The best place to kayak in Maine is the Spur Wink River . The river starts in the Wells River and ends up in the Penobscot Bay of the Gulf of Maine. It’s one of the most popular rivers for kayaking in Maine because it has a moderate current and offers plenty of scenery, including views of an old lighthouse from different perspectives.

The water here is crystal clear and mild, making it an ideal spot for beginners and experts alike. The river has been named one of the best places in the world for kayaking by National Geographic magazine.

2. Presumscot River:

The Presumscot River is one of the best places to kayak in Maine. It’s a beautiful river, with lots of wildlife and great scenery. You can go for a hike on the Appalachian Trail by either starting at the Sugarloaf Mountain Trailhead or the Border Road Trailhead. The latter is slightly more challenging, but it’s closer to the river and has better views.

The trailhead for the Appalachian Trail is only about a mile long, so you don’t have to worry about getting lost or too tired. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, so you can enjoy your time on the water as long as you like!

3. Androscoggin River:

The Androscoggin River is a great place to kayak! This is a Class I river in Maine, so it’s safe and fun. The river is located in the Midwest region of the state, and it flows from its headwaters in Oxford County to its mouth at the Piscataquis River (it also has tributaries like the North Branch Androscoggin River). It’s a few miles long, mostly in Oxford County.

While kayaking on this river, you’ll see some beautiful scenery: the river banks are lined with forests and ponds, and many islands are along its length. You can take your time exploring these islands once you reach them—they’re all different sizes and shapes, which makes them fun to explore!

4. Dead River:

The Dead River is a great choice if you’re looking for a place to kayak in Maine. The river offers a few different trips, including an upstream and downstream cruise and a short trip to the island at the base of the falls. This trip gives you plenty of time to explore the area and enjoy its beauty. Besides, the river is home to a variety of wildlife, and the scenery along its banks is gorgeous.

5. Northern Forest Canoe Trail:

Northern Forest Canoe Trail is a 740-mile canoe trail that runs through the northern forest of Maine. It’s an easy paddle, with plenty of places to stop and enjoy nature. You’ll see waterfalls, ponds, and birds in the trees as you make your way along this scenic path.

The trail has three different sections:

1) The West Branch section starts at the old Piscataquis River bridge and runs north. This section is flat and easy to paddle, but it does have some rocks along the way.

2) The East Branch section starts at Owls Head Lighthouse and runs east. This section has more elevation changes than the West Branch section, so paddling is a little more challenging. There are also more rocks in this area than before!

3) The Middle Branch section starts at Old House Point Lighthouse and runs south into Otter Stream (which connects with Goose Cove). This section has more elevation changes than either of the other two sections combined!

6. Kenne Bunk Pond:

Kenne Bunk Pond is a beautiful, pristine lake in Maine that’s perfect for kayaking. The pond is relatively small but makes up for its calm waters and scenic surroundings. It’s also home to quite a few birds, including herons and bald eagles, so you might even see some wildlife on the water!

This area of Maine has plenty of other things to keep you busy. Head to the nearby town of Livermore Falls or rent a cabin at one of the nearby lakeside resorts if you’re looking for more adventure than just kayaking can offer.

7. Songo River:

The Songo River is a small river that runs through the town of Windham, Maine. The Songo River has many things to offer kayakers, including great fishing and wildlife-watching opportunities.

The Songo River offers both flatwater and whitewater kayaking options. Flatwater kayaking is good for beginners or people who want some quiet time on the water with their friends or family members. Whitewater kayaking allows you to experience more excitement when paddling down rapids and rivers with your friends or family members!

If you’re looking for something more challenging than flatwater kayaking, we recommend trying out some of the whitewater rivers in the area!

8. Webhannet River and Wells Harbour:

The Webhannet River is a great place to kayak in Maine. It’s got a lot of good access points, and it’s also relatively flat, which means it’s great for novice paddlers. You can spend your time exploring the river or just floating along. There are also some excellent campsites along the river for those who want to spend more time off the water.

Wells Harbour is an excellent destination for paddling enthusiasts as well. This area has many different types of kayaking; from touring over sandbars to surfing waves, you’ll have plenty of options here. There are several different campsites available for overnight stays, as well as free parking for vehicles at each site.

9. Penobscot River:

The Penobscot River offers various activities for visitors, from hiking and biking to fishing and boating. Back river is one of the most popular destinations in this area because it offers some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the state.

You can spot bald eagles soaring above you or hear bullfrogs croaking at night. Plus, you’ll be able to see some of the famous falls that dot the landscape around here—including Great Falls, Little Falls, and Androscoggin Gorge Falls!

If you’re more interested in getting out on the water than getting off it, Back River also provides boat rentals to take your kayaks with you wherever you go!

10. Damariscotta River:

This beautiful river is located in the town of Damariscotta, and it offers a number of different options for kayakers. You can go on day trips or make the trip a multi-day adventure.

The Damariscotta River has a wide variety of flora and fauna, including beaver dams and muskrat houses. You’ll also see several birds that live near this river—including ospreys, eagles, hawks, herons, and ducks—making it an ideal spot for birdwatching enthusiasts! Many fish live in the Damariscotta River, including bass and salmon trout.

While you’re out on your kayak trip down this river, don’t forget to stop at one of the local shops for some delicious treats!

11. High Land Lake:

High Land Lake is a beautiful lake in Maine that is perfect for kayaking. It has dozens of campsites, and every one of them is beautiful. The water is clear and clean, and there are plenty of places to stop and explore on your way down the lake.

If you’re planning on kayaking in High Land Lake, you should bring a canoe or kayak with you! There are many sections of the lake where the water is shallow enough to paddle through without getting wet , which makes it easier to get around.

There’s also an area called “the falls” with a much deeper section of water than most other parts of the lake. It’s fun to see how far you can go before hitting bottom!

12. Moose Head Lake Greenville:

Moose Head Lake is one of Maine’s most popular spots for kayaking, with plenty of places to launch from and explore. The lake is also home to various wildlife, including bald eagles, moose, and beaver.

One of the best places to kayak in Moose Head Lake is Moosilauke Mountain Trail, which provides access to the lake’s northern shore. The trail begins at the Moosilauke Lodge and ends at Buckfield Beach, where you’ll have access to sandy beaches and rocky areas where you can view wildlife.

Another great place for kayaking is Round Pond State Park on the southern shore of Moose Head Lake. Round Pond has an impressive waterfall that flows down into the lake. You can also hike along this trail to get up close with beautiful views of Moose Head Lake!

13. Mere Point:

Mere Point is one of Maine’s most popular spots for kayaking. It’s located near Lubec, a great way to experience the area’s natural beauty. This is one of the best places in Maine to kayak because there are plenty of opportunities to see whales, seals, and other wildlife. You can also see Bald Eagles nesting on the cliffs above the water. The water is calm and clear here, which makes it easy to see all kinds of marine life that come up close.

The best time to visit Mere Point is during low tide because you can get a better view of the land below without worrying about getting too close to cliffs or rocks as you explore deeper into the bay. When exploring Mere Point, head to nearby Lubec Island Lighthouse for an even more picturesque view!

14. Goose Rock Beach:

Goose Rock Beach is a hidden gem. It’s a narrow strip of sand that runs along the coast of Maine and is one of the most beautiful places in the state.

The beach is perfect for paddling, but there are plenty of other activities you can also do here. You may want to visit Goose Rock itself if you can find it—the rock is famous for being one of several sites where geese roost. They’ll stand on top of their rock and look out over the ocean if you’re lucky enough to see them. You’ll also notice some trails winding through the trees near Goose Rock Beach; these are popular with hikers and bikers who come here to escape city streets and traffic jams.

The Rachel Carson Wild Life Refuge is a place you’ll want to visit if you’re looking for a place to kayak. The refuge is home to various wildlife and features stunning views of the surrounding area. You can even see puffins!

Mount Desert Island is experiencing a major housing crisis. Post pandemic we lost most of our staff housing, as these properties were sold to those seeking the paradise, we all enjoy here. This has caused my team to be understaffed for the past few seasons. Explore the salty side of Maine

Nautical By Nature, LLC is a small guide service providing custom private sea kayak tours exploring the coast of Maine.  My wife and I keep our operation small with no store front, so we have no need to sell our tours to the max capacity allowed by the state.  Providing only private charters makes it easier to meet, if not exceed expectations. 

Our goal is to share the very best parts of the coast, which are a little off the beaten path.    We would love to take you out of the hustle and bustle of some of the busier parts of the coast to some of our favorite spots which are equally, if not more visually striking, and with more opportunities to see wildlife.

Most of our preferred Tour locations are only about an hour from Bar Harbor, if that is where you are staying.  We truly  feel that the drive will be well worth the time: and can be an enjoyable undertaking on its own.  To quote one of our clients from the 2020 season, "this is the Maine I was expecting " We are excited for  you venture out with Nautical by  Nature, you will visit beaches and harbors that will show you why the sign that welcomed you to Maine said, "The way life should be."

At Nautical By Nature, we have a strong commitment to protecting and preserving the wild places in Maine and all over the world.  We adhere to 'Leave No Trace' principles.  We are also very grateful for the work being done by local conservation organizations and support their mission to conserve and protect wild lands.  Many of the areas we visit would be inaccessible  without their good work.  In addition to leaving the ocean and beaches cleaner than we find them, we also donate a portion of our profits each year to help fund the efforts of The Maine Island Trail  Association (MITA) , the Maine Coast Heritage  Trust (MCHT) , and the Island Heritage  Trust (IHT)   More information about these great organizations can be found on our  resources page.

Your Guide To Kayak Maine + The Best Maine Kayak Tours and Rentals

Kayaking is a great way to explore the Maine outdoors by water. Whether paddling along the rocky shoreline, in a tidal creek, on a lake, pond, fast or gentle flowing river, you will soon leave the hustle and bustle behind, and find yourself immersed in a world of tranquility, beauty, and adventure.

Kayaking is an environmentally friendly way to see the natural beauty that Maine is famous for, its quiet and low impact on the beauitful surroundings. Kayaking allows you to see birds, wildlife, and nature at its purest.

White water kayaks  are short and very maneuverable. Touring Kayaks are long and fast, and offer lots of storage space to bring supplies for longer trips. Fishing Kayaks are very stable, and include fishing equipment such as rod holders and anchors. If you’re not sure what’s best for you, ask your kayak outfitter.

The possibilities for Kayaking in Maine are endless. You can rent a Kayak, take a guided scenic tour or arrange for a multi-day trip with overnight camping. You decide how adventurous you want to be. Most kayak rental companies also have available canoes and stand up paddleboards for rent by the day or the hour. SUP, aka: stand up paddleboard, is all the rage right now. Some people prefer the traditional posture of a canoe over a kayak, while sports enthusiasts enjoy the challenge and dynamic standing and surfing style paddling of Stand Up Paddleboarding.

Paddling along on a coastal tour, you’re likely to see birds, seals, and beautiful scenery. For a quieter paddle, try one of the many inlets and tidal rivers that line the coast, or venture further inland to one of  Maine’s many Lakes  and rivers.

What to Bring Kayaking

You’ll want to check with your outfitter to see if they have any particular requirements, but generally you’ll want to be sure to bring the following for you kayak adventure on the Coast of Maine…

• Plenty of water
• Sun block and a hat
• A snack or protein bar for longer paddles
• Water shoes if you plan on getting out along the way

You may also want to bring a camera. Make sure you have a dry bag to put it in, to avoid damage from water. Most outfitters offer these at no extra charge.

Our guided multi-day trips offer a chance to journey by sea kayak along the Maine Island Trail , a water trail tracing the length of the Maine coast.  All trips are led by licensed Maine guides with abundant knowledge about the history and ecology of the region. Many of our trips venture into the islands of Casco Bay, adjacent to Portland, and we also offer trips further north in Muscongus Bay, the midcoast region, the Acadia region and along the “Downeast” coast.

We love to take paddlers out to the lighthouses, open ocean, and dramatic cliffs nearby. We keep our group sizes small - well under the state mandated ratios - to ensure your safety and enjoyment. Each trip is tailored to the interests and abilities of our guests, tempered by the dynamics of the weather, the bay and nearby open ocean. Having an archipelago of islands as our base gives us lots of options for the day's adventure. Casco Bay is a world-class kayaking venue; starting your trip from Peaks Island allows you closer access to the best it has to offer. Our fleet of high end expedition-style single sea kayaks accommodates all sizes and abilities.  Kayak hull shape matters - different boats are suited to different people. We are passionate about giving you the best experience in your kayak as is possible. All of our sea kayaks are sit-in, have rudders or skegs, and at least two bulkheads. Our kayaks are a minimum of 16' long so you can enjoy the “glide” of kayaking and travel further, faster, and with less effort. We also have stable, sturdy double kayaks available if you prefer to paddle tandem.

As I told Joe, my adventure eyes are always bigger than my nerves! I was so excited about the ocean kayaking but as he started orienting us, I got a little nervous that it would be too much for my landlubber husband and me. But Joe immediately put us at ease - offering reassurance, many helpful suggestions, and explained each step of the trip. Never in my wildest dreams did I envision, kayaking past a bird-filled island, right up to a lighthouse, and even enjoying a few minutes on a quickly disappearing island. Started out with a guided full day tour the first day and then rented equipment for the following 2 days. The equipment was high quality and Joe, the owner/guide, was very helpful with local area information and pointers. We are experienced paddlers (IPP3 / BCU3*) and have paddled all over the world. We really enjoyed all the days we had on the water, with beautiful scenic nature and lots of wildlife. Can warmly recommend come paddling in Casco Bay!

Our guides did a fabulous job showing us some beautiful parts of the harbor. Growing up in Maine, I was taught about the forts in the harbor but never thought I'd be able to walk around Fort Gorges. We saw a seal, two active Osprey nests (6 birds total), and an Eider. We couldn't have had nicer weather. Our lead guide and owner of the enterprise (sorry Sir, your name has escaped my vacation memory) was skilled in his craft and entertaining in presentation. This was a highlight of our 10 days in Maine.

This half-day trip is a great way to see some local wildlife and to get a glimpse of some of the beautiful small islands of Maine. Exploring Gorges Fort added a bit of history, as well, to the natural beauty of the day. Our guides, Jim and Lee , were outstanding and we enjoyed every moment of the tour. They and Joe provided a good orientation before departure and made sure everyone was equipped to enjoy the experience.

Joe and team were excellent in ensuring we had a great experience. The equipment was clean, comfortable and safe. The group was split into 2, which meant a personalized tour where we could choose where to go. Joe - the owner- was a calm, charming, attentive and vigilant guide. He made sure everyone in the group was comfortable with what we were doing, while keeping his eyes on the water for the sea conditions and possible wildlife sightings (we saw porpoises, a seal and lots of birds - some even rare). Joe shared interesting stories and facts, and also took time to advise on good paddling techniques. Top marks for a great trip! Can thoroughly recommend Maine Island Kayaks. I'll be back next time I'm in the area.

Nothing to improve really. You made it very easy - from the clear instructions on the website and upon booking, meeting us with a smile straight off the ferry, the bathroom stop beforehand, the safety talk and preparations before getting in the boats, and the good care during the tour. The only comments I can think of are 1) I couldn't find anywhere in the info what time it was likely to finish (although it's advertised as a half day, so I could make an assumption). 2) You spoke quite fast during the safety talk. Talking a little slower may help people take in the information better.

We took a half-day trip (about 2.5 hours total) from Peaks Island over to Fort Gorges and back by a different route. Ideal weather, calm conditions, safe guiding, and a good time was had by all. The fact that you have to take the ferry boat over to Peaks to join the trip is *not* a drawback, since you get the fun of the ferry boat ride and a chance to visit the shops and eats on Peaks. Overall, a great way to get on the water!

We had a big group (16), but Joe, Mitch and Zeke seemed to have no problem keeping us together and offering instruction as needed. Joe’s the head guy, and gave an initial briefing to outline the trip and stress safety. Nice boats, too. A very enjoyable 3 hours.

The bets kayaking instruction I ever got had people practice paddling while onshore - to get the feel of using your core, rather than arms, to do the work. You might consider using a few minutes upfront to do that and help people avoid next-day soreness.

We were a family of four and this was an excellent activity to do as a family and a great way to see different parts of the bay and other small islands. We enjoyed the whole experience from the time our guide met us at the Casco Bay Lines drop off point to the very end. The guides were professional, informative, fun, and very enthusiastic about what they do. We then enjoyed getting some lunch and took a bike ride around the island. A great way to enjoy Peak Island for the day.

• 7 of the Most Charming Small Towns to Visit in Maine

It is no coincidence that the northeastern state of Maine , the epicenter of New England charm, is one of the most popular destinations to visit in the US. Its history dates back to before European settlement , with villages and towns popping up in the time slots along its jagged, irregular coastline.

The charming town of Norway is the center for outdoor fun in inland Maine, with places like Ordway Grove to hike among the ancient oaks and pines, as well as boating and local farm visits. Prior to the settlers and even before the Abenaki Tribes sought out the area, it was home to the Maritime Archaic people, a highly advanced ancient civilization 5,000 years ago, also named Red Paint for their distinct red ochre-painted graves. Today, the mile-long Bucksport Waterfront Walkway is exactly what city dwellers and families desire on a seaside getaway with gorgeous views of the Penobscot River year-round, like during the Maritime Film Festival in November. The Unique Rock Shop is a little hidden gem to buy one for yourself, while the Lighthouse Arts Center on Main Street represents 100 artists.

Overlooking Lake Pennesseewassee (Norway Lake), Roberts Farm Preserve is a great family pursuit for this summer to go hiking or biking, and, in the winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Norway hosts a triathlon along the five-mile-long lake annually in July and a snowshoe festival in the winter, when visitors can also go ice skating on the lake. Don't miss Ordway Grove for an easy hike among the ancient oaks and pines or the 4.4-mile Witt’s End Trail through wetlands and woods. Featuring period architecture from the 19th and 20th centuries with placards about each building’s historical significance, the fun-filled downtown hosts locally owned shops, bakeries, a brewery, and restaurants that give five-star city spots a run for their money!

Orono may seem like an ordinary college town, but it is so much more than that. Full of charming history, the town was named after Chief Joseph Orono, the great-grandson of Chief Madockawando and a leader of the Penobscot Nation, who supported the American colonists against the British during the American Revolution and died in 1801, five years before the town was incorporated. He is depicted on the seal of the town, still home to representatives of the Penobscot Nation, where culture lovers can honor the chief's life and accomplishments at the Wabanaki Center.

Located partially on Pushaw Lake, Orono is a family destination that feels like a place where you belong right away, according to visitors. Feel young again along the welcoming campus grounds of the university, home to the Maine Bound Adventure Center, which offers kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals. Home to quaint cottages and small businesses like the Nest, a local favorite cafe, just across, the Stillwater River Trail offers a four-mile loop hike for the outdoorsy. Swan's Island

"Six miles east of ordinary" may be an odd tagline, being six miles northeast of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park , which features 7,000 acres of extraordinary coastal scenery. Nevertheless, this pretty island, home to roughly 350 year-round residents, feels like a fishing community in a time warp, with life revolving entirely around the sea. Truly "the salt of the earth," with highlights like a classic lighthouse at the tip of Hockamock Head, some 4.2 miles from the ferry terminal, Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse was built in 1872. Automated in 1975, it welcomes visitors with history, art exhibits, and a tower to climb up 35 feet high for tremendous views.

Nearby, there are 1.8 miles of hiking trails, like the Long Point Beach Trail, with views of the surrounding islands on clear days. Only accessible by ferry service or private vessel, Swan's Island is simply a paradise for lazy strolls and lounging at the beach in the scenery that never gets old. Home to four public beaches, one store, a museum, and a library, the town also offers a variety of boat charters and eco tours, while the "quarry pond" features fresh waters for a dip. A variety of vacation homes are available from locals on Airbnb, or opt for the family-friendly Harbor Watch Inn.

Bucksport, Kennenbunkport, and Swan's Island feature lighthouses, and the latter is just six miles away from Mount Desert Island, home to 7,000 acres of wildly beautiful Maine coastline. Former SEC quarterback found safe after missing for hours in Gulf of Mexico

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. ( WJHG /Gray News) - A former college quarterback has been located after reportedly going missing on a fishing trip.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office updated its search Thursday evening, saying a missing kayaker, identified as Chris Smelley, has been found safe.

According to the sheriff’s office, Smelley went fishing in a blue and black kayak around 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico near Grayton Beach and did not return.

Smelley is currently the head football coach at Sylacauga High School in Alabama. The 37-year-old also played quarterback for the University of South Carolina from 2006-2008.

Authorities did not share any further immediate information about how he was found.

Earlier in the day, the sheriff’s office reported it had jet skis in the water off Grayton Beach and the United States Coast Guard was notified.
