Origin: Unknown

Definition: The realisation that each passerby is living a life as complex as your own.

The full definition, taken from The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows reads:

[Sonder is] the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries, and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

I often feel this way when I pass groups of strangers, speaking a language that is completely foreign to me, and realise just how incredibly big the world is. We all have a life that is full of different connections, memories and possibilities. That’s sonder.

Amazing list! One word I’d add is the Dutch word “gezellig” or “gezelligheid” – similarly to hygge, it describes a feeling of warmth/comfort/coziness/quaintness in certain settings or around certain people.

Thank you so much for sharing this Heba. So interesting to learn that Dutch has a similar word :)

So many of these describe me or my feelings about seeing the world. But, if I had to pick one, the one that best describes how I choose my destinations would be “selcouth”. I so want to be a stranger in a strange land. To have my belief that there is no such thing as “normal” affirmed again and again and over again.

What a beautiful word. Thanks for sharing, Janet :)

What does Supreme Court Trump ballot ruling mean for 2024 Colorado primary voting on Tuesday?

By Jesse Sarles

Updated on: March 4, 2024 / 9:20 AM MST / CBS Colorado

The appeal of the landmark Colorado Supreme Court decision regarding Donald Trump and eligibility for the state's ballot is a success , but because of the timing of the high court ruling people may be wondering if votes for the former president in the 2024 Colorado presidential primary will still count.

The U.S. Supreme Court didn't issue their ruling stating that Trump is allowed on the ballot until Monday -- the day before the state's primary -- and many Republican voters have already cast their votes (because Colorado is a mail-ballot election state). Trump's name was among the candidates on the ballot despite the uncertainty in the courts. Had the appeal been unsuccessful, votes for Trump would not have counted. But now they will.

President Trump Meets With Governors Of Colorado And North Dakota

What the Supreme Court ruled on the Colorado Trump ballot case

The justices of the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Trump v. Anderson that Donald Trump is eligible to be on the Colorado ballot. The case focused on Trump's conduct during the Jan. 6 insurrection related to the 14th Amendment . It holds a clause -- Section 3 -- which bars those who have sworn to uphold the U.S. Constitution from serving in government if they took part in insurrection. The nation's high court found that states lack the power to apply Section 3 to presidential candidates.

Why is Trump already on the 2024 Colorado primary ballot?

After the Colorado Supreme Court's ruling in December that Donald Trump was disqualified from the GOP primary ballot in 2024, there were questions about whether the former president's name would still be on the ballot in the Centennial State. But Colorado's high court announced with its ruling that it paused its decision with the expectation the U.S. Supreme Court would hear the case, and they announced they would before the deadline set by the Colorado Supreme Court. That meant that it was ensured Trump's name would remain listed until the U.S. Supreme Court took action. Because that didn't happen until this week, Trump's name has been on the ballot and will continue to be on it.

Colorado's secretary of state certified the statewide Republican ballot for the 2024 presidential primary election in January. As part of Colorado's mail ballot election process, Republican voters and Unaffiliated voters received Republican presidential ballots in the mail several weeks ago and Trump's name was on it.

What will voting for Trump in the 2024 Colorado primary do?

Republican and Unaffiliated voters in Colorado who vote for Donald Trump in the presidential primary will have those votes counted just like in any other election. Trump is hoping to become president for a second term after losing to Democrat Joe Biden in his re-election bid.

super-tuesday.png

Trump is currently the leader among the GOP candidates vying to be the political party's nominee for president and on Super Tuesday the votes will be counted for Colorado and more than a dozen other states.

Will Trump be on the ballot in Colorado for the 2024 presidential election?

If Donald Trump's campaign for the Republican presidential election is a success, Trump will be on the ballot as the sole Republican choice in the 2024 general election. There's no reason at this point why the former president's name would not appear on the ballot in the general election in Colorado and across the country. The general election takes place in November, and in Colorado the ballots for that election will be mailed out many weeks ahead of Election Day on Nov. 5.

Foreword vs. Forward: What’s the Difference?

Home » Foreword vs. Forward: What’s the Difference?

When two words sound alike, but are not spelled the same and do not mean the same things, they are called homophones. There are many of these words in English.

It’s easy to confuse two homophones in writing—after all, they are pronounced the same, so you need to rely on context to determine which word to use.

Foreword and forward are a classic set of homophones . They sound identical when spoken aloud, but they are used in separate contexts that don’t overlap. You have to be sure whether you mean foreword or forward , or your writing won’t make sense.

What is the Difference Between Foreword and Forward?

In this article, I will compare foreword vs. forward . I will use each word in a sentence to illustrate its proper context, and, at the end, I will give you a helpful trick to use when deciding whether to use forward or foreword when writing your own pieces.

When to Use Forward

Define forward and define foreword

Forward means the direction in front of you , or more simply, ahead . Figuratively, it can also mean onward so as to make progress , even on a project or task that doesn’t involve actual travel.

Here are some examples.

  • Rachel noticed that the path forward was blocked by a fallen tree.
  • Before the job can move forward, we need updated designs from the engineering department.
  • Prandini also fell forward at the finish, and like Miller, she said her dive had not been intentional. – The New York Times

Forward can be used as an adjective. See the sentence below.

  • Rachel made forward progress by stepping over the fallen tree.

Forward can also be a noun. This usage is usually relegated to the world of sports, where a forward is a mainly offensive position player .

For example,

  • Jeremy is a starting forward on our soccer team.

Lastly, forward is sometimes used as a verb. In this sense, it means to pass information along . In the information age, this has come to refer to email.

See the sentence below for an example.

  • Please forward the spreadsheet to accounting.

The Transportation Department proposes new rules for how airlines handle wheelchairs

Passengers wait in line at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in 2021 in Virginia.

WASHINGTON — For people who use wheelchairs, air travel can be a nightmare . There are countless stories of wheelchairs damaged, delayed and even destroyed.

Now the Biden administration is trying to change that by proposing new standards for how airlines must accommodate passengers with disabilities.

"Transportation is still inaccessible for far too many people, and that's certainly true for aviation," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a call with reporters. "This is about making sure that all Americans can travel safely and with dignity."

A New Rule Means Some People With Wheelchairs Can't Fly On American Airlines

Investigations

A new rule means some people with wheelchairs can't fly on american airlines.

The Department of Transportation invited dozens of other disability advocates to Washington on Thursday to talk about the proposed regulation . It would make mishandling of wheelchairs an automatic violation of the Air Carrier Access Act — making it easier to hold airlines accountable when they damage or delay the return of a wheelchair, Buttigieg said.

When airlines break a wheelchair or other mobility device, disability advocates argue, it's not like any other piece of luggage.

"People don't realize that this is a part of my body. If this is broken, you've broken my legs," said Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, who lost both of her legs in the Iraq war. Duckworth has pushed to require airlines to disclose how many wheelchairs they damage. She says they broke 892 wheelchairs in a single month last year.

"Imagine if the American public saw that the airlines broke 892 pairs of legs in a single month. There would be hue and cry, but there hasn't been," she said.

After Her Wheelchair Was Left Behind, Woman Describes How Airlines Can Do Better

The proposed rule would mandate that airlines provide more training for employees and contractors who physically assist passengers with disabilities and handle passengers' wheelchairs and other mobility devices.

DOT advisor Kelly Buckland, who also uses a wheelchair, says that training is key to protecting wheelchairs — and preventing injuries to disabled passengers.

"I think a lot of the general public is aware about the damage to our equipment. But I don't think there's as much awareness around how we get harmed," Buckland said.

The proposed rule includes hefty fines of more than $100,000 per incident. The major airlines have not said anything publicly about that. Their trade group Airlines For America said in a statement that carriers are "committed to offering a high level of customer service and providing a positive and safe flight experience for passengers with disabilities."

Despite calls to improve, air travel is still a nightmare for many with disabilities

Despite calls to improve, air travel is still a nightmare for many with disabilities

The immediate reaction from disability advocates was largely positive, though some expressed disappointment about what the proposed rule leaves out.

"The reason I didn't fly any more and I gave up flying was too much damage to my chair," said Theo Braddy, the executive director of the National Council on Independent Living.

Braddy says not flying has held him back in his career, and stopped him from traveling with his wife. But he says the DOT's proposal is changing his idea of what's possible.

"I didn't think this kind of stuff would happen in my lifetime. I thought that was okay, though, because the next generation would benefit," Braddy said. "I'm realizing maybe I will see it in my lifetime."

Flying is "by far the part of traveling that I dread the most," said Cory Lee, who writes a blog about accessible travel called Curb Free With Cory Lee . Lee says his powered wheelchair weighs about 400 pounds, and estimates that it's damaged in some way about half of the times he flies.

"Air travel is what needs the most help in the travel industry to become more inclusive and accessible. And any step toward getting better is important," Lee said in an interview.

But Lee and other wheelchair users had been hoping for more.

Wheelchairs On Planes: Why Can't Passengers Use Their Own Onboard?

Shots - Health News

Wheelchairs on planes: why can't passengers use their own onboard.

"The rule certainly is doing something, but I don't know if it's doing enough," said Emily Ladau, a disability rights activist and author of the book Demystifying Disability .

Under the rule, airlines would be required to provide "prompt assistance" to passengers with disabilities when boarding and deplaning. Ladau says she wants more clarity about how that is defined.

"I can't tell you how many times I have sat on the plane waiting for sometimes close to an hour, if not more, just to have my wheelchair returned to me," Ladau said. "And occasionally have found that my wheelchair was not returned to me promptly because it was damaged."

The proposed rule does not include what Lee called his "ultimate dream" to stay in his own wheelchair on a plane .

"That is the Holy Grail, and we are working toward it," Buttigieg said, while acknowledging that allowing passengers to stay in their wheelchairs on the plane will be "very challenging" from a safety and engineering perspective.

For now, the DOT has more work to do before these proposed rules get off the ground. The public has 60 days to comment.

Are there any angel number dates in 2024? 11 lucky dates to look for in April

'angel numbers are repeating number sequences, often used as a guide for deeper spiritual exploration.'.

Do you believe in angel numbers as a sign of luck, good karma, confirmation or empowerment? Did you feel particularly hopeful on days like 2/2/22 or 2/2/24? Do you make a wish when the clock reads 11:11 ?

If you’re not interested in numerology, seeing a sequence of repeating numbers might not mean much to you. But if you do believe in lucky numbers, below is a list of dates to watch out for.

Here’s a quick introduction to what numerology and angel numbers are and 11 lucky dates in April 2024.

What do angel numbers mean?

Angel numbers typically refer to a sequence of three repeating numbers, like 222 , 333 , 444 , 555 and 777 . (666, by the way, is definitely not an angel number.)

“Angel numbers are repeating number sequences, often used as a guide for deeper spiritual exploration,” USA TODAY’s guide to angel numbers says. “These sequences can range from 000 to 999 , and each has its own distinct meaning and energy.”

Angel numbers are a part of a belief system called numerology, which assigns energies, intentions and vibrations to letters and numbers.

According to Britannica , numerology uses “numbers to interpret a person’s character or to divine the future. The theory behind numerology is based on the Pythagorean idea that all things can be expressed in numerical terms because they are ultimately reducible to numbers.”

Are there any angel number dates in 2024? Are palindrome numbers lucky?

Although there won’t be an angel number date like 2/2/22 this year, there are 11 lucky dates coming up in April. They’re called palindrome days , which is when the date can be read the same way backward as it is forward. Common palindrome words, for example, are "taco cat," "madam," "radar" and "mom."

Palindrome days are not the same as an angel number day, but they are both considered lucky in numerology.

According to the Farmers Almanac, “Palindrome dates are especially notable because they are rare. For this reason, they are believed to be lucky.”

Daylight saving time 2024: Sunshine Protection Act, why Florida still springs forward, for now

When is daylight saving time we set our clocks ahead or 'spring forward' at 2 a.m. est sunday, march 10, 2024, and 'fall back' sunday, nov. 3, 2024..

forward travel meaning

  • What hour is lost during daylight savings? We lose an hour of sleep when the clocks "spring forward" and are turned ahead at 2 a.m. for one hour when daylight saving time begins.
  • Did I gain or lose an hour? Fall is always when you “fall back” an hour, so that's when you'll gain an hour.
  • Do we lose an hour of sleep in March? Yes.

Get ready for more sunshine during the day, Florida! Daylight saving time starts soon.

Daylight saving time for 2024 starts at 2 a.m. EST Sunday, March 10, for "spring forward " and ends at 2 a.m. EST Sunday, Nov. 3, for "fall back." Each time, we'll change our wall clocks. In the spring, we set our clocks ahead by one hour . In the fall, we set our clocks back by one hour — unless you live in a state or area that does not observe daylight saving time .

Below are things to know about the age-old practice, why we spring forward and fall back, the Sunshine Protection Act, and other facts about daylight saving time.

What is daylight saving time?

According to timeanddate.com , "daylight saving time is the practice of setting the clocks one hour ahead of standard time to make use of more sunlight in the spring, summer, and fall evenings. Daylight Saving Time (DST) is used to save energy and make better use of daylight. It was first used in 1908 in Thunder Bay, Canada."

Daylight saving time became a national standard in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act, which was established as a way to continue to conserve energy. The thinking was, if it's light out longer, that's less time you'll need to use lights in your home.

Why do we change our clocks twice a year?

Those who support ending daylight saving time permanently advocate brighter afternoons and more economic activity. In Florida, ending daylight saving time could help tourism, legislators say.

What is the Sunshine Protection Act? Did the Sunshine Protection Act pass?

The  Sunshine Protection Act  would permanently extend daylight saving time from eight months of the year to the full 12 months. The bill was first introduced in March 2018 by  Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida  and Rep. Vern Buchanan. The pair reintroduced the bill, along with other sponsors, in 2019, 2021 and 2023.

The  bill would make daylight saving time permanent  across the U.S., but so far, the measure has not yet been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, nor has it been signed into law by President Biden.

What does 'spring forward, fall back' mean?

According to dictionary.com , daylight saving, commonly referred to as daylight savings, "is begun in the spring by setting clocks one hour ahead. They are then set one hour back in the fall. … People often use the simple mnemonic spring forward, fall back to remember to set clocks forward one hour (e.g., from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.) in the spring and backward one hour (e.g., from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m.) in the fall."

DST for dogs: Will daylight saving time freak out your pets? Here's how to get your dogs and cats ready

Which cities in Florida are not in the Eastern Time Zone?

Most of Florida is in the Eastern Time Zone, except for Pensacola, Panama City, Marianna, Chipley, Defuniak Springs, Valparaiso, Fort Walton Beach and Crestview.

Does daylight saving time affect Floridians in Central Time Zone?

Yes. Central Time can be a big frustration for Pensacolians and other Panhandle residents. In a work sense, it could be very difficult scheduling meetings if you're on CT and a colleague is in the Eastern Time Zone. Try scheduling an outing with friends from Tallahassee when neither is quite sure when to leave the house in order to arrive on time!

Who's in charge of daylight saving time?

The U.S. Department of Transportation oversees the nation's time zones and the uniform observance of daylight saving time, according to transportation.gov. The oversight of time zones was assigned to the DOT to help keep track of transportation. The DOT manages daylight saving time and cites energy reduction and reduced crime as reasons for the time change.

Which states don't observe daylight saving time?

Arizona and Hawaii do not recognize DST. There's also no need to change the clocks in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas.

Which countries observe daylight saving time?

Daylight saving time is used in more than 70 countries worldwide and affects more than a billion people each year. The beginning and end dates vary from one country to another.

What are the pros of daylight saving time?

If permanent daylight saving time takes effect, the biggest pro by far would be no sleep disruption. No need to change your clock twice a year before, at or after 2 a.m. on a Sunday in the fall and spring.

Other perks would be more time during the day to be out and about, and experts say it's better for your health — no sleep disruption. No preparing-for-bed or waking-up habits to change.

What are common complaints about daylight saving time?

Likely the No. 1 complaint about daylight saving time is the disruption of sleep and habit.

Safety is another hot topic: Schoolchildren at bus stops became the issue, and after eight Florida school kids died in accidents, Florida Gov. Reuben Askew led an effort to curtail daylight saving time to eight months between late February and late October.

Ready to spring forward for time change 2024? When clocks move for Daylight Saving Time

forward travel meaning

No matter how strongly you might feel about it,  daylight saving time  will once again move clocks an hour forward soon.

Here's what to know about the changing of the clocks this spring, and how the practice came about.

What is Daylight Saving Time? Daylight saving explained

Daylight saving time is the practice of setting the clock forward one hour in the spring to have the sunrise and sunset at a more reasonable hour.

The Uniform Time Act  established nationwide standards for the observance of daylight saving time when it was signed into law in 1966. Before that, there was a patchwork of standards as municipalities and states chose whether or not to observe the practice.

When does the Daylight Saving time change 2024 occur in U.S.?

In 2024, daylight saving time will begin at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10. It will mean losing an hour of sleep and moving the clocks around your house forward one hour, though your cell phone will likely automatically adjust.

The sun will rise and set an hour later.

When does Daylight Savings 2024's time change fall back?

Unless efforts to  make daylight saving time permanent  succeed, daylight saving time will end for the year at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3. This will mean setting your clocks back an hour and gaining an hour of sleep, plus earlier sunrises and sunsets.

When does Daylight Saving Time end permanently?

The US Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022 and reintroduced it in 2023.

But the US House has yet to consider the bill that would permanently extend daylight saving time from just eight months to the entire year.

Did the Oklahoma Daylight Saving Time bill pass?

Oklahoma joined many states when it  considered a bill last year to make daylight saving time permanent  — known as a "trigger bill," it would go into effect if the Sunshine Protection Act became federal law.

While the Oklahoma bill to "lock the clock" easily passed the Senate in 2023, it never made it to a vote on the House floor.

The bill's author, Sen. Blake "Cowboy" Stephens, R-Tahlequah, has  filed a new bill  hoping to accomplish the same goal of adopting daylight saving time year-round. The bill will be considered in the upcoming legislative session.

Did Benjamin Franklin invent Daylight Saving Time?

While founding father  Benjamin Franklin is often given credit  for first coming up with the idea in a 1784 essay — in which he proposed that Parisians could save the modern-day equivalent of $200 million by waking up at dawn and "using sunshine instead of candles."

But, as History.com points out, Franklin was proposing a change in sleep schedules rather than the time itself.

Why do we have daylight savings? Did Daylight Saving Time start because of farmers?

Most people have heard the myth that  daylight saving time came about to give farmers an extra hour  of sunlight in the evening.

But in reality, farmers led the opposition to daylight saving time in 1919, a year after it was implemented in the United States as a wartime measure.

"The sun, not the clock, dictated farmers’ schedules, so daylight saving was very disruptive,"  History.com  reported. "Farmers had to wait an extra hour for dew to evaporate to harvest hay, hired hands worked less since they still left at the same time for dinner and cows weren’t ready to be milked an hour earlier to meet shipping schedules."

Nationwide daylight saving time was repealed in 1919, though states and cities still had the option to enact it for themselves, leading to a patchwork of time zones across the country until the Uniform Time Act passed in 1966.

Who invented Daylight Saving Time?

The first true proponent of daylight saving time was an English builder named  William Willet . In 1907, he published a pamphlet called "The Waste of Daylight" that campaigned for advancing clocks in spring and turning them back in fall, according to the  National Museum of Scotland . Willet also encouraged people to get out of bed earlier in the summer to make the most of daylight.

Willett died in 1915 before seeing his idea come to fruition, according to History.com.

Which country started Daylight Saving Time?

In 1916, Germany enacted daylight saving time to conserve electricity. The United Kingdom adopted the practice weeks later, known as "summertime."

Today, less than  40 percent of the world's countries practice daylight saving time , according to Statista.

"Sunday morning at 2 a.m. was when they would interrupt the least amount of train travel around the country,” Downing said.

Which U.S. states don't change clocks for Daylight Saving Time?

As of July 25, 2022, the  U.S. Department of Transportation  noted that only Hawaii and parts of Arizona do not participate in daylight saving time. The Navajo Nation is the lone exception in Arizona.

The territories of American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands also do not participate.

According to the website, states may exempt themselves from observing daylight saving time by state law in accordance with the  Uniform Time Act , as amended.

Daylight Savings Time and time change in Kentucky

Kentucky first observed daylight saving time in  1918, when the Standard Time Act  established daylight saving time to conserve electricity during World War I. After the war was over, daylight saving was no longer national law and became a local option.

Between 1918 and today, Kentucky observed daylight saving time for 75 years, according to  timeanddate.com . For a while, cities across Kentucky were inconsistent, with some observing the time change and others not.

But starting in 1970,  Time and Date AS  has tracked observance of daylight saving time in Kentucky every year.

Over the years, researchers have  tried to tie your body getting an hour less of sleep  that night to a variety of issues, including an increase in car crashes and health problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

In 2019, Kentucky Republican Reps. Bart Rowland of Tompkinsville and Brandon Reed of Hodgenville  pre-filed a bill  to do away with resetting clocks every six months and instead use daylight saving time all year long. To do so, however, requires authorization by the federal government.

Under federal law, states are allowed not to observe daylight saving time, with Arizona and Hawaii being the lone states to do so. States are not allowed to stay on daylight time throughout the year.

When does Daylight Saving Time end permanently?

Despite the Sunshine Protection Act being unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate in 2022, there is no permanent end in sight.

The bill was not signed into law by the U.S. House of Representatives , citing other priorities that needed to be addressed before tackling DST, according to The Hill . Thus, the bill has not been signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.) told The Hill in July that efforts to find a consensus for Daylight Saving Time continue to fall flat with an emphasis on geographical issues rather than political party lines.

"The problem is that a lot of people say to me, ‘Oh, we should just have, you know, we shouldn’t switch back and forth, we should just have standard or daylight saving,’ but then they disagree over which one to enact," Pallone told The Hill.

"And so that’s the problem. We need a consensus that if we’re gonna have one time, what is it? And I haven’t been able to get a consensus on that."

Did Daylight Saving Time start because of farmers?

No, according to  almanac.com .

"Many Americans wrongly point to farmers as the driving force behind Daylight Saving Time. In fact, farmers were its strongest opponents and, as a group, stubbornly resisted the change from the beginning,"  Catherine Boeckmann wrote for almanac.com .

"When the war ended, the farmers and working-class people who had held their tongues began speaking out. They demanded an end to Daylight Saving Time, claiming it benefited only office workers and the leisure class. The controversy spotlighted the growing gap between rural and urban dwellers."
