Ed Sheeran has announced that James Blunt will be his support act for the North American leg of his tour.

The pop star, whose new album Divide is currently sitting at the top of the charts, will take his good friend on the road with him this summer.

Confirming the news in a tweet on Monday, Sheeran wrote: “Happy to announce my opening act on my North American tour is @jamesblunt x.”

Sheeran will spent the next few months touring Europe and is expected to jet over to the US in June.

Blunt is also about to release his brand new album, The Afterlove, which features a number of tracks co-written by Sheeran.

Speaking about penning a song about his wife with his friend, Blunt told The Telegraph: “It’s a song I’m uncomfortable with for that reason.

“Ed said ‘Come on, it’s your job, you veil a lot of things,’ for that reason it was great to work with him.”

Blunt also recently admitted that their story about Princess Beatrice cutting Sheeran’s face with a sword was just a joke.

The British singer-songwriter claims that his friend accidently slashed open his own face and the pair fabricated the ‘fancy’ story as a joke.

“Ed was drunk, messing around, and he cut himself. We made a fancy story up; people fell for it. It was very embarrassing,” Blunt told Shortlist.

The Beautiful singer went on to say that the pair were surprised that people ‘fell for’ the story that the Princess cut Sheeran while pretending to knight him at a party.

When asked how much of the story was false, he said: “All of it. Apart from the actual scar. It’s bizarre that people fell for it."

Blunt, who is good friends with Sheeran laid the blame at his door, joking: "I blame him. He must be desperate – he’s trying to sell records.

"He cut himself and I just patched him up. It’s made him look prettier.”
