During a recent interview with CNN, Saudi Arabia's Prince Sultan bin Salman announced that the Kingdom would begin issuing tourist visas in 2018, among other reasons to reduce the dependence of the Saudi economy on oil. Although Saudi authorities had previously spoken about possibilities for non-Muslim tourism in country (namely, a "special tourist zone" on the Red Sea), this announcement reflected an opening of the country at large to foreign travelers.

Now that tourist travel is allowed to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia it's time to start planning your trip. Below, you'll find a list of Saudi Arabia's most amazing tourist attractions.

The birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, Mecca has long been a popular destination for Muslim tourists . In fact, every Muslim who has the financial means to do so is required to make a pilgrimage to Mecca ( known as the "Hajj" ) once in his or her lifetime, according to the Quran.

Non-Muslims are prohibited from entering city of Mecca as well as the area around the iconic Kaaba stone.

Riyadh's Kingdom Centre Tower

Kingdom Centre is such an iconic symbol of Saudi Arabia's capital that an emoji version of it shows up when you say you're "Traveling to" Riyadh on Facebook. A shopping mall and residential complex that's also home to an observatory (which is not surprising, since it rises 992 feet above the ground), Kingdom Centre is actually only the third-tallest building in Saudi Arabia, in spite of its fame. 

Certainly, it will be a great place to begin any Riyadh city trip once Saudi Arabia opens up to tourists, offering visitors both figurative and literal perspective on the bustling national capital of 5.2 million people, which is also home to the Kingdom's main airport. It's easy to see the observation deck becoming Saudi Arabia's most popular selfie spot!

Empty Quarter

Although the vast majority of the aptly-named "Empty Quarter" technically belongs to Saudi Arabia, there are no borders here—it's just sand, after all, with nothing different about it between Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. On the other hand, the Empty Quarter (which is known in Arabic as Rub' al Khali) is far from boring, whether you come on a camel safari, to drive 4x4s through the dunes or to visit with the nomadic tribes who call this seemingly inhospitable place home.

A number of places in Saudi Arabia are accessible to independent travelers once visas start being issued, but this is probably a destination for which you'll want to have a guide. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to find your way out of sand dunes alone? To say nothing of all the rodents and scorpions who call this area home—it's best to set up camp according to the recommendations of someone who knows the lay of the land!

Coral Houses of Jeddah

The Red Sea port of Jeddah is known as a relatively liberal and open city; from lax enforcement of the country's strict rules about female attire, to the generally laid back attitude of the people. In addition to a great vibe, Jeddah offers one awesome tourist attraction in particular: The so-called "Coral Houses," built out of blocks of coral harvested from the sea.

They're currently in a state of disrepair (almost notoriously), but are still a worthwhile destination.

Lost City of Mada'in Saleh

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of decades, you've heard of the Lost City of Petra (which is no longer "lost" at all) in Jordan. What you might not realize is that Saudi Arabia is home to a city that's both similar in design and origin, dating back to the Nabatean Kingdom of the 1st century.

Although many Saudis enjoy visiting Madai'in Saleh, it maintains a low profile among foreigners, which means that you should be able to enjoy a trip here in relative peace. Certainly, it will take a long time before Mada'in Saleh reaches the "tourist trap" status of Petra, if that ever happens at all. 

Prophet's Mosque in Medina

Mecca is the highest-profile holy place in Saudi Arabia, but if you read Islamic history, you'll realize that Medina is also quite important—the Prophet Muhammad taught here for a number of years after he came of age in Mecca, and before he returned to the city in his later life. The most stunning site in Medina is the mosque of Al-Masjid an-Nabawī, whose origins date back to the year 622.

As is the case with Mecca, non-Muslims are currently prohibited from setting foot in central Medina.

The stealthy revolution in saudi arabia will change the world.

We all forget that, in the latter part of the Cold War, a US-led campaign encouraged the Saudis and Gulf states to spend money building Islamic-schools aka Madrassahs around the Muslim world. The aim? To counteract Moscow's widespread soft-power influence in youth-movements and colleges of the anti-colonialist/imperialist anti-western variety. The Saudi/US campaign succeeded all too well in countries like Turkey and Pakistan, and elsewhere, ultimately shifting the balance of power against the Soviets in Afghanistan by funding and training the Mujahideen resistance. But, for reasons still obscure, Washington didn't lean on the Saudis to halt the Wahhabist momentum once the Soviet union collapsed. Radical Islam had gained purchase as the dominant kinetic Muslim ideology. From it came Al Qaeda, ISIS, the Taliban and numerous splinter terror groups. Iran got in on the act, despite being Shiite and anathema to the orthodox Sunni establishment, simply by usurping the political ends of the movement.

Which is where we are today - except for one fundamental difference. The Gulf has changed and Saudi Arabia is following suit. At a certain point, while the Saudis could still depend on oil, the smaller Gulf states decided their future lay in developing their economy as a travel hub and conference center. Real estate boomed in tandem to accomodate the transformation - not just to create hotels but as investment draws for all the grey money sloshing around the Mideast. In essence, the Gulfies got out of the global politics game. They had to. No tourist attraction survives with a fire-breathing puritan religious image. But to move from Islamism to conference centers to full-blown tourism - a lot of internal re-invention was needed.

For a start, the local population needed to embrace a thorough social realignment. Their womenfolk started working, meeting foreigners, meeting men outside the family and the like. Moreover, cultural life and night life had to change. This was not, in the past, a geographical area abounding with culture - or entertainment. At first, the conference center economy drew vast numbers of foreign men in need of entertainment after work hours at conferences. There was little to do. Ubiquitous hotel discos with loitering 'Russian' escorts became the norm - not a good longterm option. Women conferencers felt uncomfortable. Wives around the world discouraged their men from attending. The area got a bad reputation for being a Mideastern equivalent of Las Vegas.

It was time to move on to the next stage - shopping, culture, full blown tourism including female tourists and families. And so, international museums were encouraged to create extensions there. New museums devoted to Islamic Art went on global purchasing sprees. Top designer brands opened branches. The beach economy expanded, videos of hang-gliders floating above skyscrapers proliferated - a sort of artificial glamorous lifestyle was implanted and took hold after a fashion. The Saudis watched on the sidelines. But they had internal obstacles, namely the custodianship of Mecca, religious imperatives, a powerful phalanx of Wahhabi clerics symbiotic with the indigenous culture of the Saudi tribes since the 1700s. The isolated desert settings, the identity shaped by the elements - the flinty, puritan, patriarchal ethos seemed bred-in-the-bone. How could it ever change? The Saudis had their own authentic cultural identity and it was retarding progress beyond oil wealth. Lots of money without social evolution.

Enter Prince Mohammed Bin Salman , the de facto Saudi ruler with iron control for some ten years now. (Hereafter known as MBS). These days if you meet anyone, especially anyone female, from Saudi or doing business there, you'll find them surly and rebellious that the world identifies MBS with the endless war in Yemen, the assassination of journalist Jamal Kashoggi in Turkey, the detaining en masse of his local rivals and the like. Instead, or simultaneously, MBS arguably deserves a reputation for having launched the rebirth of Saudi Arabia on a new future freed of its historical shackles and ossified social hindrances. Essentially, what MBS has done is to initiate a socio-cultural revolution while freezing all political liberalization. Hence for example women can now drive cars solo but women's rights political activists are liable to get jailed. Meanwhile, the state is funding young Saudi women to study classical music in the UK, developing a vibrant fashion industry while conducting its own fashion week and opening up its vast desert hinterlands to international tourism with emphasis on regional attractions and identities. And, of course, the star-studded soccer league headed up by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Most observers in the west simply cannot fathom the multiplex contradictions in the scenario. In fact, taken as a whole, it fits precisely into Islamic tradition going back to the Middle Ages. Saudi Arabia Spent $500B to Build a Futuristic City in the Desert, and Now Reality Is Setting In

Saudi Arabia's plan to spend over $500 billion on a futuristic, eco-friendly city in the desert may not turn out quite like it was once envisioned.     

The reality of such an extensive financial project has begun to cause concern among investors as work slows down and the Saudi Government is yet to announce Neom’s 2024 budget. 

The Futuristic City Shrinks in Size

At the core of the Neom, an extensive development project launched by Crown Prince Bin Salman, is a futuristic city once predicted to run over 105 miles long known as The Line.

However, the plans for the desert metropolis appear to have been scaled back, with rumors suggesting the city will only stretch for a mile and a half by 2030. 

Scaling Down on Prince Mohammed’s Project

Prince Mohammed, the son of the King of Saudi Arabia, Salman, is the face of Neom and the wider Vision 2030 project, which aims to restructure the country to ensure everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

The prince has claimed he wants to revolutionize the Saudi nation and reduce its dependency on oil.

Neom’s Plans For the Future

Alongside the megacity, Neom’s other projects include an extensive industrial city, large ports, and tourism developments.   

The region is even set to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at Torjena, a luxurious mountain resort. 

$1.5 Trillion Project

Originally, Saudi Arabia pledged to commit at least 500 billion to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 project.    

Further investment coming from local and overseas investors brought the project budget to around $1.5 trillion. 

Work Began in the Desert Back in 2017

Work on the construction of the megacity began back in 2017.

However, reports suggest that excessive spending of the nation's money on The Line has been deemed controversial by high-ranking members of the Saudi government, per Bloomberg .    

Saudi Government Forced to Lower Estimations

Initial projections suggested that over 1.5 million people would already live in the futuristic city by 2030.  

However, due to recent financial problems, officials have projected that the city could house as few as 300,00 people. 

Saudi Government Yet to Announce 2024 Funding

One of the major problems surrounding the project is the kingdom's sovereign wealth fund has yet to approve Neom’s 2024 budget.     

According to the experts, the reality of spending trillions of dollars has begun to cause concern within the Saudi government.    

Companies Begin Pulling Workers From the Site

According to Bloomberg , as a result of the pullback, at least one company has begun dismissing its workers from the site.   

This appears to have happened after officials claimed that some of Neom’s other projects would be delayed well beyond 2030. 

More Time is Needed to Build

Speaking in December, Finance Minister Mohammed Al Jadaan said more time is needed to “build factories, build even sufficient human resources.”  

He continued , “The delay or rather the extension of some projects will serve the economy.”    

Further Problems Surrounding the Project

It's not just finances that have dampened the megacity; in recent years, several ethical issues have made headlines on numerous occasions.

From Prince Mohammed's alleged involvement in the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashogg i to rumors that Saudi officials killed several members of a tribe who refused to leave their ancestral lands, the entirety of the Neom project has been tainted long before it's even finished. 

US Journalist Shares Thoughts on Saudi City

In 2021, US journalist Robert Worth shared his thoughts on a video released by Neom which described the prospects of its futuristic city.   

“To watch the crown prince’s promotional video is to be immersed in a distinctively Saudi form of arrogance, blending religious triumphalism and royal grandiosity.”
