Interview: Alex Porat Transforms from YouTube Cover Artist to Fresh Indie Pop Act Out of Toronto
A strong creative from the start, Alex Porat’s artist debut was worth the wait.
Stream: “never say ily again” – alex porat.
T oronto singer/songwriter, Alex Porat embraced the power of YouTube as an early teen and has developed into the buttery smooth indie pop artist she is today. Her music journey started on the internet back in 2010 when she released her cover of the hit “Airplanes” by B.o.B. and Hayley Williams. Similar to most teenagers at the time, Porat posted singing covers of her favorite songs and has received overwhelming feedback over the last 10 years. With over 100+ million views cumulatively on her YouTube channel, she now introduces her own music to the world, continuing to use the internet as a means to grow her fanbase.
I just really trusted the internet and saw it as an opportunity to share something with people. I had a feeling from such a young age that YouTube was going to be the thing that helped me in the end so I just never gave up on it.
YouTube has skyrocketed careers of household names today, providing new artists the capability to share their own sound and showcase their personality. New platforms surface every year, and serious artists must seize the opportunities each one provides to remain relevant and break into the competitive music industry. The internet will always be a vital part in artist creation, no matter what platform is hot at the moment. Transitioning from a cover artist to diving head first into her own career, does not come without hardships. However, with a 10 year build up, Porat seems to be doing everything right. Making her entrance with a go-getter and confident attitude.
With most of her past video content showcasing her irresistibly smooth voice backed by piano, she has developed a produced sound that is true to herself. Purposefully lyricism overtop beat driven and funky instrumentation are all part of her crafted songs, often highlighting the trials and truths of relationships. Collaborating frequently with Iris Kim, her visuals are just as appealing, applying mesmerizing yet simple themes and not taking life too seriously.
From having millions of views of her covers to now having millions of streams of her original music, Alex Porat is well on her way. Atwood Magazine talked with Porat about her early interactions with music, evolving into a recording artist, continuing to grow a fan base online amidst covid, and hints at her official debut project out 2021.
Since the internet is pretty much the reason for my existence I’m going to make the best use of it to continue connecting with my audience.”
A CONVERSATION WITH ALEX PORAT
Alex Porat : My Monday’s going well! Nothing too exciting happening this week. Will probably write more music, call family, and try to enjoy the weather while it lasts.
Alex Porat : Everyone in my family loves listening to music! I think they’ve all found their passion outside of music but they’re very supportive and are my number one fans. Also very critical of my music, so they’re great to lean on for opinions.
Alex Porat : It was definitely something I always dreamed about. Growing up I always reminded myself that I needed to be more realistic in my career goals but it never stopped me from exploring opportunities. Music was always in the back of my mind even when I was taking business and law courses in school.
Alex Porat : I actually posted my first cover in 2010. It’s a cover of “Airplanes” by B.o.B. and Hayley Williams with my brother rapping B.o.B.’s lines and the video is private now – thankfully. Ever since that video I kept posting but not as regularly as two years ago. I just really trusted the internet and saw it as an opportunity to share something with people. I had a feeling from such a young age that YouTube was going to be the thing that helped me in the end so I just never gave up on it.
Alex Porat : The end goal was always to share my original music but being so young and having little resources to do that I wanted to use covers as a stepping stone. I wanted to see if I could build an audience so that there would be people to listen to the original music. It’s been a very fun but tough transition. There’s definitely an invisible barrier for YouTubers who want to transition into music – however the ones that have been successful, like Conan Gray, give me hope! It’s a huge sense of relief being able to share original music because it feels more authentic to me as a person.
The end goal was always to share my original music, but being so young and having little resources to do that I wanted to use covers as a stepping stone.
Alex Porat : I’m honestly more grateful if anything because that was a pivotal moment for me mentally where I realized that having a career in music was obtainable and possible. It really motivated me to keep going and to not give up.
Alex Porat : I’ve heard a couple and it’s so nice to hear other people interpret the songs. Even getting DMs on Instagram from people saying how much they relate to the songs feels so surreal for me because that’s how I felt towards so many of the artists whose songs I covered.
Alex Porat : I think my sound is a result from so many phases in my life. I grew up listening to so much Whitney Houston and then later I was very influenced by the movies I would watch. I listened to a lot of Disney soundtracks throughout my childhood and later in high school I would sing in the musicals and choirs. All these things combined helped me find my sound. I gravitate towards melodies that sound emotional so in my own music I find that I naturally write like that as well.
Alex Porat : I co-wrote this track with my friends Jeff Hazin and David Charles Fischer aka DCF. This song was so fun to write because the driving force behind it was anger haha. For me personally, I go through phases after a break-up and this song was born out of that bitter phase where you feel like the world is ending. Saying “I’ll never say ‘I love you’ again” is so dramatic but also so relatable to that moment for me.
Alex Porat : Yes! It’s so amazing and easy working with her and it just feels like it was meant to be. I really trust her with the entire process and completely relate to her since she’s such a young and driven creative. It’s so exciting seeing our projects side by side and also looking forward to our next ones together because the visual is such a huge thing for me especially because of my experience with YouTube.
Alex Porat : 100%. It’s super important to me that I support other female creatives and have them be a part of my team. There have been efforts towards evening the playing field in the music industry but there’s still such a long way to go.
Alex Porat : Since the internet is pretty much the reason for my existence I’m going to make the best use of it to continue connecting with my audience. Some days I sit around at home and all I do is reply to DMs on Instagram that people send me. It’s been really nice connecting with everyone through that but I hope I’ll be able to see them in person one day.
Alex Porat : It’s weird to think how much time has passed since the start of the pandemic but I really feel like I’ve found a new comfort in recording vocals at home. All the vocals from my next single, in October, were recorded from my bedroom. Being able to get a vocal going has made collaborating over Zoom or FaceTime so much easier.
Alex Porat : Honestly, the first thing that comes to mind is live shows. It’s the one thing I’ve been looking forward to the most but the first single off the project came out right at the beginning of the pandemic so I knew pretty early on that live wouldn’t happen for a while. So now I’m just really looking forward to the day I get to perform the songs on a stage.
Alex Porat : The songs off this upcoming project – even though some of them aren’t out yet. It’s been such an interesting process telling these stories from my life and seeing how my brain changes after each one. I think each song has helped me grow from whatever thing I’m writing about. It definitely feels like a form of therapy.
Alex Porat : I think I define success as feeling more happiness than sadness. Still trying to figure that one out.
Alex Porat : I would say Drake and Jessie Reyez are big ones for me right now!
Alex Porat : I’m so emotional and I think that goes back to my childhood where I grew up listening to a lot of Whitney Houston. Her music really impacted the way I listen to other artists. I feel like because of her I can really feel an artist’s emotion through their melodies or lyrics.
Alex Porat : LOVE this question. It’s at four currently and I have one more on the way!

Izmailovo kremlin
Best place to buy souvenirs and see wooden Russian terems! Thanks for taking us there Alex!
Very informative and useful tour
The tour was fully tailored to our needs. The guide was like a duck to water in Moscow: when we needed taxi – it was there in a couple of minutes, tasty food in reasonably priced restaurants and best photo spots! Highly recommended!
Beer taste test in Moscow with Dana
It was just wonderful how Dana told us so much about beer! Russian quisine is something you definitely gotta try!
Private night tour by car
Decided to book a night tour as I was in Moscow on a business trip. Very convenient, the car arrived to my hotel in time with a peasant driver and a knowing guide. Thanks Alex and Yaroslav for the exciting evening in Moscow, really good
Day trip to Vladimir and Suzdal from Moscow
I had a fantastic day trip from Moscow visiting Vladimir and Suzdal. It was great getting outside of Moscow and seeing the original capitals of Russia! My guide/driver Alex was awesome and full of knowledge! He definitely made the trip interesting. I highly recommended taking this tour and seeing two towns of the Golden Ring!
Moscow in two days private sightseeing
Excellent walking tour of Moscow visiting a lot of historival places. The guide speaks very good Spanish and give a lot of information. We also had the oportunity to taste some of the Russian dishes. it is a top tour for who visit moscow for the first time.
Good Option
The guide Mr. Alexander Tomenko is very knowledgeable and has the ability to put the guest absolutely at ease. He is prompt and understanding of his guests needs and very patient. His guidance assisted us in understanding the significance of the locations we visited. We would recommend this company to any tourist for Moscow sightseeing.
Night tour in Moscow
Highly recommended, Alex was awesome and the tour suggests a car with a driver, which is super comfortable.
two day tour Moscow
Booked a two day tour with this company, Alexander was assigned to be my guide. Time and money well spent!
The tour was supposed to take 2 hours, but it was prolonged at my request for no extra charge! This is a photo from the outside, where we went to see the cathedral of Crist the Savior.
Group tour for a family of 10 in Moscow
Understanding all the difficulties of organizing an excursion for a big group I must admit that more.moscow level of organization is very good. We were provided a private van so the elderly had a chance to relax in case they’re tired. We weren’t able to complete the agenda within the allocated time so the tours were prolonged for free. Can recommend
Amazing walking tour of Moscow
We were in Moscow for just 1 day and decided to book a tour of Moscow. Our guide spoke really good English so did not only hear all about the history but also were able to ask him how life in Russia really was.
Kremlin tour
5 hour tour of Kremlin, managed to see everything in just one day. Very convenient.
Valspar Championship
Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead Course)
The bizarre name-related PGA Tour record that was tied this week
If you were scrolling through the Valspar Championship leaderboard on Thursday and felt like you saw a LOT of guys with the name Kevin, well, you were right.
Turns out, the seven Kevins—including Day 1 leader Kevin Streelman—tied a PGA Tour record. It also turns out the PGA Tour keeps track of such things. That's impressive in its own right.
RELATED: European caddie taunts Team USA with bib at Valspar
After a few people pointed out all the Kevins, the tour confirmed that it matched the mark. In addition to Kevin Streelman, you've got Kevin Kisner, Kevin Tway, Kevin Yu, Kevin Daugherty, Kevin Aylwin and Kevin Roy. Cue Catherine O'Hara in Home Alone : " KEVIN!!!!! "
View this post on Instagram A post shared by PGA TOUR (@pgatour)
If you scroll through the slides, you'll see a tweet from stats guru Justin Ray saying this tied the record from both the 2023 Fortinet Championship and 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. So this isn't a new thing. There are LOT of Kevins on the PGA Tour.
You'll also see in another slide a funny "Seventh Kevin" poster. That only the people who get that previous Home Alone reference will understand.
Anyway, good stuff. And may the best man Kevin win this week.

Will History Repeat Itself at Palos Verdes Golf Club?
Former usc player malia nam leads at palos verdes in 2nd career lpga tour start.
- Seri Pak Championship
- Tournament News
Two years ago, Marina Alex was a 90-1 (+9000) longshot to win the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, but she ultimately outlasted the No. 1 player in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, Jin Young Ko, on Sunday to earn the title. Last year, I was backing Georgia Hall (+2200) to take home the trophy at Palos Verdes Golf Club, and she finished second, one stroke behind Ruoning Yin.
The event has transitioned through a couple of sponsors, but once the LPGA Tour started coming to this venue, they just can’t stay away. The par-71 layout runs through the rolling hills of the Pacific Coast, and you can see the Pacific Ocean from 13 holes. At 6,258 yards, players think they can attack this course and overpower the terrain, but once they get on property, those game plans become delusions of grandeur. Severe elevation changes, 74 bunkers and incredibly small greens (3,952 sq/ft average) keep the golfers on tilt throughout the tournament.
After two events at Palos Verdes Golf Club, the average winning score is 13-under. Looking back at the last two top-10 finishers on the leaderboard, those players averaged even par on the four par 3s, even again on the 11 par 4s and under par on (4.5) on the par 5s. Yuka Saso, Georgia Hall, Patty Tavatanakit and Carlota Ciganda are the par-5 scoring leaders in the field. Do they have an edge? Well, there’s a little more to it.
Fairway accuracy is extremely important at Palos Verdes Golf Club. Ayaka Furue, Rose Zhang, Allisen Corpuz and Hyo Joo Kim are the best in the field those at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship. Zhang has not played here as a professional, but last March, she won a collegiate tournament at this venue, so watch out for the budding superstar as her name might slip your mind since she doesn’t have much LPGA Tour history here.
From the fairway, you can attack these green complexes much more efficiently. Your greens in regulation leaders in the field are Zhang, Lexi Thompson, Nelly Korda and Megan Khang. Khang is also third in the field for strokes gained tee to green and is the only player with two top-13 finishes in the field at Palos Verdes Golf Club. When you consider Khang, you also have to think of short-game acumen. She ranks third around the green alongside Tavatanakit, Korda, Khang and Ally Ewing. Each of the contenders will need a couple of timely up and downs over the weekend.
George Thomas and Billy Bell designed a fantastic test for the event that honors one of the LPGA’s finest champions, Se Ri Pak. Her 25 wins and five major championships set the standard for all future foreign players from both the Republic of Korea and Asia at large. Pak would have been a favorite to tame this track. Her incredible iron play reminds me of Alison Lee, Khang, Thompson and Nasa Hataoka, who can all create endless birdie opportunities on approach.
Expect another entertaining week alongside the Pacific Coast at Palos Verdes Golf Club, and make a pick or two of your own. A full set of selections can always be found at Read The Line. Hit the link below if you want to learn more about the course, field and conditions these women face each week on the LPGA Tour. It’s fun breaking down the action and trying to predict who will win!

Alex Baldwin officially launches PGA TOUR Americas with inaugural Bupa Championship

Korn Ferry Tour president eager for launch of new Tour

“This will be an exciting and important chapter in the history of the PGA TOUR and golf in the Americas,” Baldwin said during a press conference at PGA Riviera Maya at Tulum Country Club. “The Bupa Championship at Tulum will be the first tournament of the inaugural season of PGA TOUR Américas and we are very excited to get started here in Mexico.”
Beginning here and culminating in September with the Fortinet Cup Championship in Toronto, Canada, PGA TOUR Americas will stage 16 tournaments across seven countries, with stops in Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Canada and the United States.
“(PGA TOUR Americas) was an opportunity to create a more efficient system," Baldwin added about the concept behind the new Tour that emerged from the fusion of PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and PGA TOUR Canada. "In the past, both tours (in Latin America and Canada) were operated very differently, and we reorganized everything to give more value to the players, the sponsors, and also the fans who follow the Tour."
Naming the race for the season’s top prize, Fortinet will play a key role in PGA TOUR Americas. Throughout the 16-tournament schedule, players will be battling for the Fortinet Cup and 10 Korn Ferry Tour cards for the 2025 season. The Fortinet Cup was established two years ago on PGA TOUR Canada and with this new tour, it now reaches Latin American soil for the first time.
“At Fortinet, as a worldwide leader in cybersecurity, we are very pleased to expand our partnership with the PGA TOUR by sponsoring PGA TOUR Americas and the season-ending Fortinet Cup Championship,” said Andrés Carrasquilla, senior director, channel marketing, Fortinet Latin America and the Caribbean.
A PGA TOUR partner since 2017, sponsoring the Bupa Challenge series and then the Bupa Match Play tournament on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, Bupa is back as the title sponsor of the Bupa Championship at Tulum for the fourth consecutive year.
“We are excited about this new stage on PGA TOUR Americas,” said Yazmín Pérez Barrios, International Commercial Director of Bupa México. “We are committed to promoting health and sports in Mexico and we believe that events such as the Bupa Championship at Tulum make perfect sense to achieve our goal of helping people have longer, healthier and happier lives.”
The Bupa Championship at Tulum would not be what it is today without a course of the caliber that PGA Riviera Maya at Tulum Country Club provides. “This course was an incredible test for the past three years as host of the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica Tour Championship. I can't think of a better place to host the first PGA TOUR Americas tournament,” said Baldwin about the outstanding layout that winds through the dense jungle in the Mexican Caribbean.
Open in 2010, the 7,272-yard par-72 designed by Robert Trent Jones II was one of the toughest courses played on PGA TOUR Latinoamérica between 2021 and 2023. Its reputation will grow as one of the most demanding courses on PGA TOUR Americas.
“As PGA Riviera Maya and Tulum Country Club, we are excited to continue being an integral part of the professional golf landscape and to offer an exceptional experience for both players and fans at the 2024 Bupa Championship at Tulum,” said Sergio González, the tournament director at PGA Riviera Maya at Tulum Country Club.
The host venue is partnering with the Mexican Golf Federation and the PGA TOUR to stage the PGA TOUR Americas inaugural event. The tournament field will feature 144 players from 17 countries, including 10 Mexicans among 28 Latin players in action. The first round is scheduled to begin at 6:50 a.m. local time Thursday.

Director Guy Ritchie and producer Jerry Bruckheimer also attended the photo call.
Keep reading to find out more… Here’s the film’s synopsis: Based upon recently declassified files of the British War Department and inspired by true events, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an action-comedy that tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming. The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern Black Ops warfare.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare hits theaters on April 19 - watch the trailer here !
