Packaged tours or DIY travel: which is better?

Any trip involves a significant amount of time and preparation to plan. When deciding to go on a trip and before you plan your itinerary , you have a choice between booking a packaged tour (also known as organised or guided tours) or do-it-yourself (DIY) travel. DIY travel planning involves planning your trip from scratch , including planning and scheduling all your flights, accommodation, travel insurance, transfers, and activities yourself using the internet.

Both types of travels will give you a pleasant trip. Each type has its benefits and costs. Let’s see what the considerations are when choosing between DIY travel and packaged tours.

DIY vs packaged tours - which is better?

Packaged tours

Packed tours have several costs and benefits.

Benefits of packaged tours

The benefits of organised tours include the following:

Convenience factors

  • Guided tours are perfect for new travellers who feel overwhelmed at the prospect of planning their trips .
  • With a packaged tour, you don’t have to worry about any planning as the tour operator does everything for you. This is convenient if you dislike researching and doing comparisons between different websites.
  • For travellers who don’t want to travel alone, a packaged tour can provide security and be a great way to meet new friends.
  • There is safety in numbers.
  • The transportation provided on packaged tours is very comfortable and convenient. Coach travel is usually on luxury buses with free wi-fi with enough legroom.
  • You never have to wait for public transport to move between sights and activities.
  • Tour operators offer guided tours to suit different budgets and styles, from basic backpacker-style tours to all-inclusive guided tours.
  • Some countries require the booking of an organised tour before considering your visa application.
  • Many packaged tours also include priority access to signature experiences to save time and stay on schedule.
  • Packaged tours may also include destinations off-the-beaten-path that may be difficult to get to for DIY travellers.
  • The accommodation on packaged tours is comfortable and the tour operator has tested the hotels and bed and breakfasts.
  • As long as you stick to your tour group, you will not easily get lost. And if you do, the tour guide will look for you.
  • Packaged tours are easier to arrange than DIY group travel.
  • Depending on the type of packaged tour, you can have more peace of mind as you never have to worry about flight delays or other surprises. With a packaged tour, that includes flights, your tour operator will take care of any consequences because of unexpected circumstances.

Packaged tours or DIY Travel

Local expertise

  • Most tour guides on packaged tours are locals and have expert knowledge on places to visit, where to eat, etc. They can also give you insight into the culture of the people in your destination. This could be a way to discover hidden gems, which can give you a more in-depth experience of your destination.
  • A packaged tour can make visiting a country where you may find communication difficult much easier since the tour guides can speak the local language.

Budgeting benefits

  • Usually, packaged tours include accommodation and transfers. Packaged tours may make budgeting for an upcoming trip easier since it will include most items, leaving little extra details for which to budget.
  • Signature experiences could cost less on a packaged tour since the tour operators have built relationships with suppliers and “buy in bulk”.
  • Once you have paid for your packaged tour, you don’t have to worry about exchange rate fluctuations requiring you to pay more for your hotel or sightseeing.

Costs of packaged tours

Packaged tours also have some costs, including the following:

Lack of depth & flexibility

  • Some packaged tours cover many of the major sights and activities but are fast-paced with little time at each stop. Not only does this mean you may not see everything you wanted, but it can be exhausting.
  • With a packaged tour you may end up seeing sights you had no interest in or not seeing something you wanted to see.
  • Sometimes tour groups are large, and you may not get an opportunity to ask the travel guide all the questions you want. Large tour groups can also waste precious sightseeing time if it takes longer to get the tour group together before leaving a stop.
  • These tours allow no flexibility for sightseeing options. With these tours, you will see the main sights in a city only. If you see something from the bus or near a sight your group has stopped at, you cannot go off to explore further.
  • Packaged tours can lead to frustration. Some people do sightseeing and browsing museums faster and then have to wait for the rest of the group.
  • Other travellers are not too fond of large tour groups since they can take over an entire activity or sight leaving little space for DIY travellers to explore.

Budgeting concerns

  • Make sure what items are included and excluded from a tour package as it is not always clear. You need to know what you will have to budget for outside of the price of the tour package.
  • Not all packaged tour have guaranteed departures. You may pay for your chosen tour only to find out that due to limited bookings it has been cancelled.

Possible packaged tour options

These companies are excellent for packaged tours:

  • Intrepid Tours
  • Encounters Travel
  • G Adventures

You can also make use of a website that aggregates packaged tours from different tour operators. Here you can choose from:

  • Love Holidays

DIY vs packaged tours - which is better?

DIY travel planning

As with the packaged tours, DIY travel planning has many costs and benefits.

DIY travel planning benefits

I love DIY travel. For me, it has significant benefits, which include:

Flexibility

  • You have complete control over your itinerary and can spend as much or as little time as you want at each sight. If you wake up one morning and feel exhausted, you can decide to have a quiet day instead.
  • Being in control of your travels, you may discover hidden gems and local favourites instead of just focusing on the best-known sights.
  • You don’t have to wait for a tour group to finish sightseeing at a stop before moving on.
  • Introverts may prefer DIY travel as they can control the level of socialisation they can endure on a trip.
  • DIY travel gives you the ability to find cheaper deals, but this may take time and effort.

Local Experiences

  • Since you don’t have a tour guide to rely on, you are sometimes forced to reach out to locals, which can be an eye-opening experience.
  • It is easier to get lost on your own, but that also gives you the opportunity to get to know a place better!

Best benefit

  • Planning everything yourself can be an empowering and exciting experience. Planning a trip teaches you new skills.

Costs of DIY travel planning

DIY travel has some negative aspects as well:

  • It is challenging to plan a trip to multiple destinations as you have to consider so many elements. You have to consider the costs for each element, which requires significant research.
  • Planning your trip yourself can take a very long time, especially if you like to explore many options.
  • Being responsible for all the aspects of your journey can overwhelm you and be extremely stressful. For many people, this would completely negate the idea of going away to relax.
  • You have to depend on yourself when there is a crisis during your trip – there is no tour guide you can turn to for help.
  • Waiting for public transport between sights and activities can waste precious time, which can be frustrating.
  • DIY group travel may be difficult to coordinate between all the members of the group.

Alternatives to DIY travel planning and packaged tours

There are some alternative options instead of having to just choose between DIY travel and packaged tours.

Shorter packaged tours

  • A packaged tour is ideal if you want to have a specific cultural or activity-based tour lasting from half a day to several days. If you like food, a food tour is an excellent example of a speciality tour.
  • Consider booking full or half-day tours on your trip instead of a packaged tour that includes a multi-day itinerary.
  • Packaged tours that limit the number of participants may be a better option than large group tours.
  • Some packaged tours have a fixed itinerary, but also allow free days where tourists get time to explore their destination on their own. This could be a better option if you do want some flexibility to explore a city on your own.

Alternative options

  • I firmly believe that everyone should consider free city walking tours. Almost every famous town has free walking tours; volunteers of tourism offer usually manage these tours or you can consider an audio walking tour for a different experience .
  • For a more in-depth experience of a destination, consider hiring a guide. This will give you not only more insight into the destination, but the tour guide can provide guidance on other less known sights and activities in the destination and the best places to eat. Hiring a guide gives you complete control over your itinerary.
  • Another option you can consider instead of a packaged tour is is to hire a driver and a car. This is ideal if you visit a large country with sights that are far apart. Even with hiring a driver, there is a choice between fixed itineraries vs flexible itineraries where you have more input into what you would like to see and do. If you get a driver that speaks English and knows his country well, you have found a treasure!
  • An alternative to a packed day tour is the popular Hop-on-hop-off buses that usually have a circular route that allows you to hop off when you want to spend time a specific stop and hop back on when you are ready to explore further. This is one of my favourite ways to explore a city when I have little time.

The verdict

The best option will depend on the travelling you like. You also need to consider the following factors:

  • Legal requirements for visa purposes;
  • The duration of your trip;
  • The sights you want to see;
  • What pace you like to travel at;
  • Your budget; and
  • Your desired level of structure or flexibility.

Answering these questions will guide you in the direction you should take. If you just want to explore a destination without worrying about any of the arrangements, then a packaged tour is best for you. On the other hand, if you want flexibility and control over your itinerary, then DIY travel is the way to go. If budget is your deciding factor, first find a packaged tour you like and do a rough estimate of how much a DIY trip will cost you. Compare the results and see whether there is a big difference between the two.

Both resulted in pleasant trips…

A friend of mine usually uses packaged tours. She does not like making travel arrangements, especially when visiting multiple countries on a trip. However, she has told me when she is on one of these tours, she always wanted more flexibility regarding sightseeing and exploring lesser-known restaurants and sights. She also wonders whether she could have paid less by making her own arrangements.

My preference is for DIY travel planning with a scattering of shorter organised tours, depending on the destination.

The best way to find out what you like is to try both types of travel and then decide which one you prefer for future trips.

Domestic vs. International Travel: What’s Different?

  • January 18, 2020

airport departures

Are you planning your first trip abroad? As it exciting as it may seem, if you’ve never left the comfort of your home country, you might want to make sure you’re ready for the various hiccups you might run into along the way.

While traveling internationally can present more challenges than domestic travel, research and careful planning make them easier to conquer. And, there are so many unique experiences to have outside of your own country and culture, those challenges are often worth dealing with.

Here are some of the biggest differences you should expect to encounter.

7 Big Challenges When Traveling Abroad

Before we get started, it’s important to say that both your personal skillset as well as your destination greatly impact some of these challenges and differences. For example, if you are an American that grew up speaking Spanish at home, a trip to a predominantly Spanish-speaking country will be easier for you than for someone with zero Spanish ability.

Now, on to the list.

1. You Need a Passport

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but if you want to leave your home country and take an international trip or vacation, you are going to need to get a passport if you don’t have one. If you already have one but have never used it, you will want to check that it has at least six month left before it expires. Otherwise, an immigration officer might deny you entry.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time when applying for your passport too. Both  American  and  Canadian  passport processing times can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. There are some expedited options available for a fee if you find yourself in a hurry, but the safer play is to plan well ahead and give yourself lots of lead time.

2. Language Barriers

If you have never ventured to a country that primary speaks a different language than you, let me tell you from experience it can be a bit rough at times. Language barriers though come in a spectrum and they aren’t black and white.

For example, you might know a few basic Spanish words that will help you ask about where a bathroom is while visiting a non-touristy area in Costa Rica or you might spend a week in an all-inclusive resort in Bali where all the employees speak English. On the other end of the spectrum you could find yourself asking a Portuguese speaker in a remote area of Brazil for directions or find yourself sitting in a local restaurant in southern Taiwan staring at a Mandarin menu.

No matter where you end up falling along that spectrum, language barriers can make even the simplest activities, like ordering a cup of coffee, much more difficult.

3. Culture Shock

For short international and overseas trips, this probably won’t be a big deal. Culture shock usually doesn’t show its most viscous side until you’ve been away from home for at least several weeks or longer. That doesn’t mean you won’t experience a bit of it though.

Like language barriers, culture shock exists on a spectrum too. While traveling you may suddenly feel uncomfortable with how close people are standing  next to you in a line, which might be the normal distance in their culture but might make you feel unsafe. Or, you might end up not being able to stomach the local cuisine and find yourself longing for a comfort meal from home.

The worst part of culture shock is that it can sneak up on you from out of nowhere. If it does, just remind yourself one of the reasons you decided to visit a different country was to experience new things.

4. Transportation Options

One of the biggest mistakes many novice international travelers make is to skip researching the current transportation situation at their destination or destinations of choice. Getting from airport to airport is only a small part of all the traveling you’ll most likely be doing.

Getting a feel for how you will be getting from place to place before you get your boots on the ground will save you a lot of time and many headaches. A couple questions you need to research are –

  • Is there a public transportation infrastructure and if so is it easy to understand?
  • If there is public transportation, is it safe and reliable?
  • Will you have to rent a car and if so, what are the driving laws and regulations?
  • Are there ride sharing services like Uber, Lyft, and Grab?

Planning on how you are going to get around once you arrive is key to an enjoyable experience overall.

5. Mobile Phone Plans

You will never understand the true value of having access to the whole of the Internet on demand as much as when you are struggling to find an address in a foreign country. Your smartphone is an amazing travel tool. Unfortunately, it’s not going to do you much good without a functioning and affordable data plan.

Getting a data plan in a foreign country used to be a challenge, but it’s getting easier and easier these days. You might be able to have your current provider activate an international data plan for a not-too-expensive surcharge before starting your travels. Some countries have prepaid data merchants selling temporary SIM cards right in the arrival halls of their airports.

And, if you are a  Google Fi  user, you should already be good to go without any additional homework as the service will work in a ton of different countries.

6. Currency and Exchange Rates

When you take a trip within your own country, you don’t have to worry too much about access to cash. Your debit card should work in almost any ATM and you always have credit cards as a backup. But, dealing with a different country’s financial system can be a major headache.

If you are from Los Angeles and take a trip to New York City, you are using greenbacks, so you don’t need to make any kind of currency conversion. However, say you run out of pocket money and need to use an ATM. Your bank freezes the transaction due to you being out of your normal network. If you make an effort to make withdraws during business hours, you can always call the bank and get it sorted out quickly.

Now, let’s say you are from Los Angeles and you take a trip to Hong Kong. Trying to contact your bank requires either staying up very late or waking up very early due to the time difference. You’re much more likely to have an ATM or credit card security problem when traveling overseas as well, even if you call the financial institutions and alert them of your travel plans.

Aside from all the potential technical issues, you also need to take exchange rates into consideration every time you buy something.

Piggybacking on the idea of time zones and time differences from the problem above about getting in touch with your bank, jet lag is another potential issue when you go on an international trip. It’s not going to be for every trip of course, like if you live in Texas and are taking a trip just over the border. But, if you’re flying from NYC to London or from Houston to Singapore you re going to experience the joys of jet lag.

For first timers, it’s going to most likely hit you like a freight train. You will feel fine and then out of nowhere you’ll run out of energy. You will feel like the health bar of a character in a video games looks when it goes from 100 to 0.

You can try to mitigate jet lag with some careful pre-flight planning, but it’s almost impossible to completely negate.

Should I Even Bother Going to a Different Country?

While all of that might seem like too much to take on, in most cases the hurdles are worth the payoff. Additionally, the good news is that once your work your way through some of the challenges, like getting your passport for example, you don’t have to revisit them for years. And, many of the others get easier to manage the more experience you get with traveling internationally.

The benefits of visiting different countries and cultures generally far outweigh the drawbacks like jet lag and culture shock. Furthermore, a little bit of planning goes a long way, and the whole process gets easier with experience.

Happy travels!

What Is a Road Trip Meaning?

By Michael Ferguson

Road trips are an exciting way to explore new places and create unforgettable memories. The concept of a road trip is simple, yet powerful – it involves traveling by car or other vehicles on a journey that spans several days or weeks. In this article, we’ll explore the meaning of a road trip and why it’s such a popular way to travel.

What is a Road Trip?

A road trip is a journey taken by car, motorcycle, or other vehicles on roads that span long distances. It usually involves multiple stops along the way, with travelers spending some time in each place before moving on to the next destination. Road trips can be spontaneous or carefully planned out, depending on personal preferences.

Why Do People Take Road Trips?

The reasons why people take road trips are diverse and varied. Some people enjoy the sense of freedom and adventure that comes with being on the open road, while others like to explore new places and discover hidden gems along the way. For some travelers, road trips are an opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones or friends.

The Benefits of Taking a Road Trip

There are many benefits to taking a road trip. For one thing, it allows you to see parts of the country (or world) that you might not otherwise have experienced. You can also create your own itinerary and set your own pace – there’s no need to rush through tourist attractions or stick to someone else’s schedule.

Another benefit of taking a road trip is that it can be more affordable than other forms of travel. You can often save money on airfare and lodging by opting for a car-based journey instead.

How to Plan Your Own Road Trip

If you’re interested in planning your own road trip, there are several things you’ll need to consider before hitting the pavement. First, you’ll need to decide on your route and destinations. Then, you’ll need to determine your budget and make reservations for lodging or campgrounds along the way.

It’s also important to prepare your vehicle for the journey. This may involve getting an oil change, checking the tires and brakes, and making sure all of your paperwork (e.g., insurance, registration) is up-to-date.

One Way to Deal With Someone on A Power Trip

Hint: many who throw their weight around don’t feel all that powerful..

Posted September 17, 2019 | Reviewed by Ekua Hagan

Aleksander Kaczmarek/Getty Images Pro

Sure, there are people out there who like to use power to control other people—that’s pretty much the definition of a power trip. But is your boss, coworker, ex-friend, or estranged relative really one of them?

Not necessarily.

Not everybody who seems to be on a power trip actually is. Even the most controlling, domineering person in your life may simply be… protecting herself.

Self-protection isn’t the only alternative explanation for an apparent power trip. But it’s one that’s often overlooked.

If you can spot self-protection in action, you’re more likely to respond effectively and even potentially help the person heal.

The Power of Self-Protection

Most of us, if we’ve been hurt badly enough in the past, will prioritize doing whatever it takes to stay emotionally and physically safe.

Some of the behaviors we use as a shield can easily be mistaken for something more aggressive. Here are just a few examples:

  • Dictating the details of how things play out to make sure we don’t get hurt again
  • Requiring lots of information upfront before we agree to do things
  • Changing our minds after agreeing to something that makes us nervous
  • Reducing or eliminating contact with people who feel dangerous

All of these behaviors can come across as power-tripping. But self-protection is not about enjoying power; it’s about trying to ensure safety.

Sometimes, self-protection requires us to remove ourselves from certain relationships. There are various ways of doing this, ranging from “ ghosting ” (disappearing without explanation) to having a respectful conversation in which we clearly state our needs and boundaries in a way that others can choose to act on, or not, with the understanding that we hope they’ll be able to do so.

Mostly, when we’re in self-defense mode, we’re not especially polite. We might come across as unreasonable, stubborn, or even aggressive.

Think about it: If you’re at a backyard barbecue, and your shorts catch fire, you’re going to make a beeline for the swimming pool without concern for whose Coke you knock over. While you’re dashing to the pool, your only thought is for your own safety.

Even if we don’t feel especially powerful, our self-protection can make us look like power-hungry control freaks.

Refusing to return someone’s phone call, from their point of view, is just rude. Even if the truth is we’re scared of what might happen if we talk to them.

Leaving relationships, or acting inconsistently within them because of our own ambivalence, can come across as a power trip because we’re controlling the contact schedule. Sometimes we’re available; other times, we’re not. We decide from moment to moment what we can tolerate.

To the person on the receiving end, we’re just messing with them.

How to Respond

If you’re on the other side, looking at someone who appears to be on a power trip, there are some questions you might consider. To your knowledge…

Has that person experienced physical harm, emotional pain, or deep disappointment in relationships?

How secure does he seem, in general? How’s his overall self-image ?

Is it possible that the “power trip” is really just a need for safety?

If the relationship is important to you, don’t skip over self-protection as a possible explanation for behavior that appears power-driven.

If it might be the case that the person is protecting himself, how can you help him feel safer, especially in the relationship you share?

Here are a few ways to provide safety for people who’ve been hurt and/or traumatized in relationships:

  • Ask permission. Ask about timing, locations, activities, topics that are OK to discuss… anything that the person seems anxious to control. These are important to her, so let her decide what feels OK.
  • Offer choices. Same as above, and let the person know you’re open to hearing her ideas and preferences. Respect her choices, as long as they don’t directly violate your personal boundaries.
  • Don’t push. Fear of being dominated often goes hand in hand with concerns about safety. Never try to coerce someone who’s been traumatized into doing what you want them to do.
  • Be patient. Intrusive self-protective behaviors stem from past harm, not malice. People need time, understanding, and acceptance in order to heal.

own trip meaning

These behaviors represent the opposite of what most of us feel like doing when someone is throwing their weight around. It’s human nature to want to push back against anything that feels like an inappropriate power-grab.

So if the relationship is not that important to you, you may choose simply not to deal with someone who seems to be on a power trip.

But now that you know it could be something deeper, you can make an informed choice about your own response.

A prominent Long Island pediatrician was killed when she tumbled out of a moving Airstream trailer — still clutching the door’s handle — and onto an upstate highway during a family road trip over the weekend, according to state police and kin.

Dr. Monika Woroniecka — a 58-year-old married mom and children’s allergy and immunology specialist with Stony Brook Medicine — was in the 2024 silver trailer with other family members when she fell through the door shortly after 3 p.m. and onto State Route 12E in Watertown in a freak accident,  said police  and family.

Woroniecka’s husband, Robert, 59, was driving the gray 2019 Ram pickup truck pulling the trailer at the time, according to a press release.

Motorists who witnessed the frightening fatal fall said the passenger-side door of the Airstream flew open, helped by the wind — while the doctor was clutching its handle, police said.

Dr. Monika Woroniecka

The helpless woman landed on the shoulder of the highway, striking her head.

She was rushed to Samaritan Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The traffic accident came as Woroniecka and other relatives boarded the trailer for the final 20 minutes of a road trip from Stony Brook, LI, where the family lives, the troopers said.

The victim worked at Stony Brook Medicine since the early 2000s, according to her medical profile .

“She enjoys working with children and their families and developing a long-term relationship with families while guiding them through chronic allergy-related conditions,” the profile said. “Dr. Woroniecka’s native language is Polish [and] draws Polish-speaking families from far distances.

“Dr. Woroniecka likes to travel, hike, exercise, and spend time with family and friends,” the post adds.

Her grieving family acknowledged to The Post on Sunday that the victim was a doctor on the island, as did the state police, but both declined further comment.

Officials at Stony Brook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

What to Know About Tech Companies Using A.I. to Teach Their Own A.I.

As artificial intelligence developers run out of data to train their models, they are turning to “synthetic data” — data made by the A.I. itself.

own trip meaning

By Cade Metz and Stuart A. Thompson

Cade Metz reports on artificial intelligence. Stuart Thompson reports on disinformation.

OpenAI, Google and other tech companies train their chatbots with huge amounts of data culled from books, Wikipedia articles, news stories and other sources across the internet. But in the future, they hope to use something called synthetic data.

That’s because tech companies may exhaust the high-quality text the internet has to offer for the development of artificial intelligence. And the companies are facing copyright lawsuits from authors , news organizations and computer programmers for using their works without permission. (In one such lawsuit, The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft.)

Synthetic data, they believe, will help reduce copyright issues and boost the supply of training materials needed for A.I. Here’s what to know about it.

What is synthetic data?

It’s data generated by artificial intelligence.

Does that mean tech companies want A.I. to be trained by A.I.?

Yes. Rather than training A.I. models with text written by people, tech companies like Google, OpenAI and Anthropic hope to train their technology with data generated by other A.I. models.

Does synthetic data work?

Not exactly. A.I. models get things wrong and make stuff up . They have also shown that they pick up on the biases that appear in the internet data from which they have been trained . So if companies use A.I. to train A.I., they can end up amplifying their own flaws.

Is synthetic data widely used by tech companies right now?

No. Tech companies are experimenting with it. But because of the potential flaws of synthetic data, it is not a big part of the way A.I. systems are built today.

So why do tech companies say synthetic data is the future?

The companies think they can refine the way synthetic data is created. OpenAI and others have explored a technique where two different A.I. models work together to generate synthetic data that is more useful and reliable.

One A.I. model generates the data. Then a second model judges the data, much like a human would, deciding whether the data is good or bad, accurate or not. A.I. models are actually better at judging text than writing it.

“If you give the technology two things, it is pretty good at choosing which one looks the best,” said Nathan Lile, the chief executive of the A.I. start-up SynthLabs.

The idea is that this will provide the high-quality data needed to train an even better chatbot.

Does this technique work?

Sort of. It all comes down to that second A.I. model. How good is it at judging text?

Anthropic has been the most vocal about its efforts to make this work. It fine-tunes the second A.I. model using a “constitution” curated by the company’s researchers. This teaches the model to choose text that supports certain principles, such as freedom, equality and a sense of brotherhood, or life, liberty and personal security. Anthropic’s method is known as “Constitutional A.I.”

Here’s how two A.I. models work in tandem to produce synthetic data using a process like Anthropic’s:

own trip meaning

An A.I. model is asked to create multiple responses to a prompt like: Explain the moon landing to a 6-year-old.

Each response receives a preference score . The response with the highest score is used.

Those scores are determined by another A.I. model , which can judge responses based on truthfulness, honesty and helpfulness.

The A.I. model is trained with its own set of values , sometimes called a constitution, which can include more complex values like fighting discrimination .

Even so, humans are needed to make sure the second A.I. model stays on track. That limits how much synthetic data this process can generate. And researchers disagree on whether a method like Anthropic’s will continue to improve A.I. systems.

Does synthetic data help companies sidestep the use of copyrighted information?

The A.I. models that generate synthetic data were themselves trained on human-created data, much of which was copyrighted. So copyright holders can still argue that companies like OpenAI and Anthropic used copyrighted text, images and video without permission.

Jeff Clune, a computer science professor at the University of British Columbia who previously worked as a researcher at OpenAI, said A.I. models could ultimately become more powerful than the human brain in some ways. But they will do so because they learned from the human brain.

“To borrow from Newton: A.I. sees further by standing on the shoulders of giant human data sets,” he said.

Artificial intelligence is peering into restaurant garbage pails  and crunching grocery-store data to try to figure out how to send less uneaten food into dumpsters.

David Autor, an M.I.T. economist and tech skeptic, argues that A.I. is fundamentally different  from past waves of computerization.

Economists doubt that artificial intelligence is already visible in productivity data . Big companies, however, talk often about adopting it to improve efficiency.

OpenAI unveiled Voice Engine , an A.I. technology that can recreate a person’s voice from a 15-second recording.

Amazon said it had added $2.75 billion to its investment in Anthropic , an A.I. start-up that competes with companies like OpenAI and Google.

Gov. Bill Lee of Tennessee signed a bill  to prevent the use of A.I. to copy a performer’s voice. It is the first such measure in the United States.

'Coordinated Lunar Time': NASA asked to give the moon its own time zone

own trip meaning

The White House wants the moon to have its own time zone.

On Tuesday, Arati Prabhakar, the head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), asked NASA to establish a unified standard time for the moon and other celestial bodies.

Prabhakar asked the space agency to coordinate with other government agencies to come up with a plan to create a Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC) by the end of 2026.

Time moves quicker on the moon

Time moves quicker (by 58.7 microseconds) every day on the moon relative to Earth because of the different gravitational field strength on the moon, the memo said.

"The same clock that we have on Earth would move at a different rate on the moon," Kevin Coggins, NASA's space communications and navigation chief, said in an interview with Reut ers .

The LTC would provide a time-keeping benchmark for lunar spacecraft and satellites that require extreme precision for their missions.

"Think of the atomic clocks at the U.S. Naval Observatory (in Washington). They're the heartbeat of the nation, synchronizing everything. You're going to want a heartbeat on the moon," Coggins said.

Artemis program: Here's why NASA's mission to put humans back on the moon likely won't happen on time

Synchronized time and lunar missions

In 2017, NASA formed the Artemis  program, to re-establish crewed lunar missions. The space agency aims to establish a scientific lunar base that could help set the stage for future missions to Mars. Dozens of companies, spacecraft and countries are involved in the effort.

An OSTP official told Reuters that without a unified lunar time standard it would be challenging to ensure that data transfers between spacecraft are secure and that communications between Earth, lunar satellites, bases and astronauts are synchronized.

Discrepancies in time also could lead to errors in mapping and locating positions on or orbiting the moon, the official said.

"Imagine if the world wasn't syncing their clocks to the same time - how disruptive that might be and how challenging everyday things become," the official said.

Yellen ends China trip with no breakthrough

Janet yellen wraps up trip to china with press conference in beijing.

Yellen’s trip to China is an attempt to fix economic problems of ‘our own making’: Mary Kissel

Mary Kissel, former senior adviser to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, joins ‘Mornings with Maria’ to Secretary Yellen’s highly anticipated trip to China.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen wrapped up four-day trip to Beijing without much to show for it, acknowledging an unsure future for relations between the U.S. and China.

After a series of economic meetings, it was at least agreed that more communication would take place.

"There is much more work to do," Ms. Yellen said at a Monday news conference. "And it remains unclear what this relationship will endure in the months and years ahead."

Yellen told reporters that the U.S. will not allow China to disrupt new industries with imports, citing the early 2000s when close to 2 million American jobs were lost, Reuters reported. At the same time, she did not issue any threats or warnings about possible tariffs as a response to China's push in the green energy sector.

YELLEN SAYS 'TOUGH CONVERSATIONS' NEEDED ON CHINA'S OVERPRODUCTION

"We've seen this story before," Yellen said, according to Reuters. "Over a decade ago, massive PRC government support led to below-cost Chinese steel that flooded the global market and decimated industries across the world and in the United States."

During her trip, Yellen met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, the number two official in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) behind General Secretary Xi Jinping, for 80 minutes on Sunday, and Li said the U.S. and China should be partners rather than adversaries and touted the "constructive progress" made during her trip. Yellen's trip to China is her second in the last nine months.

"While we have more to do, I believe that, over the past year, we have put our bilateral relationship on more stable footing," Yellen said. "This has not meant ignoring our differences or avoiding tough conversations. It has meant understanding that we can only make progress if we directly and openly communicate with one another."
