Don’t miss a stop at Cashiers’  Whiteside Mountain  to hike the two-mile loop trail that crosses the Highlands-Cashiers plateau. The trail straddles the Eastern Continental Divide, offering stunning views of the surrounding area atop what some geologists consider to be the oldest mountain in the world. Cashiers is home to the iconic early 20th century  High Hampton (formerly High Hampton Inn), which has been fully renovated and features a world-class golf course and the most stunning views in western North Carolina.

Also a short drive from Cashiers is  Whitewater Falls , one of the highest waterfalls east of  the Rockies at 411 Feet. Cashiers boasts several exciting annual events, including the  Rotary Arts and Crafts shows  in nearby  Sapphire ,  Groovin’ on the Green concert series featuring live music from Memorial to Labor Day, and the fall  Cashiers Valley Leaf Festival .

In the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Cashiers is home to  Panthertown Valley , considered to be the ‘Yosemite of the East’ and features some of the most scenic views in the United States. It is part of the Nantahala National Forest, and Panthertown features over 30 miles of mixed-use trails for hiking, biking, and outdoor pursuits.

Many people come to Cashiers as visitors and book a  vacation home or cottage and love it so much they end up purchasing real estate and calling it their home, or their home away from home.

Only a short drive from  Sylva and  Cullowhee , Cashiers is home to  dozens of waterfalls and has enough to make an entire weekend (and then some) out of a trip.

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau of N.C.

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that a little fresh air can provide a big mood boost . Add some soothing scenery and eye-popping views, and you're fully in the zone for a pure mountain high. Sound appealing? Then pack your bags and head for the Highlands-Cashiers plateau in western North Carolina , where the pristine mountain air and easy vacation charm is available in spades.

Just a few miles north of North Carolina's tiny border with Georgia, Highlands is a tiny hamlet sitting at 4,100 feet, making it one of the highest incorporated towns east of the Rockies. Cashiers, 10 miles to the east, is slightly lower in elevation but just as charming. Combined, the two towns offer boutique shopping, luxe accommodations, fine dining, and plenty of that storied Carolina ‘cue, providing plenty of restorative diversions. But that’s really all window dressing; the real attitude-adjusting ability awaits outside.

Nestled in the Nantahala National Forest that blankets the area’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Highlands, Cashiers, and the surrounding peaks and valleys offer a long list of ways to start or reaffirm a deep personal relationship with Mother Nature. Since their lofty perches also influence weather, keeping things cooler amid the South’s summer swelter, the perfect time to visit is late May through the end of summer.

Getting To & Around Highlands-Cashiers

The Highlands-Cashiers area is about 130 miles north of Atlanta and Hartsfield-Jackson airport (approximately a two-and-a-half-hour drive). It's about 70 miles southwest of Asheville , which also has an airport. With options for activity spread around and between the two towns, a car is essential for the full experience.

What to Do in Highlands-Cashiers

While the area’s bevy of outdoor adventures are the strongest draw, don’t shrug off a stroll down Highlands’ Main Street or the collections of shops in Cashiers. You'll have your pick of antique dealers, art galleries, gift shops, outdoor outfitters, and upscale clothing boutiques. But don’t linger; the mountains are calling.

Start with a stunner, a hike up Whiteside Mountain , a massive hunk of granite sitting between Highlands and Cashiers. The two-mile loop takes a bit of energy but isn’t strenuous and delivers ample rewards. At the 4,900-foot-high summit, you’re above a sheer rock face (one of the highest in the Eastern United States) and greeted by panoramic views of the Blue Ridge's sharper peaks transitioning to the soft, rounded hills of South Carolina’s Piedmont.

Those views can attract crowds. Avoid them on a far less-traveled path at the aptly named Secret Falls , a 50-foot glittering cascade that pours over a ledge. (The deep pool below may tempt you in for a dip but be warned: The water remains teeth-chattering cold year-round.) Silver Cove Falls , in Cashiers, is a sparkling gem that’s easy to access but usually not overrun.

You’re almost guaranteed solitude in Panthertown Valley , near Cashiers. The 6,300-acre backcountry recreation area has more than 25 miles of trails that traverse a wide range of habitat: deep gorges, tranquil forest glens, and gurgling streams that tumble into wide waterfalls.

Novice and established fly-fishermen alike should flip a few casts into the rivers around Highlands and Cashiers. Most hold their fair share of fine rainbow, brook, and brown trout.

Power up for an active day with a pile of banana bread French toast drizzled with sticky praline sauce at Blue Bike Café in Highlands . Or if your mornings are more about a light bite and caffeine, pop into Buck’s Coffee in Cashiers .

Lunch is easy at On the Side, a walk-up joint attached to the Cashiers Farmers Market that delivers tender pulled pork swimming in a tangy mustard-based sauce, with standards like potato salad and coleslaw.

For dinner, Ristorante Paoletti offers some old-world atmosphere with its thoughtful interpretations of northern Italian cuisine. Opt for the simplicity of N.C. rainbow trout sautéed with lemon, butter, and white wine; or tender tortellini with sweet peas and prosciutto. At the edge of a meadow in the shadow of Laurel Knob, Canyon Kitchen easily earns the honor bestowed by OpenTable diners as one of the country’s most scenic restaurants. Bites like deviled eggs studded with Iberico ham and apple-cider brined pork chops score rave reviews.

For a casual alternative, Ugly Dog Public House (with locations in Highlands and Cashiers) offers North Carolina craft beer (if they’ve got it, go with Satulah Mountain Brewing Co.’s Sunset Saison) and bar food bites like fried mac ‘n cheese and fat, juicy burgers.

Old Edwards Inn

Old Edwards Inn

Where to Stay in Highlands-Cashiers

The Old Edwards Inn , a multi-year winner in our annual Readers' Choice Awards , is a no-brainer for Highlands accommodations ( rooms from $375 per night ). The stalwart consistently delivers stellar service and elegant yet comfortable rooms, as do its parent company’s other spots: Half-Mile Farm ( rooms from $370 per night ), a few miles out of town and cozied up to a quiet lake, and casually chic 200 Main ( rooms from $185 per night ), which is just down the street from the Inn and provides some Old Edwards bang for a lot less buck.

For something new in something old, check into the rustic-meets-refined Highlander Mountain House ( rooms from $230 per night ), an 18-room hotel in an 1885 clapboard farmhouse. And in Cashiers, a landmark property just reopened after a full-scale freshen-up. The beloved historic resort, High Hampton Inn ( rooms from $595 per night ), was recently renovated by the team behind Tennessee’s revered Blackberry Farm .

Travel Guides

An all season cashiers nc travel guide.

(Article last updated July 2021). I’ve spent many years exploring the dynamically beautiful town of Cashiers North Carolina getting to know the land, the people, and most importantly, the best things to do while in this unique mountain town. From a once in a lifetime dam release waterfall to unique casual and fine dining eating opportunities, there is something for everyone in this Cashiers NC Travel Guide.

Cashiers NC Travel Guide

The first thing you need to know about Cashiers is that it’s not pronounced like the clerk who checks you out at a grocery store, it is pronounced “Cash-ers”. This small mountain town sits East of its popular neighbor, Highlands , but is not short of charm and things to do. Known for being a popular vacation home for golf enthusiasts, the downtown area is flooded with home decor stores, antique shops, and landscaping stores to serve the non-golf enthused. I’ve included all of the best things to do in this Cashiers NC travel guide. Just be aware that while exploring downtown, there are no sidewalks, so you’ll want to pay attention closely to traffic as you walk from store to store.

Things To Do

cashiers nc travel guide

A Cashiers NC Travel Guide would be remiss to mention golf first! Although I’m not much of a player, I’ve seen some beautiful courses in my day but none compare to the lovely ones in Cashiers with their stunning mountainous views. For these reasons, I’m perfectly receptive to a slow pace of play day on the course. While most clubs tend to be private, there are a few semi-public courses the enthusiast can look into at this link .

Pick Your Own Dahlia’s

This has to have been the greatest accident I ever stumbled upon. Past High Hampton Inn there is a beautiful landscape store called “Scotlyn’s Yard” (141 Little Terrapin Road Cashiers, NC) that during Dahlia season (June/July until October) is teeming with dinner plate size Dahlia’s in every color. What started as a quick stop for a photo ended up us finding an “honor system” cut-your-own-Dahlia bouquet. It was $2 for every size except for the Dinner Plate Dahlia’s which were $4. It was the best $20 I ever have spent and was able to make a lovely bouquet when we got home. (See my tips on Flower Arranging here )

Semi-Private Cooking Class

Kristin of the Barn hosts semi-private cooking classes in her rustic barn on a beautiful stretch of property just outside of Cashiers. I can’t wait to take one of these classes in the future and dine at her rustic barn table with all of our family.

Boating and Water Sports

This town sits right on the edge of Lake Glenville, which is a gorgeous natural lake with shimmering blue water and agreeable weather most weekends. You’ll see the ski boats, pontoons, tubers, and kayakers all out there together, and even on the busiest weekend, it doesn’t seem that crowded. This is the only rental place I’ve passed in town, but most people own there own boats that you’ll see out there.

High Falls Dam Release

This one could be lumped under hiking but it was way too cool of an experience to not get its own slide. Each month, Duke Energy releases the dam to Lake Glenville, and for those who time it right (because of this schedule ), you can watch a small stream of water turn into a behemoth waterfall right in front of your eyes. As some would say, it’s Biblical. We went in the middle of summer and it was still chilly, so bring a rain resistant jacket and make sure to check out more info here on how to get there. You’ll definitely want to get there early to scope out a good spot for photos, it gets quite crowded!

You can’t come to the mountains and not take advantage of one of the many trails they have here. There is a range of difficulty levels and experiences. From moderately easy hikes like Whiteside Mountain and Yellow Mountain, Sunset Falls to steep inclines with impressive waterfall views, there is no shortage of trails to go on. Check this link for a complete list of hikes and trailheads.

Garden Stores

Cashiers is a naturally occurring rainforest. The vegetation is lush and there are plenty of garden stores to indulge in.  Chattooga Gardens is situated right on the edge of town before the Cornucopia and continuously features impressive displays of local vegetation to take home. I am particularly drawn to the antique cone hydrangeas, impatiens, dahlias, peonies and ferns.  I loved the winding trellises of daisy vine and the dinner plate dahlias that were in front.

Antique Shopping

Cashiers is known for its collection of home decor stores and antique shopping. There are plenty of shopping places all lumped right next to each other which is great for those who don’t mind walking. Some of my repeat favorites are The Village Hound (pictured), Josephines for lithograph prints and French antiques, Rusticks, Vivian Metzger Antiques, Summer Place Antiques , and Robins Nest . While I may have been in each of these stores more than a handful of times, I always find something new that piques my interest.

Cashiers Farmers Market

I couldn’t decide whether to lump Cashiers Farmers Market under food, or things to do, but I feel like it’s such an institution for Cashiers it can be both. I love having this place as an excuse to run to town for some provisions. They stock their store with seasonal local veggies and fruits, have fridges full of meats, eggs, cheese, and dairy, and have shelves lined with homemade preserves, jams, jars of honey, and every sort of condiment your heart could call for. They also have a bevy of freshly baked treats like pies and cakes. It’s a dangerous place to be with a hungry stomach, but you can cure that with a trip to the BBQ place attached to it.

Places to Eat

Cornucopia Cashiers NC travel guide

On The Side BBQ

The. Best. BBQ. No kidding. When a woman we met on one of our hikes told us about this place, we knew it was an immediate “must visit” because she said something about “life-changing mac n’cheese”. They specialize in pulled pork BBQ.  They let the food do the talking, and it talks right to your bbq loving soul. Pro-tip, buy both varieties of their sauces and mix it together while you eat. It’s tangy and sweet and chock full of flavor.  And if you were curious: yes, you can buy On-The-Side-BBQ before you leave town and drive it home to Atlanta for a future meal. It reheats excellently. You’ll find this place, “On The Side” of the Cashiers Farmers Market.

Cashiers Valley Smokehouse

The newbie in town, Cashiers Valley Smokehouse is an excellent BBQ institution to visit on a rainy day. Ample indoor and covered patio seating. Their pork is chopped, not pulled. The sauces are fantastic, although I’m partial to the mustard-based sauce myself. An excellent BBQ joint for those craving a classic BBQ experience, complete with texas toast as big as your head.

Don’t let the exterior of this place fool you, it is MASSIVE on the inside. I was surprised by how open the dining space is and it has a charming little patio that you can sit at while enjoying the crisp mountain air of Cashiers NC. Surprisingly, at one pm there was still quite a lunch crowd so we sat at the bar, enjoying a local brew and ordered some food to share. A plate of hummus and a chicken BLT that hit the spot nicely. Although our neighbors Spicy Cajun Turkey Melt looked incredible, we just decided next time we were in town we’d have to switch up our orders. Cornucopia is a definite must-visit for lunch.

Buck’s Coffee

Any good mountain town knows that you need to have a local place that serves up coffee. Buck’s is always on my “to-visit” list when we get to town. I don’t know if it’s because I actually need coffee or because it just doesn’t feel like a trip into town without strolling the stores with a warm (or iced) cup of coffee in hand. They have a ton of sandwiches and sweet treats on hand to cure any sort of “munchies” you may find yourself with while wandering the stores.

Slabtown Pizza

Located on the same strip as Valley Bakery, Slabtown Pizza has delicious pizza pies. Whether you create your own of pick from one of their menu favorites, everyone leaves satisfied from Slabtown.

Chile Loco

If pizza isn’t calling to you from Slabtown, Chile Loco right next door is the authentic Mexican you may be craving. Everything is homemade to perfection. This is a mountain institution and you should definitely come hungry and come often. Strong and delicious margaritas paired with spicy Mexican is just what the doctor ordered for vacation perfection.

Sugar Cloud Baking Company

Bursting to the brim with sweet confections, Sugar Cloud Baking Company is hiding in plain sight right across the street from Cashiers Farmers Market. They have sweet treats of all varieties and a variety of cupcakes to choose from. It’s mostly an in-town wedding cake company, but you can always pop in for a unique sweet treat!

The Ugly Dog Pub

This Highlands pub made an expansion to Cashiers and boasts an impressive patio area for dining and happy hour-ing. The Ugly Dog Pub in Cashiers has a weekly lineup of live music and an impressive Sunday Brunch and a Bloody Mary Bar that is not to be missed.

Canyon Kitchen

Definitely a place for a special occasion, you can’t beat the views at Canyon Kitchen ! It is extremely beautiful and the food is delightful. Reservations are typically needed and the dress code is mountain casual, but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear a fun block print dress and a statement earring.

The Library Kitchen & Bar

A stunning and chef-driven restaurant just outside of the downtown area. You cant go wrong with anything on the menu. You’ll typically find local delights like Coriander Sauteed Carolina Trout on the menu at The Library.   Sit at the bar and try one of their seasonal cocktails!

AirBNB’s

Cashiers Cottage (pictured above): Owned by one of my friends in Atlanta, this cozy cottage is brimming with charm and is within walking distance of the Village Green in Cashiers NC. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms plus a beautiful kitchen worthy of a Food Network TV Show.

The Perch: Every corner of this little cabin is Instagram-worthy. The owners, Bryan & Stephen, have done an outstanding job with the entire cabin looking like a retreat Ralph Lauren would spend a weekend at.

I’m not too familiar with the Hotel scene in Cashiers, however, I think AirBnB’s are the way to go in this mountain town. I stumbled upon the most adorable cottage called The Highlands Honeymoon Cottage on Instagram and was smitten instantaneously. It’s an Instagram dream cottage complete with shiplap walls, a Smeg fridge, modern-chic furniture and charming mountain touches throughout. You can find the link to the Highland Honeymoon Cottage here or check out other Cashiers AirBnBs here . (Photo Courtesy of Highlands Honeymoon Cottage)

Hotels

High Hampton Inn just received a full renovation and was recently purchased by the team who does Blackberry Farm. Every detail in the new establishment has been refined for the resort-experience seeker. They have plenty of things to do on the premises like canoeing, hiking, golfing and plenty of relaxing.

Hotel Cashiers is within walking distance to the bustling downtown area.

Greystone Inn on Lake Toxaway is a little bit of a drive but looks every bit worth it. Situated right on the lake, the restaurant, spa, and resort-style rooms will have you extending your vacation.

This casual mountain town is sure to capture your heart whether you are staying for a weekend or for a summer. It is not one that you want to skip out on during Fall and you’ll find that the lack of cell phone service can’t deter a good weekend away. Let me know if you get to use this Cashiers NC travel guide and if it helped you plan your vacation there! See you around town!

Your photos are so fun! Thanks for sharing everything. I’m heading there this weekend and cannot wait to explore this sweet little mountain town!

Great visit to Cashiers. However, it’s not that Cashiers is “like” a rain forest. Cashiers is in an actual rain forest – the only one in the eastern United States.

That’s interesting, I had no idea! Thank you for the info! I’ll amend the post!

I loved your article and used many of your suggestions on our summer trip to Cashiers two weeks ago. First of all, thank you so much for the suggestion on High Falls Dam Release! This was definitely a highlight of our trip! I only have one note of disagreement: the folks that told you On the Side BBQ has “life-changing mac n’ cheese” has obviously not been farther south. The BBQ WAS delicious but the mac ‘n cheese was sub-par.

I’m so glad this helped you and your family out. Isn’t that High Falls release magical? We’d love to go and do it again, it was such an incredible site. Ha I haven’t had their mac n cheese in years so may need to pop over there this next weekend to confirm that review ;). Glad you had a great time with your family!

hello, what is the safest way to get through the windy roads to cashiers, north carolina from Chicago, IL

Hi Joe, I recommend you check with Google on the best route from Chicago. Most roads coming into Cashiers are windy so you likely will have to drive on one of them to get there. Just take it slow and enjoy the scenery.

Thank you so much for this informative article. We are headed to Cashiers in July and have never been to the area. I am grateful to have your information to know where to go.

Enjoy your time there!

We were hosted at The Wells Hotel , a gorgeous boutique mountain hotel in the heart of Cashiers. The modern, clean accommodations can be booked in traditional studio hotel rooms, or in cabins surrounding the property.

We stayed in one of the cabins with two king beds, small kitchen, bathroom, and living space. It was beautifully cozy and fit our family of four perfectly. We greatly enjoyed our time lounging on the screen porch, watching movies on the smart tvs, and eating meals together on the dining table. It felt like a true home away from home!

Must-Try Restaurants

Whiteside brewing company.

Located on The Wells Hotel property, Whiteside Brewing was meer steps away from our lodging. We couldn’t resist the smell of fresh food drifting into our cabin so we made our way over there for dinner one evening. It was superb and the smash burger was unforgettable! This restaurant is clearly a community gathering place with music, fun games, and drinks.

Slab Town Pizza

With two pizza-loving kids along for the ride, we always plan for pizza for at least one meal while we travel. Slab Town Pizza was one of the best pizza restaurants we’ve tried while gallivanting across the state! We ordered carry-out and feasted in our cabin. This is a must-try while in town!

Crossroads Custard & Cold Brew

Crossroads Custard & Cold Brew was the biggest surprise of our trip. We stopped by for a quick bite of ice cream but were pleasantly surprised to find an entire menu of indulgent custard creations, smoothies, homemade cookies, breakfast sandwiches, and more. We returned the next morning to say hi to the kind owners and order breakfast which was great too!

Cashiers Valley Smokehouse

Every town needs a solid bbq spot and Cashiers Valley Smokehouse has stepped up to fill that role. With an emphasis on smoked meats and home-cooked sides, they succeed in being a casual eatery with food that comforts the soul.

Sugar Cloud Baking Company is a small bakery that specializes in tasty desserts. On the weekends, they serve fresh yeast donuts which we enjoyed in the morning together. We of course had to try one of their big, scrumptious cupcakes too!

What to do in Cashiers

The village green of cashiers.

The Village Green is a beautiful 13 acre park in Cashiers with walking trails, art structures, picnic areas, and a castle-themed playground.

Silver Run Falls

Only a 5-10 minute drive from Cashiers will take you to a phenomenal waterfall and swimming hole. It’s a very easy, short hike, with the trail being about 200 yards. As it’s a flat walk with little to no incline, it’s perfect for inexperienced hikers.

silver run falls

The 25 foot waterfall is impressive in size and power. The water rushes into a peaceful pool that is perfect for wading in. It’s a remarkable view!

Whitewater Falls

One of the coolest sights close to Cashiers is Whitewater Falls. Straddling the NC/SC border, Whitewater Falls is the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi! The drive there is only about 20-30 minutes away and offers some unmatched views of the surrounding scenery.

whitewater falls

The path is entirely paved and only half a mile round trip with magnificent views along the way. Once you reach the end of the path, you’ll be met with an astonishingly beautiful waterfall that’s certainly taller than any other in NC. There’s a group of stairs you can walk to get a closer look, if desired!

Until next time…

As you can see, we did a LOT of eating and playing in Jackson County. We fell in love with Cashiers and we only scratched the surface. We know we will be back so please let us know if you have any favorite stops in the area that we missed!

This looks like my kind of get away. Thanks so much for sharing all your get aways.

I’m glad I could help!

Visit North Carolina

Enjoy Mountain Adventures in Cashiers, Dillsboro and Sylva

Some of North Carolina’s most beautiful scenes – mountain peaks, waterfalls and trails – are in Jackson County, where a great meal is never far away.

Making the decision to get away to the North Carolina mountains is easy. Deciding exactly where you’ll go may not be, with several attractive mountain towns dotting the landscape. Start your search with Jackson County and you’ll discover an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise .

Plan a multiday trip to the neighboring towns of Cashiers, Sylva and Dillsboro, easily flowing from one destination to the next. Led by hiking trails through the mountains, you’ll experience unforgettable sights and breathtaking views. And along the way, you’re always only a few steps from a remarkable meal .

One of the highest waterfalls in the Eastern U.S. – 411-foot Whitewater Falls – is near the state line just off Highway 281, south of Cashiers . Follow the quarter-mile paved trail from the parking lot to picnic spots and the upper overlook. If you’re feeling adventurous, head to the smaller lower overlook, which is down 154 wooden steps.

Next up is Whiteside Mountain , with 740-foot vertical cliffs that are the tallest in the East. It’s part of the panoramic view you’ll enjoy on the 2-mile loop trail that includes the 4,930-foot peak. Watch for peregrine falcons during the first half of the year. The cliffs are a nesting site for the raptors, which grab their prey from the sky.

Exploring Jackson County’s natural beauty is best enjoyed with love ones

The trailhead for Silver Run Falls is on Highway 107. It’ll take you about 5 minutes to trek the well-blazed and maintained trail to the falls, which is one of our state’s most accessible. At the bottom of its almost 40-foot drop is a sandy-bottomed pool. Take a dip there on a hot summer day or enjoy the view, which attracts nature photographers year-round.

You’ll always find a great meal in Cashiers. Settle on the brook-side porch at Cornucopia , where a pan of fresh cornbread starts your meal. Then enjoy one of its large burgers, hearty soups or popular Bloody Marys at Sunday brunch. Choose your favorite sauce and toppings for the New York-style crust Slab Town Pizza bakes in its brick oven. Or try a house specialty pizza (the Duke has sausage, pepperoni, bacon, ricotta, mozzarella and red sauce), sandwich, pasta or salad.

Dinner at Canyon Kitchen isn’t complete without a stroll around the property, which is in the second-home community of Lonesome Valley, surrounded by forests and granite peaks. The spectacle continues inside the restaurant, where the dinner menu changes with the seasonal ingredients gathered from local farms. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday nights from May through October, when a fireplace warms the open dining room that’s inside a renovated barn.  Food & Wine even included Canyon Kitchen on its list of "The Most Romantic Restaurant in Every State."

Below the dam that creates Lake Glenville , popular with boaters and anglers, is 150-foot High Falls . It’s a three-quarter-mile hike (easy going down, but strenuous coming back up), with stone and wood steps helping you navigate the 650 feet of elevation change from the trailhead. A second trail provides access to the fall’s base, but portions of it are sporty. Water flow makes this waterfall moody. When the river runs low, it’s approachable. But it’s a powerful force to witness when the water is high or a day when the dam is open, supplying kayakers on the Tuckasegee River’s West Fork with whitewater.

From the top of Waterrock Knob, you can see across to the Great Smoky Mountains

North Carolina’s most famous roadway – the  Blue Ridge Parkway – starts its journey north through Jackson County, where its highest elevation visitor center is at Milepost 451.2. From the parking lot, where you’ll find restrooms and picnic spots, follow the fairly steep 1.2-mile trail to the 6,292-foot summit of Waterrock Knob . Your effort will be rewarded with views that stretch 50 miles across Maggie Valley to the Great Smoky Mountains. It also offers an unencumbered vantage for sunrises and sunsets.

About 20 miles farther north on the Parkway is the Richland Balsam Trail . The uphill 1.5-mile loop climbs about 700 feet as it winds through fragrant Fraser and Balsam fir trees.

You’ll find 1,000-acre Pinnacle Park between the Blue Ridge Parkway and Sylva , the county seat. Follow the old logging road to Pinnacle Bald. The almost 7-mile round trip requires significant effort, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. You can see the bald just above the tree line from Sylva, where a trail leads to refreshing destinations.

Sylva’s booming downtown brewery scene includes microbreweries such as Innovation Brewing , which serves dozens of different beers in a year, and  Balsam Falls Brewing , whose owners brew with fruit they grow. Walk along Main Street to explore the shops and other attractions downtown. Though cozy resorts and bed and breakfasts can be found tucked among the area mountains, Sylva is also home to most of the county’s national brand lodging .

Toast to good times at Innovation Brewing in Sylva

When you’ve worked up an appetite after great mornings or afternoons of exploration, you’ll be pleased with Sylva’s restaurants too. Choose among popular staples, such as crab cakes, from Lulu’s on Main’s deep menu, which is augmented by daily specials.

But you can’t spend time in North Carolina and not try the barbecue – your friends back home will ask. Many restaurants across our state are revered for their pork that’s lovingly smoked over a hardwood fire for hours. In Dillsboro , a few minutes’ drive from Sylva, Haywood Smokehouse is one of only a few barbecue restaurants statewide that also prepares beef brisket. It’s served with tender collard greens, creamy coleslaw and baked beans studded with burnt ends. Haywood Smokehouse might also be one of the highest-reviewed restaurants you encounter.

Cashiers, NC Travel Guide

Nestled the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Cashiers, NC offers a unique blend of charm and natural beauty. This quiet mountain town has a number of upscale local shops, quite a few rustic design companies, great restaurants and access to a wide range of outdoor recreational activities, like hiking, fishing and golfing.

Where to stay

  • The Wells Hotel, Cashiers, NC – ($747/4 nights). This is a lovely, upscale, rustic-style mountain hotel. There’s even an outdoor fire pit to cook your s’mores over before heading in for a hot shower and a soft bed. Several shops and restaurants are within walking distance and the town park, a nice spot for an evening walk, is just across the street. This hotel is a great home-base for all your mountain adventures.

Where to eat

  • Las Margaritas – Just a few steps from The Wells Hotel. They have all the more common Mexican options as well as a large seafood section and quite a few items I haven’t seen before. Our dinner was unique and delicious and very reasonably priced.
  • Buck’s Coffee Cafe – They serve hot and cold coffees, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, pastries, beer and wine offerings, and small bites. We make it a point to get their seasonal Maple Spice Latte, an iced vanilla latte and a sandwich every time we visit Cashiers.
  • Cashiers Farmers Market – Also walking distance from The Wells. They offer fresh local produce, fresh baked pies, delicious locally made baked goods, jams & jellies, cheeses, and specialty items and a BBQ take out restaurant named “On the Side”.
  • The Village Green – The Village Green is a 13.2-acre park located in The Heart of Cashiers , North Carolina, at the crossroads of Highway 64 and Highway 107.
  • The Yellow Branch Falls Trail, Walhalla, SC – (3 mile out and back, 465’ elevation). This trail crosses a little stream several times before becoming a narrow trail along the side of a beautiful valley. It ends at a 50’ waterfall with many individual cascades. This trail is super popular so go early unless you love crowds.
  • The Stumphouse Tunnel – parking area ($5/car). Just across the road from Yellow Branch Falls is the Stumphouse Tunnel. The tunnel was dug using hand tools before the Civil War, but never completed. Approximately 1/4 mile of it is open to the public. The tunnel maintains a constant temperature of 50 degrees year-round and was once used by the Clemson University to cure bleu cheese. It gets a little spooky as you get deeper and we noticed a few bats sleeping in it.
  • Issaqueena Falls – Just next to the Stumphouse Tunnel. The observation deck is an easy 1/4 mile walk from the parking lot. A rough, almost vertical trail goes from observation deck to the bottom of the falls. Visitors are not encouraged to take it but a lot of people do (we did). It was fun but it was a bit of a challenge getting back up.
  • John’s Jump Falls and DEW Falls, Pisgah National Forest, NC – ($0). (0.6 mile total out and back, 45’ elevation). I would recommend using the AllTrails App to help find your way. There is no sign at the trailhead. John’s falls is about 0.1 mile. It starts out looking a bit like a deer trail and turns into a scramble down to a pretty cascade waterfall. DEW Falls is a lightly trodden 0.3 mile trail through dense mountain laurel with a scramble down steps made of roots. It ends at a gorgeous tropical feeling pool with a waterfall. A magical place. We had both these hikes all to ourselves.
  • Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Trail – Gorges State Park, Lake Toxaway, NC (3.9 miles out and back, 770 elevation). Rainbow Falls (150’) is absolutely spectacular and Turtle Falls (25’), just a short walk farther on, is beautiful, too. We even got to see a bear cross the trail. Go early because this challenging hike is very popular.
  • Oconee State Park, Mountain Rest, SC – ($5/car) Tamasee Knob Trail (4.1 out and back, 751’ elevation). The name “Tamassee” means “Place of the Sunlight of God”, according to an interpretation of the Cherokee word that gave this area its name. I think that’s the perfect name for this hike. It’s a beautiful walk through the woods on undulating hills, up onto a ridge, ending at a rock outcropping with big views. We had the entire hike to ourselves.

Must visit Waterfalls in Highlands and Cashiers, NC

visit cashiers nc

If you love gorgeous waterfalls, you won’t believe your eyes when you visit this small, North Carolina town!

Highlands and Cashiers are known for endless exciting activities in the scenic beauty of majestic nature. But the most picturesque of all the attractions in the area are the numerous waterfalls. Let’s take a look at some of our favorites.

visit cashiers nc

When it comes to waterfalls, North Carolina has a lot to offer. You can hike to these spectacular natural wonders in Cashiers or find easily accessible ones in Highlands. And the best part is that regardless of whether you take the trip with your family or friends, everyone will love the scenic beauty of these ancient forests. And seeing the beautiful waterfalls after a long excursion in the wilderness can feel as exciting as winning the jackpot at the  Sizzling Hot  online casino game. The only thing is that there are so many sites in Highlands and Cashiers that it’s not easy to choose which ones to visit. To help you out, we’ve put together our selection of the best waterfalls in North Carolina. Check it out.

Whitewater Falls in Highlands, NC – Among the Highest Waterfalls Near Cashiers

Table of Contents

Whitewater Falls, with a height of over 400 feet, is the highest waterfall on our list. It gets surrounded by untouched nature that has been protected from humans by rock cliffs and steep slopes. Visitors can spot various berries, wildflowers, and unearthly native plants. Plus, there are different fungi, mosses, ferns, and other plant species you’ve probably never seen before.

To get to the waterfalls, you need to drive along Highway 281 from the North Carolina state border towards Whitewater. The hike begins from the picnic and parking area off the highway. The paved trail goes along a route where you can marvel at picturesque views of mountains and the lake Jocassee between them. It’s not an overly long or difficult hike, so everyone in a family can come along. There are even benches on the curves so everyone, who needs it, can take a rest.

When you reach the middle of the trail, you can already see the upper part of the waterfall. From there, the wooden stairs take you to a closer view. But make sure not to step over the observation deck. Waterfalls are dangerous because of the high-pressure water and slippery rocks. You can only be safe if you remain in the designated areas. Jumping from a waterfall, swimming near it, or climbing under it can end with an accident.

Cullasaja Falls in Highlands, NC – Perfect for Hiking

Waterfalls come from water flowing off from soft rock onto solid rock. The Cullasaja falls is shaped the same way by the Cullasaja River. You’ll find it on US Route 64, about 8 miles from Highlands.

If you’re looking for waterfalls without hiking, this one’s for you. You can park your car off the road in a roadside pull-off and admire the waterfall from the parking spot. The view to this one of the most beautiful waterfalls near Highlands and Cashiers becomes especially memorable during the wintertime. That’s when tree leaves have fallen, and you get a fuller picture of the majestic waterfall. If you feel adventurous, you can also step to the unmarked trail taking you closer to the falls. But the rough path is for experienced hikers only.

Dry Falls and Bridal Veil Falls in Highlands, NC

visit cashiers nc

Higher up the Cullassaja river are two more waterfalls: the Dry Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. Both about 3 miles from Highlands, via US Route 64, they’re some of the best waterfalls for kids to see. You can marvel at their beauty safely from the observation areas, and all the roads that take you closer to the waterfalls are paved and secure. Plus, if your little ones want to see waterfalls with rainbow, you can find the sight in Bridal Veil during the afternoon.

By the way, don’t let yourself get fooled by the name. The Dry Falls are anything but dry. And if you go down to the base of the falls, you can even get behind it. That’s not possible with most waterfalls in Cashiers or Highlands, so we’d recommend you to use this unique opportunity. However, don’t expect to remain dry behind the falls.

Glen Falls in Highlands, NC – Calming Sounds of Falling Water

visit cashiers nc

Glen Falls comprises three waterfalls with hiking trails leading to observation areas for each of them. These falls are not among the most dramatic and striking waterfalls of the world. But the calming sound and sight of falling water make them perfect for some contemplation time.

The route that goes downhill is about two miles long, making it an easy walk for the whole family. Leave your car along Highway 106. A gravel road from the sign “Glen Falls” goes directly to a parking area.

The good thing is that if you don’t have enough energy that day, you can keep your excursion short and only go to the first of the falls. But if you go all the way to the second and third falls, make sure to step on a side trail you should see halfway when heading back up. It leads to a spot where you can admire the view on the Overflow Creek with a gorgeous valley around it.

High Falls in Highlands, NC – a Waterfall With Power

It is a unique waterfall because it’s in front of the Lake Glenville Dam. On specific dates a year, the dam is released, and the waterfall becomes immensely powerful. To get to the waterfall, take Highway 107 until you reach Pine Creek Road. Turn left, and soon you should see the High Falls sign. A word of caution: the hike down the road to the waterfall might seem easy. But it’s pretty strenuous to climb back up.

Hurricane Falls in Highlands, NC and Lake Glenville

Hurricane Falls offers a waterfall and lakes experience. It’s not advisable to step onto the unsecure hiking road. But since this falls pours right into Lake Glenville, you can rent a boat and row it close to the waterfall. Pack a lunch with you and have a soothing picnic on the water. And if riding a boat doesn’t sound appealing to you, it’s also possible to take in the view from the roadside. Highway 107 takes you to the falls (5 miles from Cashiers). There’s a pull-off area past the bridge.

Looking Glass Falls in Highlands, NC – See Your Reflection

This waterfall in North Carolina is known for its bottom surface. Its polished granite looks smooth as a looking glass (hence the name). When the water freezes on the surface during the winter, it reflects the sun like a mirror.

The waterfall is 60 feet high and locates in the picturesque Pisgah National Forest. You can get there by Highway 64 in Cashiers. When you’ve reached about 30 miles from the intersection of Highway 64 and Highway 107, take the US 276 and drive another 6 miles.

visit cashiers nc

Silver Run Falls in Highlands, NC  – With a Sandy Beach

The Silver Run Falls runs into a fairy-tale-like pool surrounded by beautiful trees. Its height is only 25 feet, but the main attraction in the area is the sandy beach. Both tourists and locals enjoy having picnics here. And yes, you can also go swimming.

Highway 107 to the South takes you to the location. You can spot it from a Forest Service sign that directs you to a gravel parking area. From there, a short trail leads directly to the falls. There’s even a charming little footbridge that takes you over the Whitewater River.

Drift Falls in Highlands, NC – Waterfall at a 45-degree angle

This 80 feet long waterfall is a unique sight. It doesn’t pour straight down like all the other waterfalls on our list. The Drift Falls drops at a 45-degree angle. If you’re into extreme sports, you might even use the cascade as a waterslide (only for the bravest).

The easiest way to get to Drift Falls is to take Highway 64 to Sapphire. It’s about 10 miles from Cashiers. When you get to the “Whitewater” Road, turn right. The Horsepasture River that forms the Drift Falls is about 3 miles to the south from there.

Sliding Rock Falls in Highlands, NC – Only 10 Feet Long

The Sliding Rock Falls is the shortest one on our list. However, the cool water of the Chattooga River makes it an excellent retreat spot for the hot summer days. The water creates a waterslide that runs into several big potholes. You can let the water carry you right into one of the potholes. Less adventurous visitors can also chill in the pool below the waterfall.

The falls is about two miles south of Highway 107. The Whiteside Cover Road takes you right to the Chattooga River. There’s also a beautiful bridge crossing the river. It creates memorable waterfall walks.

Toxaway Falls in Highlands, NC – Make Sure Not to Miss It

The thing with the Toxaway Falls is that it’s easy to drive past it. That’s because there are no trails with the waterfall at the end here. You can spot the waterfall area from a large masonry bridge. It’s about 14 miles on Highway 64 heading east. After crossing the bridge, you can park your car and marvel the Toxaway Falls. It slides over a beautiful colorful bedrock surrounded by spectacular rugged terrain.

Rainbow Falls in Highlands, NC – Catch a Rainbow In the Mornings

The Toxaway lake is the destination of another fall: the Rainbow Falls. With a height of 150 feet, these breathtaking falls bring out a rainbow on sunny mornings. However, it’s not the best place to take your kids because the trail is pretty arduous. On the plus side, the path is easy to follow and marked.

South direction on Highway 281 should take you to signs of Rainbow Falls. You can park your car at the lot and start your hike. The trail is about 1.5 miles. Then you’ll reach the river, where you’ll get a great view of the waterfalls.

Secret Falls in Highlands, NC

Secret Falls in the Highlands is also known as the Big Shoals Falls. It showers down into a scenic pool that’s perfect for cooling yourself during summer’s heat. The hike to the waterfalls is only half a mile, so it should be manageable for most people. However, getting to the trail is a bit tricky. First, you take Highway 64 from Cashiers. Then turn left onto Main Street. You need to ride your car through a town and further until you reach the Walking Stick road. Turn right and follow the road for two miles until you get to a bridge. Cross the bridge and drive until FR4567. Turn right, and you should get to a parking lot and a sign that says “Secret Falls.” Congratulations, you’ve reached your destination.

So this was our extensive list of eye-catching waterfalls to hike in Cashiers and Highlands, NC. Except for the Toxaway Falls, they all have trails that take you to viewing platforms and great spots to marvel at the beauty of a majestic fall.

Some of the falls, like the Whitewater falls, are perfect for visiting with the whole family. Others, like the High Falls, are more suitable for only the physically fit.

But one thing’s for sure: all the falls in this list are wondrous sights that make great pictures and memorable moments. We promise you, once you’ve seen one of the falls in Highlands, North Carolina, you’ll be coming back to see more of them.

Why Cashiers, North Carolina is the Perfect Winter Getaway

visit cashiers nc

As far as destinations go, there’s no better place to visit in the winter than the mountains with their snow-dusted pine trees and ice-covered faces shimmering like the White Cliffs of Dover.

The mountains in winter are a gift for the senses. They give us a reset, just the thing to strengthen your mindset. And in Cashiers, North Carolina, one doesn’t have to look far to find just the things to relieve the pressures and busyness of life at home, whether it’s a massage with views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains; wetting a line in one of many streams; hearing the thunder of Whitewater Falls in Nantahala National Forest; or hiking to the top of Whiteside Mountain to take in the views and the fresh mountain air.

Cashiers has been a vacation destination and getaway for well over a century, due in large part to its cool summer temperatures. Given its higher elevation in the plateau at more than 3,400 feet above sea level, temperatures are often 10 to 20 degrees cooler than many of the major cities throughout the southeast.

There’s really no bad time to visit the Cashiers area, says Nick Breedlove, executive director of Jackson County Tourism Development Authority.

The mild weather of spring brings beautiful daffodil blooms lining the town’s corridor and heavy thickets of blooming rhododendron along the highways. Fall ushers in the change of colors dotting the mountainsides. And in winter, the temperatures are often mild enough to hit the links on one of 20-plus courses in the Cashiers area. Plus, during the winter, there are fewer visitors, so you may find yourself alone in the great big wilderness. How’s that for a shift in your mindset?

The mountain water is much colder and not so good for swimming, but that chilly water makes winter fly fishing better than other times of year. When the water’s cold, the oxygen level increases and, in turn, the fish are more active. So, the equation is a no-brainer: Winter + cold water + active fish = great fishing.

The Flyfishing Trail is a good one to follow for the best places to wet a line. The 15 stops along the trail are scenic and swimming with trout — rainbow, brown, brook. Some creeks and rivers are stocked by local hatcheries, such as the Tuckasegee and Scott Creek; others are wild and wonderful:

· Raven Fork starts along the Blue Ridge Parkway — in winter, be sure to check in advance to make sure the Parkway is open — and goes north for more than two miles, a stretch known as Cherokee Trophy Water where fish as long as 20 to 30 inches are common. Permits are required.

· Panthertown Creek flows for about three miles through Panthertown Valley, an area known as the “Yosemite of the East” because of its bowl shape and rocky bluffs. This is one of the most-scenic areas in the county which is also great for hiking with trails along old logging roads and spectacular views. The valley is also home to numerous waterfalls, including popular Schoolhouse Falls and Frolictown Falls.

· Wild rainbow and brown trout swim the waters of Scotsman and Fowler creeks, each about three miles long. Both creeks flow into the Chattooga River, the same river where the movie, “Deliverance,” was filmed.

· The Tuckasegee has several good stretches of trout-laden waters, but it’s along the four-miles that run between the bridge on Highway 107 and Dillsboro Park that fishermen can claim title to the Tuckasegee Slam — catching all three species of trout in one spot.

In 2016, Jackson County was designated by state and local officials as North Carolina’s Premier Fishing Destination. For a complete list of guide services, maps and more, visit FlyFishingTrail.com or NCTroutCapital.com .

Pamper Yourself

After a full day of skiing, fishing and hiking — or all of the above — you’ve had the time for that mind reset. Now it’s time to listen to your body talk. Those muscles are screaming for some TLC, and there are several spas in the Cashiers area that will give them the love they demand or give your skin a break from the harshness of the winter weather with a relaxing facial.

· Spend an hour or two at Canyon Spa in the shadow of Cow Mountain in Lonesome Valley, and you’ll walk out a new person. The spa is housed in a caretaker’s cottage from the early 1900s and features the original fireplace where guests can cozy up to a warm fire while waiting for a facial, massage or other therapies that pamper your body with all-natural products, many using herbs grown in the nearby garden.

· Cashiers Spa — Located within the heart of Cashiers, the Cashiers Spa helps visitors relax their body, mind, and spirit with professional massage therapists. Services range from Swedish Massage to Thai Herbal Poultice. Have your massage onsite, or give the spa a call and they’ll send a massage therapist to your place of stay. Online: cashiersspa.com .

· Tarah’s Beauty Bar — A quaint and relaxing mountain day spa that will give your skin the wellness treatment it deserves. Signature treatments include organic Hungarian facials; vitamin and antioxidant-rich chemical peels; and body/facial waxings. Online: tbbspa.com

Go For a Walk

Hiking Whiteside Mountain, exploring Panthertown Valley, and visiting frozen waterfalls. It’s nice to have all of the great outdoor assets all to yourself. And with more than 185 named summits in Jackson County alone, there’s plenty of good trails to follow.

“We call it our ‘secret season’ — a time when crowds calm down, and you have the trails all to yourself and the air is crisp, clean, and cool,” Breedlove says.

Panthertown Valley is a vast trail system of 30-plus miles in the 10,000-acre Nantahala National Forest, so hikers are well-advised to take a map on their trip, and Whiteside Mountain is a top favorite among lovers of the outdoors. It’s a hike along the ridgeline of one of the oldest mountains in the world formed some 360-to-490 million years ago when the oceans receded leaving the stunning peaks we know today as the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Even the shortest of trails, such as the 1.5-mile loop around Richland Balsam, the highest summit in the Balsam Mountains, offers spectacular gifts, such as a walk through a remnant spruce forest with its ancient, ghost-like remains.

Another easy walk is one of the best in the county. The Whiteside Mountain trail is a two-mile loop along the Eastern Continental Divide to 4,930 feet and the highest vertical drop (750 feet) in the Eastern United States. Fencing along its edge helps to prevent disaster.

For trails of a more-intense nature, plan ahead, pack your gear and set off for Yellow Mountain, a 13-mile hike with steep ascents to an old stone-and-wood fire tower. Your efforts to get there will be paid off with amazing views of the valley below and mountains beyond.

Falling Waters

While neighboring Transylvania County is known as “The Land of Waterfalls,” Jackson County boasts at least a dozen falls, among them the tallest in the state, Whitewater Falls, which is also said to be the tallest east of the Mississippi River with an amazing plunge of more than 400 feet.

Access to the falls is made via a wide, paved path which, at its end, offers great views of the falls, but if you are able, take the plunge down a set of steep stairs for views that will take your breath away. Signs at the top warn you to stay away from the falls and slippery rocks, though. “People have died here,” it reads.

For an even easier walk, Silver Run Falls is just four miles south of Cashiers and no more than a 1/4-mile walk off Highway 107. Not quite as impressive as Whitewater Falls, it’s still an awesome cascade of 25 feet into a large pool at the bottom without the dire warnings attached. On hot days, that pool can be crowded.

On a winter’s day, you may have to share the waterfalls with another person or two, but you may have them all to yourself. Just you and Mother Nature.

All major waterfalls, such as the aforementioned, as well as Bridal Veil Falls, Cashiers Sliding Rock, Looking Glass Falls and Glen Falls, are marked with forest service signs along the road. For a complete list of all waterfalls and directions, visit mountainlovers.com/waterfalls.

“With the varying elevation and ruggedness of our county, some waterfalls can be more difficult than others to find,” Breedlove notes. “For that reason, sometimes we don’t list all of them in an effort to ensure we keep our visitors on the trail and not bushwhacking to a remote place where it might be best not to wander.”

Rest Your Head

At day’s end, Cashiers offers a range of overnight accommodations, from its one chain hotel, Hampton Inn, a Hilton property, to boutique hotels and short-term vacation rentals at places like Sapphire Valley , a popular ski resort with several restaurants just minutes from downtown Cashiers.

· High Hampton Resort has reopened under the guidance of the Bealle family, owners of the famed Blackberry Inn in Walland, Tenn., who head the hospitality arm at

High Hampton. The resort has long been a favorite, private getaway for Southerners and continues this tradition after reopening in April 2021.

· The Wells Hotel Cashiers  has rooms, suites and cabins situated on five acres in the heart of downtown Cashiers with easy access to the only brew pub in town, Whiteside Brewing Co.

· Hotel Cashiers , formerly a roadside motel, has been beautifully transformed into a boutique mountain inn with a shop for wine, artisan meats and cheeses, and gifts, many locally made.
