Princess Cruises ship cabin and suite guide: Everything you want to know

Gene Sloan

Is a balcony cabin a must for you when you cruise? Princess Cruises could be your line.

The California-based brand was a pioneer in adding a large number of balcony cabins to ships, and even its oldest vessels are loaded with balcony cabins — something that can't be said for many of its rivals.

On the flip side, Princess offers relatively few suites on its ships compared to some of the big-ship lines with which it most directly competes, including Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. Just 46 of the 1,830 rooms on the line's recently unveiled Discovery Princess are suites, for instance. Believe it or not, that's an improvement from earlier vessels in the same series, some of which have as few as 36 suites.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Princess also isn't known for enormous and amenity-filled suites.

What this means is there aren't a lot of ways to live large on a Princess ship or pack a lot of people into a single accommodation. Until the debut of Sky Princess in 2019, the line didn't have a single cabin that could accommodate more than four people.

That said, on Princess ships, you can often create larger living spaces by booking two connecting cabins.

A Princess Cruises cabin primer

As is typical for many cruise ships, Princess vessels offer cabins in four broad categories: Windowless "inside" cabins, ocean-view cabins, balcony cabins and suites.

As noted above, a significant portion of cabins on all Princess ships are balcony cabins — the category of cabin that everyone wants these days. About 80% of the 1,834 cabins on Princess's six-month-old Enchanted Princess are balcony cabins or suites with balconies, for instance. Compare that to the 72% of cabins on Royal Caribbean's four-year-old Symphony of the Seas that are balcony cabins or suites with balconies.

princess alaska cruise staterooms

Notably, every single cabin facing the sea on three of the newest Princess ships — Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess — has a balcony. These three vessels are completely devoid of ocean-view cabins (cabins facing the sea that only have a window). That's relatively unusual in the world of big mass-market ships — the niche of cruising in which Princess plays. It's more common with luxury cruise vessels.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises ships

At the same time, as noted above, Princess vessels have fewer suites than you'll find on the ships operated by such big-ship brands as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity.

Here's a breakdown of the broad cabin categories on Royal Princess, which is typical of the line's newer ships (it's the prototype vessel for the line's new, six-ship Royal Class series):

Inside cabins: 342 (19%) Ocean-view cabins: 0 (0%) Balcony cabins (including mini-suites): 1,402 (79%) Suites: 36 (2%)

On older Princess ships (and, in general, all older cruise ships), there are fewer balcony cabins. However, the ratio of balcony cabins to non-balcony cabins is much higher on older Princess ships than it is on older vessels at many other big-ship lines. An impressive 72% of the 1,000 cabins on Princess's 2003-built Coral Princess, for instance, are balcony cabins.

On Coral Princess, inside cabins and ocean-view cabins only make up 26% of all rooms. A breakdown of the cabin categories on that ship:

Inside cabins: 108 (11%) Ocean-view cabins: 157 (16%) Balcony cabins (including mini-suites): 719 (72%) Suites: 16 (2%)

The takeaway here is that you'll have an easier time locking down a balcony cabin on a Princess ship — even an older Princess ship — than you will when booking many of the ships operated by competing big-ship lines.

Just note that you'll want to book early if you're aiming for a suite on a Princess ship since there are so few of them. Note, also, that suites tend to sell out early on cruise ships in general. An old saying in the cruise industry is that "ships sell from the top and the bottom." That is, the first cabins on any vessel to sell out are the most expensive cabins, which are the suites, and then the least expensive cabins, which typically are the inside cabins. The mid-priced "middle" cabins sell last.

Design-wise, Princess's cabins and suites are fairly basic and comfortable, if not super stylish.

When it comes to rooms, Princess is sort of the Marriott of the big-ship cruise world. Its rooms are comfortable and functional, but a bit bland. Avant-garde style is not a Princess thing.

Inside cabins on Princess Cruises ships

These are the cabins you stay in when you're on a tight budget. On any Princess ship, they are almost always the least-expensive option when you're booking a cabin. You often can save considerable money by booking an inside cabin versus an ocean-view or higher-level cabin.

What you'll give up, of course, is that ocean view. Your room will have four walls and no windows offering a glimpse of the outside world.

princess alaska cruise staterooms

You'll also be in a relatively small room. The typical inside cabin on the new Discovery Princess measures 166 square feet, with some as big as 175 square feet. By comparison, the typical balcony cabin on Discovery Princess measures 181 square feet, not including a 41-square-foot balcony (for a total of 222 square feet).

Still, the inside cabins on Princess ships are bigger than the inside cabins on ships operated by some of the line's main competitors.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Princess ship

Inside cabins on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, for instance, measure just 149 square feet — quite a bit less than the inside cabins on Discovery Princess.

princess alaska cruise staterooms

Note that older Princess ships sometimes have smaller inside cabins than newer Princess ships. On the line's 2003-built Coral Princess, inside cabins measure just 156 to 166 square feet. On the line's 1998-built Grand Princess, most inside cabins are 160 square feet (some wheelchair-accessible inside cabins on Grand Princess measure 182 square feet).

Many inside cabins on Princess ships have pull-down bunks that will allow for up to four people to stay in the rooms.

Ocean-view cabins on Princess Cruises ships

With an ocean-view cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea, but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

As noted above, three of Princess's newest vessels — Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess — don't have a single ocean-view cabin. Every outward-facing cabin has a balcony. However, you'll find ocean-view cabins on the line's older vessels and also on the line's three newest ships, Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess.

In general, ocean-view cabins on the Princess ships that have them are a tad bigger than the inside cabins found on the same vessels. On the line's Emerald Princess, for instance, the typical ocean-view cabin measures 178 square feet. The typical inside cabin on Emerald Princess measures 163 square feet.

princess alaska cruise staterooms

On many Princess ships that have ocean-view cabins, the rooms are mostly found just above the promenade deck, where the lifeboats hang, and have obstructed views. You'll also sometimes find a few ocean-view cabins at the back of Princess vessels, facing the wake.

Related: The 3 classes of Princess ships, explained

On the line's two Coral Class ships — Coral Princess and Island Princess — there are a few "premium" ocean-view cabins that measure a more spacious 212 square feet. If you're the kind of traveler who needs a lot of space, these rooms can be a good choice.

princess alaska cruise staterooms

There also are a handful of "premium" ocean-view cabins on the new Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess that measure 172 square feet and have unusual slanting windows.

Balcony cabins on Princess Cruises ships

Balcony cabins are what everyone wants these days, and Princess is delivering with huge numbers of balcony cabins on all its newest ships. On the line's new Royal Class series of ships, which began debuting in 2013, nearly 80% of rooms are balcony cabins.

On these newer vessels — Royal Princess, Regal Princess, Majestic Princess, Sky Princess, Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess — the typical balcony cabin has an interior space of 181 square feet plus a balcony that measures 41 square feet (for a total of 222 square feet). However, there also are bigger "premium deluxe balcony" cabins that can measure as much as 233 square feet on the inside (not including the balcony). Some of these have larger-than-normal balconies that can stretch the total square footage to 312 square feet.

princess alaska cruise staterooms

In addition, the Royal Class vessels have even larger balcony cabins that Princess calls mini-suites. Including their balcony space, these cabins measure anywhere from 299 to 329 square feet. While these mini-suite cabins have the word "suite" in their name, we are including them in the balcony cabin category as they generally resemble very large balcony cabins vs. true suites.

Related: Everything to know about the Princess Captain's Club loyalty program

The typical Princess balcony cabin has twin beds that can be converted into a queen bed, a built-in desk with a chair and a built-in miniature refrigerator. In addition to beds, a desk and a miniature fridge, premium balcony cabins have a seating area with a sofa bed that can be used for a third passenger in the room. Some also have a pull-down bunk that can accommodate a fourth person.

Suites on Princess Cruises ships

As mentioned above, Princess ships generally have fewer suites than the ships operated by some of its biggest competitors. The line also isn't known for particularly giant suites.

Princess's three newest ships — Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess — have the line's first truly large standalone suites, dubbed Sky Suites. There are two of them on each of the vessels, and they measure a generous 1,792 square feet (though more than half of that space is taken up by a huge wraparound balcony). With two bedrooms plus a living room with a pullout sofa, the Sky Suites are the first Princess accommodations designed for up to five people.

Still, even the Sky Suites on Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess aren't the sort of truly epic suites with huge interior living spaces that you'll find on the latest ships from such competitors as Celebrity and Royal Caribbean. The latest Celebrity vessels, for instance, offer so-called Iconic Suites that have twice as much interior space as the Sky Suites.

princess alaska cruise staterooms

If you're the kind of cruiser who is only happy in a cabin of truly giant proportions (and are willing to pay up for it), Princess probably isn't your line.

Still, you'll find at least a few suites of a decent size on every Princess ship. The line's seven Grand Class vessels each offer two "family suites" at their fronts that can be created by connecting a mini-suite with an adjacent inside cabin to create a six- to eight-person complex.

Each of the line's Royal Class ships (the line's six newest ships) has at least 36 suites.

Related: 7 reasons you should splurge for a suite on a cruise

Bottom line

Princess offers a relatively wide range of cabins on its ships, including lots of the sort of cabins that everyone wants — balcony cabins. If you're a fan of balcony cabins, you'll find plenty of options on Princess ships, including standard size balcony cabins and bigger "premium" balcony cabins. You'll also find a lot of larger "mini-suite" balcony cabins on Princess ships. However, you won't find a lot of truly large suites with multiple rooms.

What is the Princess MedallionClass?

The Princess MedallionClass is a free tool for all guests to help enhance your experience while on board.

After booking your cruise, you’ll want to download the Princess MedallionClass app onto your mobile device.

You can get started right away by uploading your travel documents and filling in your personal information to help streamline the embarkation process. It saved us so much time when boarding the ship!

Once you complete the Travel Checklist provided on the app, you will be OceanReady and can order your free Medallion to be sent to your home prior to your departure.

You also have the option to pick up the Medallion at the cruise port, but check-in will be expedited if you already have it before you arrive.

Princess Medallion

The Princess Medallion is a quarter-sized device that has truly revolutionized the cruising experience.

It is unique to Princess Cruises and you won’t find anything like it on other ships.

The Medallion comes with a free lanyard, or you can choose to purchase a wearable accessory once you are on board.

Some of the options include a necklace, bracelet, clip, or sports band. We loved the sports band!

All of your information is stored in this little device that is waterproof, sand-proof, and sun-proof.

This is what you will scan when you are getting on and off the ship. It also has several other unique and helpful features.

Your Medallion is what you’ll use to unlock your stateroom door. It is completely touchless and will unlock your door as soon as you approach your room.

Your Medallion also has a location-based feature that acts as a tracker.

If you order a drink or a bite to eat from OceanNow on the Princess app, your server will be able to find you anywhere on the ship to deliver it to you.

We were up on the top deck and ordered a drink but decided to go down to the library to play Scrabble.

Instead of having to wait for our drink to get delivered, the server was able to find us 9 floors down in the library!

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Princess Medallion #simplywander

There are also interactive screens, called ship portals, on each level by the elevators.

You can scan your Medallion at the portal and it will pull up a customized screen.

Here you can track your travel companions to see where they are hanging out at on the ship.

Our kids are older and enjoyed having some independence on the ship, so it gave me peace of mind to know where they were.

You can also play a variety of games on the portal with PlayOcean. There is even a digital scavenger hunt around the ship.

PlayOcean is linked to your Medallion so that it keeps track of your score. It even shows the high scores on the ship so that you can compete with others.

Princess MedallionClass app

The MedallionClass app is also very helpful throughout your cruise.

Here you will find the JourneyView that lists all of the activities offered throughout each day.

It allows you to bookmark the ones you would like to attend so that you don’t miss a single event.

The OceanCompass can be found on the app and will help you find your way around the ship. It also allows you to message or locate friends or family that you are traveling with.

You can even make dining reservations, order food, book excursions, and much more through the app.

What are the staterooms like on the Royal Princess cruise ship?

Each ship has several room options, including interior rooms, balcony rooms, deluxe balconies, mini-suites, and full-suites.

We booked the mini suite on board the Royal Princess , and it was so spacious and beautiful.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Mini-suite #simplywander

The 323-square-foot suite features a queen bed, or two twin beds, and a sitting area with a couch that converts to a sofa bed.

The bathroom is quite roomy with a full-sized bath and a massage shower head. It also has generous closet space, a desk, a mini fridge, and two flat-screen televisions.

Our favorite feature, however, is the balcony. My number one tip when taking a Princess Alaska cruise is to splurge for a room with a balcony.

There is nothing quite like waking up to the view of a glacier right outside your bedroom or enjoying a peaceful sunset all to yourself.

Each room on the Royal Princess cruise ship also features the Princess Luxury Bed.

These beds were designed with the help of a board-certified sleep expert and offer the ultimate comfort.

The scientifically engineered mattresses are topped with a two-inch pillow top, Jacquard-woven linens, fluffy duvets, and the most comfortable pillow you’ll ever sleep on.

I guarantee that you’ll get a good night’s sleep and wake up feeling refreshed every morning of your cruise!

The rooms are cleaned daily by the attentive staff, and the beds are turned down every evening. They will even set up the sofa bed and take it down each morning.

If you book a suite with the Reserve Collection, you’ll receive additional perks like access to the concierge lounge, premier dining benefits, priority embarking and disembarking, and so much more.

What is the food like on the Royal Princess cruise ship?

We were so impressed with the food on the Royal Princess! There are so many dining options to choose from, and all the food we tried was so fresh and delicious.

If you want a quick meal on the outdoor deck, head to the Trident Grill for a burger.

Or grab a quick slice of pizza from Prego Pizzeria and a piña colada from the Mermaid’s Tail bar to enjoy poolside.

Our boys also made sure to get a soft-serve ice cream cone from Swirls Ice Cream Bar every day!

Alfredo’s is a cozy pizzeria that serves mouthwatering hand-tossed pizza.

Reservations are recommended for the main dining rooms and can be done on the MedallionClass app.

There will be two evenings at sea that are designated as formal nights and it’s a fun excuse to dress up for dinner.

I loved seeing our boys all dressed up, even if they complained about wearing a tie!

Afternoon tea is also held one of the days at sea.

You can order room service 24 hours a day at no extra charge. You can also have food delivered to you wherever you are on the ship through the MedallionClass app.

Is the specialty dining worth it on the Royal Princess?

In addition to the included dining options, there are also specialty restaurants that guests can choose to experience for an additional cover charge.

I would highly recommend making reservations for at least one of the specialty restaurants while at sea.

The elevated dining experience is sure to make your cruise even more memorable.

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or just looking to make memories together as a family, a specialty dining experience is the perfect way to share that special love!

A few of our favorites include Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria, Crown Grill steakhouse, Ocean Terrace seafood bar, and the Chef’s Table Lumiere dinner.

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria

Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria is a family-style restaurant that serves up the freshest authentic Italian cuisine.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

It was even voted as one of the “Best Cruise Ship Specialty Restaurants” at sea by USA Today .

Each dish is bursting with flavor, and the presentation is impeccable.

Try one of their signature handmade pasta dishes, fresh seafood, or filet mignon. Be sure to save room for the dessert- the tiramisu will melt in your mouth!

If you are seated by a window, you may even see a whale!

We saw a whale twice during our dinner and it added an extra element of magic to our already memorable night.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Sabatini's Italian Trattoria #simplywander

Another perk of booking a suite is that suite guests get the privilege of enjoying breakfast at Sabatini’s.

You have to order the Apple Cinnamon Brioche French Toast! The toast was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.

Crown Grill

Crown Grill is a gourmet American steakhouse specializing in tender steaks right off the grill.

I also highly recommend the Surf & Turf with an 8 oz filet mignon and 6-7 oz lobster tail.

The menu is priced a la carte so you can order your favorite sushi rolls to enjoy while listening to the live music at the adjacent Crooner’s Bar.

Chef’s Table Lumiere

If you are celebrating a special event while at sea, I highly recommend reserving a seat at the Chef’s Table Lumiere.

It truly is a memorable dining experience. We enjoyed a nice date night onboard while our youngest had a great time hanging out at Camp Discovery.

The evening will start with champagne and hor d’oeuvres at the Wheelhouse Bar led by the Executive Sous Chef and the Director of Restaurant Operations.

You’ll then proceed to the kitchen where you’ll get an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the galley.

The Executive Chef will even come out between courses to share a little bit about his culinary creations.

Seating is limited for this event, so be sure to make a reservation as soon as you get on board if this is something you are interested in doing.

Gelato Shop

The Gelato Shop is located near the Piazza and is the best place to go for a sweet treat.

There is a nominal fee for their hand-scooped authentic Italian gelato.

However, if you upgrade to the Princess Plus package, you receive special perks like two free specialty desserts a day.

This includes the gourmet milkshakes from the Gelato Shop that are to die for! Of course, they are best enjoyed with a sunset view from your balcony.

Is an Alaskan cruise good for families?

The answer to this question is a resounding YES! A cruise is the perfect family vacation.

We have traveled all over the world as a family and my kids said that this was one of their favorite trips ever. It is the perfect way to create lasting memories together as a family!

It is such a great value, considering it includes all of your accommodations, food, entertainment, childcare, and transportation to a different port every day.

There is so much on board to keep everyone of all ages entertained.

Older kids will especially appreciate the freedom to roam around and enjoy the extra independence you won’t find on other vacations.

An Alaskan cruise will also give your kids the opportunity to experience nature and culture with so many amazing excursions available at the ports.

Camp Discovery is the designated kid and teen center onboard the Royal Princess cruise ship. You’ll find spaces geared for 3 different age groups.

The Treehouse is for kids ages 3-7 years.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Camp Discovery #simplywander

The Lodge is for kids 8-12.

And the Beach House is a teen hang-out for youth ages 13-17 years.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Camp Discovery #simplywander

They are packed with everything kids love including an air hockey table, Skee-ball, foosball, video and computer games, board games, movies, crafts, and more.

What to Expect on a Royal Princess Alaska Cruise | Camp Discovery #simplywander

The centers are run by the friendly staff and they have so many fun activities planned throughout the day.

Older kids sign themselves in and out with a parent’s permission, but younger kids will need to be signed in and out by a parent for safety reasons.

Parents will especially love being able to enjoy a date night with a quiet dinner and evening show while the kids are having fun at the center.

I will say that an Alaskan cruise is often considered to be geared more toward the older generation.

It is true that you won’t see as many kids onboard, but we also appreciated that there wasn’t the spring break party vibe that you find on many Caribbean cruises.

We still felt like there were plenty of things to do for families and our Alaskan cruise quickly became one of our most memorable family vacations!

Which Princess Alaska cruise is the best?

There are several different Princess Alaska Cruises to choose from so it may be hard to decide which one is best.

However, there are a few things you need to consider. Including, what port the cruise leaves from, the length of the cruise, and what ports the ship will stop at along the way.

The Princess Alaska cruises generally depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, BC so you’ll need to consider the cost of flights to either cruise terminal when choosing your trip.

You can also choose between a roundtrip cruise or a one-way southbound or northbound cruise.

If you book a one-way cruise, you will be able to experience more of Alaska as you cruise to Anchorage. However, you will also need to get a plane ticket in or out of Anchorage.

The length of the cruise varies from a short 4-day Sampler to a 14-day Grand Adventure. I would recommend a 7-day cruise, especially if it is your first time.

This will give you enough time to fully experience what Alaska has to offer, but it isn’t too long if you are worried about your sea legs.

When considering what ports you would like to visit, the must-see stops (especially on your first trip) are Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan.

I would also highly recommend booking a cruise that spends a day cruising through Glacier Bay National Park.

This is one of the most remote national parks that can only be accessed by plane or boat.

Princess Cruises is one of the only cruise lines that has a concession contract to visit the park, and you do not want to miss it!

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is the best month to go on an Alaskan cruise? The Alaskan cruise season is relatively short from April-October. However, the best time to go is Mid-May to Mid-September when the weather is warmer and the whales start migrating back to Alaska. Just keep in mind that the weather is better in the summer months, but the rates and crowds are better in the spring and fall.
  • Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise? Yes. Even if you are a US citizen, you will still need a passport as every Alaskan cruise makes a stop in either Vancouver or Victoria, BC.
  • What should I pack for an Alaskan cruise? Even if you are visiting in the summer, you will want to dress in layers. I would recommend a lightweight puffer jacket that is easy to roll up and pack, as well as layers to wear underneath. You’ll want warm yet comfortable clothes to wear on the excursions. For the cruise ship, don’t forget a swimsuit and flip-flops if you plan to go in the pool or hot tub. You’ll also want to pack a few nice dresses or suits for the formal nights.
  • What is the average temperature on an Alaskan cruise? The average temperature in Alaska during late spring and early fall is in the 50s. During the summer months, the temperatures are generally in the 60s, so dress accordingly. Keep in mind that Alaska also experiences between 17-20 hours of daylight in the summer months.
  • When is the best time to see whales on an Alaskan cruise? Whales begin migrating back from Hawaii as early as April and stay in Alaska until as late as November. However, you will have the best chance of seeing whales from May-September.
  • Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaskan cruise? Winter is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Alaska. However, it is possible to see the aurora borealis on a late September cruise if the conditions are right.

I hope this guide will help you to know what to expect on an Alaskan cruise onboard the Royal Princess. It is sure to be one of your most memorable experiences!

My Alaskan Cruise Experience on Discovery Princess (Review + Real Photos)

Site under maintenance, please excuse our appearance.

This article’s recommendations may include affiliate links.

It was always my bucket list dream to visit every US state – especially the country’s largest state: Alaska! But Alaska being the largest state meant I also had no idea where to start when it came to planning an Alaska adventure. That’s why I booked an Alaskan cruise with Princess Cruises to help guide me.

coming back to the large cruise ship on a small boat to alaskan cruise

Disclosure: I sailed to Alaska on Discovery Princess, hosted by Princess Cruises. This review is based on my own experiences.

In July, I went on a summer Alaskan cruise on Princess Cruises’ newest ship: Discovery Princess , and I am excited to tell you all about it and show you real photos too.

If you want to learn more about cruises to Alaska, an inside scoop on the new Discovery Princess, and insight on what it is truly like to be on an Alaskan cruise ship, you’re in the right place.

Alaskan Cruise Itinerary on Princess Cruises

Alaskan cruise route details

If you are thinking about taking an Alaskan cruise you are probably wondering which routes are better, and which departure ports and ports of call are best too. The answer is, they are all great options – it just depends on what your travel needs are.

the Alaskan cruise route I chose:

  • Route: Alaska Inside Passage
  • Ports of Call: Ketchikan, Endicott Arm + Dawes Glacier (scenic cruising), Juneau, Skagway (we ended up rerouting to Sitka on my sailing), Victoria BC
  • Ship: Discovery Princess
  • Duration: 7 days
  • Departure Port: Seattle round trip

spiral stairs and luxurious decor in the piazza lobby

There are a number of Alaska Ports of Call options available to choose from on Princess Cruises, depending on the itinerary and ship you choose.

  • Definition: A cruise port of call is a stop along the voyage route.
  • Aboard Princess’ newest ship: Discovery Princess and along the sailing route I went with, the 7-day Alaska Inside Passage itinerary provided an opportunity to explore glaciers, wildlife, culture and history, and local food.

Discovery princess Rooms and Review

What room to get on an Alaska Cruise

I stayed in a standard Balcony stateroom on the 11th floor (Baja deck) and wouldn’t change a thing!

If you are on a budget, the low price of an interior or ocean-view room may feel most appealing to you (after all, you can indulge in the Discovery Princess’ panoramic views throughout the ship). But if you have the ability to upgrade I would 100% recommend a balcony room at a minimum.

Why I prefer a balcony room

An Alaskan cruise has tons of scenery. Imagine waking up to a stunning landscape as your captain pulls into the next port of call.

Marine wildlife sightings are sporadic. All of my whale sightings were from my balcony while I was getting ready for dinner. I would’ve missed it otherwise!

The balcony rooms are also quite spacious. My husband and I settled in nicely and I loved having a desk and refrigerator with plenty of closet room and walking space.

With a balcony, we were able to book a special romantic breakfast from our room too, set up for us with a scenic view.

Perks for your stateroom on Discovery Princess

You can order free robes for your room, and room service is complimentary too! There are also free laundromats on each floor.

We made the most of our closet and shelf space and immediately unpacked our bags to maximize space.

Be sure to allow your stateroom Steward to come in each day and evening to help put away extra decor pillows and turn down the room for bed — this makes it even more spacious.

Room Types on Discovery Princess

Interior Room: these are the lowest priced options and usually what the advertised price of a sailing shows on a website. You still get a comfortable bed, closet, bathroom, and tv, but you’ll have to enjoy the view on the top deck of the ship.

Oceanview: if you want a view but don’t need fresh air and a breeze across your face (or don’t mind an obstructed balcony), an ocean view window might suit you just fine.

Balcony: there is a standard version, a deluxe version with a couch, or a premium deluxe version with a couch and a larger balcony. I stayed in the standard balcony stateroom, which I thought was a perfect size for us. For reference, I am 5’9 and my husband is 6’0, and both average weight.

Mini-suite: these offer larger balcony sizes, separate sitting areas with a sofa bed, and premium amenities.

Suite: you can choose from Vista, Premium, or Penthouse suites if you would like to splurge on your Alaskan cruise

Things to Do on Discovery Princess

What is there to do on a Princess Cruise to Alaska?

Activities on the Discovery Princess

For cruises longer than 3 nights (or farther distances), it is common to wonder whether there is enough to do on a cruise ship to stay entertained. Especially when there are multiple at-sea days.

I loved at-sea days on Discovery Princess because it was a good time to wind down, enjoy the ship’s facilities, and even book special services like a massage or pedicure (I did both!)

laying on spa sofa relaxation room wearing robe on Princess Cruise Discovery

On the Discovery Princess Alaskan cruise, there are also lots of activities to enjoy from early in the morning through the evening. They include:

Active/Sports:

  • Gym with fitness and meditation classes available
  • Basketball court
  • Mini golf
  • Running track on the top deck
  • Outdoor ping pong tables

playing mini golf in the middle of the ocean on a cruise ship

Wellness activities:

  • Spa and salon services
  • Non-surgical cosmetic services
  • Sauna day pass at the Enclave
  • The Sanctuary day pass
  • Complimentary health and wellness workshops

sitting in a spa with multiple baths

Games/events:

  • Competitions like bag toss, floating egg, and more
  • Movies on the big screen on the top deck outside
  • Cocktail presentations
  • Evening shows at the theater
  • Casino access

Dining Options with Discovery Princess

What are the dining options on Discovery Princess Alaskan cruise?

I was really impressed with the dining experience aboard the Discovery Princess. There is a nice mix of dining rooms and eateries included in the base price and a fantastic selection of specialty restaurants for an additional fee.

My favorites were by far the French bistro, Crown Grille, and Sabatini’s Italian trattoria (all three are specialty dining), as well as Slice Pizzeria and the International Cafe (both included for free with your sailing).

woman drinking red wine and eating steak in restaurant

Here is a breakdown of the dining options on the ship, including what is free and included in the standard sailing package, and what requires an upgrade or premium package.

Free Dining options on Discovery Princess

  • 3 main dining rooms with a la carte dining (Ketchikan, Skagway, and Juneau)
  • 2 bistros with buffet-style dining (World Market and Horizon Bistro)
  • Gigi’s Pizzeria (a la carte dining)
  • International Cafe (24 hours with pastries and rotating food items)
  • Outdoor eateries on the top deck (Salty Dog Grille, Slice Pizzeria)
  • Swirls Ice Cream
  • The Pastry Shop

fancy dining with a large menu and dressed up

At-cost Dining with Discovery Princess

  • Sabatini’s Italian Trattoria
  • Bistro Sur la Mer (French bistro)
  • Crown Grille (steak house)
  • Ocean Terrace seafood bar (a la carte cost)

Other dining perks

If you have a full suite or mini-suite you get Club Class access to the Skagway dining room, which means you don’t have to make reservations and have dedicated waitstaff, exclusive menu items, and expedited service. On busy dinner nights this is absolutely worth it (I had access as press to check it out for myself and used it multiple times).

Shore Excursions with Princess Cruise – Alaska Options

Are the Princess Cruise shore excursions worth it for your Alaskan cruise?

It is no secret that the cost of excursions can add up when it comes to planning big adventures like an Alaska trip. The prices can range from approximately $15 to $800 from what I saw, depending on the excursion.

But, for most people on cruises, we want the help and guidance of a company like Princess Cruises who knows which Port of Call is best for which activities. The access, convenience, and expertise can make it worth it.

What kind of excursions are on a Discovery Princess Alaskan cruise?

Princess Cruises offer a mix of wildlife, local/cultural, food, and adventure tours. It is actually quite a large library of options and can get overwhelming if you aren’t sure what you want.

Read on for my tips on which ones to get…

The best tours to book on an Alaskan Cruise

I am still on cloud nine after some of my tours with Princess Cruises. Here are some I recommend out of the ones I tried, as well as any I would definitely choose the next time.

Helicopter Glacier & Dog Sledding Tour

I 100% recommend splurging on a helicopter tour over glacial planes and fjords in Juneau. That was top 5 most memorable things I’ve ever done. Paired with a dog sledding experience on this particular excursion, it is definitely bucket list worthy.

Seating note: Helicopters can load up to 5-6 passengers so you are not guaranteed a window seat. Make sure you have a good zoom lens if you want photos. I was in the middle with 3 other passengers and am glad I had a good camera!

huskie dogs, mountains, snow, american flag

Kayaking Tour

I did a sea kayaking tour in Sitka and, despite the rain, had so much fun! Kayaking of any sort is a great group activity that helps you get active without too much walking. The sea kayaking tour provided tandem kayaks which is super fun for a family or couples.

Bear Watching Tour

Wildlife tours in general are perfect excursions for an Alaska cruise. I booked my tours too late and the bear-watching ones were sold out. If I was to do this tour again, I’d definitely sign up for a bear tour.

I thought I’d see them by chance (outside of a tour) but that didn’t happen, so doing a tour that takes you to a viewing platform where you can watch bears catch their salmon dinner would be so fun!

Culture Tour

There are thousands of indigenous peoples native to Alaska. You can take a culture tour for a low-impact experience that provides insight to the original people who still inhabit Alaska.

I enjoyed learning about the history of Totems and their significance in passing down stories across generations and about the Tlingit Nation.

Tips for choosing excursions with Princess Cruises

  • Reserve your excursions early. I was shocked at how quickly tours booked up, and I selected mine about a month out.
  • Choose activities you wouldn’t normally do; get outside of your comfort zone! My most memorable excursion was a helicopter ride over glaciers and fjords that landed on a dog sledding camp – like, what!? Amazing.
  • Remember that excursions booked through the cruise have a guaranteed return (trust me, I saw it in real life). If your tour runs late the ship WILL wait for you if it was booked through the ship. That alone is super important because we definitely saw a tour show up late.

Discovery Princess Review: Costs, Value, and more

Cost, amenities, cruise facilities, etc.

My Alaskan cruise on the Discovery Princess really brought me up to speed on what cruising is like in 2022 and I loved it! I can’t wait for my next cruise adventure and am so glad I went during the summer.

Not exaggerating, my husband and I immediately went home and started looking up other cruise itineraries to enjoy for our birthdays, holidays, and more. Our text messages and my DMs were full of questions and people excited about the prospect of cruising for themselves.

Check out my three Instagram videos from the trip here:

  • About the ship
  • About the experience
  • About one of my tours

My highlights of this Alaskan cruise

  • A sailing route to multiple cities I would’ve otherwise not have visited
  • A stunning balcony room with 24/7 serene views
  • Award-winning chefs with delicious dining options
  • Access to bucket list excursions
  • Life at sea!

What does an Alaskan Cruise cost?

This was a common question I received, though there is no set answer because it depends on the season, itinerary you choose, packages onboard, and shore excursions.

Yes, you can totally do this cruise for less than $1,000 if you don’t add on tours and extras (I recall the base price for an interior room on my sailing was $499, for example). But….you can also do it for significantly more. It all depends on your needs, which is what I love because there are so many options.

That said, if you wanted to do close to the exact trip I did, I recommend you estimate about $2,500 per person for the experience.

This will account for:

  • standard balcony room
  • plus drink package
  • wifi package
  • specialty dining costs
  • shore excursions
  • crew gratuity
  • taxes and fees

Is cruising a great deal?

Yes! With the costs of travel accommodations skyrocketing for some destinations, cruising is more appealing than ever.

Expert tip: if you want to make the most of your sailing experience, be sure to look objectively at cruise offerings. I recommend the following to consider adding on to your booking:

  • Beverage package: I got the Plus Beverage package for up to 15 drinks per day (valued at $12 max each), which was more than enough!
  • Wifi package: there are multiple options here depending on the number of devices, but it is totally worth having so you can check emails, make calls, text while at sea.
  • Specialty dining: I found that most specialty restaurants are $29/pp and gelato and sushi run for about $3.50 a piece.

To save money on these essentials, I suggest upgrading to Princess Plus so that your drinks package, wifi for 1 device, and tips for the crew, are included. There’s also Princess Premiere if you want more (like 2 specialty restaurants per guest, more wifi devices, a higher drink limit, and unlimited photo package).

More ways to save on Princess Cruises

I definitely recommend getting on the Princess Cruises newsletter to be alerted about sales and last-minute availability on sailings.

I would also recommend inviting a 3rd or 4th person in your room so you can split your costs (they are often discounted or free ).

Last, I recommend you become flexible with dates ! Some dates will be cheaper than others, depending on the season.

What about COVID + cruising?

[This answer is about my sailing specifically. Check with Princess Cruises for up-to-date information.]

For my sailing during 2022, Princess Cruises took heed to CDC regulations: they required us passengers to show proof of vaccination and a negative PCR or Antigen test in order to board the ship.

There were also hand-sanitizing stations throughout the ship and the buffet bistros had hand-washing stations at each entrance.

Ship staff all wore their masks, though masks were optional for passengers. I personally chose to wear my mask throughout the ship and only removed it in my room, the spa, and at meals or outside areas.

Update 2023: unless traveling to destinations that specifically require it, most cruises have returned to normal operations without vaccine and testing requirements.

hand washing station before entering the dining hall on the cruise ship

Would I do this cruise again?

A few people have asked me this too! The answer is yes. I would do an Alaskan cruise again (next time, a glacier/national park route!) and I would totally sail with Princess Cruises again. It is one of our fondest travel memories as a couple and we know of a few people who were inspired by our trip and booked one for the next year!

I like that Princess Cruises had plenty of activity options for adults, and there wasn’t an overwhelming amount of children (it didn’t feel like a theme park). This crowd had more couples and adult singles, and if there were kids they were old enough to hang in the kids/teen area on their own.

Enjoy your Alaska cruise!

I hope my real review of my Alaska cruise with Princess Cruises gave you a taste of my experience and helped answer any questions you might have! Let me know what cruises you are considering with Princess Cruises, and be sure to try the new Discovery Princess.

Handicap cabins are larger-sized (in comparison to the category's standard), ADA-certified, and located close to elevators.

Follows the review of Star Princess staterooms as amenities, furniture and included (complimentary) services.

Princess Cruises debuted on SPHERE-class ships "Reserve Collection" Mini-Suites (with exclusive access to a private restaurant) and the "Signature Collection" staterooms (suite categories ) featuring premium cabin amenities and exclusive access to Signature facilities (Restaurant, Lounge, Sundeck) plus a private area at The Sanctuary (adults-only sundeck and relaxation complex fitted with loungers and cabanas).

The new resort-style "Reserve Collection Cabana" cabins feature a balcony-cabana combo as the open-air veranda is accessed via a large outdoor patio lounge.

Most of the new Star Princess ship's staterooms are quads (accommodating max 4 passengers) - only Signature Sky Suites are 5-person. Unlike the preceding ROYAL-class Princess ships (previously the fleet's largest), the SPHERE-class Star Princess has outside cabins without balconies (category Premium Oceanview) which are fitted with a large Picture Window (non-opening).

All balcony cabins are with floor-ceiling sliding glass doors opening to a private step-out veranda. Most cabin balconies are relatively small (sized 35 ft2 / 3 m2) and narrow, furnished with footstools, 2x patio chairs, 1x round table. Balcony railings are either of toughened glass or solid steel. Balcony staterooms have ample closet space, bathroom (WC-shower), double sofabed.

Star Princess' Suites are in 6 types - Signature Sky (SO), Signature Owners (S2), Signature Penthouse (S4), Signature (S9), Cabana Mini-Suites (C1-C2 Reserve, CA-CB) and the rest are Mini-Suites (M1-M2 Reserve, MA, MD). Bonus amenities offered in all Suites include deluxe mattresses/toppers/pillows/linens, 2x HDTVs, portable hairdryer, Nespresso coffee machine, upgraded bathroom amenities (massage showerheads, luxury bath products, luxury bathrobes, terry towels), luxury patio furniture on the terrace. As additional Suite-only perks are offered: choice of 3 deluxe mattresses, iPod docking station, padded loungers on the balcony, bathroom with separate shower stall and separate bathtub, various complimentary amenities and priority services.

Bonus perks/complimentary amenities provided to all Signature-class suites include priority services (check-in, service desk line, debarkation, tenderboat boarding (embarking/disembarking the ship's tenders), onboard dining and shore excursion reservations), in-cabin dining (afternoon tea, canapes), Champagne bottle and Chef's welcome goodies (upon arrival/served on embarkation day), CD/DVD player (access to media library), fresh flowers, upgraded bath products, exclusive amenities (breakfast in Sabatinis, Elite Lounge), Spa Thermal Suite, specialty restaurant dining (on embarkation evening), extended Room Service (full-menu ordering), extended turndown service (wrapped premium chocolates or chocolate-dipped strawberries).

Signature Sky Suites (aft on Deck 16) are 2-room cabins, each with a large terrace, walk-in closet (ample storage space), living room (sofabed, desk, vanity, table, armchairs), separate bedroom, two bathrooms (WC, shower, whirlpool bathtub, double-sink vanity, marble countertops and floors), powder room.

All Star Princess cabins as standard/complimentary amenities offer living area (mirrored vanity, desk, seating), 2 twin beds convertible to Queen-size double bed (additional beds in select cabins provide for 3rd/4th passenger), deluxe bedding sets (100% Egyptian cotton linens/high-thread count), wardrobe, desk, smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies), direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), hairdryer, bath products (shampoo, body lotion, conditioner), minibar/refrigerator, individual air-conditioning, evening turndown service (wrapped chocolates on the pillows), complimentary 24-hour room service.

All staterooms are fitted with the signature "Princess Luxury Bed". Princess' "cruise bed" was developed in collaboration with PhD Michael Breus (commonly known as The Sleep Doctor) and the designer Candice Olson. The new cabin beds feature a luxury pillow-top mattress, individually wrapped coils (reducing surface sway) and hypoallergenic duvets.

Passenger-use launderettes (laundromats) are located on decks 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16. These are self-service laundry rooms with ironing boards and detergent being provided.

The cabin category "Club Class Mini-Suite" was rolled out fleetwide in 2017. These "VIP-guest" Mini-Suites offer the following complimentary services and amenities - Club Class Dining, exclusive lounge access, complimentary in-cabin dining (hors-d'oeuvres), priority embarkation/disembarkation/tendering. Club Class Dining includes a separate area part of the MDR (main dining room) reserved for Club Suite guests only. The exclusive dining experience includes expedited seating, dedicated waiter staff service, exclusive menu (featuring chef's specials), tableside preparation of some dishes. Club Class Dining is available for breakfast and dinner every day, and also for lunch on sea days only.

Note: Club Class staterooms on Princess Cruises' SPHERE ships are called "Reserve Collection Staterooms".

Majestic Princess Review on an Alaska Cruise

By: Dori Saltzman · Updated On: November 2, 2023

When it comes to Alaska cruising there are two cruise lines that have been doing it longer than anyone else: Holland America and Princess Cruises. I looked forward to this opportunity to finally cruise again, and to share my Majestic Princess review in detail.

With such a long history of cruising to Alaska, both companies claim to be able to provide experiences on their Alaska cruises that no other cruise line can duplicate. I’ve always wanted to know if that was true.

Not to mention, the description of Princess’ “North to Alaska” program always sounds so enriching!

From food to culture to onboard enrichment by local Alaskans, Princess Cruises’ “North to Alaska” program provides passengers with a deeper insight into The Last Frontier, our 49th state.

Princess Cruises Majestic Princess Alaska cruise in Glacier Bay

In This Post...

Despite having taken an Alaska cruise three times before with other cruise lines, an excellent deal (and some FCCs) were enough to get my husband and me onboard for a mid-August sailing. We looked forward to trying a Princess Alaska cruise and our first experience aboard Majestic Princess .

Our itinerary was a one-week Alaska Inside Passage cruise, roundtrip from Seattle. The voyage included three port days, two full sea days, and a half-day of spectacular scenic cruising in Glacier Bay.

Our ports included:

Because our sailing was one of the “special” Alaska cruises permitted by the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act, the ship was not required to stop at any Canadian port of call as would be typical of a roundtrip Seattle cruise.

Fast Facts – Majestic Princess

Year built : 2017 Year refurbished : n/a Weight: 143,700 gross tons Decks: 19 Passengers at double occupancy: 3,560 Crew : 1,346 Total staterooms: 1,780

COVID-19 Protocols

As with all Princess Cruise sailings, you must be vaccinated to get onboard Majestic Princess . The line will make some exceptions (up to 5% of the total capacity) for those who can not get vaccinated for medical reasons and for children. But you must apply for an exception ahead of time and it’s not guaranteed.

A negative pre-cruise COVID test is required to board the ship. The test must have been administered within 72 hours before your sailing and must be either a PCR test or an antigen test.

Mask wearing is required onboard except when outside or actively eating or drinking in a restaurant or bar. We saw this rule flouted several times, but especially at night in the casino when almost no one wore a mask.

Welcome Aboard Princess Cruises’ Majestic Princess

Our embarkation at the Seattle cruise port was fast and easy despite being the first Majestic Princess cruise departure to require pre-cruise COVID-19 testing.

All Princess ships are Medallion-class. That means everything is digital!

You need to have the Medallion app downloaded onto your phone. And, assuming you filled out all the information requested in the app and have uploaded the appropriate photos, all you need to show at the port is your passport, vaccine card, and proof of negative COVID-19 test.

READ MORE:   Do You Need a Passport for an Alaska cruise?

It’s not the most user-friendly app, but having been on several previous Princess cruises, most of my information was already there. All I had to update were some sailing specific requests (dining and bed preferences, traveling companions, etc.).

princess alaska cruise staterooms

From the moment we got to the port to getting onboard took maybe a half hour. Most of that time was spent on line waiting to get to check in and go through the security baggage check.

INSIDER TIP: If you’re having any trouble with your Medallion App or want to get on to Wi-Fi right away, head straight to the OceanFront desk on deck 7, midship. The first two days here are packed and the wait can be a bit long. If you only want to get online and don’t need help with the app, head to the Internet café on deck 6, midship, where someone can help set you up.

First Impressions

My first cruise after an 18-month “pause” due to COVID-19, I had high expectations for this Majestic Princess sailing. I’ve been on Princess ships before, including other Royal-class ships and knew to expect gorgeous hardware, the most comfortable bed at sea, and excellent service.

And my first glimpse of the ship once onboard didn’t disappoint. Built in 2017, Majestic Princess is a beautiful example of the direction the line has been moving in since it launched Royal Princess in 2013.

Decked out in neutral shades of gold, blue and white, the ship is shiny and beautiful. The atrium rises three-levels and is full of light. I’m in love with the small pools of water that partially surround two of the glass staircases. Such an elegant touch, reminiscent of a true outdoor piazza.

Majestic Princess Piazza with passengers listening to music

It didn’t take long to spot one of the main differences between Majestic Princess and other Princess ships: there’s lots of Chinese writing! That’s because Majestic Princess was built specifically for the Chinese cruise market and has been sailing almost exclusively in Asia since it launched.

Though the ship will spend the next year or so in North America and then move to Australia, the line didn’t not remove all the signs of its Chinese past. Most signage is in English and Chinese, including on the elevators.

Painting of a colorful dragon on Majestic Princess outdoor deck.

Plus, you’ll encounter Chinese style artwork and other design elements throughout the ship. (There’s a gorgeous painted dragon on an upper outside deck that makes for a great photo-op!)

By the way, the bed didn’t disappoint. So comfortable!

Service on the other hand, was hit or miss, which is not something I expect from Princess Cruises. Everyone was friendly and happy to have us onboard, but there were times the service felt, well, rusty. Like crew had forgotten how to do their jobs during the long pause.

Bartenders charged the wrong prices. Waiters forgot to ask how we wanted something cooked. Dishes we ordered were forgotten and never brought out.

Standard Balcony Stateroom

One fun thing about all staterooms on Princess ships. The doors can only be opened using your wearable OceanMedallion device (there are no cruise cards).

The locking mechanism has a sensor built into it that picks up your OceanMedallion’s signal before you get there. By the time you’re standing in front of your room, the door is unlocked and all you have to do is open it.

My standard balcony stateroom on Majestic Princess was comfortable. Located on Deck 9, the room had a queen-sized bed with two nightstands (each with two drawers), a desk (with three drawers) and a piece of furniture that hides that mini-fridge, has two small storage shelves, and space on top to pile things.

It’s about 220 square feet in size, which is slightly larger than the average balcony cabin on other mainstream ships.

And, did I already mention the bed? Seriously, if you’ve never been on a Princess ship before, the beds are some of the most comfortable at sea.

Stateroom Amenities

You’ll find outlets at the desk and on one side of the bed. (In our case, that was the side of the bed closest to the desk.) Outlets are U.S. and European style, plus there are two USB ports for charging your cell phone.

Thankfully, we’d brought a long enough USB cord that I could plug in to the USB port on my husband’s side of the bed and stretch it behind the pillows so that I could charge my phone from my side of the bed.

Image of of balcony stateroom on Majestic Princess.

There is no closet per se, but there is bar for hanging clothes located opposite the bathroom door and a cabinet with several shelves and drawers. You can ask for more hangers if you need them, but I always bring extra wire hangers with me.

READ NEXT:  What to Pack for an Alaska Cruise

The bathroom is a bit tight. But I love that there’s three rows of glass shelving, definitely enough space to put all my and my husband’s toiletries … and I bring a lot of toiletries with me when I cruise!

Inside the shower you’ll find dispensers with shampoo and body wash. The shower also has a small ledge, which is perfect for holding your own bottles of shampoo and conditioner.

Our cabin category, though standard in size and layout, was high enough that it came with individually-sized spa-branded shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion.

The balcony is maybe 40 square feet, which was big enough to fit four of us during the Glacier Bay scenic cruising. There are two chairs and a small glass table, but because it was cold and rainy for much of our cruise, we didn’t use the balcony too often.

Our Room Steward

As on all cruises, service varies by room steward. My guy both impressed me and let me down at various times.

He totally impressed me when he replaced the handful of tissues I’d taken from the bathroom to keep next to the bed with a full tissue box. I always keep tissues by my bed on a cruise and no one, not even on the ships where I’ve had a butler, has ever thought to do that.

He let me down because he had a tendency to forget to refill the ice bucket. No worries though, you can use the stateroom TV or the Medallion app to order an ice bucket.

Review of Dining Options on Majestic Princess

What would this Majestic Princess review be without mentioning the dining. But sadly, dining was the biggest disappointment for me. Though we did have a few good meals, overall, the food was mediocre to poor.

And it didn’t matter whether we ate in an included or extra-fee venue. In fact, some of the best food I had was in the buffet and the worst dish (a filet mignon) was in the $29 per person steakhouse, Crown Grill.

The ship has six complimentary dining venues (I’m counting all four main dining rooms as “one” option). There are three extra-fee restaurants including Harmony, the only Chinese restaurant in the Princess Cruises fleet. (Unfortunately, I was the only one of my four-person group who wanted to try Harmony, which meant I was solidly outvoted.)

Our two favorite spots during the day were Alfredo’s Pizzeria and Chopsticks Noodle Bar. The first is Princess’ signature – and free – pizza place and has some of the best pizza you’ll find at sea.

Majestic Princess Chopsticks Noodle Bar aerial view of bowls of soup.

INSIDER TIP:  If you want to have lunch at Alfredo’s get there before noon. The eatery opens at 11 or 11:30 a.m. most days and by noon, there’s usually a line. If you don’t want to wait, try getting there by 11:45 a.m. for your best chance at getting a table right away.

The second, Chopsticks Noodle Bar, is another Majestic Princess -only venue that’s a leftover from its day in Asia. Wonton noodle soup and a vegetarian miso ramen were always available, plus there was always a special of the day.

I had the vegetarian miso ramen several times, and the special (a lo mein) once. They were always super yummy, with just a little bit of a kick. (You could have them notch up the spiciness if you wanted.) Chopsticks is free. It’s located outside on the Lido Deck and was usually open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Majestic Princess Bistro Sur La Mer

International Café was our favorite spot for mid-morning or mid-afternoon snacks. The mini quiches and sandwiches are perfect when you just need a little nosh, as are the array of desserts!

We spent most dinners in one of the three main dining rooms, rotating ourselves through each a couple of times. How good the service was depended on our waiters, with the best service we experienced in Allegro (the aft choice). Food was mostly fine and there was always “North to Alaska” option. My favorite main dining meal was a “North to Alaska” rockfish dish on Italian night.

Majestic Princess Crown Grill Review

Of the three extra-fee restaurants, the only one we visited was Crown Grill. Other than the beet and goat cheese salad appetizer and the creamed spinach side, which were delicious, the rest of our food was a big letdown.

Let’s start with my entrée. As someone who doesn’t eat red meat or pork, I usually rely on the sides at a steakhouse.

But on our Alaska cruise, Crown Grill offered a “North to Alaska” menu that had several fish options. I selected the wild Alaskan halibut.

There was the option to order my fish grilled, pan-seared or baked, and with lemon butter or drawn butter that I forgot to request when I ordered and my server didn’t ask. As a result, the entrée was a dry, baked piece of halibut with no flavoring. Oh, and did I mention it was dry?

Speaking of dry. One of my friends ordered a filet mignon, medium. It came seriously charred on top and quite red inside. She was never offered any sauce or au jus. Eventually, she had to leave the table because the steak was so dry and charred it made her cough.

My husband ordered lamb and said only a small portion of his dish was cooked well. The rest was tough and overcooked.

Only my friend who wanted her filet mignon well-done was happy.

To top off a not-so-great meal, I was disappointed to find Princess has changed its super popular Norman Love chocolate sampler dessert. What was once a highlight of any visit to Crown Grill is now combo of mediocre desserts none of us wanted to finish.

Entertainment and Onboard Activities

With three sea days (half a day of scenic glacier cruising aside), there was plenty of time to fill up onboard Majestic Princess . As avid trivia players, we tried not to miss any trivia sessions. But we made it to only one theater show, which was a guest comedian. We skipped all the song-and-dance revue style shows.

Insider Tip: Got a hot game of bridge going in a lounge and don’t want to have to leave to get food? You’re in luck! Order food via the Ocean Medallion and it will be delivered to you almost anywhere on the ship…in your room, by the pool, or hanging out in a lounge. Choices are varied, with free and for-fee options.

We also went to a few of the game show-style events put on by the entertainment team. They were mostly amusing though it often felt like the entertainment team was in on a joke that left the audience out of it.

To be fair, as only the fourth sailing since the COVID-19 pause, many of the crew members were still enthusiastically catching up with friends and enjoying life at sea again. The result was that sometimes it felt like the passengers were an afterthought.

LOTUS SPA   I also spent more than my fair share of time in the spa. Unfortunately, Steiner, the operator of the spas on Princess cruise ships, no longer offers the 10/20/30 sail, where you get progressively better discounts if you book three services at once.

Plus, they’d raised their prices a bit. More unfortunately for my wallet, that didn’t stop me from booking three services! All three services (massage, facial and keratin hair treatment) were great, but the hard sell after the first two were pretty next level.

Daytime Activities

My husband and I also got in a session of laser shooting, but we had to do it late on a port day. The activity is offered sporadically throughout the cruise and had pretty much booked up by the end of day one.

It’s one person (or same-family/friend group) at a time so space is limited. Majestic Princess is just one of a handful of Princess ships that offer the activity.

Other daytime activities included art talks, retail events, wine tastings, sports (mini golf, basketball, ping pong, etc.) competitions and outdoor movies. And, of course, there’s always Bingo.

On Alaska cruises, you’ll also be able to attend one or two “North to Alaska” presentations from geologists, historians and/or scientists. These are great introductions to the ports and Alaskan history and nature for those who have never been to Alaska.

Insider Tip: Skagway stops on Princess ships always include a visit from a musher and a sled dog puppy. If you want to attend the “Life as a Musher” presentation, get there super early. Everyone wants to see the puppy!

Watch out for the so-called fitness seminars, which are really just high-pressure sales tactics for the spa and fitness staff. (For example: Complimentary Footprint Analysis).

An outdoor activity unique to Princess Cruises is “Games Under the Stars,” which despite its name is an afternoon event. Here cruisers use their Medallion apps to compete in video-style games against other cruisers with all the action visible on the big screen by the pool.

Majestic Princess relaxation area is this Hollywood Pool Club.

Evening Entertainment

At night, you have a choice of shows in the main theater, trivia or game shows in the Princess Live Lounge, or live music in the Piazza, Vista Lounge and Crown Grill Bar.

Those who like to gamble can while away their night hours – and their money – in the casino. Two interesting evening entertainment options that are each worth checking out once are the Princess Watercolor Fountain Fantasy and the Good Spirits at Sea bar show.

If you’ve ever seen the lit-up water fountain show at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, then you can picture what Princess’ Watercolor Fountain Fantasy looks like. The water fountains are set to themed music and programmed to “dance” as colored lighting adds to the effect. It’s worth seeing once, with the shows later in the evening or later in the cruise less crowded than the earlier ones.

Princess Watercolor Fantasy Show dancing waters

Good Spirits at Sea takes place at the Good Spirits bar and it’s always the same thing. A video about the featured specialty cocktails accompanied by the bartender making each one.

Majestic Princess Good Spirits bar with Apples Delight cocktail

If you’re a cocktail lover, it’s worth going once to learn about the drinks and giving one or more of them a try. (Our favorite was the Apples Delight.)

Who’s Onboard

Our Majestic Princess cruise had a fairly well-rounded assortment of cruisers onboard, which isn’t unusual for an Alaska sailing. Alaska, as a destination, attracts people of all demographics.

The one thing we noticed was a decided lack of was families and young children, which was most likely due to the COVID-19 protocols. There were some teenagers and kids that could have been in the 10 to 12-year-old range. I’m fairly certain there was no youth programming of any type during the sailing.

There also weren’t many young 20-somethings, which wasn’t surprising. Princess Cruises is a laid-back cruise line that focuses less on fun and more on relaxation. As a result, it doesn’t usually attract the young (under 35) crowd.

There were plenty of past Princess Cruises passengers onboard, but we saw plenty of blue medallions, which indicate first-timers.

Final Thoughts – Majestic Princess Review

Overall, I had a wonderful time on my Majestic Princess sailing. The ship has almost all of the Princess staples I love and you can never go wrong in Alaska!

The food was a disappointment and there were times it seemed like some of the crew had forgotten how to do their jobs during the long pause.

But overall, Majestic Princess is a perfect example of the “new” Princess Cruises. It might not be right for those who loved the older, smaller Princess ships, but for anyone who likes the Princess vibe on a larger ship, it’s just right.

Disclosure: I paid the full fare for my Majestic Princess cruise, but was hosted for a complimentary dinner at the Crown Grill restaurant, which normally costs $29 per person. All opinions are my own and reflect my cruise experience and observations.

Royal Princess Alaska Cabin Location Recommendations

By Slowingdog , January 3, 2022 in Princess Cruises

Cool Cruiser

I've read a bunch of posts but can't seem to find a clear answer. We are about to book the Royal for an Northbound (Vancouver-Wittier) Alaska cruise this summer. We are a multi generational family in need of 5 balcony cabins, preferably with some connecting cabins. Because of this and the late booking we are limited in what cabins are available.

I see some people say it does not matter which side of this ship you are on as the Captain will spin the ship when in Glacier Bay so everyone gets a view, but what about the rest of the time when you are cruising between ports? Is there an advantage to being on the land side of the ship? For example, heading north to be on the starboard side? What about high deck verse low? Normally we chose high for Caribbean cruises but is it better to be low for Alaska to better see marine life?

So basically:

Which side of the ship?

Better to be high or low?

 Starboard probably better for northbound.

We prefer mid decks with cabins above and below. Check out the deck plans on Princess.com.  Select the connecting cabin box to find cabins that connect inside. Almost all adjacent balcony cabins can connect on the balcony. Balconies are small, 9ftx4ft. Better views of Glacier Bay and other scenic spots are from the upper open decks.

As far as which side of the ship...I don't think it really makes much difference.  For some strange reason, I tend to ALWAYS book on the port side.  I've never really given it much thought...probably due to the way deck plans are usually presented with the bow of the ship at the top of the page and scanning "left to right".  Call me weird!  😄

On our first Alaska sailing, we stayed in our cabin and just admired the view from the balcony.  (Not that it matters...but this one was on the Celebrity Solstice.)  Second sailing was on the Majestic.  I did venture out to an upper deck after watching from the balcony for a while...but I feel that this was time wasted just getting to a nice viewpoint on deck...time better spent staying put on the balcony!

As mentioned...they will "spin" the ship so that all get a good view.  You won't be disappointed.

Ombud

If you get E421-E425 ask to have the balconies connected. Sold as obstructed but the obstruction is that they are over a restaurant so quiet at night

After a scrumptious lunch onboard, you might kick back during an afternoon's sail amidst glacial islands once completely covered by ice, now featuring blue-tinged ice cliffs towering over the sea… keeping a close watch for orcas, humpbacks, seals and seabirds. Or kick it up a notch in the fitness center, treat yourself to a soothing session in the Lotus Spa, or relax at The Sanctuary, just for adults . Dinnertime temps with a range of onboard fine dining options offering tantalizing cuisine… maybe the Crown Grill for steak, the Crab Shack for seafood, or Sabatini's for Italian. Later tonight, try your luck in the casino, dance the night away at Skywalkers Nightclub, or head to the theatre for one of four original Broadway-style productions created exclusively for Princess by Stephen Schwartz, the legendary composer of "Wicked," "Godspell" and "Pippin." And that's just one typical day's sail in Alaska with Tauck aboard Golden Princess! Read Less

Here’s the ‘ridiculous’ rule on cruise ships that travelers are blasting as a ‘rip-off’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

When it comes to drinking on board a cruise ship , there is a rule that has even the most dedicated cruisers scratching their heads, claiming it is a “rip-off.”

Drink packages are a common offering on cruises, allowing guests to pay upfront to have the cost of alcoholic drinks at bars and restaurants on board the ship covered.

But there is often a catch – and it can be a terribly frustrating one.

If one person wants to purchase the drinks package, everyone in the same stateroom has to, despite the packages being charged per person, per day and strictly not allowed to be shared.

Australian couple Christine and Dave Russell, who have been going on multiple cruises a year for the past decade, found out how pesky the rule was when Ms. Russell decided to stop drinking 12 months ago.

It meant on three Carnival cruises , Mr. Russell had to miss out on purchasing the drinks package because Ms. Russell would have been forced to pay $111 ($72 USD) a day.

“When you times that by two and only one person drinks, it’s a lot of money,” she told news.com.au.

“I’m not going to drink $100 a day in soft drink. I don’t generally drink soft drink anyway, I only ever drink water.”

Ms. Russell described the rule as “frustrating” and “annoying.”

The Carnival cruise ship Valor heads up the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Wednesday, April 8, 2020

Carnival’s policy is that its “Cheers!” drinks package, including up to 15 alcoholic drinks a day and other non-alcoholic beverages, must be purchased by each adult assigned to the same stateroom.

No sharing is permitted.

News.com.au reached out to a number of major cruise lines that sail in Australia with similar conditions – including Carnival Cruise Line, P & O Cruises, Cunard, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean – and not one could give a reason.

Carnival Australia, which is the parent company of seven cruise brands in Australia and New Zealand, including Carnival, P & O, Cunard and Princess, instead said it took its Responsible Service of Alcohol seriously and drink packages were optional.

“Our beverage packages are completely optional, and guests have the freedom to purchase beverages individually at competitive prices, allowing them to customise their cruise experience according to their personal preferences,” a Carnival Australia spokesperson said.

A sign is shown at the entrance to the headquarters of Carnival Cruise Lines in Doral, Florida

“Our beverage package conditions align with general industry standards which have been in place for many years, and mirror other hospitality industries when opting for a set menu or drinks package.

“Guests who are pregnant or don’t drink alcohol do not have to buy a beverages package, and we offer a wide selection of non-alcoholic beverages.”

Adam Glezer of  Consumer Champion , who advocates for Australian customers with issues in the travel industry, told news.com.au the rule was “unreasonable” and “a profit making exercise.”

While he believes drink packages on cruises are a brilliant idea, he said cruise companies should not be pressuring people to buy them if they don’t want to.

Mr. Glezer, who is a cruiser himself, said it was “disappointing but not surprising” the cruise companies had failed to give a reason for the rule.

“They haven’t given a reason because there’s no explanation that would paint them in a decent light,” he said.

“I’m fighting for this to be changed because a drinks package should be optional per individual.”

“If someone drinks, they should be able to purchase the drinks package without others in the cabin being obliged to purchase the same package.”

“I’ve met a number of people that have been quite annoyed by the situation.”

He believes a cruise company who decides to buck tradition and “get rid of the ridiculous rule will have an edge on their opposition.”

Virgin Voyages and Disney Cruise Line, which had their first seasons in Australia this summer, have both ditched traditional drink packages.

Virgin instead allows guests to pre-pay their “Bar Tab” and get bonus on-board credit for doing so.

It promotes its offering as being different to other cruise brands, with “no restrictive drink packages with unreasonable rules here”.

Disney’s deals include packages of bottled wine and a refillable beer mug offering, where guests receive a 21 oz glass mug and can refill it for the cost of a 16 oz beer at any bar on the ship that serves draft beer.

Royal Caribbean has a slightly different take on the traditional rule that the same drink package must be purchased by those staying together.

If a guest within the stateroom does not drink alcohol then a ‘Refreshment Package’ must be purchased, including soft drinks, coffees, tea, juices and non-alcoholic cocktails.

Travelers have shared mixed reactions to cruise drink packages online, with some warning it is not worth it and others explaining how they got their money’s worth.

The Carnival Magic is seen docked in Ocho Rios, Jamaica during day three of the ShipRocked cruise on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024

One Australian TikTok user, who goes by the handle “jasmintiexo,” created a detailed breakdown of every drink she ordered on a eight day Royal Caribbean cruise.

It showed she was able to get $US1151.50 (about $1760) worth of drinks for $US520 (about $795).

See how major cruise brands in Australia apply the rule on drink packages below.

Carnival Cruise Line

If purchasing the “Cheers!” alcoholic drinks package each adult assigned to the same stateroom must purchase it too, starting at $111($72 USD) per person, per day.

There is a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks a day.

If the drinks package is part of an offer you have received from Carnival, then it is applicable to the 1st and 2nd adults in the cabin only; if the 2nd passenger is not 18 years of age, then the “Bottomless Bubbles” package (soft drink and juice) will be assigned at $7.50 (about $5 USD) per day.

Carnival Cruise Line told news.com.au: “If one of the guests sailing together chooses not to purchase a package, they always have the option to enjoy beverages ala carte.”

Celebrity Cruises

Guests must purchase the same drink package for all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom. Packages may not be shared.

A non-alcoholic drink package will be added instead for teens 13 to 17 years old, pregnant guests, and recovering alcoholics or guests with a medical issue that does not allow them to consume alcohol.

Alcoholic drink packages start at $US89 ($136) per person, per day.

Each adult assigned to the same stateroom must purchase the same drinks option.

Sharing is not permitted.

On a five to 14 night cruise, the “Beers, Wines and Spirits” package starts at $US72 ($110) per person, per day.

P & O Cruises

If two or more guests aged over 18 years are sharing a cabin all guests must purchase the same drinks package.

There is a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks a day. Sharing drink packages is not allowed.

Alcoholic drink packages start at $99 ($65 USD) per person, per day.

Princess Cruises

The requirement for alcoholic drink packages to be purchased by more than one guest is not included in the updated terms and conditions.

However in its FAQ, Princess Cruises states third and fourth guests in the same stateroom are not required to purchase or be defaulted to the selected package of first and second guests in a stateroom, implying the first two guests must purchase the same package.

Alcoholic drinks are limited to 15 beverages a day and must not be shared.

The alcoholic drink packages start at $110 ($72 USD) per person, per day.

Royal Caribbean

If purchasing the “Deluxe Beverage Package” it is required that it is purchased by all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom.

Packages cannot be shared.

If a guest within the stateroom does not drink alcohol then a “Refreshment Package” must be purchased.

This includes soft drinks, coffees, tea, juices and non-alcoholic cocktails.

Prices can change depending on the sailing.

The alcoholic drinks package is said to cost between $US56 ($86) to $US105 ($161) per person, per day, and the “Refreshment Package” costs $US29 ($44) per person, per day (both excluding gratuity).

Things To Do

Travel | travel: alaska is ready for another record-breaking cruise season.

princess alaska cruise staterooms

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024.

Looking at the most-visited Alaskan port as a proxy for the ship-shape southeastern side of the state, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from early April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Danali-sized jump of 30% compared to the previous mark set in pre-pandemic 2019.

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which is scheduled to dock in rustic Skagway on April 8. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ) has nearly 100 more after that. Impressive, but two competing companies have staked out larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush; Holland America Line ( hollandamerica.com ) is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises, and at the top of the totem pole is Princess Cruises ( princess.com ), which is celebrating its 55th year in these waters with seven premium ships sharing 158 departures.

Not counting grand voyages with itineraries so rich that they make a visit to Alaska seem more like a pitstop, this cruise season will see more than 800 trips of mostly seven to 10 days starting or ending on this side of the Pacific. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparallel wilderness, wildlife and native culture. In other words, bucket list stuff.

“Alaska is one of those places that draws you in and sets the hook right away,” said Kristi Switzer, destination marketing manager for Travel Juneau ( traveljuneau.com ). “Visitors come for the otherworldly experience of being in the presence of glaciers and fjords, seeing whales and bears, and finding the balance of Alaska Native cultural heritage with the rustic sophistication found in the capital city and other places within this magnificent state.”

Sometimes just seeing a whale's tail is a win when on an Alaskan tour. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Although Switzer recommends visits lasting several days instead of several hours, the city’s destination evangelist hopes that a partial day in Juneau and each major Alaskan cruise port has over 1.5 million passengers wanting more.

“This magical corner of the world has so much to offer beyond being a checkmark on people’s bucket lists,” she said. “Make time to enjoy the fascinating culture, spectacular outdoor recreation, unique shopping, amazing restaurants and artist galleries that Juneau and all of Southeast Alaska have to offer.”

Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises’ ( celebritycruises.com ) popular Edge class will make her Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines.

Skagway, a popular cruise port, is the northernmost point in Alaska's Inside Passage. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Edge will be joined by a pair of fleet mates for the season, albeit Summit’s seven-day roundtrips are turnarounds out of Anchorage or Vancouver and Solstice’s weeklong jaunts are solely based in the British Columbian seaport. Celebrity, a premier-category cruise line, meaning it’s between the economical mainstream class and pricy luxury level, has 57 departures to Alaska scheduled this year.

The other new recruit is Silver Nova, the youngest Silversea Cruises ( silversea.com ) ship in the luxury fleet to ever service Alaska. Capped at 728 guests, Silver Nova was launched last year and has the goods to do justice to a dreamlike place that captures the imagination of wilderness lovers and history buffs.

“Silver Nova is the ideal ship for Alaska cruising,” said company spokesman Brad Ball. “Her innovative design, which prizes openness over symmetry and incorporates an unprecedented use of approximately 4,000 square meters of glass, immerses guests into the incredible scenery of Alaska from virtually all venues and suites, with far-reaching views at every turn.”

While in Skagway, let happy and hard-working sled dogs take you on a spin around Musher's Camp. (Photo by David Dickstein)

The ship’s reimagined pool deck, which overlooks the water on her starboard side, and all-new outdoor venues — the Dusk Bar and the Marquee — allows unique openness to view spectacular Alaskan glaciers and wildlife. Those who want to experience an older and smaller Evolution-class Silversea vessel can book the Silver Muse, which also will sail mostly seven- to 14-day trips between Anchorage and Vancouver.

Because nearly every Alaskan cruise includes the staples — Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Inside Passage, and Denali with a land add-on — some cruise lines like to shake things up with unique itineraries.

Holland America has a roundtrip that makes it easy to visit the 49th and 50th states without a long flight. A new “Glaciers & Volcanos: Alaska to Hawaii” cruise, part of the premium line’s Legendary Voyages collection of journeys from 25 to 59 days, departs on Aug. 31 from Seattle or Sept. 1 from Vancouver aboard the 1,916-passenger Westerdam. The near-four-week-long itinerary includes seldomly visited Kodiak and Dutch Harbor before heading down to the tropics to make four calls to three Hawaiian islands.

Seabourn ( seabourn.com ) strives to offer a more tasteful Alaskan cruise and not only because it’s an ultra-luxury cruise line. “Caviar on the Ice” is a savory and swanky soiree on every Alaskan voyage, and when the 450-passenger Odyssey is in Sitka, a town originally built by Russian traders in the early 1800s, Seabourn guests can enjoy a culinary adventure that includes a scenic drive to a taproom for a sampling of local brews and a few eateries to try Siberian-rooted pelmeni dumplings and a hot dog made with caribou that the locals call “reindeer dawgs.” Sorry, vegetarians and friends of Santa, but Blitzen on a bun is da bomb.

Red Onion Saloon, a former bordello built in 1898, is a top attraction in historic Skagway. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Carnival Cruise Line ( carnival.com ) is staying with a three-ship deployment in Alaska this season. Sharing the workload of 55 roundtrips generally lasting seven to 11 days are Carnival Spirit (2,610 passengers) and Carnival Luminosa (2,260) out of Seattle, and Carnival Miracle (2,667) from San Francisco. Another mainstream cruise line, Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ), has four ships making 85 runs to Alaska from Seattle, Vancouver and Anchorage: Ovation of the Seas, (4,905) and older sister Quantum of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (2,543) and Radiance of the Seas (2,466).

Disney Cruise Line ( disneycruise.com ) is sending its 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder out of Vancouver for 15 week-long roundtrips, one five-day spin leaving on July 24 and an extended nine-day voyage on July 15.

Other cruise lines showing passengers a whale of a time in Alaska include Crystal, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Viking.
