UAE residents lose thousands to tour operator accused of fraud

Victims file police complaint against dubai-based travel company after at least half a million dirhams lost.

Scores of people have claimed they have been swindled out of thousands of dirhams by a holiday company in Dubai.

Victims of the potential fraud interviewed by The National alleged that Dubai-based Royal Regis Tours and Travels disappeared with more than half a million dirhams worth of holiday packages that did not materialise.

Many said they paid Dh10,000 to Dh30,000 as a one-time payment for package deals that promised one free family holiday every year anywhere in the world, discounted hotel rates, free gym memberships and concert tickets, among other perks.

The total number of potential victims is not known but more people are coming forward.

The victims of the accused operator came together on social media and have jointly filed a police case against the company.

They have also approached the Department of Economy and Tourism in Dubai, which regulates the industry. The authorities are aware of the case but did not comment further.

The company’s office in Al Mamzar Centre on Al Ittihad Road has been closed since the alleged scam came to light. The mobile phones of their sales agents were switched-off when The National repeatedly called.

In a series of interviews with The National , alleged victims all pointed to what they believe is a scam.

A raffle prize was used to entice families to gather at a hotel and pay up.

They were given a compelling marketing presentation and were asked to sign-up for holiday deals and prizes worth Dh10,000 to Dh30,000.

Wei Choon Yean says he signed up for the deal because he wanted to take his children on holiday. Photo: Wei Choon Yean

By the time people realised they might be victims of a scam, the company and its dozens of sales staff and managers vanished.

“I lost Dh28,000. I took the membership because I wanted to take my children on holiday. That was my weak spot and that is where they hit,” Wei Choon Yean, a Canadian expat in Dubai, who works as a retail manager, told The National.

Mr Yean said the sales agents were so convincing and friendly that he did not "blink an eye" before swiping his credit card to make a full payment.

“In fact, they made it look like a celebration with balloons and people clapping for us when I signed up. They said it was the best decision I had ever taken for my family. I did not know I was walking into a trap," he said.

Mr Yean said his ordeal began when he casually filled up a raffle ticket at a counter during a sales event at the World Trade Centre in April last year, and later got a call about winning the prize.

“When my wife and I went to a hotel to claim it, they invited us for a presentation about holiday packages the company offered," he said.

“There were several families and half a dozen employees including managers of the tour company. Everything they showed looked like a perfect dream. My contract has seven days of a free stay at any four-star property in the world every year plus many other offers.”

As frequent travellers, the deal appeared good value for money for Mr Yean and his wife.

“If we signed up on the same day, they said we could even get a free holiday for a couple and children who could accompany us at half the cost. We were so enticed and signed up for an emerald package that cost Dh28,000,” he said.

The fake contract that Canadian expat Wei Choon Yean signed, shows he paid Dh28,000 for an 'Emerald' holiday package. Photo: Wei Choon Yean

But in the coming months, several attempts to use the offer did not materialise, Mr Yean claimed, and the company staff kept making excuses such as the unavailability of hotels and lack of advance notice.

Several of his emails went unanswered for months.

“That is when I started Googling the company and saw complaints posted by many others. I thought I would never get scammed and that was the biggest mistake on my side,” said Mr Yean.

Same plot but different victims

His story corroborated that of an Indian couple in Dubai, Paromita and Indrajit. The couple, who did not want to reveal their full names, said they signed up for the deal in August 2022 because they were desperate to travel after the pandemic .

“I think they played on that psyche where people were frustrated with the Covid-19 restrictions,” said Paromita.

The couple paid Dh20,500 for a ‘sapphire package’ that came with free seven days stay and a string of other benefits.

“In November, we did get a free night’s stay in Abu Dhabi and they also offered us a free ticket to a music concert in Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai," she said.

"That won our trust. But every time we tried to book a holiday, it became impossible to get a response.”

The couple said they were shocked to see the office closed when they visited in early January.

Mohammed Khan from Pakistan said he and his four other friends were duped.

“There are five of us. We had saved up money during Covid and wanted to travel together to Europe. All of us lost Dh10,000 each. We hope authorities will nab the culprits,” he said.

Moiz S, an Indian, 42, who works in the healthcare sector in Sharjah, is another victim. He claimed he lost Dh10,900.

“I have been a member since 2019. I could not use any offer because of Covid-19. But I have been pestering them with emails and calls for a trip to Georgia and India but with no luck," he said.

“When I demanded a refund, they flatly refused. It was only when I posted a comment on social media, I got connected with dozens of victims.

“It makes me angry that I lost my hard-earned money. But even worse is the feeling that I got fooled.”

My First-Ever Cruise Was on the Largest Ship in the World—Here’s My Honest Review of Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas

The good, the bad, the bougie.

When you think of a cruise vacation, what comes to mind? Breakfast buffets, Elvis trivia and the unlikely but not totally implausible threat of pirates? Same. That is, until I actually went on one.

I was raised by two adventure-loving nomads (who have since settled in New Jersey because, life), so the urge to travel is in my blood. I’ve been lucky enough to ski the mountains of New Mexico , hike the Swiss Alps, trail race around Jackson Hole and safari through Kenya, but in my 30 plus years on this planet, I’ve never taken a cruise. And to be honest, I’ve never really wanted to.

So, how did I, a self-proclaimed land lover, end up on the maiden voyage of the largest ship in the world? It’s simple: Cruises are cool again.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association industry report, 2024 is shaping up to be the year we all go cruising. With post-pandemic bookings steadily rising since 2022, 35.7 million passengers are projected to set sail in 2024, a whopping 20 percent more than in 2019. And with this increased interest comes a whole new customer base. As more millennials and Gen X travelers dip their toes in the proverbial waters, gone are the days of the stereotypical cruiser repping a Hawaiian shirt and a boomer birthday. Plus, with both solo and multi-generational family travel firmly on the rise, cruises seem to be at the top of everyone’s bucket list—not to mention their “For You” page.

Between the nine-month world cruise making waves on social media to a number of new ships launching in 2024 , I couldn’t resist kicking off the year with a floating getaway. At the top of my maritime list was Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas , the newest kid on the block that everyone (from The New York Times to TikTok ) couldn’t stop talking about. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned vet, this ship has a little bit of something for everyone. Here’s my honest review.

Boomers Will Be Dirt Flirting This Year, Say Trend Forecasters

Ship Features & Onboard Activities

True to its moniker, the world’s largest ship is a stunning behemoth that, upon arrival, made all the other ships casually parked in the port look like bath toys. Powered by liquefied natural gas—a more energy-efficient and cleaner burning fuel source—the Icon of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s most sustainable ship to date. At full capacity, it can house 7,600 passengers with 28 different types of accommodations ranging from an infinite ocean-view balcony to a $100,000 three-story family townhouse .

To keep all those people happy, the ship features seven different pools, nine hot tubs and over 40 restaurants with cuisines ranging from coastal seafood to Japanese hibachi. Marketed as the ultimate family vacation , the ship’s stand-out features shine a light on multigenerational fun, from epic waterslides and mini golf to comedy shows and craft cocktails.

As a first-time cruiser, the boat can be overwhelming with 20 decks full of places to explore and activities to book. Luckily, the Royal Caribbean app makes it easy to both prep for your trip prior to leaving and organize your stay while on board. Though I logged way more steps than I ever anticipated (a plus!), the ship’s layout made its size feel less daunting. Divided into eight different neighborhoods each with their own unique function and theme, the overall flow felt seamless and convenient with numerous elevators, easy accessibility and tons of open space. Here are a few of my favorite neighborhoods onboard:

chill island royal caribbean icon of the seas review e98785

  • Thrill Island: Highlights include Category 6 (the largest waterpark at sea featuring the tallest drop slide and the first family raft slide at sea), Crown’s Edge (a part ropes course, part zip line experience that suspends passengers out over the open ocean), as well as cruise classics like the FlowRider surf simulator, a sport court, a rock-climbing wall and family-friendly mini golf.
  • Chill Island: The place to be to have the ultimate lounge day, featuring swim-up bars, whirlpools and tropical refreshments.
  • The Hideaway: An adult only (18+) area featuring the first suspended infinity pool at sea with ocean views and a dedicated DJ and bar.

surfside-royal-caribbean-icon-of-the-seas-review

  • Surfside: As the first neighborhood designed specifically for kids, Surfside has everything young families would need to stay and play all day, including a splash pad, a baby pool, an arcade and an underwater-themed carousel, plus five different dining options the whole family can enjoy.
  • Central Park: This open-air hub features tons of live greenery for a full-theme immersion. Similar to its stateside namesake, there are seven unique bars and restaurants that call this neighborhood home, including a blues club and a walk-up Champagne bar.

aquadome-royal-caribbean-icon-of-the-seas-review

  • AquaDome: With panoramic views of the open ocean, the AquaDome is home to the most epic aqua show this writer has ever seen. Hosted at the AquaTheater, the highly anticipated experience features high divers, synchronized swimmers and the first-ever aerial pas de deux (duet dance). It’s weird and wonderful in the most extraordinary way. A must-see for anyone lucky enough to snag a seat.
  • Royal Promenade: A mainstay in many Royal Caribbean vessels, the Royal Promenade is located at the heart of the ship. In addition to 15 bars, restaurants and lounges, this neighborhood includes a dueling piano bar, music hall and comedy club. At the center of it all is The Pearl, a multi-sensory immersive structure that features kinetic tiles and specialized lighting to mimic the movement of water.

Stateroom Accommodations

Upon arrival, we made our way to an ocean-view balcony stateroom on the 12 th deck, our home away from home for the next few days. At 204 square feet, the room was perfectly suitable for two people. Cozy, inviting and surprisingly quiet, with smart storage options, well-placed charging ports and a good amount of room to move about freely without feeling like you were on top of each other. The on-suite bathroom was on the smaller side, but the spacious shower made up for the crowded toilet and sink area. My favorite part of the room was the outdoor balcony, which felt private and secluded while bringing in tons of natural light.

Food & Drink

Though the number of dining options onboard is impressive, the quality at certain locations was a little lackluster. My favorites included Izumi for sushi and hibachi, Sorrento’s for all-you-can-eat thin-crust pizza and Pearl Café for 24-hour snacks, both sweet and savory. I was also pleasantly surprised by the breakfast and lunch buffet options at both Windjammer and Surfside Eatery (which has a menu catered to a much younger age bracket but hey, sometimes you just need a chicken nugget).

The main dining room, however, was a miss for me. A standard in all Royal Caribbean ships, the table service offerings were perfectly fine (I did like my salmon), but largely boring and mass-produced. After ending the meal with a curdled crème brûlée that resembled scrambled eggs, it was a one-and-done experience.

In addition to the standard buffet options, Icon of the Seas also features laidback brunch spots, kid-approved bites and extravagant dining experiences like the Empire Supper Club complete with a live jazz band, an eight-course meal and cocktail pairings.

1400-lobby-bar-royal-caribbean-icon-of-the-seas-review

Unlike some of the food offerings, the specialty cocktails on board were a memorable highlight. Each bar has its own curated list of libations that are intriguing and innovative—not to mention delicious. The 1400 Lobby Bar, a mainstay in the Royal Promenade, features unique twists on classic cocktails like a pineapple pisco sour and a rose and grapefruit Aperol spritz. And if you’re still on the espresso martini train (no shame) both Point and Feather and Rye & Bean offer top-notch blends. So whether you like Bombay or Bulleit, there’s truly something for everyone–including a handful of zero-proof options.

Destinations & Pricing

More interested in the destination than the journey? The Icon of the Seas currently offers six different routes sailing to both the Western and Eastern Caribbean with highlights including the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. All round-trip voyages depart from Miami, Florida , and most include a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas—a private island resort owned by Royal Caribbean.

Though the cruise I went on was a shortened version of their standard week-long package, we did spend a few sunny hours on Perfect Day at CocoCay, which features white sand beaches, tons of pools, overwater cabanas and a massive waterpark with heart-pounding thrills (including the tallest waterslide in North America). My favorite part of the island had to be Hideaway Beach, the brand-new adults-only oasis with swim-up bars, in-water hammocks and stunning views of the ocean.

As the newest vessel in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, a vacation on the Icon of the Seas does not come cheap. Prices vary depending on your preferred travel route, but for a standard seven-day cruise, dynamic pricing starts at $3,600 per week for two people in an interior stateroom when booked directly through Royal Caribbean. Luckily, this price also includes meals and beverages at select restaurants, most entertainment options and a number of daily activities, but if you’re traveling with multiple people or are looking for a bigger room with a better view, prepare to shell out even more.

Final Thoughts

What we like.

  • the ship is the star of the show—it’s both the main attraction and the destination
  • great for large groups and young families
  • tons of dining and entertainment options
  • excellent craft cocktails

What We Don't Like

  • lackluster food
  • limited destinations and departure port

To all the hardcore cruisers out there, I see you. Though I still prefer exploring the world on my own two feet (there’s so much to see beyond the port), I can honestly say that I understand the appeal. Aside from only having to unpack once, the benefits of vacationing on a cruise are undeniable. Feel like hitting a comedy show tonight? Done. Prefer to spend the day lounging by the pool? Easy. Offspring too old for the kid club but too young to wander around a city on their own? Stick ‘em on a boat!

If you’re traveling as a family or in a large group, cruises just make sense, and that’s especially true on the Icon of the Seas. Like a fully planned vacation with minimal effort and the added bonus of a zero-commitment itinerary, this ship offers something for every generation to enjoy (yes, even Elvis trivia).

Review of Royal Kites Travel and Tours

Review of Royal Kites Travel and Tours

This is my very first post for the year 2020– the year of the metal rat! I was busy during the last two months of 2019 because of all the holiday frenzies. But, if there’s one thing that I am most stoked about last year is my trip to Korea! I and my friends got laaaayzeeey to do “DIY” so we availed a service from an agency, and this is my review of Royal Kites Travel and Tours.

Before anything else, Happy 2020! Happy Year of the Metal Rat! Gong Xi Fa Cai! 🙂

Can you believe that January is almost over and love birds are now all preparing for Valentine’s Day? Crazy how time can fly so fast! I am actually elated because of all the plans that I am putting off for a while but hopefully, I will be able to do this year. Though, I may need to shelve my travel plans because I have more important goals.

Anyway, speaking of travels, I had the most amazing November in South Korea last year. We went there during the last days of Autumn, and it was the first time that I and my friends turned to an agency for help. We were all swamped (no, really, we were just lazy) to do our own itinerary, and the Royal Kites Travel and Tours saved the day.

Just like you, the first thing that we did was to search for a review of Royal Kites Travel and Tours (and perhaps, to unearth some skeletons?) With all the scams happening, we just wanted to be cautious; besides, we are not talking about Php 1.00 here. In any case, I did not find any online write-ups about this agency. The only reviews that we leaned on are the ones written on their Facebook page, and they are all pretty decent.

We sent them messages on Facebook to inquire, and fortunately, they replied. They sent us detailed answers to all our questions. We also tried other means of communications—texting, calling their mobile and telephone numbers—and they were quite responsive.  When we were certain that this company is legitimate, we deposited Php 5,000 per head to their bank account since the reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis. Our official receipt was emailed to us a few days after.

One inclusion in our package is the visa processing. We submitted the required documents at their Shaw Boulevard office 2 months before our travel date, and we paid another Php 10,000 per head. For the requirements, process and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the Visa processing, please read this post .

A few weeks before our scheduled flight, we were informed through email that our visas have been approved and ready for pick-up. Upon collection of the visas, we paid the remaining balance.

A couple of days before our trip, they sent us all the reminders and our flight confirmation. When we landed in South Korea, we were greeted and looked after by their Korean-agency partner.

1. They will refund your reservation fee if your visa application is denied (minus their processing fee), provided that you submitted the documents to them on or before their specified deadline. 2. They have a South Korea-based agency partner which will take care of you while you are on tour. Their Korean tourist guides speak in English and are very friendly/ accommodating. 3. They respond to the questions and clarifications. 4. Their lines are always open. 5. They have offices in Shaw and in Pasay. 6. They issue official receipts. 7. They are a legitimate company.

1. They charge additional cost when you are paying using your credit or debit card. So, be sure that you have your cash on hand. 2. Their itinerary includes visiting stores that conduct demonstrations and sell expensive medicines which we did not quite enjoy. We could have just used the time we spent there in visiting other interesting tourist spots. 3. They don't respond immediately. Sometimes, it takes 2 days and a few follow-ups before they reply. 4. At times, no one answers their hotline. 5. They have tiny office space which usually tends to be crammed. 6. We did not really have the "free time" to roam in South Korea by ourselves.

My rating is 3.5 stars.

I would say that our experience with this agency was not really perfect, but it surely took inconvenience and hassle off our shoulders because everything were already provided and taken care of for us—itinerary, accommodations, transportation service, tourist guide, and food. We just had to enjoy the tour that went off without a hitch.

For any questions about their tour packages, you may check their Facebook page or their website .

Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas Review (2024)

I ’ve always loved cruising, and am always looking forward to trying a new cruise ship and/or a new cruise line. Royal Caribbean’s large, epic ships have always intrigued me.

When I was invited to the Inaugural Voyage and naming ceremony of the Odyssey of the Seas, I was excited to attend. While my mission was specifically to write an Odyssey of the Seas review, this was also my introduction to Royal Caribbean’s offerings.

I eagerly anticipated experiencing their famous combination of quality and energy for myself aboard the first Quantum Ultra Class Ship to be in the United States.

I was only on the ship for two nights, but I was able to experience and see many of its offerings during my first time on the Royal Caribbean cruise line. I loved my experience, and feel that this should be a great option for family fun, particularly those families with older kids. In fact, I loved it so much that after this complimentary media trip, I returned to the Odyssey of the Seas with my family on a 6-night trip we paid for on our own.

I was also very impressed by the crew members and the service aboard the ship. Everyone seemed to love their job and were truly there to help make my trip as memorable and worry-free as possible. Here’s my guide and review of the Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas.

Disclosure: my trip and sailing were complimentary so that I could experience the ship. My second sailing was 100% at my own expense. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links, and a click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no cost to you.

Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas Review

Odyssey of the Seas is currently sailing out of Fort Lauderdale for Caribbean routes on Southern, Eastern, and Western Caribbean itineraries and stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay . This summer and fall, it heads across the Atlantic for sailings in Greece, Italy, and Turkey.

Port Everglades is an extremely convenient port to sail from. Fort Lauderdale Airport is just a 5-10 minute drive away, and Miami is about 40 minutes away. The two flight options mean you are more likely to find a flight that works best for your budget and schedule.

I flew into Fort Lauderdale Airport and was at the terminal in line to check in within a few minutes of landing. Despite the proximity, I still recommend flying in the night before, just to be safe.

Before sailing, you’ll need to download the Royal Caribbean app and check in to your sailing. During this process, you’ll select a port arrival time, take a photo of yourself, and upload photos of your passport. It was easy to do and saved time upon my arrival.

Be sure to bring your SeaPass (through the Royal Caribbean app, set up in advance) and your passport/citizenship documents. I had to show all of these before I was able to board. Check the specific details of your sailing to make sure you know exactly what you’ll need.

Once you get on the ship, you can access your stateroom key cards. They will be at your door, waiting for you.

As I entered this ship, I was immediately impressed with the energy of this new Royal Caribbean ship. There’s lively music, friendly cruise staff, and an impressive lobby – called the Royal Esplanade (or Royal Promenade aboard some Royal Caribbean ships). It’s easy to feel like you are immediately on vacation when you walk onboard.

Activities on the Odyssey of the Seas – What You’ll Do

The excitement and energy carry across to the activities on the ship – which will keep you busy during the mornings, evenings, and days at sea. Teens will especially enjoy these, and probably won’t even want to get off the ship at ports. Some of these are offered at an additional fee, and guests should book them in advance as soon as possible.

SeaPlex: The SeaPlex is a huge section of the ship that is the home base for many of these thrilling activities. It’s great for the whole family. The main area includes a large space that is used for several activities throughout the day, including bumper cars, table tennis, and basketball.

Popular arcade games, including Mario Kart and Ski Ball, surround the area. In addition, a sports bar, Playmakers Sports Bar Arcade, is located on the 2nd floor, overlooking the SeaPlex.

North Star: This clear observation capsule travels 300 feet above sea level for amazing panoramic views. I had the opportunity to ride on North Star while we were docked at Perfect Day at Coco Cay. The entire journey is about 15 minutes, and it’s a mild ride up. I would recommend checking it out – take pictures of the great view while you are up there!

Splashaway Bay: This kid-friendly water play area includes a splash bucket, water geysers, and a small water slide. It’s best for younger kids who enjoy cooling off while having fun.

RipCord® by iFLY®: This experience is a way for guests to experience the thrill of skydiving without leaving the ship. It’s available to guests ages 3 and up, so it’s something almost all kids can enjoy!

FlowRider: Surfing without even leaving the ship? Another teen favorite, the FlowRider, is a 40-foot-long surf simulator. Private sessions are also available.

Virtual Adventure Zone: a 4D virtual reality experience where you can complete a mission with your group. This is available to guests 13 years old and older.

Rock Climbing Wall: This 40-foot rock-climbing wall is offered at no additional charge.

Pools: I loved the Caribbean-themed two-level pool deck, with multiple pools, hot tubs, and lounger chairs. Chaise beds are also available for rental. This is the perfect spot to relax and get some sun during a day at sea.

Laser Tag: Experience glow-in-the-dark laser tag at the Clash for Crystal City. It’s a 15-minute, included experience, that’s available for those at least 5 years old and 40 inches. Note that closed-toed shoes are required (something I don’t always pack for a Caribbean vacation).

Solarium adult section – if you are traveling without kids, or if they are enjoying some fun at the kids’ clubs, you’ll want to visit the Solarium. This adult-only section includes cascading pools, a clear glass roof, a bar, and ample seating to enjoy a drink and read a book.

Programming – in addition to these spectacular activities, there are other programs offered for guests. These include various educational sessions like jewelry making, karaoke, game shows, and trivia. You can find the schedule in your app.

Food on the Odyssey of the Seas – What You’ll Eat

I was incredibly impressed with the number of diverse eateries located on the ship. Regardless of when you are hungry, or what you feel like eating, you will find somewhere great to eat. I liked the “Hungry Now?” section of the app, where you can quickly look to find an open restaurant.

Do you or a member of your family have food allergies or other dietary restrictions? I was impressed with how the buffets had food clearly labeled, with a whole section in the Windjammer with gluten-free options. It’s important to indicate restrictions in your reservation, and the crew can help you with anything you need.

Seven dining establishments are included with your cruise. These include the Windjammer buffet, the Main Dining Room, the Solarium Bistro, El Loco Fresh, the Cafe at Two70, Sorrento’s Pizza, and Cafe Promenade. Room service is also available (for a delivery fee).

During my two cruises, I had the opportunity to try out a few of these – the Windjammer, the Main Dining Room, Coastal Kitchen, and the Solarium Bistro. The quantity and quality of food options are truly impressive.

The Windjammer is a huge buffet offering breakfast and lunch. I visited for breakfast and was immediately surprised by the staggering amount of food stations and options.

Even picky eaters will find something perfect for their meal. This is a great option especially in the morning since you can arrive at any time and eat at your leisure.

Guests are assigned a main dining room time and table for dinners during the duration of their cruise (or can choose anytime dining). This two-story restaurant is where most guests have dinner. While I didn’t visit the main dining room for lunch, I did visit for breakfast.

I enjoyed chatting with my friendly waiter who told me about his 18 years working for Royal Caribbean. Royal Caribbean also offers an option where you can choose your own dining time.

In addition to these included restaurants, Royal Caribbean also offers seven specialty dining locations (eight including Starbucks). In most cases, these need to be booked in advance to ensure availability.

Specialty restaurants include Chops Steakhouse, Wonderland, Teppanyaki, Izumi Sushi, Coastal Kitchen (open exclusively to suite guests), Chef’s Table, and Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar.

As an Italian food lover, I was eager to try Giovanni’s, which is the most family-friendly of the specialty options. Giovanni’s is not new to Royal Caribbean cruises , but this version on Odyssey of the Seas has been reimagined to be more casual and family-friendly.

It features pizzas created by Miami pizza chef Renato Viola. Originally from Southern Italy, Chef Viola came to the US on an O1 visa years ago.

While the pizza is delicious, I opted for their linguine with clams and shrimp as my entree. But first, we were treated to several appetizers including a charcuterie plate, gigantic meatball, and garlic knots. The food at Giovanni’s is excellent, and although there is an additional charge, I’d recommend eating there for one special dinner.

Coastal Kitchen is an included restaurant offered exclusively to guests staying in a suite-level room. We had a suite on our 6-night sailing and had several meals as well as breakfast most mornings here.

Shops on Odyssey of the Seas – What You Can Buy

As an avid shopper, I’m always excited to see the selection of shops and merchandise on any cruise ship. Most of the shops on the Odyssey of the Seas are concentrated around the spectacular Royal Promenade area of the ship.

These ships, like those on all cruise ships, are only open when the ship is sailing, due to port restrictions. They offer Royal Caribbean merchandise and name-brand apparel, as well as luxury items like cosmetics, handbags, jewelry, and watches.

Forgot something at home?

At the end of the shops, you’ll find a room with vending machines filled with essentials like toiletries, sunscreen, device chargers, and more. Like the shops, these are only open when the ship is not at port.

Staterooms on the Odyssey of the Seas – Where You’ll Sleep

Your stateroom is the main vacation component you’ll be selecting when you book your cruise. But, with all of the activities on and off the ship, you hopefully won’t be spending too much time in the room.

When choosing, think about what type of experience you’d like to have. While I don’t usually stay in the room for very long, I do enjoy having a morning cup of coffee while sitting on my balcony.

Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas has several room categories to consider. These include three levels of suites, ocean-view rooms with a balcony, interior staterooms, ocean-view staterooms with no balconies, and virtual balcony staterooms.

I had an ocean-view room with a private balcony for my stay. The room includes a pull-out couch, a comfortable king bed, a television, a bathroom with a shower, a desk, and a balcony with a small table and two chairs. There’s also a hairdryer and numerous outlets.

I did notice that there isn’t a lot of space for placing folded clothes. There is, however, a closet where you can hang items.

I’d recommend packing your suitcase using packing cubes, so you can easily access outfits from your bag. Then, you can slide the suitcase under the bed and pull the cubes out as you need them.

Toiletries in the room include hand soap and a combination body/hair wash. If you prefer to have separate shampoo or conditioner, it’s best to pack your own with you. Conditioner is sold on the ship and is also provided to suite guests.

Entertainment on Odyssey of the Seas – How You’ll Spend Your Days

While I truly enjoyed everything about my experience on the ship, the entertainment is what dazzled me. Through both my immersive session with the head of entertainment, Nick Weir, as well as watching two of the shows on the ship, it became very clear that Royal Caribbean is raising the bar on what entertainment at sea can be.

There are two separate theaters on the ship – the Two20 Theater and the Royal Theater. The Royal Theater shows two live shows while the Two20 Theater shows one. During my sailing, I had the opportunity to watch two of the shows – the Book (in the Two20 Theater) and The Effectors (in the Royal Theater).

Both shows run for less than an hour and are worth watching. While they aren’t specifically kid-friendly shows, older kids will probably enjoy seeing them for the effects and talent.

Currently, you’ll need to make a reservation to see the show. You’ll provide your cruise key card at the front entrance to show your reservation and gain admission. There’s plenty of seating, including chairs at tables in Two20.

I thoroughly enjoyed both shows, although I think the Effectors was my favorite. It was incredibly entertaining, with brilliant special effects. Although I didn’t have the chance to see Showgirls (the second show in the Royal Theater), I’m sure it was also entertaining.

In addition to these shows, there are other entertainment options including bands and singers. This entertainment is spread across the ship’s venues, including Music Hall and the Crown Bar.

There are also several fantastic bars to enjoy a drink if your kids are off exploring on their own. One must-visit is the Bionic Bar, which is staffed by two robot bartenders. You’ll have to see it to believe it! If you enjoy tropical alcoholic beverages, try a Lime and Coconut in the Lime and Coconut bar on the pool level.

Kids’ Clubs on Odyssey of the Seas

There are several kids’ club options for your children. Although my kids are older now, they always enjoyed spending time in the clubs on cruise ships, where they could have fun and meet other kids.

For younger kids (up to twelve years old), Adventure Ocean offers programming throughout the day. There are also AO Babies and AO Juniors. Admission to the kids’ club is included with your trip, although there is an extra fee for AO Babies and the Late Night Party.

If you are traveling with teens, they can hang out in the teen club. There, they will find gaming, movies, and other programming, and can meet other teens on board the ship.

Perfect Day at CocoCay – a Port of Call on Caribbean Itineraries

Our short media sailing only stopped at one port – Perfect Day at CocoCay , Royal Caribbean International’s private island in the Bahamas. This small island is packed with something for everyone, whether you are looking for thrills or would just like to relax on the beach.

CocoCay is staffed by a population of Bahamian residents who live on the island full-time. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The island accommodates up to two ships at a time. During our visit, we were joined by Freedom of the Seas for the day, and the island didn’t feel crowded at all.

There are some activities and excursions offered at an additional fee. These should be booked in advance to ensure availability. These include the Up, Up, and Away hot air balloon ride, zip lines, jet-skiing, glass-bottom boat rides, and swimming with pigs.

Love water slides? The Chill Water Park (admission charge applies) offers the Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest water slide in North America. There’s also a wave pool, Splash Summit waterslides, and Adventure Pool.

Other activities at Perfect Day at CocoCay include Chill Beach, Splashaway Bay, Captain Jill’s Galleon, Hideaway Beach, and Oasis Lagoon. Various cabanas, including overwater cabanas, are scattered throughout the island. These can be booked for an additional fee.

Other Itineraries

While the Odyssey of the Seas is currently operating in the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades, it will be moving to Europe for Greece, Italy, and Turkey itineraries later in 2024.

Time to take legal action on these scammers

I too have worst experience with them. They are not responding to the calls, messages or mails. I know about 20 people, with same experiences and we are planning to file a complaint together. I believe, authorities will take strict action and definitely recover our hard earned money. So if you are in Qatar, let's try to connect and complaint together.

Do not fall for this

I bought Pearl package I am so disappointed with their service. You are required to notify them by email for a simple staycation 45 DAYS prior to booking. We tried to book for a hotel but it didn’t materialize. Tried contacting their numbers but they wouldn’t answer our calls. I have sent them emails but they wouldn’t respond, not even to WhatsApp messages. Be very wary when dealing with them.

We too are victims of this scam. Took the membership in Oct 2019 for AED 22000, but never used it due to Covid and when we started reaching out to them in October 22, they always avoided us and never gave us a suitable option for vacation. I would also like to join if we plan to go together for taking this up with authorities.
