When buying perfume, many factors come into play. Chief among them is the size of the perfume bottle since this directly impacts the fragrance quantity and, consequently, the cost. Unfortunately, if you’re a first-time buyer, and depending on where you purchase from, perfume sizes can be bewildering.

Perfumes and colognes typically come either in fluid ounces (fl oz) or milliliters (ml). The measurement used depends on the perfume store. Sizes range from 1.5 ml (0.05 fl oz) to 250 ml (8.5 fl oz), but the sizes are the same regardless of whether you are buying perfume or cologne.

Which Cologne Size Is the Best Buy?

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to cologne size. This is because a range of factors and circumstances determine the ideal size. But before we get into these factors – and offer tips on how to establish the best size for you – let’s first take a detailed look at the standard perfume sizes available in the market.

Perfume Bottle Sizes

Most people are familiar with the 50 ml and 100 ml (1.7 fl oz and 3.4 fl oz) perfume sizes, as they are quite common. But did you know fragrances come in much larger flacons? Some scents go up to 250 ml (8.5 fl oz). Other than these, we also have the following key sizes:

• 30 ml (1 ounce)
• 75 ml (2.5 fl oz)
• 125 ml (4.2 fl oz)

Perfume bottles come in all shapes and designs, but this doesn’t affect the content amount. To confirm the size of your preferred fragrance, check the label on the packaging or the bottom of the flacon.

Below is an actual perfume bottle size chart in ounces, along with their milliliter equivalents and the number of sprays you can expect to get from each size.

Pro Tip: On average, fragrance atomizers provide 10 sprays for each ml . Consequently, a standard 1.5 ml sample size gives you 15 sprays. The measure is standard across colognes and perfumes. Also, some bottles sport atomizers that deliver fragrance in a fine mist, giving you just the right amount for your skin.

Not all fragrance houses present their fragrances in the above sizes. Indeed, some sizes are hard to come by. Still, some brands offer samples and travel-size bottles in smaller sizes.

You may be wondering why perfumers sell their compositions in the above sizes. This usually depends on the perfume. For example, popular fragrances typically come packaged in bottles of 50 ml to 100 ml (1.7 to 3.4 fl oz). These amounts provide a considerable number of sprays (750 – 1500) and last for some time (approximately 150 to 300 days).

Again, some countries use milliliters rather than fluid ounces as units of measurement. In this case, you will find perfumes and colognes sizes advertised in terms of milliliters. 

Note : American fluid ounces and British fluid ounces differ, albeit slightly. 3.4 US fl oz (100.55 ml) equals 3.4 UK fl oz (96.60 ml). Not to worry though, the variance translates to only a few sprays.

What Determines the Most Appropriate Perfume Size?

For most users, the biggest determinant in perfume size is usually the value they are getting. All things considered, larger-sized bottles generally deliver more value for money. By this, we mean the given perfume ticks all the right boxes. These include superior performance – long-staying power and great projection – versatility, and a beautiful aroma.

Another key factor is the occasion. Taking a week’s vacation over the summer? No need to haul your 200 ml (6.7 fl oz) bottle. Go for a 5 -15 ml (0.17- 0.5 oz) bottle instead. Not only will you save on space, but you’ll also avoid taking unnecessary risks -yes, we’re talking accidental falls and leakages.

Fragrance concentration also weighs in here. Generally, 3 to 5 sprays will often do the trick, depending on the notes and perfume oil concentration. 

Here are some general guidelines for determining the best perfume size for you. 

First-time buyer

If you are purchasing a certain perfume for the first time, we recommend keeping your purchase to below 30 ml or 1 fl oz. The same applies if you are buying blind, planning to use the perfume on special occasions only, or if it’s a scent you’ve never used before.

Are you buying yourself a signature scent? If so, consider going for a bigger size. Given that you’ll be wearing your favorite scent often, it makes economic sense to buy a large-sized bottle (works out much more affordable per spray or ml) besides saving you many trips to the perfume store. Intended usage

When do you plan to use the perfume? For instance, if you want something light and easy to carry around, consider purchasing a travel-size perfume. A 15 ml (0.5 fl oz) bottle will fit easily in your purse or handbag, whereas a 100 ml (3.4 fl oz) flacon will present a challenge.

Bigger is not always better

A large bottle is not always the best choice. If you get a big bottle and tire of it before it gets finished, you’ll have wasted your money. You may also possess an extensive collection , such that the new fragrance will form part of your rotation – meaning you’ll only get to use it occasionally. Choose wisely. 

Pro Tip : When taking a flight, you can carry a 100 ml (3.4 fl oz) bottle of perfume in your carry-on or check-in luggage. However, TSA regulations require you to bag the bottle in a transparent plastic bag to prevent leaks.

Even after considering the above guidelines regarding determining the ideal cologne size for your needs, there’s still one more step to go through before making a commitment. And it’s very crucial. You need to test the perfume on yourself.  

The thing is, fragrances smell differently on different people, so you shouldn’t buy a fragrance solely because it smells lovely on your friend. Spray it on to see if you like how it smells and whether it suits your needs.

That being said, you don’t want to test too many fragrances at once, as you might experience a situation where all the aromas begin to mingle. This would affect your overall impression of each fragrance, making you even more confused about the best option for you.

Again, you need to take your time testing these fragrances. Never buy a perfume solely because you adore the top notes, as the rest of the fragrance notes take time to develop to their full potential. Also, the aroma changes the longer you wear the perfume.

If you’re a rookie in the world of fragrances, knowing your way around perfume bottle sizes is an essential skill to have.

If you’re a pro, reminding yourself of the basics once in a while will help you make more informed choices.

How Do You Determine How Big a Perfume Bottle Is?

The easiest way to determine the size of a perfume is to simply check the label at the perfume store.

The units are normally in fluid ounces or milliliters, depending on the manufacturer or the country you live in.

If you can’t find the size on the label, try checking the bottom of the bottle, or sometimes the box.

For obvious reasons, this will all be impossible to do for the many online shoppers out there. 

But most of the time, the size is usually indicated right on the product page of the fragrance you’re about to buy.

If the size of a perfume you like is in fluid ounces and you’re not used to buying fragrances, make sure you tread carefully.

This is because not all of the said units are the same.

What is the Difference Between US fl oz and UK fl oz?

The former, as you might have guessed, is the American fluid ounce, while the latter, the most common, is the UK unit (normally presented without “UK”).

It’s almost impossible, for instance, for a perfume to be in quart size.

To get a better understanding of how they measure up:

1 US fl oz = 29.57 ml

1 fl oz = 28.41 ml

You might feel like asking why there are two types of fluid ounce measurements in the first place.

And while I’m not qualified to answer that, you can trust me when I say that my head hurts too when thinking about it!

Perfume Bottle Size Chart

How many sprays are there per ml.

From the different sizes above, a simple calculation of 50 by 5 ml, for example, tells us that there are about 10 sprays per ml.

But maybe you don’t use your perfume that often.

And your number one worry, in this case, is that it might go bad. 

The first thing you need to know here is that perfumes expire in three to five years. And chances are, you’ll go through it before the expiry date.

If you just stocked up on the biggest bottle of your signature fragrance, there are still a few simple tips you can follow to aid the scent’s durability.

• Store the perfume in its original packaging.
• Keep the bottle cool, and out of direct sunlight.
• Put the cap on when not in use.
• Whenever possible, keep it in its original bottle.
• Don’t shake the perfume.

What Size Perfume Bottle Should I Get?

Before going into the specifics, make sure that you’re aware of the most common perfume sizes.

Not because a 100 ml bottle suits you best (it might), but because we don’t want you to go home with a liter of perfume on your first buy!

The most common sizes are typically:

• 30 ml (mainstream small size)
• 50 ml (mainstream medium size)
• 100 ml (mainstream large size)

If You’re Feeling Expensive

10 ml to 15 ml perfume bottles will be perfect for you.

A lot of manufacturers don’t make perfumes in these sizes, but some of the expensive ones do (Yves Saint Laurent for example).

If an individual fragrance is special to you but the price is mind-boggling, going for a smaller size is recommended.

For Gifts and Specific Occasions

Small bottle sizes of 25 ml to 40 ml should be enough for the medium to long run, even if the recipient is an avid user.

However, if they don’t wear perfume that much (or only do so for special occasions), a medium-sized bottle might be too big for them.

This size also fits you if a spray from your best perfume smells extremely aromatic.

In some cases, you might, however, want to gift an entire bottle to someone. 

Going for a small size, in this case, will give you some leeway, just in case they don’t like it, not to mention that they’re also perfect for a blind buy, especially when shopping for perfumes online.

For Room to Alternate

Medium-sized perfume bottles of 50 ml to 75 ml will perform exceptionally.

Maybe you’re fond of having different fragrances.

Grabbing different 50 ml bottles instead of a whole bottle of only one scent will ensure smooth transitions between your other scents. 

It will also make sure that they don’t last too long (or get used up too quickly).

For That Unique, Signature Scent

A large bottle of 100 ml to 125 ml is your best friend.

These perfume bottles also present great value for money.

In fact, the difference in price between them and the medium bottles isn’t too dissimilar at all.

If your trademark fragrance is an eau de toilette, then a large size may be better considering it’s normally not that strong.

No Room For Experimentation

In this instance, a 150 ml to 200 ml full-size bottle is the one for you.

You might obviously experiment once in a while, but maybe you do it so rarely that it only makes sense to stock up on a bigger bottle of your daily perfume.

These super-large perfume bottles also work well for when you want to decant some of that liquid gold into smaller bottles.

They are also much better value for money.

Are Sample Perfume Bottles OK?

A sample vial (normally the smallest size) is best suited for testing scents.

When buying samples online, or even in a store (if you’re new to the process), spray on only one fragrance, and leave it on for several hours.

Not only will you see how well the scent develops, but it will also prevent you from being misled by its top notes.

Moreover, you’ll avoid mixing it up with other fragrances if you’re at a perfume counter. 

Sample sizes, in general, are too small for daily use.

What Size Perfume Bottle Can I Take on a Plane?

The middle-sized bottles (50 ml to 75 ml) are the most recommended.

This applies to an eau de cologne as it does to an eau de parfum. 

The limit in most countries is 100 ml, and according to the TSA , a plastic, or carry-on bag is best-suited to prevent spillage.

Alternatively, you can also go for one of the smaller sizes (e.g. 25 ml) if the trip is short. 

The Bottom Line

It’s probably not your biggest wardrobe enigma, but understanding how to structure your fragrance purchases around size will save you a lot of time (and money!) in the long run.

I Downsized My Perfume Collection from 58 to 13—The Mini Versions of My Faves

When I packed up my Culver City apartment last November in order to move into my new place in Santa Monica, it became immediately clear that I had an obscenely large, completely unhinged perfume collection:  58  if we want to chat specifics. I'm  a Taurus through and through, so even though I stubbornly insisted on packing every last one and taking it to my new, much smaller apartment, upon arrival, I was deluged with regret. Of course, I only kept the perfumes that I wear most often and consider prized possessions, all of which are handily available in  nibble-friendly travel sizes to boot. People frequently ask me about my fragrance collection or what my favorite scents of all time are , and if you keep reading, you'll uncover the answers. And since the majority are pretty steep investments if you spring for the full size, I led with their more affordable travel-size alternatives. 1. Glossier You Solid Eau de Parfum

Key Notes:  Ambrox, ambrette, musk, iris root, pink pepperGlossier You is already an iconic fragrance in its own right, and it definitely has to be in my top 10 favorite perfumes of all time. The brand somewhat recently relaunched the cult-loved scent in solid form, so you can bask in its milky, ambery, musky perfection, any time, anywhere. I actually have the full size and two of the solids— that's how obsessed I am with this perfume.

2. Ellis Brooklyn Rrose Eau de Parfum

Key Notes:  Centifolia rose, Sicilian lemon, musk, patchouli, peony, rhubarb I own eight—yes, eight—of Ellis Brooklyn's stunning clean and sustainable perfumes (Bee, Salt, Sweet, Super Amber, Après, Fable, Fawn, and Rrose), but if I had to choose a favorite child, I'd easily select the latter. It's beautiful, classic, and entirely luxurious. It's the kind of scent I can imagine wearing on my wedding day. I actually received the travel size from the brand when it launched, and I loved it so much that I bought the full size as soon as it was available. I highly recommend it for the floral perfume connoisseurs out there. 

3. Tom Ford Bitter Peach Private Blend Eau de Parfum

Key Notes:  Pêche de vigne, blood orange, patchouli Bitter Peach is my favorite fragrance of all time. I have never smelled something so juicy, complex, and all-around addicting. It lingers and melts into your skin for a really warm and beautiful finish, but the mix of peach, davana (an aromatic herb native to India), and patchouli is so unique—I've never smelt anything like it. I can't get over it, and the second I spritzed it, I knew it was over for me and every other perfume I ever claimed to love. Buy the travel size (and perhaps eventually the full size), and it will be the best thing you gift yourself maybe ever. Normally, I say fragrance and perfume are extremely subjective, but this bottle just might be the exception.

4. DedCool 03 "Blonde" Eau de Parfum

Key Notes : Juniper berries, pomelo, saffron, accord cuir, black violet. cristal rose, blonde woods, raspberry vetiver I love this perfume from sustainable, nontoxic, and vegan fragrance brand DedCool, and it's been a heavy hitter in my rotation ever since I discovered it a little more than a year ago. (Also, if you care about this kind of thing, it's the most-loved perfume in my collection whenever I ask guys to rate their favorites.) The brand says, "You attract what you are. This scent smells like you'll get stopped on the street when you walk by—a smell that everyone around you will be thinking about all day," and honestly, I couldn't agree more considering that's pretty much been my experience with it!

5. Kilian Paris Good Girl Gone Bad Eau de Parfum

Key Notes:  Tuberose absolute, jasmine, narcissus, orange blossom, osmanthus No one's fragrance wardrobe is complete without one of Kilian's bewitching fragrances. The brand makes numerous favorites beloved by celebrities and beauty editors alike, but if I had access to your shopping cart and credit card, Good Girl Gone Bad is the poison I'd pick for you, and I can't imagine my scent collection without it. I sure do have a type, so, surprise surprise, this one, which is a member of Kilian's "Narcotics Family,"—fruity and floral with starring notes like orange blossom, osmanthus, and tuberose. Try it in the handy travel size first if you want the dent in your wallet to be less dramatic.

6. Byredo Young Rose Eau de Parfum

Key Notes:  Ambrette seeds, sichuan pepper, orris, damascena rose, musks, ambroxan If I had to describe my fragrance MO in one word, it would be "pretty." I tend to like light, floral, semi-sweet scents, but they have to have enough of a base to not lean too saccharine. I love rose perfumes, and this one balances Damascus rose with spicy Sichuan pepper, and headier hits of musk, Ambroxan, ambrette seeds, and orris, It's floral but far from basic. People always want to know what I'm wearing when I'm wearing this and they hug me, and if you ask me, it definitely deserves a spot atop your vanity this season.

7. Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin Eau de Parfum

Key Notes:  Rose, violet, pink and black pepper, muskAccording to the Serge Lutens website, Lutens considers the perfume-making process an art, not a job—something you'll instantly understand the second you get a whiff of any one of his remarkable French-made fragrance masterpieces. La Fille de Berlin leads with rose, but more unorthodox additions like violet, musk, plus pink and black pepper, reveal said rose's thorns. The brand categorizes the scent as "smoky woods"—think a warm yet haunting mix of ginger, bergamot, neroli, pepper, iris, clary sage, sandalwood, palo santo, and vetiver—a composition of notes that I wouldn't think I'd like if I hadn't smelled this perfume. That being said, it's positively intoxicating, and the way it plays out once it's on your skin is incredibly unique and special. This is a fragrance that has already burrowed itself deep into my heart. Oh, and as if it even needed more brownie points, it boasts over 98% natural and naturally derived ingredients, so you can feel that much better each and every time you imbibe.

10. Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne

Key Notes:  Ambrette seeds, sea salt, sageThis beloved Jo Malone London cologne, which is the next best thing to visiting the Cliffs of Dover—complete with windswept hair and salt-crusted skin—is timeless. The scent it leaves behind is so natural and dewy, like how you'd smell if you spent the afternoon outside soaking up the grass, fog, and salty seas. If you're someone who wants something more woody and earthy, but still velvety and luxe, it's the perfect antidote. It makes me feel nostalgic, I just can't pinpoint why. Which almost makes it even more enchanting?

11. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Féminin Pluriel Eau de Parfum

Key Notes : Iris, violet, rose. jasmine, lily of the valley, orange blossom, vetiver, orange blossom This delicate perfume smells like a bouquet composed of florals from all around the world: patchouli from Indonesia, Iris from Florence, Rose from Grasse, and jasmine from Egypt. Maison Francis Kurkdjian makes lots of very iconic scents—most notably Bacarate Rouge 540—but this dark horse scent is the one I slyly wear and recommend the most.

Key Notes:  Bergamot, Tuscan leather, galbanum, patchouli, black amber I like to have a variety of perfumes for every mood and occasion, and while I'm not typically a huge fan of ultra-green or fresh scents, this one is such a winner in my book and treads lighter and juicier thanks to the hits of black amber and bergamot. I liken it to the olfactory equivalent of the perfect white T or a luxe set of leather trousers. It's my top recommendation when people ask about Vilhelm's library of scents and is inspired by the grassy Swedish coast.

13. Fenty Beauty Fenty Eau de Parfum

Key Notes:  Magnolia, musk, tangerine, Bulgarian rose, vanilla, blueberry, coconut, geranium, patchouli Is there anyone on this planet who doesn't want to smell like Rihanna? I feel like the only answer there is no, right? The bottle itself is beautiful and so is the scent. Interestingly, it's comprised exclusively of middle notes and it has a unique, ultra-fine mist that rains down evenly on an entire area of skin—like your chest—without over-saturating. The smell itself is hard to describe, and unlike so many fragrances, it doesn't translate as purely floral, fruity, or saccharinely warm and sweet. It balances magnolia, musk, tangerine, blueberry, and light whiffs of Bulgarian rose absolute, geranium, and patchouli. In my opinion, it's one of the best fragrance launches in the past few years, grab the travel size, and you'll easily understand why. (Plus, I guarantee you'll come back for more!)

Perfume Bottle Sizes ( Plus Travel Bottle Sizes)

If you’re planning a flight out of town, then you’ll want to make sure that all of your essentials are neatly packed. Liquids are kind of tricky since you can only bring so much before the TSA confiscates them. So, if you want to take perfume with you, do you need to transfer it to a travel bottle?

Perfume is typically sold in bottles measuring between 0.05 and 4.2 fl. oz. Travel bottles for perfume, shampoo, and other liquids are usually limited to 3.4 fl. oz. to adhere to the TSA’s restrictions of liquid carry-on. Large perfume bottles are not allowed on flights.

In this guide, I’ll explain the different perfume bottles and travel bottle sizes, why there is a restriction on liquid carry-on in the first place, and how to pack liquids for your upcoming flight.

Perfume Bottle Sizes

If you purchase bottled perfume at a brick-and-mortar store, you shouldn’t have much trouble finding how many fluid ounces or milliliters are in the bottle. However, shopping online and having the perfume shipped to your home can be a bit more challenging. That’s why it’s a good idea to ask the seller how much perfume is in the bottle in the first place.

But if you forgot to ask, here’s a quick rundown of the most popular perfume bottle sizes.

Are there larger perfume bottles than 4.2 fluid ounces? Of course, there are. However, most large-size perfume bottles will be limited to 3 or 4.2 fluid ounces, which equates to between 36 and 50 spritzes ( between 9 and 12 spritzes per 1 fluid ounce ).

Travel Bottle Sizes

Before I go on to explain how many fluid ounces and milliliters are in a travel bottle, it’s important that we establish what a travel bottle is.

From its name, we can conclude that a travel bottle is a bottle made for traveling. To be more specific, a travel bottle is a bottle that is specifically designed to hold as much liquid as the TSA allows on flights.

So, a travel bottle is a bottle that holds 3.4 fluid ounces (100 milliliters) of liquid when full. There are also smaller travel bottles measuring between 1 and 3 fluid ounces.

Why Does the TSA Restrict Liquid Carry-on?

To many people, 3.4 fluid ounces or 100 milliliters might sound like an arbitrary figure designed to make traveling more cumbersome, but that’s not the case.

Back in 2006 , some irresponsible people tried to sneak liquid explosives onto a plane in Britain. After extensive research, scientists concluded more than 3.4 fluid ounces of a liquid explosive would cause significant damage to an aircraft. Afterward, the TSA imposed the 3-1-1 rule.

What Is the TSA’s 3-1-1 Rule?

In short, the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule states that passengers may fill a 1-quart bag with containers measuring no more than 3.4 fluid ounces. Usually, the number of bottles is limited to 2 or 3, depending on the physical measurements of the bottle.

The types of liquids you can take aboard a flight include aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes. The FAA allows for restricted medicinal and toiletry items, which include perfumes and cologne.

What Happens When You Have More than 3.4 Fluid Ounces of Perfume?

If you attempt to take more than 3.4 fluid ounces of liquid in a single container onto a flight, the TSA agent might confiscate the container. However, if you have travel bottles on hand, they might sometimes let you transfer the perfume into the travel bottles. They might not appreciate you trying to pull a quick one, but at least they won’t take your perfume away.

However, if you don’t have travel bottles and a 1-quart resealable bag, then the TSA agent will take your perfume away, and there’s nothing you can do about it unless you want to miss your flight.

How to Pack Liquids for a Flight

If you know your perfume bottle contains more than 3.4 fluid ounces, then you will need to transfer the perfume into travel bottles. So, the first thing you should do is pick up a pack of travel bottles, such as the LiquiSnugs Silicone Bottles for Toiletries .

Now, carefully unscrew the perfume bottle and pour the contents into the travel bottle. Make sure to wipe away any spills with a clean rag or paper towel. Continue doing this until you have prepared enough perfume for your trip.

After filling the travel bottle(s) with perfume, slip the closed travel bottles into a 1-quart resealable bag . Lock the zip and make sure that your bottles can’t come out of the bag. To be extra safe, place the bag inside another bag with its zip side down.

How Much Perfume Do You Need per Day?

It depends on how potent your perfume is. Some perfumes can last an entire 24 hours on a single spritz, while others may require re-spritzing once every 6 to 8 hours.

On average, 1 fluid ounce of perfume is enough for 9 to 12 spritzes. Depending on how long-lasting your perfume is, that means 1 fluid ounce should between 3 to 12 days. If you’re planning a week-long trip, you’ll only need to fill a single 3.4-fluid-ounce travel bottle with your favorite perfume.

Can You Put Perfume in a Checked-in Suitcase or Bag?

Yes, you can. In fact, if you want to take more perfume with you on a trip (perhaps you’re planning a 2-month-long vacation somewhere tropical), then you can place larger perfume containers in your check-in luggage.

At most, the FAA allows for 70 ounces (0.5 kilograms) or 68 fluid ounces (2 liters) of a permitted liquid in checked-in luggage per person. However, you must split the liquid into 17-fluid-ounce (500-milliliter) containers, which means you can only pack a total of 4 17-fluid-ounce bottles for your trip.

Don’t worry about that not being enough perfume for your trip. Following the 9-to-12-spray formula, 68 fluid ounces of perfume equals as many as 816 sprays or more than a year’s worth of perfume!

How to Remove Perfume Stains from Carry-on bag or Suitcase?

Even if you were super careful about packing perfume, there’s still a slight chance that the bottle will leak. When this happens, all of your bags will be left with a concentrated smell of your favorite fragrance. And as we all know, too much of a good thing can be bad.

If your perfume spills all over your bag, place the opened bag under the sun and let it sit for 2 to 3 hours. Next, rinse the bag with a moist cloth before rubbing the bag with vinegar.

After that, let it sit for an additional 30 to 60 minutes before filling the bag with activated charcoal bags to absorb the residual fragrance. It can take as many as 2 days for the charcoal bags to completely get rid of the sharpness of the concentrated perfume.

Should You Bring Perfume or Buy It at Your Destination?

That’s entirely up to you. Perhaps you’re accustomed to using a particular fragrance that might not be readily available in your destination city, state, or country. If this is the case, then you should take your own perfume with you (remember the 3-1-1 rule!).

Alternatively, if you can easily purchase the perfume at your destination, that would make things a lot easier. However, if you have leftover perfume when your vacation comes to an end, remember to separate the perfume into 3.4-fluid-ounce bottles before boarding your flight back home.

Perfume Bottle Sizes Guide: Which One Do You Need?

When you’re new to collecting personal fragrances, you might accumulate lots of perfume bottles that go unused over time. It’s possible that you won’t even get to the bottom of those fragrances in one lifetime. 

And this is when you realize that you have more bottles of perfume than you may actually need. But you love scents, so how do you avoid collecting a massive amount of unused perfume? Consider testing out different bottle sizes!

What Are Your Perfume Bottle Size Options?

As you can imagine, perfume bottles come in a variety of sizes. Not every brand offers their fragrance in each of these sizes, but here is a list of common sizes you might expect:

Conversions are not always exact. For example, 6.7 oz is actually 198 mL, but it’s usually rounded up to 200 mL. Similarly, 5 oz is actually 147.8 mL – rounding up is common.

Also “oz” is actually fluid ounces, “fl oz.” I’m not sure why it’s abbreviated, possibly due to limited space equity on perfume bottles and boxes. But this also varies by brand.

How Long Will a Bottle of Perfume Last?

The length of time a bottle of perfume lasts depends on how often the perfume is used. If you spray large amounts on a daily basis, then you’ll be replacing that bottle of perfume sooner than if you were to use it more sparingly.

It has been said that the average person sprays about three to four pumps out of their perfume bottle with each use. The number of sprays you’ll get out of each bottle will depend on its size. Overall, though, there are about 10 sprays per 1 mL. 

For instance, 0.25 oz (7 mL) is a good travel-size perfume vial. It would contain about 70 sprays. So, one container would last approximately 20 days, using an average of three and a half pumps. 

A medium-sized perfume bottle, on the other hand, can last close to a year or more. If you have a bottle that’s between 100 mL to 150 mL, you can expect to get between 1,000-1,500 sprays out of it. At three to four sprays per day (3.5 average sprays), that means it’ll last you between 285 – 429 days. 

Of course the atomizer quality is a factor as well. If the pump oversprays, causing leakage, you’ll use more perfume than intended. If it undersprays, or occasionally spurts out, you’ll not release as much fragrance as desired. 

But here’s a chart offering a general idea of what you might expect in terms of longevity from your perfume bottle based on three sprays per day.

Average Sprays Per Perfume Bottle Size & Potential Usage in Days

In addition to the bottle size and number of sprays you use daily, perfume concentration is another factor that can influence what size bottle you’ll need.

In most cases, perfume has the highest fragrance concentration and will last a full day after just one application . So the chart above offers an accurate description of what you can expect in terms of longevity per bottle.

An eau de parfum would only last a working day – so close to eight hours. This is because it has less fragrance oil in its formula. Eau de toilettes and colognes have even less fragrance in them, so they only last for a few hours.

In terms of value, perfumes are the better choice because you can use less and enjoy the fragrance for a full 24 hours. Here’s a brief historical context .

Which Perfume Bottle Size Do You Need?

Determining which size perfume bottle you’ll need is a personal decision. This choice largely depends on where and how you’ll be using the perfume. Based on the chart above, you may also want to ask yourself how long you want the bottle to last. 

Switch Up Your Scents

Some people are loyal to one scent, and that’s fine. But one reason to purchase smaller perfume bottles is if you like variety. If you know off hand that you like to switch up your scents every few days, then buying a small bottle of each might work best for you.  

Since you’ll only use a small amount of each fragrance, only purchasing as much as you need can help minimize waste.

You’re left free to explore new fragrances that are released throughout the year, or you can purchase a new scent every season. It’s up to you but small bottles can have great value, in a personal way.

Traveling Light, Or Not

When traveling by air , each passenger is allowed to bring up to 100 mL (3.4 oz) of liquids on the plane with them. Perfumes fall into the liquid category. This means that you can take one 100 mL bottle, or multiple smaller bottles that equal up to 100 mL.

But you’ll likely need to take other liquids, like facial cleansers, mouthwash, etc, along with you as well. This is where tiny bottles of perfume come in handy.

If your trip is five days or less, you would only need a 1.5 mL bottle of your favorite fragrance to last you until you return home. A 5 mL would have you covered if you’re away for two weeks.

For longer trips that require larger luggage to be checked in, you can place any size perfume bottle in your check-in bag without penalty. Just be sure to place it inside a waterproof bag, and then cushion the bag to prevent breakage. You may not like your favorite scent as much if it breaks and seeps into all of your other belongings.

Test New or Expensive Fragrances

Fragrances sprayed into the air or on test strips don’t always smell the same when sprayed onto your body. It’s even possible to enjoy a fragrance after it’s immediately sprayed on, and then dislike it as the day progresses.

Understanding this can cause you to be hesitant to commit to paying large sums for perfume that you aren’t sure you’ll actually use every day .

But many retailers allow you to either sample smaller bottle sizes, or purchase a decanted scent in order to test a new fragrance.

Buying smaller bottles or decanted perfumes is a nice way to sample an expensive scent without the upfront investment costs. It’s a fairly low risk if you later find that you dislike the scent or it happens to irritate your skin.

In addition to the price break, it’s another way to sample fragrances that you may otherwise have never come across. This is especially true of rare scents that may not be easily accessible where you are.

There are individuals who’ll purchase these fragrances, and then decant them, making them available to buyers online. Rich and Luxe, Scent Split, and Decant Boutique are a few examples.

Stick with What You Love

Manufacturers have a knack for making their larger perfume bottles look irresistible. Even if a 50 mL bottle has the same shape, something about the 150 mL bottle simply looks fancier, more sophisticated, or otherwise more eye-catching.

If displaying your perfume bottles is part of the allure of using personal fragrances, then opting for large bottles might be more appealing to you.

Maximize Your Purchase 

And there’s an alternative option if you enjoy the aesthetics of larger perfume bottles but are unlikely to use all of the juice inside. Decant them.

Your feelings about a fragrance may change over time, but you aren’t stuck with that scent. There are any number of perfume decanting kits available in various sizes and styles, along with funnels.

For instance, this kit comes with six 10 mL glass bottles, labeling stickers, two droppers, and two funnels. If you’re decanting more than one scent, it helps to filter each fragrance through its own funnel.

There are also 30 mL bottles , and various handle color options. Sleeker designs also exist.

Decanting is the best solution for selling off the perfume that you aren’t or won’t ever use. Keep some, sell some, you, your customers, and the environment all win.

Are Larger Perfume Bottles More Economical?

Some people prefer to purchase larger perfume bottles because they feel as though they’re getting more value for the dollars spent. In terms of volume, you usually pay less per ounce of a fragrance when you purchase the larger bottle.

But are you really saving with larger bottles if you aren’t going to use it all, anyway? That is the question you have to ask yourself. 

If you plan to decant the amount you know you won’t use, then you can give a portion of your perfume away as gifts or sell them to others.

Otherwise, you might be stuck with a larger bottle that doesn’t actually offer you any additional value.

Do Larger Bottles of Perfume Smell Different Over Time?

Scents like Coco Chanel Mademoiselle have endured for decades and each bottle can last for years while the fragrance remains the same. But it’s up to you to protect your fragrance so that it can last for years to come.

Some of the suggested ways to do this is by keeping your bottle of perfume away from direct sunlight. Keep your bottles closed when not in use because air also diminishes the fragrance. No matter which bottle size you choose, make sure to store them in a cool, dry location.

Perfumistas anonymous, size matters: perfume bottle sizes.

My partial collection – lots of different sizes!

I know this topic is a little dry but I wanted to clear up any confusion that some of you may have regarding perfume bottle sizes.

Perfumes are sold in a variety of bottle sizes which indicate the volume of fluid in the bottle, decant or vial of scent. They are typically measured in milliliters (ml) or ounces. When measured in ounces this is generally indicated by fl oz. or just oz. Perfumers can use one or the other but since most countries are metric you’ll commonly see the amount listed in millimeters instead of or in addition to ounces. To make matters confusing, there are US fl oz and UK fl oz but they are very similar. If the bottles don’t specifically say UK then it’s probably safe to assume that the US measure is used.

Here are some of the most common sizes you’ll come across:

0.05 fl oz – 1.5 ml  This is basically a sample vial that you’ll receive when buying samples online or the size that you’ll likely be given if you ask for a sample politely at a perfume counter.

.17 fl oz – 5 ml  This is the size of a Travalo spray atomizer which they state on their website will contain up to 65 sprays. It’s ideally suited to carry in a small purse when you’re out and about.

.08 fl oz – 15 ml  This is typically the size of a thin and long purse spray.

1 fl oz – 30 ml This is a conventional size.

1.4 oz – 40 ml

1.7 oz – 50 ml This is a conventional size.

2 fl oz – 60 ml

3 fl oz – 90 ml

3.4 fl oz – 100 ml This is a conventional size.

4.2 fl oz – 125 ml

So now that you know what the typical perfume bottle sizes are you might want to know which is the best size to buy…

The answer is that it just depends. If you are buying a perfume for the first time then the rule of thumb is to stick with a smaller size. It could be something you smelled on someone else but haven’t actually tried on yourself. If it’s a true “blind buy” that led you to purchase the perfume after reading a glowing review on a magazine or on one of the many websites you frequent this should be your golden rule.

Most of us have made the mistake of falling prematurely in love with a perfume and later realize that there’s something about it after wearing it for awhile that really turns you off. Been there, done that, and may fall victim to my urges again but hope not. If you haven’t spent a fortune buying the biggest bottle around it’s less traumatic when you need to exile it permanently.

If you’re restocking an old favorite then go for the largest size you see since it will end up costing you less per ml. Even then, be sure and sample the perfume first since many perfumes are reformulated and the new version may be nothing like the old one. Perfumes don’t go bad very quickly as long as they’ve been properly stored and should last at least a year, often much longer.

When buying a perfume I know I love and will be wearing year-round, I usually buy the 3.4 oz size for my dresser and fill a Travalo with my beloved scent when traveling.  And speaking of travel, the largest acceptable size for carry-on luggage seems to be 3.4 oz and it must be contained in a bag no larger than a quart size. After you’ve cleared security, you can bring any purchases you made at Duty Free on board flights even if this exceeds 3.4 oz as long as the seal on the packaging isn’t broken and you can present a receipt when asked. For checked baggage I’m not aware of any requirements but it’s always best to check with your airline before flying.

If the perfume is one that I anticipate wearing only part or the year – since it’s more of a warm weather or cold weather scent – sometimes I’ll buy the 1.7 oz. size instead of the 3.4.

Which size perfume would you recommend buying for a significant other? Christmas is coming up and not sure whether to gift a 100ml or 50ml size bottle. Mind you , this is a fragrance which he hasn’t had before so I guess there is slight risk involved?

Glad you found it useful. While the larger size is generally a better value, if your significant other hasn’t ever tried it I’d opt for a 50 ml. If he loves it you can get him a 100 ml when it runs out.

I never knew that perfume bottles came in rather handy and easy to carry sizes that could easily fit inside a ladies purse – def gotta get some of that size for my lady to carry around when she needs/wants a quick and easy spray.

To answer your own question regarding airlines, checked baggage has no limits to how much liquids can be contained, I have even checked in 3×1 litre of liquids with absolutel no problems or questions asked. It is carry own luggage that is subject to the 100ml maximum rule and must be in a sealed plastic bag, one of those with a plastic “zipper” thing.

I am a very frequent flyier – my source!

I’m not aware of any limits on the amount of perfume carried on checked bags either although I’ve heard stories about perfume “mysteriously” disappearing from checked bags. This seems to occur most often when the perfume is brand new and still in box. I usually travel with perfume in my carry on but if I need to put it in a checked bag I just cross my fingers that it’ll still be there when I unpack.

I had never consciously thought about the size of a perfume bottle. But you are right, when I repurchase a perfume I love, I tend to buy a bigger bottle of it, simply because I know that I will be wearing it a lot. But I know that I have also bought a larger size of a perfume that I smelled in the store, only to get home and realize that I didn’t like it as much as I thought I did. And now I have the huge bottle of perfume that will just be collecting dust. So size does matter!

We’ve all made that mistake I think. I try to stick with a smaller size bottle until I’m absolutely sure I’ll be wearing the fragrance a lot.

Eau de Space — Which Smells Like Actual Outer Space — Could Be Your New Signature Scent

Pretty soon, you could smell like outer space.

A fragrance developed Steve Pearce — a chemist and founder of Omega Ingredients , a company that creates scents and flavors for the food and beverage industry — that was originally used to help NASA astronauts prepare for space missions and adapt to the smells of orbit, is now bottled and in the works to be sold to space fanatics everywhere on Kickstarter.

Pearce told CNN that remaking the scent on Earth started in 2008 when he was originally contracted by NASA to recreate the smell of the inside of the Mir Space Station.

Fast forward to 2020 and the smell of space can be your next fragrance. However, the perfume, aptly named "Eau de Space," is unlikely to make it on the cosmetic store shelves next to Chanel No. 5 as the company's product manager, Matt Richmond, described the smell to CNN as a combination of "seared steak, raspberries, and rum.

Not a terribly far departure from astronaut Peggy Whitson's recollection in a 2002 CNN interview, where she described the smell of orbit as "hot metal and fried steak."

For astronomy enthusiasts who can’t afford the price tag of a $250,000 Virgin Galactic trip to space , this could be the next best thing.

The four-ounce bottles are starting at $29 and are now available for preorder and are expected to be delivered in October 2020. Each purchase will also include a donation of a bottle to a K-12 school so students can learn about the smell of space.

The company — that's already raised more than $200,000 in contributions — does not have any plans to produce more bottles once the one-off production from the fundraising campaign is complete. However, based on the buzz around Eau de Space, Richardson told the network that Eau de Moon may be on its way.

• Fit the bottom of a metal travel atomizer onto the perfume’s nozzle, and pump the sprayer until the bottle is full.
• Spray perfume with a metal atomizer directly into a plastic travel bottle.
• Put a funnel on a plastic or glass travel bottle to transfer perfume out of a splash bottle.

• The sprayer on your perfume may be metal or plastic depending on the fragrance you have.
• If you have trouble pulling the sprayer off, wrap it in a paper towel and grip it with a pair of pliers.
• Metal travel atomizers can’t be refilled from a splash bottle without a sprayer.

• If you don’t see an opening on the bottom of your travel bottle, carefully slide the metal casing off to expose the opening.
• A typical travel perfume bottle holds 50 full sprays or about 0.13 fluid ounces (3.8 ml).

• A bit of perfume may spray out when you put the sprayer back on, so point the bottle toward a sink so it doesn’t get into your eyes.
• It’s normal if your travel bottle doesn’t spray perfume for the first few pumps after you fill it. The first few pumps remove the air from the bottle before it starts spraying perfume.

• Leave at least 1 ⁄ 4  in (0.64 cm) of space at the top of your travel bottle so you can easily replace the sprayer.
• Put a small funnel in the mouth of the travel bottle to help catch all of the perfume so it doesn’t make a mess.
• Alternatively, take the sprayer off of the main perfume bottle and fit a plastic syringe over the nozzle. Press down on the nozzle and pull the syringe plunger up to pull out the fragrance.
