Australia highlights

Champagne Pools on Fraser Island

Explore the world’s largest sand island

K’gari ( Fraser Island ) means “paradise” for the local Butchulla people, and it certainly is. Sweeping stretches of white sandy coast, rugged headlands, glimmering lakes, dense rainforest and native wildlife – it’s a natural playground begging to be explored. See the rusting Maheno Shipwreck, bob along Eli Creek, take a cool dip in K’gari’s many lakes, try your luck at whale watching, or simply take in the endless views from your four-wheel drive as you cruise the sand highway.

A natural swimming pool and waterfall in the Kimberley

Discover the wildy beautiful Kimberley

The Kimberley is Australia’s version of the Wild West. Think vast deserts, secluded gorges, untouched coastline, dense rainforest and loads of native wildlife to see in their natural habitat. If you have an intrepid spirit, the Kimberley won’t disappoint. Hike through mazes of fascinating rock formations, swim under waterfalls, learn about the rich First Nations history, camp under the glittering Milky Way and experience true outback life in remote towns.

A person walking around Uluru

Discover Australia’s Red Centre

Uluru means “great pebble” for the traditional owners of the land, but it’s so much more than a huge rock. Often called the spiritual heart of Australia, the connection to country runs deep here. Uluru has been a sacred place for First Nations people for thousands of years. Standing at 384 metres high and 10 km in circumference with concealed caves, waterfalls and ancient rock art, it's truly breathtaking. This is your chance to connect to country and learn the unique stories behind Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Watarrka.

Hikers on a trail in Cradle Mountain

Tackle one of Australia’s greatest treks

Tassie is gorgeous. Full stop. But when you head up to Cradle Mountain you’ll be even more awestruck. Trek through thick rainforest canopies, sweet-smelling eucalyptus groves, alpine moors and lush valleys. The hikes are challenging, but you’ll be rewarded with soul-stirring views of the surrounding peaks and bright blue lakes. The best part? You’ll be connected with nature around the clock with nights spent under the stars in historic camping huts.

Where should I visit next; the Northern Territory or Western Australia?

Both states have an abundance of natural beauty including jaw-dropping national parks and endless sandy beaches so settling the debate of the Northern Territory vs Western Australia is a hard one. Both bursting with Aboriginal culture, vibrant and multicultural cities, and more wildlife than you'll be able to spot, each region is breathtaking in its own way.

New South Wales Tour Guide - Matt U.

Back in the early 80s, right after waving goodbye to school life, I went on a crazy adventure—hitchhiking solo around Australia for 14 months. It wasn't just about the sights and miles; it was about the people I met. Aussies are a generous bunch, they took me in like a lost cousin. I also hooked up with fellow travelers from every corner of the globe. Those months were like a masterclass in life, giving me a whole new perspective and opening up a world of experiences. Fast forward to today, and I'm not the hitchhiker anymore; I'm the one behind the wheel. No, not a taxi driver, but a private driver guide showing international visitors around the natural wonders of Australia. It's like life's way of saying, "Hey, time to give back!" :) Matt

“ Cathedral Ranges Southern Side ”

This tour has exceeded my expectation! I thank the supportive and knowledgeable Phil who led the whole bunch of beginners like our group. This hike was considered to be challenging for some of us, but it was so much fun as we got to explore various landscapes along the trail. We spent our lunch on the top of the range, so rewarding!! Best view to have lunch! What we love about the tour with Phil's guidance is that Phil didn't just bring us there, but he became one of the members in the group and he made us feel that we are capable, and as if he got our back! Truly incredible experience!

“ Cathedral Ranges Southern Circuit ”

Phil was an excellent guide, very helpful and knowledgeable. The cathedral ranges southern circuit was a very scenic and fun hike. The rock climbing and cave sections were very enjoyable and as the route was fairly level, it was not too strenuous apart from some uphill sections.

Cathedral Ranges Southern Scenic Tour (Private Car) - 1

Thank you Darren, it was really great hiking with you and I look forward to it in the future.

Explore the Australian Wilderness

“ NSW Bush Tour ”

Bright C.

Hey, thanks mate! It was my pleasure talking you both for a hike! See you in Sydney one day! Cheers, Matt

Online-Walk in Sydney's Wilderness

“ Excellent Tour! ”

Sorry for my late review. We had a great day taking an online tour with Matt to stroll in the bush in Sydney. I was surprised by the quality of the tour and the view at the cliff was just spectacular! The only thing is that we had 3 young kids in the tour, I wish he could explain things in a more plain language.

Windy C.

Thank you Windy for the wonderful review! I will definitely take your feedback into consideration and try to use easy-to-understand terms when there are young ones on my tour in future! I hope to take you and your family on my physical tour if you visit Australia one day.

Is an Escorted Tour Right for Me?

The great thing about escorted tours is you’ll always have an experienced guide at hand to provide local insight and travel recommendations throughout your journey. Many travelers prefer guided tours for their ease while visiting a foreign country. Australia is an English-speaking country and the currency works in a similar denomination to the U.S. dollar, so traveling throughout the country doesn’t have as many barriers as other foreign countries. However, a guided tour can help you orient yourself in each destination with a professional guide to lead the way. Every experience is contextualized with commentary and history, giving you profound insight into your destination. Travelers who like to travel with like-minded people may also enjoy escorted tours for the collective group experience in a new destination. If you’re curious about whether an escorted tour is right for you, our Destination Specialists are at hand to help you explore your options.

What Destinations Do Australia Escorted Tours Visit?

Most tours of australia visit four main destinations: sydney, cairns, melbourne and uluru (ayers rock).

These destinations are where you’ll find most of Australia’s top attractions.

Many of our Australia escorted tours begin in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkeling cruises are usually included during your stay in Cairns so you can experience the underwater wonders of the reef. See colorful coral reefs, tropical fish and sea turtles as you snorkel the warm, crystal clear waters. Onboard guides make sure you’re comfortable snorkeling before taking to the waters, but glass bottom boats and underwater observatories are also available for non-swimmers.

Melbourne is a popular Australia destination for its unique art, music and food scene – some say even the coffee is the best in the world! It’s regarded as Australia’s most European city, with a network of hidden laneway bars, restaurants and shops that are often missed on first sight. A number of museums, galleries and music venues keep Melbourne’s love of fine arts strong, with something to do just about any day of the week. Further outside of Melbourne you’ll find the wildlife haven of Phillip Island, home to the world’s smallest penguins. Our guided tours include free days for you to explore on your own, perfect for joining a day trip from Melbourne to Phillip Island or perhaps a road trip journey on the Great Ocean Road.

Uluru is the cultural and spiritual heart of Australia, where its ancient Aboriginal culture thrives among the red desert landscapes of the outback. Out of the ground rises Uluru, the sacred rock formation important to the legends and creation stories of the local Aboriginal tribes. At Uluru, our tours visit this famous landmark to witness the sunrise and sunsets give the rock an otherworldly red glow, breathtaking to behold. Most trips fly into Alice Springs before continuing on to Uluru, with a day in Alice Springs to explore this outback town.

As one of the world’s top travel destinations, a visit to Sydney is a must on any Australian tour. Explore the sparkling harbor city on a harbor cruise tour, gliding past top Sydney landmarks. Learn what makes the Sydney Opera House Australia’s most famous destination on a guided tour. Visit Bondi Beach, arguably Australia’s most well-known beach around the world.

Other tours of Australia visit more unique destinations. The 5-day Australia Southern Capitals tour travels through Australia’s rural country and historic towns from Sydney to Melbourne, with a stop in Australia’s capital – Canberra.

One of Australia’s most stunning yet least visited destinations is Tasmania. Join the Wonders of Tasmania tour for a guided journey through the spectacular landscapes, rich convict history and gourmet artisan produce of this island state.

Most Australian tours focus on the east coast, however the Tastes of Southern Australia tour travels through Victoria and South Australia for a trip through Australia’s coast and country. The trip begins in Sydney, traveling through Canberra to Melbourne, journeying on the Great Ocean Road and meeting the wildlife of Kangaroo Island. Wine tours to Barossa Valley wine region from Adelaide are also included, for a taste of Australia’s famous wine.

What’s Included in an Australia Escorted Tour?

Our inclusive tours are designed to showcase the best of this incredible destination, without the stress of traveling somewhere new..

A knowledgeable and expert guide will meet you as soon as you land in Australia and transfer you to your hotel so you don’t have to worry about how to get there. Your tour director will guide your experience in Australia with their profound insight and local knowledge, leading you through every step of the way.

Meet your group of fellow travelers who will share your tour experience. Spend time together exploring Australia on included tours and excursions, with some free days to enjoy on your own.

Guided activities and excursions are included throughout your trip, depending on the trip you choose. Most trips include city tours, short walks to explore each destination, and wildlife tours. Many of our tours also include big bucket-list experiences such as snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, touring the Sydney Opera House and a sunset viewing of Uluru’s changing colors.

Each tour includes daily breakfast as well as several lunch and dinner experiences. Highlight dinner experiences at top-rated restaurants, open-air degustations under the outback night sky, and receptions following Aboriginal dancing performances are also included in featured trips.

No need to worry about booking your hotels throughout the journey. Our tours take care of that for you by arranging your group stays comfortable hotels and resorts highlighting Australia’s local hospitality.

How Much Does an Australia Escorted Tour Cost?

An escorted tour includes the costs of a personal tour guide throughout the whole trip, all hotels, day tours and most meals. These tours are considered inclusive trips, and because of all the inclusions in one tour, the cost tends to run higher than non-escorted trips.

The cost of a tour also depends on how long you’re staying in Australia, how many destinations you’re visiting and the class of service you’re after (3-star, 4-star, 5-star).

Our tours of Australia begin as low as $1,425 and range to $13,370. Our low cost tours visit only a few destinations, yet still showcase unique wonders of Australia that you won’t see on any regular tour. Tours that travel to multiple destinations in Australia as well as across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand tend to price at a higher range. Traveling to two different countries in one trip will always incur a higher price tag, but it’s hard to put a price on such a once-in-a-lifetime trip!

If you`re an adventure couple, make your honeymoon even more memorable by going on your first adventure as newlyweds, just like Pablo and Carmen did! 💛 Here`s their story: "Last December, I got married to Carmen. We are from Spain, and we wanted a different honeymoon, so we decided to join the 14-day Sydney to Cairns tour. 🗺️ It has been the trip of our lives. They prepare everything with great care, and you can see/feel the social responsibility of the company and the service providers they have chosen.💚We were lucky to have Wara as a guide, as he is passionate about his country and a person fully committed to his community, able to give us a lot of information and anecdotes that made the trip much more interesting. The first week of the tour was great, seeing spectacular places and having the opportunity to go through the koala hospital, but the second week was totally incredible. Destination must-see's.

Australia ms1

Ayers Rock (Uluru):

You will find this towering sandstone rock formation rising from the desert floor in the southern part of the Northern Territory of central Australia. It sits in a remote part of the Outback 208 miles southwest of the nearest large town, Alice Springs. The rock is one of Australia’s most recognizable natural landmarks and rises 1,142 feet… making it 2,381 feet above sea level.

Australia ms2

The most populous city in Australia is located on Australia’s east coast. This lively metropolis is surrounded by one of the world’s largest natural harbors. The first British settlers founded the city of Sydney in 1788, but it is said that the area had been inhabited for many years. Millions of tourists visit Sydney each year to see its natural features such as Sydney Harbour and Bondi Beach, as well as its man-made marvels like the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Australia ms3

The city was founded on August 30, 1835 and is located on a large natural bay – Port Phillip. Today it is often referred to as Australia’s cultural capital because of its renowned performing and visual arts scenes. Melbourne is known as the birthplace of Australian dance styles, the Australian film industry, Australian impressionist art and the Australian television industry.

Australia ms4

Kakadu National Park:

This protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia is about 100 miles east of Darwin. It is the largest national park in Australia covering 7,646 square miles, and measuring nearly 125 miles from north to south and 62 miles from east to west. The park is roughly half the size of Switzerland. Kakadu features many diverse landscapes perfect for outback adventure travel, nature activities and most of all, experiencing aboriginal culture.

Destination Must-Do's

Australia md1

Great Barrier Reef:

Experience one of the seven wonders of the natural world when you set off by boat for the Great Barrier Reef. As the world’s largest living organism, you’ll find over 2,800 individual coral reef systems which are home to amazingly diverse marine life. Their bright colors look remarkable against the turquoise waters. Jump in the water to snorkel and really experience the Reef in an immersive way! Stroll along the shore, relax on the beach, or just watch the fish and sea turtles swim past from the pier. It’s a truly good day at the Reef, mate.

Australia md2

Barossa Valley:

The valley located in South Australia is known as a major wine-producing region. In fact, it is renowned as one of the finest wine producing regions in the world. Located about 37 miles northeast of Adelaide, the valley is formed by the North Pala River, is home to more than 550 growers, and is famous for its Shiraz.

Australia md3

This island state that includes the island of Tasmania and the surrounding 334 islands is 150 miles south of the Australian mainland, separated by the Bass Strait. It may be famous for its Tasmanian Devil but it is also very eco-conscious with 45% of its land being reserves, national parks and World Heritage sites.

Australia md4

Phillip Island Penguin Parade

The little penguin is the smallest species of penguin. They are found on the coastlines of southern Australia and New Zealand. In Australia they are often called fairy penguins and in New Zealand they are known as little blue penguins or blue penguins. These penguins emerge from the shore at Phillip Island nearly every evening and make their way to their evening resting spots.

Sydney in the Fall

"We had an excellent time with Chris. He showed us some beautiful spots in Sydney. We enjoyed seeing Lavender Bay, Luna Park, the Sydney Bridge, seeing the beautiful Australian birds and finishing off in the rocks and Sydney Harbor. Chris had great insight and took some awesome photos for us! "

local Chris

Best day of our 16 day Australia vacation

"Was in touch with Matt for several months before we traveled Down Under. We told him what we were interested in (scenery and wildlife around Sydney) and he designed a perfect day. Due to our cruise schedule we only had one full day in Sydney before we flew home. Matt picked us up as we left their ship, gave us an amazing day and dropped us off at the Airport in time for our flight home. His tour included an amazing Kangaroo/koala encounter, scenic views, a great lunch at a nice beach, and other special extras. Do yourself a favor and hire Matt. He is very knowledgeable and personable!!!"

local Matt

Super walking tour with Robyn!

"Robyn has lots of great information, is so friendly and personable and took us to a few places we would have never seen. Great tour! Loved it!"

local Robyn

Fun and educational trip!!

"This tour was really a fun memorable experience for my daughters and myself! We got to see beautiful sceneries, saw some fluffy animals, visited a location wih aboriginal carvings, had lunch in a beautiful settings in avoca beach and also met with a very kind aboriginal artist who welcomed us into his home and shared some of the history of his ancestors with us. Georgia our tour guide was really nice, fun, helpful and knowledgable! We are grareful we go to experience this and would highly recommend Matt and Georgia to anyone who wants to experience Sydney’s surroundings in a day!"

guest Bayi

Fantastic intro to Sydney

"Robyn gave us an amazing tour of Sydney. She’s very knowledgeable and highly engaging. I highly recommend her tour! Thanks Robyn!"

guest Erich

Chris “rocks”

"Chris was amazing. We needed a tour outside his comfort zone, but he stepped up to the plate and created the perfect experience for us. I have mobility limitations making walking challenging. He figured out how to show us Sydney up close and personal without taxing me. He found exactly the sights that would interest us and then made it happen. He went above and beyond in every way. "

guest Susan

Tailored to my abilities and the weather

"Robyn was delightful and informative. It was windy and overcast — walking the Sydney Bridge did not appeal to me. She willing changed her normal route. Highly recommend!"

guest N

Robyn is great

"Great day with Robyn walking all over Sydney, discovering hidden gems as she shared great historical information and local culture insights. Highly recommend."

guest john

Our guide, Robyn, was outstanding!

"What a fabulous day we had on this food tour with Robyn! It was far more than just about food. We got to experience the local Sydney neighborhood of Newtown, learning about the area's history, culture and people as well as the food. Robyn was articulate, personable, highly knowledgeable, and interesting. She was easy to communicate with before our tour, quickly responding to my questions. She was also flexible, adjusting the tour to our group's needs, such as dietary restrictions. We went to a multitude of restaurants and a pub, tasting a large variety of foods and drinks. Everyone in our group loved the experience, and it far exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend it!"

guest Kathryn J

Wonderful tastings and tour guide

"Robyn took great care of us. The tour was tasty, fun, and informative. So glad we started our Sydney adventure here. "

guest Cate

Tours of Australia by Travel Style

Aerial view of Sydney Harbor with the Opera House and Bridge in Australia

The best time to visit Australia is during spring and fall in the Southern Hemisphere, which is the opposite of the seasons in North America. The warm weather, clear skies, and fewer crowds make March and April or September and October ideal months for tours to Australia.

Across March and April or September and October, the weather conditions are perfect for city tours, sightseeing, and visiting Australia’s famous beaches. It is still warm enough to explore popular cities like Sydney, though not too hot in places like the Great Barrier Reef or the Winelands .

While these months are ideal, Australia is a year-round destination and a great place to travel, regardless of the season. While Australia’s summer (December-February) is crowded with tourists and locals, it’s still a marvelously festive time for Christmas and New Years. Australia’s winter (June-August) is also an appealing option for escaping the crowds, snow sports, and more.

Our guide on the best time to visit Australia has more information to help you decide the right time for your trip.

The number of things to do and see in Australia can feel limitless, which is why we recommend that you spend at least two weeks to experience the highlights.

Two-week Australia tours reveal the highlights of the country, from Sydney’s iconic coastline to Melbourne’s artistic culture and Uluru’s fascinating folklore. In addition, they provide enough time to appreciate the natural beauty and heritage of the Great Barrier Reef, Northern Queensland, and more.

Should you have more time available, you can stay for longer and explore more or visit multiple South Pacific destinations on Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji tours . Shorter trips of 10 days , or even 7 days , are not only possible but also excellent options for tours focused on the highlights and what interests you most. How many days you stay is ultimately up to you and your availability, though we can help you decide.

Whether visiting Bondi Beach, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, or searching for wildlife in the Red Desert, where you go depends on the experiences you value most. That said, we recommend putting several top places on your radar, and these are some of our favorites:

  • Sydney : The Harbour City is not only one of the best cities to visit , but it’s also one of Australia’s largest. Known for its beautiful coastlines and fantastic beaches, including  Manly and Bondi beaches, Sydney offers everything from excellent cycling routes to access to national parks and much more.
  • Uluru: The famous monolith at the center of the Australian continent and Red Desert has an exceptional natural and cultural history. The local indigenous community has rich ties to the standing stone visible in preserved rock art and among the exhibits in the visitor center. From shifting natural colors to incredible stories, Uluru and the surrounding national park have an undeniably majestic allure.

Great Barrier Reef : The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system on Earth, one of the world's most magnificent natural wonders, and a top place to visit in Australia. Known for its breathtaking coral formations and diverse marine life, the reef offers unparalleled opportunities for diving, snorkeling, and exploring underwater wonders.

Whether seeing the Sydney Opera House or immersing yourself in Aboriginal culture, there is a long list of things to do in Australia , and here are some of our favorites:

  • Learn about Aboriginal culture on trips to heritage sites in the Outback
  • Enjoy a wide variety of Australian wildlife safaris, including Kangaroo safaris and Great Eight marine safaris
  • Cruise between idyllic islands and spend time on sun-kissed beaches or snorkeling at coral reefs
  • Tour scenic cities and embrace local culture

From secluded and romantic paradise shores to family-friendly coastlines with modern amenities, there are many stunning beaches to visit in Australia . Here are some of our favorites to consider for your trip:

  • Whitehaven Beach
  • Wineglass Bay
  • Vivonne Bay
  • Bondi Beach
  • Seventy-Five Mile Beach

Australia produces a variety of world-famous wines, and you can visit the breathtaking wine regions to taste their award-winning selections. Here are some of our top wine regions to explore on your trip to Australia:

  • Hunter Valley
  • Yarra Valley
  • The Barossa Valley
  • Margaret River

Australian wildlife is unique and fantastical, with different states and climates supporting different populations of animals on land and sea. Whether looking for unusual animals or visiting the best places to see wildlife , here’s our list of top animals to see on Australia tours:

  • Cassowaries
  • Tasmanian devils

Far North Queensland tour operators wait to reopen after ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper flooded Barron River

Warren Clinton stands on a muddy riverbank where his jetty and pontoon once stood.

He recounts his recent tribulations while they are still fresh in his mind but is frequently interrupted by the sound of his mobile phone ringing.

Each caller wants to take the riverboat tour of the mighty Barron River in Far North Queensland's rainforest mountain village of Kuranda.

Each time, Mr Clinton disappoints his caller — he does not know when he will be able to get back on the water.

"It's been very mentally draining, that's the most difficult part of it," he said.

Man in blue shirt, denim shots, woman in dark shorts, printed top, stand arm in arm on a riverbank, looking away seriously.

Operators still waiting

More than three months have passed since the ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper caused Barron's largest flood in more than a century.

Far North Queensland is heavily reliant on the tourist dollar, with one in five people employed in the industry, according to Tourism Tropical North Queensland.

But some tourism operators, including Warren and Melissa Clinton, are still not back on their feet.

An aerial image of a bridge over a flooded river full of muddy water, greenery on either side.

The business owners managed to save their boat from destruction in the flood, but the sheer deluge of water washed away their pontoon and a nearby weir.

"I've blocked out [tours] on our online booking system into May," Ms Clinton said.

"Because it's just taking so long and the weather is against you, getting the riverbank fixed and the weir fixed."

Peak season approaching

Governments have been encouraging tourists to go to far north Queensland ever since tropical cyclone Jasper struck in December, with discounted flights and accommodation packages .

Almost a three-hour drive north of Cairns is Cape Tribulation, a spot world famous for being the juncture of the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest.

A small river jetty and pontoon with a moored covered tour boat, red flags, greenery.

Businesses there only opened to visitors in March for the first time since December, in time for the Easter weekend.

Café owner Lawrence Mason could not hide his relief at being able to work again.

But he is realistic about the "massive amount of repair work" still to be done on the road into his northern community.

A $10 million grant program to rebuild infrastructure will close mid-April.

Applicants are also waiting to find out whether they will receive a share of money set aside to support those who've lost income.

Tourism Minister Michael Healy said he hoped to advise all 119 applications of the outcome "in coming days".

Wildlife recovering

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive Mark Olsen said it had been a "very stressful time".

"This is typically the launch pad for our main season but many of these businesses are coming in with very little cash flow," he said.

"So, we're hoping that in the next couple of days, we start to see those grant announcements coming through."

A riverboat cruises a wide river, viewed from above.

The Clintons expect it wil be at least five or six weeks before they can show people the wonders of the Barron again.

The visitors who make it there will see a very different landscape but the wildlife has shown signs of recovery.

"It's sort of helped clean the river, bring it back to its original wild state, I think," Mr Clinton said.

"The wildlife has been here longer than us, so they're used to this river flooding.

"It's amazing every year we go back after a flood, and the same fish are still there and the same crocodiles are still there."

Millions of people are traveling to see the total eclipse. Hotels, motels, and skydiving operators are making bank on it.

  • Millions of tourists are expected to boost economies in Texas and New York during the eclipse.
  • Hotels, an eyeglasses manufacturer, and even skydiving companies are preparing for increased business.
  • One study predicted that the eclipse could benefit the US economy with nearly $1.6 billion.

Insider Today

As millions of Americans get ready to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday — an event NASA has described as rare and "spectacular" — the phenomenon stands to lift local economies.

Various industries are poised to benefit from the millions of tourists flocking to cities in Texas, Ohio, and New York , which are on the eclipse's "path of totality" and offer the best views of the ring around the sun.

According to NASA, this year's eclipse is set to last three to four minutes, longer than the last solar eclipse , in 2017. People who miss this one will not be able to see another in the contiguous US until 2044 or 2045, the agency said.

Up to 3.7 million people are set to travel to the path of the eclipse, joining the 31 million people already living along the stretch, according to predictions by the eclipse-tracking website Great American Eclipse .

Visitors are expected to spend big: They'll shell out up to $1.6 billion on lodging, activities, food, and gas, the Texas economic consultancy Perryman Group estimated .

Here are some of the industries seeing big boosts from Monday's eclipse.

Hotels and Airbnbs book out

The budget hotel chain Super 8 has over 300 locations within the path of totality, per The New York Times. About 100 of these hotels are sold out for Sunday or Monday, according to the chain's website.

One two-star Super 8 branch in Grayville, Illinois, is advertising rooms for between $765 and $950 from Sunday through Tuesday. On most days, the rooms typically cost $80, the Super 8 website shows.

Higher-end hotels are seeing similar spikes. A JW Marriott in Dallas listed a standard room for $1,039 for Sunday night. It typically costs between $355 and $482, the website said.

Related stories

Visitors are flocking to Airbnbs, too. As of March 25, occupancy rates for April 7 soared to 88% across 110,000 active listings on the path of totality, according to the vacation-rental-data company AirDNA.

The biggest glasses manufacturer has sold out

People can permanently damage their eyesight by looking straight into the sun during an eclipse, so NASA recommends specific solar-filtering glasses .

The eye-protection guidelines translated into huge sales for some glasses manufacturers.

Tennessee's American Paper Optics, the country's largest producer of protective eclipse eyeglasses, has seen a big jump in sales compared with the total eclipse in 2017.

The company started taking eclipse orders two years in advance, John Jerit, the company's founder, told NPR on Friday. The glasses sold for $1.50 to $2 apiece.

"We've shipped already about 70 million glasses, and I suspect I'm going to approach right at 75 million by the time next week comes," Jerit said.

American Paper Optics sold out of glasses this year after producing about 30 million more glasses than it did for the total solar eclipse in 2017, according to a sales figure on the company's site .

Eclipse skydiving attracts thrill seekers

Some adrenaline junkies seeking a novel vantage point are planning to jump during totality to enjoy the darkness from the sky.

A group of 30 skydivers plans to jump in northern New York on Monday, Fox News reported . Tickets for the dive, hosted by the local company Skydive the Falls, sold out in seven minutes after they went live in January.

"We're going to jump one minute prior to totality, so we can enjoy totality in full under our parachutes," Jason Berger, a co-owner of Skydive the Falls, told Fox News.

A similar event in Dallas sold out of its $250 eclipse skydive tickets, too.

For sun observers on the ground, restaurants are making the most of the celestial phenomenon with eclipse menus and specials. Establishments like Smoothie King, Applebee's, and Sonic are offering special eclipse-themed smoothies and margaritas, as well as "blackout" drinks to mark the occasion.
