Dogs at Exbury Gardens

Our top dog friendly days out in Hampshire

From the New Forest, to beaches and amazing gardens, Hampshire is a dog walker’s delight! We’ve compiled some of our favourite walks below including museums, castles, landmarks, farms, and even a few dog friendly activities in Hampshire too. Plus, we’ve got details on one of the region’s best dog shows.

  • Explore the ancient past with your dog at Butser Ancient Farm ! The Farm welcomes dogs on short leads across the site, where you can step back in time and visit Stone Age houses, Iron Age Roundhouses, a Roman Villa and Saxon Hall. Nestled into a beautiful corner of the South Downs National Park, with several nearby footpaths to explore, the farm has lots of hands on activities to try out and is also home to sheep, goats and pigs (so dogs do need to be kept under close control). Please note that during special events only assistance dogs are allowed at the farm.
  • Dogs on short leads are welcome throughout the gardens and outside the tearoom at Chawton House – where water bowls are available for them. Assistance dogs are allowed in the House and Garden. All dog owners are asked to clean up after them and use the dog bins provided.
  • The Brickworks Museum is very dog friendly! As long as the dogs are on leads and well-behaved there are few places they can’t go. There is even space inside that isn’t in the cafe so you can enjoy a snack alongside your canine companion.
  • All of the explorers of the natural world celebrated at Gilbert White & The Oates Collections were big dog lovers and the museum is no different! Dogs are permitted in our 25 acre grounds on a lead, and to all outside events. The Museum also hosts an annual Dog Show in September to celebrate our four legged friends.

Dog in canoe New Forest Activities

  • All dogs are welcome at God’s House Tower . Drinking bowls are available in the cafe located on the ground floor
  • Dogs are very welcome on The Watercress Line and even travel for free! Hop on and off the steam or heritage diesel trains to enjoy all four of the stations and take a country walk from Alresford, Medstead, or Alton, you can also find water bowls at every station.
  • Dogs have been welcomed to Exbury Gardens since its opening in 1919. Treat your four-legged friends to special dog ice cream in the restaurant, walks through our expansive gardens with water bowls enroute and even a train ride! Pooches must be kept on short leads but nowhere is off limits.
  • Enjoy exploring the 440 acres of Itchen Valley Country Park with your dog and relax with refreshments in their dog friendly Woodland Cafe. If your four legged friend loves nothing more than to run through muddy puddles, fear not! You can clean them up in the dog wash located to the side of the Kingfisher Barn toilets.
  • Beaulieu National Motor Musuem is at the heart of the New Forest, Beaulieu is a multi-award-winning family day out with something for everyone, even dogs! The Palace House Grounds & Gardens are an idyllic place to take a stroll with your four-legged friend and even head down to watch the river flow with spectacular views!
  • Bucklers Hard welcomes dogs in the village, Museum, Captain’s Table Tea Rooms and on the River Cruise, but must be kept on a lead.
  • Hire a dog trailer at Cyclexperience and take your canine friend on a New Forest bike ride!
  • Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the site of Portchester Castle.
  • Countryside Canine’s is a new initiative launched by Hampshire’s countryside service. It aims to let people know where they can walk their dogs off a lead and where we would like dogs to be on leads or on the paths. Coloured way marking discs will denote the areas and more information can be found on the website. Such as Staunton Country Park,
  • River Hamble Country Park,
  • Lepe Country Park,
  • Royal Victoria Country Park,
  • Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

The best dog-friendly beaches in Hampshire

Bembridge beach, isle of wight.

Bembridge Beach

Best for rock pooling: One of the good things about this beach on the Isle of Wight is that there’s a cafe at either end so you can replenish your caffeine needs before and after your walk. Bembridge Beach itself is a mixture of sand, pebbles and rocks with enough room for your pooches to run free. Whilst the dogs are exploring the island smells, you can collect sea glass and perhaps a fossil or two. At the lifeboat station end, you can continue along the beach or opt for the coastal path.

Why your dog will love it: As the tide recedes, you and your pups can explore Bembridge Ledge, a chalky outcrop that exposes plenty of rock pools. Be on the lookout for shrimp, starfish, sea anemones and crab – just make sure no noses get nipped!

Taddiford Gap Beac, Lymington

Taddiford Gap Beach

Best for avoiding crowds : A little off the beaten track, this sand and shingle beach in Lymington is usually quiet and offers a safe expanse of water if doggy paddling is on the cards. Your dogs might even enjoy scrambling up the low sandstone cliffs. Careful as you go, but if you make it to the top, you’ll have even better views of the Isle of Wight. There aren’t any amenities here, so be sure to pack some doggie treats.

Why your dog will love it: If your pup is the type who prefers his own company, then Taddiford Gap might be the answer. It’s not unheard of to go the length of the beach without meeting another furry friend. Keep an eye on the tide though as you can easily get cut off at high tide.

Calshot Beach, Calshot

Calshot Beach

Best for clear waters: Another dog-friendly beach in Hampshire with impressive views of the Isle of Wight, as well as of the Solent and Southampton, this long sand and shingle beach will give your four-legged pals ample space to chase their tails. There are some beautiful salt marshes that extend beyond the beach, where migratory and overwintering birds reside, and Henry VIII’s Calshot Castle looms nearby. You’re likely to find water sports enthusiasts occupying parts of the water.

Why your dog will love it: The beach has won some awards for its cleanliness and the water is sparklingly clear. It’s perfect for a dip to cool down after chasing a stick – just watch out for those kite surfers and kayakers.

The best dog-friendly walkies in Hampshire

The new forest.

The New Forest

Best for variety: There are simply too many great walks in the New Forest to fit in this one paragraph. With such an incredible range of options available when it comes to dog walks in Hampshire, you may find yourself tuckered out before you’ve even scratched the surface. Be sure to avoid getting too close to livestock such as cattle and ponies, and, when possible, keep to the main tracks to prevent spooking any sensitive wildlife including deer and birds. If you fancy getting out on your bikes and having Rover run alongside you, contact New Forest Activities , who can help you with this and other dog-friendly activities in Hampshire.

Why your dog will love it: There are so many possibilities when walking in the New Forest. Will you take a stroll in the woods, by the sea, over the beautiful heathland the area is renowned for, or take a dip in a river or stream? The potential is seemingly endless.

Noar Hill, Selborne

Noar Hill

Best for wild open spaces: Get away from it all for a while with one of the most uplifting Hampshire walks with dogs. As you stroll through an area that is a favourite amongst local dog lovers, you’ll have access to the South Downs as well as almost 50 acres of nature reserve and SSSI to explore. The chalky landscape is dotted with ridges and banks which make ideal habitats for all kinds of plants and critters. There’s woodland too, but make the most of the long grasses and rough paths and stretch those legs, seeing if you can spot the junipers and pyramidal orchids along the way.

Why your dog will love it: The vast array of chalk downland flowers throughout the warmer seasons will provide the dogs with plenty to sniff and the fluttering butterflies will keep them entertained.

Selborne Common, Alton

Selborne Common

Best for woodland: Maintained by the National Trust , Selborne Common is an inspiring area of beech, oak, ash and hawthorn woodland, and flower-filled meadows that span 250 acres. In a region saturated with wildlife, you’re likely to spot many a variety of butterfly as well as woodland shrews, and buzzards and turtle doves overhead. Visit the pretty Wood Pond too where you can spot dragonflies and let Fido cool his paws off.

Why your dog will love it: Walk through the sunny glades and reach the wooded area known as the Hanger. Let the dog lead the way and choose either the Zig Zag or the Bostal paths, both of which are likely to be filled with silver-washed fritillaries, white admirals, purple emperors and brown argus butterflies. Once you reach the top, you’ll be treated to satisfying vistas of the village of Lythes, the Weald, and the Downs of Hampshire.

The best dog-friendly days out in Hampshire

English heritage.

Hurst Castle and Carisbrooke Castle

Best for a dog-friendly picnic:  Just because   you’re into your history, it doesn’t mean that your culture-loving canine has to miss out. Of all the dog-friendly places to visit in Hampshire, the sites managed by English Heritage are among the most popular with dog lovers. There are castles, abbeys and beautiful gardens to explore – all that’s asked is that you keep your furry pal on a lead and that you clean up after him. Why not try Hurst Castle in the New Forest with its commanding sea views, or Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight with its Norman keep and Princess Beatrice Garden? For help getting to the Isle of Wight, read our blog on dog-friendly ferries to the island .

Why your dog will love it: The fresh air and being by your side for the whole day will do your dog the world of good. We doubt that his tail will stop wagging as you scale castle steps or explore house gardens. Plus, he doesn’t even know about the picnic treats you brought along for him yet!

Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway, Exbury

Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway

Best for less mobile dogs: With 22 miles of largely flat pathways that delve into landscaped woodland and wildflower gardens, you and your dog can take it at your own pace at this beautiful riverside spot . There are devoted doggy days throughout the year at this pet-friendly garden , where you can benefit from reduced canine ticket prices, and you’ll find water bowls and dog bins located throughout the gardens. If you or your pal are feeling a little leggy, hop on the steam train with Fido on a lead and take in your surroundings from the comfort of a covered carriage.

Why your dog will love it: Dogs are welcomed into Mr Eddy’s restaurant, where they can even get treated to some scrumptious canine ice cream!

Blackgang Chine, Isle of Wight

Blackgang Chine

Best for whole family excitement: If you want to spoil the entire pack and don’t want to leave the four-legged family member behind, then Blackgang Chine , aka the Land of Imagination, is the dog-friendly attraction in Hampshire to visit. With the Underwater Kingdom, Pirate Cove, Cowboy Town and Restricted Area 5 comprising just a fraction of what there is to see and do here, kids and dogs alike will have smiles on their faces the entire day. When the need for an adrenaline rush overwhelms you, head over to the Cliffhanger and the Waterforce, before heading to the Pirate Barrels and Snakes and Ladders for the little tots in the group. Just make sure you take turns staying with the dog!

Why your dog will love it: Feeding off your positive energy, your furry pal will revel in your excitement and enjoy all the sights and sounds at this clifftop attraction with spectacular sea views.

The best dog-friendly places to eat out in Hampshire

The hampshire bowman, bishop's waltham.

The Hampshire Bowman

Best for spending the whole day:  Known as a dog’s pub that also lets in people, The Hampshire Bowman will welcome you with open paws. The two resident dogs can show your pooches the ropes, pointing out the huge garden which backs onto fields and woods – perfect for a post-lunch saunter. When it’s time to head inside, there are hoses to wash off muddy paws, water bowls for refreshment, and two open fires to warm chilly fur. There are treats on the bar for well-behaved pups, and for dutiful humans, there’s a list of six real ales, ten traditional ciders and a great pub menu.

Why your dog will love it: There are plenty of spaces for your pup to explore at this wonderful Hampshire pub. The extensive garden will provide lots of sniffs and the cosy interior is the perfect place to nap.

The George Inn, Finchdean

Walks near The George Inn

Best for nearby walks:  This 18 th -century tavern   can be found   nestled in the middle of the South Downs, meaning there are a plethora of walks available to you either before or after a welcoming pint of local ale. Jack the German shepherd will welcome you and yours inside where he’s happy to share his water bowl and basket of dog biscuits. Following Jack outside, you find the huge, lawned garden with poo bags next to the bins. There are even dog-friendly events at this Hampshire pub - see below.

Why your dog will love it:  Your pup will adore this dog-friendly pub in Hampshire, largely due to the fun summer garden parties it holds. If you time it right, you might even be lucky enough to visit on Pet Photo Shoot Day!

The White Hart, Pennington

The White Hart

Best for treating dogs like royalty:  Kia the pub husky welcomes you to The White Hart , an establishment recommended by the Dog-friendly Pub Awards . There are three areas to choose from when settling down: the bar, the lounge and a nice, big restaurant. When the weather’s fine, enjoy the lawned garden with its covered patio area, before heading back inside to find treats, water bowls and even dog toys to play with. Humans can choose from a traditional pub menu that includes mixed grills, burgers, and fish and chips, making it a great place to dine out with your dog .

Why your dog will love it:  Head over on a Sunday and order some food and your furry pal will get a free bowl of turkey. Hot-diggity-dog!

Five of the most dog-friendly areas in Hampshire with amazing walking trails

Some routes even have water bowls, dog bins and dog friendly pubs

  • 05:00, 4 FEB 2023

Generic picture of a man walking dogs

There are so many miles of walking trails to explore along Hampshire's coast and countryside that we're spoilt for choice when it comes to dog-friendly places to roam. It's good to know before you embark on your next adventure however which areas welcome our furry friends to keep them out of trouble.

Countryside Canines from Hampshire Countryside Service has some guidance to help dogs and their owners enjoy the countryside responsibly. Hampshire's countryside sites are colour coded into red, amber and green ‘paw print’ zones.

These zones are a straightforward way of showing people where dogs can exercise on and off lead. Green is where dogs are allowed off lead. Amber is where there are restrictions in place.

READ MORE: Free days out for families in Hampshire as half term approaches

It might be that dogs must be kept on leads because of grazing animals, or people and dogs must stick to the paths due to ground nesting birds. Other amber areas are BBQ and picnic sites.

Dogs are not allowed at all in red areas. It might be because it's a sensitive wildlife site or livestock is present.

The National Trust also has its own paw print rating system too - best is three to one which is simply standard. We've included five areas below where is safe to take your dog with amazing walking trails the beautiful Hampshire countryside.

New Forest National Park

New Forest National Park is home to 29 dog-friendly trails and is described as a "dog's paradise." The 140 miles of safe off-road tracks and 40 miles of coast will be a full on sensory experience for your pooch.

For a longer walk, you can try the Bucklands Ring Trail. Here you can walk through Roydon Woods Nature Reserve, where dogs can walk through on a lead, over the beautiful Setley Plain and then onto Buckland Rings, the site of a former Iron Age hill fort.

For a shorter walk, follow the Whitefield Moor route, which is just 1.6 miles long. On this route you can enjoy the gorgeous Ober Water, where a stream runs through the forest, and take in the beautiful scenery. There is even a shorter loop to follow too if you wish which still has plenty of wildlife on offer.

The Lyndhurst Parish Walk is an 8.5 mile circular route taking you around the outside of the ‘capital’ of the New Forest and past some amazing dog friendly) pubs. These include The New Forest Inn and The Waterloo Arms.

If you prefer coastal walks, most New Forest beaches only allow dogs during the winter months, but a few allow them to have fun in the sea and on the sand all year round (except the main UK summer holiday). You can find out more information about the rules for each beach, and more dog friendly walks, at the New Forest dog walking page.

Mottisfont estate woodlands

The area is maintained by the National Trust. The diverse Mottisfont estate is a two pawprint area on a varied walk through ancient woodlands, historic farmland and along the crystal-clear River Test. This walk takes in part of the Test Way and showcases some of the best of Hampshire countryside.

The route is best walked anti-clockwise and dogs must be kept on a short lead at all times while you visit.

The Vyne i s a Grade I listed 16th-century country house in the parish of Sherborne St John, near Basingstoke. The house was first built circa 1500–10 in the Tudor style and is just for humans, there's plenty of outside space for you to enjoy together.

The Vyne is a one pawprint rated place as dogs are welcome here but facilities are limited. The estate at The Vyne is classified as a nature reserve so please keep your dog on a lead at all times.

This is to make sure they don’t chase other animals, run off into the undergrowth or jump into the lake. Dogs on leads are welcome outdoors everywhere except the children’s play areas. This means that you are free to explore the garden, the wetlands and Morgaston Woods together.

They’ll be able to stretch their legs in the car park and walk in the nearby open spaces, depending on the season.

A generic photo of a dog looking up at its owner while on a walk.

Hinton Ampner

Hinton Ampner is a large estate set in the heart of the South Downs with 200 hectares of woodland to explore. This means miles of beautiful walking routes to follow and is a perfect place to bring your dog year-round.

Hinton Ampner is a two pawprint rated place with water bowls, dog bins and dog-friendly walks. You’ll be able to take your dog into some areas, but not everywhere. If there’s a food and beverage outlet, you can have a cup of tea with them most likely outside.

Dogs are welcome in the gardens, shop and second-hand bookshop on short leads, and on all the estate walks. They must kept under close control whilst in the kitchen garden however, as the produce grown there is used in the food sold in the café.

Only assistance dogs are allowed in the house and café but there is plenty of outdoor, under cover seating for you to sit with your dog. Water bowls are provided outside the café and there is a dog waste bin located by the entrance to the estate walks by the church.

The estate is a fully functioning commercial farm so it is important to heep your dog on a lead at all times around the garden and livestock, and under close control on the wider estate.

Hayling Island

Hayling Island combines all the attractions of a traditional seaside holiday along with excellent sporting and leisure facilities. Windsurfing was actually invented on Hayling Island and as well as events linked to this popular activity there are also many opportunities for sailing.

It is also rich in military history and visitors can discover a fascinating World War II Heritage Trail which takes in many significant historical landmarks. Dogs are not allowed on the blue flag beaches from 1 May to 30 September, but are allowed at the following locations:

From golf club to Ferry, From funfair to Creek Road at Eastoke, at Eastoke from Bosmere Road to lifeboat station. On the grass: Above the road parallel to Ferry, Between funfair & Eastoke Corner. They are allowed on the promenade but on leads only.

From 1 October to 30 April dogs are allowed on all beaches on the island.

The Best 3 Dog Friendly Beaches in Hampshire & 2023 Restrictions

Are you on the lookout for top dog friendly beaches in Hampshire? If the New Forest just isn’t cutting it, why not head down towards the Hampshire coastline with your pets? The dog beach scene down here extends all the way into Dorset, though for this guide, we’re keeping it strictly Hampshire!

If you’ve ever strolled down the coastline in Hampshire and have fancied booking out beach huts – or just want to know the hotspots where local dog owners take their pooches – then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve based our list on the best dog friendly beaches near Hampshire on our own experience, as well as on reviews and opinions of local people and tourists.

While you’re at it, be sure to narrow down your search for Hampshire pet friendly cottages through our guide! Let this be your one-stop shop for finding a sand stretch or two that you and your four-legged friend can enjoy.

When are dogs allowed on beaches in Hampshire?

Hampshire is generally a very dog friendly region! That means you shouldn’t find it too difficult to narrow down Hampshire dog friendly beaches. However, during your search, make sure to look into dog restrictions or dog bans before you make your trip down to the coast.

The three beaches we list in this guide will accept dogs. However, be careful to keep your pet on a lead in designated areas. The last thing you’ll want is to go for a walk on the coast and realise there is a dog ban in place!

Keep reading for full information. Why not check out pet friendly pubs in Hampshire , too?

The Best Beaches in Hampshire for Dogs

Calshot beach.

Calshot Beach is a lovely sandy stretch and shingle beach for you and your dogs to enjoy all through the year! There are commanding views of the Isle of Wight from afar, and there is something of a nature reserve towards the salt marsh. If you are on the search for a dog friendly beach zone with lots of variety, this really is one of the top places to start.

There is a lot of history to Calshot Beach, too, with Henry VIII’s Calshot Castle looming ahead. This area is also very popular with watersports enthusiasts, meaning that across the more popular times of the year, you’re likely to find plenty of people enjoying the surf.

You’ll find that this Hampshire dog friendly beach backs onto perhaps the largest port zones in England, and you are only a short distance from the city of Southampton. The water here is blissful and sparkling, and the beach itself has won awards!

  • Seasonal Restrictions: No
  • Lifeguards: No
  • Address: Calshot Beach, Southampton, Hampshire, SO45 1BS
  • Facilities Near By: Car park, food and drink, toilets

Old Portsmouth Beach / Victoria Pier

Portsmouth is, of course, one of the biggest cities on the coast, and it’s firmly on the UK map of port locations! However, Old Portsmouth is also well-known for being popular with dogs and walkers alike. Of all the dog friendly beaches Hampshire has to offer, this sandy run tends to be one of the most popular for angling – so when you’re not out and about with dogs, be sure to bring a rod and bait with you!

It’s worth remembering that there are restrictions to this dog friendly beach, meaning you won’t be able to visit between May and September. Otherwise, like many other beaches in Hampshire, you can feel free to come down for a sandy trot or two with your pooch!

One of the top beaches for connections between the city and nearby Portsea Island, this is also likely to be one of the main beaches experienced swimmers head towards. That’s because the currents here are really strong! There are no lifeguards here, so do look for other dog friendly beaches close by for safer stretches.

  • Seasonal Restrictions: Yes (May to September)
  • Address: Old Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO1 2LY
  • Facilities Near By: Cafes, fishing, dog bins

Milford on Sea

This delightful shingle beach connects to the Bournemouth Coast Path and is amazingly dog friendly! Milford offers one of the top dog friendly beaches in the area for those who don’t like getting too bogged down in the sand. It’s also well connected to nearby Hurst Castle, meaning that you and your dogs can take a look deep into local history and heritage when you’re not walking down the seafront.

Milford’s beach may not be the most tourist-friendly as it is largely replete with pebbles! You likely won’t need to bring your bucket and spade here. However, like many other dog friendly beaches in the region, Milford Beach will happily welcome pets across the year. That said, do always keep a lookout for any signs or notices on the areas and places you visit. You may need to keep all dogs on leads when walking down shingle straits. Be sure to look up this information before you travel in case you’re unsure.

Otherwise, Milford makes for a great connection between Hampshire and Dorset. It’s only a short distance to Bournemouth where there are country pubs and shops. You can even see the Isle of Wight from here, making it one of a handful of dog friendly beaches Hampshire has to offer with overseas sights.

  • Address: Milford on Sea, Lymington, Hampshire, SO41 0PT
  • Facilities Near By: Toilets, food and drink, nature spots

Dogs are welcomed with a letter from resident dog, Ruby and receive a feeding bowl, mat and treats, with the affable staff happy to dog-sit whilst you dine.

Enjoy indulgent afternoon teas, along with well-executed modern European dishes and wake up to a hearty buffet-style breakfast to set you you up for the day.

Langrish House, Petersfield, Hampshire

a large green lawn in front of a large house
