Free Evora Walking Tour Guide

Evora is one of the most underrated places of Portugal and probably one of the best. Evora was the favorite destination of Portuguese Kings to take refuge from the city living, to simply relax and unwind.

Built during the Roman times and once the Capital of Portugal, Evora hides history in every corner of it’s historic center that seems to look the same for centuries.

For this reason and many others, the Historic Center of Evora is recognized as a World Heritage Center by UNESCO, since 1986.

So when walking this tour you will discover and experience why Evora is called the City-Museum.

Free Evora Walking Tour map:

Free evora walking tour starting point:.

This tour will start in Jardim Diana. There is no better place to start, than in the place that is in every Evora picture. Navigating inside Evora’s walls can be quite challenging due to its maze like streets. It’s wonderful to explore Evora, and sometimes it may seem that you find a hidden treasure on every corner you take. But getting around with a destination in mind can be difficult. So we recommend using Google maps or some kind of navigation app. If you click on the names of these tour steps, it will open the location on your Google maps.

And don’t be worried about getting lost in Evora. The city is extremely safe and the locals are more than friendly.

Free Evora walking tour stops:

Miradouro do jardim diana viewpoint.

To begin your tour, go to the edge of the Jardim de Diana to enjoy the views of Evora countryside.

Hopefully you are here during spring, because all of these fields are covered with colorful wildflowers, giving you the impressions of staring at a live size fresco.

So while here, enjoy the view, gather all of your energy, because you will need it.

Roman Temple

When you are ready,  head to the Roman Temple in front of the garden.

The construction of this temple is considered to have been started in the first century AD, a time when the whole of the Iberian Peninsula was in control by the Roman Empire.

This temple is one of the most significant and important traces of the Roman Empire in Portugal.

This temple is located on the highest top of the old acropolis of the Roman city, that was here. And due to its construction and location, scholars believe that this was the center of the Roman City.

Of the original temple, it only remains the podium, parts of the columns and fragments of the roof. No other traces of the original temple survived because of the reuses given to this temple.

In 716 the Moors conquered the city and converted the Roman Temple as a Mosk. After the conquest of the Portuguese army in 1165, it was then converted to a Catholic Church. After the construction of the main church in Evora, it was then converted to a watch tower to protect the city. After that it was even used as an animal slaughterhouse.

Museum of Evora

Right next to the Roman Temple you will see the Museum of Evora. If you were wondering if the Roman Temple was the center of the old Roman City, where is the rest of it? Right inside this museum. Built on top of Romans ruins, the origins of this museum goes back to 1840.

This museum has an eclectic collection with over 20,000 pieces of art and historic interest, it is one of the most importants museums in Portugal.

So go inside and you will not be disappointed, especially to see the Roman Ruins. And be carefull, time in this museum goes by very fast.

Tribunal of the Inquisition

When you leave the museum, On the other side of the Roman Temple, you can see the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida. This is where the first Tribunal of the Inquisition in Portugal, used to be.

Although the main building has been through many remodelations since the Inquisition was abolished in 1821, little of the original building remains. But if you step inside, you can still see the original and preserved Courtroom on the ground floor, with six granite framed windows and closed with black wrought iron railings, where people were judged.

A bit down of the Roman Temple you will see the medieval Catedral de Evora, one of the most important Cathedrals in Portugal.

Constructions began in 1186 and were finished in 1250, with a transactional style from the Romanesque to the Gothic, and built almost entirely of granite. Inside you can visit the Cathedral, the cloisters, the Museum, and specially the viewpoint on the Cathedral rooftop.

There are several ticket prices, depending on what you visit, but our recommendation is to buy the one that includes everything. It is a great experience and it will make you feel that you were transported to medieval times.

Rua Cinco de Outubro

When you are done visiting the Cathedral, go down the Rua Cinco de Outubro. This street has many small shops of local products, like leather, tile, cork, rugs, wine, and many others.

Take your time on this street and you will probably find something that you like a lot. And even if the thing you like is too big to take home, Evora has several points of the Portuguese Post Service.

Roman Baths

Before going to the Praça do Giraldo, make a little detour and go to the City Hall of Evora. Inside you will discover an almost intact Roman bath. This perfect example of Romans baths construction, was discovered when doing some renovations on the City Hall building. This is something that happens a lot in the Historic Center of Evora, when a house owner has to make renovations on the house, it is quite possible to uncover some sort of ancient ruins.

The entrance is completely free but it is closed on the weekends.

Caixa de Água da Rua Nova

On your way back to Praça do Giraldo to continue the normal route of this tour, you will see a tower like construction, built inside a corner of a building, It will seem very odd, because it looks like the top of a tower but on street level and the sidewalk seems to be very raised up.

Well this is the end of that big aqueduct that you see when arriving to Evora.

Praça do Giraldo

Praça do Giraldo is the hanging spot for the locals. Named after the Knight Giraldo Geraldes that freed Evora from the several centuries Moorish occupation, in 1167.

The huge church that you see here, Igreja de Santo Antão, to be built, an Roman Arch of Triumph had to be demolished in 1557.

While you are here, step inside this church to see a perfect example of the Late Renaissance period. The gold carving decorated altars, the huge columns supporting the ceiling, and beautiful frescos.

Do you remember the Tribunal of the Inquisition, at the beginning of this tour? Well, it was on this square that the public penitence or burnings of condemned people happened.

And don’t forget to look down to your feet while walking on this square. This is the most original and one of the oldest cobblestones in Portugal.

Igreja de São Francisco

A short walk from the Praça do Giraldo is the Igreja de São Francisco. There are little remains from the original church, built by the Franciscan Order in 1224. It was an extremely simple building, with no decoration or rich materials.

Remodeled in high glamour and riches in the end of the XV Century, when Portugal was a world trading power, this church now represents the economical power Portugal had back in the day. Take a look inside, it is free.

Capela dos Ossos

After the Roman Temple, this is the second most famous attraction In Evora. A little macabre chapel made from the skulls of 5,000 monks.

Right next to the main entrance of the Igreja de São Francisco, is where the entrance of this chapel is.

This chapel was built when three Franciscan Monks started to get worried about the souls of the society that lived in extreme wealth in Evora. They built it to make people ponder on their way of living and reflect about their choices. That’s why on the entrance of the chapel you can read: “Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos” – rough translation: We (bones) that are here, for yours we wait”.

The bones used in this chapel were from forty two cemeteries in Evora, which had to be removed for other constructions.

When you are inside this macabre chappel you will see a white coffin. Inside of it are the bones of the three monks that built this chapel.

Public Market

In front of the Church and Chapel, you can find the Public Market of Evora. If you are staying here for a few days, in a home, buying your supplies here is an excellent choice for fresh and local ingredients.

If you are looking for some traditional pottery, on the corner of the first building, you can find a little shop selling beautiful traditional and handmade pottery, in all sizes.

And right between the two buildings of the market, you can see a small glass construction leading to a stair, going underground. Down there you will find one of the largest wine stores in Evora, protected by the sunlight and with a tremendous variety of local wines.

Palácio de Dom Manuel and public garden

Downhill of the Public Market, is the public garden. The last stop of this walking tour.

At the entrance you will see a Vasco da Gama statue, an important person for locals, due to a legend that the flags of his armada were blessed in the Cathedral of Evora, before departing in the discovery of the maritime route to India.

Enjoy this last stop and take a break, on the kiosk for a drink and simply take in all the tranquility that the locals enjoy. For most of them, money is not the most important, but the time you have and enjoy while you are living.

While in this garden, locate a huge palace. This is the Palácio de Dom Manuel, one of the most beautiful buildings in Evora. Order by the King, Alfonso V in 1468, to build a royal palace, it occupied most of the Saint Francis Convent. The monks were not happy for this, but they were not allowed to have a say.

So take a look inside and around it. It is free and it is a great way to end your tour.

Guided Walking Tour:

This historic center has so much history looking around every corner and that is so true, that when the residents are remodeling the houses, ancient traces of Roman, Moors and more are discovered.

So we highly recommend a guided walking tour with a local. So you don’t miss anything and visit all the most updates locations.

Walking Tour – Évora Stories

Let us share our passion for the city as we lead you on an Évora city tour inspired by the many fascinating stories we plan to share with you.

Welcome to Backcountry Tours

rua-republica

“Nowhere any city, but Évora, was capable to tell me with purity and beauty that I am latin, that I am arab, that I am christian, that I am peninsular, that I am portuguese,- that I am the tragic blend of mystic and pagan blood that made me the miserable man we know.” (TORGA, Miguel. 1942)

“Get in Alentejo unsecured. The raw and dense land, the immobile and acre air, the slip and parched slopes dodge and offer themselves in instinctive reflections. Diving in the horizon, in very slow sunsets, the sun releases the occult.” (DACOSTA, Fernando. 2009)

Art & Culture

“It is more difficult the passage from civilization to culture then the formation of a civilization. Civilization is a collective phenomenon. Culture is an individual phenomenon. There is no culture without civilization, nor civilization that lasts without culture.” (SOBRAL DE ALMADA NEGREIROS, José. In “Ensaios”)

Come to Évora

For us, traveling is something that shapes people; visiting other places and knowing other people is our greatest wealth. Because of this, we like to show Évora, our city, just as it is, without filters and with all the hidden places. Living in Évora also contributes to our country’s history and we take pride in that.

Our tours are rated #1 of all outdoor activities in Évora on TripAdvisor

"We got a referral from a tour company in Lisbon (We Hate Tourism Tours) for João of Backcountry Tours in Evora. We were not disappointed. We only had the day in Evora and thought a tour of this lovely walled city would entice us back the next time in Portugal and it definitely did. Joao is so knowledgeable of not only the City but its history and culture and FOOD!"

"Arrived in Evora without any plans or itinerary and everyone advise only spend a day trip here, I say Joao has shown me it's totally wrong. You can spend 2-3 days here to explore the once Roman town, as well as neighboring villages. Stop by for wine tasting or even Olive tasting. Had a pretty good, historical and education day."

"We organized a trip with João Godinho to see caves with pre-historic human drawings (Escoural Cave). You have to book an appointment in advance as they are closed and only open cave with a pre-booked appointment. Also, there are no buses so the tour was a good option for us. We were very lucky and happy that Joao helped us to organize everything.

"Our guide João is a natural and very upbeat guide. He knows his history inside out and kept us interested and informed all day. The sites we visited are top class but the guided tour turned what would have been a good day into a great one. My favourite things were the bone chapel in Evora and on the megalithic tour the womb-shaped dolmen and the visit to the cork tree farm. It was one of those days when I felt the information was not readily available and a guide filled this void. Loved it."

The arrival of the Romans

The first Romans who came to Portugal cared deeply about the coastal regions and not at all about the interior. However, the Alentejo countryside had fertile soil suitable for growing wheat, so it is not surprising that in 57 BC, the Romans captured the town of Ebora from the Celtic tribe of the Celtici. Sometime during the reign of Augustus, the Romans renamed the town Ebora Liberalitas Julia and proceeded to endow it with amenities typical of a Roman urban settlement. The highest point in the city became the forum or public square, functioning as a market and gathering place. Among the various structures erected was this temple, the temple of Augustus, the first Roman emperor who was revered as a god after his death.

The location

Starting point.

Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval  (10 minutes): Who doesn’t love some royal drama? Evora promises the most fascinating drama there is! Starting small, the dukes of Cadaval, used to be a small branch of the House of Brazanga. Despite the junior status, with the right marriages and connections, they succeeded in reaching the throne. The new King, João IV, as a token of appreciation for his biggest supporters gave them the royal title Duke. And where should possible future Kings live, well of course in a castle! Learn the secrets behind this staggering castle with Clio Muse Tours on your side.

Cathedral of Evora ( 15 minutes ): Evora’s Cathedral is one of the Highlights of the city, not only because of its historical significance, signaling the expulsion of the Arabs in the late 12th century, but also because it is the largest Mideaval church in Portugal, with unique colors and details. Get ready to learn several of the Cathedral’s mysteries, along with exhilarating stories about the Portugal royalty of the 16th century.

Royal Palace of Evora (15 minutes): The Royal Palace of Evora is deeply connected with the reign of King Manuel I. During his reign, apart from the financial peak Portugal experienced thanks to Vasco da Gama’s discovery of a new trade route to India, this era is characterized by the Maneuline architecture style. A very unique style that focuses on the lack of symmetry, the use of semi-circular arches, conical pinnacles, sloping crenelations, and intricately carved stonework that incorporates maritime elements, obviously influenced by the age of exploration. Learn more about the interesting timeline and vast history of the Palace along with all the phases it went through to reach us today in the astonishing shape it is.

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

When it comes to exploring the Alentejo region, you can’t miss the capital of Évora. Only about an hour or so away from Lisbon , Évora is a charming, historic town well worth a visit. I just returned from spending a few nights exploring, and have to tell you all about it.

Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

Évora, Portugal has all the quintessential beauty. Cobbled streets tucked behind fortress walls, historic sights, and incredible dining make this UNESCO World Heritage Site (yes the town itself!) a must-visit. I found myself wishing I could have spent a bit more time in this part of Portugal as it is so lovely. I’d recommend carving out 2-3 nights, making Évora your home base to explore the towns and central valley of Alentejo.

tour of evora

Known for its rich history that dates back more than two millennia, Évora is marked by Roman, Moorish, and Portuguese influences. You see all of this in the well-preserved Old Town, Roman Temple, and medieval walls. The city flourished during the 15th century as a center of learning and the arts under the patronage of the Portuguese kings, becoming a symbol of the Golden Age of Portugal.

Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

Today, an invitation to visit the historic city and all that it has to offer — a booming hotel scene, memorable dining, and a stunning Portuguese landscape. Here’s your guide to visiting Évora and a few things nearby not to miss.

The Évora, Portugal Travel Guide

Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

What to Know Before Visiting

How many days in évora.

While many people take only a day trip from Lisbon, I can’t recommend it more to spend a few days visiting the region. Évora makes for a wonderful base for exploring the valley of Alentejo, I would opt for 2-3 nights. From there, extend your itinerary out to the coastal beach town of Comporta for time by the sea.

Do I need a car to visit Évora?

To visit the town of Évora itself, you will not need a car. But to properly visit the region and wineries, you will need one. I would recommend renting a car at Lisbon Airport and doing the drive on your own. I used Discover Cars , took full insurance, and booked with one of the higher-rated agencies like Sixt.

How do I get to Évora?

A few options are to either take the train from Lisbon (1.5 hours), rent a car in Lisbon and drive (1.5-hour drive), or consider joining a guided tour from Lisbon . I would recommend spending a few nights in the region with a rental car. I use Discover Cars to find the best rental deals.

How is the driving in Évora Portugal?

In the town itself, it is absolute chaos in terms of navigating the narrow streets. I would recommend parking at one of the designated lots on the outside of the city walls and walking in for ease. Once you walk in, everything is very close on foot. Driving in the region in general is very easygoing and relaxed.

The Best Hotels in Évora

Booked in and with a complimentary upgrade on arrival (perks of booking with Kiwi Collection), I stayed two nights in the garden & pool terrace room. The modern design of the property set in the countryside is lovely.

The Best Restaurants in Évora

Restaurante botequim da mouraria.

Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

If you eat one place in Évora, let it be Botequim da Mouraria . It’s an 8-person bar restaurant, where you sit at the counter and are served by the owner himself. Local products and dishes are the highlight here, it was hands down my favorite meal of the trip.

tour of evora

If you’re looking for traditional Alentejo cuisine, Fialho is the spot to go. It runs on the more touristic side but is still an amazing historic restaurant. The stars here are classics like borrego assado (roasted lamb) and whatever appetizers are on your table when you arrive. *Reservation required

Dom Joaquim

On this year’s Michelin Guide, don’t miss Dom Joaquim for traditional and local dishes. It’s one of the most popular restaurants in town for good reason. *Reservation required

Cavalariça Évora

Cavalariça group opened up their location in Évora , don’t miss it while in town. The food is sophisticated and elegant, all to be enjoyed in an art-deco space.

Other Restaurants Saved:

  • Origens , for elevated cuisine
  • Páteo , for classic dishes
  • Enoteca Cartuxa , for a one of the top local favorites
  • Pastelaria Conventual Pão de Rala , for classic pasteries

The Best Things to Do in Évora

See the historic sights in town.

Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

There is no shortage of historical sights to visit in Évora. Begin at the Roman Temple of Évora (Temple Romano), often referred to as the Temple of Diana. It is a well-preserved landmark that showcases the city’s ancient Roman architectural prowess and cultural heritage.

Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

The Chapel of Bones , or “Capela dos Ossos,” is a hauntingly beautiful and eerie site. Constructed in the 17th century by Franciscan monks, the chapel serves as a reflection on the transient nature of human life. Its walls and columns are meticulously lined with the bones and skulls of over 5,000 exhumed bodies from the overcrowded city cemeteries. Above the chapel’s entrance, an ominous inscription reads “Nós ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos,” which translates to “We, the bones that are here, await yours.”

Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

The Cathedral of Évora was one of my favorite visits. You can take the stairs to the rooftop for incredible views. Afterward, go for a walk down in the cloisters that line the interior courtyard.

A few other sights to consider are the 16th-century Aqueduto da Água de Prata which is over 9 kilometers long. And a visit to Museum Frei Manuel do Cenácul in the former Episcopal Palace which has a diverse collection of art, archaeology, and ethnography.

Do Some Local Shopping

Ultimate Travel Guide to Visiting Évora, Portugal

In the town of Évora, there are a few local stores to consider popping into like Oxalá or O Cesto Artesanato . Stock up on local olive oils, wines, and ceramics. Another fun store to pop into is Livraria Fonte de Letras , a bookstore that has books in several languages.

When it comes to Alentejo, you can’t miss the famous wine route. There are several wineries in the region and close to Évora. On this trip, I visited Fitapreta Vinhos , about 15 minutes outside of town. The setting is stunning, home to several ancient varietals that they only produce today. It’s well worth booking a tasting in advance. Other wineries to consider booking are Ervideira , Adega Mayor , Herdade da Malhadinha Nova , and L’AND Vineyards .

Visit Nearby Villages

If you have the time, I’d go for a scenic drive through the region to explore nearby villages. I’d start by going all the way to Monsaraz , a charming medieval village perched atop a hill with stunning views over the Alqueva Dam and the surrounding vineyards. Its well-preserved ancient walls, narrow cobblestone streets, and whitewashed houses offer a picturesque step back in time. In town, you can see the old fortress, and be sure to stop into Casa Tial to shop for local goods.

Another town to stop into is Corval , a small village renowned for its traditional pottery and ceramics industry. Known as one of the most important pottery centers in the country, you can stop into several local ceramicists and shops. I loved Olaria Tavares for their unique designs.

Closer to Évora, I’d pop into Montemor-o-Novo as well for the old streets, a tour of the castle above the village, and historic sights. It’s a perfect quick pitstop on the way to or from Lisbon.

I never leave the country without travel insurance. It provides comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong (ie. illness, injury, theft, and cancelations, etc.). I use it frequently for my travels to stay protected.

My favorite companies that offer the best coverage and rates are:

  • World Nomads (best for all-around)
  • Safety Wing (best for frequent travelers)

Why We Don’t Recommend A Day Trip to Evora Portugal

What To Do In Evora Portugal

A day trip to Evora Portugal offers a chance to explore this UNESCO world heritage site. Discover all the things to do in Evora and how to plan your trip

The main square of Evora, Portugal

Evora Portugal is picturesque. With a wealth of classic buildings, old-world charm, Roman ruins and more, Evora has become one of the top destinations in Portugal. The fresh atmosphere and breathtaking architecture has led it to become one of the most popular day trips from Lisbon , and it has recently become a destination of its own for those traveling to the country.  There are more things to do in Evora Portugal than most people expect when they arrive. So why don’t we recommend a day trip to Evora Portugal? Read on and discover.

Our Day Trip to Evora Portugal

Table of Contents

Our first visit to Evora Portugal came near the end of our tour of Southern Portugal. We were completely relaxed having just spent a few days as beach bums in the Algarve . But, with just one day left before we flew home to Canada, we decided to explore the medieval city of Evora Portugal. Evora is in the Alentejo, Portugal region, less than 2 hours drive from Cascais and nearby Lisbon . We had rented a car for our family travel in Portugal , so it was easy to get around. Evora, Portugal has been consistently touted as one of the best places to visit in Portugal. Most of the Evora attractions are conveniently located within the city walls. So, we figured from Cascais a day trip from Lisbon to Evora is doable.

The town of Evora, Portugal seen through a grassy field

Pro-Tip: If you do not have your own car, there is public transit via either bus or train from Lisbon to Evora

We headed out bright and early and took the toll road to avoid traffic. We didn’t need the help of the GPS, as it was a straight shot on the highway from our family-friendly accommodation in Cascais. Soon, we could see the walled city of Evora in the distance. Hoping to avoid the parking chaos we experienced in Sintra , we picked one of the many parking lots just outside the city walls and walked to the town.

About Evora Portugal

Considered by many to be one of the most timeless cities in Portugal, The UNESCO World Heritage city of Evora is rich with history, culture, architecture, and more. The city dates back more than 5,000 years. It was originally known as Ebora by the Lusitanians  and was their regional capital. It was conquered by the Romans in 57 BC and began the growth that led to the popular city walls that help lend Evora it’s unique ambiance.

The city was conquered by the Moors in 715 along with other cities in the region such as Sintra . which led to further development before finally being recaptured in 1115. Between 1385–1580 it came under Manueline rule. During the reign of Manuel I and John III, Evora became the capital of culture. This time of growth led to some of the most iconic architecture in Evora as well as many of the magnificent monasteries that dot southern Portugal .

Most of those looking for things to do in Evora Portugal spend their time in the old town. Still partially enclosed by medieval walls, The Evora old town includes historic monuments, religious sites, and buildings within walking distance from each other. It is this rich history, beautiful weather, and location that has led Evora to be named one of the Most Liveable Cities in Portugal. But this beauty has also led to a wealth of tourist traffic. And a day trip to Evora Portugal could mean fighting heavy crowds.

Things To Do In Evora Portugal

It wasn’t long ago that a day trip to Evora was an easy jaunt. It was far less touristy than areas such as the Algarve or Sintra. But some of that off-the-beaten-track feel has changed in the past few years. Evora has experienced a tourism boom, and with all of the things to do in Evora Portugal, it was really just a matter of time before this happened.

If you plan on making a trip to Evora, plan wisely. Remember that summer temperatures can be hot. And crowds can get busy, especially on weekends and holidays. No matter when you go in Evora, it’s hard not to be humbled by the history and magic of this historic city.

Roman Temple (Temple of Diana)

As we made our way past the medieval walls of Evora Portugal, we instantly knew we were in the right place. We spotted the ancient Roman Temple almost immediately. The towering pillars are also known as the Temple of Diana. Although there has never been proof that the Evora Roman temple was ever dedicated to the ancient goddess of the hunt. The Roman ruins in Evora consist of 14 surviving columns topped by Corinthian capitals on a granite base.

Though it was built in the 2nd or 3rd century, the Roman Temple is in remarkably good shape. Apparently, the Temple was walled up in the middle ages and used as a slaughterhouse which is why when it was excavated it was in had retained much of its original character. The Roman ruins stand out against the more classic Portuguese architecture in Evora, making it one of the best things to see in Evora.

Day Trip To Evora Portugal Roman Ruins

Evora Cathedral (Se)

Another item on the extensive Evora things-to-do list is the Evora Cathedral. This relatively plain-looking building sits across from the Roman Temple. The outside features two asymmetrical stone towers (one tower is turreted and the other is topped by a blue cone). The Evora Cathedral, also called the “Se” took 50 years to complete. From the outside, it looks more like a fortress. This is due to its weathered granite facade. Make sure to take time to admire the portal between the towers. This contains a wonderfully sculpted depiction of the Apostles.

The interior of the Evora Cathedral is much more impressive. It features an 18th-century high altar and polished marble chancel. A visit to the treasury is a must. The treasury also acts as a museum of sacred artifacts. It contains rare and priceless pieces made of gold, silver, and other precious metals. Finish your tour of the Cathedral by wandering around the cloisters to get a view of the size of the cathedral. The visit is made more incredible by pairing your time in Portugal with a visit to the incredible Monasteries of Portugal.

Day trip to Evora Church of Our Lady of Grace

Praca do Giraldo

After exploring the Cathedral, stroll along Rua 5 de Outubro. Here you’ll find many stores selling various authentic handicrafts and furniture. There are a lot of items featuring cork, for which the Alentejo region is known. Pause to take in the scenery around Praca do Giraldo. The beautiful fountain that acts as the cornerstone of Evora’s main square is a great spot to relax. To escape the afternoon sun, head through the square to the Church of St. Francis.

Evora in Portugal is a UNESCO world heritage site. This walled city is a couple of hours driving distance from Lisbon making a day trip to Evora possible.

Church of St. Francis (Igreja Real de São Francisco)

Built between 1475 – 1550, the Gothic-style Church of St. Francis is a must-visit for those looking for things to do in Evora Portugal. As you enter, you will immediately notice that the church is immense and has a single vaulted nave. The Church of St. Francis is the largest of its kind in all of Portugal. The main draw of this Evora attraction, however, is the small room behind the altar. There is a spectacularly decorated altar hidden from the main area of the church. This is the location of that draws many visitors to the Church of St. Francis, the Chapel of Bones.

What to do in Evora Portugal Church of St. Francis

The Bone Chapel Of The Church Of St. Francis (Capela dos Ossos)

Head to the backroom at the of St. Francis and prepare to be amazed. Although the idea of using human bones as artwork in what’s known as an Ossuary may sound macabre, the practice was quite common long ago. From Paris to London, Lima, Peru, and more catacombs and ossuaries were often a way to get through times of mass illness and famine. According to the literature on the church, The Bone Chapel of Evora was built by a monk during the 16th-century church. His goal was to encourage people to reflect on the transitory nature of life. WAs you enter, pause and read the sign by the door. It reads “ Nós ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos” . Translated it meant “ We bones that are here await yours” .

The Evora Bone Chapel was decorated using the bones of approximately 5,000 bodies exhumed from the city’s graveyards. It offers a striking display across all walls and all 8 columns of the chapel decorated with human bones. The bone chapel has only 3 small windows allowing minimal light into the chapel. This contributes to a somewhat eerie atmosphere. This is further enhanced by two corpses hanging by a chain, one adult and one child on one of the walls. It’s a truly beautiful display. But those who scare easily, or those visiting Evora with kids may find it overwhelming. Personally, I was relieved that my one-year-old, C, was not old enough to understand what he was seeing.

Inside the Bone Chapel in Evora, Portugal.

Church of Our Lady of Grace (Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Graca)

Spend some time walking the cobblestone streets of Evora admiring the compliments and clashes of the Roman, Gothic, Manueline, and Baroque architecture. Then head down Rua da Republic on your way back to the parking lot. But first, pause to take a look at the intriguing Church of Our Lady of Grace. What caught my attention the most about this Evora attraction was the four stone statues atop the baroque facade. The figures seem to be supporting massive globes.

Aqueduct of Silver Water (Aqueduto da Agua de Prata)

Head just outside of the Evora city walls for another one of the impressive Evora things to do. The Aquaduct of Silver Water was high on my list for our day trip to Evora. The aqueduct, completed in 1530, was designed by Francisco de Arruda, famously known as the designer of the Tower of Belem . Although we saw several aqueducts in Portugal already, the Evora aqueduct stands out as an impressive piece of architecture. At the end of the aqueduct shops, houses, and cafes have been built to fit perfectly into the arches.

Don’t Do a Day Trip to Evora!

So all of these amazing experiences culminate in a day trip to Evora Portugal that is unforgettable. So why don’t we recommend a day trip to Evora? After all, visiting the walled city of Evora was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal . The truth is that one day in Evora Portugal just isn’t enough. This city has so much to offer and a visit isn’t complete without staying in one of the incredible local accommodations, having morning coffee in the square, and exploring the city by night.

Evora is an easy day trip from Lisbon. At only 1.5 hours from Lisbon, Evora is easy. However, for a longer trip, like 10 days in Portugal, we would definitely turn our day trip to Evora into an overnight stay. This way we could have explored the city even more. There are also many interesting sites just outside of Evora that we would have loved to visit if we had more time.

Friday 6th of May 2022

I am taking my husband for a quick trip to Lisbon (only 4 days, minus travel time) from the States. I had wanted to fit in both Evora & half a day at Sintra but I'm afraid that might be pushing it. If you had to choose one, would it be Evora or Sintra? This will be our first time in Portugal. Thanks!

Hi Jennifer.

This is such a tough question! Personally, I think if I HAD to choose one, I'd go with Sintra. But it's a VERY close race.
