mount batur sunrise hike tour

Your adventure starts with a briefing at Bali Sunrise Villas , which is located at the foot of the mountain at 1,000 metres above sea level. After a quick pick-me-up of coffee and tea at the starting point, we’ll make our way up Mount Batur in the cool pre-dawn air under a blanket of stars.

The trek takes about one to two hours to reach the peak at 1,717 metres above sea level. Once you arrive at the highest point, it really feels as though you are on top of the world, as you can see the majestic peak of neighbouring Mount Abang hovering above the clouds, the distant cone of Mount Agung on the horizon, and the caldera lake spread out below.

At the top of the mountain we’ll soak up the beauty of the sunrise and refuel with a light breakfast of fruit and eggs boiled in volcanic steam. There will be plenty of time to relax and take photos of the sunrise and incredible scenery.

Then it’s off to explore the three younger craters and the most recent lava flows. As we make our way down we’ll take in the amazing volcanic landscape and might even come across a troop of mountain monkeys playing on the rocks. Finally we will arrive back at the Bali Sunrise Villas & Restaurant, where a driver will be waiting.

Rough Itinerary and estimated time schedule Pick up time: We pick you up at your hotel and transport you directly to the starting point at Geopark Village at the base of Mount Batur. 03:15 – 03:30:  Our English-speaking guides will give you a quick briefing with information about your trek and the safety procedures. 03:30 – 03:45:  We set off on the trail that leads up Mount Batur. 04:00 – 06:00:  We continue our climb to the crater summit. 06:15 – 06:45: Arrival at the crater summit where we soak up the spectacular sunrise and views and enjoy eggs boiled in volcanic steam. There are several small traditional shops, or warung , at the summit where you can buy hot tea, coffee, or soft drinks. 07:00:  We continue our trek with the possibility to trek around the entire crater. 08:00: We begin our descent to Geopark Village , the finishing point of our trek. 09:00 – 09:30: We arrive at Geopark Village . From here we will either drive you back to your hotel, take you to the hot springs (for those who added the hot spring option), or on to your next tour or activity.

Things to know before booking your Mount Batur tour

  • Aiming for the classic sunrise views and don't mind an early morning start? Sunrise tours are the way to go. Prefer a relaxed climb with a later start time and dramatic sunset views? Opt for a sunset tour .
  • Craving privacy and a tailored experience ? Book a private tour or trek . Enjoy the comfort of a dedicated guide and vehicle, perfect for families, solo travelers, or those who want to set the pace. Budget is a bigger factor? Shared transfers offer a cost-effective option. Meet fellow adventurers and experience the climb together while a knowledgeable guide leads the way.
  • Hike or ride? Mount Batur offers two adventures based on your desired difficulty level . The trek takes you to the summit , conquering rugged terrain for epic views ( perfect for hikers !). Prefer a relaxed ascent ? While a jeep tour won’t take you to the peak, you’ll reach a stunning vantage point. It’s ideal if you want to enjoy the scenery without the exertion or have physical limitations.
  • Some Mount Batur tours include a soak in nearby natural hot springs — perfect for post-adventure relaxation. However, not all tours have this. Check your tour itinerary before booking if hot springs is a priority.
  • Rest assured, a delicious breakfast is included in all our Mount Batur tours . Savor a satisfying meal after your climb to replenish your energy.
  • Foreign nationals and Indonesian citizens may encounter slightly different pricing structures for Mount Batur tours. This is due to local government regulations regarding entrance fees and permits.

Mount Batur offers two distinct ways to experience its volcanic wonder: trekking or a jeep tour. The best choice depends on how adventurous you are, and your fitness level.

Jeep tours:

This option is ideal if you’re looking for a more relaxed journey , traveling with kids , or have physical limitations . Enjoy a comfortable ride in a 4x4 vehicle. While the jeep tour reaches a slightly lower elevation than the trek, it still provides clear sunrise or sunset views.

If you’re an adventure enthusiast or a seasoned trekker,  then the trek might be your perfect match. It's a rewarding adventure that takes you right to the peak ,  blending views, fitness, and a sense of accomplishment. Be prepared for steep inclines, loose slippery gravel, and an early pre-dawn start . Average fitness is recommended, and those seeking a more leisurely climb might find it strenuous.

A couple trekking around Mount Batur

Mount Batur is a relatively easy climb, but safety should always be your top priority. Here are some key safety tips to remember:

  • Trek with a guide: Booking a guided tour is the smartest choice. Experienced guides are certified in mountain safety and will be with you every step of the way, offering support, navigation, and valuable insights throughout your ascent.
  • Stay weather-wise: Check the local weather forecast before you embark on your climb. While rain can add a touch of adventure, it can also make the path slippery and more challenging. Lightning is a serious hazard during thunderstorms, so be prepared to postpone your climb if necessary.
  • Sturdy footwear is essential: Proper footwear is crucial for a safe and enjoyable trek. Opt for sturdy hiking boots with good traction to navigate the loose volcanic terrain. Avoid sandals, flip-flops, or even normal boots that offer no ankle support and can be dangerous on uneven surfaces.
  • Don’t forget Mount Batur is active: Remember, Mount Batur is an active volcano. While the last major eruption occurred in 2000, it's always wise to be aware of volcanic activity and follow any safety instructions provided by your guide or local authorities.

Girl Enjoying sunset on Mount Batur - Bali

  • Dress for adventure: Layer up! Temperatures can be cool at the summit, especially early in the morning. Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that you can easily adjust as you climb. Long pants are recommended to protect your legs from scrapes and insect bites.
  • Pack smart: Bring a backpack to carry essentials like a headlamp (a flashlight for the pre-dawn climb may be included depending on your choice of tour), water, snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. Don't forget a camera to capture the breathtaking views!
  • Be prepared for all weather: A light rain jacket is a good idea, especially during the rainy season. Pack a small bag to keep your belongings dry if needed.
  • Physical fitness: While the climb is manageable for most people in decent physical condition, it's still a physical activity. Be prepared for some exertion, especially on the way up. It’s better to warm up beforehand.
  • Stay hydrated: Dehydration can occur quickly at altitude, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout your climb.
  • Embrace the early start: Sunrise tours typically begin very early in the morning (around 1 am to 3 am). Get a good night's sleep beforehand and be prepared for a pre-dawn wake-up call.
  • Consider a walking stick: A walking stick can provide added stability and support, especially on the descent.

Mount Batur at Sunrise

  • Height: 1,717 meters (5,633 feet)
  • Volcanic activity: Active volcano, last major eruption in 2000
  • Outer caldera: This behemoth is roughly 29,300 years old and a staggering 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in diameter. Imagine fitting over 14 Central Parks inside!
  • Inner caldera: Formed around 20,150 years ago, this caldera measures 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) wide
  • Known for: Sunrise views, landscapes, and Lake Batur
  • Hiking trail: 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long to the summit
  • Ascent time: 2 hours (approx)
  • Descent: 1.5 to 2 hours (approx)
  • Unique ecosystem: The volcanic soil may seem like a barren wasteland, but it's surprisingly fertile due to the presence of mineral-rich ash.
  • Cultural fact: It's believed to be the dwelling place of Batara Batur, a powerful spirit associated with creation and harmony.

Choose between sunrise or sunset tours for the best views. Opt for a trek or jeep tour depending on your fitness level. Private tours offer a personalized experience, while shared tours allow you to meet fellow adventurers and are more pocket-friendly. All tours include round-trip transfers , expert English-speaking guides , and a delicious breakfast to fuel your adventure. You can also opt to visit natural hot springs.

If you're looking for a challenge , are moderately fit , and want to reach the peak on foot, then the trek is the way to go. It offers a more hands-on experience with stunning viewpoints along the way. If you prefer a relaxed climb , are traveling with kids , or have physical limitations , a jeep tour is a perfect option. You'll get equally incredible views from accessible vantage points without the exertion of a full trek.

Apart from the gorgeous views, consider your travel style. If you opt for a sunrise tour, it allows you to be back in town by the afternoon and enjoy the rest of your day in Bali. If you have other things you’d like to see or want a late start, spend your day as you please before heading over to Mount Batur for a sunset tour.

Achievable for most with decent fitness, the climb to Mount Batur's peak is moderate.  The trek’s about 6km uphill, with an elevation reaching 1717m. The early pre-dawn start for sunrise tours can be a challenge, but manageable with a guide and tools (included in your tour).  Consider a jeep tour for a relaxed ascent, especially if you're traveling with family or have physical limitations.

The views from the summit of Mount Batur are incredible. From the top, you'll see the Batur caldera floor with its black lava flows, green vegetation, and Lake Batur, a turquoise lake. On clear days, you can even see Mount Agung, Bali's highest peak, on the horizon.

The dry season (April to October) offers the best chance of clear skies for sunrise views. Peak dry months (June to August) are the most consistent, while shoulder months (September & October) can be a good compromise.

It's possible to climb Mount Batur in the rain, but it definitely affects the difficulty and enjoyment of the trek. The loose volcanic gravel can become more slippery and muddy, making the footing less stable. Clouds and rain might also reduce visibility. If you do plan to trek in the rain, invest in weather-proof clothes, hiking boots, and a walking stick for better traction.

The entire Mount Batur experience, including transportation, trek, and breakfast, takes around 3 to 4 hours. The ascent itself takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

Mount Batur's trek can be challenging if you have mobility limitations. Consider a jeep tour instead and get to see the best volcanic views in Indonesia without the hassle of climbing!

Yes, all our Mount Batur tours include a breakfast enjoyed at the peak or upon descent.

Opt for a jeep tour instead of a trek if you have mobility limitations. Private jeep tours offer a comfortable and personalized experience.

Keep a rain-proof windcheater handy. Temperatures at the summit average between 10-15°C, especially at sunrise, especially during sunrise hours. Dress in breathable clothing . Wear h iking boots and bring a backpack for essentials. It's better to be slightly cool during the climb and have the option to layer up at the summit than to be uncomfortably cold at the top. You can always remove layers as needed during the trek.

Mount Batur Hike In Bali: How To Do The Sunrise Trek

The Mount Batur hike in Kintamani , Bali is one of the most popular and enjoyable sunrise trekking experiences you can have in Indonesia.

It’s not very hard to do the Mount Batur Bali trek from any part of the island, and the guided trek takes you up a still active volcano — Gunung Batur — with a summit elevation of more than 1,700 meters.

Mount Batur sunrise trekking is especially popular because you can catch amazing views of the sunrise from the top of the mountain, usually in a sea of orange clouds. Sunset trekking can also be interesting if you don’t like the idea of waking up early.

I’ve done this Bali volcano hike many times over the years, and the Mt Batur trek is always a completely memorable adventure in its own way.

Mount Batur is currently open for hiking as of 2024. Back in May 2023, there was some talk from the former Bali governor about banning tourists from hiking the mountain, but thankfully that hasn’t happened.

In this guide, I’ll explain how you can hike Mount Batur for sunrise or sunset, with or without a guide, and everything else you need to know before you go!

It’s about a 2 hour drive to Mount Batur from Canggu, Kuta, Sanur, or Seminyak, and about a 1 hour drive from Ubud.

Or, if you stay a night at a hotel directly in Kintamani, you can walk to the volcano from your hotel! That’s how we did our latest Mount Batur sunrise trek.

About The Gunung Batur Volcano

Mount Batur (also known as ‘Gunung Batur’ in Indonesian) is part of an active volcano that’s believed to have formed in a massive apocalyptic eruption about 25,000 years ago.

At one time (before it blew its top), Batur was apparently more than 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) tall — making it even bigger than Mount Agung , Bali’s current tallest volcano (which is already huge).

Almost two dozen eruptions have happened at Gunung Batur since 1804 when recording first started, and it last erupted in 1999-2000.

That sounds scary, but any signs of impending volcanic activity are constantly monitored by the Indonesian government so Batur is generally very safe to climb.

Since 2015, UNESCO lists the Mount Batur caldera as a global geopark for its fantastic volcanic landscapes.

Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking

• starting the mount batur hike.

Mount Batur sunrise tours start with a very early morning pickup (2 AM-ish) so your guide can drive you all the way to Kintamani for a hike to the top of the volcano in time for sunrise.

The Mount Batur hike is very popular, so you’ll most likely be trekking in the company of dozens (if not hundreds) of other international and local tourists all sharing the same path.

At the top of the Mount Batur view point, you cross the rim of the volcano and then you’re greeted by packs of Balinese monkeys eager to share your sunrise (and your snacks)! Keep a close eye on them.

On our last hike to Mt Batur, one monkey stole our entire snack bag, and by the time we got it back he had looted the Pocari Sweat and drank it in front of us. Nakal monyet .

• How Hard Is The Hike?

The hike up Mount Batur takes about 2 hours (give or take) depending on your fitness level, and it’s steep but not dangerous at all as long as you stay on the path. If you’re feeling unsure about this hike, just DO IT!

Anyone can do the trek, but I wouldn’t take that to mean it’s a complete joke either. The climb up is a decent calf killer, and the walk down is a bit of an ankle buster.

It’s a fair bit of elevation gain. You will be plenty sore after the hike! Plan on a Balinese foot massage afterwards.

If you want a harder volcano hike than Mt. Batur with less crowds, consider doing the Mount Agung hike in the same area. However, the climb up Agung is a much, much tougher hike than Mt. Batur.

Kintamani and Lake Batur

• Mount Batur Hike Distance

The Mount Batur hike distance depends on where you start and end your trekking, but generally it’s about 3-5 kilometers (2-3 miles) roundtrip.

AllTrails (and some travel blogs) are incorrect for this hike when they list it at 9.3 kilometers (5.8 miles). Looking at a Mount Batur map, that’s only the distance if you completely circle both volcano craters, and start from the bottom of the road in Toya Bungkah village.

The real Mount Batur hike distance is quite a bit shorter, so keep that in mind when you see inflated figures like that.

• Mount Batur Height

The Mount Batur height at its summit is 1,717 meters (5,633 feet). You don’t need to acclimatize to altitude before doing the hike.

It’s a fair change in elevation if you’re coming from sea level in the touristy areas of south Bali, but it’s definitely not enough of a change to cause altitude sickness, so you don’t need to worry about anything of that sort.

• Mount Batur Elevation Gain

The Mount Batur elevation gain depends on where you start and end your hike, but generally it’s about 500 meters (1,650 feet).

• Mount Batur Weather

The Mount Batur weather is quite a bit cooler than other parts of Bali, although it’s never frigid.

Overnight temperatures can drop below 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit), and the wind can make it feel colder than that.

You’ll definitely want to bring a light jacket to wear at the top of the Mount Batur view point, and that way you can stay warm while waiting for the sunrise.

After the Mount Batur sunrise, the weather warms up and you’ll be ready to shed the jacket on your way down.

Speaking of weather, what if clouds or fog roll in and block your view of the sunrise? Unfortunately it happens sometimes, and I’ve seen it myself.

Regardless of how much planning you do, ultimately there is no way to predict the weather on Mount Batur. You just have to give it a shot, and hope for the best.

• Mount Batur Sunrise

The Mount Batur sunrise is an awesome sight to see. It’s so worthwhile.

On the right you have Lake Batur and the peaks of Gunung Abang, with the Mount Agung volcano just barely visible above them.

Directly behind the sunrise is the Bali Sea, and on a clear day you can even make out the shape of Mount Rinjani on Lombok island way off in the distance!

• Breakfast At Mt Batur

After sunrise at Mount Batur, it’s time for breakfast. Most tour guides include this for free in the trekking packages, and you’re going to be hungry after spending your morning climbing a mountain.

Since Mt Batur is an active volcano, there are small heat vents to be found at the top of the crater, and the tour guides will usually let you cook eggs by sticking them in the heat vents.

It’s yet another fun and unique activity to enjoy on this Bali volcano! I mean really, how often do you get the chance to cook eggs with heat vents from an active volcano?

What To Bring

  • Jacket: Bring an extra layer for the Mount Batur sunrise trek. You’ll shed your jacket right away as you heat up, but then you’ll probably want it again at the top while you sit and wait for the sunrise.
  • Footwear: Regular shoes are fine, but sturdy hiking shoes are better for the Mount Batur hike. You can also do it with hiking sandals, but I wouldn’t wear flip flops. You’ll be walking on slippery gravel and steep inclines or declines at times.
  • Poncho: If you go during the rainy season (especially December to February), you might want to bring a rain jacket just in case.
  • Water: Most Batur tours will give you a small bottle of water for the hike, but if you can bring 1L or 1.5L per person that’s better.
  • Snacks: Again, even though most tours include free breakfast, you’ll probably be wanting energy snacks to go with it.
  • Headlight: Mount Batur sunrise trekking tours will provide cheapo flashlights, but a quality headlight will be even better.
  • Camera: Essential. A small tripod could be handy too since it’ll be dark before the sunrise.

You can hike Batur any time of the year, but the best months are April to November, when there’s less rain and the mountain visibility is better. June through September are especially dry, and that’s when you have the best chance of seeing a spectacular sunrise.

Mount Batur Deaths & Safety

Accidents and deaths are rare at Mount Batur, although a 25 year old Swedish tourist unfortunately fell into the crater and died in 2010, and a 70 year old American fell to his death in 2022.

These are two of the only confirmed Mount Batur deaths to date, even though hundreds of tourists hike the volcano for sunrise every day.

The hiking path is quite safe as long as you stay away from steep edges. The drop-offs are easy to avoid as long as you can see them.

You should always have a light for hiking in the dark (Mt. Batur guides can provide this), and please don’t ever try to take selfies or other pictures near steep cliff edges.

As long as you follow these rules, the Mount Batur hike is very safe and even kids can do it.

Monkeys at Gunung Batur

King of the mountain. The Mount Batur monkeys can be sneaky.

Mount Batur Tour Guide / Mafia Requirement

Even though it’s a fairly simple hike that could be done solo, Mount Batur is controlled by a local trekking group (mafia) that doesn’t let anyone climb the volcano without paying for a local guide.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve climbed Mount Everest and you’re the picture of fitness, you’ll still be forced to hire a local guide and pay your dues for the Mount Batur sunrise trek.

People who try to climb the mountain without a guide have reported being verbally abused by locals (“you’re a terrorist”) and even shoved, kicked, or physically threatened. Hopefully the Bali government will step in and put an end to this.

As much as I don’t like rewarding this kind of bad behavior, keep in mind it is motivated by poverty. Kintamani is a very poor area of Bali. There are also a few other benefits to hiring a guide:

  • Transport: Who wants to be driving in a foreign country at 2 AM? Better to pay someone else to do it for you.
  • Navigation: Even though the path is easy to find in the daytime, it’s definitely more tricky in the dark before sunrise.
  • Assistance: Guides will give you a hand on the mountain, and help you snap photos with the sunrise.
  • Supplies: Most tours include some things you’ll need for Mount Batur sunrise trekking, like breakfast, bottled water, flashlights, etc.
  • Peace of Mind: Is $30 or $40 USD really worth getting into a fight with the locals on your holiday?

Mount Batur Without Guide – Directions

If you’re resolved to hike Mount Batur without a tour guide, the best way to attempt it is on the north side of the mountain .

The trail on the north side is more quiet and only seems to get used by people starting directly from Kintamani village (i.e. locals and overnighters) doing the Mount Batur sunrise trek.

This side wasn’t monitored by anyone when we went, but that may change. My best advice is to navigate to Red Lava Campground and then walk up, up, up the slope.

The path to the top of Mt.Batur isn’t too hard to follow without a guide, even in the dark — just follow the elevation. There are dozens of converging trails that all meet at the summit. The only challenge will be finding the start, so give yourself some extra time for that.

Morning views at Mount Batur Bali

Mount Batur Afternoon Trekking

If you’re not really interested in seeing the Mount Batur sunrise, or the early start won’t work for you, then it’s always possible to do morning or afternoon trekking at Mount Batur.

You won’t see the same epic sunrise at the Mount Batur view point, of course, and the other downside is that it may be harder to find other travelers to share a group with you. Plus, fog is more likely to block the views altogether.

Morning and afternoon aren’t popular times to hike this volcano, but that can be a good thing if you’re wanting to avoid the big crowds.

Mount Batur Sunset Trekking

If you don’t like waking up early for the sunrise, and would rather stay an extra night in Kintamani, then it’s also possible to do sunset trekking at Mount Batur.

The Mount Batur sunset isn’t quite as dramatic as sunrise since you don’t have Gunung Abang in the background, but you’re still bound to get some great views.

Better yet, if you feel like camping, you can do a 2-day Mount Batur trek and witness both the sunrise and the sunset! This is a unique way to get more time on the mountain.

Where To Stay

Nowadays there are lots of great budget friendly Kintamani hotels if you want to stay overnight before your Mount Batur sunrise trek. See below for some recommendations.

The main advantage of staying in Kintamani is that you have easier access to the Mt. Batur volcano so you can wake up later for the hike. That means starting at 4 AM, instead of 1-2 AM if you start from other areas of Bali like Ubud, Kuta, or Sanur.

The other reason to stay in Kintamani is that there are some great things to see besides the volcano . You can soak in the natural hot springs at Lake Batur, visit the traditional villages and temples, etc.

Mount Batur Hot Spring

Since Mount Batur is an active volcano, there is also a hot spring nearby by the name of Toya Devasya.

The facilities are nothing special, but the hot spring has an amazing view of Lake Batur and the surrounding mountains — almost like an infinity pool.

Many Mount Batur tours include this hot spring as part of the itinerary, and it’s a great way to relax after the hike!

Is Mount Batur Worth It?

Now it’s time for the most important question of all — is Mount Batur worth it? Yes, I definitely think so!

Aside from the novelty of hiking on an active volcano, with steaming heat vents and playful monkeys, you also get to witness one of the most amazing sunrise views in Bali, Indonesia. I don’t normally like waking up so early for sunrise, but this one is worth it!

Generally you won’t see flowing red hot lava at Batur, but the entire southwestern slope of the volcano is surrounded by a field of old black lava rock that’s now used for dirt biking tours and other fun activities. Overall, Mount Batur is well worth a visit when you’re in Bali!

Is Mount Batur Open / Closed?

Yes, Mount Batur is currently open to tourists and hikers as of 2024! There are no impending plans to close it. I’ll update this travel guide if anything changes.

Back in May 2023, the former governor of Bali threatened to close all of the island’s 22 mountains to hikers because of one or two tourists misbehaving. Thankfully there was a lot of pushback on this idea, and so far no new law has been issued.

The mountain is rarely closed to the public, and that would generally only happen temporarily if there’s some kind of unusual volcanic activity or other safety concerns. Right now it’s still open.

Happy travels!

Do you have any recommendations for the best shoes (for women) for this? I’m coming to Bali in early September from America & im trying to pack light. Would all purpose “hiking sandals” (from Keen, Merrell, or Teva – for example) be acceptable?

' src=

Hi Mick! Hiking boots with ankle support would be best, but you could do it in hiking sandals if you’re needing to save space in your bag. It’s not a very long hike, but the gravel can be slippery, especially on the way back down, so you’ll want something with a bit of grip. As long as you watch your footing, I think that would be fine.

I’m looking to travel to Bali in the next month, and have come across a few sites and posts that say the tourist bans have now become official. Any truth to that? I haven’t been able to find any legitimate /government-backed articles about it, but the rumors have definitely got me feeling concerned. Hiking Mt. Batur is one of the highlights for me.

Hi Bree. Currently Mount Batur is still open for hiking, so nothing has changed yet. Personally I think it’s very unlikely there will be any ban, but I’ll be monitoring the situation closely and I’ll update this article if anything changes.

Can you climb Mount Batur without a guide?

climb Mount Batur

While it is possible to climb Mount Batur without a guide, we do not recommend it. Many accidents happen every year with tourists who attempt to hike the volcano on their own. You don’t want to be another one of these statistics.

By hiking without a guide, you run the risk of getting lost if you don’t follow the correct path and there is even the chance of you getting injured.

Having an experienced guide leading the way ensures your safety and that you’ll hike up the right trail. A guide will also help you avoid any dangerous areas, which may be caused by recent mudslides and unexpected gas.

Furthermore, a professional guide enhances your experience by taking care of your travel arrangements and providing interesting commentary about Balinese culture, wildlife and heritage along the way.

What should I wear?

Mount Batur, Bali

If you plan to hike up Mount Batur, it is essential that you wear comfortable and breathable clothing. The most important item is undoubtedly your walking shoes, which should be worn-in and the right size if you want to avoid blisters and sore feet.

Early mornings can be chilly so you may want to wear long pants and a jacket to start with, but you can expect temperatures to rise as the day goes on. Wearing layers will make it easy for you to shed clothing items as you warm up during the hike.

While you don’t need to wear professional fitness gear, you should try to wear clothing that is flexible and that won’t chafe you. Keep in mind that you’ll be wearing this clothing for at least a few hours and you want to prioritize your comfort.

What should I bring?

Mount Bertur, Bali, Indonesia

As most Mount Batur sunrise tours include a dip in the nearby hot springs, you should pack your swimsuit and a towel. You may also want to bring sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and any other forms of sun protection that may be useful for your hike back down the volcano.

While breakfast and mineral water are typically provided by the tour operator, you may want to bring a few snacks to keep your energy levels up during the trek. A few snack ideas include fruit, energy bars and nuts.

As you’ll enjoy incredible views of the surrounding area, you should bring your camera to make use of the incredible photo opportunities on offer. Some tours are inclusive of professional photographs, but it’s always nice to have your own camera too.

If you’re visiting a temple on the way back to your hotel, you should bring the appropriate clothing along with you. When visiting a temple in Bali, you’ll typically need to cover your legs and shoulders.

Is the Mount Batur sunrise trek difficult?

Mount Batur sunrise

While the hike up Mount Batur is often characterized by its rocky terrain and steep inclines, the trek is considered easy to moderate overall. Most fitness levels can complete the hike with ease, but it’s important to pace yourself and pay attention to where you are placing your feet.

If you are not used to hiking, you may find the hike quite challenging but just remember that the view from the top of the volcano makes it all worth it! You’ll definitely feel a sense of pride when you reach the summit.

Hiking in the dark can create an extra level of difficulty, so if you are doing a sunrise hike you should bring a torch along with you or ensure that the tour operator provides torches for its participants.

Can kids climb Mount Batur?

kids in Mount Batur

So long as your children are healthy and have a moderate level of physical fitness, they should not have a problem completing the climb up Mount Batur. However, most tour operators require children to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Certain tour operators may also require children to be at least 10 years old should they want to participate in a Mount Batur sunrise hike. If you want to hike the volcano with your kids, there are plenty of family-friendly excursions to choose from.

What is the best time to climb Mount Batur?

climbing Mount Batur

While the volcano can be hiked at any time of day, sunrise is the most popular choice thanks to the cooler temperatures and magnificent sunrise views that are characterized by puffy clouds and a painter’s palette of beautiful colors.

No matter what time of year you decide to visit Mount Batur, sunrise takes place between 6 AM and 6:30 AM. Enjoying sunrise from Mount Batur’s summit offers you incredible views of the surrounding area, which includes rice fields, Lake Batur and even Lombok Island.

You should avoid climbing the volcano on a rainy day as the clouds will obscure the sunrise and the visibility of nearby natural attractions. Bali’s dry season, which is the most popular period for Mount Batur hikes, takes place between April and October each year.

Mount Batur Sunrise Trek, Bali, Indonesia

Taking in the incredible view of sunrise from Mount Batur, Bali

The Mount Batur sunrise trek in Bali, Indonesia is a rewarding and magical way to start the day. Plus, sunrises in Bali don’t get better than this!

After a few weeks of beaches, palm trees and swimming in Raja Ampat , Gili T and northern Bali, it was time to challenge myself.

While I wouldn’t say I’m unfit, I’m no gym bunny. I tried yoga once and was in pain for a week! Oh and I’m pretty hazardous on two wheels. I’m not bad at running, but often lack the motivation required to find my trainers, let alone lace them up!

So when I reached Bali, it was time to stop being so lazy and get the blood pumping again.

Mt Batur (known in Indonesia as Gunung Batur) is an active volcano, and its peak is at 1717 metres. Due to high daytime temperatures the trekking tours all set off early in the morning, when you’ll enjoy the added bonus of catching sunrise from the top.

The Mount Batur trekking tour is offered on a few websites including GetYourGuide – a professional tour booking website, which I’ve used around the world. This is one of their most popular tours, and has over 1900 reviews giving it an average of 4.8 out of 5!

I knew this was the tour for me when I saw that it also included a relaxing stop at some hot springs after the hike. A few other I looked at included a coffee plantation tour, but I had a feeling my body would be calling out for some thermal waters after what I was about to put it through. There are also options of private tours if you want your own travel guide for the duration of the volcano hike.

Hiking Up Mount Batur For Sunrise

After being picked up from our accommodation in Ubud at 2.30am by an English speaking driver, we travelled for around an hour to a hotel close to Mount Batur, where we joined a group of around 20 people.

After a cup of coffee we were given torches and started the walk to the base of the volcano. There were lots of people around, not just from our tour group, also starting the ascent.

Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking: The Ascent

By this time it was after 4am and we were told that sunrise would be around 6am – just two hours to go! We realised that in order to reach the summit for the first rays we’d need to keep a pretty moderate pace.

Similar to my sunrise experience at Borobudur a few weeks before, it was a strange feeling starting the climb in the pitch black, not knowing what surrounded us.

Local guide Adi was friendly, motivating, and stayed with us the whole way up. He was an excellent example of a responsible tour guide, and was passionate about the area he calls home. He climbs Mount Batur every single day, so I figured we were in pretty safe hands!

The first twenty minutes weren’t too bad. The path weaved through a forest at a gentle gradient. It was nice and cool and we stopped regularly for a swig of water and a pep talk!

After a while the path became much steeper. Not only that, but it was slippery – the volcanic rubble hard to grip onto even in hiking boots.

At a whopping 5 ft 1, I’m not blessed with the tall gene, and at times I found the leg extension really difficult with the route being so steep.

Mount Batur sunrise trekking in Bali

Every now and then I twisted around to see a beautiful deep orange glow starting to form behind Mount Agung (another volcano nearby). There was also a lovely light shimmer across Lake Batur.

I knew that if I could make it to the summit, this sunrise was going to be really special.

With each step I became more and more breathless. My face reddened until it was a bright shade of beetroot (thank god it was still dark and no one could see me!)

‘This is much harder than I expected,’ I thought, legs turning to jelly. The group split into sub-groups on the ascent, some wanting to race up while others took a gentler pace, less bothered about making it for sunrise.

It became a battle of mind over matter. My body was struggling and wanted to give up, but my mind was going all the way.

“Ten minutes to the top,” Adi shouted.

“Come on Chloe, you can do this,” I responded, silently.

Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking: The Summit

When you reach the summit of Mount Batur volcano there’s a strange adrenaline that kicks in. You see THAT view and you just know it was all worth it. You feel proud. It’s so rewarding.

It’s not even 6am and look how much you’ve achieved!

You don’t want to sit down. You don’t want to go to sleep. You want to hug everyone at the top. You want to dance around like a loony!

I looked around and couldn’t believe it. The thick blanket of darkness was being replaced by glistening orange and gold rays, bursting from the silhouette of Mount Agung.

There was a low mist hanging – spooky but magical. Lake Batur had a glassy untouched sheen. The view was spectacular, and even more special than expected.

I’d seen photos before the day trip, but they didn’t do it justice. To stand there and look around at the panorama is something I’ll never forget.

Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking: The Views

As each second ticked by the light changed, illuminating more of the beautiful surroundings.

A few hundred people climb Mt Batur (Gunung Batur) each day, but different tour companies take different routes up (turns out our route was the hardest…!) and end at different parts of the summit. A friend of mine did the tour a few months later and had a different experience, getting a motorbike up some of the way – I was shocked!

Thankfully, it meant that our spot wasn’t overrun with people and felt strangely calm. Everyone was just staring out, taking it all in.

Soon enough, the sun was high in the sky and our English-speaking guide Adi was helping prep breakfast – boiled eggs cooked in the steam from the volcano!

They were served in a breakfast box with bread and fruit. They were the most delicious boiled eggs I’d ever tasted – sprinkled with the sweet flavour of victory!

Joining us for breakfast, a few monkeys who were playing around the summit, no doubt well fed on leftover breakfasts!

Mount batur sunrise hike: the descent.

After several photos, we started the descent, following a completely different path to the way up.

The first half was on steep, slippery rubble. After bracing my legs for part of the route, I discovered it was much easier to run down. The path continued back through the forest and soon enough, we were back at our starting point.

Mount Batur – Bali Trekking Tour: The Reward

As a treat, we rewarded ourselves with a soak at Toya Devasya hot springs. Located right on the lake, it was a spectacular spot to reflect on our adventurous morning.

I’m so glad I pushed myself to climb Mount Batur. It wasn’t easy but it reminded me how important it is to challenge yourself every now and then.

Despite the struggles on the way up, this Bali trekking tour was one of the highlights of my month in Indonesia, even more so as I got to share it with two of my favourite people in the world. So what are you waiting for? Sign yourself up and go for it!

What a buzz it was to complete the Mount Batur Sunrise Trek . I hope you’ve found this travel guide helpful. You can find out more about the tour, check prices and book here .

You can also check availability easily with this handy booking tool…

If you’d rather skip the hot springs, you could go for this option which includes a coffee plantation tour, or this option which includes an incredible white water rafting trip too – perfect for adventure lovers!

Tips For Climbing Mount Batur At Sunrise

Clothing : Before the sun rises it’s a bit chilly. I wore leggings, a sports vest and a zip up hoody, which was perfect for the conditions.

Footwear : I wore hiking shoes but proper trainers would also have been fine. You need decent foot support and grip so definitely no flip-flops or sandals.

Water : Our tour company gave us one bottle of water, but I’d recommend taking one more.

Food : Breakfast was included with our tour, but bear in mind this isn’t until you reach the summit.

I ate a chocolate bar for energy on the way up. I also took a few sweets to suck on. Any excuse for some sugar!

Toilets : Nope, they don’t exist on volcanoes so go before you start the climb. You’ll probably be pretty dehydrated so won’t need it until you get back after.

If not, then at least it’s dark most of the way up!

Fitness : I would honestly say that anyone could do this if they really wanted to. As mentioned, our tour split into groups so people could take it at their own pace.

Wow amazing adventure and love the sunrise jump photos and hot spring ones.. can I kindly ask what time did you depart back to hotel when adding toya devasya to the itinerary please

Thank you! It’s an amazing experience. I can’t remember exactly but I seem to remember it was just around lunchtime? Maybe midday? Not too sure though as it was a while ago!

Lovely pictures Chloe. I have been to Indonesia but a pity I couldn’t climb a volcano. I think it is time for me to visit again 😀

Thanks Deepika! It was such a beautiful experience… and the challenge made it more rewarding! I hope you get the chance to go! Cx

I’m going on holiday in Bali next month and wondering about this hike. It sounds like it was worth the effort!

Thanks Shanti – it was definitely worth it and great to go out of your comfort zone every now and then! I certainly earned my time by the beach the week after! 🙂

What an amazing adventure! I want to do that one now. I’m arriving in Thailand next week, and then I definitely plan to get to Indonesia in the next couple months. Climbing a volcano is definitely on my bucket list!

Thank you Skye!! I hope you get the chance to do this – let me know how you get on. It’s quite an exhausting hike but it’s good to push yourself sometimes!

The adventure sounds amazing! I am planning to do this in March and greet the rising sun on my birthday 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation on the tour guide. Was the drop off back at the hotel included or it is own transport back? It doesn’t clarify on their website.

Hi Victoria, What an amazing birthday idea! We got dropped off back at our little apartment, so it was nice and easy! We were knackered by then so went and treated ourselves to burgers in Ubud!

Amazing pictures and such useful information for future travellers. Thanks very much!

Thank you so much – it’s an amazing place for photography!

Just booked my hike for March, can’t wait!! 😀

I hope you have an amazing time. It’s such a beautiful hike!

Thanks Chloe I was taking a group and we were skeptical whether to go for it or not .. took the leap after reading your experience . it would have been a blunder to miss it … trekking on a volcano was an out of this world experience .

The Ultimate Guide to the Mt Batur Sunrise Hike, Bali

The Mt Batur sunrise hike is a must on any trip to Bali! From how much it costs to what to wear, here’s everything you need to know about the Mt Batur hike!

mt batur sunrise hike

There was silence. At 6am, that might not be much of a surprise, but considering I’d just done the Mt Batur sunrise hike with dozens of other people, the silence was something you notice. It was a sign of respect.

Occasionally, someone would scrape their feet on the black volcanic gravel beneath them, and in the distance you could just hear panting as the next person conquered the volcano, grins plastered to their faces.

For everyone else, our eyes we firmly trained on the horizon.

As each minute went by, the outline of Mount Agung and Lake Batur in front of us became clearer and clearer as the sky turned from purple to pink or gold.

Then it happened, the moment we had all been waiting for.

The sun slowly crested from behind Mount Agung, golden sun spears bathing us all in light, the warmth instantly hitting our faces. I looked around and everyone was smiling. And there was still that silence.

As far as wake up calls go, climbing Mount Batur at sunrise was 100% worth it.

In fact, it was one of the best things I’ve done in a very long time.

Booking our Mount Batur tour

After doing my research, I booked my Mount Batur tour through GetYourGuide as everyone raved about them. This particular tour actually won an award as one of the best GetYourGuide tours in 2019, so you know it’s a good one!

This tour includes hotel pick up from Ubud (as well as a few other locations), and then your travel towards the active volcano near the village of Kintamani.

Unlike a lot of other tours, this one includes a visit to the coffee plantation in the village of Temen. Here you get to an insight into local life while drinking some of the best coffee in Indonesia .

Even though this is a little bit more expensive than some local tour operators, you get what you pay for. Also, only local guides are used so this is a responsible travel company.

What time does the Mount Batur hike start?

Rewind back to 2am and my alarm went off, pitch black outside.

I have to admit, I really don’t mind 2am wake up calls, especially when I’m doing something like hiking up an active volcano.

Like a lot of people doing the Mt Batur sunrise hike that day, we were staying in Ubud. At 2:30am, exactly on the minute, our tour turned up at our hotel to pick us up. I think it took about an hour to drive to Mount Batur but I was half asleep. I wish I could say I used that time wisely and I slept for an hour but I was just too excited!

ubud to mt batur

At around 3:30am we arrived at Bali Sunrise Villa for some much-needed coffee and a couple of energy bars. If there was one thing that was going to help me through the morning it was coffee!

All food and coffee is included in the tour price which is great, so you don’t need to worry about paying for things.

Like everyone else in the room on our sunrise trekking tour, I was nervous. That goes without saying. But it’s that nervous excitement when you know know you’re about to do something incredible.

Hiking up Mount Batur for sunrise

We didn’t set off trekking up Mount Batur until 4:30am, and by that time everyone was ready and raring to go.

Our trek started from the villa and took us through a tiny village before we got to the bottom of Mt Batur.

As I looked up, I couldn’t help but feel it was going to be a struggle to climb it in an hour and a half to get to the top for sunrise, but all our guides said we’d be able to do it. After all, this was the Mount Batur sunrise hike – getting to the top for sunrise was a must!

What they didn’t say was that they’d set a furious pace to get us to there! When I say it’s a fast pace, I mean it’s a real fast pace. It’s doable, but it is a proper leg burn. You have been warned!

Benches, Mount Batur

Trekking through the forest at Mount Batur

The trek started off going through a forest on the lower slopes of Mount Batur, and with only a torch to light the way all I could concentrate on was putting one foot in front of the other. When you’re trekking through the forests it’s almost pitch black.

However, once we broke through the forest on the mid-slope the volcano of Mount Batur opened out before us. As I looked up I could still make out the tiny specks of stars across the inky sky, and the faint outline of Mount Agung , the taller of the two mountains, was behind us.

With sweat streaming from my face, I turned around to see Chloe and Emily, the two awesome travel bloggers I was hiking up Mount Batur with, powering on, a fierce look of determination of their faces. They weren’t going to be defeated by the Mt Batur sunrise hike that’s for sure.

As we were climbing up, I spoke to Adi, our tour guide, and he said 98% of people make it to the top. True to his word, I only saw one person turn around, pain and disappointment on their face. This means that you’ll be able to do it too!

All the guides are fantastic at seeing who needs help and encouragement. They really are there to help you out.

Views from Mount Batur

Once we made it to the top of Mount Batur, everyone silently walked off in search of their own spot to watch the sun rise.

Chloe, Emily and I found a little bench and sat down, all of us elated that we summitted Batur, that sense of achievement that we’d just climbed the 1,717m of an active volcano, all before breakfast too.

We did it, we climbed Mount Batur and it felt damn good too.

Standing at the top of Mount Batur

Do you get food hiking Mount Batur?

Yes you do! After we had that magic moment of watching the sun rise, we went off in search of some food.

Our guide Adi was waiting for us with little boxes of breakfast. This contained an orange, a banana, and a couple of slices of bread. “Adi, I thought were we having eggs for breakfast?” I piped up.

“Oh, for the eggs you have to follow me!”

Adi then led us toward the volcanic steam billowing from the side of Mount Batur.

There, in a crack in the rocks, were a bunch of eggs cooking away in the volcanic steam. As far as boiled eggs go, this was an extra special way to do them!

Hiking down Mount Batur

Getting back down the volcano was a lot easier and quicker than hiking up Mount Batur that’s for sure.

We took a different way down, and with soft volcanic sand under foot I found it a lot easier just to run down. I was still on such a high that I’d just done the Mt Batur sunrise hike so I still had a lot of energy to burn off.

I would say the majority of other people walk it though. And with no time delays you really can take it a lot easier than on the climb up. Whereas it takes about an hour and a half to climb up Mount Batur for sunrise, you can walk down in well under an hour.

mount batur sunrise hike tour

Mount Batur Hot Springs

Once we got back to the villa where we had more coffee (again, needed!), I looked around at everyone else who had just climbed Mount Batur. Even though a lot of people seemed wrecked, everyone was so happy that they had done it, all smiling and laughing.

As a little treat to ourselves, we added on a visit to Toya Devasya , a volcanic spa just a short 10 minute drive from the villa.

With Lake Batur and Mount Agung in the background, you couldn’t ask for a prettier setting, and it was just so relaxing floating around in the hot pools and feeling the aches and pains from trekking Mount Batur melt away.

The hot springs really do cap off a perfect day and I’d really recommend adding this onto your tour. It’s a tiny bit more expensive but it’s 100% worth it in my eyes.

mount batur sunrise hike tour

Is the Mt Batur sunrise hike difficult?

Waking up at 2am and climbing up a volcano before sunrise is never going to be easy, but I can honestly say that it’s such an amazing and rewarding experience. It’s without a doubt one of the best things you can do in Bali and so different from the temples of Borobudur and the islands of Raja Ampat .

If you’re looking for something that’s equal parts challenging and exhilarating, you really can’t go wrong with the Mount Batur sunrise hike. It’s something you really won’t regret!

I’d say if you have a average level of fitness, you’ll definitely be able to hike up Mount Batur. As I said, only 1-2% of people don’t make it to the top, so those are pretty good odds!

How much does the Mount Batur tour cost?

mt batur tour bali

A full day tour (2am till 2pm) climbing Mount Batur with GetYourGuide costs £49/$58. This includes all transport costs, guides, breakfast and snacks. This also includes visiting the Toya Devasya hot springs and the coffee plantation tour too. As I’ve already mentioned, the coffee plantation tour is a really nice addition.

Another really popular tour is the Volkswagen jeep safari tour on the volcano itself. This is where you drive around the volcano in a jeep for the day taking in the sights.

Here are a few other tours for you:

Top Tips for Mount Batur trekking

  • Make sure you take lots of water – For a trek like this, you really do sweat out more than you can take in. If you don’t drink lots of water it won’t be long till you’re dehydrated with a huge headache. If you can carry it, try to take at least two litres water. Trust me, you’ll be thankful you’ve got it with you.
  • Have good COMFORTABLE shoes – I’m not going to say you need hiking boots, but if you’ve got weak ankles then having extra protection around your ankles will help you on the way down. I will say it’s extremely important to have comfortable shoes though. If not, you’ll just get blisters and end up hating the Mount Batur sunrise trekking.
  • Bring a Bite Away pen – Mosquito bites are part and parcel of travelling throughout Southeast Asia. No matter how much insect repellant I use I still get bitten by mosquitoes. That’s why I always travel with a Bite Away pain relief pen now. I’ve been using this product for over a year now and even though it doesn’t prevent mosquito bites, it is so effective at taking the pain away. This is really useful for when you’re hiking as one zap on the pen and you can carry on walking again! I recommend this product and you can buy it here .

bite away pen

  • Take layers – Obviously waking up at 2am it can be fairly chilly, so it’s a good idea to have thin removable layers so you can strip off once you’re hot. I’d recommend bringing a very thin cardigan or hoodie with you.
  • Suck on sweets – The trek up Mount Batur is extremely fast and you don’t stop for water breaks all that often, so take a packet of sweets with you to suck on. Sucking on a sweet tricks your saliva glands into producing more spit preventing your mouth from drying out. Bit like drinking but without drinking.
  • Bring a little money – At the top of Mount Batur you can buy drinks like coke, coffee and hot chocolate, so if you didn’t bring any water make sure you’ve got a little money to buy something at the top!

This is so awesome Macca! I wanted to do this hike so badly when I was in Ubud a couple of weeks ago but was so exhausted catching up on work that I thought the 2am wake-up call would do me in Next time, for sure!

Argh Casey, you 100% should’ve done this hike! It’s without a doubt one of the best day hikes I’ve ever done and that’s saying something! As you said, there’s always next time when you’re back in Bali again!

I still regret not hiking the mount batur when I was on Bali. Well, for sure next time! x

✔️ Climbing Mount Batur Quick Guide

👉  What You Need to Know:  Due to the “Volcano Association” (tourism mafia) you need a guide or tour to be allowed to hike Mt. Batur.  🌋  The Best Mt. Batur Sunrise Tour  →  Check Rates & Dates Here!   🚗  If You Don’t Want to Trek:  You can take a Jeep tour to Mt. Batur’s peak instead of climbing.  🛵  How to Get Around Kintamani:  There is no Grab in Kintamani, instead I recommend taking a guided tour that includes transport or renting a scooter and driving yourself to get around. For scooter rentals in Bali, I recommend Bikago .  🥾  How Hard is the Hike?  Mount Batur is a moderate trek that is 500 meters in elevation and should take 1-2 hours to complete depending on your fitness level. If you don’t want to hike, you can pay to take a motorbike taxi 4/5 of the way up.

All About Mount Batur – The Most Famous Volcano in Bali

Climbing Mount Batur for sunrise is the most popular volcano trek in Bali , and it’s the second tallest peak after Mount Agung. Every day, hundreds of tourists make the trip to Kintamani, starting the hike up to Batur’s caldera in the middle of the night to see the best sunrise in all of Bali. Although Mount Batur is considered an active volcano, you won’t see any lava there. Gunung Batur hasn’t erupted since the year 2000, and while it’s monitored for volcanic activity, Mount Batur is generally considered safe for climbing.

👉 The Government Trying to Shut Down Mt. Batur: In June 2023, the Balinese government announced that they would be shutting down all volcano hikes in Bali, due to poor behavior from tourists – However, this new legislation hasn’t come to pass yet, so you should climb Mount Batur while it’s still open to the public.

Hikers on a Kintamani Volcano Tour of Mt. Batur in Bali wait for sunrise at the peak of the mountain. Their headlamps cut through the fog and create beams of light.

My Top Tips for Climbing Mt. Batur

✅ be aware you need a guide to climb mount batur dur to the volcano “association” (mafia).

While Mt. Batur is a relatively easy hike, you still  need  to have a guide! This is because the locals have banded together to form a “Volcano Association” that enforces the mandatory guide rule. Every week, new stories come out from tourists who tried to bypass the guide rule and sneak onto the mountain, resulting in them being harassed, and sometimes physically barred entry to Mt. Batur. I asked our guide about this regulation, and he had three answers for why tourists need a guide to hike Mt. Batur:

  • Preservation of the mountain:  Mt. Batur is considered a sacred site by the Balinese people, and having a guide ensures no bad behavior (there’ve recently been some issues with tourists stripping down and filming themselves on Bali’s volcanos).
  • Tourist safety:  There was an incident where a tourist fell into Mt. Baturs caldera, and unfortunately passed away, because no one knew they were there, so no search party was enacted.
  • The Volcano Association wants tourists to pay fees for guides:  Association is another word for “mafia” while you’re traveling. Basically, the tourist mafia is when a bunch of locals get together and decide an activity  cannot  be done without a guide (even if there’s no reason the activity needs a guide).

✅ Know You Can Take a Jeep or a Motorbike Taxi if You Don’t Want to Hike to the Top

If you’re not down for a pre-dawn uphill trek, you can always take a motorbike taxi or a Jeep tour up Mount Batur. ➡️ Check Out Batur Jeep Tours! 👉  Note!  While the Jeep tours drive all the way to the viewpoint, if you take a motorbike taxi up to the caldera, you still need to hike 10-15 minutes uphill from the parking area to the summit.

Blogger Katie Caf gives a thumbs up at the camera wrapped in a woolen blanket and coat on the peak of Mt. Batur, Kintamani's volcano hike.

✅ Know it’s COLD at the Top of the Mt. Batur

You’re already at a higher elevation in Kintamani, and by the time you reach Batur’s Caldera for the sunrise viewport you’re at 1,717 meters (5,633 feet) elevation. This, coupled with the fact that the hike is done before sunrise, makes for a  cold  trip! At the summit, where everyone is just sitting and waiting for sunrise is the coldest part, there are vendors renting out blankets for 50K IDR. I rented one and was still freezing cold.

✅ Take a Combo Tour That Includes Other Activities

There are a ton of cool things to do in and around the Kintamani area besides the Volcano tour. Since the Mt. Batur volcano tour is usually done at sunrise, there are many tours available that include add-on activities for later in the day.

🌋 Top Add-On Tours & Activities in Kintamani:

  • ATV in the Lava Fields + Volcano Tour
  • White Water Rafting Tour in Ubud + Volcano Tour
  • Ubud Day Trip With Swing + Volcano Tour

✅ If You’re Hiking, Bring a Spare Shirt – Your Sweat from the Hike Freezes at the Top of the Volcano

Our tour guide told us to bring an extra shirt – I thought it was a language barrier mistranslation and he just meant to bring a jacket. Nope! It’s recommended you bring a spare change of shirts for Mt. Batur if you’re climbing. This is because you will sweat a lot during the 1-2 hour up-hill trek to the sunrise viewpoint – Once you’re at the top, aka the coldest part of the mountain, all that sweat will freeze while you wait for sunrise. We were up at the top of the caldera for around an hour, so likely not enough time to suffer from hypothermia, but bringing a spare shirt made the sunrise a  lot more comfortable  to sit through.

✅ Know That There are Tons of Different Hiking Routes to Reach the Viewpoint

Mount Batur is huge – There are many different starting points for the trek around the base of the volcano.  For example, if you start from Kintamani, you will likely take a different route to reach the viewpoint than those who embarked from Ubud, Kuta, or Canggu. Some routes are a little bit more well-paved, but overall, it’s about the same hiking difficulty for all of the paths – In the end, everyone gets the same amazing sunset.

✅ Try to Visit Mount Batur During the Dry Season

If possible, try to plan your visit to Mount Batur during Bali’s Dry Season, which runs from May to October.  Always remember that Bali is a tropical destination, so the weather will be a little bit unpredictable. When we visited Mount Batur, it was the height of the dry season, but we still had a cloudy/foggy day. Later, I was talking to the guide, and he told me that we hiked on the only foggy day all month! So, while it’s unlikely to get bad weather during the “good” season, you still need to go with the flow a bit when it comes to Bali weather.

A basket full of egg and banana sandwiches, with two unpeeled bananas and a candy bar. You get a no-frills breakfast of boiled bananas, boiled eggs, and candy bars on all Kintamani Volcano Tours of Mt. Batur!

✅ Breakfast is Usually Included in The Tour – But Don’t Expect Much!

All of the tours for Mount Batur say something along the lines of “Private breakfast while watching the sunrise” – Sounds amazing, right? Well…Yes and no.

We did get a hot breakfast as we waited for the sun to rise on our Batur, but it was made up of boiled eggs and boiled banana mashed into some white toast 😅 – Not quite the romantic picture you’d imagine. We did the hiking tour, so all of the water, eggs, bread, etc that you’re enjoying has to be trekked up there by someone. So really, when you think about it, it’s pretty amazing they were able to get breakfast to us at all!

✅ Bring Small Bills on Your Hike for Blanket Rentals, Snacks, Coffee & Tea

I paid 50K to rent a blanket while we were waiting for sunrise, (I was freezing!), and there were also small snacks and hot beverages for sale at the lookout point.

✅ Don’t Climb Mount Batur on a Weekend – It Gets MASSIVELY Crowded!

All of the volcano hikes in Bali and the outer islands are massive tourist attractions that pull hundreds and thousands of visitors every day. So, no matter which day of the week you go to hike Mount Batur, you can expect there to be a crowd. However, these crowds are the worst during the weekends – If you could plan your trip to Kintamani so you’re hiking the volcano on a weekday, you’ll have a little bit of a better time.

✅ Know You’re Starting the Hike in Pitch Black for Sunrise

When we set off at 3:45 AM for our Mount Batur hike it was pitch black out, and there were no street lights on the footpaths leading to the caldera.  The headlamps our tour guide provided us with were  essential  for the hike .  We took a private tour, so a bit more on the higher-end side, and the headlamps we were provided worked great. I’ve done some cheaper sunrise hikes in Indonesia where the headlamps they give you are basically just for show – If you can bring your own headlamp, just in case, that would be best. If you think a phone flashlight is enough to do the hike, think again! I tried to use my phone’s flashlight to add to the light from my headlamp and it was something like 1/10th the strength.

✅ Maybe Budget Two Days in Kintamani Due to Unpredictable Weather

The weather in Bali is unpredictable, and on my first time climbing Mount Batur it was too foggy to see the sunrise. The next day, however, the skies were perfectly clear. There’s nothing more frustrating than waking up at 2 AM to hike a volcano for a sunrise you can’t see! When we came back down from the volcano, our guide told us that we had been unlucky enough to climb the volcano on the only foggy day  all month  – So while bad weather at Batur is rare, it does happen. If you want to get better odds of seeing the sunrise at Mount Batur, I recommend staying in Kintamani for a few days.

✅ Bring a Sarong and an Offering to Enter the Sacred Temple

Did you know that there’s a Balinese temple 20 meters into a cave on the side of Mount Batur Volcano? There is! And you can visit Mt. Batur’s Volcano, with a few conditions: 1) You need to bring a sarong (both men and women) – Even if your legs are already covered by your clothing. 2) You also need to bring a Balinese offering to leave at the temple in order to enter.

Rocks from the site on Mt. Batur where the Balinese people source medicinal crystals.

✅ Don’t Forget Mount Batur is a Balinese Sacred Site

I n addition to the temple, all of Mount Batur Volcano, and in fact all of the Volcanos in Bali, are considered sacred sites in the Hindu religion. Our guide explained that the volcano is sacred because it’s believed to be closer to heaven – So tons of rituals are conducted on and around the caldera. After we sumitted Mt. Batur, our guide also took us to a site on the side of the mountain where the locals search through gravel for medicinal crystals. Our guide says that his grandfather has a crystal from this site, and when someone gets sick they will soak the crystal in water and rub it on afflicted areas.

Hikers sit on a mountainside on a Kintamani Volcano tour of Mt. Batur in Bali as the sun rises.

✅ Consider Leaving Even  Earlier  to Get a Good Spot

Sunrise in Bali is around 6:20 AM – We got to our hiking spot early, around 5:00, and were some of the first people there. There were limited seats at the viewpoint, and by 5:45 seats with a clear view were starting to fill up . We started the hike at 3:45 AM, if you’re with a group that has varied hiking abilities, I recommend leaving early. Most groups start the hike around 4 AM from Kintamani.

✅ Know it’s a Moderately Difficult Hike

The hike to Mt. Batur’s caldera is a straight shot up, and it usually takes hikes between 45 minutes to 2 hours to complete the entire thing.  It took us 1 hour and 15 minutes to do the hike, and all three people in my party (including the guide) were sweating heavily by the time we reached the top. Guides budget 2 hours for the hike as a default.

💪 I would classify the Mt. Batur hike as an intermediate-level hike: Some people will find it hard, others easy, depending on their fitness level.

💡  Tip!  If you don’t want to do the steep uphill hike, you can always take a Jeep tour.

Mt. Batur volcano photographed at sunrise.

How Much Does it Cost to Hike Mount Batur?

The cheapest I have seen a Mount Batur sunrise hike is around 400K IDR ($25) – This is for joining an open tour, meaning there will be one guide and a ton of hikers.  The cheapest tours don’t include breakfast or transport, you’re basically just paying entrance in the form of a “guide” because everyone is required to have a guide at Mount Batur. Most of the time, hiking Mount Batur is 500K IDR ($32), and includes a breakfast at the summit for a smaller group tour. For a private tour of Mt Batur, the overall cost will probably be between $100-200, depending on which provider you book it through.

If you’d like a private guide, the rate is based on how many people are in your party. I recommend getting a private guide if you want to do any ad-ons like walking the caldera’s rim or visiting the Balinese temple. There are lots of ad-ons you can do for a Mt. Batur tour that change the price. For example, if you want to take the Jeep up instead of hike, that’s an extra expense. Many tour providers also offer options with transportation from Ubud, or add-on tours like white water rafting you can do after your tour.

My Experience Trekking Mt. Batur for Sunrise

We started our Kintamani volcano tour at 3:30 AM with a cup of 3-in-1 sachet coffee and our guide passing us 2 water bottles, each. We had a later start than most because we decided to spend a few days in Kintamani to see the sights, but if you’re starting from Ubud, Canggu, Kuta, etc., expect to depart for your tour at 1 or 2 AM.

By 3:45 AM, we set off on our trek!

It was  absolutely freezing  on the mountain in the middle of the night, but once we started the uphill ascent the movement kept us nice and warm. Our guide gave us the option of a short, medium, or long trek – We chose the medium because we wanted to do a walk on the volcano’s rim.

Since we were departing from Kintamani, we took a lesser-traveled path than the one most travelers take. If you’re starting your tour from Ubud, you will be beginning your trek from the West side of the volcano – On the West side, there are larger and more nicely paved roads, since it gets  far  more tourists.

We were starting our trek on the South-East side of the volcano, and for the most part, the path was unmarked. Many people talk about how you “don’t need a guide” for Mt. Batur, but for the route we took, I was happy we had him!

The path we took was steeper than the usual Mt. Batur path – Our guide gave us the option to walk on the more well-paved road instead, but that road was shared with the motorbike taxis zooming up the mountain, so we chose to stick to the walking path. The bonus of taking the more remote trek up the mountain, and also for leaving a bit early, is that we were the only other people I saw on our whole hike up!

A wild Balinese cat, also called a sunda leopard cat, spotted in the dark while on a Kintamani Volcano Tour to Mt. Batur's caldera before sunrise. The cat is grey with spots.

The hike was mostly done in the dark, and the woods, so it’s not that scenic – The high point of our trek was when we saw a wild Balinese cat hunting on the volcano. Our guide called it a “Luwuk”, which is the animal that the famous  Balinese Cat Poop Coffee  is made from – This cat looked completely different from the Luwuks I’ve seen in  coffee plantations around Bali – Later, we googled the cat and found it was actually a Sunda Leopard Cat! It was an unexpected treat to see a wild animal on our volcano trek I never even knew existed in Bali.

We reached the Caldera’s viewpoint at around 5 AM, so the trek took us an hour and fifteen minutes. We had chosen to take the steeper and faster of the two paths, and our guide made a big fuss that this was the “fastest he had ever hiked with foreigners!” … But, I’m not sure how much I believe that haha. I know some very fit and tall guys who did the Batur trek in around 45 minutes!

At 5 AM, the viewpoint was pretty much empty and we had our choice of seats. As more people reached the summit, the viewpoint got more and more crowded. By 6 AM, most of the seats were full.  I was freezing the entire hour we were waiting for the sunrise!

mount batur sunrise hike tour

Our guide had advised us to bring a second shirt, and I was so grateful he did because the undershirt I was wearing under my puffer coat was soaked with sweat after the trek. Even after changing into a dry shirt + wearing a puffer coat, I was still so incredibly cold that I rented a blanket from one of the women at the summit for 50K IDR.

Unfortunately, our sunrise was lackluster.  The iconic Mt. Batur sunrise is above the clouds, but unfortunately for us, we were inside the clouds instead! The fog was as thick as pea soup, and we couldn’t see a thing – It was still cool after the sunrise to explore Batur’s caldera and see nothing but white fog all around us. Luckily, we were staying in Kintamani for a few days, so we got to see a gorgeous sunrise over Mt. Batur the next day.

What to Bring

Truthfully you don’t need much for a Mt. Batur trek, snacks and water are available on the mountain, and blankets are available to rent if you get cold. Here are some things I recommend to consider bringing:

  • Jacket:  Carry an extra layer for the Mount Batur sunrise trek. You’ll likely shed it as you warm up during the hike but may need it again at the summit while waiting for the sunrise.
  • Extra Shirt:  It’s cold at the summit while you wait for sunrise, and your sweat from the exertion of the hike up will freeze. This poses a risk of hypothermia, but really it’s just uncomfortable. I recommend bringing an extra base layer to change into.
  • Headlamp:  While Mount Batur sunrise trekking tours offer basic headlamps, they don’t always work. I travel with my own after getting a few duds.
  • Good Shoes:  While regular sneakers are good enough, sturdy hiking shoes are preferable for the Mount Batur hike. Hiking sandals are an option, but avoid flip flops, considering slippery gravel and steep inclines or declines.
  • Poncho:  If you visit during the rainy season, especially from December to February, consider bringing a rain jacket as a precaution. However, I wouldn’t recommend trying to climb during this season because if it’s cloudy you can’t see the views.
  • Camera With Flash:  If you have a small and lightweight point-and-shoot camera that includes flash that would be perfect for this pre-dawn hike.
  • Drone:  If you have a drone, Mt. Batur is the perfect place to set it off to get aerial views of the volcano’s caldera.

Get up at 2am to climb an active volcano? Although that sounds slightly insane, the Mount Batur sunrise trek in Bali, Indonesia was one of the best experiences of my trip… And there were many to compete with including living in a local village , getting dunked in a holy water temple and gorging myself senseless on delectable Balinese food . Ever since arriving in Indonesia , hiking Mount Batur (also called Gunung Batur) had been high on my Southeast Asia bucket list . It was just as mesmerising as seeing Java’s Borobudur Temple at sunrise , plus the excursion made me appreciate my surroundings all the more.

Although I was solo travelling in Bali , I did the sunrise Mount Batur hike with a friend who was visiting from Australia . As a solo traveller , I’ll do most things by myself: go to restaurants, the cinema, a new continent… You name it! But, not being especially sporty, I sometimes need a push when it comes to physical challenges. Going with a friend meant we could support each other and I’d be less likely to sleep through my alarm and miss the whole thing… It’s happened before!

Orange sky over mountains

Hiking Mount Batur is one of the most popular things to do near Ubud so we planned to do it while based there. However, a small spanner was thrown in the works when we had a scooter crash driving back from Lempuyang Temple in the east of Bali. For the rest of our time in Ubud , neither of us could walk very well or bend our knees. Kinda crucial for the whole hiking thing! So we decided to climb Mount Batur at the end of Josh’s trip instead, when we got back from Nusa Penida . However, we ended up staying in Canggu for two days which is a bit further from the volcano. This meant an even earlier pick-up! From Canggu , we were the first picked up and the last dropped off. We toured the whole island collecting and dropping people along the way. We spent a total of 5 extra hours in the car that the Ubud hikers missed.

Bottom line, if you can hike Mt Batur from Ubud, do!

So, where is Mount Batur?

The volcano is located in the northeast of Bali in the Kintamani District.

From Ubud in central Bali, the drive takes around 1 hour to the starting point. From Canggu/Seminyak, it takes around 2 hours by car.

Batur background

Mt Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active volcano in Bali that first erupted 30,000 years ago and last erupted in the year 2000. In comparison, Bali’s most active volcano, Mount Agung, last erupted in 2019. As these stats suggest, it’s far safer to explore Batur than Agung, plus the hike is much easier. Mount Batur is located at 5,600m above sea level with an altitude of 1717 metres. As I’ll mention later, this doesn’t mean you need to trek the whole distance because most companies start at Toyabungakah which is already elevated. Batur is a caldera volcano with a collapsed top and a crater lake inside. If that wasn’t scenic enough, you can still see blackened lava trails from when the eruption in 2000.

Mount Batur hiking info

There’s a longer and shorter route; most tour companies will take you on the shorter hike. This is 7km there and back, taking around 1 hour to the summit from the starting point.

Walking group

Honestly, it wasn’t that hard! If I say it, it’s gotta be true 😉 If you’re asking yourself ‘how hard is hiking Mount Batur?’ I wouldn’t stress too much. I read so many mixed reports beforehand, saying it was everything from ‘super easy’ to the hardest thing someone’s ever done. It clearly depends on the person but I wouldn’t even put it in the top 30 hardest things I’ve done, and I have no proper trekking experience. The worst bit is being up that early, plus how slippy it is on the way down. Getting up was a bit of cardio and I was sweaty even at 4am, but it could have been much worse. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s dark on the way up. Your guides will have torches but you should stay alert and keep an eye on your footing. It’s well worth the effort to experience one of Bali’s best hikes !

Mount Batur sunrise tours

These tours include return transport, breakfast and the services of our guides. It was worth it for them alone: they were lovely and so helpful, guiding my every footstep when it was slippy. I’d have had no idea where to go or what to do in the dark without them. If coming from Ubud, you’ll be picked up at 2.30am . As we were coming from Canggu, we were picked up just after midnight… an extra 2 hours sleeping is another reason you should do the trek from Ubud! You can’t do the sunrise Mount Batur trek without a guide. It would be too dangerous. Also, there’s no public transport connecting Batur with the popular tourist bases. The trekking tours are affordable so there’s no reason not to take one. I can vouch for GetYourGuide tours:

Hiking Mount Batur Bali crater at sunrise

Which is the best tour to take?

Since there are several on offer, I would suggest:

  • The OG Batur trekking tour inc breakfast ($55) – if it’s just Batur you want to see and you’re travelling on a budget, this is the tour to choose. It’s the one I took and we stopped off at a coffee plantation for some much-needed caffeine on the way home!
  • Sunrise Batur tour plus hot springs ($65) – what could be better than relaxing in natural bubbling springs to reward yourself after the hike? If I were doing it again, I’d pick this one.
  • Sunrise by Jeep and hot springs ($72) – if you think the trek might be too challenging, never fear. This option lets you see sunrise from the top without having to climb.

What to expect on a Mt Batur sunrise hike

The first thing you should know? It gets seriously cold! At almost 2,000 metres elevation, it’s chilly in the early hours of the morning. But many travellers forget, thinking Bali is eternally warm. You can expect temperates of 8-15° Celsius at the summit. Make sure to pack something warm . I barely own anything warm in Asia so I brought a light jumper (pictured). You don’t need thermals; just an extra layer that you can stash in your backpack when the sun’s up. Another thing to know before climbing Mount Batur is that it’ll only ever be as good as the sunrise. If you get a cloudy day , you might see nothing. Don’t panic, though; as I’ll mention in a moment, there’s more to do at the top than just see the sunrise.

Mount Batur at sunrise

What to expect during the hike

People climb every day so expect to find it busy on the track. Depending on the season, it may be even busier in peak tourism months. Our guides told us there wasn’t a lot of point going fast because we’d hit ‘traffic’ AKA the group in front. So I shouldn’t have worried about being the slowest in the group. There’s no advantage to being too speedy!

Steam rising from canyon

Saying that, you can’t go too slowly… sunrise won’t wait for you! We started hiking shortly after 4am , and sunrise was at 6am . You’ll want to be there a bit before to get comfy and start snapping the dreamy orange skies, so you need to keep a moderate pace. Luckily, you don’t need to worry about setting your own pace because the guides are very knowledgeable and take care of that. They won’t let you miss sunrise!

What to expect at the summit

Well, this really depends on the weather conditions on the day of your climb. We were rewarded with dreamy pink and orange skies which gave way to clear views of Mount Agung, shrouded in low-hanging clouds. If it’s cloudy, sunrise may not be the main event. I assumed we’d soak up the views and head back down but actually, there’s more to experience when hiking Mount Batur. I loved learning about the volcano and its thermal activities. While it’s currently classed as an active volcano, it isn’t currently erupting. As well as seeing Bali’s largest canyon, we received a good geography lesson. You’ll see plumes of steam coming from crevices in the rock faces and our guides explained what causes these, demonstrating that you can boil an egg over them. As you can imagine, it felt amazing to warm our hands over them. Later in the day, this would certainly not be necessary – it was already getting hot as we made our way down.

Monkey

The way down

I’d wondered about the difficulty of the sunrise Mount Batur hike but I hadn’t considered coming down. It was so slippy and our guide had to patiently hold my hand most of the way! On the plus side, I was fascinated to see the surrounding black, rocky landscape that we hadn’t been able to see on the way up in the d ark. This is the product of historical eruptions that have characterised the landscape and destroyed other signs of life. It looked like another planet… Or at least what I imagine one to look like! The journey down took around 45 minutes , quicker than the way up.

Blackened lava

After the hike

After our sunrise hike up Mount Batur, we stopped at a coffee factory. Being given a free mini coffee overlooking amazing views isn’t exactly first-degree torture but I was falling asleep sitting up after our early start!

Coffee plantation Bali

However, as I said, amazing views! We drank our coffee and gratefully climbed back into the van to head home. We returned to Canggu at 2pm, desperate to eat and sleep. The breakfast included on the tour was decent: a mini pancake and some boiled eggs and bread, but it was well past lunchtime and we were starving again. Brunch at my favourite Canggu restaurant then a relaxed day by the pool was in order. Hoorah!

Our itinerary

Here’s a little insight into what our day looked like. Check your tour operator’s schedule as I can’t guarantee it will be exactly the same… 1am-2.30am: hotel pick-up 3.30am: arrive at Toyabungkah village 5.30am: arrive at the Mount Batur sunrise viewpoint 6am: explore the caldera area 7am: begin your descent 8.30am: depart by car from Toyabungkah village 9.30am: stop at a Balinese coffee plantation or hot springs depending on the tour you’ve booked 11am (ish): drop-offs start at Ubud hotels 12pm – rest of day: lay around triumphantly considering how much you’ve achieved before others have even woken up!!

Best time to hike Mount Batur

The dry season is easily the best time for Mount Batur trekking. The drier months from May to October are the safest time to trek because the terrain won’t be wet or slippy. Provided it hasn’t been raining, other times of the year can be fine, too. Don’t be immediately deterred if rain is forecast: it may be just for an hour or so later in the day. Generally, it’s morning rain you should worry about for the sunrise hike up Mount Batur. If the last few mornings have been clear, you should be fine. Check with local guides in the days before your trek.

What to pack for trekking Mount Batur

  • Hiking shoes – you don’t need proper boots, some battered old trainers will do
  • A warm layer while you wait for sunrise at the top
  • Enough water – remember you have to carry it so only take what you need. Around 750ml to a litre will do
  • Suncream/sunglasses – pack these for when the sun comes up
  • Plasters/band-aids (whatever you call them) in case of blisters
  • Camera – to capture your hike. Pack this away until the top; you won’t capture much in the dark plus it’s hard to hike carrying a camera or even with it around your neck.
  • Snacks – I bought some cereal bars and I was still so hungry by the end despite eating the breakfast provided by our guides. My body is clearly not used to 700m hikes before dawn!
  • Swimwear if you are doing a tour with a hot springs stop
  • Money for tipping your guide – if they give good service which I suspect they will. Around 50-70 IDR (around $5) is enough.

To save money on accommodation, I use Trusted Housesitters , a website that connects homeowners going away and travellers who can sit their homes & pets. For activities, I use GetYourGuide and Viator as they both have a huge range of affordable tours. Need travel insurance ? I use True Traveller (for UK & Europe residents) since it’s affordable but covers everything you’d need including various activities, valuables and pre-existing conditions. Unlike some companies, they insure you if you’re already travelling / don’t yet have your flight home booked. Get a quote . For travel insurance for other nationalities, I recommend Hey Mundo and for long-term digital nomad travellers, I suggest Safety Wing . About Mount Batur Volcano

Mount Batur Volcano at sunrise

Mount Batur itself was formed thousands of years ago through a series of volcanic eruptions and it’s well-known that the caldera is one of the largest and most stunning in the world! It’s hard to believe that the magnificent landscapes we saw are the result of intense volcanic activity that occurred in the past.

Mount Batur has a recorded history of eruptions dating back to the early 1800s but one of the most significant eruptions took place in 1917 . When this happened a massive eruption led to the formation of a new cone within the caldera.

This eruption had a lasting impact on the surrounding areas, with lava flows covering nearby villages and altering the landscape dramatically.

Today, Mount Batur remains an active volcano; however , it’s under constant surveillance. Scientists and researchers monitor its activity closely to ensure your hike will be safe and eruption-free!

Overview: Mount Batur Volcano Sunrise Trek

Difficulty Level: Intermediate Time: 3:30 am – 7 am Cost: IDR 100,000 (entrance fee only)

igoa-adventure, Mt Batur sunrise hike- holding summit sign

When planning a sunrise hike to the top of Mount Batur Volcano, you’ll need to consider a few things.

  • How will you be visiting Mount Batur ? Alone, with a guide or on an organised tour
  • At what time will you be hiking Mount Bature? The sunrise is the most popular but there are also day treks, combination tours , 4×4 tours etc.
  • You need to think about what to wear and what to pack , remember you’ll be hiking through the night if you choose to visit for sunrise!
  • Transport, fees and what refreshments you’ll need are essential to planning a successful and fun hike.
  • Consideration of where you’re going to stay during your visit is also crucial.

To access Mount Batur, you’ll typically need to pay an entrance fee, although I have heard of people trekking without paying. The cost of the entrance ticket can vary depending on several factors such as nationality and age.

International tourists usually choose to hike with a guide or on a tour but if you prefer to hike alone you’ll only need to pay the entrance fee of IDR 100,000 ($6.50).

The entrance fee is usually collected at the entrance point or visitor centre of Mount Batur Geological Park.

It’s best to purchase tickets ahead of time , especially if you’re planning to hike at sunrise so you don’t have any issues on hike day. You’ll also know where to start your hike from, as remember it will be dark!

Best Time To Hike Mount Batur Volcano?

The best time to hike Mount Batur volcano in Bali, Indonesia is generally during the dry season, which runs from April to September. During this time, you can expect clear skies and lower chances of rainfall, providing better visibility and more enjoyable hiking conditions.

What To Pack For Climbing Mount Batur

You’ll want to ensure you’ve packed the correct gear to make the most out of your trip. In your day pack make sure you’ve packed the following:

  • a packed lunch
  • a windproof jacket

Don’t forget to pack snacks and lots of fresh water , it’s easy to get dehydrated on this hike. Most sunrise hikes will include breakfast but ensure you have additional snacks to have along the way as the breakfast isn’t too filling!

It wasn’t too cold at the start of our trek and as we got going we soon warmed up. However, it can get chilly once you reach the summit and have stopped before the sun comes up, so make sure you bring enough layers.

⭐ Pro tip >> Put your shorts under your walking trousers so you can remove them with ease if you start getting too hot/cold .

Mt Batur volcano and Kintamani Bali

In all honesty, it’s not essential to wear hiking boots , some of the people in our group had trainers. That said, it is easier in hiking boots as they have a better grip. If you are wearing trainers you’ll want to make sure they have good grip. The path does turn to gravel towards the top.

Towards the top of this hike, especially the way we went, the trail does become more demanding and so if you have back or knee trouble a good lightweight walking pole can help push you along.

Where To Stay Near Mount Batur Volcano?

The perfect location is at the foot of Mount Batur Volcano in the town of Kintamani. It’s close to the entrance and walking trails . Here are 3 great options for your stay in Kintamani.

Kintamani Bali Bamboo Huts

Top 3 Places To Stay Near Mount Batur

👉 The Panorama Batur Cam p . Stunning views and cool little wooden huts. 👉 Triangle House . Similar to the above but with a little more privacy! 👉 Bukit Catu Bungalows . This one has a swimming pool, which would have been nice.

The Mount Batur Sunrise Hike: What To Expect

The ambience was nothing short of magical , heightened by the comforting presence of friends. As we stood there, spellbound, watching the sunrise paint its vibrant hues across the vast panorama of Mount Batur, I knew I was experiencing a moment that would etch itself into my memory forever.

The Journey To Kintamani

Before we started the hike we had to get to our hotel in Kintamani from Amed, a sleepy fishing village in the east . To be honest, our journey to Kintamani was an adventure in itself!

Bali Road Trip

To get to Kintamani, we had to scale another mountain. We were on our scooters, which did extremely well considering the incline (and decline).

We went high, so high in fact that we rode through clouds and felt the temperature change on our cheeks! The landscape was stunning with panoramic views ; we passed through a few small villages and farmlands before we reached the peak of the mountain.

Road to Kintamani

We did get a little lost , and ended up on some terrible, dangerous, rocky road before a local, who himself was struggling to get his truck out of a ditch, kindly told us we should turn around as there was a better road not too far away, and that this one was going to worse.

⭐ Pro tip >> I would stick to the sat nav and not try taking shortcuts, also make sure Google doesn’t decide to redirect you! More travel tips for first-time travellers here…

What Time To Start The Hike?

We started the climb at 3:30 am , woken to a gentle knocking on the door by our guide. After a quick coffee, we were off…

Depending on how you choose to hike Mount Batur your time will be impacted. For example, if you’re on a pre-arranged tour you’ll likely be getting up earlier to pick everyone up and get organised at the start before you begin climbing. There are also different routes to follow with varying lengths .

We started our hike directly from our hotel, so we didn’t need any time to reach the “official entrance”, nor did we need to purchase entrance tickets as we had done this ahead of time. So, 1.5 hours was enough time to reach the top just in time for sunrise, which was scheduled at 5:10 am.

The most popular route is from the official entrance and is a 5-kilometre trail. For this route, the walking time is usually 1.5-2 hours to reach the top. We spent an additional hour or so at the top exploring and having breakfast.

Mount Batur Sunrise Hike

igoa-adventure, Mt Batur sunrise hike on the ridge

As all volcano climbs seem to go, the Mount Batur hike started off easy and got progressively harder. The trail we followed took us along narrow farm lanes which were really pretty (only to be appreciated on the way down) slowly turning to volcanic sands and rock.

The incline began at this point and at times I was using my hands to help me scramble up the mountain ! It was harder and more off-piste than the Mount Ijen climb we had done previously but it was, I guess, an acceptable level of difficulty that most people would be able to achieve.

igoa-adventure, Mt Batur volcano view sunrise

The Views At Mount Batur

The main reason for doing such climbs is of course the views and the Mount Batur sunrise trek didn’t disappoint! With the sun popping up over the horizon we had beautiful hues of reds and oranges shooting up around us with clear views of the horizon.

The lake was on the left as we climbed and we could make out Mount Agung in the distance. The panoramic views were incredible and improved the higher we went!

Mt Batur Sunrise hike

On our final push through the foliage near the peak, we somehow managed to lose the group and ended up on a different path from everyone else. It wasn’t a problem, although we were by ourselves for sunrise (maybe it was meant to be). We found them a bit later on after sunrise.

From the top of the volcano, we could see the black lava fields below , left behind from an earlier eruption which blasted out of the south side of Mount Batur. The lake was sparkling below us and all of a sudden I noticed we were inside the crater of the previous super volcano. It was encasing us and as we stood central to the world, it was magical!

Breakfast At Mount Batur

After the sunrise hike, we found the group who were getting ready for breakfast which was included. It was lovely to eat the warm noodles and boiled egg while taking in the views.

A popular feature of most hikes is having your egg cooked in the hot springs , and although we never witnessed this I’m not sure that it was actually done during our tour. It was interesting to hear nevertheless!

Mount Batur Sunrise Hike Cost: Guided/Non-Guided/Tour

Without a guide.

The Mount Batur sunrise hike is one of the most popular hikes on the island of Bali and it’s easy to find guides to take you up, but it’s also worth knowing that even though you might be told you have to take a guide, it’s NOT illegal to go alone !

You will still need to pay entrance 100,000 IDR . (which is very affordable and a great option if you’re visiting Bali on a budget ).

Note: This pricing table is excluding transportation to and from Kintamani, the starting point is from Mount Batur Car Park.

With A Guide

In true backpacker style, we didn’t pre-book any tour for this adventure. We ended up organising everything once we were there which is doable if you’re not in a rush. Not recommended if you’re visiting on a 2-week holiday!

Since Bali is an affordable destination for tourists we only paid 150.000 IDR each in 2022 (this took some negotiating). It included the entrance fee, water, coffee in the morning and breakfast at the top.

So 50,000 IDR on top of the entrance fee (although at the time, the entrance fee was 80,000 IDR) and we were a group of 5 .

From that, we can work out that a guide will cost around IDR 250,000 per group.

Note: Be aware that breakfast doesn’t include a drink but they will give you one anyway! They will charge you extra, so be prepared to pay.

Hiring a guide is a positive way to support the local community and gain some insights into Mount Batur Geological Park. Your guide should be able to answer any questions you have about the area during your climb.

With A Tour

One of the most popular ways to climb Mount Batur , and even more so at sunrise is to book an organised tour. There are plenty of options to choose from with additional add-ons and features such as transport, visiting hot springs, ATV rides, 4×4 tours and sunset treks.

The below highlights three popular tours, prices and features included.

Visitors Tips & What To Watch Out For

👉 Start early: Begin your hike in the early hours of the morning to ensure you reach the summit in time for the sunrise. The hike usually takes around two hours, depending on your fitness level.

👉 Carry a headlamp: Since you’ll be hiking before sunrise, it’s crucial to have a headlamp or flashlight to navigate the trail safely.

👉 Pack essentials: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the hike. Snacks, such as energy bars or fruits, can also be helpful to keep your energy levels up. If you’re hiking during the wet season, pack a rain jacket or poncho!

👉 Engage a local guide: If you want more information. They are experienced and knowledgeable about the trail too, ensuring your safety.

👉 Choose a reputable tour operator: Research and select a reliable tour operator or agency that offers Mount Batur sunrise hikes. Read reviews, check their safety record, and compare prices before making a booking.

✔️ The two tour companies we use are Viator and Get Your Guide. They are great and highly recommended!

👉 Watch Out For The Monkeys & Dogs : There was a gang of stray dogs and a large family of macaque monkeys hell-bent on causing mischief. They like to steal your stuff so watch out!

👉 Respect the environment: Mount Batur is an important natural site, so it’s crucial to be mindful of your impact. Follow the designated trails, avoid littering, and leave no trace behind. Respect the local flora, fauna, and the volcanic environment.
