Seal spotting.

Whilst I was staying in the Titchmarsh Marina with my sister on a yacht, we decided to book for Tony's Wildlife Boat Trips which depart from the Marina at the time which is right for the tide/depth of water. The trip takes about 2 hours round the backwaters of Walton. Tony, our guide and master of the vessel is brilliant, highly knowledgeable of all varieties of wildlife in the area. We saw seals and many varieties of birds - you would benefit from having some good binoculars (Tony has some on board for people to use) Our trip was undertaken in reasonable conditions. The boat takes14 people, and is open to the elements, but a cover can be used if necessary. There are lifejackets on board. Great experience for all.

What a fantastic and relaxing way to spend a couple of hours and so close to home. Tony was a knowledgeable and entertaining guide who was mindful of the impact of visitors on wildlife, emphasising the importance of protecting these areas without being overbearing. The three of us were part of a twelve person trip, mixed group and we all enjoyed ourselves. The time passed quickly, we saw seals throughout and lots of birds with regular stops to see the wildlife. It was a real bonus to have this right on our doorstep. Would definitely recommend this trip, it’s great value.

We booked a trip to see the seals with Tony Over the phone. On the day of our trip the weather didn’t look great, Tony phoned a couple hours before having looked at weather and explained it would go ahead. We are glad it did. It was fantastic. Tony is a very friendly, happy and knowledgeable guy. He is a local so knew the area and it’s history very well. As a local fisherman he knew lots about the wildlife and seals. We saw plenty of seals and he stopped the boat and chatted whilst we were looking at them. Interacted with the kids and made a real effort to make the trip a great one. I’d recommend booking in advance as he is clearly popular and gets busy. Great for both couples and families

After being met at chandlery We boarded old traditional wooden boat for our trip round the area. Due to strength of wind the trip was to be slightly different to usual as we had to keep to more sheltered waters. We had regular stops where we were given information about the estuary and had all wildlife pointed out to us as we went round. We saw lots of RED seals. You won't see these anywhere else as they actually common seals that pick up the oxide from the marsh where they lay up which colours them a magnificent red colour. We also saw a large grey seal and lots of varied bird life. Was a great trip and the 2 hours soon passed. The skipper also assisted recovering a rower in difficulty who couldn't row against wind and tide and towed him to safety. A lovely trip and highly recommended for all ages.

We have done this trip twice over last couple of years when we have had friends or family down to stay and everyone enjoyed it, adults and children alike. We found the best time for the amount of seals was when pups were a month or so old, end may through to july, then you see loads of seals. Tony, who runs the boat trips knows his stuff.

We went last year with friends. The guy who takes you out is very knowledgeable about the backwaters and wildlife. The trip is very gentle so as not to disturb the seals of which there are many.

Seal watching in Arthur Ransome’s ‘Secret Water’

Experience two hours of seal watching in the Walton Backwater under the guidance of an experienced boatman and naturalist.

During your trip, you will encounter common and grey seals, plus many other rare and beautiful birds and wildlife that live with the Hamford Water Nature Reserve.  The best way to see the seals is to take a trip on Tony Haggis’s boat Karina which can be booked in the summer months. Why not also go on one of their evening trips and you may encounter an enchanting Walton sunset.

While you are in the area why not go fossil hunting on the cliffs at Walton-on-the-Naze? They form one of the finest geological sites in Britain and for that reason are a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). At the base of the cliffs is London Clay which is 54 million years old and it is overlaid with a sandy deposit called Red Crag (2 Million years old). This sandy deposit contains a large number of fossils including shells, sharks teeth and bird skeletons.
