Attila Valter completes Visma-Lease a Bike Giro d'Italia lineup

Hungarian joins Van Aert, Uijtdebroeks and Kooij in eclectic eight-rider squad

Attila Valter stands out in the red, white and green national champion's jersey

Visma-Lease a Bike have confirmed their eight-rider roster and goals for the Giro d’Italia , with Attila Valter reportedly given the last slot in the line-up.

The Dutch squad have established a trend of naming their Grand Tour roster at the start of the season to clarify their goals, hierarchy and altitude training plans

Jonas Vingegaard will again target the Tour de France , with key support from the Sepp Kuss, with the American set to be given more of a leadership role as he defends his 2023 Vuelta a España title.

According to WielerFlits , Hungarian national champion Valter will join Wout van Aert, Cian Uijtdebroeks and Olav Kooij, as Visma-Lease a Bike target multiple stage victories and a solid overall classification from new signing Uijtdebroeks.

'We will have a lot of chances' – Van Aert and Kooij plan for Giro d'Italia success Wout van Aert insists he won't target general classification at debut Giro d'Italia Giro d'Italia 2024

Also on the eight-rider roster are Jan Tratnik, Edoardo Affini, Robert Gesink and Wilco Kelderman, giving Visma-Lease a Bike a strong, experienced and talented team.

Van Aert has opted to ride the Giro d’Italia so he can prepare at altitude for the Paris Olympic Games, missing the Tour for the first time since joining his current side in 2019.

Cian Uijtdebroeks was eighth in the 2023 Vuelta a España before his bitter divorce from Bora-Hansgrohe and has been identified as a future Grand Tour leader by Visma-Lease a Bike.

Olav Kooij will target the sprint stages at the Giro d’Italia on his Grand Tour debut after taking 25 wins in his last two seasons.

Valter raced the Giro d’Italia in 2021, wearing the leader’s maglia rosa for three days on former team Groupama-FDJ. He also rode the Giro d’Italia in 2022 when the Corsa Rosa started in Hungary. Last year Valter was part of the Jumbo-Visma long list for the Tour de France but was not selected and raced the Vuelta a España.

According to WielerFlits , Valter replaces Norway’s Johannes Staune-Mittet in the Visma-Lease a Bike line-up, although the 2023 Giro Next Gen winner may be first reserve and could still attend the pre-race altitude camp in April.

This year’s Giro d’Italia starts in Turin and includes two key time trial stages before a final week in the mountains and a closing stage in central Rome.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), Ben O’Connor (Decathlon-AG2R), Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) will all ride the Corsa rosa, with Pogačar targeting a rare Giro-Tour double.

"The internal competition is very strong" - Attila Valter unsure if he will ride Grand Tour in 2023

One of the new faces at Jumbo-Visma for 2023, Attila Valter joined from Groupama - FDJ with big hopes of helping the team and proving himself at the Grand Tours although it no longer seems that will be the case.

"Initially it was the intention that I would do the Giro d'Italia . I've ridden it three times already," Valter, who's career-best performance at the Giro came in 2021 when he finished 14th in the general classification, told WielerFlits. "It should be clear that Jumbo-Visma is going for the overall victory in the Giro. They therefore want a team that gives 100%. The team management just didn't want to do that with me. At 24 years old, they think I'm still much too young to always be submissive. I therefore get my own opportunities in other races.”

"The documentary was ultimately made for the fans" - Merijn Zeeman excited for world to see 'All-In: Team Jumbo-Visma'

"If you want to fully prepare yourself for that, you should be on altitude training during the classics. This is a better way for my personal development," he continues. "But I still love the grand tours. Although the internal competition is very strong, I hope to ride the Vuelta a España after the summer.”

So with three weeks of his calendar now freed up, which races are in the sights of the Hungarian national road race champion? "The Ardennes classics, where we start without a leader and I have a free role,” Valter says. "My values are not close to those of Primož and Jonas. But it's not impossible that I'll ever get it. Jumbo-Visma sees that in me. It is now up to me to enforce opportunities. That is possible within this team. The goal this year is mainly to discover where my strength now lies: in the grand tours, or in the classics?"

Primoz Roglic "told the team that I was a potential Tour winner" - Jonas Vingegaard

Hungarian Attila Valter joins the world's strongest cycling team

August 29. 2022. – 12:28 PM

Fehér János

Hungary’s best cyclist, Attila Valter is continuing his career as part of the Jumbo-Visma Road Cycling World-Tour team, where his team members will include this year’s Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard, olympic champion Primož Roglič, and the biggest star of the sport: Wout van Aert. Valter is leaving the French team of Groupama-FDJ after two successful seasons.

Jumbo-Visma introduced its three new team members on its website. Other than Valter, Slovenian cyclist Jan Tratnik and the British Thomas Gloag are also joining the Dutch team.

“I think this environment is the best for me to develop further. Team Jumbo-Visma is a top team that guides its riders very well to a higher level. Due to the conversations I had with the team management, my confidence was boosted a lot. I’m hoping I can fulfill my potential in the coming years.” – the team’s website quotes Valter.

One of the team’s sports directors, Merijn Zeeman commented by saying: “We have been following Attila’s development for years. We have seen his great capabilities both at the races and during the tests. We look forward to working with him, and helping him reach his full potential”.

The contract Valter signed with Jumbo-Visma is effective until the end of 2025, so next year the audience will also be seeing a Hungarian championship jersey with Jumbo’s logo on it during the races.

It’s like being drafted by Real Madrid

Based in the Netherlands, Jumbo-Visma is the pinnacle of the cycling sport, there is currently no more successful, more professional or better prepared cycling team. To use a football analogy, signing for them is a bit like signing for defending Champions League champions Real Madrid.

Their World Tour roster of 29 riders is backed by a huge support staff of over 100, including dozens of coaches and sports directors, and a whole row of massage therapists, doctors, dietitians and mechanics. They already have 41 wins this season, including Slovenia's Primož Roglič’s victories at the one-week races of Paris-Nice and Critérium du Dauphiné and are in third place overall at the ongoing Vuelta a España.

The clear highlight of their season was the Tour de France, which they completely dominated: after six stage wins, the Dane Jonas Vingagard followed up last year's second place with a win over defending champion Tadej Pogačar, and on top of winning the yellow jersey, he also won the mountain points race, i.e. the polka dot jersey. The green jersey also went to Jumbo, as Wout van Aert simply had no rival in the points race.

What could be ahead for Attila Valter?

Valter’s career has been on an almost uninterrupted upward trajectory: he was 21 when he first competed in the World Tour as a member of the Polish CCC team. That same year, he won the Tour de Hongrie and finished 27th at his first three-week cycling tour, the Giro d’ Italia.

CCC fell victim to the Covid-pandemic and ceased operations, but Valter was not left without a team, as he signed for the French team with a long history, Groupama FDJ. Then, in 2021 he exceeded his results from the previous year, and won the pink jersey at the Giro, and finished 14th overall at the Italian race. Other significant results of his are coming in 12th at the Lombardia, and finishing fourth early this year at the one-day race of Strade Bianche, and fifth at the Tour of the Alps race.

At this year’s Giro, which started in Budapest , he also showed that he is a team player who is willing to make a sacrifice so his team member could win. And when he was given freedom for a breakaway in stage 19, he reached fourth place, which with a bit of luck could have even been a podium finish.

Valter will now have the opportunity to move up in the hierarchy within the next few years – but for this to happen, he will have to consistently perform well in a team where the competition is much bigger than it was at Groupama-FDJ.

No matter how Valter's time at Jumbo turns out, the fact that he received an offer from a team of this level is a huge accolade in itself, as it means that the managers, scouts and coaches at Jumbo-Visma see great potential in him and believe he can develop even further under their tutelage.

Attila Valter: The First Hungarian to wear the Pink Jersey

Attila Valter is the first Hungarian to wear the leader’s jersey at the Giro d’Italia. But who is the 22-year-old taking Italy by storm?

Words: Joe Timms

When examining the Giro d’Italia startlist, Attila Valter would not be the first name that grabs the attention of a regular cycling fan. However, after Thibaut Pinot announced he wouldn’t ride the Tour of Italy, Groupama-FDJ’s race plans were heavily altered. From GC ambitions to stage and jersey hunting, their entire squad would now be afforded a plethora of opportunities without a GC leader to tend to. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, Pinot’s non-attendance could even be viewed as a blessing in disguise — it has afforded Attila Valter the chance to introduce himself to the world.

Still aged just 22, Valter’s WorldTour career is in its early phases. However, he is clearly a force to be reckoned with right now. After he claimed the maglia rosa on the San Giacomo climb on stage 6 ,  who is the Giro's new Hungarian leader?

Valter signed for Groupama-FDJ in 2021 for what would be his second season in the pro ranks. He joined the CCC Development team in 2019 where he would ride a range of lower category stage races. At this level, Valter was able to make an impression frequently, particularly when the road went uphill. In June 2019 at the Tour of Hungary, Valter’s home race, he finished an impressive third overall where he was only beaten by Krists Neilands and his good friend Márton Dina , with whom he rode with at the Pannon Cycling Team in the 2018 season.

Valter’s promise would continue to grow a few months later when he raced the Tour de l’Avenir. The ‘Baby Tour de France’ is now famed for discovering the next generation of talent — Egan Bernal and Tadej Pogačar won in 2017 and 2018 respectively. The Hungarian wasn’t a major contender in the GC but did win one of the queen mountain stages to Tignes. The stage was a mere 73km but boasted over 2,500 metres of climbing. It is already obvious that Valter's skillset lies in the mountains.

His performances throughout the season were enough to convince CCC that he was worthy of his first WorldTour contract with the senior team. Valter continued to ride predominantly second tier races  where, among other results, he recorded an impressive top 10 at Gran Piemonte. Later in the year, Valter returned to his homeland for the Tour of Hungary. This time, Valter dominated the mountain-top finish and won solo, also winning overall. It was the first time since 2005 that a Hungarian had won the race and Valter had done so at the age of just 22.

This was the perfect prelude ahead of Valter’s Grand Tour debut, the 2020 Giro d’Italia. Valter was expected to ride in support of his team leader Ilnur Zakarin, but the Russian’s GC chances faded quickly. Although the Hungarian didn’t win a stage, his performance at the Giro set a trend which has continued to this point in his career. Notably he improved as the race progressed, despite it being his debut Grand Tour. He claimed his first top 10 of the race on the final mountain stage to Sestriere. This trend has only continued into his second pro season after signing with Groupama-FDJ.

After he was largely anonymous over the first few days of the Volta a Catalunya in March 2021 (even when racing to the  Vallter 2000 ski station ), he finished an impressive third in the tricky final stage around Barcelona. He joined the early breakaway and was only outlasted by Thomas De Gendt and Matej Mohorič — a clear sign of Valter’s pedigree.

So, should we be surprised by Valter’s pink performance at the Giro d’Italia thus far? Perhaps, but the Hungarian has displayed continuous development, powers of recovery throughout stage races and elite climbing skills already in his young career. Considering all of the above, what could Valter realistically hope to achieve at the Giro d’Italia this year?

Speaking  after  claiming the  maglia rosa , Valter said "I will do my best to wear it proudly and show my respect for the jersey. I'm also the first Hungarian to wear the jersey and I want to show a really good example."

When asked how long he can hold the jersey after stage 6, Valter responded, "Now for sure it will be on me, I will sleep with it. As we saw yesterday it's a really demanding race. You have to stay in the moment, anything can happen in this race. I hope to stay as much as possible in this beautiful jersey."

With a flat stage next, Valter will hope to spend at least one more night with the maglia rosa.  His first real challenge lies on stage 8.

Giro d’italia: attila valter says corner in final 50m made finish ‘dangerous’, the hungarian almost crashed after missing corner in the final meters of stage 19..

SANTUARIO DI CASTELMONTE, Italy (VN) — Attila Valter (Groupama-FDJ) has criticized the decision to put a corner in the final 50 meters of stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia after he almost crashed in the finale.

Valter was part of a five-rider group that was contesting the victory in Santuario di Castelmonte. As the sprint to the line wound up, the five leaders had to navigate a tight left turn shortly before the finish line.

Both Valter and Andrea Vendrame (AG2R-Citroën) went straight on and nearly collided with the barriers. Valter said later that placing such a sharp turn so close to the line made the finale dangerous.

“I knew that there was a corner in the finish, but I didn’t know it was such a big left corner and we all almost crashed, the five of us in the sprint,” Valter said at the finish line. “I don’t know why we needed a left turn in the final 50 meters, it doesn’t change too much but it made the finish much more dangerous. Thankfully, we didn’t crash.”

“I don’t know what difference it would have made because the person who takes the corner first would normally win the race, so the person who gets there first wins the race,” he said.  “It just makes it a bit more nervous and dangerous.”

Valter said that some dud information regarding the bend, plus the race vehicles going straight on, only added to the confusion at the bend. Vendrame and Valter were headed toward a side road, which was being used to host the race podium and parked cars of those who had come to the top.

“I also didn’t get right information, I didn’t know it was a left corner. I was on the wheel of Andrea and we both went straight, I think we both thought it was a right corner,” he said. “From that side, with 150 with an easy left bend you see nothing, and then it’s going uphill so you really know nothing and then the motos are going in a different direction. If I did it again, I would know but for the first time it’s a little bit much.

“I timed it a bit late and then this was really a big surprise this left corner. Nobody was really happy with this left corner.”

The breakaway started the day with 12 riders, and it soon became clear that it would be allowed to stay away as its lead extended to over 10 minutes. The steep slopes of the Slovenian climb of the Kolovrat split the break and gave Valter a chance to go clear with Koen Bouwman and Mauro Schmid.

However, Valter said afterward that the trio was much too wary of each other, which allowed dropped riders to get back. Valter believes that he might have been able to improve on his fourth place had he taken the race by the reins, but he may have had to sacrifice a chance at victory.

“For sure, I could have done more. I should have sprinted first, or I should have made the climb harder. I still had good legs but with Koen and Mauro we were quite on the same level, so it was a ‘who is going to pull’ game and I just waited too much,” he said. “It was not really clever to let Andrea back to us, because we had already dropped him but, of course, when he is seeing the finish line, he is getting another extra power.

“For sure, I could have made the podium if I pulled the climb myself and we went to the finish with three, but my goal was the victory today and I still had to wait for the victory.”

Attila Valter got into the breakaway with 11 other riders

Valter came into the Giro with some GC intentions after finishing 14th overall in last year’s race following a stint in the pink jersey. However, his race never really got going and he was out of the running very early on, falling to 34th in the GC standings at over two hours behind the pink jersey Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers).

Though he has been able to play a role in his team’s success at the race with Arnaud Démare sprinting to three stage victories and holding a strong lead in the points competition, Valter has not been able to shine like he did in 2021.

While he didn’t manage to take the stage win in the end, the Hungarian could take some small pleasure out of just being in contention.

“It’s a good way to close the Giro. I finally did a good breakaway and I had a reasonable result. In a break like this only the win counts but I didn’t have the best Giro myself,” Valter said. “I could do work for Arnaud [Démare] and I am happy to do that, but I wished for a little bit more. Today, I was close to the victory and I have never been so close to the victory in a grand tour like this. Of course, I’m a little bit disappointed but it’s a relief to at least do something at the end of the Giro.

“It’s a good fourth place for me after the race. I felt really good today, but I didn’t attack before because I trust my sprint, even though I know Andrea, Koen, and Mauro all had really good sprints. On paper, they are better, but I felt like I had really good legs and I waited too much.”

A csapat sprinterklasszisa, Elia Viviani a pályán olimpiai bajnok omniumban, országúton kilencszeres háromhetes szakaszgyőztes.

A 2022-es viadalon az összetett verseny győztese az Ineos színeiben tekerő Eddie Dunbar volt, de tavaly nem sikerült megvédenie a címét az együttesnek.

A 45. Tour de Hongrie-ra – amely Karcagról rajtol és a főváros érintésével Pécsen zárul – május 8. és 12. között kerül sor, várhatóan húsz csapat részvételével.
