Ground stop returns as storm causes chaos at Boston Logan airport

There were already dozens of cancellations and delays before the faa issued the ground stop monday morning., by asher klein and carla rojo • published december 18, 2023 • updated on december 19, 2023 at 12:01 am.

Flights to Boston's Logan International Airport were grounded for hours Monday amid high winds — a storm was battering the area Monday morning .

A ground stop, the second of the day, was ordered because of high winds from 2:20 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., according to the FAA .

There were already dozens of cancellations and delays before the FAA issued the first ground stop Monday morning, and more. About half of the day's flights were delayed or canceled as of about 10 a.m., and by 1:25 p.m., most of the day's flights were affected, according to the FlightAware MiseryMap .

The initial ground stop, which was extended more than once, ended at 12:44 p.m., according to the FAA. But the wind was causing residual delays to flights with an average of 134 minutes — over two hours.

Despite that ground stop being lifted, there have been residual cancellations and dozens of delays. The average delay time at the airport was more than two and a half hours.

"We ask passengers to contact their airline for the best information on their flight and to have patience as this storm passes," said Jennifer Mehigan, director of media relations for the Massachusetts Port Authority.

Travelers can check the status of their flights on the Massport website .

The airport had a wind gust of 68 mph and sustained winds of 49 mph as of 10:54 a.m.

For those staying in Boston, the storm made for a messy Monday morning commute. Trees were down on roadways, flooding closed highways and crashes were reported around the area.

GET LOCAL BREAKING NEWS ALERTS

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

Travelers at Boston's Logan Airport continued to wait out widespread delays on Wednesday as airlines and the Air Traffic Control system faced increasing flights and weather issues.

The FAA was expecting about 48,000 flights on Tuesday, rising on Wednesday and peaking at more than 52,500 on Thursday, which figures to be the biggest travel day of the holiday period.

On Tuesday, delays ran several hours at airports in the Northeast, as thunderstorms pounded the region.

At various times, the Federal Aviation Administration held up flights bound for LaGuardia Airport in New York and Reagan Washington National and Baltimore-Washington airports near the nation's capital.

By mid-afternoon on the East Coast, more than 4,000 flights were delayed and about 1,300 canceled, according to FlightAware.

Wednesday was not shaping up to be any better, with strong thunderstorms peppering the landscape across the Northeast.

Taylor Sweat has been stuck in limbo at the hands of the airline industry. The young mother has just one request.

"We're trying to just get home to our baby," Sweat said.

Daniel Frederick is traveling to San Diego for business. He says this airport mess could impact his bottom line. "They were understanding of the delay, but now I don't know what to say," Frederick said.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, whose department includes the FAA, has been beating up on the airlines for more than a year. He has accused them of failing to live up to reasonable standards of customer service and suggested that they are scheduling more flights than they can handle.

The airlines are punching back.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby blamed a shortage of federal air traffic controllers for massive disruptions last weekend at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, a critical hub for his airline.

“We estimate that over 150,000 customers on United alone were impacted this weekend because of FAA staffing issues and their ability to manage traffic,” Kirby wrote in a memo to employees Tuesday night.

The FAA has admitted that it is understaffed at key facilities, including one in the New York City region. It is training about 3,000 new air traffic controllers , but most of them won't be ready anytime soon. Last week, the Transportation Department's inspector general said in a report that the FAA has made only “limited efforts” to adequately staff critical air traffic control centers and lacks a plan to tackle the problem.

The good news: Airlines are canceling only 1.5% of U.S. flights this month, a lower percentage than a year ago or in June 2019, the last summer before the pandemic.

On the other hand, delays are running above even their elevated rate in June of last year, when airlines were still rebuilding their workforce.

Friday brings more than 2,600 flight cancellations as disruption stretches into third week

Airports in new york, boston and d.c. were among the hardest hit..

air travel delays boston

Flight disruptions stretched into their third week on Friday with snow in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, prompting high numbers of flight cancellations in the New York City, Boston and Washington regions.

According to FlightAware, a flight-tracking website, more than 2,600 flights within, to and from the United States were canceled Friday. Southwest Airlines continued to be the hardest hit among major U.S. carriers, with more than 520 flights canceled, roughly 17 percent of scheduled departures.

At Boston’s Logan International Airport, about 42 percent of departures were canceled Friday, according to FlightAware. In the New York City area, nearly 200 departures were scrubbed, about 36 percent of those scheduled. John F. Kennedy International reported more than 130, or 22 percent, of departures were canceled Friday, while roughly 23 percent of flights out of Newark’s Liberty International were canceled.

Delays also were reported at three Washington-area airports, which are still trying to rebound from a Monday storm that dumped more than 10 inches of snow in some parts of the region. Reagan National Airport received nearly seven inches of snow Monday, prompting the cancellation of more than 85 percent of flights that day.

On Friday, there were more than 90 flight cancellations at National, about 21 percent of scheduled departures, according to FlightAware. At Baltimore-Washington Marshall International, a major hub for Southwest, more than 40 flights, roughly 16 percent of those scheduled, were scrubbed. Meanwhile, at Washington Dulles International, 12 percent of flights were canceled.

Among U.S. carriers, Southwest remains the most affected, with more than 500 cancellations, about 17 percent of Friday’s scheduled departures. Carriers with strong presences in Boston and New York City, including American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines, also were affected. JetBlue scrapped 17 percent of planned departures Friday, while American canceled more than 180.

United, which also has struggled with staffing issues and weather impacts, warned customers whose itineraries included Denver and cities in the Northeast of potential issues via Twitter.

Winter weather in the Northeast & Denver may result in delays & cancellations Jan. 5 - 8. If you have an upcoming flight and need to make changes, the fastest way to do so is in the United app where you can self-service or call, text or video chat with a customer service agent. — United Airlines (@united) January 5, 2022

The Chicago-based carrier canceled 208, or 10 percent, of its scheduled departures Friday.

Airlines have blamed the cancellations on a combination of factors. Initially, staffing shortages due to rising numbers of coronavirus infections caused by the omicron variant forced airlines to reduce their schedules, but those shortages have been aggravated by bad weather in various parts of the country.

The Transportation Security Administration also has seen an uptick in infections. On Friday, it reported 3,503 cases, an increase of 894 since Monday. The rising numbers are beginning to affect the agency’s operations. On Friday, the agency temporarily closed two of the four checkpoints at Phoenix Sky Harbor International’s busiest terminal, Terminal 4, which is home to Southwest and American airlines as well as several international carriers. News of the temporary closure was first reported by the Arizona Republic.

“We are monitoring this closely, and this situation only seems to affect Phoenix Sky Harbor,” said Carter Langston, a TSA spokesman.

During this most recent wave of disruptions, many travelers have complained about waiting for hours on hold to rebook flights or track lost baggage. Airlines have invested billions of dollars in tools to allow customers to rebook flights online or via their smartphones, but many travelers said those tools did not work for their situations.

Waited in chat for like 4 hours so I could change a flight that they changed on me before someone helped me. Then several minutes between replies. Never did what I told him and the chat kept disconnecting so I waited today and now the flight is $40 more. Ridiculous — Ryan (@RyanX860) January 7, 2022

Henry Harteveldt, an aviation analyst, said those complaints may prompt some airlines to rethink staffing in their customer service centers.

“As great as tech can be, it’s very clear that when problems occur and it’s on a large scale, lots of people still turn to the phone [to call the centers],” he said.

With holiday bookings reaching pre-pandemic levels, airlines had hoped to close out 2021 strong. Analysts said carriers are likely to see some effect from the current spate of disruptions, but airlines will bounce back.

“While high profile, the flight cancellations pose only a temporary problem for the airlines, and the cancellation rate will decline in upcoming weeks,” Jonathan Root, a senior vice president at Moody’s, wrote in a report released this week. “We expect the financial impact of the cancellations to be modest, marginally lowering operating cash flow in these weeks.”

U.S. airlines are scheduled to report fourth-quarter earnings next week.

American Airlines flight from NY to Madrid diverted to Boston for a maintenance issue, officials say

An American Airlines plane prepares to land at Miami International Airport in Florida.

An American Airlines flight from New York was diverted to Boston on the way to Spain Wednesday night because of a “maintenance issue,” officials said.

Flight 94, which departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport at 7:28 p.m., landed at Logan International Airport around 10 p.m., according to FlightAware , an online tracker.

The flight landed safely and the airplane was taken out of service to be inspected by a maintenance team, according to American Airlines.

Travelers were provided with overnight hotel accommodations and will depart for Madrid tomorrow on a replacement aircraft, the airline said in a statement.

“We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused,” the statement said.

Cracked windshield forces American Airlines flight to make emergency landing in Boston

BOSTON - An American Airlines flight bound for Spain was forced to divert to Logan Airport in Boston Wednesday night because of a cracked windshield, according to Massachusetts State Police.

American Airlines flight 94

American Airlines Flight 94 took off from JFK Airport in New York City and was headed to Madrid, Spain when it was diverted to Boston because of what the airline said was a "maintenance issue."

The flight landed safely at 10:14 p.m. at Logan Airport and it taxied to the gate under its on own power. American Airlines said the jet was taken out of service to be inspected by their maintenance team.

No one was hurt. Passengers were forced to spend the night in Boston. They'll leave for Madrid on a new flight on a replacement jet Thursday afternoon.

American Airlines apology

"We never want to disrupt our customers' travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused," American Airlines said in a statement to WBZ-TV.

"How does a multi-millionaire company with so many resources not foresee this," passenger Nico Moreno told WBZ after getting off the flight.

"The type of solution they give you is very minimal in terms of, you don't make up for the money I lose when I miss my job. You don't make up the time I lose for everything I have at home, all the situations, no? And all the situations these people have."

Recent airline incidents

U.S. airline safety has been under renewed scrutiny after the door panel of an Alaska Airlines flight blew out in mid-air last month, just minutes after the Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft had taken off from Portland, Oregon.

A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board determined that four bolts which were meant to hold the door plug in place were missing.

United Airlines is also raising its checked bag fee. See by how much.

air travel delays boston

Two major U.S. airlines announced higher fees for air passengers in one week.

United Airlines announced Friday it will be raising its checked bag fee for customers traveling in the U.S. by $5 starting Saturday, following American Airlines' announcement.

Passengers will pay $40 for their first checked bag ($35 by paying in advance) and $50 for a second checked bag (or $45 in advance).

"For the first time in four years, United is raising checked bag fees for customers traveling in North America," United said in a statement. "United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military members and customers traveling in premium cabins can still check a bag for free, and customers in most markets will still enjoy a $5 discount if they prepay for their bags online at least 24 hours before their flight."

The airline said it is in the process of updating all of its mainline aircraft to fit more carry-on bags.

American Airlines announced earlier this week it was raising the price of a first checked bag from $30 to $40 on most flights – or $35 by paying in advance – pointing to the price of fuel as a major factor in the increase.

JetBlue and  Alaska Airlines  also raised bag fees this year.

JetBlue planes clip one another at Boston Logan Airport

Two JetBlue planes clipped each other Thursday morning while on a deicing pad at Boston Logan International Airport.

The incident occurred when the two planes were on adjacent deicing pad lanes, JetBlue said in a statement. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the left winglet of JetBlue flight 777, an Airbus A321neo, struck the right horizontal stabilizer of JetBlue flight 551, which was an Airbus A321.

The impact damaged one aircraft's winglet and the other plane's tail section, according to JetBlue.

The FAA said the event happened on an area of the tarmac that is controlled by the airline. The agency will investigate the incident.

The incident occurred around 6:40 a.m. ET, according to the FAA and the flight tracking website FlightRadar24.

JetBlue said no injuries were reported by passengers or crew on either aircraft.

"We were hit by another aircraft," the pilot of JetBlue flight 551 said on air traffic control audio, obtained through LiveATC.net.

A pilot of a nearby plane, who witnessed the event, told air traffic control: "We saw two aircrafts hit the tail and the wing."

Dave Sauter was a passenger on JetBlue flight 777, headed to Las Vegas.

"You felt the brake when they stopped; you didn't feel the collision," he told ABC News. "It was too minor with that amount of weight moving."

He said that the passengers weren't scared, but frustrated.

JetBlue said both aircraft will be taken out of service for repairs and the two flights will operate on other planes. JetBlue 777 was scheduled to go to Las Vegas and JetBlue 551 to Orlando.

"Safety is JetBlue's priority, and we will work to determine how and why this incident occurred," JetBlue said in a statement following the incident.

Boston Logan has seen other wing clip incidents over the past 12 months. Last March, two United planes clipped wings while one was pushing back from the gate. And in June, a United plane's wing clipped the tail of a Delta plane while the United flight was taxiing to a holding pad.

Boston 25 Now

No sunshine this week

HELLO CLOUDS!

Gets set for a mild and unsettled week. Today that looks like near steady 40s, mostly cloudy skies, and a few afternoon sprinkles along the coast. Patchy drizzle and fog will expand tonight.

Steady rain will arrive tomorrow morning with on/off showers lasting throughout Tuesday. Temperatures will be mild enough that it’s just plain rain without worries for snow or ice. Rainfall will average 1/2″ in southern New England with isolated spots seeing as much as 1″ total. This won’t result in any flooding, but it will be pretty drab and dreary all day.

Wednesday won’t be a washout, but it will remain overact with rain redeveloping at some point in the afternoon.

THURSDAY ALERT

Rain and wind will be most impactful Thursday. It will be a soaker with anywhere from 1″ to 4″ in the forecast as of now. Gusty winds will likely develop with sustained wind 15-25 mph and gusts 40-55 mph (strongest on Cape Cod). Be sure to check back this week as we time out the downpour potential.

After a brief break of sunshine Friday, clouds and showers are expected to return this weekend.
