The Best of Turin

Juventus Stadium Museum guide | History, tours & more

You may have seen them play at one of the big competitions around Europe, but have you ever wondered “ Where does Juventus play when they’re at home? ”

Turin has many fascinating claims to fame, including being home to the legendary Juventus Football Club. Juve fans can delight in the many football-oriented activities and attractions throughout the city.

Visit the museum dedicated to the history of the team, watch a match at Allianz Stadium – Juventus’ home base, and stop off to buy licensed merchandise from the official stores. If you’re a fan of Juventus or just a football enthusiast, Turin offers a trip to remember.

Read on to discover where and how to enjoy everything ‘Juve’-related while visiting Turin.

Juventus F.C history

The now-celebrated football team came from humble beginnings, having started off as a bunch of school kids playing football. That was in 1897 and since then the club has formed into a successful, honored part of Italian football history.

Juve played their first official competition in 1900 against Torinese. And in 1905, they won their first Serie A competition. In 2016, the club was relegated to Serie B for a short period.

The club’s name means ‘Youth’ in Latin, but Italians often call the team “The Old Lady”, among other quirky nicknames. Throughout the years, the club has seen some notable names in the sport, including Álvaro Morata in past years, and more recently, Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Beating all other Italian football teams, Juventus has, to date, won 59 of the official competitions they’ve played. It’s clear as to why they’re one of the country’s favorite teams.

How to visit the Juventus Museum

The Juventus Museum incorporates the history of not only the club and team, but also of Turin’s relationship with football and the story of Italy’s national football team .

The museum opened up in 2012, marking the 115th anniversary of the club. It’s a bilingual building, offering exhibitions in both Italian and English. And, you’ll get to see the Juve score room, which showcases goals scored by the team.

There is also a trophy room, a space dedicated to the millions of Juve F.C fans, and a history room filled with memorabilia. As well as plenty more fascinating tributes to the past and present Juventus legend.

Visitors can access the museum every day except Tuesday. Opening hours start at 10:30 and the building closes at either 18:00 or 19:30, depending on the day and season.

You’ll find the Juventus museum in the same complex as the Juventus home stadium, so visiting both at the same time is convenient and a popular activity. Even if you’re not able to watch a live match, take a tour through the stadium and learn more about it.

Juventus Stadium tour

The Juventus Museum offers an enthralling look into the history of the club and football in Italy. But, to get the real feel of what this sport and team mean to the country and world, a stadium tour is a must.

This relatively new structure was opened in 2011 after replacing the much larger stadium, the Stadio delle Alpi, which was opened in 1990 to host the 1990 World Cup. The 2014 UEFA Europa League final match was played in Juventus’ stadium.

The Juventus stadium tour offers a look at the locker rooms, pitch, media area, and hospitality room. Tours are given on match days too, so you can easily plan a 3-in-1 trip (museum, tour, match) and enjoy the electric atmosphere before the game.

You can purchase tickets for the tours together with museum access tickets, either online or at the ticket office. The tours are done in Italian, but audio guides are sold in other languages, including English and German. The tour is not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers, unfortunately.

Buy Juventus tickets – Home matches

Strangely, Juventus’ ± 41 000-seater stadium doesn’t see very many fans sitting down to watch a home game. But, that just means more availability for those who are keen to see the team play.

There’s nothing quite like experiencing the fans’ energy in the stadium – it’s close to electrifying. You can get your tickets for games during the season – from August to May – but I suggest you book in advance as much as possible, just to be safe.

There are a number of websites that sell match tickets for games in Italy, however, some are resellers and not all are trustworthy. The safest option would be to buy tickets directly from the club website .

You could also try and grab tickets from a website like TicketOne. Or, if you’re in Italy with enough time, find one of the ticket office boxes in the city.

Official Juventus merch stores

If you’re looking for souvenirs to take home with you, visit one of the official stores where you’ll find a variety of Juventus merchandise.

If you’re already at the stadium, you can pop into the store in the same complex. Or, if you’re visiting on match day, simply seek out one of the 11 sales points scattered around the stadium.

For those who have already left the stadium, you can still grab your keepsakes and mementos at the store in Turin city center, near to the Royal Palace of Turin . So wherever in the city you find yourself, you can still find a match kit, toys, or other branded items.

Note: Outside of Turin, you’ll also find official stores in Rome and Milan.

Allianz Stadium (Juventus Stadium)

Juventus Stadium

Club: Juventus FC | Opening: 2011 | Capacity: 41,000 seats

History and description

Allianz Stadium, previously known as Juventus Stadium, replaced Juventus’ old Stadio Delle Alpi , which had only been the home of the club since 1990. Juventus fans had never warmed up to Delle Alpi though, with most complaints involving the distance between stands and pitch, poor sightlines and lack of atmosphere.

As early as 2003, Juventus therefore already started making plans to build a new stadium, and after they had bought Delle Alpi from the city of Turin, they moved to Stadio Olimpico di Torino in anticipation of returning to a new home in a few years time.

Demolition of Delle Alpi started in 2008 and soon after works on the new stadium began. Juventus Stadium officially opened on 8 September 2011 with a match between Juventus and Notts County (1-1). Notts County had been chosen because of the historic ties the clubs have had since 1903 when Englishman and Juventus player John Savage arranged for Juventus to wear the black-and-white kit that Notts County traditionally play in.

Juventus Stadium hosted the 2014 Europa League final  between Sevilla and Benfica, which ended in a 0-0 draw and was won on penalties by the Spanish side.

In 2017, the club announced a 6-year naming rights sponsorship deal with insurer Allianz resulting in the new name Allianz Stadium of Turin.

How to get to Allianz Stadium

Allianz Stadium is located in the north of Turin, approximately 7 kilometres from Turin’s city centre and main Porta Nuovo railway station.

The stadium lies just south of Turin’s semi ring road, the Tangenziale. Take exit Venaria from the northern section of the road.

On matchdays a special tram service (line 9) connects the stadium with metro stop Bernini. Bernini can be reached with metro line 1 from Turin train stations Porta Nuova and Porta Susa.

On non-matchdays the stadium is best reached by bus . From the city centre (Via 20 Settembre – Via Bertola) take bus 72 or 72b in the direction of Viale Bruno Sper. or Picco. The journey takes almost 40 minutes, get off at stop Stadio Alpi. Both buses also pass train station Porta Susa.

Address: Corso Gaetano Scirea 50, Torino

Eat, sleep, and drink near Allianz Stadium

Allianz Stadium is located on the outskirts of the city of Turin in a quiet residential area. With their new stadium, Juventus also opened a medium-sized shopping centre, Area12 , which has a few food outlets. Apart from that, there are few options to eat or drink around the stadium, and doing so in Turin’s pleasant city centre may be the better alternative.

The newly opened Hotel Master lies right next to the stadium, gets good reviews, and is reasonably affordable. Hotel Galant , a road-side hotel near the Tangenziale, is a comparable alternative. It lies slightly further away from the stadium, but can be convienent for those arriving by car. For all hotels near Juventus Stadium click here .

However, if you are spending more than a day in Turin, you will likely have a better time staying at a hotel closer to the city centre. Picking a hotel near Porta Susa station may be convenient in terms of public transport to the stadium, but there is more choice near Turin’s other main station, Porta Nuova .

Juventus Tickets

Tickets for Juventus games can be bought online via Listicket , by phone 892 101 (from Italy) or +39 02 600 60 900 (from abroad), or at one of the Listicket sales points . For certain sections possession of a Tessera del Tifoso fan card may be required.

Juventus sold out most matches in their first few seasons at Juventus Stadium and most matches are still close to a sell-out. It is therefore recommended to book as much in advance as possible. Tickets usually go on sale two weeks before the match.

If the match is sold out or if you wish to purchase longer in advance, you can revert to ticket websites such as viagogo , who offer a reliable alternative and take care of the repersonalisation of the tickets where required. Of course, prices will generally be higher than face value.

Ticket prices depend on the opponent, but typically start at €30.00 for a seat behind one of the goals and range up to €105.00 for the central seats at the long sides. Other seats at the sides tend to go for between €65.00 and €95.00.

Stadium tours

Juventus Stadium houses the Juventus museum, which showcases the history of the club. On top of that, the club organises guided stadium tours that include access to the dressing rooms, players’ tunnel and media areas.

The museum opens every day of the week except Tuesdays from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm and until 7:30 pm on the weekends.

Tours run Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 11:00 am, 12:30 pm, 2:45 pm, and 4:15 pm. On the weekends and public holidays they run every half an hour between 11:00 am and 5:30 pm, though it is advised to check current timetables on Juventus’ official website .

Tours can be booked online or at the Ticket Office at the stadium. Entrance to the museum costs €15.00, the combination of tour and museum €22.00.

We recently attended Juventus v Empoli. Metro to Bernini was easy enough on the single metro line, we then had to find the bus stop for shuttle buses to the stadium, which is not well sign posted. No scrum to board when the bus arrived and it took about 30 minutes to reach the ground. There are a few bars/restaurants in the little shopping centre next to the ground and these were not packed as you would find in other countries. We had a beer at a stall and again there was no great queue. Rigorous security checked tickets against our ID, once inside there are plenty of bars and no apparent problem taking beer into the stands. Sadly the game and the atmosphere were awful. I guess this is what happens when you are virtually guaranteed to win your 8th title in a row and are resting players for the Champions League. The hundred or so Empoli fans made more noise than the 40,000 home fans, the “ultras” remained quiet and put their flags down during the game. It’s a nice stadium, very compact for it’s capacity and I’m sure would hold a decent atmosphere if you attend the right game. As for the ticket portal – chaotic would describe it. I found tickets continued to come on sale right up to the day we left for Italy so if you miss out initially it is worth checking again every day.

Was disappointed when I visited the new Stadium (last Nov. before watching Juve Pescara game) since the guided tour is not explained in English only Italian and could not understand a single word… Want to ask you if the Champions League final game in Cardiff on 3rd June would transmitted on screens in the Juve Stadium in order to fly to Torino to watch same. If yes where can we get the relevant ticket for same. thanking you in advance for your assistance and look forward to read from you.

Easily one of the ten best stadiums in Europe. Great architecture, perfect view and sound and the view is good from anywhere. Only minor thing is the four cables in the corners which obstruct the view to a minimum degree. The fans sing all the time. Yes tickets are expensive, because it is sold out most times, but better that than 41.000 in a 80.000 stadium.

I went to Juve vs Lazio in 2012 too, but I bought the ticket for 200 euros in black market. It really deserved this price.

I went to see Juve against Lazio in 2012. Tickets are often sold out, but i kept looking at Listicket for a general sale date. Therefore i managed to buy 2 tickets for 45 Euros each. Stadium is very easily reached by public transport. You will need an id or passport to gain an access to the stadium! Great atmosphere at Juventus stadium and great city to visit!

Juventus Arena or the Allianz Stadium for sponsorship reasons first opened on 8th September 2011 and since then it has proven to be a fortress for The Old Lady. Constructed on the site of the former Stadio Delle Alpi very much in the English mould, it is rightly so the envy of opposition fans across the peninsula.

Juventus Stadium Guide

Allianz stadium history.

The Juventus Stadium first opened on 8th September 2011 with the opening ceremony and inaugural match held against the oldest professional football club Notts County , who provided the inspiration for The Old Lady’s famous black and white stripes. Three days later the first Serie A match was held against Parma with Stephan Lichsteiner scoring the first goal during the 17th minute.

Previously the club had played their home matches at the municipally owned Stadio delle Alpi which was constructed for Italia 90. The stadium proved to be incredibly unpopular with fans due to the athletics track and  attracted on average less than third of the stadium’s total 67,000 capacity.

In 2003 Juventus negotiated a deal to purchase the stadium from the council and temporarily moved into the newly renovated Stadio Olimpico . In November 2008 the club revealed that they intended to demolish the Delle Alpi and create a brand stadium on the same site, at a cost of €100 million.

Two years later the new stadium was completed becoming the first self-financed and club owned stadium in Italy. With a new precedent set for Italian Football there are hopes that Juventus’ Stadium can inspire other teams to follow the English and German model of purpose-built stadiums.

During the 2013/2014 season, Juventus Stadium hosted the Europa League final between Sevilla and Benfica , with the Spaniards winning 4-2 on penalties. The Old Lady had a chance to play the final in their own back yard but narrowly lost out in the semi-finals to the Portuguese giants.

From the 1st July 2017 Juventus announced that the ground would officially be known as the Allianz Stadium of Turin until 2023 – at least for the next six seasons.

Juventus Arena can be divided into four parts or so: Curva Nord, Tribuna Est, Curva Sud and Tribuna Ovest.

Matchday Experience

Allianz stadium away section.

Away fans are housed in a small corner section within the north-east stand which is separated from the home supporters by perspex screens. The standard ticket allocation for the travelling supporters is usually 2,000 however it’s only really full for big Champions League matches and when Juventus Serie A rivals come to town.

The relatively low roof helps the acoustics of the ground greatly, with noise exchanged between the away section and the opposite ultra end, the curva sud. Views of the pitch are generally great although the cable support and barrier to the pitch can restrict the minority of sight lines.

Best Pubs near ground

Juventus Arena sits at the heart of a wider commercial area known as the Area 12 shopping centre . As well as containing over 60 shops, and several restaurants from sit-down Italians to fast food, Area 12 also contains two bars where you can grab a drink from before kick-off.

Within the city centre there are a number of watering holes where you can drink before and after the match with the map containing some of the more popular pubs amongst football fans.

Food - Places to eat

Towards the north-east quadrant of the ground on Via Torino Druento there is a franchise of the omnipresent McDonald’s burger chain which predictably does a roaring trade on matchdays.

Besides this recognisable name there is a scattering of independently run pizza places dotted around the ground including the likes of Restorante Mucca Pazza Venaria, La Piazzetta and Pizzeria O’Sole Mio.

Juventus Club Shop

Inside Juventus Store

Located within the Area 12 shopping centre towards the north-eastern side of the stadium, The Juventus Store is the largest football club shop in Italy spanning over 550 metres of Bianconeri bliss. It really does sell anything you could ever want, and besides the Juventus Online Store , it really is the best place to purchase items belonging to the Old Lady!

Opening Hours:

  • Monday 12:00 pm – 9:30 pm
  • Tuesday to Friday 8:30 am – 9:30 pm
  • Sunday and bank holidays 9:00 am – 9:00 pm

adidas, Juventus and the Swedish Girls collaborate at Milan Design Week!

16 April 2024

A coming toegther of art, design and football.

The adidas Flagship store in Milan, on the occasion of Milan Design Week 2024, is hosting a very special and iconic piece: the "Seats System" series, a modular seating project conceived by the Swedish Girls, alias Mira Bergh and Josefin Zachrisson, a duo of Swedish designers based between Milan and Stockholm.

What makes their work even more special is the fact that it is a true creative journey, revolving around two elements: the iconic 1970s tracksuit by adidas Originals and the famous bench on which Juventus originated, back in 1897.

FSR57368

adidas, Juventus and the Swedish Girls are therefore celebrating a creative union combining style, design and passion: to celebrate the adidas Originals Essentials capsule collection, adidas and Juventus have therefore chosen to entrust the Swedish Girls with the creation of a work inspired by the main piece of the collection: a work that goes beyond time and space, embodying the soul of two iconic brands, translated into a single, extraordinary vision.

FSR57287

And from 16 April, at the Flaghsip adidas store in Milan, their work will be on display for the entire week, until Sunday 21, with four Juventus players present as well, namely Andrea Cambiaso, Samuel Iling-Junior, Timothy Weah and Kenan Yildiz.

WHAT IS THE SEATS SYSTEM

The Seats System is a series of modular seats designed by Swedish Girls. The carefully calculated radii, profiles and angles result in a precise system produced by machines, but assembled and welded by hand. Thanks to the choice of durable materials and the focus on the social aspect, the Seats System can be adapted to any space: indoor and outdoor, public and private.

Zappella: This squad has a lot of untapped potential

15 April 2024

With Serie A having returned from its latest international break this weekend, Juventus have had to wait until Monday to return to action. Ahead of the Bianconere’s big away game at Roma, Coach Giuseppe Zappella has given his pre-match thoughts.

Monday’s game against the Giallorosse is set for 18:00 CEST in the capital.

BACK TO ACTION AFTER THE BREAK

“The girls have returned in good form from their national teams. They all picked up good results, so they’ve come back with a lot of desire. Of course for the Italian girls there’s a bit of regret after the loss to Finland, especially after their big win against the Netherlands, but I’m sure that they’re ready to give their all for our next league game.”

TAKING ON ROMA

“We’ll face a tough team in Roma, but if we want to build on our excellent win against Fiorentina then we’ll have to play well in every way, especially from a mental standpoint. We know that we’re facing the strongest opponent we have at the moment, and we need to come into the game with real character. The group is good, calm. There’s a good atmosphere and I’m happy about that, so we’ll go away to Rome knowing that we have recovered something important as a squad. As I’ve said a few times in these last few weeks, there’s a lot of potential in this squad that hasn’t been shown this season, and that has to shine through in our last six games of the campaign. They will all be important games for us, not so much for the table, but to rediscover the right spirit of what it means to be Juventus. The girls need to always be aware of the importance of the shirt they’re representing.”

GAMA AND CARUSO: TWO IMPORTANT RENEWALS

“In the last few days we’ve experienced some very strong emotions with the renewals of Sara Gama and Arianna Caruso. Regarding Sara, I think what we saw from her on the field last time out against Fiorentina says all that needs to be said. She’s the captain of this team, it’s felt and seen. I’m really happy for her because this team needs a player who can motivate it like she does.

“On Arianna, she’s the player with the most appearances for Juventus and she’s still so young. I think that her path so far has been unique, even if she doesn’t know it [laughs], she should understand how extraordinary her journey has been. What she’s done isn’t something that just anybody can do, and she should be extremely proud of herself.”

Caruso: I never thought this dream come true would be possible

14 April 2024

“I’m happy, honoured. To sign a contract until 2026 with this shirt gives me real pride, it’s something I never would have thought was possible. I’m happy with what I’ve done already, and I can’t wait to continue to write more success stories together.”

Those were the words with which Arianna Caruso responded to her most recent contract extension with Juventus, which will take her through with the Bianconere until 30 June, 2026.

“What words come to mind when I think about my journey with Juventus? Difficulty, because it was hard at the beginning. I was young, I left home, school, and all that I had in Rome. But then, at the same time, I’d use the word ‘dream’. I would never have thought that I’d wear this shirt, it really was an impossibility. Then there’s passion, because that’s what Juventus is.”

THOSE EARLY DAYS, SEVEN YEARS AGO…

“I remember that first time at Pianezza very well, in 2017, but I also remember my first moments here with my parents, seeing the trophies, the stadium, it was a little bit of a shock to the system and at the same time it was a dream come true. I remember clearly all of the steps I’ve taken since then, and I think I’ll always carry them with me.”

caruso renewal 2024 25

ON BEING ONE OF THE MOST EXPERIENCED

“It’s not easy to pass on what the older girls have passed on to me. I think of girls like Martina Rosucci, Sara Gama, Barbara Bonansea, who passed on the values of Juventus to me. Martina, in particular, was fundamental. She has been a very important part of my story. Now times have changed and I hope to be able to pass those same things on to the younger generation. If I’ve made it this far then I have them to thank for it, I haven’t fully realised the value of what I’ve experienced in my time here, but I think it will become clear as time passes to those who pass through in the future.”

GAMES THAT STAND OUT

“One game? More than anything else I have a season that comes to mind, the year in which we won each of our 22 games in Serie A. It was a crazy, incredible year. But there are so many other memories, a standout was playing against Fiorentina at the Allianz Stadium in front of 40,000 people, the Champions League games, and thankfully there have been a lot of games, which means I have a lot of real beautiful memories.”

“To win. Everything.”

Premier League ticket prices are rising – but how do they compare?

“Away from home our fans are fantastic, I’d call them the hardcore fans. But at home, they’ll have their few drinks and probably their prawn sandwiches, and they don’t realise what’s going on out on the pitch.”

Roy Keane’s post-match comments in 2000 became infamous for digging out certain sections of the Old Trafford crowd.

Yet fast-forward almost a quarter of a century and those fans wanting to spend money on a meal and a few drinks in a stadium are precisely the ones Premier League clubs are keen to attract.

As Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Manchester United ’s new co-owner, put it last month: “The future of football is not going to be you just go to a football match, you leave and you go home. The future — which they recognise at the Bernabeu and the Nou Camp — is that you provide more entertainment, it’s more of a campus. You have a bite to eat, you watch something on the screens, you do a bit of shopping.

“If people, instead of spending two quid on a burger at half-time, stay there for a couple of hours and spend £15, it’s win-win. The fans benefit because there’s stuff to do. The club benefits because they can buy better players.”

This gradual shift towards an American model where clubs value “dwell time” in a stadium — half of the 20 Premier League teams are now part or fully owned by Americans or U.S. companies — comes at a time of increased tension between supporters and clubs over rising ticket prices.

In recent weeks, protests have been staged at Tottenham Hotspur , Manchester City and Fulham , with fans accusing clubs of exploiting their loyalty during the cost of living crisis.

So with ticket prices under the spotlight, how does the cost and availability of a Premier League game compare to other sports?

Explained: How to build a football stadium

Premier League ticket prices have become a divisive issue as clubs toe a fine line between the need to appease a local and loyal fanbase while trying to entice a more global following and bring in extra revenue.

For many supporters, it increasingly feels as if the latter is winning out and the hike in costs is a tax on loyalty.

At the end of March, many Tottenham fans turned their back on the match against Luton Town on 65 minutes in protest at the club’s plans to remove concessions for new senior season-ticket holders aged 65 or over — and reduce the discount for those presently holding such concessions — from the 2024-25 season.

Tottenham already sell the second-most expensive season ticket in the country. A day later, at the Etihad Stadium, the Manchester City fans group, the 1894 , unfurled a banner saying: “Record profits but record prices. Stop exploiting our loyalty!” City are the world’s second-richest club according to Deloitte, posting record revenues of €826million (£706m; $885m) last season.

juventus stadium tour tickets

Earlier this season, Fulham fans protested before their match against Manchester United after the club charged £160 ($200) for seats in the Riverside Stand, while overall adult season ticket prices jumped 18 per cent in a year and now total as much as £3,000 (the most expensive in the country).

This came after 17 of the 20 Premier League clubs announced season-ticket increases for this campaign. For next season, Arsenal have raised season tickets by six per cent in the lower tier and four per cent in the upper tier (ranging from £1,073 to £2,050). Tottenham also increased season ticket prices by six per cent (ranging from £856 to £2,367), while Manchester United and Manchester City’s are going up by five per cent.

go-deeper

Brighton season tickets are rising between five and eight per cent, Brentford up 10 per cent, and Burnley ’s by more than that. On Merseyside, Everton and Liverpool are also putting up costs while some Aston Villa fans in the Holte End are having their seats removed to make way for hospitality.

At last night’s Europa League match against Atalanta , there were no flags on the Kop in protest against the two per cent rise in the cost of Liverpool’s season tickets and members’ tickets next season.

Fans feel frustrated as, according to Deloitte, matchday takings account for only 18 per cent of revenue for the world’s 20 richest clubs, far less than commercial (42 per cent) and broadcast (40 per cent) areas, with ticket prices an even smaller fraction of that.

“More and more fans are being made to feel like a customer instead of a supporter,” Dominic Rosso, vice-chair of the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust, said. “It feels that football is being stripped of its soul.”

Wary of profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) , clubs are looking for ways to cash in on lucrative high-end or premium tickets. For their match against Manchester United on April 4, Chelsea offered fans the chance to sit behind the home dugout for £5,000. Manchester City offer an ‘autograph’ package for £4,200 for a match that includes a meet-and-greet with a club legend, stadium tour and the chance to see players from the glass tunnel. West Ham have a £4,000 ticket that includes a helicopter ride over the capital.

For next season — and perhaps a sign of shifting times — Manchester City have created a flexi-gold ticket, which keeps a seat for a £150 membership fee, then gives the option of picking matches, paying full general admission prices.

Away from season tickets, the price to watch a regular Premier League match is also going up.

At present, home tickets cost somewhere in the region of £45-£60. However, especially at bigger clubs, they are extremely difficult to buy — and tend to float around in a close and trusted network of match-going family or friends. Away tickets are capped at £30; a hard-won concession fought for by fans.

juventus stadium tour tickets

The most expensive non-hospitality ticket at Liverpool, for example, is £60. At Manchester City, it is £75. The cheapest ticket in the division is for a very restricted (and for those with a local ‘L’ postcode) £9 ticket at Anfield, while the priciest (non-hospitality) is a £240 ticket at Chelsea’s plush Westview area.

Buying a paid membership (around £30-£60 a year) is essential to purchasing a ticket at many clubs, particularly the biggest names. At these clubs, tickets rarely, if ever, go on general sale to non-members for Premier League games.

In La Liga , the average lowest price of a ticket is €37 while the highest is €91. The league’s most recognisable names — Real Madrid , Barcelona and Atletico Madrid — have memberships but around half do not, and it’s generally easier to buy a ticket for a match in Spain. Serie A in Italy tickets can be even cheaper (as little as €10 at Empoli, to around €40 at Lazio) but it’s tough to purchase tickets at iconic grounds such as San Siro for AC Milan and Inter Milan , and the Allianz Arena for Juventus , where there’s always high demand.

As with most of the bigger clubs in England, tickets to watch a popular Bundesliga teams (a league known for its relative affordability) rarely appear on general sale and are only available to season ticket holders or members. However, the cheapest season ticket in the league is €250 at Wolfsburg and the most expensive is €978 at Cologne.

This can all feel confusing to overseas fans who are often surprised by the modest price of Premier League tickets, especially when compared to some other sports, but taken aback by the lack of availability.

In American sports, the dynamic pricing structure means tickets can often be bought on the day for most games, albeit for a hefty amount.

It is against that backdrop that clubs are keen to create more of an American-style matchday experience for supporters, with Tottenham the envy of other Premier League owners .

Spurs bring in close to £6million every match, whereas their old White Hart Lane stadium would bring in on average £1m per home game. The stadium is better equipped with bars than anywhere else in the league.

They also host music concerts — they had five nights of Beyonce at the end of last season — and have a 10-year agreement to host NFL matches, with Spurs receiving a hire fee for every match. They also take a cut of the millions of pounds of food and drink revenue — roughly three times higher than it would be for a Tottenham game — from these events.

juventus stadium tour tickets

This has led to accusations Tottenham are putting the squeeze on season ticket holders as they seek to attract a more transient crowd, who are happy to spend more in the ground.

However, manager Ange Postecoglou defended the club’s approach last month when a reporter asked if tourist fans could be considered “plastic”.

In response, he said: “That’s really harsh. I’m probably ‘plastic’ and ‘touristy’ because I came from the other side of the world, (but I was) really passionate about football, and if I could get access to see a Premier League game that was the world to me.

“So to label people ‘plastic’ or ‘tourists’… I don’t think that’s fair just because people live on the other side of the world. This football club has supporters all over the world. It has supporters all over the UK who don’t always get access to the games and we should always accommodate them.”

How does this stack up against other sports?

Much like the Premier League, the cost of watching other elite sports continues to rise, with concerns it’s becoming a preserve for the wealthy.

The cheapest ticket for England ’s rugby union match against New Zealand at Twickenham on November 2 is £99 for an adult, with the most expensive £229. For England’s Six Nations campaign this year, a standard premium was £194, with the cheapest (category 4) priced at £85.

It’s a similar tale at Lord’s this summer to watch England cricket in their Test series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka, with tickets costing £115 or £125 for the day. The cheapest ticket on Centre Court at Wimbledon this summer is £70 for the first two days (sat in the back six rows), rising to £275 for the women’s and men’s finals. A ground pass ticket to watch matches on the outside courts is £30.

In Formula One, a ticket to watch the first practice session at Silverstone was £50 in 2019, now it’s £169. The race itself costs £364.

Meanwhile, tickets for the Olympics athletics finals at Paris’ Stade de France this summer are €990 for the Category First seats and €690, €385, €195 or €85 for Category A-D tickets.

By comparison, in America, many sports operate “dynamic pricing models”, which work similarly to airlines and hotels.

This means prices fluctuate according to supply and demand, so you might be able to buy very cheap tickets to a low-profile fixture but if you want good seats to a big game you could end up spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars. This also means tickets can often be purchased on the day for most games.

In the National Basketball Association (NBA), for example, there are more tickets on sale to the public, fewer season tickets and more that go on the secondary market.

Prices vary according to factors such as the opponent, seat, location and the specific package used to purchase a ticket (eg, whether it’s a single game, part of a 10-game plan or a full 41-game plan) and whether the ticket was bought on Ticketmaster or a secondary market. For example, tickets to watch the Boston Celtics in the first round of the NBA play-offs are currently available to buy as a ‘verified resale ticket’ with a range between $139 and $2,490.

juventus stadium tour tickets

In fact, the draw to watch generational talents such as Caitlin Clark for the Iowa Hawkeyes meant tickets for the women’s championship this year cost twice as much as the men’s on average, reaching as high as $11,000.

Meanwhile, the average ticket price in the National Football League (NFL), which has the same dynamic pricing model, was $120 last year, according to Statista, and there’s been a steady rise in cost over the last 15 years.

A separate report, by Team Marketing, estimated it would cost $631 to take a family of four to a game and buy food, two souvenirs and a parking spot. Major League Baseball (MLB) tickets increased 3.5 per cent to an average of $37 in 2023. It costs $266 to take a family to a game.

So when matched up against other sports, the Premier League may appear competitively priced.

However, as costs continue to rise and more protests are staged, there’s a sense we’re reaching a crucial junction in what some people feel is a fight for the soul of football.
