While we all are familiar with Republic Day being celebrated on January 26, the previous day, January 25, is dedicated to an aspect that is very important, especially for our economy.

Every year, January 25 is observed as National Tourism Day in the country. Owing to the diversity and the multiculturism India has to offer, this day is to highlight the importance of tourism having a positive impact on the country's economy.

National Tourism Day History

It is not known when exactly this day came about. However, in 1948, a Tourist Traffic Committee was formed to promote tourism. The first regional offices of the same were established in Delhi and Mumbai. Three years later, in 1951, more offices were added in Kolkata and Chennai.

A department specifically pertaining to tourism was established in 1958 under the Ministry of Tourism and Communication that was headed by the Deputy General in the rank of Joint Secretary.

National Tourism Day Significance

The day's importance is plain and simple. It is to highlight the prominence of tourism in the country and how it impacts India's economic prospects. Each and every region in the country has a rich history attached to it that is commemorated in various ways. Tourism is the best way to highlight it all. Along with this, people are educated about the role it plays in the country as well.

National Tourism Day Theme

This year, the theme of National Tourism Day is 'Dekho Apna Desh'. Owing to the deadly coronavirus, tourism was deeply impacted by the lockdown that was put in the country to curb COVID-19's rampant spread. This time, this day will be observed virtually. From January 21 to February 22, the Ministry of Tourism has been organizing seminars pertaining to the theme. With that, they want to showcase the diverse culture of our country.

On this day, here's hoping that this year we all get to travel a bit around the country as well. Happy National Tourism Day!

Investing in People, Planet, and Prosperity

The overall disruption in the tourism sector brought about by COVID-19, provides an opportunity to redefine and recalibrate the direction and narratives of tourism investments for a more sustainable future for the People, the Planet, and prosperity.

This  World Tourism Day 2023 , the  UNWTO ,  under the theme “Tourism and green investment” highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for the  Sustainable Development Goals , the UN roadmap for a better world by 2030. Now is the time for new and innovative solutions, not just traditional investments that promote and underpin economic growth and productivity.

Visit the World Tourism Organization’s website

The UN World Tourism Organization has prepared a website and digital materials for social networks. Let’s all contribute to promote tourism investments focused on achieving a better world for the benefit of all.

How tourism should invest to contribute to the SDGs

The possibilities of strategic investment for this triple dimension are immense:

For the People by investing in education and skills

Looking ahead, the global tourism workforce will require millions of hospitality graduates annually between now and 2030 and a further 800,000 jobs a year will require specific vocational training. For these reasons, we need to invest in people, as they are the foundation of tourism so that all those who wish to be part of the sector have the same opportunities to access quality tourism training, anywhere in the world.

For the Planet by investing in sustainable infrastructure and accelerating green transformation

Looking into the future, the need to reduce emissions provides an investment opportunity of $24.7 trillion in the green buildings sector of emerging market cities by 2030, in which hotels, resorts, and restaurants account for $1.5 trillion. In addition, tourism faces a lot more investment opportunities related to new solutions and technologies to decarbonize the sector as well as to ensure climate-resilient infrastructure through adaptation solutions.

For Prosperity by investing in innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship

Digitalization and innovation programs are a strategic priority to support particularly young people and women, which are critical to upskill the tourism sector’s workforce. Moreover, the global need to increase investments in programs that support and incentivize entrepreneurship and generate opportunities for innovations is highly need it in the tourism sector.

In order to succeed, let’s make this World Tourism Day a call to action to the international community, governments, multilateral financial institutions, development partners, and private sector investors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy .

What is the Glasgow Declaration?

The Glasgow Declaration is a compromise to accelerate climate action in tourism and to secure strong commitments to support the global goals to halve emissions over the next decade and reach Net Zero emissions as soon as possible before 2050. Over 450 organizations have become signatories of this declaration.

Did you know?

  • Tourism employs one in every ten people on Earth.
  • Tourism in rural areas can particularly benefit traditionally disadvantaged groups such as women - who make up 54% of the workforce in the tourism sector compared to 39% for the whole economy - youth and Indigenous people.
  • In emerging destinations, 50% of young people are unable to work in tourism due to a lack of opportunity, resources, or access to academic training.

International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. History of World Tourism Day

UNWTO was established on this day in 1980 to create awareness on how tourism affects social-cultural, political and economic values globally and the role of tourism within the international community.

Significance of World Tourism Day

On World Tourism Day, UNWTO urges people to highlight the ability of tourism. “By celebrating this day, we state our commitment that, as tourism grows, the benefits that come will be felt at every level of our broad and diverse sector, from the biggest airline to the smallest family business,” Zurab Pololikashvili, UNWTO’s secretary general, said in his official message.

UN secretary general António Guterres said the tourism sector touches almost every part of the global economy and societies, enabling historically marginalised people and those at risk of being left behind to benefit from development that is local and direct. “On World Tourism Day, we recognise the power and potential of tourism to advance prosperity and drive inclusive sustainable development,” he added.

Theme of World Tourism Day 2021

This year the theme of World Tourism Day is 'Tourism for Inclusive Growth'. It aims to help people associated with the tourism sector in every possible way. UNWTO has urged businesses, tourists, UN agencies, member states and non-members to "celebrate tourism’s unique ability to ensure that nobody is left behind as the world begins to open up again and look to the future".

Celebrating World Tourism Day

Keeping World Tourism Day in mind and to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Centre’s initiative to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board is organising various events and activities in the state to promote state tourism and make people aware of the state's rich history, traditions, cultural and national heritage, possibilities, tourism importance etc. and to enhance their tourism knowledge, news agency PTI reported.

Disney seeks major expansion of California theme park to add more immersive attractions

W alking through the frosty, snow-covered hamlet of Arendelle from “Frozen,” or the bustling, critter-filled metropolis of “Zootopia” might be possible one day for visitors to Disney's California theme parks.

That's if Disney wins approval from local officials to expand its Anaheim resort over the next four decades.

The proposed expansion wouldn't increase Disney's 490-acre (488-hectare) footprint in Southern California or change what the company already has permission to build. But it could help the company develop new attractions. They could place rides and entertainment options on what is currently a sprawling, 50-acre (20-hectare) parking lot — and move parking for Disneyland to a multistory structure — all while keeping within the boundaries of a resort surrounded by residential neighborhoods.

“We know there are stories out there we haven’t told yet, like ‘Wakanda’ or ‘Coco’ or ‘Frozen’ or ‘Zootopia’,” said Rachel Alde, Disney’s senior vice president of global development and finance. “We know what kind of stories we would love to tell. We need to get the guidance on what we can build there so we can understand how.”

After a lengthy meeting late Monday, the city of Anaheim’s planning commission voted to recommend approval of the proposal for Disneyland, dubbed the “happiest place on Earth.” The project — which would require Disney to invest at least $1.9 billion in the theme park, lodging, entertainment and related uses over the next decade — still must be approved by the city council before taking effect. The council is expected to consider the project next month.

Disney's goal is to create what it calls more immersive experiences for tourists, similar to the attraction Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, which opened in California in 2019 . The company said it doesn’t yet know which stories would be central to the new developments, but the idea is to create areas like “Zootopia” in Shanghai Disneyland, where animal characters walk through a vibrant cityscape that resembles the setting of the film.

Right now, there isn't enough room in the original Disneyland in California to build something on a large scale without affecting existing attractions, which are relished by loyal, long-time visitors to the company's oldest theme park, Alde said.

During the hourslong planning commission meeting, staff for the city's planning and building department recommended the application be approved.

The project “will allow us to continue Walt’s legacy of bringing Disney stories to life, right here in Anaheim,” Ken Potrock, president of Disneyland Resort, told the commission. Disneyland was founded in 1955 by Walt Disney.

Amid overwhelmingly positive public comment, neighbors and Anaheim residents praised Disney’s outreach to the community, including seeking feedback for noise and design. Other speakers in support included trade organizations, like the California Chamber of Commerce and the California Attractions and Parks Association, and local unions.

It’s the first time Disney has sought a major change to its California theme parks since the 1990s, when the company obtained approvals to turn its first park into a resort hub. It later added a second park, Disney California Adventure Park, and a shopping and entertainment area called Downtown Disney.

Disneyland was the second-most visited theme park in the world in 2022 with 16.8 million people coming through the gates, according to a report by the Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM.

Disney's parks are a tourism magnet for Southern California and especially for Anaheim, which is Orange County’s most populous city and home to more than 345,000 people as well as a major league baseball team and national hockey league team. Hotel revenue typically makes up about half of Anaheim's revenue, and is expected to climb to $236 million this year, according to city estimates.

“Visitors generate a tremendous amount of revenue for our city that allows us to invest in our neighborhoods,” said Erin Ryan, a spokesperson for the city of Anaheim. “Disney brings a lot of tourists here.”

The plan also would require the company to invest tens of millions of dollars in street improvements, affordable housing and other infrastructure in the city. Disney has held workshops to address residents' questions about the proposal, including concerns about the company's plan to absorb a local road into the theme park.

Tourism | $60 billion question: how might walt disney world grow.

Disney is preparing to spend $60 billion on its theme parks worldwide, but an expansion plan for Walt Disney World, or any of its other parks, has not been made public.

There has been a sprinkling of news and hints from company officials, including refurbishment of DinoLand at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and blue-sky talk for a land of some sort “beyond Big Thunder” at Magic Kingdom.

Attractions experts say the investment could mean original rides and lands for Disney World, such as a villains-driven domain; cloning of recent international projects based on “Frozen” and “Zootopia”; or even a fifth theme park, which would be WDW’s first since Animal Kingdom opened in 1998.

Putting more money into theme parks is a “no-brainer,” Walt Disney Co. Bob Iger has said. The billions earmarked for attractions will go into properties around the globe, including Disney Cruise Line, he said.

“If you look at the return on invested capital of that business over the last 20 years, particularly over the last 10, the track record is extraordinary,” Iger said in a recent interview at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference.

“We have thousands of acres of land still to develop. We could actually build seven new full lands, if we wanted to, around the world,” he said.

Disney World ticket deals set for Florida residents this spring, summer

In May 2023, Iger suggested the possibility of withdrawing investment in Florida amid the company’s standoff with Gov. Ron DeSantis. Tensions began after Bob Chapek, then CEO of Walt Disney Co., vowed to fight for repeal of the Parental Bill of Rights law, which opponents dubbed “Don’t Say Gay.”

The governor and Florida Legislature later dissolved the Reedy Creek Improvement District, Disney World’s governmental body. The replacement, called the Central Florida Tourism Oversight, will have influence over future expansion plans.

Whatever gets built, Disney is probably thinking big, said Brian Morrow, owner of Kissimmee-based B Morrow Productions , an attractions-design studio.

“I definitely don’t see – particularly in the Disney and Universal category – any change by building lesser lands or less grandiose environments,” Morrow said. “That’s really how [guests] are making some of their decisions. … ‘How amazing is it? How new is it?’”

But he’s not expecting another theme park, the long-awaited “fifth gate,” to be announced for Walt Disney World.

“Personally, I couldn’t imagine a reality where another full park gets constructed in Orlando,” Morrow said. “There’s a lot of infrastructure cost and high [capital expenditure] cost in developing new properties. But we have plenty of parks in Orlando that just could be bigger or have more things to do or be expanded.”

Dennis Speigel, CEO of Cincinnati-based International Theme Park Services , anticipates fresh, big ideas for Disney World, including a new theme park, and he expects movement soon.

“I’m a confirmed believer that in a short period of time, we’re going to see Disney announce another gate,” he said. “I think they will announce something within the next 24 months, for sure. … From what I’ve heard, this has been being worked on now for the last five, eight, 10 years.”

Speigel points to the availability of land and intellectual property, the growing tourism market and the 2025 opening of Epic Universe, Universal Orlando’s third theme park now under construction, as motivating factors for Disney.

“An announcement of attraction expansion is one level of announcement, but a new gate is a whole different stratum and sends a different message to tourists,” he said. “Disney needs to get this announcement out there to remain the dominant force in Orlando, the mecca of the theme-park industry.”

Expansion would probably follow a familiar pattern, said Len Testa, who runs the Touring Plans, a vacation-planning site.

“Attractions that are most popular, the highest-rated, are super-headliner rides based on beloved multipart movie franchises. Those are the kinds of rides that bring people to Central Florida,” he said.

Lands at Disney and Universal parks are based on “Cars,” “Star Wars” and the “Harry Potter” series.

During a D23 Expo session in September 2022, Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, floated a handful of ideas for Magic Kingdom, specifically in the area “beyond Big Thunder,” the Frontierland roller coaster. He mentioned ideas based on the “Coco” and “Encanto” films as well as Disney’s lineup of animated villains.

Testa said he believes the villain land will happen.

“People love the villains, and the villains can do things,” he said. “They can interact with guests in a way that regular characters can’t. Like they can be sassy in a way that other characters can’t.”

He imagines separately ticketed villain events in addition to a land of their own.

“That would sell a lot, so I think that has some legs,” he said.

In another session of D23, Disney’s official fan club, officials announced that Animal Kingdom’s DinoLand area would be remade with a “tropical Americas” theme. Details were sketchy, but there were oblique references to “Encanto” and Indiana Jones. The Dinosaur ride running in DinoLand shares a ride system with the Indiana Jones Adventure attraction in Disneyland.

Testa expects a full-blown, revamped DinoLand, once the site of Primeval Whirl, a coaster that closed in 2020 and demolished in 2021.

“I think, again, you’re going to see a big thrill ride, you’ll see a family-friendly, possibly dark ride, possibly water-based ride, sort of intermediate thing like Na’vi River Journey [at Animal Kingdom], and then you’ll see a third ride, which is, you know, the Magic Carpets of Aladdin [at Magic Kingdom] or something like that,” he said.

Duplicating rides or lands from other Disney parks might soothe those who cry out “be fair to Florida” when Disney World is not the home base of announced projects.

Disney Imagineering chief Barbara Bouza leaves, citing tensions in division

“A lot of feedback I’m getting is about the attractions and lands being built overseas. Those parks seem to be updating far better and quicker than what we have here in Florida,” said Michele Atwood, owner of The Main Street Mouse , a theme park website, and author of Disney-related books.

A World of Frozen land opened at Hong Kong Disneyland in November, followed by a “Zootopia”-themed land at Shanghai Disneyland in December. Fantasy Springs, which will have elements from “Tangled,” “Frozen” and “Peter Pan,” opens at Tokyo DisneySea in June.

“A lot of folks would like to see WDW follow suit with those updates, including myself,” Atwood said.

Fantasy Springs, including a 'Peter Pan' realm, is set to open at Tokyo DisneySea theme park. (Walt Disney Co.)

In recent years, Disney has completed projects at Epcot, including Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure ride, a “Moana” walk-through attraction and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind roller coaster.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which became the home of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, a land with multiple attractions. Tron: Lightcycle/Run, an indoor-outdoor coaster, opened at Magic Kingdom, where Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, the reimagined Splash Mountain attraction, is scheduled to debut this summer.

Iger is open to duplication. While Pandora, the World of Avatar opened at Animal Kingdom in 2017, there are plans to add one at Disneyland in California.

Disney: New Star Tours scenarios, characters land next month

“That doesn’t mean we can’t put one in somewhere in Asia and somewhere in Europe, for instance,” he said at the Morgan Stanley conference. “We opened up a Frozen land in Hong Kong in November – tremendous response to that. … Build it with excellence and they will come.”

Creating more options makes sense, but it also could overwhelm a vacationing family with time restrictions, Morrow said.

“Also in the industry, and the entertainment industry as a whole, there is a surge of what I would call the smaller experiences happening. These are the things that take two hours to do, not eight hours to do,” he said.

“They might be in a theme park/might not be in a theme park kind of experience. I think is something people are really interested in,” Morrow said.

Universal is developing that sort of attraction elsewhere. It plans to open a kid-oriented park in Frisco, Texas, and a year-round Halloween offering in Las Vegas. Morrow also points to Area15 , a multi-stop art and entertainment district in Vegas that announced a second location would come to Orlando.

“Think many parks, many experiences with multiple attractions … but it doesn’t take all day,” he said.

Government of Canada announces support for 17 organizations based in the Prairies to prevent and address gender-based violence

From: Women and Gender Equality Canada

News release

Today, the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, and the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, announced over $7.4M for 17 organizations located in Manitoba and Saskatchewan to prevent and address gender-based violence.

March 25, 2024 – Winnipeg, Manitoba — Women and Gender Equality Canada

Gender-based violence has profound impacts on Canadian society and cost the lives of too many women, girls and gender-diverse people. Preventing and addressing gender-based violence is a crucial step to advancing gender equality in Canada.

This funding will help these organizations prevent and address gender-based violence by strengthening their communities, building capacity, providing better support and resources, or conducting research. The collaborative spirit driving these initiatives embodies the essence of progress towards gender equality and a stronger, more inclusive Canada.

Today’s announcement builds on the progress under the National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence and the work supporting crisis hotlines across the country. The Government of Canada has recently signed bilateral agreements with all provinces and territories for both initiatives. Coordinated and collaborative actions from federal, provincial, and territorial governments, in collaboration with community organizations, are essential in effectively preventing and addressing gender-based violence.

"Gender-based violence is unacceptable and has no place in our country. It impacts people of all backgrounds, genders, ages, and disproportionally, Indigenous women and girls, 2SLGBTQI+ people and racialized women. These direct federal investments, alongside the National Action Plan to End to Gender-based violence, are about keeping people safe, supporting frontline workers, and making sure that we are addressing the root causes of gender-based violence. Every day, our collaboration with these organizations is moving us closer towards a safer Canada for everyone.” The Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth
“Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people are disproportionately affected by gender-based violence, as well as experiences of stigma, exclusion, and marginalization. The impacts of these experiences are broad and felt across generations, and our government is supporting those impacted to break that cycle. I am committed to supporting organizations advancing gender equality and ending gender-based violence across the Prairies and right here at home in Manitoba.” The Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency

Quick facts

An investment of approximately $601.3 million was made through Budget 2021 to increase efforts to end gender-based violence.

Building on Budget 2021 investments, Budget 2022 committed $539.3 million over five years to support provinces and territories in their efforts to implement the National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence.

These 17 projects are funded through various calls for proposals under the Gender-based Violence Program and the Women’s Program – see details in the backgrounder document (link in section below).

Among the provinces of Canada, the highest rate of gender-related homicide of women and girls was reported in Saskatchewan (1.03), followed by Manitoba (0.72) – all of which were above the national rate (0.54). These provinces also recorded the highest provincial rates of homicide and overall violent crime in 2021.

Rural rates of intimate partner violence against women are significantly higher than those in urban areas in all areas of Canada. The rural areas of Saskatchewan and Manitoba show the highest rates within the provinces.
