Islands To Visit in Lakshadweep

Agatti island.

Agatti Island will be your first stop as you land at Lakshadweep . The island boasts of having some of the finest beaches and offers tons of water sports activities.  The beaches are clean and the water is deep blue teeming with the most colorful and diverse underwater world.

Where To Stay:

Local guesthouses and a few private-run resorts are the only options.

Do check the latest update on the official tourism site.

Agatti Island

Bangaram Island

Surrounded by a shallow lagoon this island is one of the most beautiful islands of Lakshadweep. It boasts world-class corals and rich marine life. From shipwreck snorkeling sites to hidden beaches with hermit crabs, the bluest of the blue ocean to a lagoon full of sea turtles, Bangaram fits the bill perfectly for a perfect beach experience.

Where To Stay:

The only option is to stay at the Bangaram Island resort which is run by SPORTS ( Lakshadweep Tourism ).

Travel Time

  •  From Agatti: 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the boat.

Bangaram Island

Pareli 1 & 2

These tiny islands surrounded by the shallow lagoon on one side and the deep sea on the other can be covered by foot in 15-30 minutes. The shallow lagoon is home to numerous sea turtles whereas the deep sea is home to sharks and stingrays.

The island is full of ( hungry 😉 ) hermit crabs, and sea turtles.

No options. These islands can be visited as day trips from Bangaram, Agatti or Thinnakara

  • From Agatti: 30 -75 min depending on the boat
  • From Bangaram: 20-40 min depending on the boat
  • From Thinnakara: 15 min

Lakshadweep Itinerary

A bite-sized island midst a shallow lagoon makes Thinnakara an ideal place for vacation. It is isolated and just a few cottages are dotted on the shores. It is a perfect escape for those who want to be away from the rush of life. You can snorkel, sail out in your kayak, play beach volleyball, and relax in a hammock doing nothing.

Even at times, it might happen you are the only one with the resort staff on the island.

Cottages on the Island

  • From Agatti: 20-40 min depending on the boat.

Thinnakara

Kadamat Island

Kadmat is one of the most stunning islands in the archipelago. You will find dolphins cleaving through the clear blue waters, sea turtles all around might come to greet you on your way to Kadmat from Agatti.

The phenomenal sweep of talcum-powder sand with dramatic waves breaking across the bay is an everyday thing here. Apart from the scenic vista, the island also offers various water sports activities like diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paragliding to name a few. Some of the best diving spots can be found here.

Kadmat Island Resort – You have an option of NonAC tents and AC rooms to choose from. However, the Non-AC tents are a little far from the main resort.

Kadamt

Minicoy Island

Minicoy Island is a beautiful coral island dotted in the Arabian Sea full of dense coconut groves, a long stretch of white powdery beaches, and an amazing marine world. The island is distinct from the rest of the islands in terms of culture, lifestyle, and language. You can find a lot of influence from Maldivian and South Indian culture on this island.

There are three tourist cottages and one 20-bed tourist home.

Minicoy Island

Kalpeni Island

Kalpeni is famed for its bewitching landscape with the small islets Tilakkam & Pitti and an uninhabited island on the north called Cheriyam. You can walk to Cheriyam island from Kalpeni during low tides but make sure you are not barefoot.

The islands of Kalpeni were reshaped because of a huge storm in the 1800s and the formation of the beautiful corals is attributed to this storm. It has the largest lagoons among all the islands of Lakshadweep. These lagoons are quite shallow and are perfect for all sorts of water sports activities. You can also explore the Sait Moinuddin mosque while on the island.

Koomel Beach Resort is the only resort for tourists and it is run by SPORTS (Lakshadweep Tourism).

Kalpeni

Kavaratti Island

It is the capital of Lakshadweep and the most developed of all the islands. Apart from sun-drenched white sandy beaches, and amazing coral reefs, you can also explore the aquarium and museum on the island.

Ujra Mosque constructed by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim in the 17th century is one of the most prominent attractions on the island and draws a lot of tourists. The island also offers a plethora of water sports activities like kayaking, snorkeling, parasailing, and scuba diving at a very reasonable rate.

I am planning a trip to lakshdweep in january, I will be alone and do not want to spend much on stay. Please suggest whether i can get some cheap stay after reaching there, or prebooking/e-booking is required? Please note I am a solo traveller and I generally focus on sightseeing and local cuisines and culture. I can manage with some cheap accomodation.

December 9, 2016 at 7:12 pm

Hi Prashant, you need a permit to travel to Lakshadweep. This permit is arranged by SPORTS or any other travel agent which takes care of your lodging (the details of travel agents are on the SPORTS Lakshadweep website). We would highly recommend a pre-booking. For more details, you can check the website of SPORTS Lakshadweep.

' src=

November 27, 2022 at 4:41 pm

I want to plan my own trip and not go for any package. Will Sports help me get permit if I only book my lodgings through them?

Thanks for detailed tour guide. I really like to visit this place. Carry some nostalgic memories. My father was working in Minicoy long time back when I was a toddler. So I wan to see the place again taking with my mother. Can you please suggest a 2-3 days (max) itinerary covering Minicoy. I want to see Minicoy.

December 3, 2016 at 10:30 am

Glad you liked our post, Minicoy is near Kalpeni & Kavaratti so either you can plan to visit one of the islands and visit Minicoy on a day trip or you could check weekend cruise packages from Cochin.. hope that helps

What is the approximate total cost for a week trip. I want to mainly know how much we would spend on daily stays at each island and the no of ppl on sharing basis.

' src=

January 21, 2017 at 9:41 am

Awesome post! It’s so confusing the information on google about these islands! Just wondering – is Minicoy an inhabited island? Just because you mention that there are 3 guest houses owned by locals there. Also if we were to book a few days through SPORT and stay at their accomodation, could we extend our stay and stay at local accomodation somewhere? Do we need to apply to SPORTs to be able to stay in local accomodation? I just assume local places would be cheaper?

' src=

February 17, 2017 at 7:39 am

did you book the whole trip through SPORTS ?

July 16, 2017 at 1:44 pm

Not the whole trip only the accommodation and transfer between islands … food is inclusive

' src=

July 26, 2017 at 4:50 pm

hey..Thanks for the informative post.. Though I have a query.. you have given quite a detailed information of the islands while SPORTS website is mostly about about the cruise packages and they dont cover all the island either. Did you guys make your own itinerary and visited the place via flight. Would it be possible for you to give an idea about the ititnerary you followed.

1. Beach activities and water sports

The sapphire lagoons, colourful corals, mesmerising sunsets and pristine beaches will not leave you disappointed. Indulge in water sport activities like scuba diving or simply sit and relax on the beach. You also also witness some of the folk dance events including the Lava Dance, Kolkali Dance and Parichakali Dance.

2. Try local delicacies

The local delicacies of Lakshadweep have a major Kerala influence. Try their scrumptious traditional dishes including octopus fry, appams and tuna. Cooked in base of coconut and spices, the local dishes will leave you licking your fingers and wanting for more!

For vegetarians, the cuisine is heavy on fish and meat, but you will find parota (a flaky flatbread), rice, vegetable curry or chutney influenced with local flavours. Some of the must visits eateries to try the local delicacies include Agatti Island Beaches Resort, Akshaya Mess and Food Court.

3. Shopping

Before leaving, you must take something that will remind you of the traditional handicraft made from coral shells. The beach themed souvenirs such as bracelets, mirrors, armlets, lamps, ashtrays and more are all made from shells.

A quick glance of places to visit

Things to keep in mind while planning your itinerary

While planning your itinerary, you have to remember that the boats between Agatti and Kavaratti/Kadmat leave only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Boats to Thinnakara and Bangaram from Agatti ply every day, so you can include them any time. If you are planning to do day trips to Kadmat and Kavaratti, remember that they are two and half hours each way from Agatti.

If you are finding hard to plan the trip on your own, I suggest to book through the Lakshadweep tourism website or an approved agent. Forget places which need you to leave India, and instead explore what we are blessed with!

Sit under the clear blue skies on white sandy beaches and return home with a renewed energy for 2024!

My journey led me to the enchanting Agatti Island in Lakshadweep, and the experience was nothing short of magical. I was immediately captivated by the pristine beauty that unfolded before me. The beaches of Agatti are adorned with soft white sand and surrounded with turquoise waters.

Having personally explored Agatti, I was captivated by its geography, especially the enchanting lagoon that surrounds the island. Picture a lagoon as a shallow, clear-blue playground nestled between the land and the deeper sea, shielded by natural barriers like coral reefs or sandbars. Agatti’s lagoon is like a magical, transparent pool where marine life thrives, creating a stunning underwater world.

Now, let’s talk about corals – these are living organisms that build intricate structures underwater. They come together to form coral reefs, which are like bustling cities beneath the sea. The coral reefs around Agatti are like underwater gardens, bursting with a riot of colors and teeming with fish and other sea creatures. It’s like stepping into a vibrant, underwater wonderland.

Agatti, though a small island, is a haven of tranquility and safety, especially for families with kids. One of the notable features that add to its charm is the absence of rough waves, creating a gentle and serene environment along its shores. This makes the island a particularly safe and enjoyable destination for children, allowing them to play in the shallows with ease.

During my visit, I discovered a myriad of activities tailored for all ages. The calm waters made it perfect for family-friendly adventures, and I took full advantage of the offerings. A glass-bottom boat ride provided a captivating glimpse into the underwater world without getting wet, making it an ideal choice for those wanting to explore the vibrant marine life without diving in.

For a bit of adrenaline, the banana boat ride was an absolute thrill. The island’s tranquil waters transformed into a playground of laughter and excitement as we rode the waves. Snorkeling, another highlight of my Agatti escapade, offered a more immersive experience into the underwater wonders. From vibrant corals to colorful fish, every dip was a journey into an aquatic realm.

Also, one of the question I had before visiting Agatti was whether veg food is available on the island.

Yes, vegetarian food options are available on Agatti Island. While the cuisine in Lakshadweep, including Agatti, is prominently influenced by seafood due to its coastal location, you will find vegetarian dishes as well.

I discovered small stalls offered a variety of vegetarian dishes on the beach, including traditional Indian fare such as rice and dal, veg biryani, and comforting veg 2-minute noodles. From the refreshing taste of coconut water to the crunch of banana chips, these stalls provided a taste of local flavors.

Floating in the clear blue waters of Lakshadweep, snorkeling was an amazing experience for me. I hoped to see a turtle, but unfortunately, I couldn’t spot one. Still, watching the colorful fish and exploring the lively coral gardens was like entering a whole new world beneath the waves.

The water was so clear that every movement of the fish seemed like a dance, and the ocean’s gentle rhythm added to the magic of the moment.

Also, my 9-year-old boy also loved this experience. so can say it is safe for kids.

Also, you do not need to know swimming to try this experience.

"One Hundred Thousand Islands"

Lakshadweep tourism.

Formerly known as Laccadive Islands, Lakshadweep translates to 'one hundred thousand islands' in Malayalam. Home to a few of the most beautiful and exotic islands and beaches of India, Lakshadweep lies 400km off the southwest coast of the Arabian Sea. The smallest union territory of India has only 36 islands having a total area of 32 sq. kilometres. It's made up of 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks out of which ten Islands are inhabited.

Lakshadweep is typically accessed from Kochi (Kerala) and a permit is required to visit Lakshadweep for all tourists (including Indians). After permit, foreigners are permitted to just visit Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat Islands. Permits can be obtained from Kochi itself. Permits are exempted to government officials, armed force members, and their families who are either working or visiting these islands. Additionally, embarking on the Lakshadweep Samudram Cruise aboard MV Kavaratti is a maritime adventure like no other. This 5 day cruise takes you Kavaratti, Minicoy and Kalpeni islands. Another such extraordinary 5-day voyage is from Mumbai to Lakshadweep on the Cordelia Cruise. Perhaps the charm of Lakshadweep islands lies in their remoteness. Far off the beaten track, they attract no hordes of merrymakers to their shores. The islands, though all equally mystical and beautiful, each offers a unique blend of tourist spots. Some islands have been promoted for diving and water sports, still, others have been developed so that people enjoy the charm of relaxation.

Must Know Before You Travel to Lakshadweep

In accordance with the Rules of Restriction on Entry and Residence for Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands established in 1967, individuals who are not native to these islands are required to acquire a permit in the prescribed form from the competent authority to enter and reside there. Exceptions to this rule include government officials, armed force members, and their families who are either working or visiting these islands. Here's more information on Permits for Lakshadweep .

A Practical Travel Guide to India’s Coral Paradise, Lakshadweep

In March 2022, I embarked on a five-day, solo summer journey to paradise, packaged as the smallest union territory of India – Lakshadweep. To be honest, it felt like I died and went to heaven for those five days, if heaven were sunny, sandy and endlessly blue. Not only are the coral islands visually and soulfully breathtaking – crystal clear waters, powdery beaches, unbelievable marine life and the most welcoming people – but for the entire duration of my travel to Lakshadweep, I was without a care in the world, even when I lost my boarding pass, got bit by a fish and saw my return flight cancelled! Heaven, amirite?

While I will always rave about my travel adventures in Lakshadweep, there’s a small catch. Planning a getaway to Lakshadweep can get tricky – not because there’s a lack of information – it’s the opposite – but because there are quite a few moving parts involved. So, here’s everything I know about these ‘ hundred thousand islands ‘ in what I hope is a brutally honest and super practical guide to arm you with all you need to head to this coral paradise, with or without company.

About Lakshadweep

Although Lakshadweep is Sanskrit and Malayalam for a hundred thousand islands, the IRL count is a teeny fraction of this number. Twelve atolls, three reefs and five submerged banks house thirty-six islands to make up one of the most picturesque tropical island systems in the world. It’s more lagoon than land, with the former covering 4,200 km², while the latter totals up to a mere 32 km². Smog capital New Delhi , in comparison, is nearly 43 km².

Lakshadweep travel guide

Expect tropical weather, with an average temperature of 27° C to 32° C, the coolest months being December and January, and the hottest being April and May. Between June and October, the South West Monsoon is in full swing.

Coastal climate means humid, sunny, and warm weather. Mornings and evenings can be pleasant and breezy, while afternoons can get bright and sweltering. Agatti is somehow the hottest and most humid of all the islands.

Locals, Culture, and Language

The people of Lakshadweep are probably the kindest, friendliest and most helpful lot I’ve come across. Their willingness to not only strike a conversation but also readily offer a helping hand is a boon to many a traveller, especially when solo.

Religion – Most are descendants of migrants from India’s Malabar Coast, who arrived before the 7th century CE and converted to Islam sometime in the 7th century. The people are warm, with unity and across religions that is absolutely beautiful to observe.

Language – Jesiri or Dweep Bhasha – a musical amalgamation of Malayalam, Tamil and Arabic, written in Malayalam script – is commonly spoken here, as is Malayalam. Locals also speak some Hindi and little English, which are what travellers defer to. If you’re even slightly fluent in Malayalam, communicating here is easy peasy. In Minicoy, locals mostly speak Mahl .

Culture – You will observe typical Indian coastal culture with strong Islamic influences in all the islands except Minicoy, where the culture is closer to that of the Maldives due to its proximity to the island group.

Food and Alcohol

Two words to describe the food in Lakshadweep? Comforting and delicious.

lakshadweep tour quora

The staple cuisine resembles that of Kerala – rice with sambhar or dal, avial , idli or dosa with chutney, stews, coconut-based curries and of course, seafood. Tuna is available almost anywhere, and most travel accommodations in Lakshadweep will feature either tuna or some fish dish for lunch and dinner. That said, there are many vegetarian- and vegan-friendly options to enjoy. Resorts offer a basic continental and Indian spread for breakfast.

For someone with coastal blood coursing through their veins (Mangalorean, at your service), all meals felt like I was eating the food my mum makes – never a bad thing!

Expecting plush restaurants when you travel to Lakshadweep will leave you disappointed. You can find small cafes and eateries on local-inhabited islands. Typically, your accommodation will provide three meals and refreshments – enough to keep you satiated.

Since a majority of Lakshadweep’s population practices Islam, alcohol sale and consumption are prohibited, except in Bangaram, although it’s no party central!

Lakshadweep Travel Planning

Here’s all you need to know about the islands you can visit, the best time to travel to Lakshadweep, how to get there, and more.

lakshadweep tour quora

The Islands

Of the 36 islands, 10 are inhabited, of which only a handful are open to travellers. There are plans underway to open more islands and islets to tourism.

  • Inhabited and open to tourists – Agatti, Kadmat , Kalpeni , Kavaratti, Minicoy
  • Uninhabited and open to tourists – Bangaram, Pitti , Thinnakara
  • Inhabited and not open to tourists yet – Amini, Androth, Bitra, Chetlat, Kiltan

Only Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat are open to non-Indian travellers.

Best time to travel to Lakshadweep

October to April is the best time to travel to Lakshadweep – perfect beach weather. The peak tourist season is in winter, particularly in December, so expect hotel and resort tariffs to increase.

Best time to travel to Lakshadweep

During monsoon, ship-based tourism is closed, although ships may continue operating for locals. Flights and helicopters may operate year-round, making accessibility to Agatti and Bangaram possible. While the rains give a splash of emerald and enhance the beauty of the lagoons, travel during monsoons is not advised.

lakshadweep tour quora

I visited Lakshadweep towards the end of March, and it turned out to be a good time to travel – great beach weather without throngs of tourists.

Getting to Lakshadweep

There are only two ways in and out of Lakshadweep – air and sea.

lakshadweep tour quora

Air – Presently, the only airport is in Agatti, and only one flight – Air India/Star Alliance ATR 72600 – operates in and out of the island, from Kochi. Travellers typically fly into Kochi, and then Agatti. The flight takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach Agatti. Check-in baggage allowance is limited to 15 kg per person.

Best to book your flights at least 45 days in advance, since seats fill up pretty fast.

I travelled from Bangalore, so my Air India flight followed the Bangalore -> Mysore -> Kochi -> Agatti route and took 4.5 hours.

lakshadweep tour quora

If travelling from a city much further than Kochi (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai), book connecting flights via Air India itself. My return flight from Agatti to Bangalore was cancelled, which wasn’t an issue for me because I didn’t need a connecting flight. But those who did and had booked connecting flights on other carriers like Vistara had to rebook at an additional cost.

Ship – Seven passenger ships ply between Kochi and Lakshadweep. The travel time is anywhere between 14 to 18 hours, depending on the destination island.

Lakshadweep travel guide

At the time of my travels, only two ships were in operation.

Island hopping – Inter-island transport is by sea, with vessel sizes depending on the island’s distance. For instance, the vessel from Agatti to Kavaratti and back is a large carrier, while the one to Bangaram is a speed boat.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Travel within islands – On some islands, you can cover the distance from one end to the other on foot. In Agatti and Kavaratti, autos are available for hire. You may also find cycles and mopeds for rent.

If only I could visit them all, I would!

While all islands may seem similar at the surface, each offers something unique and works for different budgets. I couldn’t travel to Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy this time, so I stayed in Agatti, Kavaratti and Bangaram, and took a half-day trip to Thinnakara; here is my take on each.

Lakshadweep travel guide

But first, it’s important to know that most of Lakshadweep’s tourism is managed by SPORTS.

What is SPORTS?

The Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports, or SPORTS, was formed by the Lakshadweep Administration in 1982 to promote environmentally conscious tourism and to function as the hospitality wing of the Lakshadweep Administration.

SPORTS operates resorts in Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti and Minicoy, tents in Thinnakara, and ship package tours across Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, and Minicoy. The Society also operates State Guest Houses and Dak Bungalows of the Administration.

lakshadweep tour quora

Whether you book directly or through a travel agent, permits, transfers and most accommodation (except in Agatti) will be via SPORTS.

Air travel-wise, Agatti is your gateway into Lakshadweep since the island houses the Lakshadweep airport. From here, travellers are transferred to the islands of Bangaram and Kavaratti. A good number of travellers don’t stay here, choosing to head to other islands instead.

Lakshadweep travel guide

This doesn’t mean Agatti has nothing to offer. The turquoise waters of the lagoon are home to turtles, diverse corals and fishes in spectacular colours. Kayaking, sailing, snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing and water skiing await all those who choose to stay.

Lakshadweep travel guide

If you’re looking for a slow and serene tropical getaway with a flavour of local island life, Agatti is the island for you. It’s also ideal for those short on time or those who need to stick to a tight budget since accommodation rates start at INR 5,000 per night. If you choose to stay at Agatti, spend at least 2 days and 2 nights here, if not more.

lakshadweep tour quora

Accommodation in Agatti – Agatti has no SPORTS-managed accommodation for tourists. SPORTS only operates a Union Territory Guest House, which is meant for government officials and contractors, and as a transit rest-stop for travellers flying into Agatti and then travelling to other islands.

Privately managed accommodations – from resorts to homestays – can be found in Agatti.

You can add Agatti to your island-hopping itinerary as well, choosing to spend at least a day here before, in between or after your time on other islands.

The poster child of Lakshadweep, the tourist-only island of Bangaram is perfect for beach bums, with its jewelled waters and nearly snow-white sand. Save the staff of the Bangaram Island Resort and their families, you won’t find locals here.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Hushed days, balmy evenings and star-speckled nights welcome all who stay at Bangaram. From snorkelling at the coral gardens and the shipwreck, and scuba diving, to crossing the lagoon during low tide to get to a private sandbank, your days will dreamily pass by with a blissful ‘vacay-mode-on’ vibe. The lone resort offers a recreation room with a lounge area, some games, and a decently stocked bar. And if you’re lucky, you may catch bioluminescence as you walk along the shore after dinner!

Lakshadweep travel guide

While Bangaram is perfect for all types of travellers, the demographic skews toward honeymooners and families with small children. Still, I had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of solo travellers, friend groups, girls-only gaggles, and empty nesters.

lakshadweep tour quora

Bangaram is a 45-minute speed boat journey from Agatti.

  • For overnight stay at the resort, you will be transferred via a speedboat from Agatti. Spend at least 2 days and 1 night here.
  • Since it’s close to Agatti, you can plan a day trip to Bangaram from Agatti, and return via the same boat. This works well for budget travellers since accommodation prices at Bangaram are pretty steep.

Accommodation in Bangaram – Bangaram Island Resort is the only accommodation available on the island. The resort has beach-facing single and double air-conditioned cottages.

Lakshadweep travel guide

You can book your stay here either through the SPORTS website or the Bangaram Island Resort website.

The capital of Lakshadweep is a 2.5-hour sea journey from Agatti and is bustling with life – human, animal and marine. Kavaratti offers an ambient mix of seaside activities and a true feeling of Lakshadweep’s local life and culture. The scuba diving experience with the Kavaratti PADI-certified dive centre is phenomenal! In fact, it is quite affordable to dive here as compared to other places in India and abroad. Add to this the relatively cheaper stay as compared to Bangaram, it’s a steal to get PADI certified and spend a few days at Kavaratti.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Kavaratti is a haven for travellers who are looking to know more about Lakshadweep’s history and culture. You can spend a day exploring the island from the western jetty all the way to the eastern jetty where the larger ships such as MV Lagoons dock.

lakshadweep tour quora

You can explore the island in less than half a day, on an auto or even a cycle. Observe the lighthouse from a distance (no entry inside, sadly), visit the Marine Museum, and pass chicken neck – the narrowest point of the island where you can see the lagoon side and the sea side together, walk to the site of an old beached ship, and chat with locals about their days on the island over a cup of coffee.

lakshadweep tour quora

To experience the best of Kavaratti, spend at least 2 days and 2 nights here.

Accommodation in Kavaratti – Tourist stays are on the lagoon side of the island, close to the Western jetty. Expect busy views of the lagoon, with transit vessels and fishing boats docking in and out.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Paradise Island Hut Resort is the SPORTS accommodation available in Kavaratti. 6 air-conditioned double rooms are available.

There are also private homestay options available.

A teardrop-shaped uninhabited island merely 20 minutes away from Bangaram, Thinnakara previously had tents for tourists to spend a few nights in, which were removed, thanks to COVID. They could return in the near future.

lakshadweep tour quora

Still, a day trip from Bangaram is possible, with turtles giving you company as your boat makes its way across transparent waters that show off massive coral gardens. At Thinnakara, you can walk the length and breadth of the island and then cut through the middle to visit the lone house whose inhabitants serve sweet elaneer (tender coconut water), fresh toddy and even some mouth-watering coconut jaggery.

lakshadweep tour quora

Accommodation in Thinnakara – Only non-air-conditioned tents are available here. At the time of my travels, there were no tents on the island.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy

Visiting the islands I missed out on is definitely in my plans for the near future, so until then, this is all I have on Kadmat, Kalpeni and Minicoy.

Kadmat Island Beach Resort has 36 sea-facing air-conditioned rooms and a few standard non-a/c rooms.

Minicoy Island Resort is a 20-bedded stay on the southern side of the island, close to the lighthouse. Each cottage has an open-to-sky bathroom with coral-laid flooring.

Besides these, private stays are available.

Packages and Other Accommodation

Besides the above, you can travel to Lakshadweep through package tours from SPORTS, or private travel agency packages.

Lakshadweep travel guide

Packages under SPORTS

These packages are a no-brainer for hassle-free travel to Lakshadweep since nearly everything except flights – accommodation, permits, transit fees, food and refreshments – is covered. Water sports may require an additional payment over the package rates.

Details and bookings for SPORTS packages can be found/done here –

Packages through Private Agencies

Private packages from reputed travel agencies include cruises, on-island stays, water activities and sightseeing. Often, travel agents will make your stay arrangements through SPORTS-managed accommodations, except in Agatti.

While it’s tempting to plan a DIY trip, I strongly recommend having it managed by a private operator. They work closely with SPORTS to coordinate bookings, permits, fees, and transits. I went via Smile India , who had previously managed my family trips to Rajasthan and Bali.

Permits and Paperwork

Entry into Lakshadweep for tourists is strictly regulated, and a permit is required, for both Indian and foreign nationals.

To obtain a permit, keep the following handy –

lakshadweep tour quora

  • Itinerary – dates of travel, mode of transport, name of the package if applicable, a break-down of the time spent at each island, accommodation
  • Name, age, gender, nationality
  • Police clearance certificate (PCC). Contact your local police station and state that you require a PCC for Lakshadweep. Processing could take 10-20 days
  • Identification documents (Aadhar card, etc.), and three passport-sized photographs
  • Foreign nationals would have to submit copies of their passport and a valid Indian visa in addition to the above

As of March 2022, online applications for entry permits can be submitted.

Processing time – this depends on the type of stay chosen.

  • If you opt for a SPORTS package or a SPORTS resort, the processing time is up to 2 working days after submission of all documents and full payment. Permits for those who’ve booked staying packages will be issued within 7 days of the journey.
  • If you opt for a private hotel, resort or homestay, the processing time is 15- 20 working days after submission of all documents and full payment.

Booking a SPORTS package or SPORTS resort accommodation via a travel agent will minimise the documents required for the permit (no PCC required) and reduce the time taken to process the application.

What to Wear and Pack

For the most part, pack everything you usually would if you were travelling to any other beach destination. Still, note these important points.

lakshadweep tour quora

  • Cotton shirts, dresses, shorts and pants in light colours. The more covered you are, the better because the sun isn’t always your friend. Also, it’s best to dress modestly
  • At least one swimsuit or a pair of swimming trunks. Bikinis are not allowed, except in Bangaram and Thinnakara
  • A cap or a wide-brimmed hat
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Flip-flops or beach sandals. I also carried a pair of aqua shoes to prevent cuts from stepping on corals
  • While the resorts provide towels, I carried my own quick-dry towel, which doubled as a bathing suit cover-up and as a blanket for evenings on the beach

Personal Care –

  • Carry sunscreen, and reapply every 2 to 3 hours. I packed my trusted Earth Rhythm SPF 50 PA ++++ for the face and Biotique SPF 75 UVA/UVB Lotion for the body
  • The resorts provide basic soap, so carry your own toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpaste, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion
  • A first-aid kit with antiseptic liquid/cream, cotton, band-aids, bandages and pills is always good to have, even though resorts may have a kit of their own. I found a dearth of supplies when I was bitten by a fish during a dive in Kavaratti
  • Wet wipes and tissues for mid-journey refreshing

Wallet and documents –

  • Boarding pass, entry permit, accommodation and itinerary documents, ID proof, COVID vaccination proof, and passport with valid visa (for non-Indian nationals)
  • Cash in Indian rupees

lakshadweep tour quora

  • A universal travel adapter for foreign nationals
  • Smartphone, charger, earphones
  • A portable charger, if you will be using your smartphone heavily for photography.
  • A waterproof phone pouch to protect your phone from water
  • A DSLR or a point-and-shoot camera, and a GoPro with a hand grip for underwater photography. Else the dive centres will share their footage with you.
  • I carried my Kindle along, for reading by the beach – a blessing for solo travellers.

Refreshments –

  • Snacks for transits and day trips.
  • Lakshadweep follows a no-plastic bottle policy. Your stay will provide drinking water in glass bottles. Carry your own water bottle and refill it.

Lakshadweep Travel Budgeting

Lakshadweep is at a considerable distance from mainland India. This alone drives up costs since supplies need to come from Mangalore or Kochi. The prices are also kept on the higher side to regulate the number of tourists that visit Lakshadweep – it’s why accommodation in Bangaram is relatively expensive. If you’re looking at Lakshadweep as a shoe-string budget destination, you might want to rethink your plans.

Lakshadweep travel guide

That said, a well-rounded trip to Lakshadweep within a sensible budget can definitely be planned.

Note: All costs are averages of estimates for one person, and are based on own expenses and available online data. Actual costs may be higher than indicated.

Here are my hacks to save some big bucks when you travel to Lakshadweep!

  • Planning in advance is key to getting accommodation and the best fares. Use Skyscanner to track dips in airfares.
  • If you’re in South India, take a bus or train to Kochi and then fly from Kochi to Agatti. You can also spend a night in Kochi and explore the beautiful Fort Kochi area.

Suggested Read: My guide to making the best of a day or two in Kochi, under a tight budget .

  • SPORTS packages offer the best of everything, for every budget. Choose one based on the islands you’d like to visit.
  • Avoid staying in Bangaram if you’re on a budget. You can opt for a day trip to Bangaram and return to Agatti, instead of spending the night at Bangaram.
  • Avoid travel to Lakshadweep in December, to save 10% on tariffs.
  • Travelling in even numbers is cheaper since double room costs are halved, which then cost less than the single room tariff.
  • Getting PADI certified in Kavaratti is value-for-money compared to other locations, both within and outside India.

My Lakshadweep Itinerary and Cost

Since this was my first trip post the COVID-19 pandemic, my travel to Lakshadweep was a no-expense-spared, revenge-travel solo journey, one that I absolutely do not regret. 🙂 My original itinerary was only for Minicoy, but I guess the universe had other plans.

lakshadweep tour quora

My Lakshadweep travel plan included 2 days and 2 nights at Kavaratti, 2 days and 2 nights at Bangaram, and 2 days and 1 night in Agatti since my return flight got cancelled.

  • Day 1 – Depart Bangalore via flight and land in Agatti. Sea transfer from Agatti to Kavaratti
  • Day 2 – In Kavaratti. Activities included scuba diving, an auto tour of Kavaratti
  • Day 3 – Kavaratti to Agatti by boat. Sea transfer from Agatti to Bangaram. Activities in Bangaram included day-trip to Thinnakara
  • Day 4 – In Bangaram. Activities included snorkelling at the coral garden and the shipwreck site, a walk to the sandbank to catch the sunset
  • Day 5 – Bangaram to Agatti by boat. Spend a night in Agatti due to flight cancellation. Activity included walking around Agatti.
  • Day 6 – Depart Agatti via flight, arrive in Bangalore

I spent INR 109,093 all-inclusive – even snacks, shopping and tips. Here’s a break-up of my costs.

What you need to know before you travel to Lakshadweep

Here’s some important information that you need to know before you jet-set-go to Lakshadweep,

  • Network & Internet – Only Airtel and BSNL networks work here, with BSNL being stronger. Bangaram and Kavaratti resorts provide free WiFi that’s meh.
  • Cash – Don’t rely on digital payments. Carry cash for emergencies, water activities, bar tabs, snacks, and tips.
  • Accommodation – No luxuries and swimming pools here. A comfortable stay with clean rooms, basic amenities, and ever-helpful staff is guaranteed.
  • SPORTS coordinator – You will be assigned a dedicated SPORTS coordinator who will help with transits and any emergencies.
  • Eco-consciousness – Avoid littering and carry your own reusable water bottle. No plastic bottled water here.
  • Tap water in Bangaram – Smells strongly of sulphur, Tap water is treated with a sulphur compound, and while completely safe to use for all bathroom needs, it will tarnish metal that’s not real gold. Drinking water has no odour.
  • Banned items – Taking back coconuts, corals, shells and vinegar is prohibited.

Frequently Asked Questions

While its romantic ambience, hushed locales and picturesque beaches certainly aid this notion, Lakshadweep isn’t exclusively for honeymooners any more than Goa is only for teenagers who like to party. There’s something for everyone here – solo travellers, couples, families, friend groups, culture-buffs, and adventure seekers.

Yes, Lakshadweep is family-friendly. Most families with young children prefer to stay in Bangaram because of the ample open space by the beach and the slightly superior quality of stay. Nevertheless, other islands are also suitable for a wholesome family trip.

Yes, it’s safe for solo travellers. The islands have a negligible crime rate, and the people are so wonderful!. Since almost everything is arranged by SPORTS and your travel agent, you will have nothing to worry about, and can safely explore the islands alone. The only ask is to respect the local culture and customs.

Yes, Lakshadweep is extremely safe for women, and I can’t think of a safer place for a woman to travel to. I travelled alone and had an unbelievably safe and comfortable experience throughout.

Bikinis and swimming/sunbathing in the nude aren’t allowed on the inhabited islands of Lakshadweep. You can wear a bikini in Bangaram and Thinnakara.

Being a Muslim-majority location, alcohol possession, consumption and sale is prohibited. There are talks of this changing though. Alcohol is available in Bangaram.

You can definitely plan a budget trip to Lakshadweep, as long as the budget is sensible. Don’t expect a trip to Lakshadweep under INR 20,000. Follow my budget tips shared above to make the best use of your bucks.

Lakshadweep offers phenomenal scuba diving experiences across Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, Kavaratti and Minicoy. A PADI Discover Scuba Dive costs just under INR 3,600 per dive, while a PADI Open Water Diver certification costs around INR 22,000. If you’re looking to get PADI certified, Agatti, Kavaratti and Minicoy are some of the best places to do so.

Fresh tuna pickles and tuna powder from Kavaratti or Agatti – yum! In Thinnakara, you can purchase a 1 kg jar of freshly made coconut jaggery, which is delightful!

If your flight is cancelled, get to Agatti, and ask your SPORTS coordinator to help you look for accommodation for the night. Star Alliance’s flight cancellation policy entitles you to an accommodation reimbursement of INR 1,500 per day because Lakshadweep falls within Kochi’s jurisdiction. While you can find accommodation for INR 1,500 per day in Kochi, that’s a no-go in Lakshadweep. Agatti has options from INR 5,000 – your cheapest and best bet.

There’s some unrest in the islands due to developmental plans, talks of privatization, policies to ban beef and lift the alcohol ban, and much more. I will soon write a post talking about all of these points.

Lakshadweep is an island destination that’s waiting to receive its fair share of attention, which it often loses to the likes of Andaman & Nicobar and the Maldives. Filled with marvels at every step of your journey, ones that somehow elevate your spirit yet calm your soul at the same time, a wonderful adventure awaits all who travel to Lakshadweep. This much I promise you. 🙂

Lakshadweep Itinerary

The Ultimate Lakshadweep Itinerary: A Complete Guide For Beginners

Are you trying to find the best Lakshadweep itinerary? The very name Lakshadweep translates to “a hundred thousand islands.” Besides that, Lakshadweep is a group of islands off the coast of Kerala with miles of perfect, uncrowded beaches, beautiful lagoons, and turquoise-blue water teeming with marine life.

However, if you plan to visit this piece of paradise, look no further. In this post, we have shared our Lakshadweep itinerary, how to reach this beautiful place, places to stay here, and things to do there.

About Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is a group of 36 islands with exotic beaches, lush green landscapes, and diverse marine life, which means ‘a hundred thousand islands’ in Malayalam and Sanskrit.

Moreover, Lakshadweep is India’s smallest Union Territory, with 36 islands covering an area of 32 sq km. The capital and principal town is Kavaratti. In fact, the islands, which sit in the Arabian Sea, are 220-440 km away from Kerala’s Kochi city. Likewise, Lakshadweep has a unique, relaxed atmosphere and offers natural landscapes, sandy beaches, and diverse flora and fauna. Thus, create a Lakshadweep itinerary that suits your requirements.

There is good connectivity to the islands via flights from Kochi. Not to mention, Agatti-Kavaratti helicopter transfers are available year-round. Temperatures in Lakshadweep range from 27°C to 32°C on average due to its tropical climate. On the other hand, ship-based tourism remains off-limits during monsoons.

Making Plans to Travel to Lakshadweep

The time and month of your trip will determine the itinerary you choose for Lakshadweep. What is the duration of your desired stay in the Lakshadweep Islands? Our trip lasted ten days because we wanted to stay for at least one week. However, the majority of tourists would rather spend five to seven days in Lakshadweep, India. Out of one lakh islands, only a small number are accessible to you.

Tourism has little impact on the vast majority of the islands. Agatti, Bangaram, Minicoy, Thinnkarra, Kavaratti, and Kaadmat are a few of the islands that are accessible for visits. The majority of the islands have spotty internet service; it feels like a distant dream here. Therefore, keep that in mind before you planning a trip to Lakshadweep . These days, there are two ways to see the Lakshadweep Islands: with a cruise package or on a personalized schedule. If you choose the cruise package, you will spend the entire trip on a cruise with the option to disembark at a few locations.

On your cruise package, you can also choose to participate in some water sports. After all, you will find it easy to visit all the larger and smaller islands and stay on the properties with a customized Lakshadweep itinerary.

In addition, there are plenty of connecting flights from there to Aggati, which is the entry point to Lakshadweep. The main air entry point into the archipelago is Agatti Airport, which makes it easy to visit the stunning coral atolls and turquoise lagoons. Hence, this is the guide to the Lakshadweep itinerary that will help you get there.

Islands to Visit Lakshadweep

Agatti islands.

One of Lakshadweep’s most exquisite lagoons is accessible in Agatti. The airport sits on this island. The view of the island’s airstrip is amazing as one approaches the aircraft for a landing. Agatti is one of the easiest islands in Lakshadweep to reach, due to flights operated by Indian Airlines. As you are aware, we also provide inexpensive flight tickets Canada to India , providing travelers with an easy and affordable way to experience the breathtaking beauty of Lakshadweep.

Bangaram Islands

Bangaram is a small island resembling a teardrop that is close to Agatti and Kavaratti. Visitors have a great chance to relax from the stresses and strains of contemporary life at this island’s tourist resort. At the same time, the same lagoon surrounds the two small islands near Bangaram, Thinnakara, and Parali. The phosphorescent plankton that washes ashore on the coral sands at night transforms the beach into a magical blue glow. In fact, visitors to this resort have the option of arriving by helicopter or boat from Agatti. Being the only uninhabited island resort in Lakshadweep has its own charm. In short, Bangaram is a popular destination for affluent, discriminating travelers and is firmly on the international tourism map.

Thinnakara Islands

Situated directly across from Bangaram Island, Thinnakara Island shares the large lagoon and coralline banks with Bangaram Island; the lagoon’s actual area is 125.21 square km. It lies on the lagoon’s north-south border, between Parali (i) and Parali (ii).

The airport is 8 kilometers northeast of Agatti on the tiny teardrop-shaped island of Thinnakara. The view includes stunning lagoons, serene seashores, sun-kissed sand, the allure of swaying palms, and amazing marine life. Here, everything works together to create a colorful kaleidoscope reminiscent of an archipelago paradise. In a nutshell, the beach is completely mesmerizing at night when phosphorescent plankton washes ashore on the coral sands and gives it a blue glow.

Since Thinnakara Island has opened to foreign visitors, those wishing to experience the breathtaking beauty of Lakshadweep on a tight budget can now take advantage of our cheap Flight Bookings to India . Nonetheless, Thinnakara offers a constant array of exciting activities in addition to well-managed tent accommodations along the beach. Kadmat Islands

Measuring 9.3 kilometers (5.8 mi) in length, the island has a lagoon with a width of 1.5 kilometers (0.93 mi) covering an area of 25 square kilometers (9.7 sq mi). The ecological feature of the island is a coral reef with sea grass and marine turtles that nestle here. The Ministry of Environment and Forests (India) has notified the island as a marine protected area to ensure the conservation of the island’s animals, plants, other types of organisms, and other resources.

Amini Islands

If you are planning a Lakshadweep island trip , make sure to include the Amini Islands on your itinerary. Situated between Kavaratti Island in the South and Kadmat Island in the North, Amini Island is 407 km (220 nautical miles) from Kochi. This island is oval, measuring 2.70 km in length and 1.20 km at its widest point. Additionally, its latitude and longitude are 11° 06′ to 11° 08′ N and 72° 42′ to 72° 45′ E, respectively. Its land area is 2.60 sq km and its lagoon area is 1.50 sq km. With a depression in the middle, this oval-shaped island is set two to three meters above mean sea level.

In fact, the building also features corals and sandstone. This region’s expert craftspeople are well-known for their tortoiseshell and coconut-based walking sticks. It is well known for its stone engravers in addition to its rich folk song tradition. The Arabic word “Amin,” which means faithful,” is the source of the island’s name.

We had five days in hand and wanted to visit the uninhabited islands – Thinnakara and Bangaram. We decided on these two based on the proximity to Agatti airport, frequent ferry and the beautiful coral reef. You could pick any of the islands and trust us you won’t be disappointed!

Landing at Agatti airport

Day 1 – Flight from Chennai to Kochi and then Kochi to Agatti.

The flight from Cochin to Agatti is like a sneak-peak to what your holiday is going to be! The landing is absolutely spectacular. Tiny islands surrounded by azure blue sea for miles. We met the SPORTS Lakhadweep tourism in-charge. A car was ready to pick us up from the airport and drop to the ferry terminal. I have never seen a ferry terminal as gorgeous as this! I was excited to say the least! I was trying to soak it all in….i was in PARADISE!

A short ferry ride with locals and fellow passengers, we reached Thinnakara. I was floored by the different colors of  blue , ranging from a to bright teal,  turquoise to a deep, royal blue in the water. The boat ride was comfortable, the breeze soothing, salt in the air and sand in my hair. I wondered what took me so long to visit this Paradise.

Day 1, 2 and 3 at Thinnakara.

The first impression on reaching Thinnakara was WOW! A tiny island surrounded by azure blue water and  picture-perfect white sand beaches, providing you a real Robinson Crusoe experience. But, let us warn you, the accommodation is extremely basic tent styled with no frills and  the tap water has a pungent sulfur odor, having said that the views are mesmerizing.

There are enough activities going on here to keep people of all ages busy like kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing etc. Once the sun sets, the sky is lit by a million of stars. Lie on the beach and gaze at the sky! Life is felt in silence, in that moment when what you see before you can no longer be conveyed with words…

We highly recommend s hip wreck site snorkeling and scuba diving.  I would definitely come back to do a PADI course.

Rewards of scuba diving.

We decided to skip the island hopping by boat and instead walk to the neighboring island, Parali I and II when the tide was low. It was a beautiful experience, the receded sea bed looked like a vast desert, and we saw a lot of marine life, like sea anemones, crabs, and sea cucumber all along the way.  We kept a close check on the time and tides, to be sure we were back to Thinnakara before the high tide sets in! As romantic as it sounds, we didn’t want to be stuck on a deserted island!

Parali I and II on either side.

Sea cucumber and hermit crabs to give us company on our long walks!

lakshadweep tour quora

We saw something interesting on our walk to Parali I, some fishermen were hunting for some worms. On asking them, they mentioned, they used it as a bait to catch fishes!

People who know us, know about our love for sunsets. We’ll walk an extra mile to catch a sunset. Well, in Thinnakra we could just sit back on the beach and watch the sun go down!

lakshadweep tour quora

The food is simple but delicious! If you’re a non-vegetarian you’ll love the fresh catch of the day.  I used to look forward to our  candle light dinners on the beach,  sand between our toes , the star- lit sky above and the sound of sound waves. Bliss!

Day 4 & 5 – Ferry from Thinnakara to Bangaram island.(10 minutes ferry ride). Two nights at Bangaram

Our beautiful cottage and sit out

lakshadweep tour quora

We relaxed on most of the days in Bangaram, made some amazing friends, walked around the island, and tried the local brew – Mira which is made from coconut flowers being tapped.

lakshadweep tour quora

When you walk around the island and you can find fishermen up the tree, tapping and collecting Mira. Mira is milky and tastes sweet. Toddy is an alcoholic variant which is fermented for around 24 – 48 hours and is essentially sour and pungent.

Apart from toddy we tasted a local variant of peanut butter, made with jaggery  and happily packed two bottles to take back home! There are no souvenir shops on both the islands – shopping enthusiasts i understand it will be difficult for you 😉

We celebrated New year eve at Bangaram and it was a cultural and gastronomic affair.

lakshadweep tour quora

Day 6-  Ferry from Bangaram to Agatti airport jetty. Transfers to the Airport for our flight back to Cochin.

During our five day stay we engaged ourselves in various activities like –

  • Island hopping
  • Turtle watch

COST IN RUPEES

The tariff includes accommodation and all three meals.Apart from this we spent another ten thousand rupees that included snorkeling trips, scuba diving, turtle watch and New Year gala dinner.

Flight tickets from Cochin to agatti roughly cost 9000 INR.

THINGS TO PACK

  • Sunglasses, hats and scarves
  • Snorkeling set – Though you can hire it, we always pack our own!
  • Snacks- food available between meals

Lakshadweep, the hidden jewel of the Arabian Sea, beckons with its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and vibrant marine life. If you’re wondering how to embark on this tropical adventure, worry not! Here’s a simple guide on reaching Lakshadweep by road and sea.

Lakshadweep by Flight

Lakshadweep is well-connected by air, with Agatti Airport being the primary gateway. Regular flights operate from Kochi, making it a convenient option for travelers. Flights from Kochi are operated by Indian Airlines. There are flights from Kochi to most airports in India and overseas. There is an airstrip on Agatti Island only. Boats to Kavaratti and Kadmat are available from Agatti from October to May. During the monsoon season, Agatti to Kavaratti can be traveled by helicopter, provided that a helicopter is available.

It takes one hour and twenty minutes to fly from Kochi (Cochin) to Agatti. Foreign visitors must first go to Kochi and then take a further trip to Lakshadweep. Only those holding a “tourist visa” from abroad are allowed access to the Lakshadweep islands.

Lakshadweep by Ship

For those seeking a more adventurous journey, maritime routes are available. Ships ply between Kochi and Lakshadweep, offering a unique and scenic voyage. Although the sea journey takes longer, it provides an opportunity to soak in the beauty of the Arabian Sea.

Between Cochin and the Lakshadweep islands, seven-passenger ships sail MV Kavaratti, MV Arabian Sea, MV Lakshadweep Sea, MV Lagoon, MV Corals, MV Amindivi, and MV Minicoy. Depending on the island picked for the trip, the passage takes 14 to 18 hours. The ships have three different accommodation classes: push back/bunk class with A/C seats, A/C Second Class with four berth cabins, and A/C First Class with two-berth cabins.

Basic amenities including a lounge, snack bars, cafeterias, and movie shows are available on these ships. Additionally, there are medical facilities with a doctor on call.

Some Kochi to Lakshadweep cruises takes passengers to some of the region’s most well-known islands. Minicoy, Kavaratti, Kalpeni, and Kadmat are examples of this. For Kochi to Lakshadweep ship price check this website .

Lakshadweep holiday - Thinnakara

How to plan your own Lakshadweep itinerary

lakshadweep tour quora

Here’s how to plan your own Lakshadweep itinerary, based on what we learned during our visit. Remember, though, that planning your own trip to these beautiful islands takes time, effort and patience.

Some time ago, we decided we would take a holiday in the Lakshadweep islands for our anniversary. But we soon found out that visiting Lakshadweep was not going to be as easy as we thought. There’s not too much information available online if you don’t want to go through an agent, and whatever is there is quite confusing. So here’s what we learned while we planned our trip, so you know how to plan your own Lakshadweep itinerary.

In this post

Video guide

Before you get into the details, you should take a look at this quick video guide if you’re wondering how to visit Lakshadweep. It’ll give you an idea of what to expect, and help you figure out the details better. You can also download my Lakshadweep quick reference planner so you can have the basic details at your fingertips.

IQ’s top tips on how to plan your own Lakshadweep itinerary

General tips.

Note: Lakshadweep is ecologically extremely sensitive! Tourism, overfishing, shipping and climate change all have an impact on its marine ecosystems, so leave only your footprints behind! For some context, watch this talk by marine biologist Dr. Rohan Arthur of the Nature Conservation Foundation on the steady decline of coral reefs in Lakshadweep over the last 25 years. (Tip : If you’re pressed for time, skip the first 15 minutes)

  • Lakshadweep is expensive, and facilities are basic, so if you’re looking for a budget holiday or luxurious accommodation, you might be disappointed. All meals are included, though.
  • You should expect your Lakshadweep travel cost to be a minimum of Rs. 25,000 per person for a two-day trip if you’re flying in, and Rs. 15,000 per person if you’re taking a cruise package.
  • Start planning at least three months in advance. That’s because it’ll take you time to figure out what you want to do, and the process of finalizing your schedule with the tourism department will be painfully slow.
  • Try and book your airplane tickets before planning the other details of your trip; once you finally get your schedule done and paid for, tickets might not be available any more. The tourism booking office won’t warn you about this, though.
  • Also, don’t expect quick response times or insightful information from the booking office. It’s faster to send them a preferred schedule yourself, rather than asking them to suggest something.
  • All accommodation and travel in Lakshadweep is 10% more expensive in December, so budgeting can be confusing if your schedule overlaps with other months.
  • The booking office sometimes make mistakes with dates and pricing, so it’s best to cross-check the schedule and quotation you get from them.
  • Make sure you get your entry permits before you start your Lakshadweep trip; a couple we met there got stuck at the airport because their agent hadn’t sent them their permits.

Vegetarian tips

  • Even though the local cuisine is heavy on meat and fish (especially tuna), you’ll find that the meals served at the resorts have more than enough vegetarian options.
  • If you decide to check out the local eateries instead, I recommend the parota (a flaky flatbread), possibly paired with local scrambled egg, vegetable curry or chutney. Or all three.

Sustainability tips

  • Never leave litter anywhere on the island; it ends up in the ocean, destroying many marine ecosystems. Always put trash in a waste bin or, even better, take it back with you.
  • Sunscreen is really bad for corals when it washes into the water, so try and wear a dive shirt or dark tee shirt instead. You could also try the local trick of rubbing lots of coconut oil into your skin.
  • Ask if the resort can give you purified rainwater to drink instead of bottled water. Because that’s what the locals drink, and it’s just as good.

About Lakshadweep: The basics

Lakshadweep (literally, ‘a hundred thousand islands’) is a group of tiny coral islands off the south-west coast of India. These islands are relatively unexplored, and offer breathtaking beaches, spectacular diving and a bit of interesting culture.

There are two ways of reaching Lakshadweep: you can either fly in or take a cruise. When flying in (like we did), the usual schedule involves staying on one of the islands for a night or two while you enjoy the beach, the reefs and the local culture (if any), and then moving on to the next island. Traveling between islands usually involves a long boat ride, so day trips are rare.

If you prefer cruises, on the other hand, there are different ones that start from the mainland and go to various islands, depending on the package. You will probably spend most nights on board your ship, though.

We decided to fly in instead of taking a cruise, so this post will focus on helping you plan a fly-in Lakshadweep trip.

Places to visit in Lakshadweep

Only a few islands in Lakshadweep are currently open to tourism: Bangaram , Thinnakara , Kadmat , Kavaratti , Kalpeni and Minicoy . Because Kalpeni and Minicoy are so far away, you can usually only visit them as part of a cruise package.

Agatti island has the only airport in the Lakshadweep islands, but the last I checked, there wasn’t any tourist accommodation there.

Here’s a map will give you an idea of how far apart these islands actually are.

Bangaram and Thinnakara

Bangaram island is the most popular island among international tourists (maybe because it’s the only island that allows alcohol to be served – but that doesn’t mean it’s actually available). Because of this, it’s also the most expensive. The only accommodation is cottages of different sizes, which have air coolers instead of air-conditioners (though they aren’t usually needed). Bangaram has an ‘island paradise’ feel to it, with lovely sunset views and a magical dinner buffet on the beach.

In contrast, nearby Thinnakara is a tiny, mostly-uninhabited island with hardly any tourists, and offers complete privacy in its basic tents on the beach.

Another popular island is Kadmat, known for its quiet, pristine beaches and its once-beautiful corals. The corals have been recently been affected by a rise in ocean temperatures, though, causing them to largely die out. Kadmat lies far to the north of Agatti, so the ferry ride is quite long.

Beach side resort at Kadmat Island

Kavaratti is the capital island of Lakshadweep, and is probably the best place to see the local culture. Unfortunately, it lies far to the south of Agatti and takes a while to get there. It’s also a popular stop for cruises, so it can get crowded during the day. One of the more popular things to do on Kavaratti is to climb the lighthouse and see the sunset from the top.

Kalpeni is one of the more difficult islands for tourists to access, so most people visit the island as part of a cruise. Still, it has some interesting features, like the surreal coral boulders strewn across its eastern and south-eastern shores. They say that a violent storm in 1847 broke off large parts of nearby reefs and washed pieces ashore here.

Rocky outcrops on Kalpeni island

Minicoy is the southern-most island in Lakshadweep. Because of this, it actually has more in common with the Maldives in terms of language and culture that with the rest of Lakshadweep. Sadly, visiting Minicoy is difficult because of the long sea journey involved, and tourists need to take one of the cruise packages if they want to visit the island.

There are plans afoot to build an airport there, though. Once that happens, visiting the island will be far easier that it is now.

Permits for visitors

Tourism in Lakshadweep is tightly regulated, so you’ll need a permit for each island you plan to visit, regardless of whether you’re an Indian or international tourist. Your itinerary needs to be decided and paid for in advance, and everything is expensive (at least by Indian standards). The permits are issued by the tourism department once you’ve paid.

When to plan your Lakshadweep trip

The best time to visit is between November and February, when the weather is nice and the water is calm. During other times of the year, the sea is a bit rough. And during the rains from May to September, the weather has been called ‘miserable’ by a friend who does marine biology research there.

How to get to Lakshadweep

You can get to Lakshadweep either by taking a flight from Kochi to Agatti, or by taking a cruise ship from the mainland to whichever islands your package includes. You can book your flight yourself (if you’re planning your own itinerary, that is), or through an agent. If you’re taking a cruise, you’ll either have to book through the Lakshadweep tourism webite , or, again, through an agent.

There’s only a single small Air India flight each day, from Kochi to Agatti, and so seats begin filling up months in advance. Because we initially planned to travel over the new year—the busiest time of the year there—we couldn’t get tickets, despite trying in October. It might be a good idea to book your tickets a few months in advance before figuring out your detailed itinerary.

The badly laid-out Lakshadweep tourism site will give you some idea of what to expect, and also contains a list of tour packages. It also has a list of authorized travel agents that might be able to help you book your trip.

Planning and booking your Lakshadweep itinerary

Once you’ve decided (a) to fly in, and (b) not to use one of the authorized agents, you’ll have to schedule your own itinerary with the tourism department, including booking your accommodation. You can either call them or email them (we decided go the email route, using their official booking email ID: [email protected] ).

Be warned, though: their response times are typical of a government-run department, and they don’t really volunteer any information unless pushed and prodded. So it’s best if you try and figure out your own itinerary (keep reading for more on how to do this) and just send it to them to give you a cost estimate. Once you get a quotation from them, you’ll have to transfer the entire amount to them in advance before they send you your schedule confirmation and permits.

If you’re flying in, your plans will depend on whether you want to travel to islands north of Agatti, or to the south. There’s no accommodation on Agatti itself, though, as far as we could figure out.

Runway on Agatti island

Accommodation, and travel between islands

If you’ve decided to fly in, you’ll have to stay at the government-run SPORTS (Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports) resorts on each island. That’s because private resorts, hotels and homestays are not permitted to run in Lakshadweep. But if you’re taking a cruise, you’ll probably spend most nights on your ship.

The information below is applicable only if you’re flying in. Bangaram and Thinnakara aren’t part of the cruise packages, so I’ve included them here, but Kalpeni and Minicoy aren’t accessible except by cruise, so I’ve left them out.

Bangaram lies a little to the north of Agatti, and accommodation here is limited to cottages that are priced at Rs. 15,000 per night, including all meals. They aren’t air-conditioned, but have an air cooler or ‘desert’ cooler instead. The ferry from Agatti to Bangaram takes 30 minutes and costs Rs. 4,000 per person for a two-way journey.

Thinnakara island is to the north of Agatti, right next to Bangaram, and offers tents on the beach that are covered by thatched roofs. They also have a tiny ‘green toilet’ attached, and are priced at Rs. 10,000 per night, including all meals. The boat from Agatti takes around 45 minutes, and costs Rs. 5,000 per person for a two-way journey. But if you’re already on Bangaram, it’ll cost Rs. 1,000 to Thinnakara and back.

Covered tents on Thinnakara island - How to plan your Lakshadweep itinerary

Kadmat island is far to the north of Agatti, and has rooms that range from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 11,000, all meals included. It’s important to note that Kadmat is two-and-a-half hours by boat from Agatti, with boats running there and back only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Because of this, you need to stay there a minimum of two nights (three if it’s over the weekend). The boat from Agatti costs Rs. 8,000 per person to get there and back.

We didn’t visit, so we don’t have photographs of what this one looks like, sadly.

Kavaratti island lies far to the south of Agatti, and the only accommodation is air-conditioned suites priced at Rs. 9,000, with all meals included. The boat ride from Agatti to Kavaratti is two-and-a-half hours and costs Rs. 8,000 per person for a two-way journey. Again, the boat runs only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so you need to stay there a minimum of two nights.

Tips on travelling between the islands during your Lakshadweep itinerary

When you’re planning your itinerary, remember that boats between Agatti (the airport island) and Kavaratti (far south) or Kadmat (far north) ply only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. If one of these islands is the first or last one you plan to visit, plan to fly in or out on one of these days.

It might actually be a good idea visit them during the first part of your holiday, since visiting any of the other islands from there will involve getting back to Agatti first. Boats to Thinnakara and Bangaram from Agatti ply every day, so you can include them any time.

Lastly, keep island position and boat journey time in mind: Kadmat and Kavaratti are two-and-a-half hours away from Agatti in opposite directions, so travelling from Kadmat to Kavaratti or vice versa will take a minimum of five hours.

Would you please share total tour cost..We are planning for October.

Hi Anik. The costs depend completely on how long you’re going for and which islands you’re visiting. I’ve got indicative costs on my blog posts that you can use for calculation.

Thank you author for such a nice blog. Keep it up.

Thanks! Glad you liked it! 😊

Hi, Do we have to apply for a permit separately even when we book the rooms directly by sending an email to [email protected] ? How did you get the permit?

Nope, they take care of the permit too. That’s how we got ours.

Superb Blog. It is very informative. Thanks for taking the effort in writing it.

Thanks very much! I’m glad you found it useful 😊

I am planning for my honeymoon in December 2021, I am still not 100% sure if I should plan or not due to this tight regulations. Inter-island travel is much costly. Everyone says that only air india runs the flight, but on google you are seeing much options.

Overall, travel to Lakshadweep is expensive and not very luxurious. But if you’re looking for a unique experience, then I think it’s worth it. Air India was the only airline flying to Lakshadweep when I last updated the post. It might be different now.

Cheers a very comprehensive article. I haven’t heard about this beach paradise before!

Thanks, Vinn! It’s not too well-known in India either. And tourism is pretty tightly regulated.

Wow, I’ve never even heard of these islands but this has made me want to visit! Not the typical scenes you think of when you think of India! Thanks for sharing, this is such a useful post too.

Thanks, Clazz! Glad you liked it. India has so many different things to see. I keep telling people one lifetime isn’t enough to see everything India has to offer 😁

Haha – same with so many countries, too! I definitely need to make it over there some time.

I’ve got a blog post for first-time visitors for when you do 😁

See, this is an amazing blog post – one that completely opens our eyes to a new place with really tempting shots! Great work.

Thanks a lot! Hope it’ll tempt you to visit 😀

Thank you for the tips.

It was really helpful. Thanks a ton

So glad you found it useful! Happy travels!

Is the second half of december a good time to visit? we are planning our honeymoon.

Hi! December is great, but it’s the peak season, so more expensive than otherwise. I suggest starting the planning and booking process soon, because there’s only one flight, and that gets sold out quickly.

Thanks much IQ!

My pleasure. All the best for your travels!

What’s your experience, did you went?

Excellent. Thank you.

Glad you found it useful!

superb and very informative writeup.

Thanks a lot. Glad you found it useful!

Lakshadweep Travel Guide

Glistening blue waters, incredible islands, virgin lagoons, exotic marine life, and clean beaches make Lakshadweep a slice of heaven on earth. Lakshadweep is surrounded by the waters of the Arabian Sea and is set at a distance of 450 kilometers (approx.) from the coast of Kerala. The cluster of 36 islands for sure makes Lakshadweep a tropical paradise. Comprising 10 inhabited islands, 5 submerged banks, 12 atolls, and 3 reefs, Lakshadweep is the smallest Indian Union Territory. Literally meaning one lakh islands, Lakshadweep is much of a lesser-explored gem of the country. Offering laidback vibes, this archipelago is a jewel for tourists who are looking forward to calming their senses while disconnecting from the mainstream crowd. Lakshadweep attracts travel enthusiasts with its underwater activities. Its colorful coral colonies are best admired when you go scuba diving and snorkeling. This picturesque island group is not just about the underwater world but also entices vacationers with on-land attractions. Among the island group, only 10 are inhabited and among these only Kavaratti, Kadmat, Minicoy, Kalpeni, Agatti, and Bangaram are open for tourists. This famous tourist destination has been untouched by much human intervention. Thus, its scenic beauty is unparalleled. If you are looking forward to delight in the quintessential charm of nature’s excellence, this island group beckons you. The capital city of Lakshadweep is Kavaratti Island. In addition to nature's bounty, the capital city opens its doors to bring you to museums, aquariums, several sports, and other attractions. The Ujra mosque is the most visited among other mosques here. Moreover, the islands within the vicinity of Lakshadweep are very well connected with local sea transportation. Including boats, jetties, ferries, and even helicopters. There are no private island resorts in Lakshadweep and neither does it have overwater floating bungalows. Every island here has its own set of attractions to keep you on your toes and delighted to the core. Resting off the coast of Kerala, this place can be reached easily by air routes or waterways. As Southwest monsoon brings showers here, you will have the best vacation during the winter and spring months. Your holiday delight is enhanced with a stay at a beach resort here, imparting you the superior essence of comfortable accommodation. Enjoy the best of both worlds at Lakshadweep. Indulge in tranquility, nature’s best, and adrenaline-rich activities at this island territory. For ardent holidaymakers like you, we present a complete travel guide to Lakshadweep Islands. Come, the tropical paradise of India Lakshadweep is calling!

Why Visit Lakshadweep?

Lakshadweep is one of the best hubs for snorkeling in India. Here you can dive into the crystal clear water and be submerged into the treasures of the ocean. Lakshadweep is unspoiled, untouched, and unexplored by mass tourism and thus, you will feel revitalized away from the monotonous crowd. This archipelago has crystal clear waters, excellent marine life, and beautiful coral reefs that will leave you spellbound. Submerging into the fresh and blue waters, all the inhabited islands of Lakshadweep provide tourists to indulge in thrilling water sports like scuba diving and snorkeling. Imagine your foot is drenched with soft white sand, and towering palm trees have swing rope attached against the blue sky. You can even witness the galaxies of unique fishes like lionfish. Sea cucumbers, and butterflyfish along with dolphins, and turtles.  If you are looking for an unaffordable underwater experience in India without splashing the cash on international islands, bookmark Lakshadweep.

How to Reach Lakshadweep

It is not a brainer that if you want to reach Lakshadweep, you have only two options. One is air travel while the second one is ship/waterway. There are no railway stations in Lakshadweep since it is a tropical paradise wrapped within the Arabian Sea. Furthermore, road connectivity to Lakshadweep from any destination is impossible. But there are two main airports in Lakshadweep which are well connected with Cochin International Airport only. The first one is on Agatti Island while the second one is on Bangaram Island. Indian Airlines operated flights could be used for transportation. The average travel time between Cochin to Lakshadweep is around 3 hours (approx.). Another great option to reach Lakshadweep is via ship/waterway! One needs to take any 1 of the 7 ships from Kochi to reach Lakshadweep. The shipping service operates overnight and takes around 12-14 hours (approx.). The passenger ship to Lakshadweep has a doctor onboard service, arrangements for snacks, and more!

How to Get Around Lakshadweep

You are not alone if you are searching for the answer to how to get around Lakshadweep. The not-so-common way of getting around Lakshadweep is renting a bicycle. It would be a good leg muscle workout for you if you want to explore the island you are staying on like a local. Moreover, walking tours within Lakshadweep are another big hit! It goes without saying that sea transportation in Lakshadweep, like ferries and boats, is the most suitable form of getting around Lakshadweep from one island to another. Did we mention that a few islands in Lakshadweep provide tourists the chance to hire and ride the hatchback, SUV, Sedan, and Hatchback?

Best Time to Visit Lakshadweep

Like every other destination on the planet, you can reach Lakshadweep throughout the year. Thanks to its operational resorts that remain open for welcoming tourists. But the opening of the resorts is not the only convincing reason as outdoor activities might get hampered during the monsoon. So the best time to visit Lakshadweep is September to February. During this season, tourism in Lakshadweep gets to boom annually. You will meet like-minded travelers, mainly couples, in the winter. Moreover, the winter season marks every possibility to indulge in watersports without the fear of the strong tides and waves. Although, summers from May to May are considered another good season to visit Lakshadweep with less humidity in comparison to monsoon which marks its presence from June till August.

Best Lakshadweep Tour Packages in 2024

More about lakshadweep trip package -.

There is more to the enchanting Lakshadweep archipelago than a few small dots on the Indian map. A Lakshadweep tour package is the best way to explore the pristine white beaches, lagoons and coral reefs that the region is known for. The total area of the 35 islands is only 32 square kilometres with the coral-enclosed lagoons encompassing another 700 square kilometres. However, the extended sea zone is more than 7,00,000 square kilometres, which is almost the size of the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh combined together.

Booking Lakshadweep tour packages is a great way to dive deeper into the natural wonders of the region, which is home to 12 atolls and 1 inhabited island. All the islands are boat-shaped with reefs on their eastern sides and lagoons towards their west. The growing popularity of this pristine location has led to a higher inflow of tourists from several parts of India. This is also due to the availability of more affordable Lakshadweep tour package costs in recent years.

There are numerous Lakshadweep packages available for travellers that cover several beaches and other landmarks across the islands. Tourists can witness a wonderful fusion of unique Indian, Arabic, Portuguese and British cultural influences during their visit. The local dialect is derived from Malayalam and the delicious cuisine of the region is another attraction for those booking Lakshadweep holiday packages.

Best Time to Visit Lakshadweep

The best time to visit a Lakshadweep & book tour package is between the months of September and May when the weather conditions remain pleasant and suitable for watersports activities. Temperatures usually hover between 22-36 degrees Celsius in this period. It is also a great time to book Lakshadweep honeymoon packages.

Most travellers avoid booking Lakshadweep tour packages in the monsoon (between June and August) due to heavy rainfall.

Best Places to Visit in Lakshadweep

There are several attractive destinations that can be explored with a Lakshadweep tour package. Here are some places to visit in Lakshadweep worth including in the itinerary for Lakshadweep packages.

Kalpeni Islands - A worthy addition to most Lakshadweep holiday packages, these uninhabited satellite islands offer gorgeous views and ample opportunities for swimming, reef walking, snorkelling and kayaking.

Minicoy Island - This charming island is a favourite for travellers booking Lakshadweep Samudram packages. Minicoy Island is 200 kilometres away from the Kavaratti Island and lies near the Maldives. Visitors can explore the inland lake here with its mirror-like surface and the British lighthouse that dates back to 1885. Another attraction for those booking Lakshadweep travel packages is the tuna cannery here.

Chetlat Island - With its beautiful beach and rows of coconut trees, Chetlat Island is another attraction worth adding to the itineraries for Lakshadweep travel packages. It is around 37 kilometres away from Kiltan and offers lip-smacking tuna preparations, shimmering sunsets and abundant opportunities for birdwatching.

Kadmat Islands - Those booking a Lakshadweep islands package tour can also consider visiting the Kadmat Islands during their trips. Covering 9.3 kilometres, they are a preferred nesting spot for marine turtles and are also famous for watersports activities like diving, snorkelling and kayaking.

Bangaram Island - Surrounded by soft sandy beaches and clear waters, Bangaram Island is one of the most attractive places to add to Lakshadweep trip packages. It is close to the better-known Agatti Island and is a popular destination for adventure activities.

Agatti Island - A famous getaway for beach-lovers, Agatti Island is only accessible through boats. Those booking Lakshadweep cruise packages can also include visits to the island in their itineraries. The area abounds with marine life and is roughly 460 kilometres away from Kochi.

These are only a few of the exotic destinations that tourists can visit with a Lakshadweep tour package. There are several options with reasonable Lakshadweep tour packages prices too, making it easier to plan quick getaways to the islands.

Best Places to Eat in Lakshadweep

Those booking Lakshadweep tour packages 7 days, should not miss visits to famous local eateries on their trips. These are some of the top choices worth considering in this regard.
