About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Greece and Israel. You do not need a visa for Greece.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Greece to determine what travel documentation is required.

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the cruise ship, your passport will be held by the purser until you disembark.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies .

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

A doctor and limited medical facilities are available onboard. However, if you take special medications, please bring an adequate supply with you; they may not be available onboard. Medical services and all medicines (except acetaminophen, aspirin and anti-nausea pills) dispensed to you by the ship's doctor will be charged to your shipboard account. If you become ill during the voyage and the physician is unable to care for your needs onboard, you will be transferred to medical facilities onshore.

The Windstar cruise ships are registered in the Bahamas. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot.  Many of the sites visited were built in antiquity and have many steps and uneven surfaces. It is important that you wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in. The amount of walking that you choose to do, however, is at your discretion. Additionally, you should be steady on your feet to circumnavigate the decks of the ship while cruising on the Aegean Sea. Some ship-to-shore transportation is by local tender.  Occasionally you may get wet with spray.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches or inside the ship, including inside staterooms. Smoking is only permitted on the outer decks in the designated smoking areas. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here .

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering.  Most days are spent outside or in transit. Therefore, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Breezy days at sea and cool evenings will require warmer, layered clothing. A jacket and tie are not required for gentlemen aboard ship, but may be preferred or required at some local restaurants.

The "casual elegance" of a small cruise ship is also reflected in the way their guests' dress. We recommend that you wear relaxed and comfortable clothing, as you would at an elegant land resort. For women's daytime wear, we suggest walking shorts, skirts, sarongs, lightweight tops and cover-ups; for evening wear - sun dresses, pants, or informal cocktail attire. For men's daytime wear, we suggest Bermuda shorts, polo shirts, and khaki pants; in the evening - lightweight trousers and short-sleeved dress or polo shirts. No suits or ties are required. Shorts, jeans, and t-shirts are not permitted in the restaurant during the evening.

Most importantly, bring comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in. It is important that your shoes have good ankle support, as we visit some ancient sites where paths and stairs may be uneven and unpaved.

Valet laundry service is available at the hotel listed on this itinerary. On board the ship, next-day laundry and pressing service is available; dry cleaning services, irons and ironing boards are not available.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for cruising on the Aegean Sea:

Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella

Short and long-sleeved shirts/tee shirts (for the warmer, summer months extra tee shirts are always a good idea)

Shorts (for summer) and pants for casual daytime wear

Sport coat for men (suggested but not required) and slacks/dress for women for evening wear

Sweater; lightweight for summer, and medium weight for spring/fall

Camera, lenses, chargers, batteries and extra memory cards

Sunscreen and hat

Small flashlight

Insect repellent

Washcloth - not all European hotels provide washcloths, so you may want to bring one along.   A package of pre-moistened towlettes is an excellent alternative.

Travel alarm clock (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)

Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags

Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor.  While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed.  What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.

The Mediterranean and Aegean coasts of Greece and Turkey enjoy long hot dry summers and mild winters. Summer temperatures in Greece and Turkey are tempered by the Etesian northerly wind which blows across the Aegean Sea, and breezes called "meltemia", however, mainland temperatures are often very high. Winters are mild and wet, although rainfall is generally low in most areas.

Day 1: Departure

Today we embark on our Journey to the Holy Land. Prepare yourself for a life-changing experience. Get some rest on the flight…tomorrow you will be walking where Jesus walked!

Day 2: Arrive Israel

cruises israel to greece

Arrive in Israel and travel northward to our hotel for one night in the coastal area near Tel Aviv. The remainder of the day is free to walk along the Mediterranean, relax, and have dinner. The time is right for a personal devotional with the sunset over the “Great Sea.” Meet your Israeli guide, enjoy a time of prayer of thanks for safety and the special blessings ahead, a prayer for the people of the "Promised Land," and a good night’s rest.

Day 3: Caesarea, Megiddo, & Nazareth

cruises israel to greece

After breakfast, we travel by private motor coach along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea to Caesarea, where Gentiles first heard the Good News from Peter and were baptized. We’ll see the Roman Amphitheatre, hippodrome, a film on history and the remains of this famous port city, an aqueduct, and then journey through the Mt. Carmel range, where Elijah challenged King Ahab and the prophets of Baal. Next we travel through the Jezreel Valley to Megiddo, the Armageddon battlefield, where archaeologists have unearthed 20 levels of civilization. We drive through the area of Cana and Nazareth, the boyhood home of Jesus, where we visit the Nazareth Village, a wonderful recreation of Biblical times with costumed guides. We will have dinner and overnight lodging for the next three nights along the Sea of Galilee.

Day 4: Dan, Caesarea Philippi, Jesus Boat, Sea of Galilee Boat Ride, Magdala

cruises israel to greece

Following breakfast, our morning travels take us to two valuable northern sites. Dan is where the children of Israel fell to the depths of alternative sacrifice and Caesarea Philippi, the site of Peter’s confession and pagan worship. We pass the possible site of the multiplication of loaves and fishes in Bethsaida and the Mount of the Beatitudes. Returning to Galilee for a St. Peter’s fish lunch (other selections available), we then visit the ancient fisherman boat followed by a relaxing cruise on the Sea of Galilee. A brief scripture reading and devotional on board brings to life the experiences of Jesus and the fishermen disciples. We conclude our day with a visit to Magdala, hometown of Mary Magdalene. The recent excavation of the first century synagogue and well-preserved village makes Magdala one of the most interesting Biblical sites in Israel.

Day 5: Capernaum, Corazin, Mt. Arbel, Jordan River Baptism Site

cruises israel to greece

Today we visit the Biblical towns of Capernaum and Corazin. Capernaum is located along the Sea of Galilee and was the hometown of Peter. It is likely where Jesus and the disciples lived during much of His ministry while in Galilee. Next, we visit Corazin which offers another example of a Jewish synagogue and a replica of the “Seat of Moses” which was carved out of the local basalt block and from which the scribes and Pharisees would have read the Torah. We enjoy a bird’s eye view of the Galilee region atop Mt. Arbel. Mt. Arbel could likely be the location that Jesus would get away from the crowds to take time in prayer with His heavenly Father. Here our guide will point out the various towns listed in scripture during the time of Jesus. We conclude our day with an opportunity to be baptized at the Jordan River Baptismal Site.

Day 6: Beit Shean, Bethany Beyond Jordan, Abraham's Tent, Mt. of Olives & Garden of Gethsemane

cruises israel to greece

We travel southward this morning to Beit-Shean/Scythopolis, the most magnificent archeological site in Israel, located at the strategic juncture of the Jezreel and Jordan valleys. Like Jericho, it has been almost continuously occupied throughout history. After defeating Saul and his sons on Mt. Gilboa, the Philistines hanged their bodies on the walls of Beit-Shean. During the time of Jesus, Scythopolis was one of the chief cities of the Decapolis - a league of ten cities sharing Greek culture and government. Following the fertile Jordan Valley southward, your guide will point out the agricultural restoration of the “Land of Milk and Honey” and Israel’s intricate irrigation development. We pass ancient Jericho and view from a distance this city famed as the oldest in the world. To the east of Jericho along the Jordan River Valley (Queser El Yehud) is the Israeli side of Bethany Beyond the Jordan. In this area Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist; Elijah and Elisha crossed the Jordan; and the children of Israel, led by Joshua, entered the Promised Land. This afternoon we will take part in the Genesis Land/Dinner in Abraham's Tent, where we enjoy a trip back in time to relive life in the time of the Patriarchs, complete with costume, dramatic presentation, camel ride and authentic food. Arriving in Jerusalem we’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the Old City atop the Mt. of Olives and then the Garden of Gethsemane. How many have wished to be whisked back in time to get a glimpse of our Lord or hear His voice if only for a moment? To walk between the ancient olive trees, read the scriptures of Jesus' prayer and take time for personal reflection is important here. We will have dinner and overnight lodging for the next four nights in Jerusalem.

Day 7: Masada, Ein Gedi, Dead Sea Scrolls, Dead Sea Swim

cruises israel to greece

Our day begins with a cable car ride to the mountain top fortress of Masada. Here our guide will treat us to the history of the famous zealot stand. Afterwards we proceed to Ein Gedi, "Spring of the Goat," an oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea. Because of its warm climate and abundant supply of water, the site developed a reputation for its fragrant plants and date palm groves. This is where King David hid from Saul and where God defeated the enemies of the Israelites by praise and worship led by King Jehoshaphat. Next, we visit the Qumran Caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. This afternoon we have an opportunity to enjoy a relaxing float in the Dead Sea.

Day 8: Jesus’ Steps, Western Walls, Southern Steps, Way of Suffering, Garden Tomb

cruises israel to greece

Today we walk where Jesus walked, beginning the day with a visit to the Wailing Wall and then the fascinating Rabbinical Tunnels leading us through the Second Temple era. The tunnel and exhibit give a clear understanding of the amazing construction of the Temple Mount, giant stones, water supply and Roman street where our Lord was led to judgment. Before exiting the tunnel, we see the immense cornerstone rejected by the builders. Next, we visit the Southern Wall Excavations. This southern side of The Temple was the main entrance for the common folk, whereas the Priests and Levites had their own entrance from the higher eastern side. Parts of the giant stairs, which led to the Temple Mount from the courtyard have been unearthed along with the purification pools. From here Jesus entered the Temple Mount and drove out the vendors and money exchangers who were exploiting the people. It is also likely that this is the place where Peter stood and preached and where thousands were saved and baptized on the Day of Pentecost. This afternoon we move on to the Judgment Hall of Pilate, hear of those who conspired against Him and are reminded of His brutal beating and humiliation. From here we will also be able to see the Pool of Bethesda, Stephen's Gate, and St. Anne’s Church. While walking along the Via Dolorosa, we are reminded of His way of suffering along with a visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Our guide will explain the differing opinions on the route where Christ was led. (The actual place of crucifixion and burial is a very interesting study!) The climax of the day is the area of Golgotha (place of the skull) and the Garden Tomb, where we celebrate the resurrection with communion and a time of praise.

Day 9: Israel Museum, Friends of Zion Museum, Bethlehem

cruises israel to greece

An interesting and educational time awaits us today at the Israeli Museum. Walk through collections of century’s old Israeli artifacts including the Dead Sea Scrolls, and then a guided walk through an accurately detailed model of Biblical Jerusalem. This model will help put into perspective all that you have seen over the previous days’ touring. We then visit the Friends of Zion Museum to learn of the 19th and 20th century heroes of the Jewish people. We spend the remainder of the day surrounding the birth of Christ with a visit to Bethlehem. This evening we enjoy a special lecture by a local believer prior to dinner, giving us a perspective of Messianic life in Israel.

Day 10: Arrive Athens

cruises israel to greece

We fly to Athens and check into our hotel. You will have the remainder of the day free to relax or take a stroll along the streets of Athens to enjoy the flavor of the city. This evening our group will enjoy the first of many delectable European style dinners.

Day 11: Cruising Mykonos

We sail this morning from Athens to the quaint isle of Mykonos, called the island of windmills. Experience the waterfront lined with shops and cafes and then stroll the charming walkways through a maze of whitewashed buildings before returning to the ship for dinner and evening entertainment.

Day 12: Ephesus and Patmos

Docking in Turkey, enjoy a tour of Ephesus, the city of the Bible and one of the largest restorations still in progress with miles of ancient treasures. Ephesus was once a thriving port town of 250,000 people. Today you can still see the spectacular excavations of the major streets in this ancient city including the Agora, the Odeon, the Library, the marble-paved main Street, the Baths, Trajan’s Fountain, the Residences of the Patricians, the Prytaneum, and Temple of Hadrian. The Great Theatre, built in the 4th century B.C., could accommodate 24,000 spectators and it is famous even nowadays for its acoustics. This afternoon we visit the Isle of Patmos, under statutory protection as a historic monument. Here we have a tour to see the fortified monastery of St. John and the cave claimed to be where John received the Revelation. Back on the ship, enjoy the Captain's dinner before settling in to your cabin for the night.

Day 13: Crete & Beautiful Santorini

cruises israel to greece

Crete is the largest and the most rugged of the Greek islands. Take a tour to Heraklion and the fantastic ruins of the Palace of Knossos. Discovered in 1899 and partially reconstructed, the elaborate Palace is believed to be the mythical Labyrinth of King Minos and the seat of ancient Minoan culture. This afternoon visit the island of Santorini which is perhaps the most breathtaking of all the Greek Islands. You may choose to take an optional panoramic bus tour viewing some of the most spectacular scenery of the Aegean. Travel through countless villages and settlements with delicate architecture and beauties eventually arriving in Oia. During your time in Oia, visit the many narrow streets, open-air cafes and glittering boutiques. Upon returning to the ship, we view the lace-like caldera, the little islands of Thirasia, Palea, & Nea Kameni. We arrive at the ship for dinner and evening entertainment.

Day 14: Disembark Cruise – Ancient Corinth & Cenchreae

cruises israel to greece

We disembark the cruise this morning and travel west with a rest stop and photos at the Corinth Canal. Next, we visit ancient Corinth, the city that inspired many of Paul's most familiar letters and is a highlight for the New Testament scholar. See the Archaeological Museum, the Market Place, the Bema, and the Temples. To enjoy a devotional in the midst of the ruins of the church of Corinth and see the pillars, steps, and public worship place where Paul preached will enhance your understanding and love for the Bible. The ruins of this important cultural center are fascinating as we walk along the stone path that the Apostle Paul walked. The engineering skill and intellect of these people are evident in the water systems that still flow from ancient to modern day. Our guide will be sure to show you the room dedicated to the medical care of that period. We travel on to the top of the nearby Acropolis where our guide will speak on the worship practices and point out the bird’s eye view of what was a bustling city of around 800,000 during Paul’s stay. Another important stop is a visit to Diolkos where we view the paved trackway which enabled boats to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth and served as a life line for Corinth. This shortcut allowed ancient vessels to avoid the long and dangerous circumnavigation of the Peloponnese peninsula. Before returning to Athens, we will visit Cenchreae, the ancient port region of Corinth. Acts 18:18 states the Apostle Paul stopped at Cenchreae during his second missionary journey, where he had his hair cut to fulfill a vow.

Day 15: Athens

cruises israel to greece

Following breakfast this morning we tour Athens, the foundation of democracy. We visit the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and Erectheum before viewing Athens atop Mars Hill where Paul stood and preached the truth to the Gentile nation. From atop Mars Hill we view the Agora below, the ancient market place and center of Athenian public life. Additional sites viewed during our panoramic bus tour are, the House of Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Olympic Stadium, and Presidential Palace. An option later this afternoon is a visit to the famous Plaka with a multitude of shops and cafes.

Day 16: Home

A very early morning departure for the Athens Airport for our flight homeward will allow for arrival home by early afternoon.

Important Note: Although the itinerary above obviously emphasizes the spiritual aspect of this marvelous country, our guides are also experts in and passionate about the miracle of the return of the Jews and the restoration of the state of Israel. This fact, along with many modern day topics (military, politics, education, and other cultural aspects), will be woven into the commentary in order to give you well rounded information.

*The tour itinerary is subject to change or be slightly modified in order to best meet the interests of the group.

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Route Review

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Port: Rhodes, Greece

The first stop on our cruise was Rhodes/Lindos, Greece . Rhodes is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the Mediterranean. The island’s rich history and beautiful scenery make it a perfect place to explore. Rhodes is also home to a number of excellent restaurants and shops.

Cruise passengers often enjoy visiting Rhodes Town, which is the capital of Rhodes. Rhodes Town is home to a number of historic landmarks, including the Palace of the Grand Master. Other popular attractions in Rhodes include Lindos, which is an ancient Greek city, and the Valley of the Butterflies, which is a nature reserve.

Rhodes Greece Castle

We booked the “ Discovering the City of Rhodes ” excursion with MSC.

Tour Description: “Famed as the former site of the Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and as one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities, Rhodes is well worth a visit and this excursion gives you a chance to explore its many attractions.

The excursion includes a sightseeing tour before discovering the city on foot. As you make your way around the old part of the city, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, you will visit the magnificent 15th-century Grand Master’s Palace. Sadly, the original Palace was largely destroyed by an explosion; the sympathetic medieval style rebuild was taken in hand by occupying Italians in 1912. You will also have a chance to stroll down the famous Street of Knights with its many medieval inns, named for the homelands of their guests in days gone by. Your tour ends with some time at leisure before returning to the ship.”

Rhodes Greece Castle

My Review: Discovering the City of Rhodes Excursion

We enjoyed this tour and getting to explore Rhodes , but it was fairly crowded (as you often get when traveling in summer). Our guide was knowledgeable and we enjoyed getting time to explore by ourselves and do tons of shopping! You must check out the village with all the shops, they’re endless and so many great buys!

There was a pretty good amount of walking (sometimes not on even ground) so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Port: Santorini, Greece

Santorini is INCREDIBLE. It’s literally like a postcard. It’s no wonder Santorini is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world. The island is famous for its dramatic cliffs, bright blue waters, and quaint white-washed villages. Santorini is also home to a number of interesting historical sites, including the remains of a Minoan settlement and an ancient volcano. Visitors can take advantage of the island’s many hiking trails, go swimming or snorkeling in the clear waters, or simply relax on one of the many beaches.

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Review Greece

We went on the “ Amazing Santorini ” excursion.

Tour Description: “Exciting, exclusive, edifying: three attributes that not only aptly describe this tour, but also the Greek island of Santorini itself, which was created when the crater left by a huge volcanic eruption collapsed, leaving only the rim, a so-called caldera. After a short boat ride to Athinios port, you will continue by coach to explore the island’s history, capital, and dramatic landscape.

First up is Oia, a blue-and-white village in Cycladic style perched on the very edge of the caldera. After a guided walk through its pretty cobbled streets and some free time for a total of one hour, reach Fira, Santorini’s capital, for a short photo stop in the old quarter. You will visit a local winery giving you a chance to sample local delicacies made of cheese, tomatoes, olives, and bread accompanied by a delicious wine tasting session.

Last up is ancient Akrotiri, a town that flourished during the Minoan Bronze Age, but then fell victim to a major volcanic outbreak that covered it in ash in the middle of the 2nd millennium B.C.. Since excavation work began in 1967, many extremely well-preserved artifacts have been uncovered, including frescoes and even some three-story buildings. You will have about 40 minutes to enjoy this prehistoric site before boarding the coach, reach Athinios port where a motorboat awaits to take you back to the ship.”

My Review: Amazing Santorini Excursion

This excursion was great! First, we went to the infamous Oia. Luckily, since we went early, it wasn’t too crowded. We had free time to wander around and take photos which I highly recommend you do!

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Review - Santorini Port

P ro tip: Be patient when taking photos, there are going to be a lot of people trying to get the same shot. And angles are always your friend 😉

Santorini Excursion

We grabbed a coffee and beer at a cute little cafe called Lotza that had amazing views. Yes, that photo below is the actual view and no filter – definitely worth a stop!!

Beer with a View in Santorini

Next up on the excursion was a visit to Anhydrous winery for a tasting. Personally, I thought they were a littleeee stingy on the pours, but it was included with the tour and a nice little stop.

cruises israel to greece

After a little wine, we headed to the Prehistoric town of Akrotiri. Akrotiri is one of the most important archaeological sites on the island. The settlement was buried by a massive volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, and as a result, it has been well-preserved.

Akrotiri was first excavated in the early 20th century, and since then, it has provided a wealth of information about life in the prehistoric Aegean. The site includes a number of well-preserved houses, as well as a number of artworks and artifacts. Akrotiri is also home to an impressive collection of murals, which provide insight into the culture and beliefs of the people who lived there.

MSC Cruise Akrotiri Excursion

Last on our MSC excursion was Fira, Santorini’s capital. We had ample time to wander and explore and get some lunch. After you make your own way to the boat via the cable car down to the port and then a tender back onto the cruise ship.

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Port: Athens, Greece

Athens is the capital city of Greece with a history that dates back over 3,000 years. It is best known for its ancient ruins, which include the Parthenon temple, and it is also home to numerous museums and art galleries. Athens is a popular port of call for cruise ships due to its abundant historical and cultural landmarks. The city is easily explored by foot, and there are many tours available through MSC .

MSC Cruise Excursion - Best of Athens

In Athens, we went on the “Athens & Visit to The Acropolis” excursion .

Tour Description: “Take some time off the ship and head for Athens for a comprehensive sightseeing tour through the main streets and squares of a city steeped in classical history. Not only is Athens widely regarded as the cradle of western civilization and the birthplace of modern democracy, it is also a cornucopia of visual delights you will not want to miss.

After the city tour, you will continue on to Athens’ premiere landmark: the imposing Acropolis, a plateau that overlooks the town at a height of 150 metres. Among various other examples of classical Grecian architecture, the site is home to the world-famous Parthenon, a huge temple dedicated to the ancient Greek goddess, Athena, and one of the world’s greatest cultural monuments. A brief stop will be made for some souvenir shopping before the tour concludes with your return to the ship.”

My Review: Athens & Visit to The Acropolis Excursion

This tour was not our favorite. Unfortunately, our guide was quite soft-spoken and it was hard to hear/understand him which made him not the most engaging.  However, the tour did take us to see some great sites though, and I think it would be great normally — the guides can just make or break a tour. I would still book this and give it another chance, I just like to be totally honest with my readers 🙂

We first had a quick visit to the Olympic stadium.

cruises israel to greece

After that and a drive around the city, we headed to the main event: The Acropolis . It truly is amazing to see these incredible pieces of history/architecture that are still standing today.

Acropolis Athens Greece MSC Excursion

Not to mention, the view of the city from the top is stunning! I had no idea Athens was going to be so beautiful.

Best of Athens Tour with MSC

Be aware, that it’s a lot of walking/stair climbing, and the ground is marble so it’s VERY slippery. I would recommend wearing shoes with a bit of grip if you have them. And also be preprepared for the crowds, it’s a popular spot!

MSC Best of Athens Tour

After the Acropolis, we were given free time to explore the little shopping village nearby and grab some lunch before heading back to the ship. Again, I would still recommend this tour, it took us to a lot of great spots, but I hope you get a different guide. Another great option with more in-depth history would be the “Plaka, Acropolis & Archaeological Museum” excursion .

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Port: Kusadasi, Turkey

Kusadasi is a beautiful Turkish resort town located on the Aegean Sea. It is known for its stunning beaches, crystal clear water, and lively nightlife. Kusadasi is also home to the ancient city of Ephesus, one of the most well-preserved Roman ruins in the world. A visit to Kusadasi is not complete without a tour of Ephesus, where you can stroll down the marble streets and imagine what life was like in this once-great city.

Tour Description: “Designed to give you a one-day overview of three of the best tourist sites around Kusadasi, this full-day excursion combines faith, ancient history, culture, and shopping. Leaving the port of Kusadasi, the first destination will be the House of the Virgin Mary, a place sacred to both Christians and Muslims. It is considered to be the place where the Virgin Mary spent the last years of her earthly life around the end of the first century. You will visit the site, which consists of a small chapel with a single room housing the statue of the Virgin in the centre, a small side room where the Virgin is believed to have slept, and an outer wall where pilgrims leave their prayers on small pieces of paper.

Next, board the coach and start a journey to ancient history by visiting the extensive archaeological site of Ephesus. Follow your guide to discover the wonders of this ancient city: the Library of Celsus, the Agora, the marble street where many of the shops where situated, the remains of Hadrian’s Temple, of which only two columns supporting an arch remain and the theatre, which could seat up to 14.000 people, and the baths.

A visit to the Ephesus Archaeological Museum is also on the itinerary. This small museum in Selcuk boasts an incredible collection of Hellenistic and Roman statues, carved reliefs and artifacts unearthed from the ruins of Ephesus. The famous statue of Artemis (goddess of fertility) is housed here.

Next, it is time to take a break and sit in a restaurant for a delicious lunch and recover strength. On the way back to the port, enjoy a panoramic drive passing by Isa Bey Mosque, the very old Turkish bath ruins, and a Temple of Artemis. Some time for shopping opportunity and to enjoy a carpet weaving demonstatrion concludes your excursion.”

MSC Cruise to Ephesus

My Review: Best of Kusadasi Excursion

W e really really enjoyed this excursion ! Contrary to our tour guide the day before (in Athens), our guide in Kusadasi was fantastic ! He was engaging, informative, and entertaining.

The first stop on our excursion was to The House of the Virgin Mary . Regardless of your religious views, it’s pretty humbling to be where Mary is said to have lived after Jesus died. It’s a beautiful site and definitely worth seeing when visiting Kusadasi.

MSC Cruise Excursion House of Virgin Mary

Next up: The ancient city of Ephesus . The city was known for its Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the Library of Celsus, one of the largest libraries in the ancient world. Now, it is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ephesus MSC Cruise Excursion

It really is pretty incredible that these buildings/ruins are still standing. The detail in the stonework is amazing as well.

MSC Cruise Excursion Ephesus

It was VERY hot the day we visited. If you’re going in the summer, I would definitely recommend wearing a hat and bringing a fan ( this is the one I use ). Like at the Acropolis, the ground is marble and can be very slick. Be extra careful and consider wearing shoes with grip.

MSC Cruise Excursion Ephesus Turkey

The tour includes entry into the Ephesus Archaeological Museum . It houses many items excavated from Ephesus, including its best-known ancient statue of the Greek Goddess Artemis.

After the museum, we took an unexpected pit stop at Donna Milan — a random, side-of-the-road leather goods store. To be honest, I didn’t love this part of the tour. Basically, we were forced to watch a fashion show of leather goods and then sent into a showroom where they tried to sell us leather jackets, purses, etc. I understand this is how these shops make their money, but it felt like a little much.

cruises israel to greece

After sitting in the showroom for a little longer than we’d have liked to, we headed to lunch (included). The tour concluded with a carpet weaving demonstration… and another sales pitch to buy rugs/jewelry/leather goods. Regardless of which tour you choose, this is probably going to happen so just be ready for it and be patient 🙂

There is some good shopping once you return back to the port. If you’re in the market for some reallllyy good designer knock-off bags and goods, this is the place to buy!

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Review: Kusadasi, Turkey Mini Vlog .

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Port: Haifa, Israel

The last stop on our MSC Mediterranean Cruise was Haifa/Jerusalem, Israel . Haifa is Israel’s largest port and the closest to get to Jerusalem by cruise. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and one of the oldest cities in the world. The city is considered holy by Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and its history goes back to the Biblical era. Jerusalem is a city with many different cultures and religions, and it is considered a symbol of peace and tolerance. It’s a pretty incredible place to visit on a cruise!

Haifa Cruise Port MSC

We booked the “Jersusalem” excursion .

Tour Description : “Come with us on a 2-hour drive to Jerusalem, one of the most inspiring cities in the world and renowned for its historical significance, spiritual symbolism, and visual splendour.

Your excursion will begin with a stop at Mount Scopus to enjoy the breathtaking view. The visit continues with a walking tour through the old town of Jerusalem. Pass Dung Gate, the Western Wall – the remains of the second temple destroyed by Romans in 70 AD and the most sacred Jewish shrine in Jerusalem. Walk along a part of the “Via Dolorosa”, considered by Christians to be the holiest road in the world, the path where Jesus was led to death. You can also admire the Church of the Holy Sepulchre without entering the tomb.

A stop to enjoy a lunch based on traditional food will be followed by a trip to a souvenir store in Jerusalem, from where we will drive back to Haifa port.”

MSC Jerusalem Excursion

My Review: Jerusalem Excursion

Prepare for a longggg day! It’s a 3-hour drive just from the cruise port to Jerusalem , but it is definitely worth it!! We first drove up to Mount Scopus which provided a beautiful view of the city:

MSC Mediterranean Cruise Tour of Jerusalem

Then the bus dropped us off outside the gates of the city to begin exploring! Our guide took us through to the Western Wall – known in the West as the Wailing Wall, and in Islam as the Buraq Wall, which is an ancient limestone wall in the Old City of Jerusalem.

MSC Cruise Tour Jerusalem

We continued on through the city. It was so interesting to see the different quarters (Jewish, Muslim, Armenian, and Christian) and the actual stations of the cross.

MSC Cruise Tour Jerusalem

Be prepared, it is very crowded and hectic, but worth it! If you go during the summer months, it’s very hot as well — I recommend bringing a hat and a fan.

We continued on to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre where Jesus’ tomb is believed to be. It is incredible inside and very humbling to see.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

We were taken to another “exclusive shopping spot,” — again, I didn’t love this part but I do get it.

After, we headed to a sort of random hotel for a buffet lunch. We weren’t sure what to think initially, but the food was surprisingly delicious! I think they needed a large place to provide lunch for all the MSC Cruise tours. It was one of the best meals we had!

Then it was back to the ship. There was some serious traffic (which is common) so we took a different route back and got to see the Dead Sea off in the distance and drive along the Jordan border which was cool.

Dead Sea MSC Cruise

I had several people ask about safety in Israel . Personally, I felt pretty safe, especially with the tour group. Once we did have armed officers board our tour bus for a routine check and asked to see American passports, but we had no issues other than that!

Watch my Israel + Jerusalem Mini Vlog .

Overall: Is a MSC Mediterranean Cruise a good cruise to book?

Absolutely! We had such a time on our MSC cruise and I would totally take another one. Here’s why I would recommend:

MSC Cruises are very affordable — typically less expensive than Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, etc. MSC also has some great cruise deals ! While it may not be the most luxurious ship, I still think it’s a great option! Plus their newer ships look amazing:

MSC offers so many different routes all over the world. Just in the Mediterranean alone they have multiple routes leaving from tons of different ports! Check out all the destinations here .

Skyline of the Old City at the Western Wall and Temple Mount in Jerusalem, Israel.

A visit to Israel — the “land of milk and honey” — is even more bountiful on a Holland America Line cruise. Calls in Ashdod and Haifa offer the chance to walk through Jerusalem’s Old City, paying homage at the Western Wall and Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum. Ashdod also provides access to UNESCO-designated Tel Aviv and the Dead Sea, while Haifa leads to Galilee and the Golan Heights. Take full advantage on an Israel overland adventure that combines Jerusalem with pilgrimages to Masada or Bethlehem.

10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Megan Guinnup is a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Windstar Cruises

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

Middle East latest: Israel admits 'mistake' - as close allies don't hold back in condemnation of strike on aid workers

Israel's military chief has said the bombing of a World Central Kitchen convoy, in which seven aid workers including three Britons were killed, was "a mistake that followed misidentification". Some of Israel's closest allies have condemned the strike.

Israel has promised a thorough, independent investigation into the strike that killed the seven aid workers but its credibility will lie in its transparency, says Sky's  Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall .

He said the investigation will be carried out by "an offshoot independent arm" to which the IDF refers instances needing investigation.

"It's within Israel and I think, for that reason, there will be a lot of people who just don't believe it."

He added: "Its credibility will probably lie in its transparency and what action is taken, and we'll see whether or not foreign governments have faith and trust in it, regardless of whether members of the public do."

But Bunkall said the "best gauge" of the investigation's credibility is how aid organisations react and whether they "have trust that things will have changed to allow them to go about their roles with some degree of safety.

"I say 'some degree' because it is a war zone and they are nasty places, but events like this shouldn't happen. Mistakes such as this should not happen, and it is in Israel's interests that aid organisations like World Central Kitchen and others continue to operate in Gaza and to deliver aid where it's most needed."

The family of James Kirby, one of the three Britons killed in the Israeli air strike on aid workers in Gaza, have described him as a "genuine gentleman".

"Alongside the other six individuals who tragically lost their lives, he will be remembered as a hero," they told the BBC.

"James understood the dangers of venturing into Gaza, drawing from his experiences in the British Armed Forces, where he bravely served tours in Bosnia and Afghanistan.

"Despite the risks, his compassionate nature drove him to offer assistance to those in dire need."

Mr Kirby's family said they were "incredibly proud of who James was and what he achieved".

According to his LinkedIn profile, Mr Kirby, 47,  was a former member of the British Armed Forces - The Times said he was also believed to have been in Britain's special forces, while the Telegraph reported he was a former Army rifleman and sniper marksman.

He described himself as someone who "maintains a calm demeanour under extreme pressure, including life-threatening situations" and said he was "experienced in working in varied theatres across the globe, both on land and at sea, including hostile and austere locations".

The aid workers killed in yesterday's Israeli strike were three Britons, a Pole, an Australian, a Canadian-US dual national and a Palestinian.

The three Britons - John Chapman, James Henderson and James Kirby - were military veterans providing security for the World Central Kitchen aid mission.

Mr Chapman and Mr Kirby were former Royal Marines and Mr Henderson was an army veteran.

They worked as private security contractors for UK-based firm Solace Global.

Mr Chapman, 57, was a married father of two who had only been in Gaza a few weeks, The Sun reported. There were no further details on Mr Kirby or Mr Henderson.

The families and friends of some of the other victims have been speaking to various news outlets around the world. Here is some of what they have said.

Lalzawmi "Zomi" Frankcom, 43, was the Australian killed in the strike.

She was born in Melbourne and worked for eight years at an Australian bank before moving into aid work with World Central Kitchen five years ago.

Her social media showed visits to help people in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Romania and Haiti.

One of her World Central Kitchen colleagues, Dora Weekly, remembered her being invited to walk a Hollywood red carpet for a documentary about the charity that had been nominated for an Emmy.

"I remember getting a picture of her in a dress, saying: 'Hold on to this forever'," she told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

"'Because usually I'm in sweats and runners, and I'm in Pakistan or Afghanistan' or, you know, she could be anywhere, and never with her hair done or makeup done.

"She worked all hours, she gave everything, and she believed in helping people who were less fortunate."

Damian Sobol was the 36-year-old Pole who died.

He had studied hospitality in the Polish city of Przemysl and had been on aid missions in Ukraine, Morocco, Turkey and - for the past six months - Gaza.

Marta Wilczynska, of the Free Place Foundation, which cooperates with World Central Kitchen, described him as a "really extraordinary guy".

Ms Wilczynska met Mr Sobol on the Polish side of the Ukrainian border just after Russia launched its invasion in February 2022.

She said he spoke English well, was a translator and a skilled manager who could organise work in any conditions.

"Always smiling, always so helpful, he loved this job. I felt I had a brother in him," she added.

Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, 27, was Palestinian and had worked for World Central Kitchen as a driver and translator since the beginning of the year, relatives said.

He had been a successful businessman who had conducted trades with Ukraine, Egypt, China and others, his brother Abdul Razzaq Abu Taha said.

His work made him known on the Israeli side, which helped in coordination and approval to assist the World Central Kitchen team in unloading the ship.

Mr Abu Taha had hoped to get married and his mother was looking for a wife for him, his brother said, adding: "He was supposed to get married if the war didn't happen."

Abdul said he had received a final call from Saifeddin just after the aid crew had unloaded their food in Gaza, telling him they had finished the job and he was heading home.

After the strike, Abdul had tried to call his brother but a stranger had picked up the phone, saying: "I found this phone about 200 metres away from the car. All of the people inside are killed."

Israel's military chief has said the strike that killed seven aid workers yesterday was "a mistake that followed misidentification" in complex conditions.

Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi was announcing preliminary findings in Israel's investigation into the strike.

He said: "It was a mistake that followed a misidentification - at night during a war in very complex conditions.

"It shouldn't have happened."

He said an independent body would conduct a "thorough investigation" that would be completed in the coming days, and said the army appreciates the "important work" of the World Central Kitchen.

The conclusions of the investigation will be implemented immediately and shared with WCK and other relevant organisations, he added.

"We see great importance in the continued delivery of humanitarian aid, and we will keep working to facilitate this vital effort," he said.

Yesterday, World Central Kitchen said it had coordinated with the Israeli military over the movement of its cars.

But three vehicles moving large distances apart were hit in succession and all three were badly damaged, indicating multiple targeted strikes.

Photos from the scene of the attack showed at least one of the vehicles had the charity's logo on its roof.

Poland's prime minister has said the attack that killed seven aid workers has put his country's solidarity with Israel to the test.

Israel has said the attack - which killed a Polish national, along with others including three Britons - was "unintended" but a number of its allies have voiced anger in response.

Donald Tusk's message on X was addressed to Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Israel's ambassador to Poland, Yacov Livne.

He said "the vast majority of Poles showed full solidarity with Israel after the Hamas attack".

"Today you are putting this solidarity to a really hard test.

"The tragic attack on volunteers and your reaction arouse understandable anger."

A Palestinian from northern Israel injured four police officers in a car-ramming attack and tried to stab security personnel at a checkpoint overnight, Israeli police have said.

The police officers were lightly wounded.

The 26-year-old Palestinian citizen of Israel was killed by police.

Palestinians are about 20% of Israel's population - they have citizenship and the right to vote but are widely discriminated against.

NHS staff are blockading the entrance to NHS England's headquarters in central London today, calling for the organisation's contract with Palantir to be cancelled.

Palantir was awarded a £330m contract late last year to create a new data management system, leading to privacy concerns around patients' medical details.

Campaigners say Palantir supplies technology to Israel's military and, earlier this month, NBC reported the company's chief executive Alex Karp as saying he had lost employees over his public support for Israel.

Mr Karp was quoted as saying that he was "exceedingly proud that after 7 October, within weeks, we are on the ground and we are involved in operationally crucial operations in Israel".

Palantir held its first board meeting of the year in Israel in January and, soon afterwards, it agreed to a "strategic partnership" with the Israeli Ministry of Defence to supply technology for the country's military efforts.

US officials have said they are watching closely to see if, as in the past, Iran-backed proxies attack US troops in the Middle East following an Israeli strike that Iran says hit its embassy compound.

Hossein Akbari, Tehran's ambassador to Damascus, promised the Iranian response to Sunday's strike - which Israel denies hit an embassy building - would be "harsh".

Two Iranian generals and five military advisers were killed.

US officials told Reuters they had not yet picked up intelligence suggesting Iran-backed groups were looking to attack US troops.

US deputy ambassador to the UN Robert Wood warned Tehran yesterday: "We will not hesitate to defend our personnel and repeat our prior warnings to Iran and its proxies not to take advantage of the situation... to resume their attacks on US personnel."

One source said Iran faced the conundrum of wanting to respond to deter further strikes while avoiding an all-out war.

"They are trying to modulate their actions in a way that shows that they are responsive but not escalatory.

"If they don't respond in this case, it really would be a signal that their deterrence is a paper tiger."

The official said given the significance of the Israeli strike, Iran may be forced to respond by attacking Israeli interests rather than going after US troops.

Some of Israel's closest allies have condemned the deaths of seven aid worker killed by airstrikes in Gaza on Monday.

Three Britons were among the World Central Kitchen volunteers, alongside Polish and Australia nationals, a Canadian-American dual national and a Palestinian.

Canada and other nations' embassies will present a joint formal diplomatic rebuke to the Israeli foreign ministry over the killings, a senior Canadian government official said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was "outraged" by the tragedy and expressed his "anger and concern" to Benjamin Netanyahu.

This comes after Rishi Sunak told the Israeli prime minister he was "appalled" by the attack and demanded a transparent investigation.

The seven deaths were "the inevitable result of the way this war is currently being conducted" and demonstrated "a disregard for international humanitarian law", said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

Joe Biden said the deaths were tragic and Israel was not doing enough to protect civilians.

"The United States has repeatedly urged Israel to deconflict their military operations against Hamas with humanitarian operations," he said.

Israel's military chief, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, said the strike was "a mistake that followed a misidentification – at night during a war in very complex conditions", while Mr Netanyahu admitted it was an "unintended strike... on innocent people".

Welcome back to our live coverage of the conflict, after three British aid workers were killed in Gaza in an airstrike Israel called a "grave mistake".

John Chapman, James Kirby and James Henderson were among seven volunteers from World Central Kitchen who died after a convoy they were travelling in was hit.

Israel Defence Forces said the strike did not intend to target aid workers, and an investigation into the incident will be completed in the coming days.

Before we resume our updates and analysis, here is a recap of some of the other key developments over the last 24 hours:

  • Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel "deeply regrets" the airstrike that killed seven aid workers, including three Britons;
  • Ships turned back from Gaza with 240 tonnes of undelivered aid following the strike;
  • The UK Foreign Office summoned the Israeli ambassador;
  • Former prime minister of Israel Ehud Olmert said Mr Netanyahu should be "removed immediately";
  • The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned an attack on Iran's diplomatic premises in Damascus, calling on "all concerned to exercise utmost restraint and avoid further escalation".

‘A Lot of Chaos’: Bridge Collapse Creates Upheaval at Largest U.S. Port for Car Trade

A bridge collapse closed Baltimore’s port, an important trade hub that ranks first in the nation by the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles.

Shipping in the Port of Baltimore

Monthly cargo handled by the Port of Baltimore

Peter Eavis

By Peter Eavis and Jenny Gross

  • March 26, 2024

The Baltimore bridge disaster on Tuesday upended operations at one of the nation’s busiest ports, with disruptions likely to be felt for weeks by companies shipping goods in and out of the country — and possibly by consumers as well.

The upheaval will be especially notable for auto makers and coal producers for whom Baltimore has become one of the most vital shipping destinations in the United States.

As officials began to investigate why a nearly 1,000-foot cargo ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the middle of the night, companies that transport goods to suppliers and stores scrambled to get trucks to the other East Coast ports receiving goods diverted from Baltimore. Ships sat idle elsewhere, unsure where and when to dock.

“It’s going to cause a lot of chaos,” said Paul Brashier, vice president for drayage and intermodal at ITS Logistics.

The closure of the Port of Baltimore is the latest hit to global supply chains, which have been strained by monthslong crises at the Panama Canal, which has had to slash traffic because of low water levels; and the Suez Canal, which shipping companies are avoiding because of attacks by the Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea.

The auto industry now faces new supply headaches.

Last year, 570,000 vehicles were imported through Baltimore, according to Sina Golara, an assistant professor of supply chain management at Georgia State University. “That’s a huge amount,” he said, equivalent to nearly a quarter of the current inventory of new cars in the United States.

The Baltimore port handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year, and it was the 17th biggest port in the nation overall in 2021, ranked by total tons, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Baltimore Ranks in the Top 20 U.S. Ports

Total trade in 2021 in millions of tons

Baltimore ranks first in the United States for the volume of automobiles and light trucks it handles, and for vessels that carry wheeled cargo, including farm and construction machinery, according to a statement by Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland last month.

The incident is another stark reminder of the vulnerability of the supply chains that transport consumer products and commodities around the world.

The extent of the disruption depends on how long it takes to reopen shipping channels into the port of Baltimore. Experts estimate it could take several weeks.

Baltimore is not a leading port for container ships, and other ports can likely absorb traffic that was headed to Baltimore, industry officials said.

Stephen Edwards, the chief executive of the Port of Virginia, said it was expecting a vessel on Tuesday that was previously bound for Baltimore, and that others would soon follow. “Between New York and Virginia, we have sufficient capacity to handle all this cargo,” Mr. Edwards said, referring to container ships.

“Shipping companies are very agile,” said Jean-Paul Rodrigue, a professor in the department of maritime business administration at Texas A&M University-Galveston. “In two to three days, it will be rerouted.”

But other types of cargo could remain snarled.

Alexis Ellender, a global analyst at Kpler, a commodities analytics firm, said he expected the port closure to cause significant disruption of U.S. exports of coal. Last year, about 23 million metric tons of coal exports were shipped from the port of Baltimore, about a quarter of all seaborne U.S. coal shipments. About 12 vessel had been expected to leave the port of Baltimore in the next week or so carrying coal, according to Kpler.

He noted that it would not make a huge dent on the global market, but he added that “the impact is significant for the U.S. in terms of loss of export capacity.”

“You may see coal cargoes coming from the mines being rerouted to other ports instead,” he said, with a port in Norfolk, Va., the most likely.

If auto imports are reduced by Baltimore’s closure, inventories could run low, particularly for models that are in high demand.

“We are initiating discussions with our various transportation providers on contingency plans to ensure an uninterrupted flow of vehicles to our customers and will continue to carefully monitor this situation,” Stellantis, which owns Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, said in a statement.

Other ports have the capacity to import cars, but there may not be enough car transporters at those ports to handle the new traffic.

“You have to make sure the capacity exists all the way in the supply chain — all the way to the dealership,” said Mr. Golara, the Georgia State professor.

A looming battle is insurance payouts, once legal liability is determined. The size of the payout from the insurer is likely to be significant and will depend on factors including the value of the bridge, the scale of loss of life compensation owed to families of people who died, the damage to the vessel and disruption to the port.

The ship’s insurer, Britannia P&I Club, part of a global group of insurers, said in a statement that it was “working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally.”

The port has also increasingly catered to large container ships like the Dali, the 948-foot-long cargo vessel carrying goods for the shipping giant Maersk that hit a pillar of the bridge around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Dali had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off toward the 1.6-mile Francis Scott Key Bridge.

State-owned terminals, managed by the Maryland Port Administration, and privately owned terminals in Baltimore transported a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo in 2023, worth $80 billion.

Materials transported in large volumes through the city’s port include coal, coffee and sugar. It was the ninth-busiest port in the nation last year for receiving foreign cargo, in terms of volume and value.

The bridge’s collapse will also disrupt cruises traveling in and out of Baltimore. Norwegian Cruise Line last year began a new fall and winter schedule calling at the Port of Baltimore.

An earlier version of this article misstated the Port of Baltimore’s rank among U.S. ports. It was the nation’s 17th biggest port by total tons in 2021, not the 20th largest.

The entire vacation package costs $4,851.45 when booked through Costco Travel. When booking the same room and dates directly through the Hyatt Regency's website, the hotel reservation costs $5,331.78 — without airfare to Maui or a rental car.
