All cabins on the 48-passenger National Geographic Islander II have windows, and some even have private patios. The ship offers deck hammocks, Wi-Fi, and food made with ingredients sourced from farms in the Galápagos whenever possible. Itineraries range from seven to 12 days and include cultural experiences in addition to wildlife viewing and water sports.

Large Galápagos Ships

Galápagos National Park officials have set a maximum of 100 passengers per vessel, so these are some of the largest ships in the archipelago. Travelers may opt for a larger-capacity cruise ship for more space (such as bigger hallways and staircases for easier movement around the ship) and increased services like an onboard doctor. The downside of traveling on a large ship is the time it can take to complete transfers by zodiac from the boat to the islands. Also, some areas of the Galápagos may be off limits to larger ships.

Celebrity Flora

The 100-passenger Celebrity Flora features all of the design elements, amenities, and services of its sibling ships and then some. With pleasant temperatures all year long, the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands is whenever you’re ready to go. Several cruise lines sail to the Galapagos Islands all year long. While you can see wildlife all year, December is hatching season for the giant tortoises, and July is mating season for blue-footed boobies and short-eared owls. Sea turtles lay their eggs early in the year and fully formed marine iguanas typically hatch in April and May.

Best small ship Galapagos cruise 

Avalon Waterways may be better known for its European river cruises , but it also sails the Galapagos Islands. Avalon sails this region on two ships, the Treasure of the Galapagos and the Delfin III . The Delfin III , which also sails the Amazon in Peru, is its newest and most luxurious Galapagos cruise ship. The ship has just 22 suites, almost guaranteeing you’ll make new friends along the journey. The Treasure of the Galapagos is even smaller, carrying a maximum of 16 guests. How Much Does A Galápagos Cruise Cost?

This typically depends on cruise length, comfort level of your boat and choice of cabin category, although seasonal and single supplements may also apply. On average, short cruises of 5 days or less cost from $2,500 pp, and longer cruises of 8 days or longer from $5,000 pp based on double occupancy.

Prices typically exclude the cost of flights to the islands (around $500) and the National Park entrance fee (currently $100, soon to be $200 starting 1 Aug 2024). Most cruises are all-inclusive with the exception of alcoholic beverages and tips. To help reduce the cost, keep apprised of last minute Galapagos Islands cruise deals or consider a private Galapagos cruise charter which often prove more cost effective if traveling in a group.

Do I Need A Visa For The Galápagos Islands?

You do not need a visa for the Galapagos Islands per se, but you may require a visa for entry into Ecuador dependent upon your nationality. U.S. citizens do not need a visa to enter Ecuador for stays less than 90 days in any 12-month period, however your passport must be valid for at least six months at the date of entry and have one blank page for your entry stamp. There are, however, several entry requirements for the Galapagos (see below).

Are There Any Galápagos Entry Requirements?

To enter Galapagos, travelers must present the following documents at the airport in Quito or Guayaquil before their flight to the islands:

• Return air tickets between the mainland and Galapagos
• Private travel health insurance
• Transit Control Card, which is available at the airport for a cost of $20 (cash only)

Upon arrival at the airport in Galapagos, travelers must then present their Transit Control Card, and pay the requisite National Park entry fee before they are allowed to enter.

How Many Days Should You Spend In Galápagos?

We always recommend a minimum of 5 days to adequately experience the Galapagos Islands and strongly advise 8 days to truly appreciate their incredible endemic species and otherworldly landscapes. What Is The Food Like On A Galapagos Cruise?

The cruises offer a wide selection of international and Ecuadorian food , including a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, chicken, rice and pasta, as well as fish and seafood which, as you might imagine, is abundant and fresh. The most famous local dish is the ceviche, made with freshly-caught lobster, octopus, squid, or shrimp.

Are small children under age 2 allowed on Galapagos cruises?

Yes, but it depends on the ship. Each Galapagos cruise line has its own policies regarding young children, and many have minimum or recommended minimum ages. Our  Galapagos family cruises page offers more insight on recommended ages.

If I don’t snorkel on a Galapagos cruise, will I miss out?

Snorkeling is indeed an integral part of a Galapagos Islands cruise and is offered most days, along with Zodiac rides. If you are not able to snorkel, consider a ship that carries a glass-bottom boat. These specialized watercraft are a great way to see and learn about the underwater wildlife as guides are able to explain what is being seen under the boat (penguins swimming!). Ships with this added activity option will offer the best cruise to the Galapagos for anyone not able to get in the water.

What is the terrain like in the Galapagos Islands?

Terrain varies between sandy beaches, lava rocks and established paths that may be flat or hilly. Naturalist guides are very good at pacing excursions, so guests of all levels can enjoy the wildlife and have plenty of photographic opportunities. Dry landings are on solid surfaces, and wet landings require guests to step from a dinghy into water. But you may always opt out of an excursion or landing, perhaps taking a Zodiac ride with easy coastal wildlife viewing instead.

Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating!

I brought my 11-year-old son on this trip because he had a rough year with his parents splitting up, and he has always had an obsession with penguins. Everything more than met expectations - the boat was wonderful, the wildlife was abundant, the naturalists and crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we saw penguins swimming, calling, and even mating! My son has never learned to swim due to a severe fear of putting his face in the water, but he was so enamored of the islands that he was able to overcome his fear and learn to snorkel. Genovesa Island was a miracle of wildlife. Sea kayaking along the cliffs was wonderful, as we could see all the animals and the cliffs themselves were beautiful. Snorkeling with penguins, sea turtles, and sharks was amazing. 

Accommodations Review

La Pinta was the perfect size and very comfortable. We chose La Pinta because of the size of the ship (not too big or too small), the itinerary (north islands), planned activities for kids, and the availability of a glass-bottom boat. Not a big fan of Quito, but that was a necessary stop. The recommended hotel in the old town area was wonderful.

Meals Review

Lots of options, all of them excellent. Staff worked very hard to accommodate my picky son's whims and were extremely respectful of my choice to be vegetarian.

Crew & Guides Review

The naturalists aboard La Pinta could not have been more professional or knowledgeable. We appreciated Paul sitting with us at lunch and getting to know us personally, and Dennis's enthusiasm about Charles Darwin was contagious. We enjoyed having several guides with different perspectives, but they were all phenomenal.

There was not one thing that could have been done better on this trip. Chris at AdventureSmith spent A LOT of time with me picking just the right ship for the Galapagos trip, and the Islander completely exceeded my expectations. The entire trip was excellent; a lot of different activity options everyday - hiking, snorkeling, swimming, lectures, zodiac rides - something for everyone. Lindblad was one of the most expensive trips we could choose from to see the Galapagos and it was worth EVERY penny. The quality of the naturalists and staff could not have been better, and I think the quality of this trip comes down to the quality of those leaders. Also, the Islander was the perfect combination of comfort and casual.

Islander was an elegant ship extremely clean, comfortable, and perfectly decked out for all the expeditions we went one. Plenty of wet suits and equipment to borrow.

FABULOUS. Wide variety of food selection which was all delicious.

The trip leader (Lynn) and the naturalists were the BEST part of the trip. They knew so much about the region; we would not have had this great an experience with any other leaders.

Great communication from Chris at various intervals before the trip; all documents and info came in timely fashion, and leading up to the trip he called to make sure we didn't have any problems, questions etc. Great customer service. Chris was awesome about getting me comfortable with the choice of vessel and explaining in detail all aspects of the trip. Great outfit.

Go for longer trip (8 days or more) rather than a shorter trip, because each island really is different from each other. Splurge to go on Lindblad.

All the arrangements were effected without a hitch. Drivers and guides met us at the airports and hotels. They were never late - in fact, they often came early. The expedition on La Pinta was just right for us - the itinerary, boat size, and amenities were perfect. Lastly, the trip to Cuenca was interesting and we very much enjoyed the architecture, restaurants, scenery, and the nearby gem of a national park.

The trip was all about the Galapagos Islands, and they did not disappoint. Seeing how treating animals with respect results in a very peaceful coexistence was eye-opening. I came away with some amazing pictures and experiences, including swimming with playful sea lions and stepping around iguanas and tortoises. That said, Cuenca was wonderful. We may very likely go back there after I retire to spend the winter months at least one year. What a beautiful city!

Quito is a big city and not particularly attractive. Our tour guide was good, but that did not change the fact that it was not somewhere we would want to spend a lot of time. We were told not to go out at night (though one restaurant had a free car service and it was worth the trip), versus in Cuenca where we went to a great restaurant about fifteen minutes from our hotel and walked back along the city streets after dark with no concern. There are some areas to avoid, but generally it seems to be a very safe city that also boasts clean tap water (though a several day acclimation period is recommended).

The hotels in Quito and Cuenca were very nice - particularly the one in Cuenca, which like many hotels there is a converted home of some wealthy resident. The accommodations on La Pinta were roomier than I had expected, with a large bed, big window and a bathroom with excellent water pressure and plentiful hot water. The boat, with 41 tourists on board, was just the right size.

The meals we had on our own on the mainland were good, particularly the breakfasts in Quito. On the boat, we enjoyed the meals very much, though breakfast and lunch buffets were clearly the highlight and the sit-down dinners were less impressive. We also had salmon our first night on the boat that could have been fresher. However, the lunches more than made up for the minor glitches.

All of our guides/naturalists on La Pinta were good. They were very knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic. In Quito, we had a good guide, notwithstanding she had a limited palette of locations to work with. Our guide in Cuenca was excellent too. All guides and naturalists were very proficient in English, though when we were off the boat, we tried speaking Spanish as often as we could.

The arrangements were perfect. Not a glitch in the entire nearly two weeks. I was so pleased that drivers and guides were always there when they were supposed to be there and made us feel like we were in good hands.

Andrew was great. That's why I'm planning a trip to Peru through him. Information was provided in a very clear and relatively concise manner. We kept the trip instructions close at hand, particularly when on the mainland. The only thing I did on my own without instructions to prepare for the trip was to visit the Mayo Clinic's travel clinic, where they made sure certain vaccinations were up to date and prescribed Diamox for altitude sickness in case I had an issue, as well as something for stomach upset (which was really not an issue).

I am just very happy to have found AdventureSmith. The agency and agent, Andrew, were recommended by friends of ours who were on the same boat as we were some years ago. I am looking forward to working with Andrew and AdventureSmith again when my younger daughter and I travel to Machu Picchu. I have already mentioned AdventureSmith to several people.

Just that they should do their homework to get the most out of the trip, bring the proper clothes (we traveled very light but were just fine), and check in with a doctor to make sure you don't spend days dealing with altitude sickness or have some other issue (after visiting the doctor, we bought DEET mosquito repellent which was not necessary all that often, but we are glad we did). I took Diamox and my wife (who did not take any meds) had just one day on arrival in Quito when she had a splitting headache, but then we both hiked for a couple hours at nearly 13,000 feet and we were both fine. I will definitely make sure my daughter and I have Diamox before we land in Cusco.

I have always found that people who travel similarly are personable and like-minded. My fellow travelers on this trip were no exception. The National Geographic Endeavor II had wonderful accommodations! My cabin was roomy, comfortable, and the wonderful crew member, Olga, who took care of the cabin always did an amazing job.

The food was incredible! It was like visiting a 5-star quality restaurant at every meal! The food was not only delicious, but the presentation and plating were creative and beautiful. The wait staff was also top notch! They took the time to get to know us and even anticipated our "usual" needs.

The naturalist guides were fun, informative, knowledgeable, and they really took the time to get to know us, the travelers. The certified photo instructor was fun, informative, knowledgeable, and he really took the time to get to know us, the travelers. All of the naturalist guides were consummate professionals! And our expedition leader, Paula, was equally amazing. She was fun, informative, knowledgeable, and her daily presentations provided the perfect balance of important information, brevity and humor.

Transportation Review

I had already arranged my own flights to get to and from the destination. National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions arranged the in-country flights. Leslie made sure I was aware of all of the transportation arrangements, putting my mind at ease.

Leslie C. was great! She provided me with all of the important information I needed. She was also very timely in getting back to me with my myriad of questions. It was great to have a dedicated Adventure Specialist, Leslie, to whom I could turn with questions.

I had another trip planned for the summer of 2021, but it was canceled/postponed due to COVID-19. In the "travel bucket list" in my mind, the Galápagos Islands were my next destination, and they were open for travel this summer. I did a little quick research, and decided that I wanted to travel with National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions, and I found that AdventureSmith Explorations could book the trip for me.

The Galápagos Islands are a destination of a lifetime! Do not skip any excursions! Soak up every moment. You can rest when you get home, but you will probably regret missing any opportunity to explore the islands.

Our accommodations on board the Legend were very comfortable, the food was delicious, and the staff delightful. 

Dessert twice a day, and all of it delicious. There was a really nice variety of foods available. It seemed that at every meal there was something to suit most dietary requirements. I enjoyed tasting the different fruit juices available at breakfast.

Cesar, the main guide for our group, was fantastic. Dora was very enthusiastic. All of the guides were helpful.

I was very careful to pack little that was not on the packing list provided. There were a few things I wish that I had taken in addition to the clothing on the list. I would have taken something slightly more dressy than hiking clothes as many of the women on our cruise had nicer blouses and sundresses.

Make sure you check in advance to see what kind of weather to expect. When we visited at the end of March and the beginning of April it was quite warm, but I understand other times of year can definitely be cooler.

We think it would be helpful to manage the expectations of guests about what animals will be seen. The reading material suggested possibilities that weren't necessarily possible because of the season of year, or the mating habits of the wildlife. It would be helpful to come with a more realistic understanding of those circumstances. Fortunately, Andrew made the suggestion that we allow an extra day to travel to Quito because of the possibility of cancellation of flights. The Atlanta airport blackout made that advice a reality and we were grateful to have that cushion. The various groups--Metropolitan Touring and Klein tours could not have given us more of a sense of being well cared for. Connections were smooth and clear.

Coral I was perfect for us. The room was spacious. The beds were comfortable and we loved the wake up calls by Diego!! Size of gathering rooms was perfect.

The variety of fresh fruit was most welcome, as well as the plentiful offerings of fish. The desserts were varied and tasty. I particularly appreciated having my birthday celebrated with a special, delicious cake! We're from Seattle and we thought the coffee was superb! The staff was exceedingly friendly and attentive to needs.

Ernan: was very knowledgeable; however, his approachability was variable--at times aloof and at other times, very forthcoming. Norman: consistently shared his knowledge of the islands and of the flora and fauna. Lola: enthusiastic in announcements; our exposure to her was limited.

We enjoyed the sense of adventure and physical activities without excessive fuss. We felt exceptionally well taken care of.

Best Time to Cruise Galapagos

How to get to the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are located in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, 600 miles (1000km) off the coast of Ecuador in South America. International flights will usually arrive at Quito or Guayaquil international airports on the Ecuadorian mainland. Direct flights from US cities are available, as well as from some European cities. A domestic flight from Quito or Guayaquil is required to get to the Galapagos Islands. Where do Galapagos Cruises depart from?

When planning your Galapagos trip, there are a few things to consider. When should you book? How many days? What to take? etc. Below are some tips to help you to get the most out of your trip of a lifetime;

Plan ahead - To avoid disappointment, planning your Galapagos Small Ship cruise well ahead of time is best. Most Galapagos yachts sell out at least 6 months in advance, so try to book early. That being said, sometimes there are good deals due to cancellations. So, if you are planning a spur-of-the-moment Galapagos cruise, checking for some last-minute deals is a good idea. Arrive early - trying to arrive at least 1 to 2 days before your cruise departure date is recommended in case of flight delays. The last thing you want is to miss a few days of your long-awaited Galapagos cruise and have to join the tour later.

Choosing the right trip - As mentioned earlier, yachts are restricted from returning to the same visitor site within 14 days. For that reason, you will see many different itineraries, ranging from East, West, North, South, A, and B. Most boats have put a lot of effort into scheduling the itineraries, so no matter which one you pick, you will have a memorable experience. Galapagos itineraries can be as short as 4 days, but most are 8 days long. However, the best way to see the Galapagos and all it has to offer is to do 2 back-to-back, 7-night itineraries; his way, you will cover most of the islands and visitor sites. Cruises versus Island Hopping - While you can still explore some of the visitor sites and islands of the Galapagos by staying in a hotel and moving from island to island, only a few areas in the Galapagos National Park are accessible by day boat. Taking a liveaboard is the only real way to explore the 40 National Park landing sites, with the added benefit of arriving early before anyone else arrives.

What to pack - While on your Galapagos expedition, there are a few things you want to take with you to get the most enjoyment out of your Galapagos cruise. A good, comfortable pair of hiking or walking shoes is essential for the trails you will explore. The second set of waterproof type sandals is also ideal for beach walks and wet landings from the panga. Regarding clothing, you don’t need to worry about bringing too much. It’s recommended to bring a light raincoat or poncho, sunglasses, a hat, a lightweight sweater for cooler evenings, mosquito repellant, and some long, lightweight clothing for sun protection. Also, a good SPF is essential because the Galapagos Islands are close to the equator. For the evenings, the dress code varies from boat to boat, but at the most will be smart-casual.

Snorkeling Gear - most Galapagos yachts will provide a full set of snorkel gear, but it is recommended that if you have your own and it is comfortable, take it with you. Particularly if you have your mask or need a prescription mask, wetsuits are generally not included in the cost of the trip, and it can be a good idea to arrange to rent one of these to keep you warm in the water and to protect you from the sun.

Galapagos Travel Advice - You will need a valid passport to visit the Galapagos, with at least 6 months still available. Most countries do not require a visa to enter Ecuador, but checking with your local embassy before making travel arrangements is a good idea. The local currency is the US dollar, but most yachts accept major credit cards. If taking cash, try to bring smaller notes, as many restaurants and stores do not accept $100 bills. You should also bring US$ cash to tip the guides and crew aboard your Galapagos cruise.

We would highly recommend the Legend. We are prone to seasickness, so we took a large boat. I don't think we missed out on anything compared to the smaller boats except the ship had to anchor a little further out than the smaller boats and tender us in to shore.We also spent 5 days on land based activities in the Galapagos after the cruise. You will see much more wildlife cruising and visiting the uninhabited islands than you will visiting the human-populated islands.

Overall, cruising in Galapagos is truly an amazing experience. We have traveled and sailed in other parts of the world, but nothing can compare to experiencing wildlife as you are able to do on Galapagos Islands while learning from professional and experienced Naturalists, there to answer any question you may have about what you see or hear. Each Island has it's own unique experience to offer from geology, history, flora, fauna and sea life - fantastic!!

no diving but the snorkels rivalled most of the dives I've been on lately....

We did not dive, but enjoyed our snorkelling experiences. The wet suits kept us warm and they were very buoyant. We saw so much marine life, tropical fish, sea stars, sea lions frolicking, marine iguanas feasting, sea turtles in abundance, sharks, stingrays, penguins….a sea lion catching a parrot fish, amazing!

Did not dive, only snorkeling once or twice a day with great experiences. Separately, for some reason you didn't ask about Santa Cruz island, but I can say the time seeing giant tortoises at El Chata ranch was very special and I think s highlight of anyone's trip to the Galapagos.

We snorkeled rather than diving, and the experience was a bit mixed. We had some days with rough water and poor visibility, but other days that were perfect. We saw sea lions, turtles, penguins, and marine iguanas in addition to the usual cast of fish.

They were well organized with full wet suits, masks etc. We were given free reign with a good overview for safety. For me, the water was still to cold and tended to be murky and too few fish.Others took full advantage of the many opportunities and enjoyed finding the sharks, rays, etc. .

Snorkeling was great on all days! The best was the snorkel at Devils Crown where a huge pod of dolphins played around the catamaran and also escorted us during our snorkel event! We also saw some whales!!! GREAT EXPERIENCE!

The snorkeling was excellent but some spots had more of a « deep sea » feel, which was frightening and exciting at the same time. The crew makes us feel very secure at all times so you really enjoy your experience. Plenty of wildlife to see underwater : penguins, sea lions, rays, sharks, turtles and all the colorfull fish!

I came for the animals as well as the history. Our guide was great with the animal information but he missed on a few of the historical places (mentioned above). After iguanas on every island, you tend to ignore them after a while. Snorkeling was good but again, it was almost the same species at each snorkel site. Too much of any animal, fish, etc. can get old. We stopped on Isabella Island multiple times to the exclusion of other islands. Not sure if we missed anything on the other islands or not, just making a note. Overall, I really enjoyed the entire experience and will highly recommend it others. Thank you! (I am hoping I got my info right on these stops as they are not in the order we did them so my notes may be off a bit.)

We are world travelers- this trip has been the best we’ve ever taken. Be prepared! It is HOT and the islands treks are long and often rocky. The itinerary pace is extreme. There is very little down time. Everyday you are off the vessel by 8. Often by 6:30. Be prepared - while the ship is a luxury vessel - the activities can be taxing.

We loved all aspects of our cruise except one night of unavoidable rocky seas. We enjoyed 8 days (no regrets) but would have been satisfied with 5 days as things began to repeat.

The snorkeling was really good, clear waters, an abundance of sea life, the different locations with there unique qualities and creatures. Don't remember the excursions on each island. But overall it was one of the best adventures of our lives!

9 things I wish I had known before taking a Galapagos cruise

After a long pandemic of being landlocked in my suburban New Jersey home, my family and I were ready for an adventure.

We wanted an adventure that felt both COVID-19 safe and would be equally appealing to myself, my husband and my teenage son. The solution came in the form of a bucket-list idea that suddenly became attainable: a small ship cruise through the remote Galapagos Islands on Quasar Expeditions ' Evolution.

Many (OK, most) travelers book an adventure cruise to the Galapagos well in advance. Not us. Enticed by special fares and a desperate need to get away, I finalized our travel plans just three weeks before we sailed to Darwin's evolutionary proving ground. I was as enthusiastic about the wildlife I was about to encounter as I was about Ecuador's mandatory vaccination policies , both for arrivals in the country and then again to enter the protected Galapagos Islands . (Extra bonus: To board our 32-person Quasar ship, everyone also had to present a negative COVID-19 antigen test .)

The trip exceeded all expectations: The abundant wildlife was surreal, the scenery stupendous and the guiding some of the best I've ever experienced (and I've been on dozens of African safaris ). The small ship truly felt like home after a week, as we made friends with what turned out to be fewer than 20 fellow travelers ranging from 10 to 80 years of age. It was an amazing family vacation.

In hindsight, though, even the most memorable getaway could have gone more smoothly. With just a few weeks to shop and pack for the cruise , I focused on what I thought were the necessities — and sometimes I went astray.

If I ever get back to see the playful sea lions, the easy-going boobies and the technicolor marine life, here's what I would do differently now that I know the secrets to traveling in the Galapagos.

Prepare for the sun

Ecuador is on the equator. Yes, this sounds obvious, especially when I see it in black and white. I anticipated strong sun and made sure to load up on SPF 50+ sunscreen for my family, but we still felt the effects of the straight-on rays that are a hallmark of the destination nearly 365 days a year.

One afternoon, after peeling off the shortie wetsuit that Quasar issues each guest, I sat chatting in my bathing suit for about 10 minutes — and quickly turned the color of a Sally Lightfoot crab. Lesson learned.

Instead of simply bringing topical lotions, I'd recommend sun-shield clothing — including long-sleeved swim shirts — with built in SPF. For island explorations, a wide-brimmed hat (not just a baseball cap) should be mandatory.

While you're at it, take a fashion note from the guides — who are usually covered head to toe in sun-protective gear — and throw in a neck gaiter, too, so the back of your neck doesn't take on a ruby-red hue.

Waterproof everything

A lot of what makes a Galapagos cruise fascinating is the time spent exploring on the water, in the water and on islands close to water. Bring all the waterproof cases and pouches you might want to keep your belongings safe and dry.

I invested in a top-notch underwater camera and would recommend the same to anyone taking a trip like this. My photos of twirling sea lions, swimming sea tortoises and neon fish are my favorite trip souvenirs.

However, I left my waterproof phone case at home, thinking I'd only use the camera. Big mistake. The small ships in the Galapagos rely on pangas, or inflatable dinghies, to speed passengers from boat to beach. We also paddled kayaks — often alongside playful sea lions. I didn't need an underwater camera for these on-the-water rides, but I was afraid to pull out my phone to grab quick pictures for fear of it might get wet. Because I didn't have a waterproof case, I missed a lot of the action.

Another thing I'd pack next time: A waterproof stash bag to keep both my phone and my clothes dry on the bumpy pangas and on the beach.

Pack a guide to birds, plants and wildlife

The Galapagos authorities require that every visitor to the islands be in a professionally guided group of no more than 16 people and on a boat that doesn't exceed 100 people. (Evolution assigns about 12 people to each guide). Our Quasar guides were fascinating career naturalists who had each been guiding in the Galapagos for more than 25 years.

However, there are a LOT of birds in the Galapagos, and a guide wasn't always available to point out each one. I'm talking 13 types of finches, each with a special niche, plus hundreds of other species of rare fauna and flora. At the end of the day, I often couldn't keep my finches straight.

While there's a library on board, I found myself jealous of the younger kids who brought along checklist books and simple guides to keep track of wildlife. Next time, I'll stock up on basic bird and animal guidebooks and bring a journal to keep notes and lists.

Invest in binoculars for everyone in the family

One of the truly unique aspects of touring the Galapagos Islands is how unfazed the birds and other wildlife are when humans approach. You can walk right up to a nesting Nazca booby and it will simply tilt its head and look at you. Wander up to sunning sea lions and they'll act like you're not there.

But not all of the action happens up close. Some birds are more majestic soaring in the air. You might need to watch a whale crest a wave or a penguin perch on a glistening rock from afar. In these instances, it helps to have binoculars.

Although you can borrow a pair for a bit, you'll want your own to take in all the scenery. We had one pair for the three of us, and I wished we had two more, so we never had to share or miss out on far-away wildlife sighting.

Bring more U.S. currency than you think you'll need

Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as currency, so I didn't need to exchange money before or during my trip. Therefore, I mistakenly thought my travel finances would be smooth sailing.

Not so. ATMs are scarce in the capital city of Quito where I started my trip and almost nonexistent on the islands. Yet cash is king at small, family-owned businesses and when it comes to tipping. I had counted on withdrawing more dollars from ATMs as needed, but found myself rationing my bills instead. Next time, I'll stash more cash in my wallet before I leave the U.S.

Prepare for seasickness

In my years as a travel writer, I've sailed on all sorts of ships — a tall-masted sailboat around the Greek Islands, an expedition ship in the Arctic Ocean, cruise ships big and small — and never been seasick. I even got married on a yacht on the Hudson River. I have never experienced the wave of nausea I experienced mid-way through my Galapagos cruise.

I've been on rough seas, but my trusty acupressure point bracelets always got me through, as they were evidently doing for the first part of this adventure. Then I stopped wearing them because I was spending so much time snorkeling that it seemed like too much "work" to keep taking them off and putting them back on.

Don't make the same mistake. The animals on the islands may be peaceful, but the Pacific Ocean can be rough, especially when the ship is covering long distances. Keep seasickness medications close at hand and acupressure bracelets on any time the ship is moving.

Power up for a cruise

Ecuador uses the same electrical current as the U.S. — 110 volts — so I left my converter at home. I forgot that my travel converter has several lightning cord slots, so it doubles as a plug extender, allowing me to power up all my devices at once when I'm on the road.

With only one plug in the room, and two people sharing the space, we were constantly shuffling our electronics. Next time, I would bring a small multiplug power strip (a good hack for any cruise -- just make sure it's one without a surge protector).

One thing I learned to love during my time on Evolution was the ability to unplug completely. No Wi-Fi, no cell service— a truly disconnected vacation. Every mealtime was marked by a lovely exchange of conversation without the distraction of pinging phones.

However, I didn't plan ahead for evening downtime. For the future, I'd load up my iPad with entertainment options ahead of time, which would have been helpful for the plane ride home, too.

Take baby steps back to reality

The most important thing I would change if I could do it all again? Not head right back home after our bucket-list cruise.

We gently eased into Ecuador at the beginning of our weeklong cruise, spending two nights nestled in the heart of historic Quito, exploring the architecture and enjoying a stay at the iconic Casa Gangotena. But the last day of the cruise, we flew back to Quito at night and stayed at a hotel in a far corner of the city. It was too late to do anything but eat in our room, and then we headed back to the airport in the dark early morning hours.

In retrospect, we should have spent an additional day easing back into reality and exploring the surrounding cloud forest — which would have been a much more relaxing and special way to end our adventure. Of course, it's a good excuse to plan a return visit to Ecuador, and hopefully the Galapagos Islands, in the future.

Adventure Time: Things You Need To Know Before Taking An Expedition Cruise

“Leave your suitcase on the dock, grab a life jacket, and jump on the boat.”

Instead of using a walkway to get to our ship, we had to take a short boat ride, so I dutifully snapped the clasps of the bright red life jacket, found a spot on the edge of an inflatable zodiac boat (holding on to the rope behind me for dear life), and wondered what I had gotten myself into.

But by the end of the week, I was grateful that I had signed up for the expedition cruise. Though I had researched what to expect on the trip, experience is truly the best teacher. As the week unfolded, I learned a lot about this form of exploration and the type of people who take such cruises. Below are the most important takeaways.

Expedition ships are much smaller than traditional cruise ships

One of the first things to know before signing up for an expedition cruise is the ship size will pale in comparison to what you’re used to. While ships will vary in size, the MS Santa Cruz II holds up to 90 passengers, and our sailing had a little more than 60 passengers. I stayed in an explorer cabin, which had a comfortable double-size bed, wide window, and crisp navy and white nautical-inspired decor.

Since the ship is smaller, you can feel more movement, and we did experience some intense swaying one night, which made me nauseous. The crew provided me with anti-nausea medication, and I spent a few hours on the observation deck getting fresh air. Sea sickness is more common on a smaller ship, and if it’s your first time on a smaller cruise ship, it may take some time to get your “sea legs.”

And though the ship was small, the food was a big highlight. Hurtigruten Expeditions is a top-of-the-line cruise company, and the food they provided did not disappoint. Breakfast was a buffet of traditional dishes like bacon, eggs, pastries, waffles, and fresh fruit, and lunch and dinner were made-to-order three-course meals and included ceviche, roasted chicken, and prime rib. Alcoholic drinks were complimentary during mealtimes and there also was a bar for ordering drinks at night.

Your packing list is going to look a little different

The dress code on an expedition cruise is very casual. For most of the cruise, we wore our expedition gear (for me that meant leggings or shorts and a T-shirt). For a warm-weather voyage, it’s important to bring clothes that are going to get wet and possibly dirty and lots of sun protection because you’ll spend 90 percent of your day outdoors.

Be sure to pack a sunhat, water shoes, swimsuits, or a rash guard. I purchased a long-sleeve swimsuit at the airport in Quito, which turned out to be one of my best travel purchases. It’s also important to bring a backpack to store a change of clothes. In order to get to our expeditions, we had to disembark on the zodiac boat (sometimes two or three times a day) and we spent most of our time hiking, snorkeling, or swimming.

Off-ship activities are the focus

Expedition cruises are all about, well, you guessed it, expeditions. I had come with the sole purpose of seeing the Galápagos Islands, which are made up of 13 main islands and several small islands and islets. People flock here for the biodiversity and remoteness of the islands; most are uninhabited, and when we landed on an island, we were the only ones there. 

Each day, there was a full itinerary waiting for us, and I explored several islands during the cruise. The first was Isabela, the largest of the Galápagos Islands. The volcanic island was covered in lush vegetation and it looked like something from a Jurassic Park movie. We sailed around the perimeter of the island, and I saw penguins, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies. Later that afternoon, I went for a glass-bottom boat ride where giant stingrays and sea turtles greeted us.

On Fernandina Island, we hiked the rocky terrain, dodged cacti, and took photos of sea otters just inches from us. My favorite stop was Santa Cruz, the most populated island, which is home to Galápagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Research Center. After visiting both centers, we headed to a tortoise farm, where we had close encounters with giant 100-year-old tortoises. Our last stop was Floreana Island, home to pink flamingos and white sand beaches. 

An open mind and sense of adventure are necessary

Though you could carve out time to relax, an expedition cruise isn’t necessarily for travelers who want to lie by a pool with a cocktail in hand or who need non-stop entertainment. On our cruise, nightly activities included our tour guides hosting educational lectures, and our schedule was packed with activities (some that started as early as 7:30 a.m.).

An expedition cruise is great for those who have already done a bit of traveling and want to go deeper into exploring a location. My cruise was made up of a mix of families, retirees, and professionals in search of adventure. Though it wasn’t a typical cruise experience, this trip ended up making a significant impression on me. The wilderness of the Galápagos Islands coupled with up-close encounters with the wildlife is something I’ll never forget.

Galápagos Conservancy

The 2024 Galápagos Pinnipeds Research and Monitoring Expedition

At Galápagos Conservancy , the imperative to conserve the species and ecosystems of Galápagos for the long term drives our support of projects that generate critical scientific knowledge to help managers make informed decisions. As part of this enduring commitment to conservation efforts, we are supporting ongoing research on the pinnipeds of Galápagos – its sea lions and fur seals. Researchers Drs. Diego Páez and Marjorie Riofrío of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito are assessing these species’ population status throughout the archipelago as well as the status of their marine ecosystem’s health in the face of climate change. This research is funded through our conservation grants program.

Annual Pinniped Research and Monitoring Expeditions

An annual scientific research and monitoring cruise is the main component of the pinniped’s investigation. It is organized by the Galápagos National Park Directorate , the Universidad San Francisco de Quito , and the Agency for Regulation and Control of Biosecurity and Quarantine for Galápagos . This year’s expedition took place over two weeks in March and April, supported by the Galápagos Conservancy and the Charles Darwin Foundation .

Technicians and scientists embarked on the ship Sierra Negra , a vessel owned by the Galápagos National Park Directorate. During this expedition, Dr. Riofrío visited 14 islands in the archipelago and estimated pinniped populations at 30 different sites.

The team surveyed populations of sea lions and fur seals in their reproductive colonies to understand their current status and evaluate population trends and growth rates. At each site, animals were captured to collect biological samples such as blood, hair, whiskers, skin, and nasal and rectal swabs. These samples were analyzed to assess the species’ health status and investigate potential changes in their diet related to environmental variability.

Riofrío indicated that fewer animals were recorded this year, perhaps due to the expedition’s timing, which occurred during the warm season rather than the reproductive peak of these species. Additionally, she raised the possibility that El Niño events may negatively impact these populations. “This emphasizes the importance of closely monitoring Galápagos pinniped populations and understanding the climatic factors affecting their survival,” she noted.

Ecological Importance of Pinnipeds in Galápagos

In the Galápagos archipelago, sea lions and fur seals serve as important sentinels of the sea. Their presence and behavior provide invaluable insights into the health and vitality of the ocean surrounding these unique islands. These top predators that consume many fish and other marine organisms may help maintain the food chain’s functionality. Furthermore, their interactions with the marine environment can reveal environmental changes and alert us to potential threats to marine biodiversity. Therefore, protecting sea lions is not only crucial for their survival but also for the overall health of the marine ecosystem in the Galapagos.
