Rome Walking Tour Map

Rome is an easy city to get lost in. Street names aren’t always marked, especially at intersections where you might expect them to be.

To help you navigate, I’ve created a custom Google Map with all of the stops clearly marked.

You can access the custom map HERE . To access via mobile, click on the link while using your mobile device.

Note: You’ll need an internet connection if you choose to navigate using the custom Google Map.

Gelato, Italian ice cream counter

It’s up to you. The tour works well for one, two, or more. Almost all of the tastings can be enjoyed standing so you won’t need to worry about finding a table.

Most of the places you’ll be stopping at are quite small and, depending on the time of year, may be crowded. Expect to queue during busy times, and if you’re doing the tour as a family or group, it’s possible you may have to take turns going inside to order.

For most food stops, I’ve included suggestions of what to eat or drink, along with a price estimate. The majority are small bites that, together, add up to a very filling meal, but depending on your appetite, dietary preferences, and the size of your group, you may want to taste something different.

Most stops have something suitable for vegetarians, as well as a gluten-free choice.

Be sure to bring along some cash since not all of the businesses accept cards. If you follow the suggesting tastings, you can expect to spend about 14 € on food and drink.

You do not have to tip in restaurants in Rome. Or anywhere in Italy for that matter. (If the word servizio appears on your bill, you are already being charged extra for service.)

If you still feel compelled to tip, I get it. Old habits die hard. I just round up to the nearest euro.

On the Street

Feel free to fill your water bottle at any of the 2,500 drinking fountains scattered around the city. The water is cool, clean, refreshing, and perfectly safe to drink.

Be aware that eating and drinking are not allowed within 10 ft of any monument in the old center. (That includes the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain) Violators can be fined up to 500€.

camera icon

The tour begins at Piazza della Rotonda where you’ll find one of Rome’s best-preserved buildings – the Pantheon.

Try and picture the piazza as it looked a few hundred years ago when a busy fish market was held around the fountain. Head over to the entrance to the Pantheon and look for the holes in the portico columns. They once held poles that supported the awnings for the fish market stands.

If you haven’t already, pop inside the Pantheon and have a look around (2€ entry fee). The interior, with its magnificent dome, is Rome’s greatest architectural wonder. Walk to the center of the room, stand under the oculus, and gaze up at the sky.

Piazza di S. Eustachio, 82, 00186 Roma

Open 7 days a week

Mon – Thurs, Sun 7:30 am – 1:00 am Late Fri until 1:30 am and Sat until 2:00 am Closed Aug 15 & Dec 25

Il Gran Caffe 2.90€ Aragostine Pastry 1.20€

Decaf is also an option

Sidewalk cafe with tourists in square in Rome a sunny summer day

For a genuine Roman coffee in a historic setting, Sant’Eustachio is hard to beat. They’ve been producing great coffee here since the 1930s and have developed something of a cult following. The reason is that they roast the beans over wood in the back of the shop, then blend them with water from an ancient Roman aqueduct. Each shot of espresso is pulled behind a metal partition so the secret to their extra-thick, luscious crema remains a mystery.

When you enter the shop, the pastry counter and register are on your right. Pay at the register, then take your pastry and your receipt over to the bar. (If it’s busy, try placing your receipt on the counter with a 50 cent tip on top. When the barista looks over and sees 2 or 3 receipts on the counter, and only one has a tip, chances are you’ll get served first.) Sugar is added to the coffee beforehand so make sure that you ask for senza zucchero (no sugar) BEFORE ordering if you don’t want any.

A caffè is a single shot of espresso, a cappuccino is a shot of espresso topped with half steamed milk and half foam, and a latte is a glass full of milk. Their signature coffee, il gran caffe, is a larger espresso that is extra rich and creamy, even though it has no milk in it.

If you sit down to eat, the price increases by 2.50€ per person, so enjoy your caffè and pastry standing up, like a local.

To angelo feroci

You won’t be tasting anything here. Instead, this stop is a visual feast that will whet your appetite for the delicious bites waiting for you up ahead.

free walking tour roma

Dating back to the 1890’s, Angelo Feroci is the most beautiful, and the most expensive, butcher shop in all of Rome.

The founder, Angelo, was recognized for his butchering skills back in the day when he received a gold medal at the international exhibition in London in 1924, as well as at the international fair of Rome.

Take a minute or two before you enter this historic temple of fine food to check out the tantalizing display of lamb chops, steaks, and meatballs in the shop window. The inside of the store is ultra-luxe with marble-on-marble countertops and benches, a mosaic floor in black and white Carrera marble, a huge black bull mounted high on the wall, and a clientele that looks like they just stepped out of an Italian fashion magazine.

A gruesome-looking pig’s head sits atop the main display counter. Don’t be afraid to get closer so you can admire the exceptional meat products below, including house specialties like plump stuffed chicken legs and strips of veal dressed with pine nuts and deep purple radicchio.

A second display counter on your left houses platters of prepared dishes and vegetables like Carciofi alla Giudia – whole artichokes with just the outer leaves and the inner hairy choke removed, then deep-fried in olive oil until crisp and golden. Deliziosissimo!

If you’re staying in an Airbnb, circle back here after the tour and pick up something amazing for dinner. While the food is definitely on the expensive side, the quality is second to none.

Via della Maddalena, 12 00186 Roma

Espresso: A Free Walking Tour of Rome for Food Lover's (Self-Guided)

Lindt opened their flagship store in Rome in 2013, and ever since, tourists and locals alike have been coming here to indulge in this Swiss chocolatier’s fine quality chocolate.

Enter the store and breathe in the intoxicating aroma. Mmmmmmmmm. Chocolate heaven. Now, look around. In the front section, you’ll see a coffee bar offering a variety of chocolate-based coffee drinks, decadent opera cakes, crepes filled with chocolate, delicious gelato, and the most amazing affogato (vanilla gelato with a shot of espresso) you’ll ever taste. Even the spoons here are dipped in chocolate.

At the back of the store, there are huge displays of chocolate bars and bins overflowing with irresistibly smooth Lindor truffles that you can mix and match. The selection is incredible and includes many flavors not available in North America. There is usually a friendly employee offering free samples, but if not, buy one or two flavors you’ve never tried before. You deserve it.

There’s also a cozy Saletta Choco-Relax downstairs where you can sit and relax. (That’s also where you’ll find the washroom.)

Tasting chocolate is a bit like tasting wine, with a recommended order of progression. If you’re tasting more than one kind, begin with the chocolate with the least percentage of cocoa. Start with white chocolate, then milk chocolate, and finally, dark chocolate. And be sure to let it melt slowly in your mouth.

Trevi Fountain, Rome

To La Prosciutteria Roma

Via della Panetteria, 34/A, 00187 Roma

Open 7 days a week 11:30 am – Midnight

Mixed tasting plate (meat, cheese, veggies, bread, and sauces), 5€

Espresso: A Free Walking Tour of Rome for Food Lover's (Self-Guided)

La Prosciutteria sells high-quality, house-made wine and salumi, served on olive-wood boards or between two slices of bread. Their philosophy is simple. Eat incredibly well while spending as little as possible.

The teeny-tiny space is dominated by a meat and cheese counter. Salumi and hind legs of prosciutto hang from the ceiling with small bowls attached underneath to catch any drips. Everything here is sliced to order.

Since La Prosciutteria is not legally a restaurant, there is no table service. Menus can be found on the walls. A self-serve cutlery and water station is located near the back of the room. There is no cover charge and no table charge, and in a city where it costs two or three euros to sit down and eat, that’s a pleasure to find.

Salumi (salted meats) are an Italian staple. While most American cold cuts are cooked, in Italy they are far more commonly cured by air-drying, salting, and smoking. The two most familiar types of salumi are salame and prosciutto. Salame is an air-dried, sometimes spicy sausage that comes in many varieties. Prosciutto is a dry-cured ham made from raw legs of pig (preferably female) that can be either dolce (sweet) or salato (salty). Purists say the best is prosciutto Di Parma. Ask the friendly staff to include a few different varieties when they put together your tasting plate. You’ll be amazed at how different each type of prosciutto tastes.

There are only a handful of tables inside so try to avoid arriving during peak hours (between noon and 1:00 pm, or 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm). If the line is long, grab a delicious porchetta panini to go instead. Eat it standing, just outside the shop. In Rome, only tourists walk around eating their food.

To Il Gelato di San Crispino

Via della Panetteria, 42, 00187 Roma

Open 7 days a week Sunday – Thursday, 11:00 am – 12:30 am Friday & Saturday, 11:0 am – 1:30 am Fall/Winter closed on Tuesdays

Try the signature San Crispino flavor (with bitter honey from Sardinia). 2.70€ for a small cup

Rome, Italy - August 18, 2016: Sidewalk cafe with tourists in square in Rome a sunny summer day

ll Gelato di San Crispino serves what many consider to be the best gelato in Rome – some say in the world.

At San Crispino, they use only top-notch, all-natural ingredients from Italy. Their zabaione gelato, for example, is made with De Bartoli Marsala that’s been aged for 20 years. Likewise, their licorice flavor is made with licorice root from Calabria, lemon with IGP lemons from the Amalfi Coast, and pistachio with pistachio nuts that come from the town of Bronte in Sicily. In a city chockablock with gelaterias, it’s high-quality regional ingredients like these, along with the absence of artificial colorings, preservatives, and chemical emulsifiers, that really set them apart.

San Crispino keeps the flavors of the day in metal tubs covered with shiny lids. Gourmet flavors like ginger-cinnamon, chocolate rum, armagnac, and fresh walnut with dried figs make it hard to pick just one. By the way, there are no cones at San Crispino. You also won’t find any sauces, toppings, or sprinkles. The emphasis here is on serving gelato in its purest form, in a paper coppetta (cup).

For Italians, gelato is much more than a sweet treat. It’s an essential part of daily life, and they are as loyal to their gelato shops as they are to their soccer teams. When it comes to choosing a flavor, locals don’t ask for samples. They pick one and commit. And if the person behind the counter asks con panna (with cream), their answer is always yes.

There’s also a branch at the Fiumicino Airport (Terminal 1) so you can get one last gelato fix before you go!

(Movie buffs might recognize Il Gelato di San Crispino from its cameo in Eat, Pray, Love.)

where to stay in rome

The Inn at the Spanish Steps

00185 Roma, Italy Tel. +39 06 69925657

I chose to stay at The Inn at the Spanish Steps mostly because of its location – right above the luxury shops on Via Dei Condotti and literally steps from the famous Spanish Steps. It was exactly where I wanted to be!

While not a 5-star, the service is remarkably good at this luxury boutique hotel. And it has the character and quirks (like a vintage lift) I’ve come to expect from properties associated with Small Luxury Hotels of the World. It also has a lovely rooftop terrace perfect for enjoying an aperitivo after a long day of sightseeing.

Bonus:  the oldest cafe in Rome, the Antico Caffe Greco is right next door! A latte will set you back about 9 euro but consider it the price of admission to a Roman institution.

The Rome Food Tour – Unlimited Food & Free-Flowing Fine Wine (Barolo)  will leave you skipping the tourist traps and take you right into the heart of the best local eats and hidden gems that Rome has to offer!

Whether it’s your first or fiftieth time in the city, I feel like you’d be missing out by not taking this experience! I’d been to Rome before this, but after taking this tour I realized just how much I’d been missing out on  real  Italian cuisine!

I was going to all the “best-rated” Italian places in the area, but they were all the typical touristy spots that charge you an arm and a leg for dishes that taste pretty similar to what I could get at the Olive Garden.

With this guided food tour, we met up with our guide near the Cipra metro station where we were able to explore the area and sample over 20 different foods!

Expand To See More See Less

At La Nicchia Cafe, we were able to try the Mozzarella di Bufala campana, tons of tasty prosecco, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, balsamic, and so much more!

My personal favorite was the Ricotta with white truffle-infused honey which was creamy, sweet, and savory.

Bonci Pizzarium is owned by the “Michelangelo of Pizza”, and was recommended by countless food icons, including the legendary Anthony Bourdain!

With nearly 100 different combinations, you’ll get to try pizzas you haven’t even thought of before! La Tradizione is the place to go for cheeses and cured meats paired with amazing fine wines, and Il Segreto near the Vatican provides on-point, al dente pasta with even more wine!

  • Departure: Piazza S. Bartolomeo All’Isola, 22, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 4:00 PM
  • Includes:  13 samples at 7 different tasting locations, Wine, beer and water, Local English-speaking guide, Rome – A food lover’s guide

This next tour is actually the first tour of Trastevere, and with their expertise and vast knowledge, it’s obvious they have over a decade of experience under their belt.

The Rome Twilight Trastevere Food Tour with Eating Europe  is more focused on quality over quantity, so you won’t get to try as many different types of foods.

However, the ones you  do  try are made to be savored and not rushed, and are well worth the time spent enjoying and learning about.

Trastevere is a lively neighborhood known for its nightlife, beautiful architecture, and is also one of the best “foodie” neighborhoods in Rome. However, with this tour you’ll be receiving VIP access to some of the area’s trendiest, most well-reputed food institutions.

Start off the tour by meeting up with your guide and learn some insider tips into the best types of dishes found in this area and what to look out for.

We met up at the Isola Tiberina, where we walked together with our guide and the rest of our group across the Ponte Cestio, crossing the river to Trastevere.

The first stop of the day was at Via dei Vascellari, where we kicked things off with a toast with DOC prosecco and plenty of traditional Roman dishes at Da Enzo al 29. It’s been serving Romans for nearly 100 years and is by far the most well-known trattoria in the entire city.

I loved trying delicious homemade cookies at the famous Via della Luce, followed by the amazing roast pork and beer at the Via Natale del Grande.

The supplí was phenomenal, along with the various pasta dishes and gelato after exploring the area. We even learned how gourmet gelato came to Roma, and the differences between “real” and “fake” gelato!

3. the award-winning private food tour of rome: 6 or 10 tastings.

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure:  Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Departure Time: Between 12:00 to 7:00 PM
  • Includes:  Private Personalized Tour, local guide, 6 or 10 food & drinks tastings of high-quality local products – depends on option booked, vegetarian alternatives available, only you and your guide, carbon neutral tour organized by a B-Corp certified company

I find that this tour works well for anyone, no matter your age, background, or knowledge of Roman dishes. The Award-Winning Private Food Tour of Rome: 6 or 10 Tastings  is perfect for first-time visitors who are not only interested in the food scene, but Rome’s history.

If you’d like to learn about local culture more in-depth than what most Rome tours offer, you’re in the right place. I really like the fact that even though it isn’t a particularly lengthy tour, they even come and pick you up from your hotel.

This is a huge weight off my shoulders, especially when I’m traveling in a foreign country and don’t know how to get around very well, yet. This casual strolling tour perfectly showed off authentic Roman culture, providing me with a perspective I hadn’t seen of this city before.

I’ve always felt like food is a very personal thing, so it made sense to take a private culinary tour with a local foodie who took us to various stops to sample dishes.

We met our guide at Campo de’ Fiori where we started things off with a quick tour of the square, which was exemplary of Rome’s outdoor market traditions.

We then headed to Ponte Sisto, which crosses over the river Tiber and offers beautiful views of the city on the way to Trastevere.

Once in Trastevere – one of the biggest foodie neighborhoods in Rome – we went through and tried some classics like buffalo mozzarella and gelato. After that, we checked out Palazzo Farnese, where we learned about and tried various dishes and drinks.

After all that, we all laughed and chatted while making our way to the Chiesa di Santa Margherita Catholic church, admiring the beautiful 12th-century mosaics and opulent interior.

4. Small-Group Rome Food Tour: Trastevere Campo Fiori Jewish Ghetto

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Departure: Via Dei Baullari, 106, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM, 5:00 PM
  • Includes:  Morning & Evening: 15 samples in 5 locations with with pasta & local fried (VIP restaurant entrance), 3 quality wine tastings at different spots, English-speaking local guide, best restaurants guidebook & cookbook for free, Campo de Fiori Market tour in morning departure

How does a small-group setting while venturing through the best architecture, food, and culture Rome has to offer sound?

You’ll get to experience all that and more with the Small-Group Rome Food Tour: Trastevere Campo Fiori Jewish Ghetto ! I find this tour to be the perfect date-night activity and a great alternative to going out to a nice restaurant!

The tour clocks in at around 4 hours, but I appreciate that they offer both morning and afternoon tour start times to make it easier to fit into busy schedules. Regardless of the start time you choose, though, I highly recommend arriving very hungry as you’ll be trying a lot!

However, I’d even be willing to recommend this selection if you or someone else in your party is a big history buff, as our guide covered a lot.

We started things off in Piazza Farnese, where we met with our guide and headed towards the first stop in Campo de’ Fiori which is known for its legendary outdoor food market.

This is the best place to get fresh vegetables, meats, and cheeses. We were able to purchase items (if we wanted), meet some vendors, try samples of various foods, and soak in the culture of doing “grocery shopping” here.

We then arrived in Trastevere, which is incredibly charming thanks to its cobblestone streets, beautiful homes, and some of the most delectable restaurants and cafes in the world.

Our guide led the way through some of the most well-kept secrets that I’d probably never have tried, otherwise.

Getting to see the Jewish Quarter was enriching, learning about the unique history of this neighborhood while trying delicacies like supplí, fried artichokes, codfish, and much more.

5. Food & Wine Tour by the Vatican City

  • Departure: La Nicchia Cafe, Via Cipro, 4L, 00136 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: Between 4:30 to 7:30 PM
  • Includes:  Food tasting, Wine tasting, Snacks, Bottled water, Alcoholic Beverages

I’ll admit that food isn’t one of the first things that come to mind when I think of Vatican City. However, I was surprised that the surrounding neighborhoods of Prati and Trionfale are filled with amazing wine and cuisine selections.

The Food & Wine Tour by the Vatican City  is perfect for any age, background, and food preference – even offering substitutions for just about any allergies and food restrictions!

If you’re already planning on going to see the Vatican Museums, this culinary tour is a must-do! We started our tour by meeting our guide at La Nicchia Cafe, which is known for whipping up some of the finest Roman dishes and drinks!

We definitely started things off right, with a 30-year aged balsamic vinegar drizzled over Parmigiano Reggiano, along with truffles, buffalo mozzarella, and DOCG Frascati superior wine.

By this point, I trusted my guide to take me pretty much anywhere, displaying her vast knowledge on all things “Rome” and “Roman food”, along with being fun and very personable.

Our next stop was the Ristorante Pizzeria Falcone, where we were able to try typical Roman pizza (not shy of any kind of sauces, veggies, proteins, cheeses, etc.). I was very intrigued at just how different it was from Neopolitan pizza, but I was very much a fan!

After this, we went to Bonci Pizzarium, which is known as Rome’s #1 pizza and offers a massive selection of different types of – you guessed it: pizza.

Our last stop of the day was at the Hostaria Dino e Tony, where we reveled in handmade pasta dishes and tiramisu, washed down by some of the most delicious wine I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying.

Overall, this was an amazing tour right from the very beginning, with plenty of fun stories to keep us engaged throughout!

6. The Roman Food Tour including Visit to the Trionfale Food Market

  • Departure:  Via Cipro, 4L, 00136 Roma RM, Italy
  • Departure Time: 10:45 AM
  • Includes:  Food tasting, wine tasting, tour escort/host

If I were just in Rome for 1 day and I wanted to try as many Roman dishes as possible, I’d probably take this next tour. The Roman Food Tour including Visit to the Trionfale Food Market is the perfect balance between entertainment, history, architecture, and of course, food.

We were able to try nearly 20 different types of dishes, and while that may sound like a ton of food, was digested quite easily thanks to us strolling around in between each stop!

Our tour started off in the morning, which was quite a bit different from any of the other food tours in Rome that I’d taken! This made it easier to schedule into a busy itinerary, as people seem to always have plans in the evening over morning.

It made sense then that after meeting our guide at Venue La Nicchia Cafe, we started things off by trying a typical Roman breakfast!

I briefly explained La Nicchia Cafe up above, but this is the place to go if you’re interested in tasting aged balsamic, truffles, Genovese pesto, buffalo mozzarella, and some of the finest wine.

After this, we strolled on over to the Bonci Pizzarium, which is listed at the number one pizzeria in Rome – which is really saying something if you know about Romans’ passion for pizza!

At Bonci Pizzarium, you’ll see and get to sample pizzas you literally won’t see anywhere else in the world! After this, head to the Mercato Trionfale and learn about this local market and how everything operates.

Al Giardino Del Gatto e La Volpe Srl is one of the most well-respected, family-owned restaurants known for homemade pasta with fine wine (and they definitely delivered!). To follow all those “salty” dishes up, what better way to celebrate a great day than with some artisanal gelato?!

7. Rome Walking Food Tour With Secret Food Tours

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: Piazza Navona, 14, 00186 Roma RM
  • Departure Time: 10:30 or 11:30 AM
  • Includes:  3 types of homemade pizza, fried risotto balls (supplí), Italian cheeses, cannoli, artisanal gelato, 2 types of Roman pastas, the Secret Dish, espresso/cappuccino, finest Italian wines, water, non-alcoholic drinks

Last but certainly not least, I bring you the shortest tour of its kind! The Rome Walking Food Tour with Secret Food Tours was simply a blast, and while it only lasts 2.4 hours, really packs a punch!

It’s a fantastic way to get to try true Roman fare while venturing through the city’s most unique districts, complete with breathtaking architecture, rich culture, and friendly locals.

While this tour doesn’t include a complimentary hotel pickup, our meetup point at Campo de’ Fiori next to Piazza Navona in Rome was very conveniently located. We then asked our guide some questions, got acquainted, and set off to the Jewish ghetto established in 1555.

Learning about the Roman/Jewish ghetto was quite striking, though it was surprisingly established in 555 in Rione Sant’Angelo.

We got to see so many unique and hidden places in Rome, thanks to our expert guide leading the way. She did so in a way that made me trust her, and her energy and passion for Rome were contagious and set a great mood for the entire group.

You can opt to take a small tour or a private tour, and with the private tour, you get a ton of input into your preferences and receive a more customized experience.

Our foodie guide led us through Trastevere, the Jewish Ghetto, and Campo de’ Fiori, which surprisingly all had very different vibes and food dishes. We tried fresh pizzas and pastas, cold meats, tons of cheese, and supplí which I can’t get enough of.

To follow it up, we had a little “dessert” of a tasty cappuccino and creamy gelato! If you want to learn more about Rome’s multilayered history, make sure to add this tour to your list!

FREE ROME FOOD TOURS

Currently, there is only one company offering free food tours in Rome, and they focus on three neighbourhoods in the city: the Jewish Ghetto, Trastevere, and Monti.

Free Rome Food Tours

Each of these outings includes at least 3-4 stops at great restaurants and food shops where you’ll find some of the best dishes in the city.

The foods you will try on these tours vary quite a bit depending on which neighbourhood they cover, but most outings will cover some of the following options:

  • Parmigiano Reggiano

Although you don’t have to pay for the tour, you will have to pay for any food you might purchase along the way, and you should expect to spend around €10-€15 on average.

The nice thing is that even if you tip them another €10-€15 for the tour, you’ll still spend significantly less on this than you typically would on a paid Rome food tour.

In addition to their free walking tours, this company also provides 2-hour pay-what-you-wish food tours which allow you to pick and choose the dishes you will try.

Their Trastevere food tour is offered on both Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 am.

Paid Rome Food Tours

If you’re looking for a different kind of food tour or one that covers another area of the city, there are several paid options to choose from.

Ticket prices range from €40-€100 and some services offer small or private tour groups so that you’ll get the full attention of your guide.

Some people may feel like they are in one of the largest outdoor museums in the world because of its multitude of churches, squares, monuments, and amazing fountains along with its Mediterranean cuisine that embodies the local flavors. Getting to know this city with the help of a local guide will aid you in discovering all those mandatory stops to visit and some of the lesser-known gems this amazing city has to offer.

There are guided visits in Rome which focus on the Sistine Chapel, Castel Sant’Angelo, the stairway to the Spanish Square, the Villa Borghese, the Trastevere, the People’s Square, (Piazza del Pópolo) and even the interesting street culture at the Campo de' Fiori Square. Rome Pizza-Making Class & Dinner in Trastevere

If you think you could never learn how to make pizza, think again. We recently joined an exciting pizza-making class in Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood and went back home with the basics to make our own treat.

After kneading, stretching, kneading, and stretching some more, we were ready to top our pizza with what we liked most, whether it was tomato and mozzarella cheese for a perfect Margherita, cold cuts such as prosciutto cotto ham or sausage, olives, mushrooms, or rocket salad with Parmigiano.

Thank you, Luca, for the fantastic food tour of Testaccio. Beginning at L'Oasi della Birra, we hit a well-curated selection of food and sites in the neighborhood. Although it was hot outside, the walks between each place were short, and all the stops were organized.

My husband and I had a great experience on this tour. Our guide Chiara was so knowledgable, engaging and fun. She made the tour that much more enjoyable. We had amazing food and really got a good sense of the local scene. Testaccio is not touristy, so you really felt you were experiencing what the locals do. Chiara also provided us with a great list of restaurant recommendations as well. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Rome who loves food!

A friend of ours recommended Eating Europe's Trastevere Twilight Food Tour. They raved about it so we had high expectations. They were met and then some on our tour. Our tour guide Giorgia was fun, knowledgeable, and engaging and guided us through this fascinating and delicious tour. We made about 5 stops and enjoyed truly unique food and wine at each location. Though we arrived at the tour a bit drained from a long day of touring, all of that was forgotten by the time we reached our first stop and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the tour. Can’t recommend this tour enough!

Val was the most amazing guide! She was knowledgeable and charismatic. I felt immersed in Italian culture and welcomed. I learned a lot of history about food and wine and Val was so friendly and sincere. She was considerate of my elderly grandparents who were also walking with the group and fun and lively at the same time. This was the highlight of my trip to Italy and I would recommend this tour to everyone.

Jacy B

Spectacular! Our guide, Ariana was an absolute joy!! Highly, highly recommend the market tour/tasting and pasta making and eating adventure when in Rome! Tasting our way through food vendors in the Trastevere neighborhood, learning about food choices and how to make pasta was such a wonderful way to learn about daily gastronomic life in Rome/Italy. Our 10-year old daughter loved it - come hungry!!

Dr. Lena Edwards

EXCELLENT experience! BETTER than expected. Luca was an exceptional guide...very knowledgeable and a GREAT sense of humor. Not only did we learn about the food, we also learned a lot about Rome, and specifically the Testaccio area of the city.

Thank you, Luca, for the fantastic food tour of Testaccio. Beginning at L'Oasi della Birra, we hit a well-curated selection of food and sites in the neighborhood. Although it was hot outside, the walks between each place were short, and all the stops were organized. We opted for the addon for a few extra drinks, which was fun. I'll be sure to look into anything the tour company does in future visits to Rome and Europe!

Unbelievable tour with Luca, this guy knows his history and on top of that does it all with a comical flair . The food was plentiful and delicious! We started with artichokes and burrata then pasta then porchetta then a risotto ball then pizza then biscotti and Italian custard and I forgot wine and beer !! The tour In itself was worth every penny but Luca made this an unforgettable experience !!!

This tour was amazing. Valter was an awesome, funny, very knowledgeable guide. We learned so much about Roman food and the history of the places we visited. Each place was special in its own way and we got to enjoy authentic foods, and we visited the beautiful Santa Maria Church. This was a perfect ending to our trip. Definitely reccomend it. Thank you Valter ♥️

Katherine Horn

We had the most wonderful tour with Valentina!!! She was incredible. We stopped at authentic Italian food including appetizers, wine, pasta, Italian sandwiches and popular snacks as well as a variety of pasta dishes and gelato. Val was engaging and enjoyable. We and learned a lot about Italian cuisine and culture. It was an experience I will never forget.

Charles Mann

This is a wonderful tour! We learned much about the foods of Rome. Things about the culture and made friends along the way. I would highly recommend this tour. I only wished we did it earlier on our trip.

Harriet Resnick

We had a lovely evening with Emma as our guide. The places she took us were intimate and authentic- exactly what we were looking for in this tour. These were places local families own and where locals go. Emma was knowledgeable, friendly, funny, and spoke perfect English. She really connected with our family, making the evening even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone coming to Rome.

Devyn Dodge

Oh man! Francesca was amazing! She gave us a tour of some fantastic restaurants. Not only did we have good food, but she showed us little treasures throughout Trastevere. An underground wine cellar, fantastic cheeses and meats, and more than welcoming restaurant owners. Our tour group consisted of people from around around, so sharing stories and experiences was great to listen to. Top marks all around! We ended our tour off with some "Vitamin G" and I recommend trying the pear.

Vicki Sykora

Luca was amazing!! The best tour guide and tour we have done. We have done several in Europe. The food and hospitality were outstanding. We had a wonderful time. Luca remembered all 10 of our names after only being told once. I would give 100 stars if I could.

Nicholas M

This was the best food tour I have done! Fabio was an amazing tour guide, and the food we had was delicious. My wife and I have been of many food/drink tours in the past, but this one was the best. The amount of food and drinks we had were almost TOO much, and again, Fabio really elevated the experience to another level. 10/10 Recommend!

Anthony M

Is It Worth Doing a Food Tour in Rome?

Creamy gelato is often included on most food tours in Rome Italy

A food tour in Rome is absolutely worth doing ! Not only does it allow you to try authentic Italian food with a local if you’re short on time, but it also gives you a better understanding of the culture and history behind each dish.

Plus, it’s an excellent way to explore different areas of the city that you may not have otherwise visited! These tours are curated to introduce you to a variety of flavors, from classic dishes to local secrets, and are well worth the time and cost investment!

What is Famous in Rome as Far as Food?

Perhaps the most celebrated is pasta carbonara, a simple yet indulgent dish featuring eggs, Pecorino Romano cheese, cured pork, and black pepper. Equally renowned are Roman pizzas, particularly Pizza Bianca—a focaccia-style pizza that’s crispy on the outside and soft in the center.

Not to be missed are the succulent Saltimbocca alla Romana, veal cutlets wrapped in prosciutto and sage, and the delectable supplì, fried rice balls oozing with mozzarella. These dishes, along with artichokes alla Romana and cacio e pepe, among others, comprise the essence of Rome’s storied gastronomy.

What are the Best Foods to Eat in Rome?

free food tours in rome

When dining in Rome, it’s essential to indulge in the city’s signature dishes to truly experience its culinary culture. Some must-eat foods include:

  • Cacio e Pepe: A minimalist yet mouthwatering pasta dish that perfectly balances the sharpness of Pecorino Romano with the bite of freshly cracked black pepper.
  • Roman Artichokes (Carciofi alla Romana): These artichokes are braised with herbs and olive oil until they are tender and packed with flavor.
  • Maritozzi: Delicately sweet buns filled with whipped cream, a classic Roman breakfast treat.
  • Gelato: No visit to Rome is complete without sampling the rich, creamy goodness of authentic Italian gelato in a myriad of flavors.
  • Tiramisu: This iconic Italian dessert, made with layer upon layer of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and mascarpone cheese, is a sweet ending to any meal.

These foods represent a small fraction of Rome’s amazing cuisine, which is exactly why a food tour that provides you the opportunity to sample a lot of dishes instead of having to pay for full plates everywhere you go is such a great deal!

What is the Best Rome Food Tour?

The best food tour in Rome is undoubtedly the Rome Twilight Trastevere Food Tour with Eating Europe tour. This comprehensive 4-hour tour takes you through the charming Trastevere neighborhood where you’ll get to sample local foods like pizza, pasta, cured meats, and cheese while learning about the history of each dish and the city itself.

Do You Tip on Meals in Rome?

free food tours in rome

Tipping is not mandatory in Rome, nor is it expected since the waitstaff do not rely on tips as a source of their wages . However, if you receive great service, you will notice that many people will round the bill up or leave a couple of euros on the table. It’s the polite thing to do, and we always do it.

Contrary to the United States where 15-20% gratuity is often expected since waitstaff are constantly waiting on you, Italians don’t typically leave a tip since their job is complete once they’ve delivered your beverage and meal.

It’s normal to have to wave down someone to pay your bill, so keep this in mind when dining in Rome.

What Should I Bring on a Roman Food Tour?

When attending a food tour, it’s a good idea to come prepared with the following items:

  • Comfortable shoes: You’ll be walking a lot and Rome’s streets are less-than-ideal for heels, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
  • Sun protection: Rome can get very hot and is often sunny in the summer months, so bring along sunscreen and a hat or sunglasses.
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial when exploring a new city, and many food tours will offer water, but it’s always best to bring your own refillable bottle (this LifeStraw Bottle is my favorite and always comes with me!)
  • Cash for tipping: It’s not required to tip on food tours in Rome, but if your guide provides you with a great time then having some cash on hand to show your appreciation can be a kind gesture.
  • An empty stomach: Make sure not to eat too much before the tour since you’ll want to leave room to try all the delicious dishes!

Do Rome Food Tours Include Wine Tastings?

Some of the best food tours in Rome Italy include wine tastings

Many food tours in Rome, Italy understand the importance of how a fine wine complements the culinary experience of Italian cuisine, and thus quite a few include tastings of select local wines.

However, not all tours include a wine tour as well, so if this is something you’re interested in then be sure to check out The Roman Food Tour in Trastevere with Free-Flowing Fine Wine !

How Long Are Food Tours in Rome Italy?

Most food tours in Rome last between 3-4 hours, depending on the tour you choose . Some may be longer or shorter, but this is generally enough time to experience a variety of dishes and explore different neighborhoods in the city.

Be prepared for plenty of walking and stopping at multiple restaurants, markets, and shops along the way! Overall, it’s a fun and delicious way to spend an afternoon or evening.

How Much Do Rome Food Tours Cost?

On average, Roman food tours can range from $50-$140 per person , although this varies depending on the type of tour, the number of tastings included, and any additional experiences or extras offered.

While it may seem expensive at first glance, keep in mind that a food tour typically includes multiple meals spread out over a few hours, so it’s actually a great value since you’ll get to taste between 5 to 10 different dishes that would otherwise cost between 15-30 euros each!

We did the afternoon free walking tour (English group). The tour guide was very good, starting at Spanish steps, continuing to Trevi Fountain, then to Venezia square and through the Roman Forum to finally reach the Colosseum. The tour lasted 2h and it was a pleasure to hear some interesting stories that we could not read in our guide books. We were with our 9 years old child and the tour was not exhausting.

The free walking tour is a great way to be introduced to the city. The guide, Laura, was very kind, open and she knows a lot. She could tell funny details that you couldn't read in any guide book, and she was great at interacting with all the people in the group. I highly recommend to go on a tour with her.

We took the morning tour with Alessandra and cannot praise her enough. A very professional, friendly and informative guide, who clearly loves the city she lives in. She offered the right amount of information to keep us engaged through to the end of the tour, despite the rain. Good coverage of the main sights. Highly recommended.

We did both the morning and afternoon tours. Would highly recommend both. Our tour guides Fabio and Sylvia were brilliant. Fabio has photos to accompany his information. The information was brilliant! I would do these at the start of your trip to understand the city more!

Taste of Testaccio: The Perfect Gluten Free Food Tour in Rome

by Crazy Travelista | Jun 9, 2016 | Gluten-Free Travel , Italy , Reviews | 6 comments

Taste of Testaccio: The Perfect Gluten Free Food Tour in Rome

My favorite part of traveling is trying new foods, without a doubt.  What better way to appreciate a culture than to indulge in the local foods, right? Italian culture is centered around food. It brings family and friends together and eating is a sacred social activity (as it should be!). Hey, Italy is my favorite country in the entire world for a reason!

As someone who is allergic to gluten, traveling on a strict gluten free (GF) diet isn’t the easiest thing and it takes much more research and planning to have a safe dining experience. So when I found a gluten free food tour in Rome, offered by Eating Italy, I JUMPED on it! Ahh, finally!  I decided on the Taste of Testaccio Tour with Eating Italy because I have never been to that neighbourhood but have always heard good things about it. It’s a local, colorful, and hip neighbourhood in Rome and it deserves more attention than it receives. I also learned that Testaccio is considered the birthplace of Roman cuisine ! Umm, sign me up please! ♥

If you’re like me and are skeptical about forking out cash for a food tour, you will be pleasantly surprised. The food tour hits up 8 STOPS (and 12 tastings total), so make sure you skip breakfast. You will be STUFFED by the end of the 4-hour tour, guaranteed! My tour was from 10:30am-2:30pm, and it filled me up for the entire day. I only needed a light snack around 9pm, but it’s basically breakfast lunch and dinner crammed into 4 hours of yummy goodness.

(note: this food tour isn’t only for those who are gluten free and is open to everyone. However, it can be specifically tailored to those with food allergies, which is what they did with me).

So What Does a Gluten Free Food Tour in Rome Look like? Here are the highlights below!

1st stop→ pastry shopping.

Eating Italy

Rich & sweet GF chocolate fudge tart

Breakfast of champions…the non Gf version below.

Eating Italy Pastries

I’ll take one of each, please 🙂

2nd Stop→Pizza, pizza, pizza (& rice)

Eating Italy Pizza

There’s nothing like a local pizza spot in Rome. My eyes were bulging out of my head. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a GF option and I was offered a rice dish instead (boo!). The rice was tasty, but it’s not the same. So instead, I just lived vicariously through my pizza devouring tour members.

3rd Stop→Salumeria

EatingItalySalami

Next stop was a cute salumeria where we were offered salami, prosciutto, and cheeses. The prosciutto was delicate, tasty and tender. The highlight was the buttery truffle cheese, an absolutely amazing surprise! I usually hate truffles (I know, blasphemous right?), but this was one of the best cheeses I have ever tried.

Eating Italy Taste of Testaccio Tour

Balsamic vinegar tasting. Tasted like honey to me, SO GOOD!

We had some free time inside to sample and purchase any delicacies we desired. If I wasn’t at the beginning of my trip, I would have stocked up for goodies to take home. Maybe next time!

4th Stop→The Non-Catholic Cemetery for Foreigners in Rome

The Non-Catholic Cemetery for Foreigners in Rome

I know what you’re thinking.. a cemetery visit on a food tour, wtf? But after all that food, it was the perfect break. Not to mention, a very beautiful and peaceful place. If you’re in Rome, I would highly recommend a visit here to get away from the crowds!

The Non-Catholic Cemetery for Foreigners in Rome

5th Stop→Testaccio Covered Market ( with 3 food stops inside the market)

This was my favorite stop on the tour. It was a local market where the shops were passed down from generation to generation and everyone knew each other. It was such a great vibe inside, and not to mention some awesome food!

Taste of Testaccio tour

Nothing like fresh caprese salad. Melted in my mouth!

gluten free food tour in Rome

Clockwise: Bruschetta on GF bread, fresh veggies, GF suppli, GF fried artichoke.

Inside the market, I endulged in:

Food box on Taste of Testaccio Tour

Cute little Food Box shop

  • Bruschetta (pronounced “broo skeyta” NOT “brooshetta”) with a homemade gluten free baguette, soft on the inside and crispy on the edges. They let me take home the entire loaf for later, which was a big plus!
  • Caprese-garnished with the freshest basil and mozarella. The ingredients were so soft and fresh, I didn’t need to chew much.
  • Fried artichoke and wine-the artichoke was a substitute for the bombettos (neck of pork, pecorino, and bacon) the others got to try. Delicious!

Bonus stop: I found a little gluten free shop and got my own suppli (fried risotto and cheese ball) and it was divine! (note: this was not included in the tour and I purchased it on my own).

6th Stop→Sit-Down Restaurant with 3 Pastas & Unlimited Wine

gluten free food tour in Rome

GF pasta substitute with cracked pepper and cheese. Simple yet delicious.

Stretchy pants would have been very helpful at this point in the tour. Just about to tap out but there were 2 more stops! Oh, and did I mention endless wine carafes? ♥

Taste of Testaccio Tour

3 non-GF pastas to choose from

7th Stop→Suppli (fried risotto and cheese balls) at Trapizzino.

gluten free food tour in Rome

Traditional Suppli (fried risotto % cheese). Not GF but they look oh so tasty!

Suppli is a traditional fast food in Rome and costs only about €1. This option was NOT GF so I was offered some pulled marinated chicken. I did get to taste the GF version of suppli in the covered market, so I was satisfied to say the least.

8th Stop→Gelato

Taste of Testaccio Tour

The last stop was for dessert, and what better dessert in Italy than gelato? I finished the whole thing and then I surrendered the flag. I could not physically fit any more food inside my body. I had never been so stuffed in my life.

The Verdict

My first food tour was a success!   I had doubts about not getting enough food but boy was I wrong! It was totally worth it and food tours are going to be my new obsession. I will also say that the tour would not have been as fun without our awesome tour guide Domenico. He had a hippie style, and was whitty, knowledgable, and charismatic. The tour guide really does make or break the tour!

I was surprised at all the GF options and the variety of foods offered. The only disappointment was that they didn’t have GF pizza. Other than that, I give it an A! If you have never done a food tour in Italy, I would definitely give it a try! It was the perfect gluten free food tour in Rome.

*I was a guest of Eating Italy on the Taste of Testaccio Tour. My opinions, however are my own. I don’t bullshit and I LOVED this food tour!

Have you Ever done a Food Tour with Eating Italy? Have you done any other gluten free food tours in Rome? Do tell!

Food Tour in Florence or Rome: Which is Better?

O ne of the first things most people think about when considering a trip to Italy is the food they’ll indulge in. Pasta, pizza, and prosciutto could be its own holy trinity of “P” foods that people look forward to in this well-visited European country. But should you take a food tour in Rome or Florence?

What are the nuisances of cuisine in each city and region? Do you need to choose between the two options, or simply take a food tour in one city or the other to understand Italy and its “Italian” food?

We share details of our experience in both cities, including if you need to do a tour in both locations or just one and what you will taste during each food tour. We’re also sharing our preferred tour operator (spoil alert: it’s Devour Tours ) and a review of the Rome food tour and Florence food tour.

Food tour in rome or florence: the verdict.

We signed up for a food tour in both cities during a trip to Italy, where we traveled from Rome to Florence, then ended our week-long trip in Milan before heading to Madrid, Spain.

We like to understand the food culture as early as possible during our vacation so we know what to order for the rest of the trip (and where to order it because food tour guides always recommend great food spots).

As such, we took a food tour in Rome on our second night there, which was the earliest available time to book during our trip. When we arrived in Florence a couple of days later, we immediately took a Florence food tour on our first night there.

Our verdict is that doing a tour in both cities was the right decision. We were so glad we did a food tour in Rome and a food tour in Florence because we learned wildly different information and experienced how different the food is in both cities through the tours, even though they are not geographically far from each other.

Also, it’s important to know that pizza, which originated in Naples, isn’t a focus of either food tour. So don’t expect to have an array of pizza varieties whatsoever during a Florence or Rome food tour! The tours dig deeper into Rome and Florence’s food culture and food experiences.

We also want to note that no matter the city we visit, if there is a Devour food tour option, we book it. It is our preferred food tour operator because they’re always amazing, including stellar guides, information, and locations. They’re reliable as the “best of the best,” and they support local businesses, which is a cause we can get behind.

Food Tour in Rome vs. Florence: Foods You Will Try

Both tours left us feeling very full! We had plenty to eat and drink on both the Rome Food Tour and the Florence food tour.

An overview of what to expect during a food tour in Rome includes:

  • Local red and white wine, Prosecco, and a cocktail Spritz
  • Cheeses and meats
  • A special Rome street food item called Suppli

During our Rome food tour, two guests included a vegetarian and a non-alcohol drinker. The vegetarian guest was easily accommodated with a veggie option instead of meat. The man who didn’t drink alcohol was always offered an alternative, like a Coke or Fanta, wherever we went when we had wine or a cocktail instead.

Our Florence food tour included:

  • Wine (including local red wine and dessert wine)
  • Bruschettas, including one with a tomato spread and one with a truffle spread
  • Various meats
  • Florentine steak and potatoes
  • Gelato

While some of the foods seem to overlap at a glance, we learned that the regional flavors and selections of the particular wines and cheeses, for example, were different from one tour to another.

As another example, we had meat during both tours. But we only learned about salami made with peppercorns versus salami made with fennel on our Florence tour. Our guide shared the historical importance of the spices for each meat.

Of course, the city and locations were different for our Rome food tour vs. the Florence food tour. In each city, our food guide shared information about the city, overall, and the neighborhood we were in. Naturally, we learned different information about the area in Rome versus Florence.

Devour Food Tours in Italy

As we previously mentioned, Devour is our preferred tour operator for food tours. We are so lucky they have tours in Italy in various cities. They also host tours in places like Paris, France , the United States (including California, Massachusetts, and NYC), and all over Spain .

They believe in supporting locally owned businesses during their food tours, keeping the group size small and intimate.

While the tours can accommodate a variety of allergies and dietary preferences (including for vegetarians), we do not recommend either Italy food tour for vegans. Italy, as a country, has a long way to go for veganism.

Rome Food Tour Review with Devour

We met our guide in the Treverstere neighborhood of Rome. It’s on the side of the Tiber River opposite the Colosseum and Vatican City, where we did the wonderful “ Pristine Sistine ” Walks tour earlier in the day. Walking there or taking a bus to that side of town is very easy if you’re not at a hotel in the neighborhood.

Locals flock to Treverstere to find great food. It is well known for its enotecas (wine bars), cocktail bars, and restaurants.

Our group was small, with just five people. The passion that our guide, Manuela, had for Rome and tourism shined through. She had been a flight attendant for years before pursuing a career as a tour guide in her home city, which she has been doing for about eight years.

Though it was raining, the tour was joyful and upbeat as we bounced around five or so destinations.

Rome Food Tour Food and Drink Locations

Out of respect for the tour, we will not spill the beans on the exact locations we visited. However, we will say that it was very clear that the businesses were all owned by locals who were making an honest living with their quality food and warm hospitality.

A favorite stop was a bar that has been owned by the same man since the 1960s. Marcello was at the register when we stopped by, sitting beneath an old menu sign above him.

The prices were still marked in Italian lira from before Italy joined the European Union. This stop was also a great time to try Campari or Aperol spritzes, an incredibly popular drink amongst Europeans.

Food-wise, it was so interesting to get some “suppli” at one of the most popular places in Rome. We learned that it’s a grab-and-go kind of food similar to arancini in Sicily, but with distinct Roman differences.

During our Devour food tour, eating it on the go was fun, as the Romans do. Dan and I would never have known about this food without the tour, including its history or where to order it.

We happily ate our share as we walked to the next food tour location, an enoteca where we learned about white and red wines and had delicious apertivos.

Book the Same Food Tour in Rome

We loved another food stop where we sat down to try three kinds of pasta local to Rome. They were all amazing! It was fun to sit at a family-owned restaurant and eat the dishes, which were served family-style.

Though we ate one of the two kinds of pasta in Rome the day before, we didn’t understand how it was made until our Rome food tour.

Manuela shared the simple “ingredient rules” that Romans follow when creating pasta dishes at home. She also shared a bit about proteins in the country and what locals consider food for at home and food to order at restaurants.

She explained some of the cultural aspects of eating meals out, including the times Roman Italians dine. It was all very educational.

We discovered that the same restaurant offers Devour cooking classes when a colleague of Manuela’s stopped by to say a quick hello as she walked through the restaurant to the kitchen. She was wearing her Devour cooking apron and was incredibly friendly and smiley!

Florence Food Tour Review with Devour

Our food tour was on the same side of the Arno River where we were staying. It was a 15-minute walk from our Airbnb to our food tour meeting point, on the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens side of town.

It’s a short walk across the river over the Ponte Vecchio to get to the meeting point if you’re staying near the Duomo or Palazzo Vecchio/Piazza della Signoria area.

That is also the side of Florence where the Accademia Gallery (where the David sculpture is) and the Uffizi Gallery are located. (We explored that area the day after our food tour during the fantastic “ Florence in a Day with David, Duomo, Uffizi & Walking Tour .”)

We met in front of the state of Cosimo Ridolfi in Piazza Santo Spirito, as our email confirmation instructed. Our guide, Antonio, was awaiting our arrival. Our group of ten people was eager to explore the Oltrarno area and try new foods.

Antonio shared a bit about the area we were standing in and Italy’s history before we started walking to our first food destination. He shared things about Italy’s formation as a nation and the Italian language we had never thought of before. It all tied into the Florence food tour we were about to take.

Florence Food Tour Food and Drink Locations

Again, we won’t get into the specifics of where we stopped out of respect for the tour and you, so you’ll have great surprises when you sign up for it.

But a favorite stop was a small apertivo bar, where Antonio remembers shopping for herbs with his parents as a child. The building has been in the owner’s family for multiple generations and had a former life as an herbal shop years ago.

Another hit of the tour was a famous “wine window” of Florence. It was even an item for one of the women on our tour to check off her Italy bucket list.

Because we were with a tour that had a reservation at the popular wine window, we were able to bypass the long line of people waiting for their turn. Such a perk to be on a well-organized food tour!

Book the Same Food Tour in Florence

These wine windows were recently resurrected and regained popularity during the pandemic. Antonio shared the history of the wine windows in Florence, which was not at all the reason we suspected they were invented!

We also loved stopping at a BBQ place. But it’s not at all like American BBQ. It’s just a place where they grill items inside on a special grill. Famously, the restaurant serves “Florentine Steak.” Trying this famous Florentine dish with other excited tourists anxious to dig in was thrilling.

Tasting the steak is part of what made it one of the top things to do in Florence .

Our dessert stop was for gelato on this tour, like it was during our food tour in Rome. But truthfully, you cannot escape gelato in Italy. It’s EVERYWHERE . And it was great to try different flavors in Florence and learn about one, in particular, that was a local favorite.

Rome and Florence Food Tours Conclusion

We recommend both food tours in both cities. We truly learned and ate different things on each tour. The breadth of knowledge we gained about Italy’s local cuisine, culture, and history through exploring Florence and Rome with experienced local guides was invaluable.

We advise signing up for both tours in advance (they often sell out weeks ahead of time, especially during peak travel seasons) and booking for a date as close to when you arrive in the city as possible.

That way, you will be able to eat subsequent meals with more knowledge of how the locals eat and order, and you can benefit from the restaurant recommendations from the Devour food tour guides.
