Can Tom Cruise get audiences to care about Mission: Impossible 8?
The underwhelming box office of the seventh instalment has now been followed by a year-long delay for the next chapter
S ince 1996, the Mission: Impossible franchise has put Tom Cruise through the wringer. He’s scaled skyscrapers. He’s leapt out of planes. He’s broken bones. He did whatever the hell it was that Mission: Impossible II was about. And yet, despite this pathological desire to risk life and limb in the pursuit of mass entertainment, it’s starting to look like Cruise’s most difficult job yet will be to get anyone to see Mission: Impossible 8.
The most recent Mission: Impossible film, this summer’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , did not exactly proceed as anticipated. The movie was initially slated for release in 2021, only for Covid to shut down production twice. And then, when it did eventually make it to screen, people stayed away in bafflingly large numbers. Despite being a critically acclaimed orgy of giddy set pieces, the film struggled at the box office. As things stand, Dead Reckoning Part One is the second lowest-grossing entry in the franchise after 2006’s Mission: Impossible III, earning almost $50m less than 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout. All in all, Paramount looks set to lose about $100m on the film .
And now, to make matters worse, the next one is going to be delayed as well . Although the plan was to release it one year after Part One, the effects of the Sag-Aftra strike have caused Paramount to shunt the film back. It will now be released on 23 May 2025. That is unless anything else goes wrong before that, which at this rate almost certainly will.
The task now facing Mission: Impossible 8 is, well, extremely difficult. Dead Reckoning Part Two isn’t just a normal M:I film, but a direct sequel that was made in the retrospectively wrongheaded belief that everyone would go bananas over its predecessor. And even the few people who did see that film will have waited so long for its sequel that they will have probably forgotten what actually happened in it. Not to be a downer, but at this rate you shouldn’t be surprised if Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two ends up making even less money than Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One .
So now the question is what Mission: Impossible can do to reverse its fading fortunes? Obviously, my suggestion would be to do nothing at all. For those who saw it, Dead Reckoning Part One was likely to be one of the most intense cinematic experiences of their lives. It’s a relentless pounding of a film that exists purely to give a modern action audience what it wants in greater quantities than it can possibly handle. It is a magnificent film – one of the best in the series, even – and I would argue that its failure is more a symptom of the death of theatrical cinema than a rebuke against the quality of the film itself. My advice would always be for the franchise to keep doing exactly what it’s been doing, in the knowledge that its long-term legacy will outweigh contemporary gripes.
But I said that when it came out, and everyone stayed at home anyway, so it just goes to show what I know. So maybe Mission: Impossible does need to course-correct a little to remind audiences what they’re missing. We could, of course, start with the obvious. Saying (and typing) “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” is an almighty pain in the bum, and the title hints at the sort of bloat that is bound to affect an almost 30-year-old franchise. Maybe for the next one, just give it a one-word subtitle. Mission: Impossible – Pow, maybe, or Mission: Impossible – Oi.
Also, as much as that video of Tom Cruise jumping off a motorbike on a mountain cheered us all up in the depths of Covid, there might also be a lesson to learn here. Why on earth would any film choose to lead with repeated shots of the film’s biggest stunt being executed? By the time the actual film came out, everyone assumed that they’d already seen the best bit for free on YouTube. Next time, Mission: Impossible should try saving some excitement for the actual film.
Next we should probably look at the films that actually did make money this summer. M:I was far from alone in underperforming, with fellow presumed dead certs like Indiana Jones and The Flash also tanking. The two big shining lights of the summer were Barbie and Oppenheimer. Were they perfect films? No. But they got audiences hyped up beyond all recognition anyway. The day that Barbie came out, for instance, my local cinema was decked out in bright pink, with many of the staff coming to work dressed in Barbie costumes. Is that something that Mission: Impossible could attempt? Would the promise of being shown to your seats by someone dressed as Simon Pegg be enough to turn things around? Actually, probably not.
In the end, Hollywood is an industry ruled by the bottom line. And if the Mission: Impossible films are going to make money again, this can only mean one thing: they need to become a lot cheaper, and fast. There are ways to scrape away at the edges of the budget, of course. They could make the next one in fewer locations, and pare down the cast to its bare bones. But the big money-suck on the Mission: Impossible films are the stunts. I hate to say it, but these might need to be trimmed back. This isn’t the end of the world, though. I firmly believe that you could centre a very good Mission: Impossible movie around a sequence where Tom Cruise gets pushed down a concrete staircase in a shopping trolley. If anyone needs me to write it, I’m right here.

Tom cruise hangs on for dear life to his 'mission' to save the movies.
Justin Chang
Tom Cruise is back, and doing his own stunts, in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One. Paramount Pictures and Skydance hide caption
Tom Cruise is back, and doing his own stunts, in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.
For some time now, Tom Cruise has been on what feels like a one-man mission to save the movies. Back in 2020, when Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One was shooting in the U.K., Cruise was recorded screaming at crew members who'd violated COVID-19 lockdown protocols, all but claiming that the industry's future rested on their shoulders. Earlier this year, Steven Spielberg publicly praised Cruise for saving Hollywood with the smash success of Top Gun: Maverick .
Now, with the box office still struggling to return to pre-pandemic levels, Cruise has become a kind of evangelist for the theatergoing experience, urging audiences to buy tickets not just to his movie, but also to other big summer titles like Barbie and Oppenheimer .
Pop Culture Happy Hour
'mission: impossible' is back, but will you accept it, or will it self-destruct.
Cruise's save-the-movies spirit goes hand-in-hand with his self-styled reputation as the last of the great Hollywood stars. In this seventh Mission: Impossible movie, the now 61-year-old actor and producer still insists on risking life and limb for our viewing pleasure, doing his own outrageous stunts in action scenes that make only minimal use of CGI. And so we see Cruise's Ethan Hunt, an agent with the Impossible Missions Force, or IMF, tearing up the streets of Rome in a tiny yellow Fiat, riding a motorcycle off a cliff and — in the most astonishing sequence — hanging on for dear life after a deadly train derailment.
The plot that connects these sequences is preposterous, of course, but reasonably easy to follow. In an especially timely twist, the big villain this time around is AI — a self-aware techno-being referred to as the Entity. It's an invisible menace, everywhere and nowhere; it can wipe out data systems, control the flow of information and bring nations to their knees.
'Top Gun: Maverick' is ridiculous. It's also ridiculously entertaining
Hunt and his IMF team are determined to destroy the Entity before it becomes too powerful or falls into the wrong hands. But his old boss, Eugene Kittridge, played by the sinister Henry Czerny, warns Hunt to fall in line with the U.S. government, which wants to control the Entity and the new world order to come.
This is notably the first time we've seen Kittridge since Brian De Palma 's 1996 Mission: Impossible — the first and still, to my mind, the best movie in the series. That said, the director and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie has done a snazzy job with the most recent ones: Rogue Nation , Fallout and now Dead Reckoning Part One .
Coronavirus Updates
Sorry, tom cruise fans — new 'top gun' and 'mission impossible' movies delayed again.
Here, he seems to be paying sly tribute to that 1996 original, even evoking its horrific early setpiece in which Hunt watched helplessly as his IMF teammates were murdered, one by one. That trauma was formative; it explains why, in movie after movie, Hunt has repeatedly put his life on the line for his friends.
If you're kept up with the series, you'll recognize those friends here, including Hunt's fellow operatives played by Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Rebecca Ferguson. You may also remember Vanessa Kirby , reprising her Fallout role as a ruthless arms broker and giving, in a single sequence, perhaps the movie's best performance. There are some intriguing new characters, too, including a wily thief, well played by Hayley Atwell, who draws Hunt into an extended game of cat-and-mouse. Pom Klementieff steals a few scenes as a mysterious assassin, as does Esai Morales as a glowering enemy from Hunt's past.
That's a lot of characters, double-crosses, chases, fights, escapes and explosions to keep track of. But even with a running time that pushes north of two-and-a-half hours — and this is just Part One — the movie never loses its grip. McQuarrie, a screenwriter first and foremost, paces the narrative beautifully, building and releasing tension at regular intervals.
Compared with the visual effects-heavy bombast of most Hollywood blockbusters, Dead Reckoning Part One feels like a marvel of old-school craftsmanship, just with niftier gadgets. Even Hunt wears his devil-may-care recklessness with surprising lightness and grace, spending much of the movie's third act on the sidelines and even playing some of his most daring escapades for laughs. Not that the actor doesn't take his mission seriously. I don't know if Tom Cruise can save the movies, but somehow, I never get tired of watching him try.
Tom Cruise working on three new movies with Mission: Impossible 7 director — including a musical
Cruise has his plate full following his blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick
We now have a pretty good idea of how Tom Cruise plans to follow up Top Gun: Maverick , beyond Mission: Impossible 7 and 8.
In an exclusive report, Deadline is stating that Cruise and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Parts One and Two director Christopher McQuarrie will be partnering up for a further three unannounced movies. These projects are pretty broad in scope, though the initial highlight is Cruise’s desire to follow up Rock of Ages with an original musical.
Of course, these projects will now go to the back of an already packed calendar for this summer’s biggest star. Cruise already has Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two coming out in each of the next two summers. Aka get ready for Cruise to take the title of summer blockbuster king for three years in a row.
Tom Cruise's three big new projects
Yes, Cruise is in fact working on a musical, or he is if Deadline’s reporting is to be believed. Cruise and McQuarrie are planning to develop an original song and dance-style musical. That means new IP, so there shouldn’t be any worries about a potential Top Gun: The Musical hitting the silver screen any time soon.
Not that Cruise doesn’t have the skills to lead in a musical. The actor trained successfully to be able to sing like a rock musician for Rock of Ages, so the expectations for this project shouldn’t be low. Plus, if Risky Business was any indication, we know he can dance.
The other two projects that are now rumored to be in the works are (shocker) another original action film with franchise potential to go along with Cruise’s other two action franchises, and a space-based film directed by Doug Liman, with McQuarrie producing. NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX are going to be assisting, and it looks like Cruise's next project.
There's also talk of a potential Tropic Thunder spinoff, but it may be one of the other projects. In Tropic Thunder, a comedy starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black, Cruise played Les Grossman, a producer with a penchant for dancing a bit and cursing — a lot. Cruise has been rumored to have been working on this project in the past, with Entertainment Weekly reporting on a potential movie as far back as 2010. As Deadline notes "It’s unclear if they will create a whole movie around Grossman, or borrow him for inclusion in either of the other vehicles." Either way, they want to revive the character.
What other movies is Tom Cruise working on?
Cruise should be able to quickly capitalize on the success of Top Gun: Maverick. Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One is slated for a July 14, 2023 release and is already in post-production. The follow-up, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two is currently filming in the U.K. and will come out a year later.
Cruise was recently spotted filming “speed flying” for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two. This is expected to be a new stunt to make all previous Tom Cruise stunts — well, they’ll still probably look awesome, but this one is supposed to be even crazier.
Deadline says that Universal is signed on to be the studio for the space-based project, which could end up being the most ambitious of Cruise’s career.

Tom Cruise Says Press Tours Are His Time Off From Work: ‘I Don’t Have Days Off’

Most people can’t wait to take a day off work. Tom Cruise isn’t most people.
The actor recently told Bella magazine (via Uproxx ) while on his “ Top Gun: Maverick ” press tour that he never takes a day off work, which somehow makes sense considering he’s often always filming a movie, promoting a movie or prepping for a movie. The way Cruise sees it, heading out on a press tour for one of his films is his time off.
“This is a day off for me, because I am not shooting!” Cruise said when asked how he spends his time off from work. “I’m just chillin’ now. I don’t have days off. Look, I’m fortunate, I’m lucky. I’ve spent my life on movie sets and traveling the world, which is what I always wanted to do. So this is not work – I’m living the dream.”
Cruise has been jet-setting around the world this month promoting “Top Gun: Maverick,” which has earned critical acclaim. The actor attended the Cannes Film Festival, where the action sequel got a five-minute standing ovation , before flying over to London and then Tokyo for more of the film’s international premieres.
“Top Gun: Maverick” is set 30 years after the 1986 original. Cruise reprises his role of test pilot Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who is now put in charge of training a group of younger Top Gun graduates. Teller stars as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, a pilot trainee who is the son of Maverick’s late best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.
Reviews for “Top Gun: Maverick” have been stellar across the board. Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge named the film a Critic’s Pick and a “stunning sequel” in his review. The film has garnered attention for its spectacular aerial sequences, which contain many shots that do not rely on digital effects.
“These days, videogame-styled blockbusters rely so heavily on CGI that it’s thrilling to see the impact of gravity on actual human beings, pancaked to their chairs by multiple G-forces,” Debruge writes in the review. “Sophisticated movie magic makes their performances seamless with the exterior airborne shots, while the commitment to filming practically everything practically feels like the cutting-edge equivalent of Howard Hughes’ history-making ‘Hell’s Angels.’ The result is the most immersive flight simulator audiences will have ever experienced, right down to the great Dolby roar of engines vibrating through their seats.”
“Top Gun: Maverick” opens in U.S. theaters on May 27 from Paramount Pictures.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike has been going for over 130 days . Joined by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), Hollywood writers are protesting several issues.
Among other demands, the WGA is calling for explicit regulations on the use of AI in media production, in what Time Magazine called “ a pivotal moment ” in film history.
Enter Tom Cruise and cue the Mission: Impossible theme music .
Although Barbie and Oppenheimer received most attention this summer, Tom Cruise’s latest instalment in the Mission: Impossible series ( Dead Reckoning Part One ), reveals more about the future of movies.
Highlights threat from AI
Eerily prescient to the Hollywood strikes, yet begun well before the strike in 2020, this blockbuster explores AI threats to human society and our political order .
Cruise’s nemesis is an AI program called the Entity. Created as a cyberweapon, the Entity achieves sentience to become both agent and object in the ensuing global competition for power.
With computational omniscience in a digitally networked and reliant world, the Entity can manipulate digital and physical infrastructure, such as mobile phones and transit systems, and thus also control the humans who rely on digital interfaces.
Recognizing the Entity as a fundamental threat to humanity, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) of the Impossible Missions Force goes rogue (again) to acquire and destroy the AI.
Immersive experience
The film’s plot is a vivid reminder of how little agency humans have in digital environments, even as the cinematic environment relies on contemporary technologies to immerse its audience.
Like Cruise’s previous summer 2022 blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick , Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning is designed to be cinema as experience more than story, using drone cinematography and sophisticated sound editing.
Director Christopher McQuarrie explained his approach as dedicated to “a fully immersive big screen experience,” including high-definition video and sound technologies that allow editors to create the sensation of sound in the audience’s physical environment.
Human acting, star power
As a Hollywood movie star, Cruise is similarly devoted to creating visceral audience experiences.
Even as computer-generated imagery (CGI) and digital effects have overtaken big-budget films, Cruise insists on doing all of his own stunts . He explicitly compared his approach to classic film performances, saying: “No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance? Why do you do your own dancing?”
Clips of his riding a motorcycle off a cliff circulated online six months before the film released.
When Mission: Impossible was released in July 2023 Cruise surprised fans at global premieres, spending time on the red carpet meeting and talking with them .
His dedication to in-person presence recalls an earlier era of Hollywood, when movie stars could not rely on social media to connect with their fans. Despite his public support for the strike, he also advocated for exemptions to allow actors to promote their films .
No digital de-aging
Unsurprisingly, McQuarrie decided against using a digitally de-aged Cruise , instead focusing attention on the physical fitness of a movie star who appears far younger than his 61 years.
All of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning recalls earlier eras of cinema. The film’s title is taken, at least in part, from the 1947 film with Humphrey Bogart .
References to the six previous Mission: Impossible films abound, including the return of Canadian actor, Henry Czerny as Kittridge , Hunt’s adversary from the franchise’s first film in 1996 .
The early desert sequence recalls big-screen desert epics like Lawrence of Arabia (1962), while the submarine introduction to the Entity’s power echoes The Hunt for Red October (1990), among others.
Classic car, train chases
A 20-minute car chase through the streets of Rome features an imperilled baby carriage on steps, a reference to the same scenario in director Sergei Eisenstein’s influential Battleship Potemkin from 1925.
Cruise is handcuffed to costar Hayley Atwell, a trick used in various films, including the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), while driving a small yellow Fiat, reminiscent of both The Italian Job (1965) and The Bourne Identity (2002).
There’s even an extended sequence where Hunt battles enemies on top of and throughout the Orient Express train, evoking everything from the films based on Agatha Christie’s novel, to Buster Keaton’s The General (1926), to yet another James Bond film, From Russia with Love (1963), whose plot hinged on the threat of misused cybertechnology.
The numerous cinematic references are to films that predate the era of streaming and social media.
Physical presence: a luxury?
Writers and actors are right to be worried. With so many processes in commercial media already routinized, the industry appears particularly vulnerable to generative AI.
The current circumstances recall earlier transitions such as the effect when films introduced sound technologies, a threat to silent-film actors dramatized in the Gene Kelly film, Singin’ in the Rain . More recently, movie theatres moved from celluloid to digital projection, largely eliminating projectionists.
Overt resistance to new technologies is rarely successful in the long term. Business professor and pundit Scott Galloway has compared the writers’ strike to the 1980s National Union of Mineworkers strike in Northern England.
With so much digital content available, physical presence and proximity becomes rarer and therefore more of a luxury item.
Return to live experiences
Certainly, audiences have returned robustly to live music concerts. (Just try getting a Taylor Swift ticket in Toronto .)
For now, we will all have to wait and see how it ends for cinema and those who make it. Part two of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning isn’t due out until next summer.
Hopefully, it will be a Hollywood ending for all of us.

Tom Cruise calls it quits with Russian socialite girlfriend Elsina Khayrova after meeting kids
The tom cruise break-up news follows despite his relationship seemingly going strong with now ex-elsina khayrova..
It may have seemed as if Tom Cruise and Elsina Khayrova were going strong, especially after their London appearance earlier this month. However, their relationship reportedly “ran its course”, as a source told The Sun US.
Following a series of dates in February, the 61-year-old Mission Impossible star and his 36-year-old Russian socialite ex-girlfriend have amicably parted ways since they live in the same block in London. The pair also attended a London gala dinner to support the Air Ambulance Charity but reached the venue separately.
Tom Cruise and Elsina Khayrova break up
The anonymous source told The Sun that ending things on a bad note “would have been awkward if they'd bumped into each other in the lift”. With no hard feelings between them, the relationship “simply ran its course”.

Page Six reported that Cruise met with Khayrova's children earlier this week. She has a son and daughter from her former marriage to Russian oligarch Dimitry Tsvetkov. Elsina and Tsvetkov called it quits in 2021 after disputing over their property. Tsvetkov told the Daily Mail that the divorce cost him £150 million ($188 million),
How Tom Cruise met Elsina Khayrova
Despite the Top Gun actor's relationship appearing to take the steady route with Elsina and them being “very close” to each other (Daily Mail), things have taken a different turn altogether. Cruise had supposedly met Khayrova, who's reportedly a Putin-allied politician's daughter, through her friend. They were introduced at one of Tom's exclusive Sunday tea parties in his London penthouse. Several sources claim that the couple has been dating since December.
Tom Cruise also has three children from his past marriages. Daughter Isabella and son Connor were adopted in 1992 and 1995, respectively. He shares them with ex Nicole Kidman . On the other hand, he has a 17-year-old daughter, Suri, with Katie Holmes .

Hayley Atwell Breaks Silence On Tom Cruise Dating Rumors During ‘Mission: Impossible’ Interview
Hayley Atwell revealed that Tom Cruise gave her advice on how to navigate the rumors that the 'Mission: Impossible 7' co-stars are dating.
Hayley Atwell , 41, finally addressed the rumors that she’s dating Tom Cruise , 61. After the two actors were romantically linked when they were filming Mission: Impossible 7 in 2020, Hayley set the record straight about their relationship in a July 8 interview with The Independent . Hayley confirmed they aren’t dating and said that she looks at Tom as an “uncle”. “I would be like, ‘Ooh, there’s some weird rumors, and it feels base, it feels a little dirty, it feels grubby, it’s not what I’m about,'” she said in the interview. “Why are things being assumed or projected onto me about my relationship with my work colleague and boss?”
Hayley said that the rumors about her and Tom were “upsetting” to her because “it’s involving people in my actual life, my personal life, who have to be on the receiving end of that. It becomes invasive.” The Captain America: The First Avenger star also revealed that she got advice from Tom on how to handle the speculation about their connection . “When I’ve talked to him about it, he’d be like, ‘You know exactly who you are. You know what you’re about. And that is the only thing that matters. It doesn’t matter what people think of you, if you are in integrity with yourself, if you know what your value system is,’ ” she said.
Ahead of their movie’s July 12 theatrical release , Hayley praised Tom and pushed back against any of the criticism about the Oscar nominee. “I truly feel you could meet him and go, ‘He’s nice; he’s charming; he’s charismatic; he knows how to make people feel good about themselves. So that’s just a tactic for total manipulation, because he’s probably just an egocentric.’ Or whatever bulls*** people want to make up about people,” Hayley said. “But over time, you’re just watching him, going: he really works hard, he really cares, he’s really interested in people and wants to engage with them, and he believes in the power of cinema as much as he did when he was five years old.” Hayley also said that Tom made her feel “safe” on the set of Mission: Impossible 7 .
When Hayley and Tom were filming their action movie in 2020, it was rumored that they were dating , but they never confirmed the relationship themselves. In June 2022, news of their split was reported and Hayley started dating actor and music producer Ned Wolfgang Kelly . She got engaged to Ned in April 2023. Hayley and Tom had a friendly reunion at the Mission: Impossible 7 premiere in Dubai on June 26. The co-stars shared a hug and Tom leaned in to give Hayley a kiss on the cheek, proving they’ve stayed friendly amidst the rumors about their relationship.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s daughter, Suri Cruise, was seen going on a walk by herself in New York City on Monday.
Suri was photographed looking down at her phone while giving a soft smile as she confidently went on the solo stroll.
The 17-year-old held her phone with both of her hands but also managed to grip onto a bag of Trader Joe’s milk chocolate covered peanut butter pretzels.
Suri showed off her fashionista side in a white midi dress with pink flowers all over, criss-crossed black tights and a long denim jacket with a white fuzzy collar.
She accessorized her look with black sneakers and a black messenger bag that she slung around her shoulder and laid on her side.
The “Dawson’s Creek” alum’s mini-me daughter loosely pulled back her brown locks but let a few pieces of her curtain bangs free to frame her face.

Suri has been spotted walking out and about the Big Apple several times , but she’s rarely been photographed without her mom.
Most recently, Katie, 45, and Suri –– who have a remarkably similar resemblance –– stepped out together for a stroll through Soho last month.
Suri has grown up in the spotlight, but she’s also been finding her own path.
Page Six recently reported that the teenager starred in her high school play, “The Addams Family: A New Musical,” in December 2023.
“She was amazing,” one attendee told us at the time.

Suri reportedly didn’t mention either of her parent’s names in the bio for her role.
The high school senior has always appeared close with her mother, but she’s reportedly been estranged from her father , 61, since their divorce in 2012.
The “Top Gun” actor and the “Batman Begins” actress got married in 2006, but Holmes filed for divorce in 2012 and got custody of their daughter.
Cruise was most recently romantically linked to British socialite Elsina Khayrova , but a source told Page Six that he “cooled things down” a few weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Holmes appears to be single since splitting with Bobby Wooten III after eight months of dating in December 2022.

Tom Cruise Has Reportedly Quit Scientology After It Kept Him From Seeing His Daughter Suri For Years
- Tom Cruise has reportedly distanced himself from the Church of Scientology, possibly ending his long-standing affiliation with the controversial religion.
- The Church of Scientology has played a significant role in Tom Cruise's personal life, including his divorces and his relationship with his daughter Suri.
- While Tom's two eldest children remain devoted members of the Church, his rumored departure may strain relationships within his family.
Tom Cruise has been a high-profile member of the Church of Scientology for decades, and his eldest two kids have also become active members. But Tom has reportedly quit the church after allowing it to control his life for years.
As per The Mirror , Tom has been primarily in the UK the last three years filming his latest movies. While he’s been photographed around places like Birmingham and Cotswolds, it’s reported that he’s stopped visiting the UK Scientology headquarters. He also hasn’t been pictured at the Church of Scientology building in central London.
This is fuelling speculation that the actor is distancing himself from Scientology. Reports of this first began in 2021, when Tom was apparently having a “religious crisis.”

Tom Doesn’t Have A Relationship With Suri Because Of Scientology
Tom hasn’t responded to the speculation thus far, but it’s shocking when considering how involved the Church has been in his personal life. Scientology allegedly played a role in his divorces from Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes , and it’s highly speculated that it’s also kept him away from his and Katie’s daughter, Suri, 17.
Katie filed for divorce from Tom in 2012 after 7 years of marriage and it was finalized within a matter of weeks. Katie got a generous settlement --- $400,000 a month until Suri turns 18 —and, more importantly, sole custody of their daughter.
Reports said the divorce was fuelled by Katie’s desire to escape Scientology’s influence on her family (and the pressure to convert). She enrolled Suri in a Catholic school shortly after the split.

With Tom agreeing to give Katie full custody, it appears he also agreed to not have contact with Suri while she’s a minor, likely due to his and Katie’s conflict about Scientology.
But now with reports that Tom is leaving the Church, perhaps he’ll try rekindling a relationship with Suri, even though it’s apparently been a decade since he last saw her .
Tom’s Oldest Daughter Is A High-Ranking Church Member
While Tom may be quitting Scientology, his two eldest children remain heavily involved in the religion. In 2019, his daughter Isabella reveals she was promoted to being an auditor , the person who questions other Scientologists about their personal live. In a promotional video, she says the religion saved her life.
“It’s a few meltdowns and running to the bathroom to have a mini episode, but it is worth everything because you will get through,” Isabella explained. “This is a gift to yourself and so many others. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t going to be an auditor or aren’t going to join staff. If you are going to make it as a being for the long run you NEED this. That’s the truth… so stop messing around and get going.”
Tom’s oldest kids lived with him following his divorce from their mother, Nicole Kidman, explaining their entrenchment in the Scientology faith. But if Tom truly is walking away from the controversial religion, it could put a divide In between their relationship, though it could improve things between him and Suri.
Angus bull named Tom Cruise smashes Victorian sale record
A Victorian bull called Tom Cruise has been sold for $230,000, smashing the state record.
The bull was sold at Banquet Angus's sale this week at Mortlake, breaking the previous record set by Te Mania Angus for a bull that sold for $130,000 in 2022.
Hamish Branson from Banquet Angus said they identified last year the bull was "pretty special, so he needed a special name".
"He kind of came across as a bit of a Tom Cruise," Mr Banson said.
"It's just a simple, easy name and very catchy."
According to Mr Branson, Hollywood looks had little to do with the record price but rather the bull had a good pedigree with his father, Rambo, well known.
Plus the bull has exceptional estimated breeding values (EBV), which are measurements of an animal's genetic potential, and rates a bull's breeding merit for specific traits such as potential birth weight, meat carcase weight, and quality of progeny.
Prices bounce back
It's a massive return to high prices for the stud beef industry after a disappointing 2023 due to low cattle prices.
"Last year was a difficult time for all of us, but the prices have turned around quite quickly," Mr Branson said.
He said alongside their record-breaking bull, several of their bulls at their annual sale sold for more than $40,000 and a commercial buyer paid $34,000 for another bull in the auction.
The buyer of Tom Cruise was Keith Kerridge from Bannaby Angus, in the New South Wales Southern Highlands.
He said the bull had a great lineage but also some excellent EBVs, which led them to make the record-breaking bid.
"Looking back you think, gee whiz, we paid a lot of money for him," Mr Kerridge said.
"But at the end of the day, if you want to really improve your herd, you just have to pay up.
"But I feel good about it, it's a good marketing tool."
Mr Kerridge said Tom Cruise will be put straight to work, and semen collection will start as soon as he gets settled into his new home.
Australia's highest-priced bull, an Angus named Texas Thunderstruck T383, was sold in northern New South Wales for $360,000, while a Wagyu heifer still holds the record for Australia's most expensive beef animal fetching $400,000 in April 2022.
