Show Review: Amos Lee at Kennedy Center

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Amos Lee has always veered between the introspective and explosive, a singer-songwriter who brings elements of country, folk, R&B, soul and gospel into his emotional and observational lyrics and music.

On Tuesday, touring for the first time in three years behind his new album Dreamland , Lee brought all those elements to the fore in a two-hour, 21-song concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Backed by his five-piece band and the National Symphony Orchestra, Lee performed two cathartic sets that detailed his self-described “journey to discovery.”

Opening with hymn-like “Worry No More,” the second track on “Dreamland” and his biggest single in years, Lee set the tone for the evening from the start. He then moved into the funk of “Jesus,” one of five tracks from the evening off 2011’s “Mission Bell,” and then onto the lovely “All You Got is a Song” from 2018’s “My New Moon.”

Like many musicians, Amos Lee has said in interviews promoting Dreamland that he feels like “a different person” than he was before the pandemic. The songwriter turned inward during Covid, a period in which the Philadelphia-based songwriter lost family members and saw his mother diagnosed with cancer.

Now back on the road, he’s found his sense of humor. Noting that he was being “professional” during the first set but would have “some libations” at intermission, at one point, he gave a shout out to his father and bemoaned the fact that he’d gotten him “lousy seats.” And he noted, “Yes, I have a mullet. It’s been a long couple of years y’all.”

“Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight,” from Lee’s self-titled 2005 debut, segued into three songs with one-word titles — “Spirit,” “Colors” (his first hit), and “Walls” — before a quartet closed out the opening set. Noting his work with the Wounded Warrior Project and visits to injured soldiers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in nearby Bethesda, Lee dedicated the soul-searching “Out of the Cold” from “Mission Bell” and a cover of Paul Simon’s “American Tune” to our nation’s servicemen and women. The latter, which featured stirring work from the National Symphony, drew a standing ovation.

“This is the first song I ever did in public,” Lee said before ending the first set with Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come,” his second and final cover of the evening. “It says what it needs to say. I don’t need to talk about it.” Cooke’s Civil Rights-era classic has been covered by so many musicians that it veers into Leonard Cohen “Hallelujah” territory, but it was beautifully handled by Lee and the symphony.

The second set opened with two songs from Dreamland — “Seeing Ghosts” and the title track. Throughout the new album, Lee sings about his lifelong struggles with anxiety, isolation and past trauma, and you could almost see him wrestling with his emotions during these two tracks.

“Crooked” from “My New Moon” was followed by “Violin” and “Flower,” consecutive tracks from “Mission Bell.” (I was thrilled to hear so much from “Mission Bell,” my favorite Lee album, although “Dreamland” may soon overtake it.)

At this point, “Sweet Pea,” the jazzy New Orleans-style track from Lee’s sophomore album, 2006’s “Supply and Demand,” set the stage for another beautiful quartet of songs that closed out the evening.

“Black River,” in my view the strongest cut off Lee’s debut, brought with it a beautiful gospel feel. During the show, he admitted the first album was “a lot of trial-and-error stuff,” but all four songs he played from it on Tuesday are gems. It was followed by “Hang On, Hang On,” another prescient track given the pandemic, that first appeared on “My New Moon.”

“I appreciate you being part of this beautiful evening,” Lee told the audience before introducing his band and giving shout outs to each member. “I’m just feeling very grateful for this moment. Over the last couple of years, something I’ve gotten a lot more in touch with is being grateful for things.”

With that, Lee moved into the final two songs that in some ways bookend the first phase of his career to date — “Arms of a Woman” from his debut album and “Windows Are Rolled Down” from “Mission Bell.” The latter, which featured a lovely intro developed by National Symphony Orchestra conductor Andrew Lipke, brought the evening to a close.

It was, without question, a lovely evening, one that left you with hope and prompting you to look inward. Take, for example, “See the Light,” the next-to-last song of the opening set. It talks about lifting others and finding ways to connect when we’ve all felt so disconnected for so long.

“Even when I lose a winner Even when I fail to place When I fall off the map and disappear without a trace Even when I can’t breathe in And I’m falling out of line Everybody ’round me says that everything gonna be alright See the light See the light”

Concert Review: Amos Lee at Jacobs Pavilion

By Michael Gallucci on Mon, Jul 18, 2011 at 8:57 am

  • Lee: benchwarmer, folksinger

Given the company Amos Lee keeps (Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, and John Prine are recent tourmates), it seems natural that his current tour would put him alongside Grammy winner and folk-rock legend Lucinda Williams.

Saturday night at Jacobs Pavilion, the two shared a few favorites from early in their careers, but also some new material, including “Clear Blue Eyes” which Williams recorded with Lee for his new album.

Mission Bell , which debuted at No. 1 earlier this year, is Lee's most radio-friendly offering to date, but in spite of its immediate likability, it still manages to maintain all the inspiration and lyrical integrity of his previous records.

Tunes like “Cup of Sorrow” and “Windows are Rolled Down” got the biggest reactions from the crowd, but it was the singalong chorus of “Careless” that stole the show. “This is a ballad I wrote a few years ago after my best friend slept with my girlfriend,” Lee said just before the song began. The song’s lament, “I'm sure that we both still love her/And it's a shame we both lost her and in turn lost each other,” blasted through the venue with an unmistakable inflection that let everyone know he may still be more than a little pissed off about the whole thing.

Lee’s finely constructed folk-pop gems have just the right mix of catchy hooks and a rare sincerity that resonates with just about anyone with a pulse and a stereo. In his career, Lee has set the bar quite high for himself, and most nights, this one included, he clears it with room to spare. —Ryan Young

Review: Amos Lee with Lauren Talese at The Kennedy Center

American music at its best is alive and well as showcased by last night’s Amos Lee  concert at The Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall. The evening was off to a good start with an opening performance by Laurin Talese , who sang her heart out. As people slowly trickled in, Talese maintained a commanding stage presence, outfitted in a gorgeous silver-sequined gown that made her look regal.

After not too long, the stage dimmed and the band started playing “New Love,” soon after Lee walked onto the stage. His laid back sound and folk influences were there, with this slow jam he showcased that he is able to craft a sound of his own. The folk influences from his previous albums are there, but now with Spirit , his latest album, he is able to bring R&B, soul and even gospel influences to his sound. His voice, an instrument in its own right, blended into the 5-member band backing him up.

Lee has a stage presence is powerful through an honest delivery of heartfelt lyrics. Lee produced Spirit himself and you can tell and feel as an audience member that this album is meaningful at a personal level. His performance was broad enough that you can get a feeling for his 12-year career. The first half of the show had Lee wearing jeans, a black shirt and a vest that was a more composed.

“What’s up D.C.?” he talked to the crowd, who cheered back loudly. While most of the songs in his new album Spirit are about heartbreak and loneliness, the first part of the show had an upbeat vibe, with some of his earlier songs mixed in, including the folky “Supply and Demand,” which had the band come together at the center of the stage in an unplugged arrangement.

By the second half of the show, Lee showed up on stage wearing a black leather jacket and shades. The coolness was seething through and the set list favored the sexier of the songs in Lee’s repertoire, including “Baby I Want You,” which had Lee shaking his hips as the crowd went crazy.

51a6uv3xtfl-_ss500

The tone of the entire night was relaxed and laid back. Lee had plenty of chances to talk to the audience and shared some personal stories, not only about how much he loves D.C., but also about his career. Having started in bars, bookstores and anywhere he could play in Philly, you could feel the humility and gratitude of the current state of his career. A fearless performer, for sure, he communes with the audience, transmitting that sense of shared experience you can only get from live performances. With Lee, that feeling is an intimate one.

Although The Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall fits over 2,000 people, Lee made it feel cozy. The acoustics were so impeccable, I felt like Lee’s voice sounded better than in the recorded albums with that moving feeling you can only get from live experiences.

By the end of the show, he talked back to the audience, “Hope you’ve been able to feel it more than hear it.” And feeling we did, with a giving performance that had the band truly having fun on stage. He closed the concert with “Sweet Pea” in an extended version that had the entire concert hall calpping alongside. He returned for an encore, singing a cover version of “American Tune” by Paul Simon and finally closing with “Windows are Rolled Down.” A magical night that took us through folk, soul, R&B, some gospel influences and even rock through the wonderful vehicle that is Amos Lee’s voice.

Running Time: Approximately 90 minutes, with no intermission.

Amos Lee played for one-night-only on Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at The Kennedy Center’s  Concert Hall – 2700 F Street NW, in Washington, DC. For tickets to their upcoming events, go to their calendar . For tour dates and tickets visit Amos Lee’s website .

Amos Lee delivers 600 beers to St. Cecilia fans, Dave Bruzza goes solo at Wealthy Theatre

  • by John Sinkevics

Thursday night in Grand Rapids was special in more ways than one, highlighted by singer-songwriter Amos Lee’s amazing concert and post-show, beer-enhanced sing-along. Photos and video at Local Spins.

A guy and a guitar.

It might sound a bit cliché, but when those guys with guitars are also celebrated musicians and storytellers, they can create inviting evenings of music filled with memorable tales.

Two of those guys’ performances at different Grand Rapids venues on Thursday unfurled in raw, stripped-down fashion compared with their appearances just a few months ago as full-band affairs at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

Philadelphia soul, Americana and folk artist Amos Lee kicked off St. Cecilia Music Center’s 140th anniversary season with an acoustic blues-hued set that beguiled a capacity crowd of 600-plus fans — and ended up rewarding them with beer from Founders Brewing Co. and a post-show, sing-along performance of “Angel From Montgomery” by Lee on the stairwell in the St. Cecilia lobby.

It all started in between songs at St. Cecilia, when Lee — dressed casually in a flannel shirt, jeans and trucker’s cap — started chatting with fans, taking requests and joking amiably.

“I wish I had 600 beers right now. … We could make that happen,” he quipped at one point, to giggles and cheers from the audience. “Let’s see if we can get 600 beers delivered here. Honestly, I might do it as a thank you to the people. I want to buy the people a beer.”

So indeed, he did.

Ordering beer from Founders Brewing to satiate the thirsty crowd after the show, Lee then proceeded to extend his entertaining evening by leading a sing-along to the John Prine classic while on the lobby stairway to the delight of fans.

Ever congenial and complimentary of St. Cecilia’s historic Royce Auditorium — even encouraging the audience to attend the venue’s chamber music concerts — Lee showed off the hall’s pristine acoustics in Royce Auditorium during the concert by performing his first song, “Skipping Stone,” away from the microphone.

“It feels so good to sing in this place,” he acknowledged.

Rolling out songs such as “Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight,” “Supply and Demand,” “Seen It All Before” and “Bottom of the Barrel,” Lee’s soulful, resonant voice certainly soared in fetching fashion in that auditorium, with the singer even adding tender falsettos when the song demanded it.

The intimate evening of music on Thursday — which also had Lee inviting audience member Tom Sullivan on stage to play guitar with him — came in stark contrast to Lee’s performance with the Grand Rapids Symphony in July at Meijer Gardens .

ANOTHER GUY WITH A GUITAR AT WEALTHY: DAVE BRUZZA

Beer deliveries aside, more than 200 fans less than two miles away at Grand Rapids’ Wealthy Theatre were toasting guitarist Dave Bruzza of the Kalamazoo progressive bluegrass powerhouse Greensky Bluegrass, part of a solo tour that also takes him to Three Oaks’ Acorn Theater on Friday, with other weekend stops in Chicago and St. Louis.

amos lee tour review

“This is terrifying. I’m not usually alone up here,” said Bruzza, who like Lee had performed earlier in the year at Meijer Garden, a sold-out late-June show with Greensky Bluegrass that revved up more than 1,900 fans at the sold-out amphitheater.

And like Lee, Bruzza — a Michigan native who now resides in Denver — reveled in the acoustic gemütlichkeit of a cozy indoor venue, a refreshing way for fans to hear lyrics clearly, stripped of any accouterments and flash.

Playing original tunes (“Like Reflections”), Greensky Bluegrass songs (“Streetlight”) and covers (Lyle Lovett’s “If I Had a Boat”), Bruzza employed the same laid-back, blue-collar approach as Lee, telling stories behind the songs while interjecting amusing observations.

“Bless your vital organs,” he told the applauding crowd at one juncture. “Some people say ‘Bless your heart,’ but there’s so much more to it than that.”

Opening the evening was guitarist and Dobro whiz Mark Lavengood , who was accompanied by pal Loren Kranz . (Lavengood joins Billy Strings on stage at Van Andel Arena on Oct. 31.)

This is an artist at the top of his game. Between Amos and his incredibly talented and versatile band they wove their way through all different genres of music flawlessly. Warming up his vocal cords Lee crooned the first three songs with all the style and grace of legends. The set was peppered with songs from his first self-titled LP to his latest masterpiece.

And saving the best for last, he and his band launched into a couple of Grateful Dead tunes, Help on the Way into Franklin's Tower for their encore followed my more beautiful nuggets, finally ending up on his third encore solo to round out one of my favorite nights of music in a long time. Simply put, he was incredible!!!!

A dream came true. Amos, thank you. I missed you man. Don’t let you visit to Holland take that long.....

The setlist was great. Lots of old stuff, what suits me the most.

What irritated me was ‘the dutch desease’ people talking loudly. Even cracking bags of chips in my ear. Paradiso should prohibit that.

Mutlu was great too. Hope to hear him more often.

Don’t miss an unforgettable night of music as Amos Lee and his hometown Philadelphia Orchestra perform together for the first time ever on July 20 at the TD Pavilion at the Mann! Lee's signature blend of introspective folk, rock and soul will reach new heights in this collaboration with the Orchestra.

“Over the course of my life I’ve come to understand that music is my bridge to other people,” Amos Lee says. “I have no idea what the waters are like below that bridge—it might be lava for all I know—but music allows me to float over the whole thing and connect. To me that’s the whole point of why we do this: to give people something to listen to and be enveloped by the love of another human being, and just be reminded that humanity is beautiful.”

Indigo Girls and Amos Lee Announce North American Amphitheater Tour Dates for September 2024

Article contributed by gratefulweb | published on tuesday, february 6, 2024.

amos lee tour review

In an exciting announcement for fans of heartfelt storytelling and acoustic melodies, the Indigo Girls and Amos Lee are joining forces for a series of major North American amphitheater dates this September. This unique collaboration brings together two of the most respected acts in the singer-songwriter genre for a tour that promises to be an unforgettable experience. Tickets for this highly anticipated series of concerts go on sale this week.

The tour is set to begin on September 15 at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO, and will continue westward, making notable stops at Los Angeles’ Greek Theater, the Santa Barbara Bowl, and Oregon’s Edgefield Amphitheater. In a twist that adds to the excitement, the artists will rotate headlining duties each night, depending on the market.

This series of September dates comes as both artists carry significant momentum into 2024. Amos Lee’s latest album, Honeysuckle Switches: The Songs of Lucinda Williams , released in November, is a heartfelt tribute to his songwriting hero. Following the success of 2022’s Dreamland , Lee has been a fixture on national television and has enjoyed a successful year of touring. His recording of "Greenville," a reinterpretation of the Lucinda Williams/Emmylou Harris classic, showcases Lee’s deep connection to the material.

The Indigo Girls have also had a remarkable year, starting with a performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk and a premiere of their career-spanning documentary, It’s Only Life After All, at the Sundance Film Festival. The documentary, along with their music’s prominent feature in the upcoming film Glitter & Doom, and a resurgence in popularity thanks to their song “Closer to Fine” being featured in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, has brought a wave of new fans to the Indigo Girls.

The pairing of these two acts offers fans an exceptional opportunity to experience an evening of world-class singing and songwriting. The tour is not just a series of concerts but a celebration of music, storytelling, and the emotional power of song.

Lee Reimagines “Greenville” From Williams’ Game-Changing  Car Wheels On A Gravel Road  Here:  https://orcd.co/greenville

Amos Lee has long made “music to help listeners heal” (Salon), but after the release of his critically-lauded 2022 album  Dreamland  - he found himself diving back into the songs he personally leans on in trying times. Specifically, Lee revisited his “songwriting hero,” Lucinda Williams - the iconic musician he describes as “unapologetically sincere” and “a spiritual guide for me.” Now, Lee pays homage to Williams with a full album of covers from her iconic songbook -  Honeysuckle Switches (The Songs of Lucinda Williams)  - coming out on Record Store Black Friday (November 24) via Thirty Tigers. Williams has been a formative artist for Lee dating back to his teenage years - as an avid listener of WXPN in his native Philadelphia - and later he’d get the chance to collaborate with her on his Billboard chart-topping record  Mission Bell , while the pair have also shared many stages over the years.“She is the most genuine and kind person,” recalls Lee. “As someone who wasn't always readily available, her vulnerability opened my heart.”

Reckoning with his own loss and grief over the past year, Lee turned to the songs of his mentor as a source of healing - crafting  Honeysuckle Switches  as a way to thank Williams for getting him through life’s most difficult moments time and time again: “ She has this persistence and will in her perspective, she embraces the sadness but is never enveloped by it.”  Honeysuckle Switches  features Williams originals from her breakout  Sweet Old World  to the modern-era classic  Blessed . With the announcement of the album, Lee has also shared his soulful interpretation of “Greenville,” Williams’ collaboration with Emmylou Harris from her 1998 masterpiece  Car Wheels On A Gravel Road . “It’s a breakup song but there’s also a kindness to it,” says Lee of “Greenville.” “There’s a lot of love in the lyrics - we’ve all been difficult and impulsive, but we are not unlovable or unsalvageable.”

Pre-order  Honeysuckle Switches (The Songs Of Lucinda Williams)  here before its release for Record Store Day Black Friday:  https://orcd.co/honeysuckleswitches

Honeysuckle Switches  follows a banner 2022 for Lee - which saw him perform on stages from Red Rocks to The Ryman, while bringing his latest album  Dreamland  to national television audiences on Good Morning America, The Kelly Clarkson Show, Rachael Ray and The Late Late Show with James Corden. Teaming with Record Store Day for the album’s release marks a full-circle moment for Lee, who discovered his lifelong musical passion while working at the independent Papa Jazz Record Shoppe in Columbia, South Carolina. Alongside the release of  Honeysuckle Switches , he’ll also continue to tour through the end of 2023 - with a full list of announced dates at  https://www.amoslee.com/tour .

Amos Lee - Look for the Silver Lining [Lyric Video]

The My Ideal Tour—A Tribute to Chet Baker Sings Live

With special guest caliko (ac sapphire + kendall lujan).

Amos Lee has unveiled   My Ideal (A Tribute To Chet Baker Sings)  , a 16-song collection that simultaneously pays tribute to Lee's musical hero, reflects on the Billboard chart-topper's deep jazz roots, shines a light on his Philadelphia music community, and toasts an exciting year of returning to the road and releasing new music.  Chet Baker Sings   is a record that Amos has always loved, but now holds even deeper meaning as a source of light in the darkest days of the pandemic - where his daily routine included waking up, meditating and playing the 1954 jazz epic front-to-back. During what he describes as a "revelatory period" of diving deep into the nuances of the record, "seeing what it felt like to walk around in Chet Baker's shoes," Lee knew the next step was to take his deep reverence and curiosity into the recording studio. Accompanied by a captivating trio of jazz players from his hometown of Philadelphia - David Streim (piano/trumpet), Madison Rast (bass) and Anwar Marshall (drums) - Lee powerfully brings  My Ideal  to life.

The new album finds Lee bringing his own celebrated vocal work to the music of Chet Baker, taking inspiration from the originals without attempting to reproduce or duplicate his hero. Studying the breath work and pitch control behind Baker's legendary output proved to be an exercise that Lee says "changed everything," adding: "the deeper I got inside the music, the more I fell in love with everything about it.” On  My Ideal , listeners are reminded of a voice naturally suited for the jazz genre, and of Lee's earliest work on Blue Note Records. But  My Ideal   does not dwell in the past, neither Lee's nor Baker's, containing many of the same beloved elements that made 2022 such a banner year for Amos. Among those highs are shows at legendary venues like Red Rocks, The Ryman and The Kennedy Center, television performances from The Late Late Show to Good Morning America and the release of his critically-lauded new album of originals  Dreamland .
