Greenwood District Greenwood District free

If you want to gain a better understanding of Tulsa's pivotal role in American Black history and culture, you'll want to pay a visit to the Greenwood District. Famously dubbed "Black Wall Street" in the early 20th century, this neighborhood in northern Tulsa was home to prosperous Black businesses, including grocery stores, hotels, doctor's offices and theaters, as well as approximately 10,000 residents. In June 1921, it was destroyed during the Tulsa Race Massacre. During the massacre, white mobs looted and burned businesses and homes throughout Greenwood in retaliation of an alleged incident between a Black teenager and a white woman in downtown Tulsa.

Today, the neighborhood is home to several historic sites dedicated to telling the story of "Black Wall Street," as well as a collection of Black-owned businesses, such as Wanda J's Next Generation Restaurant and Silhouette Sneakers & Art. Among the historic sites located here is the Greenwood Cultural Center, which displays exhibits featuring photos from the massacre, as well as survivor accounts. Other points of interest include the John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park, which features bronze sculptures memorializing the victims, and the Mount Zion Baptist Church, which was destroyed during the massacre, but rebuilt in 1952. For a more immersive history lesson, visitors will want to stop by Greenwood Rising. This free museum opened in 2021 and features a variety of interactive, tech-savvy exhibits to help tell the story of the neighborhood before, during and after the massacre.

Consider yourself informed and – hopefully – enticed to swing by, particularly on a Wednesday morning. In spring, summer and fall that's when and where you'll find the Brookside Market , from mid-April to mid-October from 7:30 to 11 a.m. In the winter, the market is held every other Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m. Visit this Arkansas riverfront district's website for more information on shopping, nightlife and sightseeing.

The Best of Tulsa Travel Guide – 9 Things You Must Do!

' src=

Planning a trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma? Here are the best Tulsa, Oklahoma tourist attractions and things to do!

One of my 2021 travel goals was to visit Tulsa, Oklahoma (don’t believe me? Check this blog post out .) Travel restrictions are loosening in the USA, and I’m so glad I finally got to travel to Tulsa! Tulsa is a diverse city with so much to experience. It was a trip I’ll never forget. From Greenwood Ave and the historical significance of the Tulsa Race Massacre, to the many parks and gardens, it was amazing. Here are 9 things to do that you can add to your itinerary when you visit Tulsa !

Stay at the Tulsa Club Hotel

The Tulsa Club Hotel is ideally situated in historic downtown Tulsa. It’s housed in a 1927 building that features Art Deco design by world-renowned architect Bruce Goff. Book a suite for the best experience – they’re spacious, modern and each with its own unique design! Guest perks include a free local shuttle, a trendy lobby bar and a rooftop terrace. Rooms start at $125, making it a great option on any budget!

Enjoying some local chocolates from Glacier at the Tulsa Club Hotel

Explore The Historic Greenwood District

The Greenwood District in Tulsa was once one of the most prosperous Black communities in the United States. During the early 1900s, it was even dubbed the “Negro Wall Street” by Booker T. Washington. It’s now been a century since the 1921 Race Massacre, where a white mob attempted to destroy Tulsa’s Greenwood neighborhood in one of the worst domestic attacks in U.S. history. It’s important to note that the story doesn’t end there, and that the residents of Greenwood rebuilt and continued to thrive. The entrepreneurial spirit still lives on with Black-owned businesses on Greenwood Ave like Silhouette Sneakers , Black Wall Street Tees & Souvenirs , Frio’s Gourmet Pops and Wanda J’s restaurant.

Greenwood Rising is set to open summer 2021

I recommend starting your day in Greenwood with a tour of the Greenwood Cultural Center , where you’ll get a well-rounded backstory of the great men and women that made Black Wall Street what it was. Follow that with a photo opp in front of the Black Wall Street mural just outside the Cultural Center. Afterwards, head to Greenwood Rising (set to open summer 2021) for an interactive experience that chronicles race relations in the USA, the Tulsa Race Massacre, and what comes next.

Indulge in Soul Food

You can’t visit Tulsa without trying some home-cooked style soul food. As previously mentioned, Wanda J’s is the place to be if you’re on Greenwood Ave. You can’t go wrong with any of the main dishes (catfish and meatloaf were our personal favorites,) just make sure you try the yams and mac & cheese! The greens are also delectable when they don’t sell out. Another notable soul food spot to add to your list would be Sweet Lisa’s Cafe. Also in the Greenwood area: Food Trucks at Guthrie Green.

The soul food at Wanda J’s is next level!

Philbrook Museum of Art & explore gardens

The Philbrook Museum of Art should be high on your list of things to do in Tulsa, because it’s got incredible art and an equally impressive botanical garden! The museum is located in a beautiful former 1920s villa, and houses some amazing pieces from a diverse range of artists. They even have a piece from Kehinde Wiley, the genius behind President Obama’s official portrait. Entry is $12 for adults, and I recommend going on a Friday when it’s open from 9am-9pm. I loved exploring the offerings of the museum in the afternoon when it’s hottest, then strolling in the garden just before sunset as the temperature cooled down.

Relax at Centennial Park

Centennial Park has some of the best views in Tulsa. It’s a city park with a small pond surrounded by plenty of benches, grassy areas, and a prime view of downtown Tulsa. There is a path that leads you around the pond, and you can get some great photos if you walk along the path.

Brunch at Mother Road Market

Mother Road Market , located along Route 66, is the place to be if you’re looking for variety! It’s Oklahoma’s first food hall and has an eclectic offering of good food and unique retail. Some stalls that you can’t miss are Big Dipper Creamery for ice cream made from locally sourced ingredients, Da Yolk for brunch staples, and Umami Fries for the best loaded fries ever. I’m still mesmerized just thinking about their Gogi Beef Fries! Please note that it’s closed on Mondays. Check out www.motherroadmarket.store for merch.

Explore Gathering Place

If you’re traveling with kids, then Gathering Place should absolutely be on your list of things to do in Tulsa! Even if you don’t have little ones, it’s the perfect spot for kids of all ages and exercise enthusiasts. The Gathering Place is a Riverfront Park that offers a range of attractions from a skatepark (great people watching!) to basketball courts. Best of all, there is no entry fee. Did I mention that it was also named the Best City Park in the U.S.?

Explore the McNellie’s Group Dining

Formed in 2009, the McNellie’s Group owns and operates a number of restaurants and bars throughout in Tulsa. I’d recommend Wild Fork for lunch or dinner. It’s located in Tulsa’s finest outdoor shopping center, where you can enjoy some window shopping after your meal. For breakfast, check out Dilly Diner for classic staples like chicken and waffles and pancakes. If you feel like staying in, you can order some tacos from Fajita Town. Check out their website for the full list of restaurants.

Take a pic with the Tulsa flag

If you want to snap a few pics for the ‘gram, the Tulsa flag mural is a perfect spot!  It’s located at 1238 S Peoria Ave, Tulsa, OK 74120 next to Kazar Audio Video Home Theater Store. It’s in a parking lot, so be mindful when taking photos.

10 must-see places in Oklahoma to add to your travel bucket list

W hether you're a lifelong Oklahoman or a visitor to the state, there are places in Oklahoma that should make it onto your bucket list.

Here are 10 must-see places in the Sooner State.

Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum

A trip to the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum is necessary for those who want to learn more about the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and remember those who were killed.

The Field of Empty Chairs and the Reflection Pool take the place of where the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building once stood, memorializing the 168 who lost their lives in the bombing. The museum tells the story of the bombing, how Oklahoma recovered and what lessons can be learned from the tragedy.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

True to its name, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge "preserves approximately 60,000 acres of mixed grass prairie, ancient granite mountains, and fresh water lakes and streams for the benefit of wildlife and the American people," according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Visitors are likely to see roaming bison, longhorn cattle and elk. The refuge, near the Lawton and Fort Sill area in southwest Oklahoma, is ripe with scenic views and opportunities for exploring the outdoors while hiking, camping, kayaking and fishing.

Alabaster Caverns State Park

Northwest Oklahoma is home to this rarity, one of the largest gypsum caves in the world. Visitors can join one of the daily guided tours of the cave for a fee — tours leave on the hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Alabaster Caverns State Park , located just south of Freedom, Oklahoma, also features hiking trails and reservable RV and tent camping sites.

Center of the Universe

A mysterious acoustic phenomenon takes place in downtown Tulsa, known as the "Center of the Universe," marked by a concrete circle in the midst of a larger circle of bricks at 1 S Boston Ave.

According to Atlas Obscura: "If you stand in the middle of the circle and make a noise, the sound is echoed back several times louder than it was made. It’s your own private amplified echo chamber."

But, to anyone outside the circle your voice is "extremely distorted."

Talimena Scenic Byway

This awe-inspiring 54-mile route in southeast Oklahoma is known for its views, especially during a colorful Oklahoma fall or vibrant springtime.

The Talimena Scenic Byway was built through one of the highest mountain ranges between the Rockies and the Appalachians specifically to showcase the area's foliage. There are 22 designated vistas along the route, which include interpretive signage.

Philbrook Museum of Art

Inside the former Tulsa home of oil pioneer Waite Phillips and his wife Genevieve is the Philbrook Museum of Art , at 2727 S Rockford Road, complete with the breathtaking formal gardens in the back.

The Philbrook has a series of rotating and permanent exhibits, ranging from ancient to modern art from America and beyond.

First Americans Museum

Located along the Oklahoma River and near the crossroads of Interstates 35, 40, 235 and 44 is Oklahoma City's First Americans Museum . The museum is dedicated to sharing the collective histories of the 39 federally recognized tribes in the state of Oklahoma.

Visitors can explore the cultural diversity of the distinctive tribes and, for many of the tribes now residing in Oklahoma, learn what the process of removal from their ancestral homelands was like 200 years ago.

Turner Falls State Park

Situated in some of the oldest mountains on earth, the Arbuckle Mountains, is Turner Falls State Park . The park is home to one of Oklahoma's tallest waterfalls — it's tied with the waterfall inside eastern Oklahoma's Natural Falls State Park.

Visitors to the falls near Davis, Oklahoma can enjoy swimming, hiking and camping.

"Turner Falls Park has been described as one of the three geological windows into the planet's past, along with the Grand Canyon and the Black Hills of South Dakota," according to Travel OK.

Collings Castle

This medieval-style castle is actually within Turner Falls State Park.

Built in the 1930s as a private residence, visitors can explore the ruins of Collings Castle featuring bunkhouses, parapets with narrow windows and a fireplace adorned with native rose rocks — though much of the fireplace has been chipped away and some of the walls are crumbling.

Pioneer Woman Mercantile

In the small, northeastern Oklahoma town of Pawhuska is Pioneer Woman Mercantile , home to food television personality Ree Drummond's restaurant, bakery and store.

Also known as "The Merc," visitors can expect delicious foods and baked goods, as well as lots of Pioneer Woman branded items just waiting to come home with them. Plus, there are free daily tours of The Lodge on Drummond Ranch where Drummond films her Food Network show.

100 YEARS: Tulsa leaders want more attractions on Route 66 before centennial

tulsa oklahoma tourism

TULSA, Okla. — The city of Tulsa is looking to bring in new attractions along Route 66 ahead of the Mother Road Centennial and is looking for ideas.

Some would say Mary Beth Babcock is the queen of Tulsa's Route 66. She owns Buck Atom's Cosmic Curios , Buck's Vintage, and soon, Meadow Gold Mack's.

"It'll be a mix of all different artists and shops," Babcock told 2 News.

Babcock lives and breathes Route 66 because she says it's fun and a tourism generator.

"It's too bad that it's taken this long for us to get it," Babcock said. "But it's here, and now, we move forward!"

The city of Tulsa wants to move forward by looking ahead to the 2026 Route 66 Centennial by requesting four requests for proposals.

The first plan would be to build a roadside attraction that coincides with Route 66's heritage and aesthetic on Crybaby Hill - a famous spot for cyclists during the St. Francis Tulsa Tough event.

However, the roadside attraction cannot be bigger than Buck Atom at Babcock's Buck Atom's Cosmic Curios store.

The second plan includes a new development at Riverside and Southwest Boulevard to complement the Crybaby Hill attraction. A hotel or restaurant could be a possibility.

The third plan would be an interactive experience, such as an outdoor digital museum. The goal is to enrich understanding of Route 66. This plan requires two proposals.

"We need to attract people – again – to come and stay and go to the museum and stop at this Route 66 experience. Stay at a motor court. We need a really cool Route 66 motor court and I heard that's in talks as well," Babcock added.

WATCH: U.S. Bike Route 66 sign unveiling at Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios

The links to all of the requests for proposals can be found here .

Eclipse brings tourism and challenges as Oklahoma goes under the shadow of the Moon

Glasses commemorating the 2024 solar eclipse are for sale at visitor centers across the state, including the state Capitol.

Any point on the globe can expect to see a total solar eclipse about once every 400 years. This Monday, it’s far southeast Oklahoma’s turn.

Everyone in Oklahoma will experience at least a partial solar eclipse on April 8. It’s an impressive sight. It happened here last year. But being in the totality is completely different — awe inspiring and life-changing — at least that’s according to eclipse chaser David Baron.

“It’s the most dazzling sight in the heavens. It looks like a wreath or a crown that’s made out of tinsel or silk. You see these strands to it. And it just shimmers out in space,” he said.

Baron was a science correspondent for NPR back in the 1990s, and now writes books.

“If you are anywhere near the path of totality, you should make it a priority to get into the path of totality, because in some ways the biggest tragedy of all is to see a 99% partial eclipse because you could’ve gone 20 or 30 miles and you would’ve seen the full thing,” he said.

Hochatown, near Beavers Bend State Park, has a population of about 250. Broken Bow, about 4,000. It’s anticipated 60,000 people will descend on the area by Monday to experience totality. That’s going to put an enormous strain on the infrastructure of mainly two-lane rural highways. State officials have been preparing for this, literally for years.

“This is going to be very challenging”, Department of Transportation Executive Director Tim Gatz said. “Expect first responders to take a little longer than normal to reach a situation that might develop. So we’ve really got to have that awareness. Fill your gas tank if you’re down there. Anticipate that you could be stuck in congestion for an extended period of time.”

The National Guard is being deployed. It’s suggested travelers bring physical maps along with them as the cell service in the area will likely be overwhelmed and GPS spotty. Pets that come along need to be fully vaccinated. Animals can behave strangely and unexpectedly during a total eclipse. There’s a lot for sightseers and authorities to get ready for. The same is true for local businesses.

“Well, we expect a lot of traffic,” Janet Cress, owner of Janet’s Treasure Chest in Hochatown said. “Most of our whole area is on septic systems. We can’t handle people coming into our business just to use the bathroom, not to shop, not to buy anything, just to use the bathroom. So for the Town of Hochatown, we’re going to provide 24 port-a-potties up and down our strip here so people have a place to go to the bathroom so they won’t overload our systems.”

Janet Cress, owner of Janet's Treasure Chest

Cress is worried about the sheer number of people coming to Hochatown. But that worry is tempered by what the Department of Tourism estimates to be $7.4 million in economic impact per day this weekend and into Monday.

A few miles away in the North Pole Community, Tinecia Hearne said her convenience store is going to great lengths to accommodate the coming influx of visitors, ensuring fuel tanks are full and there’s plenty of product in stock.

“We are making sure that we have somebody sleep at the store the entire time, because we want to make sure they’re able to get here and they’re not stuck,” Hearne said. “So we have made a bedroom here so that we can be open 24 hours during that time period.”

Local businesses are gearing up. Throngs of people are flocking to this small corner of Oklahoma. And state agencies and officials say they’re ready with a plan to deal with it all. Let’s just hope for clear skies.
