The History of The Candlelight Tour

PEP’s annual Christmas Candlelight Tour of Historic Homes was preceded by the Historic Home Tour sponsored by the Review Board. By 1996, PEP sponsored the first annual Candlelight Tour which became PEP’s largest fundraiser over the years. Each Candlelight Tour typically consists of five or six residences, one church, and one business over two days on the first weekend of December. There were several years that PEP was unable to procure properties for the tour and a couple of years during the height of the COVID pandemic that tours were not offered. Preserve Historic La Porte will be reinstating the Candlelight Tour in 2023.

The Candlelight Tour offers visitors the opportunity to tour a number of La Porte’s unique historic properties. The properties are decorated for Christmas and feature live musical entertainment. Also featured is a Victorian carriage ride. Each homeowner is presented with a hand-drawn framed sketch of their home’s exterior. And a history of the property is included in the tour brochure.

The Candlelight Tour has proved to be very popular with the public, with visitors coming from outside the La Porte area, with as many as 1,500 visitors on a single weekend. Many thanks to member Pam Ruminski who has chaired the Candlelight Tour committee for many years; and to member, artist, and Landscape Architect Don Bowman for drawing pen and-ink sketches of the over 100 buildings that have been showcased on the Christmas Candlelight Tours.

An amazing history lesson was given prior to seeing the catacombs. It sets the stage perfectly because once you eventually walk down your already well aware of the reasoning why they are there.

Great tour! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, as well as, fun! It was so interesting to learn more about NYC from the cultural and religious perspective. I grew up in the city but I had no idea this was something available to do at St. Patrick’s. I definitely recommend this tour!

2023 Neighborhood Projects Helped Enhance the Beauty, Character, and Charm of the Historic Old Northeast

2023 was a very busy year for the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association (HONNA). Here’s a look at just a few of the many project highlights that helped make our neighborhood so unique.

Why It’s Important to Preserve and Protect the Unique Character of the Historic Old Northeast

Annual study highlights challenges facing the old northeast’s lush street tree canopy, new city ordinance prevents “van lifers” from residing on residential streets, properties that put the “historic” in the historic one – pan american building, 145 10th avenue north, “centennial home” flag and garden banner now available for 100+ year old homes, old northeast tree canopy is our green crown jewel, what’s at the heart of the old northeast, local artist “puts his touch” on old northeast monument, shop the honna store.

OUR MISSION

Representing over 2,500 residents, the Historic Old Northeast Association’s diverse leaders, members, and volunteers serve as custodians of our neighborhood resources. We are dedicated to maintaining the Old Northeast’s unique, historical status as one of St. Petersburg’s premier neighborhoods and a great place in which to live, work and play.

HISTORY OF HONNA

The Historic Old Northeast, established 100 years ago, was the city’s first organized neighborhood. The first neighborhood organization, the North Shore Neighborhood Association, was founded in 1974. In May 2002 the name was changed to reflect the prevailing use of the term “Old Northeast” when referring to the neighborhood.

A Board of Directors, which meets monthly, provides Association oversight and coordinates many of the social and business activities. HONNA membership is available to anyone living in the neighborhood. Members who are residents or own property have voting privileges on HONNA matters brought before the general membership.

HONNA engages residents through events and communications of our neighborhood news, history, and accomplishments.

HONNA supports and advocates for many types of preservation. All in an effort to maintain our high quality of community.

Neighborhood involvement to ensure the safety and security of our community.

Invest in Your Neighborhood

Our neighborhood relies on the time and efforts of our residents to improve the character of our neighborhood and our quality of life. From planting a tree to a donation of time and dollars, all gifts are valued and welcome.

Invest in Your Neghborhood
