The 9 Most Comfortable Flats to Wear Instead of Sneakers
Posted: April 1, 2024 | Last updated: April 2, 2024
Every fashion editor has an expansive collection of designer heels perched in the closet, but it’s the most comfortable flats that appear in the outfits we actually wear. I relied on my most comfortable flats for work, travel, and everywhere else even before ballet flats had returned to the mainstream on runways from Miu Miu to Tory Burch. I discovered my most-worn pairs through years of professional research and plenty of personal shopping—and found that pairs from Mansur Gavriel, Eledera, and Margaux look polished while fitting like they're custom-made.
Rothy’s chief product and merchandising officer Heather Archibald succinctly defined the qualities setting my most comfortable flats apart from other shoes: They all have stability, support, and flexibility in spades. (Who can honestly say the same about a four-inch heel?) “A luxurious insole [brings] lasting comfort, high-quality materials are flexible, soft, and durable, and seamless construction minimizes potential friction points and discomfort,” Archibald says. “I also look for lightweight shoes that allow for freedom of movement, which prevents fatigue and promotes natural foot motion.”
When flats are comfortable and speak to my personal style, I can’t help but wear them daily. To assemble Bazaar ’s edit of the most comfortable flats ahead, I considered the silhouette, toe box shape, and materials of each shoe. I also incorporated shopper reviews and styles I’ve purchased and tested at length. The resulting list includes nine flats that are so good, they could possibly replace your walking shoes .
This post has been updated.
Dream Ballerina
After appearing in Bazaar ’s guide to the best ballet flats , Mansur Gavriel’s Dream Ballerinas have earned a second shout-out here. The leather is soft and water-resistant, the fit is adjustable with the perfectly placed ties, and the square-toe shape is endlessly walkable. Their simple, streamlined design also makes them a contender for a personal uniform.
“It’s an effortless staple that looks chic with an oversize wide-leg trouser, monochromatic T-shirt, and a menswear-inspired leather belt,” senior fashion and accessories editor Jaclyn Alexandra Cohen agrees.
Sizes: 35–41
Colors: Silver, pink, black, navy, cacao, leaf, sand, and more
Materials: Leather
What reviewers are saying: “Great flats! These are so comfortable and pretty.”
The Woven Quadra Ballerina
When texture and a little sprezzatura are your highest priorities, choose these woven ballet flats from Eledera. Each pair is hand-woven in Italy, with a technique that creates a flexible yet durable fit. In the low (10-millimeter) heel, leather and rubber are stacked for extra support.
Sizes: 36–41
Colors: Red, black, brown
Materials: Woven leather, rubber
The Square Mary Jane
“Break-in free” might sound like an overpromise, but this pair over-delivers on it. From the first time I wore these Mary Janes (to work, with a striped sweater, circle skirt , and white crew socks), I was impressed with their construction and feel. They’re like house slippers cleverly masquerading as out-and-about shoes, with their soft, flexible, and supportive sole. The special recycled fabric has a hint of stretch that doesn’t stretch out —a crucial distinction for a shoe I now wear weekly. And, like Archibald’s favorite pair, they’re also machine washable.
Sizes: 5–13
Colors: Black, chocolate spot, red, gardenia, and more
Materials: 3-D knit
What reviewers are saying: “These shoes were comfy right out of the box! Also super nice looking. I’ve already gotten lots of compliments and I’ve only worn them twice. My co-workers are all buying pairs!”
Mesh flats like Dear Frances’s deliver comfort beyond a low-to-the-ground sole. The sleekly minimalist mesh fabric feels like a whisper against your skin on warm days.
Sizes: 35–42
Colors: White, black, red, nude, and more
Materials: Mesh, leather
What reviewers are saying: “Bought these on a whim & they did not disappoint. Quality construction, comfortable after a full day of wear & true to size. Very stylish, unique & minimalist. ordering was easy & shipping was quick. Love!”
Jordaan Leather Loafer
Gucci’s Jordaan loafers were my first designer footwear purchase, and I’ve never looked back. The curved toe and horsebit detail are truly timeless; archival street-style images will back me up here. I also love how the back of the shoe folds down to make it a mule, if you so choose.
Sizes: 4–12
Colors: Floral, black, white, brown, pink, and more
Materials: Canvas, leather
Minnie Travel Ballet Flats
Fashion insiders have been whispering about the imminent return of Tory Burch’s logo-medallion flats for months. Regardless of where the trend cycle is spinning, these preppy flats are packable for an elevated travel outfit or comfortable enough to wear through security and on the flight.
Colors: Tan, black, mauve
Materials: Leather, rubber, metal hardware
What reviewers are saying: “These shoes are well worth the price! Completely comfortable, beautiful fit, and well made. Highly recommend!”
Logo Strap Ballet Flat
I felt an urge to shop Miu Miu’s ballet flats the moment they appeared on the runway. I waited nearly a year after their release, absorbing all the ways other women were styling them, to make sure they’d be more than a one-time wear, before finally ordering mine.
I’ve never been so delighted by a purchase. People often use the word silky to describe satin, and this was the first shoe I thought earned the qualifier. Then there’s the construction of the toe box and the heel, which caressed my foot from the moment I first put them on. With a little pair of ankle socks, I can comfortably wear them all day while soaking in all sorts of praise. (Most commonly, “Mrs. Prada would approve!”)
Sizes: 6–10
Colors: Pink and black (at Nordstrom); cocoa, lake blue, black, red, and white (at Miu Miu )
Materials: Leather, satin, elastic band
Slide into something comfortable for birthday parties, work dinners, and other functions with a semiformal dress code. These Margaux mules are lined with 5 millimeters of memory foam, to support your feet through long hours standing—and they’re adorned with an oversize bow that’s a gift to wear.
Sizes: 5–13.5
Colors: Black, midnight, pink, linen, and more
Materials: Suede, leather, memory foam
What reviewers are saying: “I just got my shoes and was immediately impressed with the workmanship and how beautiful they are! I wore them in NYC this past weekend for a night on the town and they were so very comfortable. I ended up wearing them down to breakfast at the hotel and for the flight home… they are not only stylish and versatile but easy on your feet as well! I am very impressed with the quality, look and fit of these shoes.”
The Day Ballet Flat
I own more than a few pairs of Everlane shoes, from fisherman sandals to these glovelike ballet flats. This pair offers incredible quality at a lower price: The leather is soft, the bow fixtures stay tied, and the little loops at the back make them easy to take on and off. The way the shoe hugs my foot isn’t as amenable to a sock-styling moment, so I often wear these with a thin, no-show liner.
Sizes: 5–11
Colors: Black, canvas, pale pink, toasted almond, and more
What reviewers are saying: “This is the most comfortable ballet flat I’ve ever owned. I wear them basically every day to work and walking around NYC. My feet never hurt and did not need to break them in. They run true to size. Worth every penny.”
How do I find comfortable flat shoes?
Comfortable flat shoes for standing all day will likely be made with lightweight, soft materials. Leather, satin, and 3-D woven knits won’t irritate your feet; they’re also more pliable and flexible. As for the soles, memory foam–padded insoles guarantee you can spend hours on your feet.
Toe shape and silhouette also contribute to a flat’s comfort level, Rothy’s chief product officer Heather Archibald notes. Pointed toes can be more suited to narrow feet, while square or rounded toes accommodate wider feet.

Sunil Kant Munjal on what makes the Serendipity Arts Festival unlike all others
"saf is a bridge between india and the world," he says when discussing future plans and why there is no place like goa for it..
Goa, the sunshine state known for its beaches, nightlife and susegad way of life is fast becoming a cultural hub, thanks to a series of festivals that promote both visual and performing arts. One of the largest happens to be the Serendipity Arts Festival (SAF), now in its eighth edition (including two years when it was online during the pandemic).
The SAF spans across various disciplines, such as performing, visual, culinary, and performance arts and crafts. The 2023 festival edition that took place in December featured more than 150 events and showcased creations of over 1,500 artists. It was curated by 10 experts—Sandeep Kumar Sangaru and Anjana Somany (crafts), chef Thomas Zacharias and The Locavore Team (culinary), Bickram Ghosh along with Ricky Kej (music), Geeta Chandran and Mayuri Upadhya (performances), Veerangana Kumari Solanki and Vidya Shivadas (visual arts) and Quasar Thakore Padamsee (theatre). The festival spanning nine days was spread over 18 locations and subvenues across Panjim and was attended by art lovers from over 50 countries, with an average of a lakh footfall a day. Bazaar India spoke to Sunil Kant Munjal, the chairman of Hero Enterprises and founder patron of Serendipity Arts Foundation, on what makes SAF distinct, Goa as a venue and what’s next for the festival.
Harper’s Bazaar: What was the major objective behind SAF and what makes it so distinct? Sunil Kant Munjal: We’ve inherited the richest cultural heritage in the world, barring none. But sadly, over a period of time, the exposure has declined. Access has become limited—almost exclusive to a few. So, one of the objectives of the festival was to provide access to a wide variety of art forms to the general public, without limiting it to any one. So, it’s unlike any other art show that you would go to. It’s very experiential. You can engage with artists and artisans. There are workshops and conversations going on. We have also attempted to make it more accessible and inclusive. So, our venues are wheelchair accessible, there are descriptions in braille. We are trying to bring in a large section of the population, which is generally absent from our lives. We bring in busloads of street children, kids from orphanages, young girls, transgender communities, elders from care homes. Deaf, mute and blind visitors and those with learning disabilities. And for all of them, we run special curated programmes.
HB: What’s next for the festival? SKM : I don’t think we have done enough yet. I think there is a lot more to do. So, what next is not a question that we ask ourselves too often except to say that we will continue to push the boundaries of what we are doing. We currently have artists from over 20 countries. We are looking at SAF as a bridge between India and the world.
HB : Does that mean SAF will go to other countries or other cities in India? SKM : We have requests from places such as London and Dubai along with other states in India and we are considering it. But it requires a lot of planning. Hopefully we will have good hosts in these places who can help with local facilitation. There are so many moving parts. You’re dealing with people, equipment, technology, etc. There are logistics and permissions to be dealt with. Also, we focus on all art forms and therefore, it has an added complexity. So, it’s not as if you are just taking one play or one music performance...we can do that, but then it would not be the complete essence of Serendipity.
Having said that, Goa has been a great partner. The government has been extremely supportive. It’s also a great venue in terms of air and train connectivity, having hotels at all price points, beautiful venues which are within easy distance of each other, a communtiy which is extremely supportive and patronises the arts.
HB: Do you think it is important to introduce art as an education to children—something that you’re doing at the festival—on a larger scale in a country like India? SKM : I have no doubt whatsoever. Our big focus on STEM has helped us create an army of doctors, scientists and technicians. But what we have lost are our softer aspects. It is essential for us to add liberal studies to our education system to make us more complete in terms of our ability to comprehend and respond to situations. The earlier you start the better it is. In the last few years, the exposure to arts that SAF has provided to children seems to have had a domino effect. An independent Impact study showed that nearly 40 per cent more children have selected arts as a subject than before the festival started. That is encouraging because for us it is important to have a long-term impact over the people.

The Kuching Old Bazaar in Sarawak is full of history, and life

Located in the heart of the city of Kuching in Sarawak, is its 200-year-old Chinatown, also known as Kuching Old Bazaar. The place is a fine testament to the olden days, and its charm lies in its timeless narratives of the past.
The Old Bazaar is made up of several streets, including Carpenter Street, Ewe Hai Street, Bishopsgate Street and Upper China Street. Home to over 200 shophouses, the old alleys are teeming with life, with various traditional businesses still up and running today.
Many Chinese immigrants came to Sarawak in the early 1900s mainly as labourers, coolies, carpenters and, interestingly, frame makers.
Carpenter Street was so named because carpentry was a very big deal back then. Unfortunately, the rising cost of wood caused people to stop ordering custom-made items like furniture, and instead, opted for things that were mass-produced.
Eventually, carpenters had to resort to plying other trades to make ends meet.
“People were unwilling to toil long hours, and the price of wood was also increasing,” says Kelvin Lu, 26, a local tour guide who took us on a heritage trail in Kuching during a media trip organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board recently.
Standing at the junction of Wayang Street and Ewe Hai Street is the Hong San Si Temple, which is managed by the Kuching Hokkien Association.
This popular temple is believed to have been around for more than 150 years. The facade embodies a unique form of religious architecture and has beautifully sculpted pillars.
Right across from the worship house is a rather unassuming traditional theatre, and surprisingly, it is still functioning. Performances are usually held on special occasions like the Hungry Ghost Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival.
“The shophouses along Ewe Hai Street were built by Sarawak’s first kapitan, Ong Ewe Hai,” Lu says.
As we journeyed on, we caught a whiff of the enticing aroma of coffee that stopped us in our tracks. Coffee beans in Kuching are locally sourced and roasted daily, too.
Further down the road, one can find colourful murals depicting scenes of the past, like wooden clogs shops and the trading of local products.
“Wooden clogs were versatile footwear back then due to its anti-slip and anti-humidity features. It was popular among hawkers at the wet markets,” Lu explains, adding the once-thriving interest in making wooden clogs dwindled when rubber plantation came into the market in the 1980s and rubber slippers or thongs were introduced.
Meanwhile, in the quieter pocket of Bishopsgate Street, a whimsical 103-year-old tinsmith shop – Ho Nyen Foh – still thrives. Presently, the shop is helmed by the third generation of the founder. Unfortunately, according to its proprietor, the long-standing profession may soon come to an end due to the lack of interest in preserving the trade among today’s generation.
Other traditional businesses dominating the scene at the Old Bazaar are Yeck Sung Frame Makers, a generational craft shop and the only framing shop in Chinatown, watch shops (another traditional craft handed down through generations), and an old-school medicine store.
You can take a break from your walking tour with a cup of “opium” coffee at Hiap Yak Tea Shop at Kai Joo Lane. But do not worry, you won’t get high on this beverage, as it is merely black coffee served with a pat of butter.
The owner, Tan, said the unique brew was “inspired” by opium smokers who used to visit the shop and drink its thick coffee with butter.
Stroll along Jalan Tun Haji Openg to see the expansive colonial building that currently houses Kuching’s General Post Office. Constructed in 1931, the imposing structure that bears neoclassical style and Corinthian columns are a stark contrast to Kuching’s quaint surroundings.
“Its remarkable architecture draws tourists’ attention,” Lu shares.
We took a mini tour inside the post office, where we were stunned by the 2,000 red post office boxes (also known as P.O. Boxes) in the building. Lu says that some locals, especially those living on the outskirts and hard-to-reach areas, would still rent the mailboxes to deliver and retrieve letters.
Greeting visitors at India Street is “The Early Merces”, a large mural featuring two textile traders, Wee Aik Oh and Sayed Ahmad. The passionate duo started textile trading in Sarawak in the 1930s.
“Textile business was operated mainly by the Chinese and Indians at this street. The painting aims to celebrate Sarawak’s rich textile heritage in the old quarter of the city,” Lu says.
Two neighbouring streets that you can also explore are Opium Street and Gambir Street, adjacent to the Sarawak River. Gambir is a plant extract, traditionally used to dye leather. Today, gambir is sold as a remedy to soothe toothaches.
Meanwhile, the trading of opium used to be legal during British rule in Sarawak.
One fascinating gem here is the state’s oldest Indian Mosque, or Masjid Bandar Kuching, built in the 19th century by the Indian Muslim community. You will pass through shops selling spices and other daily necessities, before arriving at a narrow lane where the mosque is located.
Though the mosque is no longer in use, the building still stands. There is a second structure, constructed right opposite Gambir Street, called India Mosque Kuching, majestically floating on the Sarawak River.
Fun activities
We proceeded to the Kuching Waterfront after a short break. Just a few minutes from Chinatown, this riverside walk is a crowd favourite. From enthusiastic weekend warriors conquering the waterfront promenade, to food vendors and visitors enjoying the picture-perfect scenery, this is a great spot to unwind.
Since its opening in 2017, the Darul Hana Bridge has become quite an attraction for both locals and tourists. Also known as the Golden Anniversary Bridge, the elevated suspension bridge – built over the river – serves as a link between the northern and southern side of the city. Not only does it offer an aerial view of the surrounding area, but the bridge also provides a seamless access to the iconic State Legislative Assembly Building and other historical sites.
Walk over to the 145-year-old Fort Margherita nearby, one of the last vestiges of the Brooke Dynasty, who ruled Sarawak for three generations in the span of more than 100 years. The fort sits on a hill overlooking the river, making it a strategic location, says Lu.
During the Brooke reign, over 24 forts were built to protect Kuching from enemies. Today, only a handful of them are still around.
Lu describes it as such: “Fort Margherita was dedicated to the second White Rajah of Sarawak Charles Brooke’s wife, Renee Margaret Alice. This historical monument was once a defence fort for the soldiers and also acted as a prison.”
Artefacts used during the era are displayed at the Brooke Gallery, which was launched in 2016. The building was designed to look like an English castle, with a courtyard surrounded by high walls. There is a beautifully manicured garden outside the fort that visitors can check out.
When you are done exploring the fort, but don’t feel like walking back, hop on the penambang (or perahu tambang) – a traditional water taxi. Head to the jetty that’s located at the nearby village, Kampung Boyan.
Penambang is a common way to commute for locals who want to cross the river. The boat has a roof to provide shade for passengers, especially from the scorching heat. The roof, in particular, is embellished with vibrant motifs representing ethnic cultures.
In the evening, visitors can embark on a one-hour “odyssey” exploring the beauty of Sarawak River through Royal Kuching Cruise, a double-decker boat. This is a sunset cruise, which means guests will be able to witness the stunning view of the sun setting over the horizon at its rooftop deck.
Passengers can also catch some live cultural performances such as traditional dances and sape shows during the cruise. Light refreshments are provided while you enjoy the scenic vistas lining both sides of the river.
Dotting the landscapes are colourful Malay villages, the Astana, floating mosque, and Brooke Dockyard. Photo opportunities are also abundant.
When you are in Kuching, remember to also try the capital’s signature Gula Apong Ice Cream.
If you want to explore the nooks and crannies of the town, the best way to do so is to take a guided tour, as will definitely help you unearth hidden corners.

“The surgery was successful; however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present,” she said in a video statement. “My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”
Expressing her support for others affected by cancer, she continued, “We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I’m able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”
Below, we’ve rounded up the reactions from celebrities and dignitaries when they heard the news.
Olivia Munn
The actor, who recently opened up about her own journey battling breast cancer, commented on Instagram, “Thank you for showing what it’s like to fight with grace and determination for yourself and for your family. Wishing you all the best. 🤍🤍🤍.”
Katie Couric
The journalist is among the millions of users who have liked the Princess of Wales’s video statement on Instagram. Couric has spoken about her experience being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022.
Rishi Sunak
United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak released a statement shortly after Kate’s announcement.
“The Princess of Wales has the love and support of the whole country as she continues her recovery,” the message read. “She has shown tremendous bravery with her statement today.”
Sunak also lambasted the viral public speculation about the princess’s health and whereabouts of recent weeks, adding, “She has been subjected to intense scrutiny and has been unfairly treated by certain sections of the media around the world and on social media. When it comes to matters of health, like everyone else, she must be afforded the privacy to focus on her treatment and be with her loving family.”
Justin Trudeau
Canada's Prime Minister posted a message in support of Kate to X.
“My thoughts are with the Princess of Wales, her children, and the entire Royal Family following the news of her cancer so courageously shared,” he wrote. “On behalf of Canadians, I’m sending my support as she undergoes treatment. We’re all wishing her a swift recovery.”
Billie Jean King
The tennis star reposted Kate's video on X and added the following message: “Sending our love, support, and best wishes for a full and complete recovery to Catherine, The Princess of Wales.”
Blake Lively
In the wake of Kate’s announcement, Lively apologized for a joke she made about the princess following the release of her digitally altered Mother’s Day photo —and the controversy that came with it.
The actor wrote on her Instagram Story: “I'm sure no-one cares today but I feel I have to acknowledge this. I made a silly post around the 'photoshop fails' frenzy and, oh, man, that post has me mortified today. I'm sorry. Sending love and well wishes to all, always.”
The post in question was to promote her natural sparkling soda brand, Betty Buzz. On March 13, Lively shared on Instagram a highly edited photo of herself holding a can of her soda while lounging on a beach. “I’m so excited to share this new photo I just took today to announce our 4 new @bettybuzz & @bettybooze products! Now you know why I’ve been MIA,” she wrote, referencing the Kate photo drama. The Gossip Girl alum has since deleted the post.
Catherine Zeta-Jones
The actor shared a photo of Kate on Instagram, writing in the post caption, “Wales and the World is with you ♥️ HRH Princess of Wales. Love to you always.♥️🏴♥️🏴.”

She also writes on social movements, connecting with activists leading the fight on workers' rights, climate justice, and more. Offline, she’s probably spending too much time on TikTok, rewatching Emma (the 2020 version, of course), or buying yet another corset.
