New York club pro lives the dream by taking medalist honors in Champions Tour Q School

1233001297

Rob Labritz has competed in eight PGA Championships, including this year's event at Kiawah Island.

Darren Carroll/PGA of America

There are hundreds of PGA professionals around the world who grind on the range day after day and play in their section tournaments, dreaming that it seasons them for the big leagues once they turn 50 years old. The odds are incredibly long, considering the talent pool of proven tour pros and the miniscule number of opportunities for fulltime status.

Yet, every once in a while, someone pulls of a stunning breakthrough that lends hope to all of those who still believe. This year’s PGA Tour Champions Qualifying School finals produced not one, but two of those stories.

MORE: How golf is doing more than ever before to protect wildlife

On Friday in Lutz, Fla., longtime New York PGA teaching pro Rob Labritz not only exceled in his first senior Q School he dominated it, closing with a bogey-free eight-under-par 64 at TPC Tampa Bay to earn medalist honors with a 17-under total.

The top five finishers earned fully exempt status for the 2022 PGA Tour Champions season, and among the other four qualifiers was Roger Rowland, a 54-year-old pro from Jacksonville, Fla., who closed with a 65 to finish solo fourth at nine under. Rowland never played on the PGA Tour and last competed on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2000. He has five senior starts since 2018, with a T-43 as his best finish.

Also getting their fulltime cards after tying for second at 14 under were former PGA Tour player David Branshaw, 52, and Thailand’s Thongchai Jadee, who had to return to Q School after playing a limited schedule in 2020-21 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tom Gillis, 53, finished alone in fifth at eight under.

The sixth through 30th finishers are eligible to compete in Champions Tour open qualifiers. Included in that group are Guy Boros, Skip Kendall, Paul Stankowski, Esteban Toledo and Ken Duke. Among the notable players among the 71 who finished all four rounds and didn’t earn status were Harrison Frazar, Omar Uresti, Olin Browne and Frank Lickliter.

Labritz, 50, is a highly regarded pro who is the director of golf at GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford Hills, N.Y. His impressive resume includes eight appearances in the PGA Championship, including twice being the low club professional (in 2010 Whistling Straits and ’19 at Bethpage Black). Labritz also has three victories in the New York State Open.

After the third round, Labritz considered what reaching the Champions Tour would mean and said, “This is what I’ve worked for my entire life. Every time I’m out hitting golf balls, I’m thinking of this. I’m thinking of the shots I need to hit to make sure this happens. It’s super important, but it’s super fun, too. I’m doing what I love, and there’s nothing better.”

Rob Labritz spent 18 years 'manifesting' goal of reaching PGA Tour Champions

rob labritz champions tour earnings

PHOENIX — Rob Labritz zipped around Phoenix Country Club in two hours, 45 minutes on Thursday, signing for a 2-under 69 to open the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

But while he played fast in the opening round of the PGA Tour Champions season finale, his journey getting to the senior circuit was nearly two decades in the making.

As the 36th and last man to make the field, Labritz played solo (markers aren’t allowed anymore) after  Steve Stricker’s withdrawal  the day before led to an odd number of players. But Labritz didn’t seem to mind.

“I used to get 18 holes in with a cart in under an hour at GlenArbor, at my home course,” he said of the private course in Westchester, New York, where he was the long-time director of golf.

A club pro for 32 years in all, Labritz is finally a full-time professional golfer. There were attempts made at a PGA Tour career but that wasn’t meant to be.

“I went to Q school three or four times, I played in eight PGA Championships, won tons of state opens, everything up in the Met section,” he said after his round Thursday. “As a director of golf, I was pretty bored, to be honest. We built a high-end private club, which is phenomenal, but after 32 years I started getting a little…” and before he finished that thought, he revealed a long-held goal.

“Eighteen years ago I made a decision to try to get to the Champions tour. I started manifesting it,” he said. “Every night I would go into my room, right before I went to bed and sit there for five minutes and just envision it happening. I did that for 18 years. And here we are.”

Without a trace of remorse for decisions that he made, Labritz explained that life just happened.

“I felt like I was close but I always knew I was a part-time player because I had a full-time job. As a director of golf, I coached more than a thousand, 1,400 hours a year for 23 years, so think about how many hours I was putting into the job, 60-80 hours a week,” he said.

“When you have a wife and three kids and a mortgage, it’s hard to just say ‘OK, I’m going to go practice. You figure out the money.'”

Playing in his 52nd event this week in his second year on the Champions tour, Labtriz has figured out the money, having earned more than $1.1 million. But more than that, what he’s doing validates all those nights he envisioned such a future.

“I’m in dream heaven right now.”

No more worrying about those long work weeks. No more trying to figure out how to find time to practice. It’s full speed ahead as a player.

“It’s all about getting the ball in the hole right now,” he said.

Westchester Pro Rob Labritz Wins a Spot on the PGA Tour Champions

Glenarbor golf club pro rob labritz has finally achieved his lifelong dream of qualifying to play on the pga tour..

Westchester local Rob Labritz has achieved his lifelong dream of qualifying to play on the PGA Tour. The 50-year-old Director of Golf at GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford won the PGA Tour Champions qualifying tournament to earn playing privileges on the senior circuit where he’ll be competing against the likes of Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, and Bernhard Langer. Labritz carded the low score in the tournament, winning by three strokes and finishing with a bogey-free, seven-birdie round of 64.

“I’ve been envisioning this happening. And it did, which is crazy,” Labritz said after his triumph at TPC Tampa Bay. Some 30 years ago, the ebullient club pro started his campaign to compete at the highest levels. He never quite made the final leap, although he showed his mettle playing in eight PGA Championships and finishing as low club pro in 2010 and 2019, the only two-time club pro winner since the PGA of America limited the Championship exemptions to 20 players in 2006. His over-burdened trophy shelf includes glassware and hardware from numerous Met PGA championships, Westchester Opens, and three New York State Opens, among many others.

“I feel super-confident,” Labritz told me in September as he was preparing for his run at the Champions Tour. “My game is good, my health is good, my family and the folks at GlenArbor couldn’t be more supportive, and, most of all, I just feel it all coming together.”

Labritz was one of only five players to earn status on the PGA Tour Champions at the tournament.

Rob Labritz perseveres from PGA club pro to PGA TOUR Champions member

Change Text Size

Rob Labritz might be a PGA club professional, but he never has strayed from being a competitive golfer.

The director of golf at the Gary Player-designed GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford Hills, New York, he also has played in whatever nearby events were available. He prepped for PGA TOUR Champions Q-School in early December by winning the Massachusetts Open, Rhode Island Open, Met Professional Championship and Westchester Open, which just happened to be at GlenArbor.

Labritz is not a guy who lacks for confidence in his game. So the fact he closed Q-school with a 7-under 64 in the final round to finish three strokes ahead of the field about six months after turning 50 shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

Only, it did. Because as Bernhard Langer will tell anyone who will listen, the hardest tour in golf to get on and stay on is PGA TOUR Champions. Only 78 players are permitted in most events, and 36 of those spots are reserved for the top 36 on the previous year’s money list. Most of the other spots go to past champions based on a handful of factors, chief among them a player’s standing on the PGA TOUR’s all-time money list.

Only five players are awarded full status via Q-school. What they do with it from there is up to them.

Because GlenArbor is a world-class course that has hosted a slew of various professional events in his years as its director of golf, Labritz has come to be friendly with several prominent pros. He said Gary Player was one of the first to call and congratulate him on being the medalist at Q school, as did Tom Watson.

Labritz said longtime friend Jerry Kelly has been coaching him up on what to expect as he transitions to a full-time member of PGA TOUR Champions.

“This is just the coolest thing,” said Labritz, whose emotional call to his wife after securing his status went viral on social media. “And for guys like Gary Player and Tom Watson to reach out … I’m living a dream.

“Jerry Kelly and I have been friends for a long time, and he has helped me with what to know and where to stay and how to navigate which is … it’s tricky.”

Labritz has three children: a 19-year-old son at LSU (look for David Toms to introduce himself), a daughter who’s 8, and an 11-month old baby girl he called a “quarantine pregnancy.” So when he’s not busy at GlenArbor, he’s busy at home. Some PGA TOUR Champions winnings would go a long way toward feeding that extra mouth at home.

Labritz said he has been preparing to make a run at the Champions Tour for a long time. He was the medalist at the Canadian Tour school in 2004 and played well in two years on the Canadian Tour, but after a divorce he decided he wanted to be around for his son and took the job at GlenArbor.

“I got offered this great job at this beautiful place and that was that,” Labritz said. “But the desire to compete never left. I’ve always competed in the Met section, always tried to win every event I played in. I just had limited time to practice as an instructor and a director of golf.

“But now I’ll have more time to put into my game. It will be interesting to see where I can take it.”

He plans to play out of GlenArbor, returning when the PGA TOUR Champions schedule allows to continue his duties at the club.

“I have the greatest team on the planet,” Labritz said about the GlenArbor staff. “They’re used to me competing as often as I can, though this will be a lot different.”

So what does Labritz say he has in the way of expectations?

“I’m gonna go out there and win. I wanna win senior majors,” Labritz said. “I want to finish in the top 36 and I want to win. In my belly, my heart on my sleeve … I’m not a cocky person by any means, but I believe in my ability and what I’ve seen in preparing for this.

“And I’m going to have a great time doing it. It’s not gonna be put your head down and not talk to anybody. I want to get to know some guys and have a good time. We’re 50 and we play golf for a living. How cool is that? That’s the difference I’ve seen in qualifiers. You don’t hear guys swearing or throwing clubs. Guys are just really nice.”

Labritz says his game is built around being a very good ball-striker who likes to “work the ball a lot.” He said the great majority of his practice time in preparation for PGA TOUR Champions will be on his short game.

“I’m a pretty consistent player, have been throughout my career at the section level,” Labritz said. “I’m still relatively long, good around the greens, and I’m a good putter. I give myself 40 seconds to hit every shot and enjoy the heck out of just being able to play golf.”
