Vast, dry and desolate yet full of life, Namibia is one of the most fantastic and unusual countries in Africa. Namibia is home to the oldest desert in the world, the Namib. Its many sand dunes roll over the land stretching toward the sea and burying wrecked ships in their wake. Namibia has vast salt pans, jagged rock formations and arid plains dotted with mysterious fairy circles. Its vast open lands are home to healthy populations of endangered cheetah and black rhino, while desert-adapted elephants, lions and oryx make a living in seemingly inhospitable environments. In short, it is a lesser known but must-see destination in Africa.

The Caprivi Strip
The northeastern most area of Namibia is a small strip of land known as ‘The Caprivi Strip’ or ‘The Zambezi Region.’ Bordered by Angola, Botswana and Zambia, this area is Namibia’s most lush, hosts its largest population and is more like its neighbors than the rest of the country. There are excellent game viewing opportunities including the chance to see water-loving antelope species such as red lechwe and sitatunga, great numbers of both dry country and water birds, as well as large animals such as elephant and buffalo. The area is also easily accessed from Chobe in Botswana.
Game drives, water safaris (both motorized and non-), cultural visits, walks and fishing – including tiger fishing – are all options in this region.
This area in north central Namibia is ideal for seeking desert-adapted wildlife such as elephants, lions and endangered black rhino. It is also home to some of the country’s most dramatic and breathtaking landscapes, including Namibia’s highest mountain, the Brandberg. Crimson mountains, palm-fringed valleys, dramatic rock formations and some of the best rock art in Southern Africa can be explored at Twyfelfontein, a World Heritage Site in Damaraland.
Etosha National Park
Namibia’s best game viewing destination Etosha is a huge 7,800-square-mile park dominated by its massive, ancient namesake pan (dry/ephemeral lake). Prolific wildlife is found in the surrounding bush, especially during the dry season. Visitors might have the chance to see elephants, rhinos, zebras, lions, blue wildebeest and the rare black-faced impala at the park’s waterholes with the shimmering mirage of the pan as a stunning backdrop. Birders will be delighted with some 340 species to seek out. Nearby reserves offer access to the park, as well as activities not allowed in the park including walking, night drives and sleepouts.
Fish River Canyon National Park
Second in size only to the Grand Canyon, Fish River Canyon National Park boasts beautiful scenery, challenging hiking and few visitors. It’s possible to explore its fascinating geology by driving and stopping at myriad excellent viewpoints, on guided day hikes, as well as on an adventurous multi-day hike into the canyon (hiking is seasonal).
Abandoned in 1956, Kolmanskop is a ghost town that is succumbing to desert geology. It is best known from eerie and beautiful photographs immortalizing its desertion and slow reclamation by the desert. As you walk through houses knee-deep in sand taking in the Edwardian architecture, you can learn about its (literally) rich, diamond mining history and the speculators that once called this place home. It is a very special location for photography.
Kunene Region/Kaokoland
This wild sparsely inhabited (even by Namibian standards) region is best known for its true remoteness. Most travelers visit by air as getting to the few lodges scattered around this area require extremely experienced driver/guides to traverse challenging ‘roads,’ though for those with the time to go by road, it’s quite an adventure. This harsh land is home to the Himba, a semi-nomadic tribe living a traditional lifestyle in this desolate area. It has fascinating yet delicate landscapes that beg for a closer look. On the very rare occasion of rain, they burst into bloom.
The Kunene River is an oasis, marking the border between Namibia and Angola. Palm forests border its banks and host birdlife and small mammals, while hippo and crocodile can be seen in its waters. Sundowner cruises on the river are not to be missed.
ATV excursions among the dunes are and option at one camp, while boat trips, fishing excursions and guided hikes to take in the area’s incomparable beauty can be done from all lodges.
Namib-Nakluft National Park
Covering more than 19,000 sq miles, the Namib-Nakluft National Park is one of the largest in Africa. The park encompasses desert and semi-desert terrain and some of the most impressive sand dunes in the world, forming a crimson-hued ‘sand sea.’ Its incredible, ever-changing desert scenery and unique wildlife are fascinating, while its vastness and deep quiet are soul-restoring.
Sossusvlei translates to “dead-end marsh” and is an extremely photogenic and popular pan. Nearby are Namibia’s most impressive dunes, including famous Big Daddy. Climbing the dunes in the area isn’t for the faint of heart but rewards the hearty with stunning views and a fun run down the soft sands. Early morning is best for beautiful color and photography, and a hot air balloon ride is one of the most memorable ways to experience this beautiful slice of desert.
To the south, the NamibRand Nature Reserve borders the Namib-Nakluft National Park and offers unique accommodation, incredible walks (including multi-day treks) and beautiful drives. Additional activities include horseback riding and ebiking.
Skeleton Coast
While the Skeleton Coast’s environment may seem inhospitable, desert-adapted wildlife survives and thrives here. Very lucky travelers might spot oryx or springbok on the beaches, and every visitor will enjoy the incredibly gorgeous scenery. When ships ran aground on Namibia’s coast, survival for the marooned sailors was out of the question, though these days, travelers can stop for a picnic at one of the remaining picturesque wrecks. The Cape Cross Seal Reserve is worthy of a stop to see the huge (100,000+) cape fur seal population.
Those with more time to explore can spend a few days based at a private camp on the coast enjoying the beauty and solitude of the landscape. These trips let you explore the little things – watching crabs scuttling on the beach, learning about some of the oldest plants on earth, exploring ancient rock circles or visiting the Himba, a semi-nomadic tribe still living a traditional lifestyle. Ask your Journey Specialist about visiting the roaring dunes – one of the more amazing natural experiences on the coast!
This quaint coastal town feels as though it has been displaced from Germany and is an overnight stop for many travelers visiting places like the Skeleton Coast, Damaraland or the Namib-Nakluft National Park. There are very good restaurants in town serving incredible seafood (don’t miss the oysters!) and plenty of activities including sandboarding and dune bike riding. Nearby Walvis Bay also offers excellent birdwatching, kayaking and boat trips to observe marine life.
When to Visit
Namibia’s desert climate sees temperatures ranging from very hot to very cold depending on the time of year. Late April to September marks the country’s dry season and has the most pleasant weather, though nights and early mornings can be quite cold, and travelers may encounter frost. These months are among the very best for wildlife viewing. Things warm up from October through December before Namibia’s wet season from January to April. The rain is regional, and there are areas with little to no rainfall year-round. Those that do receive rain can reveal a surprising lushness in the desert landscape, making for sometimes rare and unforgettable scenery. Temperatures this time of year can be very hot.
Namibia’s coast typically sees a cooler climate year-round.

Namibia safari guides – where & when to go, and what to see & do
Wedged between the Atlantic coast and the Kalahari Desert, Namibia is one of Africa’s hidden gems that is slowly emerging as a popular tourist destination, with safaris in Namibia high on the to-do list. A sense of freedom is generated by an epic, empty landscape with wide horizons, unpolluted skies and one of the world’s lowest population densities. These facts, combined with a plethora of large game animals and a frontier feel make Namibia the ultimate photography or self-drive safari destination , and not too bad either if you’re looking for an indulgent luxury safari experience.
The Namib Desert is the oldest and one of the largest deserts in the world , and a predominant feature of the country, extending all the way up the Atlantic coast on the western side of the country. The desert is scored by a number of rivers coming down from the Central Plateau – most of which are now permanently dry, or only flow during the rainy summer months.
The north of Namibia is dominated by the huge, permanently flowing rivers of the Kuene, Kavango and Zambezi, which make up the borders with Angola, Botswana and Zambia respectively. This part of the country is lush and green with dense woodlands most of the year, and home to several small national parks that teem with wildlife and birdlife. The rest of the country is made up of scrubby bushland of the higher Central Plateau, trailing off into the Kalahari desert in the east.
Wildlife in Namibia is varied, and taking a safari in Namibia will allow you the opportunity to see all of Southern Africa’s mammals. As well as the big five , the Namib Desert is home to the exceptional and endemic desert-adapted elephant and rhino. In the Namib Desert and elsewhere in Namibia a truly extraordinary fact is that the country has one of the densest congregations of animals in the world, combined with one of the sparsest human populations, making for fantastic wildlife viewing.
Unlike much of the rest of Africa, habitat destruction is not generally an issue in Namibia, and you can expect to see large mammals roaming the wilderness as you drive between Namibian national parks or towns. This means you need to be ready for a safari experience in Namibia at any time you’re not in a well populated area!

Namibia safari highlights
Sossusvlei’s stunning dunes.
Discover the sand dunes of Sossusvlei with a dawn game drive and hike to top of a dune to watch the sun rise over the Namib desert. The dunes and surrounding area are truly specatular, reaching almost 400 metres high and providing inspiration to any budding photographer.
Self-drive safari in Etosha
Take a self-drive safari tour around accessible but wild Etosha National Park – one of the world’s premier national parks. 763 km of open roads around the park make for the ultimate self-drive safari. The park is based around a huge salt pan, and seems inhospitable to life, but a string of watering holes brings herds of antelope species and their prey from the surrounding scrub.
Fish River Canyon views
Visit the jaw-dropping 100km long, 26km wide Fish River Canyon in the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park . It world’s second largest canyon after the Grand Canyon in the US, though with far less tourists visiting, as with all destinations in Namibia it’s both beautiful and serene.
The Walvis Bay ‘marine big five’
The cold waters off the Namibian coast harbor a wealth of marine life, no location more so than Walvis Bay. Styled as the ‘marine big five,, it’s possible to see whales, dolphn, sunfish, turtles and seals on a boat – or even canoe – safari .
Best time to go on safari in Namibia
As with the rest of Southern Africa, Namibia experiences summer between November and March and winter from May to August. From August temperatures keep rising until October when the first rains start to arrive in the northern areas, followed by large amounts of rain and occasional flash-flooding.
The best time to go on safari in Namibia depends on where you’re going, and what you’d like to see. October to March is the best time to visit Namibia’s coast around Walvis Bay and Sossusvlei as the climate provides a pleasant respite from the heated interior. If you’re travelling through the Skeleton Coast region the climate is similar year-round, with regular mist and winds.
For the inland areas of Namibia – including the Namib desert, Etosha and Kavango regions, the cooler months from April September provide temperatures far more bearable than summer months. Between May and September, thirsty animals gather at diminishing waterholes, making it the best time to go to Etosha for game viewing.

National parks in Namibia
All national parks in Namibia are administered by the extremely efficient Namibia Wildlife Resorts.
Namibia is an enormous country, and one with large tracts given over to national parks. This gives Namibia the impressive status of being the country with the highest ratio of animals to humans in the world: In short, Namibia’s national parks are fantastic places to visit for safaris and wildlife watching.
A word of warning – the distances between national parks can be huge, and very few roads are tarmacked. A 2WD will serve most of the year in most parts of the country, but rainy season will see even 4WDs struggling in some areas on a driving safari in Namibia.
Top Namibia national park picks
Etosha national park.
A classic African national park – with excellent visitor facilities – housing the ‘big five’ and much more in plains surrounding a huge central salt pan. Herds of elephants, black-maned lions and the world’s largest population of rare black rhinos gather at the 86 waterholes, springs and fountains found around the edges of the pan.
Skeleton Coast National Park
With a reputation as one of the most desolate places on earth, the 20,000 km sq park is one of the most inhospitable and least visited places on earth. Shimmering white dunes, martian rock, beautiful sand beaches and treacherous, rough seas dotted with hulks of shipwrecks make up the park scenery.
Namib Naukluft National Park
The oldest desert on earth, and quite possibly the most beautiful. Namib Naukluft National Park is easily accessible from Sossusvlei, where giant dunes tower 400m into the air, and pockets of long ago dried-out lakes serve as sporadic homes to forests of thousand year old dead trees. In a word, epic!

Mamili National Park: Little visited .national park in Namibia’s northern Caprivi Strip, offering plenty of classic African wildlife a true wilderness experience.
Mudumu National Park: A riverine national park with undisturbed mopane forest, flood plains and swamps. Unsurprisingly, water-living creatures feature large – crocodiles, hippos, elephants, otters, turtles.

Skeleton Coast National Park: Take a drive through one of the world’s most inhospitable spots, with alien landscapes and ancient shipwrecks adding atmosphere.

Namibia Safari Tours & Holidays
A safari in Namibia is as much about the wildlife as the country’s scenic beauty. In Etosha National Park it has one of the most storied wildlife reserves on the continent, but there’s so much more to experience here. The national parks of the Zambezi Region (formerly Caprivi Strip) are only now getting the attention they deserve, while the dune-scapes of the Skeleton Coast and its hinterland are simply extraordinary. And these are just starting points for exploring a country rich in experiences and safari possibilities.

8 Questions About Namibia Safaris
Answered by
Anthony ham.
When is the best time to visit Namibia?
“If I had to choose one month for a Namibia tour, it would be June (followed by May). Although June temperatures can plummet overnight, you get the best of both worlds: high-season prices have yet to kick in, but the weather is ideal for outdoor exploration. As long as you don’t mind high-season prices and higher numbers of visitors with whom to share the wilderness, July through to October is also excellent with generally dry, clear weather and good visibility. By October, temperatures are starting to rise towards uncomfortable levels. The rains are less of an issue in Namibia than they are elsewhere in southern Africa, but rain does occur, especially from December through to March or April. At this time, birdlife is abundant. However, some off-road trails may become difficult to navigate and wildlife tends to disperse and be harder to find (because of the additional water sources scattered around).”
What are the major attractions in Namibia?
“Wildlife is a major draw for visitors on Namibia safaris. Etosha National Park , in particular, is one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations – and rightly so. Its combination of hallucinatory salt pans and large wildlife populations (including lions, elephants and plains animals in abundance) give it a distinction found in few other parks. Less commonly visited, but for many travelers equally rewarding, are Damaraland and the reserves of the Zambezi Region, such as Bwabwata and Nkasa Rupara (Mamili) National Parks. Landscapes are another highlight. From the Waterberg Plateau and Namib-Naukluft National Park to Kaokoland and Fish River Canyon (Africa’s answer to the Grand Canyon), stark beauty takes on many forms here. Namibia has long been a popular destination for self-drive safaris, but a Namibia safari is now just as likely to be characterized by luxury lodges, both exclusive and remote, that bring class and comfort to the whole experience.”
How much does a Namibia safari cost?
“It is possible to do a Namibia safari on the cheap, by renting a 4WD and heading out into the wild. While vehicle rental costs are generally high, and fuel is never cheap, your vehicle will also be your home, and camping and national park fees are not as expensive as in some other countries. As a minimum, expect to pay US$175 per person per day. If you’re looking for higher comfort levels and for someone else to take care of the arrangements, Namibia safari prices also reach for the high end rather well. Although there are degrees of comfort and cost, the price of a Namibia safari package can go as high as US$1,075 per person per day.”
What is the wildlife viewing like in Namibia?
“The best places to see wildlife on a Namibia safari are in the country’s north. Etosha National Park is especially good for lions and elephants, but you’ll also see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and all manner of antelope species. After dark, black rhinos gather at waterholes, including those alongside some of the main camping areas, and it was here that the BBC first filmed this unusual behavior. African wild dogs are a possibility in the northeast, while sable, sitatunga and red lechwe antelope are highlights in Bwabwata National Park. In the northwest, Damaraland and Kaokoland are famed for desert-adapted lions and elephants, and brown hyenas can be seen scavenging around seal colonies on the coast. Farther south, wildlife is scarcer and the main reason to visit is the scenery.”
How safe is Namibia for tourists?
“Namibia is generally safe and politically stable. You’re unlikely to experience any problems in safari areas, such as parks, reserves and wilderness areas. Although most Namibian cities are considered safe and very few travelers run into trouble, you should be careful in larger cities, especially Windhoek, where petty crime is a growing problem. Road conditions are generally excellent along the main road network, although off-road conditions can prove difficult, from the deep sands of Namib-Naukluft and Khaudum National Parks to the axle-breaking rocks of Damaraland and Kaokoland. If self-driving in these areas, make sure you are prepared. The only risk of malaria is in the extreme north, along the border with Angola and in the Zambezi Region.”
How do I select a reliable Namibian tour operator?
“Your first stop when planning a Namibia holiday should be SafariBookings.com, where you can see the widest range of safari options in one place. The insights that you’ll get from expert reviews of the parks and from travelers’ experiences with operators offering Namibia tours could prove invaluable. Beyond that, talk at length to any company you are considering for your travel plans. No question should go unanswered. A visit to Namibia can be expensive and you want to be well informed about what you’re paying for. Safaris are a dream trip for so many, and avoiding a nasty surprise or preventable disappointment while on the adventure of a lifetime should be more than enough motivation to ask questions of the company you book with. Make sure that you spell out your expectations of your Namibia safari. Is it wildlife or the landscapes that you most want to see? What wildlife is on your bucket list? What’s your daily itinerary? How many hours can you expect to spend in the car each day? If a company is unwilling or reluctant to answer these questions, you should look elsewhere.”
What type of accommodation can I expect?
“If you’re self-driving, as so many visitors to Namibia do, you’ll likely sleep in a tent: either on the ground or on the roof of the vehicle. Camping areas in Namibia are often crowded, especially in popular wildlife areas such as Etosha National Park, but they’re also fenced, unlike in neighboring Botswana. Most have facilities that include showers, toilets and sometimes even restaurants, kiosks and swimming pools. Elsewhere, Namibia has a full complement of lodges and hotels, usually on the fringes of wilderness areas. These span the complete range of costs and comfort levels. Inside the parks, reserves and remote areas, luxury lodges and tented camps, usually designed to blend into their surroundings, dominate. They often have just 8 to 10 tents, ensuring an exclusive experience at all times. Tents are large, with comfortable beds, writing desks, private bathrooms and private decks or terraces. The night noises of Africa and cooling evening breezes make the safari tent one of my favorite places to sleep anywhere on earth.”
What can I expect from a safari in Namibia?
“If your Namibia tour is all about wildlife, expect a similar experience in Namibia as you would elsewhere in Africa. This means a pre-dawn wake-up call, safari drives in the very early morning and again in the late afternoon, and perhaps even a night drive. On these drives, you’ll be accompanied by a guide, a driver and sometimes a local tracker perched on a seat on the hood of the vehicle looking for animal spoor (marks or substances left behind as animals move through their environment). You can also expect a full breakfast after you return from the morning’s drive, plus lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, with plenty of relaxation time in between. If your visit is more about exploring wild landscapes, your focus may be different, but the daily rhythms (formed in part to avoid being out during the hottest times of the day) are likely to be similar.”

An Endless Landscape of Discovery
Namibia is characterized by a sparse population scattered across vast open spaces, incredible scenery and surprising contrasts. Oceans, dunes, mountains and desert all roll together into an awe-inspiring mix of natural beauty.
Highlights of this indescribably beautiful country include:
Africa’s largest conservation area, the Namib-Naukluft Park , with Sossusvlei’s magnificent sea of rolling red dunes. Travel further to Dead Vlei and the Sesriem Canyon for an immersive desert experience .
Etosha National Park is a renowned conservation area, acclaimed for its size and diversity of wildlife. The Etosha Pan lies at the centre of it all.
Travel west for the German town of Swakopmund, nestled between a warm desert and a cold ocean close to the Skeleton Coast with its rich history of shipwrecks and storms. Large seal colonies offer the perfect prey for desert hyaenas, jackals and lions.
Another unmissable region is the mountainous Damaraland, home to an assortment of desert-adapted wildlife, such as elephant, giraffe, black rhino, zebra and lion, which eke out an existence in the near-barren landscape.
Visit the picturesque Brandberg , Namibia’s highest mountain, home to thousands of ancient rock paintings (most notably the White Lady). Travel to the nearby outcrops of Twyfelfontein for exceptional San Bushmen engravings, considered to be some of the best-preserved etchings on the continent.
The Kunene River , in Namibia’s far western corner, is a lifeline for the Himba, a nomadic tribe that survives in this sparsely vegetated region.
A Year-Round Safari Destination
With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Namibia is a scenic, year-round safari destination.
For wildlife, the best time to visit all parks, particularly Etosha National Park , is in the dry season from May to October.
The rainy season (green season) transforms the landscape, but the months of October to February can be unpleasantly hot and uncomfortable. The climate differs between the regions, and the west coast can become foggy and cold.
The country receives most of its rainfall from December to March, delivered via short, sharp storms that are over quickly and will not keep you from your game viewing for long. Birdwatching in the Caprivi is fantastic, and in Kaokoland, the Kunene River floods make for great game viewing by boat. In Sossusvlei and the NamibRand, the desert plains are transformed into green, grassy blankets, attracting herbivores from near and far.
The high temperatures at this time send locals flocking to the coast, particularly to Swakopmund , which means it might not be the best time to visit Namibia’s quaint coastal town if you are looking for peace and quiet. The colonies of flamingo and the dreamy temperatures, however, might just make up for it. It is also one of the best times to take a Skeleton Coast flying safari. Surprisingly, the mornings are not as foggy as in the winter months, the evenings are warmer and the rain clears the air.
April and May are the ‘shoulder season’ months, when it’s not too hot or too cold, and you can experience the best of the dry and the green seasons. Etosha is glossy green and grassy and, depending on the rains, the desert dunes may still have a sprinkling of foliage and wildflowers. The air is fresh and the sky is blue and many say that Namibia is most beautiful at this time of year.
The winter months of June to October are the best time to visit Namibia’s animal hotspot, Etosha National Park. The bush is drying out after the wetter months and animals begin to congregate around the waterholes in their hundreds.
This is also a good time to experience most of Namibia’s bucket-list marvels. The skyscraper dunes of Sossusvlei are violently red when contrasted with winter’s crisp, cobalt-blue skies. Desert star-gazing is unrivalled and up in Damaraland , the desert-adapted elephants can be seen picking their way across the riverbeds to the last remnants of water.
Temperature-wise, the coldest months are June and July and while it remains wonderfully warm during the day, mornings and evenings can be icy.
Overall, September is one of the best times to visit all parts of Namibia. The temperatures are perfect, game viewing is excellent and the local children are back at school.
Temperatures (and humidity) begin to rise steadily over November and December and the first rains of the season are expected with unforgettable electric storms crackling across the desert.
Remember that desert temperatures can be variable, so whatever time of year you travel be prepared; pack layers, remember a hat and sunglasses and a warm jacket.

Understand the Local Culture
Time moves slowly in Namibia. Even the old German colonial towns run on a languid timetable. To fully appreciate the beauty of this country people need to slip into its relaxed rhythm. Places like Sossusvlei or Etosha can’t be rushed – particularly given that the desert isn’t the easiest place to reach in the first place.
Namibians are friendly, but don’t expect to meet too many of them. They are proud of how undeveloped their country is and rarely get offended. Taking the time to ask “how are you?” will always be rewarded; after all, when there are so few people around it would be bizarre to skip a greeting.
The Namibian diet is heavily weighted towards meat and beer. Enthusiastic carnivores are in for a treat with zebra, beef, ostrich and massive pork knuckles on the menu. Vegetarians are catered for, but it’s advisable to give prior notice of dietary requirements.

About Namibia
Namibia boast some of the most spectacular desert landscapes in the world. Overcoming these expansive arid areas, the country contains many “desert-adapted” wildlife, including elephants, lion, black rhino, oryx, springbok and giraffe.
The Namib-Naukluft and Skeleton Coast National Parks act as protectors of the country’s unique desert ecosystems. The former contains the world’s oldest desert, as well as colossal sand dunes like “Big Daddy” and the eerie Dead Vlei. The San call Skeleton Coast “the land God made in anger,” appropriate for a park characterized by wind-sculpted dunes, rugged canyons and jagged peaks. Condensation coming off the Atlantic Ocean allows a myriad of smaller lifeforms, as well as low concentrations of desert-adapted big game, to survive in both parks.
Heading inland, the quantity of wildlife increases – but the scenery is no less stunning. Due to a successful joint venture conservancy model, Damaraland’s wildlife has thrived. This region’s seemingly barren gravel plains and rock-strewn mountains actually support a wealth of wildlife that migrate along the ephemeral river systems. Further east is Etosha National Park , Namibia’s premier game viewing destination. It’s not uncommon to see eight or more different animal species around one of the park’s many waterholes!
Activities in Namibia include day and night game drives in open vehicles, hot-air balloon rides, guided walks (including rhino tracking in Damaraland), boating, viewing rock paintings (most notably Twywelfontein), visiting the Himba tribe and local communities, and star-gazing (part of the Namib Desert is a Dark Sky Reserve).

Namibia Safari Tours and Holidays
Set on the southeast African coast, Namibia is a country that enthralls visitors with its astounding natural landscapes. Sparsely populated, it's characterised by the sandy expanses of the Namib Desert, as well as the great Fish River Canyon and the crashing waves off the Atlantic Coast.
However, Namibian holidays hold more in store than the untamed beauty of its natural landscapes - with the Etosha Pan creating a striking sea of white in the midst of the surrounding wildlife sanctuary.

At Bench Africa, we love bringing our Australian customers closer to their dream African holiday by introducing them to some of the continent's most intriguing destinations. Here's a taste of what to expect on one of our Namibia tours.
About Namibia
While modern-day Namibia is seen to be a relatively stable country, it owes its colourful past to its time as the German colony of South-West Africa, as well as South African occupation during the First World War. After much effort, The Republic of Namibia finally gained independence in 1990, with the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) playing a defining role in the event.
Today, Namibia's population numbers just over 2.3 million, despite having a total area of 825,000 sq km (just smaller than the state of New South Wales). The capital of Windhoek is the largest city with a buzzing cosmopolitan atmosphere, shaped over time by a blend of African and European influences.
While the country has a small population, it is home to a wide variety of languages. English was adopted as the sole official language, but there are 11 or more indigenous languages, as well as those introduced by colonising forces (Afrikaans and German) spoken throughout. While the country has a small population, it is home to a wide variety of languages. English was adopted as the sole official language, but there are 11 or more indigenous languages, as well as those introduced by colonising forces (Afrikaans and German) spoken throughout. Just under half of the population speaks Oshiwambo, with Nama/Damara, Otjiherero and Kavango forming the other main dialects. The country's currency is the Namibian Dollar, but you can also use South African Rand as legal tender, with the former being fixed to the Rand's value.
Namibia tourism
Namibia holidays offer you a land of contrasts. In Windhoek, you'll find a laidback, well established city, with an enticing shopping and culinary scene. Much of the German influence is still apparent in the local architecture, as well as in its lively Oktoberfest celebrations.
The world's oldest desert, the Namib, is thought to have existed for some 55 million years, covering an expanse of over 80,000 square kilometres. In the southern part of the desert you can find one of the country's most unique locations, Sossusvlei. Nestled in heart of the Namib, the clay and salt landscape create a striking scene around the pan, surrounded by red star dunes swept in all directions by the desert's shifting winds.
Travellers on a Namibia safari are blessed with yet another natural wonder in the Fish River Canyon further south. Africa's second largest natural gorge, the canyon is 27 kilometres wide, giving you a sense of its awe-inspiring scale.
For those in search of wildlife, the Etosha National Park offers a blend of arid salt pan, lush grasslands and plentiful watering holes, making it a great place to do some game viewing. Consider planning your Namibia safari around the months of May through to October for prime wildlife experiences.
Bench Africa's Namibia safari tours are well thought out and organised with every detail well thought out, ensuring you can see the best of this beautifully diverse country.

View the Story of Explore Namibia
Explore Namibia is a dynamic and professional travel company in Namibia, founded in 2006 by the Dutch couple, Marco and Elise Both have travelled through Africa extensively and they simply love it. When the opportunity occurred to go on an adventure to Africa, they did not hesitate, quit their jobs in Europe and moved 10.000 km South. And still today, after all these years they still love what they do – Explore Namibia and help others do the same!
Over the past years Explore Namibia has grown and built a strong team in Windhoek, Namibia with a vast amount of local ‘know-how’ and up-to-date information. Here you will also find nearby support while travelling. In the Netherlands, Spain and Namibia, we have offices where our experienced Tour Consultants can assist you even better during the preparations and planning of your next African adventure.
In 2018, Julia joined Marco and Elise on this adventure. Julia was born and raised on a guest-farm in Namibia, was always closely involved with visitors from all over the world and fascinated by their passion for these southern African countries. After spending some years in Europe, Julia is happy to be ‘back home’ and share these unique experiences, the southern African countries have to offer, with others. Recently the activities were merged with My Namibia Safaris, and Mirela and Rainer were welcomed as partners, and so was Johannes, the better half of Julia.
Explore Namibia offers organised self-drive safaris and private guided tours. You can go on an adventure in a fully equipped vehicle of your own choice. We will arrange your accommodations in advance, whether you wish to stay in lodges and guesthouses, on campsites or both.

Only remembering a tiny detail about my childhood and travels, I know I loved nature, as I still do today. Sunrises and sunsets in our country are by far the most spectacular views I have ever seen.
I started working closely with the Tourism Industry in 2017 and in 2020 I started working directly with Tourists. It has been one amazing Industry to work in, as you get to hear everyone’s “Story” on where they come from. Working at Explore Namibia has now given me the platform to share “My story” about our beautiful country.
Only having recently started working at Explore, I am thrilled to be part of such energized and fun-loving team. I am looking forward to be the best I can, to our clients and to my colleagues.
Growing up in Windhoek and spending each holiday at the village was fun and seldom monotonous. I was curious to discover the reason why people kept saying: “Namibia is a top tourism destination.” I wanted to see it for myself and see something different from the everyday goats and cows. My curiosity led me into perusing studies in travel and tourism and now I passionately organize tours and love to interact with people from different walks of life.
Travelling to Namibia is more than just ‘safari’. It’s about the people, the culture, the environment and the history of the country. Explore Namibia gives the entire African Experience.
Hello, my name is Pierre, and I have had the privilege of experiencing diverse cultures throughout my life. Born in South Africa, I have lived in England, the United States, and now call Spain my home. My love for traveling has taken me on numerous self-drive holidays across Europe and the US, allowing me to explore new destinations and create unforgettable memories. Alongside my passion for travel, design, and photography. I also find solace in camping, spending quality time with my family, and indulging in the joy of the favorite South African pastime, barbecuing. In terms of languages, I am fluent in Afrikaans, English, and Spanish. I am excited to be a part of this company, where I can combine my enthusiasm for travel to craft tailor-made travel itineraries for clients, enabling them to embark on unforgettable journeys and explore the best Southern Africa has to offer.
For me personally, doing a road trip is undoubtedly the best way to discover a country!
The freedom of traveling over endless roads with a fully equipped 4WD is incredible. Going for an adventure in the most beautiful wildlife parks and remote areas. Ending the day together around a cozy campfire. Sleeping in a roof tent while hearing the sounds of wild animals in the distance.
For me, this makes Namibia and Botswana the ultimate destination for an adventurous road trip. And a proper dose of good on-the-road music should certainly not be missed.
After having lived and worked for two years at the local Explore Namibia office in Windhoek and organizing trips from the Netherlands after that, I am now back in the old nest again.
I am happy to assist you to organize your personal road trip adventure.
As long as I can remember my parents took me on self-drive safari trips through Africa. Sometimes we slept in lodges, but we also often slept outside, on campsites in roof tents on top of our old Toyota 4×4 Landcruiser. Although it was considered a “normal” holiday, it always felt as a great adventure to me. The sounds of wild animals during the night and sleeping under the millions of stars – that feeling is simply indescribable.
I am still passionate about adventurous camping trips, nature photography and teaching my little daughters the beauty of nature. I speak English, German & Afrikaans and can understand quite a bit of Dutch.
I'm just a guy from a small town in southern Italy, driven by an unyielding wanderlust. Since I was a kid, I've been fortunate to embark on countless adventures, exploring the world and immersing myself in diverse experiences.Through my travels, I discovered the incredible impact of tourism in revitalizing communities. This realization sparked a deep passion within me to share hidden gems and create meaningful connections with fellow travelers.I couldn't be more thrilled to be part of this amazing team! Together, we're dedicated to crafting unforgettable travel experiences that go beyond the ordinary. With fluency in Italian, English, Spanish, and conversational skills in Portuguese and French, I'm ready to connect with travelers from all walks of life.
I was born and raised in the land of the brave – Namibia.
For the first 3-4 years of my life, we lived on a farm. We moved to a little town known as Omaruru. My dad had a business where he drove out to farms and lodges to repair and erect Windmills (Wind Motoren) and drill boreholes.
During school holidays we joined him on his “business” trips enjoying the sights and being taught about the various wild animals, trees, shrubs and bushes and everything about the vast landscapes Namibia has. While camping out in the bush, the star constellations were amazing to see too. Having “farmers blood” running through my veins, travelling through Namibia always fascinates me and it gives a sense of freedom. From the North to the South, from the East to the West, it’s just remarkably amazing. A country where a lot of memories are made and adventures experienced, the knowledge gained that can be passed on to the little ones.
I am born and bred Namibian, I come from a big family that loves to travel. I grew up all around Namibia so I have seen quite a bit but there is yet so much more to be seen and experienced, so I can undoubtedly say that this is one of the most beautiful and unique country’s to explore, there is so much to see, too much for just one trip😉, if you prefer to drive yourself or allow us help you decide, both will be an amazing experience. From the beautiful African desert to the stunning Zambezi river with an bananadines of different wild life and even the African plains where the elephant, rhinos and predators walk together. You can even experience the native cuisine and all the different traditions of all the amazing cultures, as Africa in one of the country’s in the world with het most different cultures and languages.
So why not make us your next amazing adventure!
Well, childhood was lit, the only girl among boys best feeling ever, and jah I grew up in a small town which is called Ondangwa in the north, I’m not really a city kind of girl but I am grateful to be in the city, like the saying goes “there’s many opportunities in the city” and that was true, indeed there is, here I am, blessed with the best job I could ever imagine, great colleagues that turned into families.
Tourism industry has a lot of opportunities, but my most one is that I get to meet a lot of people from different countries and meeting them is always a great feeling to express, they get to show you their culture and I also have a good opportunity to show my culture too. And jah I am a travel buddy ,to check out new places and get to see different areas, the best thing FOOD, coming from a small town is a bit hectic, you don’t get to meet a lot of different food and people, but now I can loudly and proudly say YES, I can feel, see and taste new things.
At just 20 years old, I may seem young, but my passion for travel has been a driving force in my life. Having spent eight years living in Germany, I was fortunate enough to explore various European destinations and gain invaluable experience in the world of travel. Namibia, with its diverse landscapes, rich wildlife and vibrant cultures, offers an unparalleled holiday experience. As your personal holiday planner, I understand that each traveler is unique, with different preferences and interests, I am therefore committed to curating personalized itineraries tailored to your desires. Rest assured, I will provide you with genuine enthusiasm and a keen attention to detail! I will be able to help you in Spanish, German, English and if I try... Also in French 😉 I can't wait to be a part of your travel story and help you make lasting memories in this extraordinary country!
All in all, it took us about 20 years to finally make our dream trip to Namibia. For so long, my husband and I had been dreaming of this adventurous destination, after having previously doing a camping safari through Botswana. At that time, as I was pregnant of our son, we decided to postpone the trip. But eventually in 2022, after yet another couple of postponements due to COVID-19, the time had finally come. As previous clients, we had already attended Explore Namibia's information day for a couple of times and thus we became quite familiar with this beautiful organization. Until 2023, I worked as a management / executive assistant, but after more than 25 years in the business, I felt it was time to do something different. When, shortly before our departure to Namibia, I saw a vacancy at Explore Namibia, in which they were asking for a support worker for the Haarlem office with the opportunity to learn the trade as a tour consultant, I decided to respond. And to my great joy, I was hired and immediately after that, my husband and I made our trip to Namibia where I met my colleagues in Windhoek! That was a perfect combination of ``the useful with the pleasant``. I have now been employed since 1 December 2022 and am learning every day. I have always had an affinity for travelling and have had the opportunity to visit many destinations. That I have now been given the opportunity to make my hobby my job was a dream come true for me!
Back in high school I used to help my aunty at her guesthouse every holiday as a receptionist and a housekeeper and that’s where all started, I gained lots of passion in working with international and local clients and after high school I decided to study hospitality and tourism and I happened to find my way into Explore Africa Travel. To have been born here, to grow up so close to the Namibian veld, with easy access to this country’s great environmental wealth is a gift. This country presents thrilling destinations for all types of travelers ; to be immersed deeply in its cultural and social complexity; to witness the transition from oppressive external rule to freedom and blossoming of a new nation, experience the wonders of Namibia, Botswana, and the Victoria fall in comfort. It is always dangerous to build up a holiday in your mind as it is so rare that it lives up to all your hopes and expectations. Well, worry not. Explore Africa Travel is here to help plan your journey. And don’t forget: WHAT IS WORTH DOING IS WORTH DOING WELL.
After living in several countries, I have noticed how much I have learned and continue to learn from traveling, apart from the fact that I really enjoy it. I love acquiring new knowledge as well as new personal and professional skills and what better way than by exploring and being on new adventures.I think sharing this with more people is super fun and really fills my soul. I am delighted to help you with your next experience, and I hope all your memories are beautiful and fill your soul too 😉
I am passionate about assisting travelers from all over the world with planning their own journey and to provide them with all kinds of information about Namibia and Botswana which are both the most special and amazing countries.
I go with the quote that says, “Do not let others tell you how amazing the world is, see it for yourself”. It is better to see something for yourself than to hear about it a thousand times from others.
Tourism is in the heart of most Namibians and so central to what makes Namibia a unique destination. It plays a central role in the economy of Namibia, including the spin-off effects on other industries, so I am glad to have finally landed up at Explore Namibia. As a former scout and outdoor archery range owner, as well as camping enthusiast, I could not be happier.
When you pursue a career in the Travel Industry, you get to network with a lot of people with various cultures and personalities. I am a traveler myself and working in the travel industry made me a better one. There are challenges, like every type of work, but at the end of the day it’s providing the best experience we can to ensure our customers leave happy. I love learning about new places, meeting people from all walks of life and trying out local cuisine. I find that traveling helps broaden my perspective of life and gives me a greater appreciation for what I have at home.
Growing up in a Child Care Facility was an adventure on its own. We were given the opportunity to visit places around Namibia such as Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Etosha Game Resort, Tsumeb and the northern part of the country. Being outdoors can be scary yet very fun. The best part of it was setting up camp, camping under the open skies. It required extensive planning and preparation to be sure that you have everything in place to make your stay as comfortable as possible. In my current role as a Reservation agent, planning and organizing is part of my passion, this in a nutshell excites me to plan your adventurous trip @ Explore Namibia.
Live your life by compass, not a clock.
Millions of bright stars at night, a cozy BBQ campfire in the middle of nature, the sights of free-roaming wildlife and breathtaking landscapes with endless horizons. In a search for adventure and ultimate freedom, these elements made me fall in love with Africa.
And until today, I realize that Elise and I have been very fortunate being able to make our dreams come true, something that I will be grateful for the rest of my life.
Namibia is a land of contrast, full of natural wonders and cultural diversity: a perfect place for a multi-cultural soul to fit right in! I’m not an “original” Namibian, growing up in the country has left an unerasable Africa-shaped mark on my heart, and I’m hoping to help as many others as possible discover this wonderful country and continent for themselves.
There’s something awe-inspiring about the solitude of wide-open and untouched nature of Namibia which you can’t explain, it just has to be experienced!
As a child, a family safari was always a huge adventure – to discover new destinations, setting up camp, unearthing unknown plants and spotting animals. Still today, I enjoy a family holiday in our beautiful Namibia and learn new features of our country with every single trip or excursion.
I love to assist others with planning their own self-drive experience and consider it a real privilege to see that special twinkle and new knowledge in their eyes upon returning. There is simply no better escape from our busy life than spending time in nature.

Visited Namibia
We appreciated our Land Cruiser very much and were happy not to have to sit in an air-conditioned coach. In our car, we got a lot closer to nature and wildlife. Our request: don’t ever put air-conditioning in your vehicles – the Namibian air is so much better!!
I couldn’t have asked for a better guide than barbara. her love for and knowledge about the country, flora and fauna, the people and the (political) developments were unique, just as her calm personality and trust in us. she contributed a lot to the positive group dynamic., our namibia office.

Starting out as a gardener at a lodge in 2005, he knew he wanted to change career tracks and worked long and hard to accomplish his goal of becoming a certified tour guide. Simon grew up in Namibia’s remote north, close to the Angolan border, and went to school in the small town of Karasburg in the south. Today, he is one of the most passionate tour guides you can find, as he will share his love for his beautiful home country with you. Simon is an expert in Namibian history. Namibia Safari and Tours
Namibia, formerly known as South West Africa, is a true hidden gem.
An absolute must for the keen photographer, the country is a kaleidoscope of colours, shades and movement in serene landscapes that beg to just be quietly admired with a beverage in hand, and captured in the mind or camera. In Damaraland and north-western Namibia, echoes of its ancient geological history are in the mountains, dried up rivers and rock formations. For wildlife encounters, Namibia’s Etosha National Park is one of the premier parks in Africa with a number of species not encountered elsewhere, all meeting at the waterholes to drink. Sossusvlei, with its shifting sand dunes is a wonder to behold, and a hot-air balloon ride soaring above the Namib Desert is well worth doing.
Sossusvlei One if Namibia’s most well know attractions due to the enormous red sand dunes surrounding the arid desert. The dunes are some of the highest in the world reaching almost 400 meters and provide incredible photographic opportunities throughout the day.
Etosha Pan and National Park Located in northwestern Namibia Etosha is known for its salt pan, so large it can be seen from space. Home to an abundance of wildlife that congregates around the waterholes, giving you almost guaranteed game sightings.
Damaraland An area of spectacular scenery and ancient geological history in the mountains, dried up rivers and rock formations, it is one of the least populated and most geologically diverse areas in Africa.
Fish River Canyon The second largest canyon on earth, featuring a gigantic ravine that measures in total about 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 meters deep. Spectacular scenery!
Kolmanskop The once thriving diamond town is now abandoned and slowly being buried by the shifting sands of the Namib Desert. Built in the early 1900s by German settlers, complete with hospital, ballroom, school, theatre and bowling alley it now makes for fascinating photographs with the buildings taken over by sand.
Generally speaking, anytime May through December is most suitable for travel in most of the country. During the heat of the summer December through March, temperatures can reach above 40 degrees Celsius.
Winter days are warm, dry and most comfortable for travel whilst also being the best opportunity to see wildlife as the natural water supply is lower, bringing the animals to waterholes.
Staff experiences
Vast wide-open spaces, huge skies and that feeling of being in a very special place. These are the thoughts that spring to mind when I recall my trip to Namibia. I’d been to many other African countries before, but Namibia to me stands out as unique. Yes, you go for the wildlife safari experience, but there is so much more to it. I loved the ability to get out into the remote areas, and in fact my favourite place of all was Huab Under Canvas in the heart of Damaraland. The camp itself was amazing – tucked into a grove of trees on a dry river bed, everything was solar powered and although we slept ‘under canvas’ the comforts were all miraculously there! A hot bucket-shower every day, flush toilets, cold drinks and delicious meals – I don’t know how they do it, literally in the middle of nowhere! Tracking the rare and endangered desert-adapted rhino is an experience I will never forget – what a privilege. Staying at andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge was another ‘wow’ experience – the resident astronomer introduced us to the phenomenal starry skies; the first time I’ve seen the rings of Saturn! The dunes of Sossusvlei were just as impressive. We saved the best for last, ending a long day’s drive by arriving at Wolwedans Dune Camp in the NamibRand Nature Reserve. Entirely run by women, we had the menu read to us in the local ‘click’ language, and fell in love with the outlook which was layer upon layer of dry, sandy mountains fading into the horizon. Pure magic.

Useful information
Language English and Afrikaans are the official languages of Namibia.
Why we love it With 300+ days of sunshine each year, what’s not to like? Of course, weather is not everything. Namibia for the traveller is a slow-paced, relaxed and inspiring destination with the focus on stunning landscapes. You can experience some of the most remote and spiritual places on earth – Serra Cafema being a real highlight, where you can visit the nomadic Himba peoples. Sossusvlei is another magical place – where you can climb, slide down, balloon over and photograph the “sea of sand”. Etosha National Park, some 20,000 sq km and its salt pan attracts an incredible number and variety of wildlife. As travelling distances are lengthy in Namibia, we do recommend a flying safari to visit all the best destinations of the country if you have less than two weeks.
Weather Summer is from December to April and for some, the intense heat is too much to travel in as you are outdoors a lot. Winter is the best time to visit from May to October when you will have clear blue days and dry weather. Though the nights can be chilly, particularly in the desert areas so be prepared with extra clothing for the evenings. Makes it a great excuse to sit around the fire though!
Social customs & quirks With a population of only 2 million in a land size area of approx 825,000 sq km there is plenty of space to contemplate life! The people of Namibia include a melting pot of heritage from Afrikaans, Germans, Himba, Bushmen and other tribes from neighbouring countries such as Tswana (from Botswana) and Khoi (from South Africa. The different many tribes all have their own cultures and traditional customs such as the way they dress to this day. It is important to make sure if you are taking pictures of the locals that you have permission first in order to avoid offending anyone.
Festivals & events There are no major festivals or events held annually in Namibia, apart from the Independence Day from South Africa held on 21 March each year where there are a series of festivities and carnivals held throughout the country.
Health* A yellow fever certificate will be required for entry into Namibia if the traveller has been in a yellow fever infected country immediately prior. Malaria precautions are advised for certain areas of the country only, particularly if you are travelling between November to May.
Notes *Please be aware that Health information is subject to change at any time and you should always double check these requirements at the time of booking and before travel.

Safari intensiv.

On Namibia Safari: Mingling with the Wildlife of Southern Africa
After arriving in Namibia from South Africa, we stayed one night in the capital of Windhoek where we would start our two-week journey through the country and back again. Windhoek is the center of commerce for the country, but doesn’t offer a lot by way of tourism, so it’s more a stopping over point than anything before you embark upon your Namibia safari.
Note: We used Go2Africa to plan our entire Namibia trip. They were wonderful, and I can’t recommend them more highly—it took all the responsibility off of me, which was nice for a change! However, if you decide you’d rather plan your own trip, I’ve linked to booking sites where you can book the properties where we stayed. It’s important to note that a lot of the lodges in Namibia are small, so they book up far in advance—we planned our trip a whole year before our departure!
First stop in Namibia: Okonjima Nature Reserve
A driver picked us up at Hosea Kutako International Airport and took us to The Elegant Guesthouse where half of us immediately crashed while the other half found a lovely outdoor dinner at a local lodge before joining them in slumber. The next morning, he returned to take us to our real first stop of our Namibia vacation: The Plains Camp at Okonjima Nature Reserve . Once we arrived at Okonjima Nature Reserve, we wasted no time dropping our bags off and hopping on our first game drive of the trip.
Note: We’d had a few nights to catch up on the time-zone change via our visit to Cape Town , but if you’re arriving straight from overseas, the U.S. in particular, I recommend planning a good three or four nights at Okonjima for your first stop in order to get acclimated.
Most safari lodges include a set amount of drives in your stay. At Okonjima, our room rate included brunch, dinner, park and environmental education fees, tourism levy and an Endangered Species drive. One thing I’ve learned in the few safaris I’ve done is never miss a game drive no matter how tired you are. Each one is different, and you’ll always see new animals.
Okonjima Nature Reserve is family-owned and -operated and popular for its regular sightings of leopard, brown hyena and the rare pangolin; it’s also home to the AfriCat Foundation, whose goal is to ensure the survival of Namibia’s predators in their natural habitat through research and environmental projects. Not to mention, the lodge is just stunning.
On our first safari drive at Okonjima, we saw rhino, jackals, giraffes and numerous African birds, including the silly and slightly stupid guinea fowl who the Namibians call “murder chickens” because of their consistently frantic way of running in front of the vehicle as if on a suicide mission, and the dik dik, a favorite among our group for obvious reasons.
Our rooms were large and comfortable, and I wish we had had more time here but it was just a night stop before we were onto our next stay, which would prove to be the crown jewel of our vacation in Namibia.
Second stop in Namibia: Camp Kala
Our driver, Nico, who we would come to spend the following 10 days with, picked us up the following morning and drove us the four hours from Okonjima Nature Reserve to Onguma on the edge of Etosha National Park. They call Onguma Camp Kala “an ultra-exclusive lodge,” and that barely grazes the surface of this magnificent lodge. Located within Namibia’s Onguma Nature Reserve, Camp Kala is a four-suite property with standalone houses perched on a boardwalk overlooking a watering hole.
As I mentioned in my Namibia intro post , the wildlife here are mostly desert adapted species so watering holes like this are clutch in attracting animals by the dozens.
Our stay at Camp Kala included daily breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, four-course dinner, all beverages in bar and our in-room mini bar (beers, local spirits, soft drinks, water, house wines), two activities per night—a Sundowner Drive on Onguma Reserve and Etosha morning game drive—plus all tax and tourism levy.
Not only is Camp Kala full of animals, but our lodges were the nicest we stayed in anywhere. We even had our own plunge pools that overlook the watering hole so we could hang out there while zebra and giraffe mosey past in search of a drink of water.
The staff at Camp Kala is what put the experience over the top for all of us. Since we were the only guests of the lodge being that we were a group of seven and they are only four individual houses, we had the run of show. Each meal they prepared was a five star experience with multiple courses, and the staff could not have been more hospitable and better trained for their roles.
My only regret about staying at Camp Kala is we didn’t have more nights. Go2Africa planned us an excellent itinerary, but we were covering a lot of ground in 12 days, so we had just two nights at Camp Kala before moving onto our next stop in the desert. If I were to go back again, I would want to spend at least four nights at this luxury property.
The game drives topped off an incredible experience. Our guide Johan was a native Namibian who is also a photographer so we had a lot in common, and he made sure to stop when there was a great photo op for our long lenses . We did four drives with Johan over a two-day period, and every one of them was to a different spot on the reserve, each one a different kind of magic.
Inquire here about visiting Onguma Camp Kala in Namibia for yourself.
Sundowners in Namibia
If you have not been to Africa, you might not know their tradition of the Sundowner, but it’s one our group of thirsty travelers drank up very quickly. In Namibian safari culture, every afternoon ends somewhere in the bush, usually on a ridge with a view, with a full bar set out for your consumption. Johan even brought Moët the final day of our visit that made our over-the-top experience even more unbeatable.
We loved the Sundowner concept so much that we’ve had a couple such group happy hours back in the US since that trip. Sundowners are typically gin and tonics, but Johan always made sure to pack a full bar including wine for my mom, with plenty of snacks like biltong, African beef jerky, wasabi peas and other local snacks. Of all the things I miss about Namibia, our daily Sundowner is right at the top of that list.
Camp Kala has many luxury offerings like a spa, and every one of us decided to forgo a post-lunch drive one day and take advantage of the massage offerings instead. That’s not to say we didn’t go on game drives—our Namibia safari experience included four drives at Onguma where we saw such a diversity of wildlife. For some, the big game were the highlights; for SVV, it was the bevy of African birds like the hornbill and the vulture.
For me, it was the cats. At the end of the first day, we tracked a leopard at sunset and we followed her lazy walk for a while. Namibia is home to free-roaming leopards, and the the reserve collars and tracks there whereabouts in an area where poaching is a big concern.
On the final afternoon, we drove around until well past dark, which was worth it when we came across a pride of lions, mostly females with a couple of cubs. It’s wild to think that you’re just feet away from LIONS with absolutely nothing separating you. Obviously the guides are trained for such experiences, but the danger aspect of being so close to these deadly predators definitely adds to the fun factor.
Our Namibia safari was definitely off to a racing start, and our next stop would prove to be something that very few people in the world get to do and see: trek the black rhino on foot and its native habitat. Coming soon on C&C…
