to have all the tools at their disposal, whether it’s lights, production, sound, and time to sound check so they can go on stage and put on the best show possible for our fans. Positive vibes all around.

How will you do “Burning Man” since the Brothers Osborne will no longer be out with you as they were this summer?

I know. That’s one of the first questions that comes up and one of the bigger bummers too. How can we be creative with it now? I have Jon Pardi, I have Tenille Townes. Maybe I don’t do it with anybody and it’s just me. That’s the way I originally cut it. I don’t know, we’ve got to figure it out.

This will be an arena tour. Do you have a preference between amphitheaters and arenas?

Variety is what makes it great. You do enough amphitheaters, you go, “Man, it would be fun to do arenas.” You do enough arenas and you’re like, “Man, it would be great to get back outdoors again.” I’m in the mood for arenas. After playing Madison Square Garden and seeing how the show feels inside, it’s exciting. The energy is just so different because everybody’s contained and focused. People always ask, “what’s your favorite place to play” or “your best memory from the road” and it’s always what the last show is. My favorite place to play is where I’m playing.

Kenny Chesney to Embark on Nostalgic I Go Back 2023 Tour with Kelsea Ballerini — See the Dates!

Kicking off in March, the tour will see Chesney play shows for fans "who might not come to stadium shows, who live a little off the obvious path, but who love this music every bit as much..."

Kenny Chesney is going back to his roots.

Shortly after his massive Here and Now 2022 Tour wrapped in August, the country superstar announced on Monday that he's embarking on the I Go Back Tour with opening act Kelsea Ballerini next year, which will see Chesney hit cities outside of major markets — and many that he hasn't played since his rise to fame.

Launching March 25 at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pennsylvania, the I Go Back Tour will feature shows in North American locations including Lexington, Kentucky, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma before wrapping July 22 at the Hy-Vee Indy Race in Des Moines, Iowa — with more dates set to be added.

Chesney, 54, opened up about the tour's inspiration in a press release, telling fans that he was thinking about how to "recapture the magic" after concluding the Here and Now Tour.

"I still have the sounds of diesel engines and No Shoes Nation in my head — and that made me ask, 'What else could I do? What would be something that would put me every bit as much in the music and give No Shoes Nation another reason to believe?'" he stated, noting that he wants to play for fans "who might not come to stadium shows, who live a little off the obvious path, but who love this music every bit as much..."

The thought led the 12-time CMA Award-winner to think about his 2004 hit single "I Go Back," written about how music can remind you of important life moments.

"That song is about holding all those things that shaped you very close, recognizing how special they are – and keeping them alive any way you can," he continued. "So, I decided that rather than just go repeat what we did, I wanted to take this band and these songs to a lot of the cities we played on our way up! Let's call the tour I Go Back – and do just that."

Elsewhere in the press release, Chesney recalled playing some of the cities during the early years of his career, noting the "craziness" of the shows in "markets where people were using chain-cutters to get onto the lawn because we were so sold out in the Carolinas."

"That's a kind of energy that should never be left behind. For all those fans — based on how good last year felt — I want to bring what was coming off that stage to you, where you are, so we can all have that kind of experience together!" added Chesney.

Fans can expect to see the musician perform songs from his catalog that "time stamp people's lives" and "serve as the touchstone for memories in the making."

He said in the statement, "For people to come out and either live these songs again, or hear them for the first time? Who knows what will happen? But I know whether it's 'American Kids,' 'Get Along' or 'You And Tequila,' every single person knows exactly what we're singing about and singing along to together."

In another press release, Chesney spoke about choosing Ballerini, 29, as the tour's opening act following their 2020 duet "Half of My Hometown."

"Kelsea understands everything about where I come from, because she's from there, too," said the musician, referencing the fact that both he and Ballerini grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee.

"She knows how hard it is to leave, how much you miss all those things that make you who you are... but also how the only way to chase the kind of dream she has is to do just that. It's a tough call when you love home the way we both do, but for kids like us, there was never really a choice," added Chesney.

He then recalled the origin of "Half of My Hometown," noting that Ballerini texted him to record the duet: "As soon as I heard that first verse, I was in. And I have been one of Kelsea's biggest fans ever since. She's a writer, a girl who sings from her heart and isn't afraid to honor where she comes from. To me, there was no other choice for this tour."

Ballerini also spoke about collaborating with Chesney on both the song and tour in the press release, acknowledging their hometown connection.

"Music has taken me so many incredible places," she said, noting that she's collaborated across genres. "But singing with Kenny is going home. He was the only voice I heard on 'half of my hometown,' and when he comes in, it's just like hitting the Knoxville city limits. So to be able to go out to those cities like the place he and I grew up with an artist who's accomplished what he has, it's a lot like going home."

Tickets for the I Go Back Tour go on presale for American Express card members in select markets from Nov. 23 at 10 a.m. local time through Dec. 1 at 10 p.m. local time. The general public gains access to tickets the following day at 10 a.m. local time.

Kenny Chesney’s 2015 Big Revival Tour Opening Acts Ready to Hit the Road

As  Kenny Chesney  nears the start of his 2015 The Big Revival Tour , his opening acts are prepping to hit the road.

Chesney will be joined at various points throughout the tour by  Old Dominion ,  Jason Aldean ,  Eric Church ,  Jake Owen ,  Brantley Gilbert  and  Chase Rice , the latter of whom says that he hopes to gain some listeners of his own from Chesney's legion of loyal fans.

“There are only a few entertainers that continuously set the bar both musically and on stage, and Kenny has always been that guy for me," Rice says. "The fact that we’re going out on tour with him this year is still surreal. It's a huge opportunity not only to share the same stage, but also play to a lot of people who may not have seen me live before, who wonder what I'm all about."

Old Dominion's newest single " Break Up With Him " is making waves on country radio, and the band is excited to start playing for bigger audiences.

“It’s already been a wild year, and we haven't even really started yet,” says frontman Matt Ramsey. “Our fans are incredible ... We can really feel that fan base growing at every show, and we are having fun trying out some new material on them as we are picking songs for a full album. Add to that our new deal with RCA and touring with Kenny Chesney all summer -- it really feels like big things are coming!"

Adds bassist Geoff Spring, "We’re excited to learn, just like we are every time we open for another artist ... We want to figure out what works for them, what makes them successful, and try to learn from it, so I don’t think this will be any different. I’m sure we’ll be side stage most nights, trying to figure out what all these different artists are doing to capture the attention of the audience, and then it kind of integrates in."

The 2015 The Big Revival Tour kicks off with two sold-out shows  on March 26 and 27 at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. A full list of dates, along with ticket information, is available at  KennyChesney.com .
