The Ultimate Guide to Kayaking at the La Jolla Caves

Sponsored post.

If you’re planning your next trip to San Diego, La Jolla is most likely on your to-do list. With glorious coves and stunning views, it’s a must-see destination when in Southern California.

One of the most popular activities in La Jolla is kayaking. There are countless tours that offer some of the best kayaking and wildlife sightings you could ask for. It’s a magical experience that will keep you coming back every time you’re in San Diego.

What are the La Jolla caves?

La Jolla’s coastline is one of the most pristine ocean environments you can find. Ninety percent of the La Jolla coast is protected as an Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve by the United States government . This means that fishing and scavenging is strictly prohibited.

As a result, La Jolla waters are clear enough to see reefs, kelp beds, canyons, and wild fish. As long as the weather is nice (which you know if you’ve ever been to Southern California, the weather is usually gorgeous) there will be lots to see. You also have a chance to catch a glimpse of some playful sea lions–definitely reason enough to consider taking a kayaking trip through the area.

When it comes to kayaking, La Jolla caves are the hot spot. There are seven caves in La Jolla:

  • Little Sister
  • Shopping Cart
  • Sea Surprize
  • Clam’s Cave
  • Sunny Jim Cave

The reason kayaks have become so popular in La Jolla is not only because it’s an enjoyable way to spend time on the water, but it’s actually the only way to reach most of these caves. Sunny Jim Cave is the only cave you can get to on foot.

Additionally, Clam Cave is the only cave you’re allowed to actually go into. But you can still see into the other La Jolla caves, getting close enough to experience their natural beauty. Regardless, simply meandering through the La Jolla coves is just as magical an experience.

Which tours are available for kayaking in La Jolla?

A simple Google search will show you all your options for kayaking in La Jolla. But here are some of our favorite tours that you should check out for your kayak adventure.

La Jolla Kayak is a tour service that takes guests through La Jolla Cove. As you glide through the water, a tour guide will share facts and history about the area while pointing out some of the incredible animals you might see like sea lions, leopard sharks, and sometimes even dolphins.

The tour with La Jolla Kayak lasts two hours and is perfect for anyone over the age of 6. Tours depart frequently throughout the day (weather permitting) from 9 am to 4 pm. Single kayaks start at $44 and double kayaks start at $69.

Everyday California is another great kayak tour service in the La Jolla area. They offer both cave tours and kayak/snorkel tours. So, depending on how wet you want to get, Everyday California has a tour for you.

In the winter months from December 1st to March 1st, Everyday California also offers whale watching kayak tours in La Jolla, meaning you have year-round access to this beautiful part of San Diego. Who would’ve thought you’d be able to see magnificent grey whales in the wild outside of Alaska?!

Tours run by Everyday California range from 90 minutes to two hours and are available to anyone over the age of five. Of course, all kayak tours require kids to have a chaperone.

Although you’ll find many companies offering kayak rentals along La Jolla’s coastline, it’s always best to go on a kayak tour. Their guides know all the hot spots and you won’t get lost. Plus, learning from an expert all about the area is the cherry on top of the experience.

What do you wear kayaking in San Diego?

If you’re a California-native, especially if you grew up in one of the southern cities, you probably have a collection of wetsuits. But, if you’re not from the coast, chances are, you’ve never shimmied your way into such a tight, form-fitting piece of “clothing.”

Wetsuits are the best and most appropriate thing to wear while kayaking through the La Jolla coves. If you have your own, bring it along. But if you don’t, the best thing to wear is a bathing suit.

When you book a kayaking tour, you’ll be able to rent a wetsuit –most of the time it’s a requirement–and you’ll be a lot more comfortable this way. The Pacific Ocean is noticeably colder than the Atlantic most the year. So, even if you’re a Floridian who assumes you’ll be fine in a bikini, think again. Wetsuits will keep you warm and better able to enjoy your La Jolla kayaking adventure.

What To Do with My Stuff While Kayaking at La Jolla

Finally – and this may be obvious – you won’t want to bring your luggage with you on a kayak tour of the La Jolla coves. Plan to stash your bags at a San Diego luggage storage spot .

You shouldn’t skip the opportunity to see the La Jolla caves just for lack of a place to leave your gear. If you’re not checked into a hotel nearby or don’t want to leave your things in a hot car, line up secure storage before you kick off your kayak tour. This is a great option for those who are planning to fly out of San Diego that day but want to make sure that their stuff is secure at the airport before their flight.

Once your stuff is squared away and you’ve shimmied into your wetsuit, grab your paddle and get ready for an unforgettable day. There’s no better way to see the beautiful coast near San Diego and to get away from the city for a while!

can you kayak la jolla caves without a tour

Introduction

The La Jolla Caves in San Diego, California are one of the most popular kayaking destinations in the area. With its stunning views, diverse wildlife, and unique geological features, it’s no wonder why so many people flock to the caves each year. But what if you want to explore the caves without a tour? Can you kayak the La Jolla Caves without a tour? The answer is yes – with the right equipment, preparation, and safety precautions, you can have an incredible experience exploring the caves on your own.

Interview with Local Kayaker

To get an insider’s perspective on kayaking the La Jolla Caves without a tour, we spoke with Jason, a local kayaker who has been paddling the caves for over 10 years. When asked about his experience kayaking the caves without a tour, he said: “I’ve done it a few times and it was definitely an adventure. There were some challenges along the way but overall it was an amazing experience. I got to see some things that I wouldn’t have seen on a guided tour, like the hidden tunnels and secret coves.”

Jason also shared his biggest challenge when kayaking the caves without a tour: “Navigating the caves can be tricky. There are a lot of twists and turns and it’s easy to get lost or turn into a dead end. You really need to know where you’re going and how to read the tides and currents.” Despite the challenges, Jason said that kayaking the La Jolla Caves without a tour is an incredibly rewarding experience.

Step-by-Step Guide to Kayaking the La Jolla Caves Without a Tour

If you’re looking to explore the La Jolla Caves without a tour, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare for your adventure:

Where to Find the Cave Entrances

The first step is finding the cave entrances. There are several entrances to the caves, located along the coast of La Jolla. The easiest way to find them is to use a map of the area, which can be found online or at local businesses. Once you’ve located the entrances, you’ll be ready to start your journey.

What Gear Is Needed

Before you head out, make sure you have all the necessary gear. This includes a kayak (or other watercraft), life vests, paddles, a flashlight, and any other items you may need for your journey. Be sure to check the weather conditions before you go and dress appropriately.

How to Navigate the Caves Safely

Once you’ve arrived at the cave entrances, it’s time to start exploring. Before you enter, familiarize yourself with the layout of the caves. Look for markers that indicate the entrances and exits as well as any potential hazards. It’s also important to pay attention to the ocean tides and currents, as these can affect your ability to navigate the caves safely.

When kayaking the caves, move slowly and cautiously. Pay attention to your surroundings and watch out for any obstacles or wildlife. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a break and regroup before continuing. Most importantly, never venture too far into the caves without a partner.

Safety Tips for Kayaking the La Jolla Caves Without a Tour

Kayaking the La Jolla Caves without a tour requires extra safety precautions. Here are some tips to keep in mind while exploring the caves:

Weather Conditions

Pay attention to the weather forecast and avoid kayaking in inclement weather. Strong winds and waves can make navigating the caves difficult and dangerous. Make sure to check the forecast in advance and be prepared for any changes in weather.

Ocean Tides

Be aware of the ocean tides and plan your route accordingly. Low tide is usually the best time to kayak the caves, as there will be less water and fewer strong currents. However, you should still be aware of the tides and be prepared to adjust your route if necessary.

Keep an eye out for wildlife while kayaking the caves. Seals, sea lions, and other animals inhabit the area and you should give them plenty of space. If you encounter a wild animal, paddle away slowly and never approach them.

Plus, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you navigated the caves on your own. However, it’s important to remember that you’ll need to be extra cautious and practice safe kayaking techniques.

Kayaking in La Jolla: Everything You Need to Know

can you kayak la jolla caves without a tour

La Jolla Kayaking

If you love the ocean and revel in exploring it, kayaking in La Jolla will be a magical experience for you. This activity is incredibly popular and is definitely one of the top things to do in La Jolla when you’re visiting. The local tour companies are experts, and know exactly where to take you and how to get you there so you get the most out of your experience. There are all kinds of things to explore; from venturing inside Clam Cave to the chance to see some wildlife, there is nothing quite like kayaking in La Jolla!

Whether it’s your first time out on the water or your fiftieth, here are some ways to get the most out of your kayaking adventure.

can you kayak la jolla caves without a tour

The La Jolla Underwater Park

This vast area of sea goes all along the La Jolla Coast and includes the ocean bottom and canyons that extend from it. 90% of this is protected as an Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve, meaning there is no fishing or scavenging of any kind and all wildlife and plant life is being preserved. This is part of their mission to protect the local, aquatic wildlife. In total, the park encompass approximately 6,000 acres. It’s particularly interesting because of its wide variety of landscapes; deep submarine canyons, rocky reef shallows, kelp bed, sand flats are all visible to snorkelers and on clear days, kayakers!

At times, the water will be crystal clear and provide you incredible views below the water’s surface; this is your chance to see all kinds of fish (especially the state fish, Garibaldi), leopard sharks, shovelnose guitarfish, and more.

Learn more about which areas you want to explore by kayak below:

The Seven La Jolla Caves

The timeworn cliffs of this coast have, over their 75 million years, had caves carved into the sandstone. Weather permitting, coast into these caves for a breathtaking experience. These  seven caves  are, from east to west:

  • Little Sister
  • Shopping Cart
  • Sea Surprize
  • Clam’s Cave
  • Sunny Jim Cave

All of the caves can only be explored by kayak, except for Sunny Jim, which you can hike down into. There is a small tunnel leading down from the Cave Store that you can go through by foot. During the 1920s Prohibition, it is said that illegal smugglings happened through here! Clam Cave is the only cave you can actually kayak  into,  but you can pass by the other caves quite closely and really see their beauty up close.

7 Things You May Not Know about the La Jolla Caves

The Ecological Reserve

Tours run by companies like La Jolla Kayak often leave from this area, which can be accessed from La Jolla Shores. You can see buoys near the shoreside of Scripps Park, at the northeast point of La Jolla Shores and more again out into the canyons. Try to make out the invisible path between each of the buoys, and you have the perimeter of the reserve.

What plants and creatures can you look forward to seeing? There are often leopard sharks, dolphins, whales and, of course, sea lions hanging out here. Spot them swimming amongst the kelp and the reefs of the ocean arena.

The Marine Life Refuge

Head north of the reserve, and you’ll find yourself in the Marine Life Refuge. This space was set up in 1929 by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography for research purposes. Though academic work is conducted here, you are also allowed to fish and play in its perimeters.

As with the Ecological Reserve, get ready to coast on the water and look down to sites of leopard sharks, garibaldi, sea lions and, depending on the day, dolphins!

Kayak Tours & Rentals

To learn the area and valuable kayaking techniques, there are certified guides ready to take you on your La Jolla kayaking adventure. We recommend booking as far in advance as possible, especially during the summer months. There are several companies that provide kayaking tours, and some are even combo tours (bike and kayak, snorkel and kayak, etc.). Some of our favorites are La Jolla Kayak, Everyday California, and Bike & Kayak Tours of La Jolla.

If you’ve already kayaked before, you may only the equipment and not a full tour. These companies, and local shops, also rent out kayaks and other equipment. For more information, check out our complete  La Jolla Shores guide !

What are the La Jolla Sea Caves?

The La Jolla Sea Caves are a series of seven natural caves sculpted by the powerful forces of the Pacific Ocean along the coast of La Jolla, a picturesque neighborhood in San Diego, California. These caves, also known as the Seven Sea Caves, are a popular destination for kayaking enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The caves are located within the La Jolla Ecological Reserve, which spans approximately 6,000 acres of protected marine habitat. This area is home to a diverse array of marine life, including sea lions, seals, dolphins, and various species of fish and birds. The unique geological formations of the sea caves provide a sanctuary for these creatures and create an enchanting environment for visitors.

Each cave has its own distinct shape and characteristics, offering a different experience for kayakers. Some of the most well-known caves include the Sunny Jim Cave, Arch Cave, and White Lady Cave. The Sunny Jim Cave, named after a popular cereal mascot, is the only cave accessible by land, while the others can only be explored by sea.

The Seven Sea Caves have been formed through years of erosion caused by the relentless pounding of waves against the sandstone cliffs. The constant forces of the ocean have sculpted beautiful arches, tunnels, and chambers, creating a mesmerizing underground world that is just waiting to be discovered.

One of the most famous features of the La Jolla Sea Caves is the Thunder Cave, aptly named due to the thunderous sounds produced when waves crash into the cavern. As you paddle through the serene waters, you might be fortunate enough to witness this natural wonder.

As you float through these remarkable formations, you will be captivated by the sheer beauty and awe-inspiring power of nature. So, grab a paddle and get ready to embark on an extraordinary journey through the magnificent La Jolla Sea Caves.

The History of the La Jolla Sea Caves

The history of the La Jolla Sea Caves dates back millions of years, when the rugged cliffs along the California coastline began to take shape. These awe-inspiring natural formations are a testament to the power of geological forces and the passage of time.

The caves themselves were formed through the process of erosion, as the relentless waves of the Pacific Ocean gradually wore away the softer sandstone cliffs. This process, which continues to this day, created the intricate network of caves that we see today.

La Jolla, which means “The Jewel” in Spanish, was named by early explorers who were captivated by the beauty of the area. The native Kumeyaay people have inhabited the region for thousands of years, and they have a deep spiritual connection to the land and sea.

In more recent history, the caves gained popularity during the early 20th century as a tourist attraction. The opening of the railway in 1910 made La Jolla more accessible to visitors, and people flocked to the area to witness the natural wonders of the sea caves.

One of the most well-known caves, Sunny Jim Cave, holds a unique place in history. It was discovered in 1902 by Gustav Schulz, a German engineer who was convinced that the cave could be used as a way to transport goods from the coast. Although his plan never materialized, the cave was eventually commercialized as a tourist attraction and is now accessible by land.

Over the years, the La Jolla Sea Caves have become an iconic symbol of the area, attracting visitors from all over the world. The caves have been featured in numerous films, photographs, and artworks, capturing their timeless beauty and intrigue.

Today, the La Jolla Sea Caves are not only a beloved tourist destination but also a protected ecological reserve. In 1970, the State of California designated the area as the La Jolla Underwater Park, ensuring the preservation of its unique marine habitats.

As you paddle through the La Jolla Sea Caves, you are not only experiencing a natural wonder but also connecting with a rich history that spans millions of years. It’s a testament to the resilience of nature and the enduring allure of this truly remarkable place.

Planning Your Kayaking Adventure

Embarking on a kayaking adventure in the La Jolla Sea Caves requires careful planning to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some essential steps to consider when planning your kayaking adventure:

1. Choose the Right Time

Timing is crucial when it comes to kayaking the La Jolla Sea Caves. It’s best to visit during the summer months when the weather is generally more favorable and the sea conditions are calmer. Be sure to check the local weather and ocean forecasts before heading out to ensure ideal kayaking conditions.

2. Book a Guided Tour or Rent Your Own Kayak

Decide whether you want to explore the sea caves on your own or opt for a guided tour. Going with a guided tour can provide you with expert knowledge, safety instructions, and the necessary equipment. If you choose to rent your own kayak, make sure you have prior kayaking experience and are confident in your abilities.

3. Familiarize Yourself with the Rules and Regulations

Before setting off on your kayaking adventure, familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve. These guidelines are in place to protect the delicate marine ecosystem and ensure a positive experience for all visitors. Respect the designated boundaries and wildlife, and be mindful of any protected areas.

4. Consider Your Fitness and Skill Level

Kayaking in the sea caves requires a certain level of fitness and skill. Consider your own physical abilities and experience to determine if this activity is suitable for you. If you are a beginner, it may be wise to start with a guided tour or take kayaking lessons before venturing into the sea caves on your own.

5. Pack Essential Gear

Ensure that you have the necessary gear for a safe and comfortable kayaking experience. This includes a properly fitting life jacket, appropriate clothing for the weather conditions, sunscreen, a hat, and a waterproof bag to protect your belongings from splashes. It is also a good idea to bring water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized during your adventure.

6. Plan for Parking and Transportation

Check for available parking options near the launch point of your kayaking adventure. During peak hours, parking can fill up quickly, so arrive early or consider using public transportation to reach your destination. Plan your logistics in advance to avoid any last-minute stress or delays.

By taking these steps to plan your kayaking adventure, you can ensure a safe and memorable experience exploring the captivating La Jolla Sea Caves. Prepare yourself for a breathtaking journey through nature’s incredible wonders, filled with excitement, discovery, and the joy of paddling along the stunning California coastline.

Safety Considerations

While kayaking the La Jolla Sea Caves can be an exhilarating experience, it is essential to prioritize safety to ensure a smooth and enjoyable adventure. Here are some important safety considerations to keep in mind:

1. Wear a Life Jacket

Always wear a properly fitting life jacket while kayaking in the La Jolla Sea Caves. Even if you are a confident swimmer, unexpected situations can arise, and a life jacket can provide crucial assistance in staying afloat and safe in the water.

2. Be Aware of Ocean Conditions

Pay attention to ocean conditions, including waves, tides, and currents, before and during your kayaking adventure. Check local forecasts and speak with experienced kayakers or tour operators for insights into the current conditions. Avoid kayaking during times of rough seas or high winds as it can make navigating the sea caves more challenging and potentially hazardous.

3. Stay Clear of Wildlife

While it may be tempting to get close to the marine life in the La Jolla Sea Caves, it is crucial to maintain a respectful distance. Some animals, such as seals and sea lions, may behave defensively if they feel threatened. Respect their space and observe from a safe distance to avoid any potential conflicts.

4. Use Proper Paddling Technique

Use correct paddling techniques to maximize efficiency and minimize the risk of strain or injury. Learn how to properly grip the paddle, use your core muscles for power, and maintain a balanced and stable posture in the kayak. Take breaks when needed and listen to your body to prevent fatigue or overexertion.

5. Plan for Changes in Weather

Weather conditions can change unexpectedly, especially out on the open water. Keep an eye on the sky and be prepared for potential shifts in weather patterns. If you notice dark clouds, high winds, or sudden drops in temperature, it may be best to return to shore and wait for more favorable conditions.

6. Communicate and Share Plans

Inform someone about your kayaking plans, including your intended route and estimated time of return. This provides an extra layer of safety in case of emergencies or if you encounter any difficulties during your adventure. Consider carrying a waterproof communication device, such as a cell phone in a dry bag, to call for help if needed.

By following these safety considerations, you can minimize risks and maximize the enjoyment of your kayaking experience in the La Jolla Sea Caves. Remember, safety should always be a top priority when exploring nature’s wonders, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty and splendor that awaits you in this extraordinary location.

Essential Gear for Kayaking the Sea Caves

When embarking on a kayaking adventure in the La Jolla Sea Caves, having the right gear is essential to ensure your safety, comfort, and enjoyment. Here are some key items you should consider bringing:

The most important piece of gear for kayaking the sea caves is, of course, a kayak. Whether you choose a sit-on-top kayak or a traditional sit-inside kayak, select a model suitable for your skill level and the conditions you will be paddling in. Consider renting a kayak if you don’t own one or join a guided tour where the kayaks are provided.

A sturdy and appropriately sized paddle is necessary for maneuvering your kayak through the sea caves. Choose a paddle with a comfortable grip and an appropriate length for your height. Paddles made of lightweight materials like carbon fiber or fiberglass can reduce fatigue during your adventure.

3. Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

A personal flotation device, commonly known as a PFD or life jacket, is critical for safety on the water. Look for a PFD that is specifically designed for kayaking and fits you snugly. Ensure it is properly fastened at all times while you are on the water.

Although not always necessary, wearing a helmet is recommended during kayaking in the sea caves, especially if you are a beginner or if there are rough conditions. A lightweight and well-fitted helmet can protect your head from potential impacts with rocks or other objects.

5. Wet Suit or Dry Suit

Depending on the time of year and the water temperature, you may need a wet suit or dry suit. These suits provide insulation and protection in colder waters, helping to regulate your body temperature and keeping you comfortable during your kayaking adventure.

6. Sun Protection

The sun can be intense while out on the water, so be sure to bring essentials for sun protection. This includes sunscreen with a high SPF, a hat to shield your face and neck from the sun, and sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes from the glare.

7. Waterproof Bag

Carrying a waterproof bag or dry bag is crucial for keeping your personal belongings safe and dry. You can store items like your phone, wallet, keys, and snacks in the bag to protect them from splashes or accidental submersion.

8. Water and Snacks

Staying hydrated is important during any outdoor adventure, so make sure to bring an ample supply of water. Pack lightweight and non-perishable snacks to keep your energy levels up during your kayaking excursion.

Remember, having the right gear can enhance your overall kayaking experience and contribute to a safe and enjoyable adventure in the La Jolla Sea Caves. Prioritize your comfort, safety, and preparedness to make the most of this unique and breathtaking exploration.

Launching Your Kayak

Launching your kayak properly is essential to ensure a smooth and successful start to your adventure in the La Jolla Sea Caves. Follow these steps to safely launch your kayak:

1. Find a Suitable Launch Location

Look for a designated launch area or a spot along the coastline that provides easy access to the water. Avoid launching from areas where there are heavy waves or strong currents, as this can make getting into your kayak challenging and potentially dangerous.

2. Prepare Your Gear

Ensure that all your gear, including your paddle, life jacket, and any other essentials, is securely in place and easily accessible. Double-check that your kayak is properly outfitted with any additional equipment or attachments, such as a spray skirt or rudder, if applicable.

3. Wade into the Water

Carry your kayak to the water’s edge and place it partially in the water, with the cockpit facing toward the open water. Wading into the water alongside your kayak will make it easier to get on board without dragging the kayak across the sand or rocks.

4. Position Yourself in the Kayak

Stand with one foot on either side of the cockpit and slowly lower yourself into the seat, ensuring stability as you go. Maintain a balanced posture and be mindful of any movements that may destabilize the kayak.

5. Launch Smoothly and Steadily

Once you are seated in the kayak, use your paddle to push yourself off from the shallow water and into deeper water. Take steady and controlled strokes with your paddle to propel yourself forward, maintaining a comfortable pace. Pay attention to any oncoming waves or boat traffic as you launch.

6. Adjust and Stabilize

As you move into deeper water, take a moment to adjust your position in the kayak and ensure that you feel stable and balanced. Make any necessary adjustments to your paddle grip, seat positioning, or footrests to optimize your comfort and control.

7. Join the Flow of Traffic

Once safely on the water, merge and navigate with the flow of other kayakers and watercraft in the area. Be aware of your surroundings, follow any designated routes or guidelines, and respect the right of way to ensure a safe and smooth kayaking experience.

Launching your kayak properly is crucial to start your sea cave exploration off on the right foot. By following these steps and being mindful of safety and etiquette, you can set yourself up for an enjoyable and memorable journey through the captivating La Jolla Sea Caves.

Everyone that visits San Diego should do one of the La Jolla Kayak tours at least once. There’s nothing more peaceful than going to spot gorgeous coves and intriguing caves in the calm ocean while the sun is shining.

Undoubtedly, La Jolla is one of the best places in San Diego for a kayaking adventure. There are numerous kayak tour opportunities from hillside towns. These tours allow visitors to hit the Pacific Ocean and see unique forms of nature and wildlife.

Greg and I love kayaking in La Jolla and it is always a fun outing. It is pretty beginner friendly too, so even if you have never been in a kayak before, this is totally doable. The only tricky part is getting through the waves on the shore, but the kayaking tour guides will help you through. You will get wet though, so I recommend leaving your valuables in the provided lockers or bringing a little floating dry bag to keep your things safe. Definitely wear sunscreen and I recommend a hat and, unless you wear only swimwear, some quick-drying clothes (or bring some to change into later).

Here’s our list of the top kayak tours in La Jolla, you must check these out during your visit!

An Unforgettable Experience

Adventure Begins!

can you kayak la jolla caves without a tour

Sea lions and pelicans bask on the rocks; cormorants nest on the cliff faces; giant bat rays ply the deep; brightly colored garibaldi seek shelter in the rocky shallows; schools of timid leopard sharks and rays feed in the sandy bottoms; and harbor seals eye us curiously from the kelp forests. While our ultimate destination is the magnificent sea caves that the ocean has carved from ancient cliffs, the true beauty of the area is all around the caves.

Please don't have your heart set on entering the caves as this is not always safe to do and cannot be guaranteed at any time. Instead, open your eyes to the details around you and you will never be disappointed!

We use stable sit-on-top kayaks that are very user friendly and no previous experience is required.

Please note, you will get wet ! This is part of the fun if you're prepared!

You have a choice among companies for your business. If you’re shopping for the best deal, make sure you’ve read the fine print.

We don’t charge hidden 'service fees' or charge extra for locker rental to keep your belongings safe.

Most companies limit availability at peak times for discounts like Groupon so you may find yourself unable to take advantage of the advertised discounts.

Our kayaks have weight limits.  We can accomodate 2 people on a tandem kayak at a combined total of 475 lbs. We can accommodate a single person on a kayak to 450 lbs.

We believe that outdoor adventure should be accessible to everyone and we will make every effort to to accomodate any disability that does not interfere with safe participation in this activity. Please call us to discuss necessary accommodations. For safe participation, guests must be able to maintain a seated position on the floor with moderate lower back support for an extended period of time. If you need a little extra help to accomplish this due to a spinal cord injury, please call us as we may be able to make suitable modifications. Please note that it is unsafe to seat-belt or strap a person to a kayak. Specific issues: Deaf: all pertinent information is provided in writing. Blind: bring your own tandem paddling partner, or call us to arrange for one to be provided. Amputations: modifications available with advance notice - call us!

We want your kids to love their adventure on the ocean!

Children under 14 must be on a tandem kayak with a parent or guardian. Children 14-16 yrs must be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian (but may paddle their own kayak). Children 16-18 yrs may participate unaccompanied by a parent or guardian, but a parent or legal guardian must sign a liability waiver on behalf of the minor.

Children under 18 must be able to swim and adults must be comfortable floating in a PFD (life jacket) in deep water without panic.

PFD's must be worn at all times.

What to Expect

Be prepared to get wet!

We launch through small surf and paddle 2-3 miles. You will exert about as much effort as walking the same distance. If you paddle a two person kayak, you will share some of the effort. You will be on the water for 90 minutes.

We will meet at our La Jolla Shores shop where you will check in, sign waivers (no one will be permitted on the tour without signing our liability waiver), and change clothes if needed. There are changing rooms and a restroom at our shop. We will outfit you with a life jacket, paddle, and helmet. If you would like a wetsuit, we have those available for rent as well. We provide complimentary lockers to leave your personal belongings in our shop during your tour.  You will be happy to have a towel and dry clothes waiting for you when you return.

After a brief introduction, you will walk with your guide(s) 3 blocks to the beach where your kayak will be waiting. There you will have a brief paddle instruction and safety talk before launching. Aside from providing lots of interesting information about this incredible Marine Protected Area, your knowledgeable guides are trained to assess the ever-changing hazards of the dynamic Pacific Ocean with the objective of keeping you safe.  We'll say it again here: we cannot guarantee your entry into the sea caves as sometimes they are simply too dangerous.  What we can guarantee is that the beauty of one of California's most diverse coastlines will be all around you. So look up at the nesting peregrine falcons and cormorantts on the cliffs, the sea lions hauled out on the stunning rock formations, the geological history recorded in them;,and scan the waters for our resident sea turtle, leopard sharks, and visiting dolphins.  You won't be disappointed!

Free parking is available on the side streets around the shop. The spots marked “90 minutes” on Avenida de la Playa do not allow enough time.

What to Bring and Wear

  • bathing suit and/or quick-dry shorts/shirt/rash guard (spandex, nylon, polyester, "sport" blends, etc). If it's cool, a windbreaker will keep you warm, or you can rent a wetsuit ($10). We have changing rooms and a restroom in our shop and complimentory lockers for your belongings
  • Cotton clothing is discouraged (it is heavy and cold when wet) and jeans are never permitted.
  • shoes - most people choose to kayak barefoot and you can leave your footwear at our launch site. Wearing water shoes or "river" sandals is also a good choice
  • hat - optional.  You will be wearing a helmet, so not all hats will fit underneath, but ball caps and floppy sun hats usually do.
  • water - it's not necessary to take it on your tour, but be sure you're well hydrated beforehand!
  • sun screen (available for purchase at our shop).  The tops of your feet and shins are often overlooked - they will be very exposed while paddling a sit-on-top kayak.
  • If you wear glasses, it is VERY IMPORTANT to have a retainer strap! You can purchase these at our store.
  • If you are prone to sea sickness, consider taking precautions.  Over the counter medications need to be taken well in advance of your adventure.  Ginger candy may also be an effective preventative
  • You will be happy to have a towel and dry clothes waiting at our shop when you return.  We provide complimentary lockers for your personal belongings. Please leave behind anything that can't get wet or might sink to the sea floor (cell phones, pagers, wallets, car keys, non-waterproof watches, loose jewelry, non-waterproof cameras, etc). We have waterproof cases for purchase for your cell phone if you would like to take pictures of your adventure.

7 Fantastic Spots To Go Snorkeling In San Diego

S an Diego gets plenty of recognition for its idyllic beaches and rugged coastline, but many don’t give credit for its fantastic snorkeling.

It may come as a surprise to you that snorkeling in San Diego is one of the best ways to enjoy a beach visit. Colorful marine life, huge kelp beds, and sea caves are all waiting to be explored. And did you know that you can even snorkel with sharks in San Diego? Each summer, leopard sharks come to La Jolla to hatch their young and snorkeling is the best way to see them. Don’t worry, they are totally harmless. You should still keep your distance and never touch or disturb them in other ways.

We’ve created a comprehensive guide for eager snorkelers heading to San Diego. Most of the snorkeling spots are located in the neighborhood of La Jolla , but there are some San Diego snorkeling spots closer to downtown as well. This article is complete with the top snorkeling spots, must-do tours, and the best-rated equipment and everything else you might want to know about snorkeling in San Diego.

Best Spots To Go Snorkeling In San Diego

La jolla cove.

La Jolla Cove is, without a doubt, San Diego’s most famed spot for snorkeling. A title it most definitely deserves.

Part of the La Jolla Underwater Park , during summer, enhanced visibility in this underwater park allows snorkelers to swim with leopard sharks and vibrant garibaldi fish. The sea lions which lounge by the rocks may even join you!

You can rest easy knowing that lifeguards are permanently stationed here, making it a safe spot to explore for confident swimmers.

You can find paid parking at the nearby La Jolla Financial Building. For those who arrive early enough, you should be able to snag free street parking for up to 2 – 3 hours. Don’t stay underwater too long or risk a hefty fine for overstaying your parking limits.

La Jolla Shores Beach

Staying in La Jolla but heading a bit further north is La Jolla Shores.

La Jolla Shores is a family-friendly beach where kids can get in on the snorkeling action thanks to calm conditions and shallow waters.

You have the option to bring your own gear or rent some from one of the many snorkel rental spots in the neighborhood.

Easily accessed behind the Marine Room restaurant, swimmers can dive by the kelp beds and spot the sting rays that frequent the waters.

Similar to La Jolla Cove, this area tends to get busy later in the day. Start your day early and find a space at the free parking lot right on the beachfront.

Turtle Town

There are no prizes for guessing why this spot in La Jolla’s marine sanctuary got its name. Turtle Town is home to adorable young and old sea turtles swimming alongside schools of brightly colored fish.

Known as one of San Diego’s closely guarded secrets, it’s easy to see why it’s gotten this reputation, it can be notoriously tricky to find.

Between The Marine Room restaurant and La Jolla Cove, look out for red and green kelp plants, where the turtles tend to congregate.

Due to its hard-to-reach location, this spot is best for avid snorkelers and strong swimmers. This spot isn’t recommended for little ones.

Seven Sea Caves

Yet another La Jolla snorkeling hot spot is the Seven Sea Caves. These are located just east of La Jolla Cove and consist of seven uniquely named caves that line the coast.

Join the halibut, mackerel, and rays which spend their days swimming beside caves named Clam, Shopping Cart, and Jim.

Accessed from the same entry points as Turtle Town, this is also a popular spot for swimmers and kayakers . This spot is best explored through group tours which can guide you to the safest sites. Additionally, it’s advisable to leave the younger snorkelers at home for this one.

Devil’s Slide

Close to the Seven Sea Caves is Devil’s Slide, which is a relatively challenging place for a San Diego snorkeling experience.

Though the waters are shallow, this area sits at the base of the sea cliffs, making it difficult to reach.

Small fish, like zebra perch and anchovies, can be found along the cliffside, while sea lions and rays are also commonly spotted. With a bit of luck, snorkelers can cast their eyes on horn sharks and octopuses.

If you’re not the strongest of swimmers, Devil’s Slide may not be the safest choice. Especially as it’s not the most accessible area for lifeguards.

Mission Point Beach

We’re moving away from snorkeling in La Jolla this time and heading further south towards downtown. Cue chilled-out Mission Point Park.

Located on Mission Bay, the beach here has some of the most pleasant waters for snorkeling in San Diego.

Its warm and calm conditions make it the perfect place to take the kids.

Often an underrated spot for a glimpse of marine life, you won’t have to worry about getting here early. There are plenty of free parking lots nearby.

Park up and take to the sea, where you’ll find kelp fish, senoritas, eels, and octopus.

Shell Beach And Boomer Beach

It’s clear by now that La Jolla is home to the majority of San Diego’s most desirable snorkeling spots. For this reason, it can be difficult to avoid the crowds which flock to the most well-known locations.

Just north of Children’s Pool Beach are the quieter Shell and Boomer beaches. These spots have no stairs down to the shore, requiring a little climbing. But the result is a much more peaceful beach when you get to the end.

Swim out until you reach the kelp beds, where you can swim amongst friendly sea lions and countless sardines.

If luck is on your side, you may cross paths with a migrating grey whale or even see harbor seals chilling out.

Due to the challenging climb down and the rougher seas, snorkeling here is only recommended for experienced swimmers.
