Although buying a Leap Visitor Card is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make the process more straightforward:

1. Why buying one makes sense

The Leap Visitor Card makes using public transport easier and cheaper. You buy a card for either 1, 3 or 7 days and you get unlimited travel. If you’re visiting Ireland on a budget , it’s both a time and money saver (as is the excellent Dublin Pass ).

2. Where you can get one

You can buy a Leap Visitor Card online, in Dublin Airport or in the city centre. Full list of places to get it can be found below.

3. How much it costs

There are three different options for the Leap Visitor Card:

  • 1 day (24 hours): €8.00
  • 3 days (72 hours): €16.00
  • 7 days (168 hours): €32.00

4. Where you can use it

The Leap Visitor Card can be used on Dublin City Bus services, the Luas (the tram that runs in the city), DART and Commuter Rail

5. How it works

To use your Leap Visitor Card, simply tap it off the validator when you’re getting on the bus or when you’re passing through the gates at the train station. More info on using it on each type of public transport below.

6. Where it isn’t valid

Leap Visitor is not valid on the Hop on/Hop off tour or other special tour services and cannot be used on Bus Éireann services.

Where you can buy a Leap Visitor Card

You can buy a Leap Visitor Card online or offline. Now, the online purchases come with a warning – the card gets delivered to your postal address.

So…  make sure to order it well in advance  to ensure that it arrives before you visit Dublin. You can also buy the card in person from a number of other places in Dublin:

Dublin Airport

You can buy the card from Wrights Airport Convenience Store (T1 Arrivals)

Here’s how to use the Leap Visitor Card on the bus, train and tram:

On Dublin Bus

Touch the card against the Leap Card Validator on the right-hand side as you enter the bus.

On the Luas (tram)

Touch the card off the Validator on the platform before you get on the tram and Touch Off when you get off the tram.

Best if you use the bus occasionally, with no regular travel pattern.

  • Please pay at the driver’s ticket machine.
  • To avail of this fare, simply present your Leap Card to the smart card reader on the right hand side as you enter the bus

Please make sure that you have the correct change to pay for your fare, drivers cannot accept Euro notes or give change.

Best if you use the bus regularly.

What is a Leap Card? A Leap Card is a reusable plastic smart card that can be used instead of paying with cash when travelling on all Dublin Bus services, including Xpresso and Nitelink, as well as Luas, DART and Commuter Rail services. Leap Cards can be bought online at www.leapcard.ie or at post point outlets around the City.

What is Travel Credit? Travel Credit works in a similar way to mobile phone credit. It is a cash value which you load onto the card and every time you use the card to travel, the cost of the journey is deducted. You can top-up your card online , at Leap Card Agents and at Luas and Irish Rail ticket machines.

What is Leap Card fare capping? Fare Capping is really easy. The Leap Card system caps the use of Travel Credit, so once you have taken trips using your Travel Credit that add up to the equivalent of the daily or weekly cap value, you can continue to travel as normal, but no further Travel Credit will be taken from your card.

The weekly cap is measured on a calendar week, starting on Monday and finishing on Sunday.

There is also a multi-operator cap if you are travelling on Dublin Bus, Luas and DART and Commuter Rail. The daily cap is €8.00 and the weekly cap is €32.00.

When the cap is reached you should continue to touch on as normal to have a valid ticket.

Any fares paid on Tours do not count towards the cap. Any fares paid for a travelling companion do not count towards the cap.

A Rambler ticket will suit you if you take at least 2 buses a day on the days you use the bus.

Ticket Type:

  • Valid for 5 or 30 days of unlimited travel for consecutive or non-consecutive days of travel.
  • Valid on Dublin Bus scheduled services including Nitelink and Xpresso (excluding Tours, Special Events and Private Contract services).
  • Rambler tickets can be bought and loaded on to a Leap Card  or at any               Postpoint Outlet
  • Register your Leap Card to protect against loss or theft.
  • If you are using your rambler ticket for the first time after 8pm the ticket machine will deduct travel credit from your card as you would not be getting the value of a full day on your rambler ticket. However, if you wish to activate one day on your rambler ticket after 8pm please go to the driver and ask them to take a day from your rambler ticket.

Perfect for the everyday commuter.

  • Valid for unlimited travel for 12 consecutive months.
  • Valid on Dublin Bus scheduled services including Xpresso and Nitelink (excluding Tours, Special Events and Private Contract services).
  • Available on a personalised Leap Card.
  • Valid for unlimited travel for 1 calendar month.
  • Available on a personalised Leap Card.

Fare Capping

Fare is fair – why pay more than you have to.

If you make lots of trips using your TFI Leap Card in any one day or one week (Monday to Sunday), on Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland Dublin City services, Luas, DART and commuter rail, we’ll automatically cap the price so you don’t spend any more than you need to. Once you hit the cap, you can travel for free for the rest of the day or week.

Please note: the weekly capping period starts at 4:30am on Monday to 4:29am the following Monday, the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over. A new daily capping period starts at 4:30am each day and the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over. When you’ve reached the daily/weekly cap, continue to touch on and touch off as normal. Travel credit will not be charged on the applicable services after you’ve hit a cap.

Click on the table below to see which cap value applies to you (fares valid from 9th of May 2022):

  • Dublin City Bus
  • DART & Commuter Rail

Please note:  Capping applies to Dublin City Bus scheduled services including Xpresso. It excludes Nitelink, Tours and Go-Ahead Ireland Commuter services. Capping only applies to journeys taken by the card holder.

Capping FAQs

What if i use more than one of the transport operators.

If you use a combination of Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland Dublin City services, Luas, DART and Commuter Rail, your travel credit use will be capped at the rate of the combined cap.

What time period constitutes a daily or weekly TFI Leap Card caps?

  • Daily Cap = A new daily capping period starts at 4:30am each day and the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over.
  • Weekly Cap (Mon-Sun) = the weekly capping period starts at 4:30am on Monday to 4:29am the following Monday, the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over.

What services are excluded from capping?

Nitelink, Tours and Go-Ahead Ireland Commuter services are excluded from capping.

How can I work out how much I’m saving?

The amount you save depends on how many trips you make and what those trips are. To work out your savings add up all your TFI Leap Card fares during a Daily or Weekly (Mon 4:30am – Mon 4:29am) time period and subtract either the Daily or Weekly Cap amount.

What if I use my TFI Leap Card with other transport service providers?

Your TFI Leap Card will calculate the total value of your journey in the relevant period & automatically apply the relevant cap.

How does capping work?

The system adds up how much travel credit you’ve used on the applicable services on a given day or week and then it stops taking any more once the applicable cap value is reached.

Is there zonal capping on Luas, DART/Commuter Rail?

No, the cap rates for Luas covers travel through all Luas zones. The Cap rates for DART/Commuter Rail cover travel through all DART/Commuter Rail stations in the short hop zone.

Why did the system deduct less travel credit than normal from my card?

You were probably near the applicable cap value for that day or week. For example, if you are using an adult card and have already spent €6.00 on Luas in a given day and you take one more journey, the system will only deduct €1 in order to bring you up to the cap level of €7. Once the Cap has been reached all further Touch On and Off values should be €0.00 and no further credit deducted from your card.

What happens when I reach a cap?

When you get close to a Daily or Weekly cap you will only be charged the amount to bring you up to the cap. After you have reached a cap you will be charged €0.00 for subsequent travel that day or over the Week (Mon-Sun).

What if I hit the Weekly Cap (Mon-Sun) before the Daily Cap?

Sometimes the Weekly cap (Mon – Sun) amount may be reached before the Daily cap. The Weekly cap (Mon – Sun) adds up the credit used each day and may be reached before the Daily cap towards the end of the week. In these cases the amount deducted from your card will stop at the Weekly cap (Mon – Sun) value. This is normal and all subsequent travel is free until the end of the week (Monday 4:29am). Once you reach the cap value, you are still required to Touch On and Touch Off as normal in order to have a valid ticket.

I’m unsure how much travel credit was deducted from my TFI Leap Card?

You can view your last 5 transactions on a Luas, DART or Commuter Rail Ticket Machine. You can view your last 50 transactions in your travel history if you sign in to your online account. It takes approximately 24 hours for your most recent transactions to appear in your online account.

The Leap Top-up App for Android also shows your last 5 transactions and how close you are to hitting a cap. The capping feature is currently not available for the IOS app.

Dublin public transport fares overhaul to see weekly Leap Card cap fall to €24

People travelling from commuter towns into capital are set to see cheaper public transport fares.

National Transport Authority (NTA) fares

Illustration: Paul Scott

People travelling from commuter towns into Dublin are set to see cheaper public transport fares, as part of changes planned by the National Transport Authority (NTA) for the second half of this year.

The introduction of a new standardised “Dublin commuter zone” will see cheaper fares for people travelling by bus or train from areas like Newbridge, Drogheda, Navan and Trim into Dublin.

The new fare system is expected to come into effect by the end of September and will see around 80 per cent of fares either remain the same or drop.

For example, the price of a single train journey from Drogheda, Co Louth to Dublin Connolly station will be halved from €11.95 to €6, while a single journey from Newbridge, Co Kildare to Dublin Heuston will drop from €10.85 to €6.

A new “Dublin city zone” for public transport fares will include areas such as Bray, Celbridge, Ashbourne, Lusk, and other areas within 23km from Dublin city centre. This zone broadly matches the areas covered by current Leap card 90 minute fares.

Fare bands

Source: NTA

The daily cap on the maximum cost of Leap card journeys within the Dublin city zone will be reduced from €8 to €6, while the most someone will pay weekly will be capped at €24, down from €32.

The cost of a short Leap card fare in Dublin will be increased by 20 cent up to €1.50 under the changes. A new €96 monthly Leap card ticket and a €960 annual ticket will also be available.

[  ‘About time fairer fares were introduced’: Guarded welcome for Greater Dublin transport changes  ]

The changes will see the roll-out of the Leap card to more commuter towns for public transport journeys. The Dublin commuter zone Leap card fares will replace Irish Rail’s “short-hop” paper tickets, as well as Bus Éireann’s eastern regional tickets, such as 10-journey paper tickets.

A bus ticket from Trim, Co Meath, to Dublin will be €2.05 cheaper, while a train ticket from Wicklow to Dublin Connolly will be €4.45 cheaper.

However, in some cases fares will increase as part of an effort to address price “anomalies” that exist. This will see the cost of a bus ticket from Cavan to Dublin increase by 21 per cent, from €9.45 to €11.40. A bus journey from Ratoath to Ashbourne, Co Meath will increase from €1.54 to €2.

Anne Graham, NTA chief executive, said in some instances, such as a bus journey from Cavan to Dublin, people would face a “significant fare increase”, due to current prices being “extremely low” in comparison to similar journeys. “These are anomalies that have been built up over years that we are trying to address,” she said.

Regular commuters heading to and from Dublin would see “very significant savings” on monthly and annual travel costs, she said.

Ms Graham said there would always be issues introducing a new “boundary” line to decide what areas were covered by either Dublin city or commuter fares. This would inevitably see journeys from one stop on a bus or train route having cheaper fares than a nearby stop further up the route, she said.

In a statement, the NTA said the overall changes would “represent a rebalancing of fares so that they are fairer and more consistent across the board”. The public transport authority said discounted Leap fares introduced in 2022, such as a €2 fare for journeys within 90 minutes in Dublin, would remain in place.
