Between tradition and modernity, the Bellevue distillery is the first distillery in the Caribbean to have committed to protecting the environment. Rum Road Trip to Guadeloupe

  • February 21, 2024

Self-Drive The Butterfly Island

Reading time: 9 minutes 24 seconds

In the Caribbean, between Dominica, and Antigua is the beautiful island group of Guadeloupe. Rum is made in three out of its six islands; Basse-Terre, Grande Terre, and Marie-Galante. The two main tropical volcanic islands, Basse-Terre and Grande Terre create a butterfly shape (l’île Papillon). The islands are separated by a narrow channel the rivière Salée (the salty river) which you drive over.

Guadeloupe’s geography contrasts dramatically. On the east is the Grande-Terre, a limestone plateau with rolling hills, and more developed. However, on the west, Basse-Terre is defined by the active volcano Grande Soufrière at 1,467m, the highest in the Lesser Antilles. Its surrounding National Park is a haven of beautiful waterfalls, rivers, and ravines and is home to tropical plants and wildlife.

Upon arrival, whether by sea or air, a wild adventure awaits. If you’ve explored distilleries in Martinique, you’ll notice the contrast. While both share French influences, Guadeloupe exudes a rustic farmyard ambiance, like stepping back in time. In stark contrast to some state-of-the-art complexes in Martinique.

Some like to relax on arrival and acclimatise after a long-haul flight. Others might want to jump straight in, pick up their hire car, and get over to Marie Galante. With a dozen rum producers to explore, it could take a week to get around them all and include other local sites. And, like touring in Martinique, it’s probably best to group daily visits by location. Hiring a car is a must, and make sure to reserve it ahead to avoid delays on arrival.

The sugarcane harvest here is from February to June, which is the best time to see the cane juice rum distillers in action. We start the road trip on the island you will likely arrive at Grande Terre, where there are two rum producers to visit. On the Atlantic facing east coast is Le Moule, a picturesque beach town and surfer hang out. Kreol Bar is a good spot for lunch.

damoiseau distillery

Distillerie Damoiseau

Home to the Damoiseau rum brand, Distillerie Bellevue-Hurel has been producing Rhum Agricole and aged blends of cane and molasses rum since 1942. It’s a self-guided free tour around the site with some maps, signs, and a collection of old machinery with a small museum displaying local artifacts.

The actual distilling takes place on modern large column stills. It has a shop for buying rum and gifts at a good price. This can often be a first or last visit before departure. About a 15-minute drive on the opposite side of Le Moule, heading towards beaches, boat trips, sipp a Planteur’s punch at Saint-François, or gazing out at Pointe des Chateaux awaits.

Rhum Gwadinina

Rhum Gwadinina

Domaine de Letaye is the smallest producer you’ll visit in Guadeloupe. It’s a family-run artisanal distillery. A guide will explain the process in French, and possibly in English. It’s a small facility and hands-on. Tasting is in the shop where you can buy their rum and gifts.

Jumping over on the ferry now to Marie-Galante, it’s well worth staying over at least one night. Marie-Galante is a step back into another era, a slower pace of life. It’s not a big island, a 15-minute drive from Père Labat to Distillerie Bielle in the middle of the island, and similar to Distillerie Bellevue. So, the distilleries are manageable on the same day.

Distillerie Bellevue

Distillerie Bellevue

Bellevue Distillery is the largest on the island and Guadeloupe’s largest exporter. A restored windmill refurbished, it’s a modern distilling setup, and with that, it’s one of the first green estates in the Caribbean. You can see the ruins of the old distillery and displays explain how rum is made in a free tour. There’s a shop and tasting balcony to try the rum and enjoy a rum punch. The Rums are often blends of molasses and Rhum Agricole.

Distillerie Bielle

Distillerie Bielle

Bielle Distillery has been producing rum since 1910. The distillery manually cuts fresh cane stems in harvest season to make fresh cane juice unaged white rums, aged rum, and rum liqueurs. They specialise in cask-strength rum and also make white rum from grey sugarcane. The free self-guided tour has a video presentation, you can taste the rum, and shop for souvenirs.

Distillerie Poisson

Distillerie Poisson

On the west coast, the Poisson distillery produces probably the island’s best-known rum, Rhum Père Labat. It’s the smallest distillery on Marie-Galante, and its history as a sugar estate goes back to 1860. They grow a portion of organic sugarcane and have two organically certified white rums. The tour is free and self-guided with info boards and a small tasting at a cabin shop to finish.

Rhum Rhum PMG is a collaboration between Italian independent bottler Velier, a grappa distiller, and Poisson distillery. It’s registered as an individual distiller but doesn’t have its own visitor experience as such, you could contact them directly for an appointment. They use a Muller pot still and work with local farmers for their cane to juice.

Before leaving Marie Galante, you should take in the beaches of Saint-Louis, enjoy a beautiful sunset with a Planteur punch or Ti Punch and savour this timeless part of the Caribbean.

marie galante sunset

Take the ferry back and you are not far from the island of Basse Terre. You’ll drive over the rivière Salée and the landscape changes. Here you’ll visit the highest concentration of distilleries, but it’s more rural. You can take either the N2 road north to Sainte-Rose, or south on the N1 towards Trois-Rivières. We’ll start our list of distilleries north to south. If you can drag yourself off the stunning beaches of Cluny, Plage de la Perle, or Grand Anse, there’s only one distillery you can visit in the north of Basse Terre.

On the outskirts of Sainte-Rose, the Reimonenq distillery has been producing rum since 1916. They have cane fields and also buy sugarcane from 70 independent growers. The tour is busy with visitors and coach tours, it’s self-guided (English and French), and there’s a tasting at the end upstairs.

They have Musée du Rhum, a rum museum to highlight the history and heritage of Guadeloupe which includes old artifacts, tools, machinery, a collection of sailboats, and hundreds of butterflies.

Distillerie Bonne Mère

About 10 minutes drive south of Sainte-Rose is Distillerie Bonne Mère. But the site doesn’t allow visitors, so you’ll need to try their rum at a bar elsewhere. As one of the largest rum distilleries in the West Indies, it makes rum using molasses from Marie-Galante which then goes into several blended rum brands and independent bottlings; Bonne Mère, Fajous, Rhum Negrita, Rhum Old Nick, Rhum Contrebande, and LMDW’s Transcontinental Rum Line Guadeloupe.

cascades

Travelling south now on the N1 the first distillery you’ll come to Distillerie Montebello, 30 minutes’ drive from Reimonenq. However, at this point, foodies and nature lovers could drive inland over to Bouillante and stay on the west coast for a night or two. On the way, you enter the national park with hiking trails and cascades. Or snorkel the Pigeon Islands, and enjoy the hot spring outlets on the West Coast.

There’s a chocolate museum nearby at La Maison du Cacao. Have traditional creole food at La Côte Oust, or sip a Planteur’s Punch or Ti Punch at Sunset B with fresh seafood as the sun goes down. Then, you could continue anticlockwise around the south of the Basse-Terre. Either way, you choose to do the loop, it’s best to check the opening times, and lunch breaks to help co-ordinate your visit, you’ll find time and sites on our handy Guadeloupe Map

Distillerie Montebello

Distillerie Montebello

At Petit Bourg, the Montebello distillery was founded in 1930. It’s one of the island’s smallest distilleries, family-owned and committed to traditional methods. Much of the sugarcane is cut by hand, and it’s the only distillery in Guadeloupe fuelled entirely by steam.

During the season you’ll get close to the whole production as working distillery made the old-fashioned way. The free 1-hour tour can have a guide that speaks English as well as French. And, you’ll get to taste several of their rums at the end.

Distillerie Papa Rouyo

Distillerie Papa Rouyo

Papa Rouyo at Goyave is the newest distillery in Guadeloupe, launched in 2021 – but, has links to the past. It’s a modern setup and artisanal farmer-first producer. It is also the only distillery in Guadeloupe that uses a pot still, rather than a traditional creole column still. Therefore, it produces a heavier pure sugarcane juice rum. It’s in a warehouse venue shared with an artisan brewery. You pay for a tour, but many say this is the highlight tour to visit.

Mabi Punch is a range of macerated soaking of fruit in rum, and sources rum from Papa Rouyo. It’s bottled based on a traditional Guadeloupean punch that was made island-wide.

Distillerie Longueteau

Distillerie Longueteau

At Capesterre Belle Eau, the Longueteau family has been producing agricultural rum on this estate since 1895. It’s said to be Guadeloupe’s only 100% self-sufficient distillery, producing blue and red sugarcane from plantations at the foot of the Grande Soufrière range. The guided tour in French visits the main house, a short walk to the sugarcane plantation, into the distillery for production methods, and finishes at the shop for a tasting. They produce white rum, aged rum, limited editions, punches, and liqueurs under the Longueteau and Papillon brands.

Rhumerie Karukera

Rhumerie Karukera

Next to Longueteau, and established in 2005, Karukera produces white rum and aged rum from other Guadeloupe distilleries. They mature and finish rum primarily in ex-cognac casks. Karukera’s unique microclimate can increase the ABV as the rum ages. Visitors comment on the cellar, the variety in their shop, and the good prices for their rum.

On the drive to the next distillery is a recommended stop at the House of Kassaverie, where you can enjoy savoury cassava dumplings.

Distillerie Bologne

Distillerie Bologne

In the southern seaside town and region’s capital city of Basse-Terre is Bologne distillery. It’s the oldest in Guadeloupe since 1887. On the slopes of the Grande Soufrière volcano, Bologne is the only distillery in Guadeloupe that farms black sugarcane. You might have seen the Bologne Black Cane bottling.

It was also the first distillery in Guadeloupe to release an organic rum and focus on organic farming practices and single cane varietal bottlings. You might get a tour guide that speaks both French and English. And, bottle prices are better here than duty-free or at a local supermarket.

Afterward, Basse-Terre has a few spots for lunch, dinner, or a Rhum punch – try Puncherie-JPJF Restaurant or Puncherie JPJF, both are near each other.

Guadeloupe

There are many other places to see on your road trip when in Pointe-à-Pitre we recommend The Memorial ACTe, also called MACTe, it’s a modern museum of historical exhibits on the Caribbean’s slave trade & indigenous people as told from a French perspective. It provides context to how these islands came to be.

As an epic adventure draws to a close, foodies can make sure they don’t miss some of the tasty delicacies found at roadside local vendor stands, stores, or restaurants. Try the local coconut sorbet, and kassav pancakes stuffed with coconut. There’s Tourment d’amour, a pastry filled with coconut, or guava jam. And, coconut doukoun cake or Le Pudding Antillais. Why not try them with a local Guadeloupe rum, pair them, and see which are the best?

Before leaving, perhaps if you haven’t filled up on rum from the distilleries (best prices), there are a couple of rum shops near Pointe-à-Pitre like Cave à rhum in Baie-Mahault if you’re looking for a special edition.

We recommend researching your trip dates for any seasonal highlights like:

  • Caribbean Rum & Food Festival, Guadeloupe 24-25th February 2024
  • Terre de Blues Festival in Marie-Galante 18-20th May, 2024
  • The West Indies Green Festival, Le Moule, 22-23rd June, 2024
  • Creole Jazz Festival in August
  • Guadeloupe Carnival in January

Distilleries often have a lunch break, tours are best reserved, and check nearby facilities as locations are rural.

Guadeloupe rum, among the best in the world!

Guadeloupe rum, among the best in the world!

A real ‘national drink,’ rum has been produced in Guadeloupe for more than three centuries. Only a few distilleries are still in operation, and here is an overview of the plantations.

While here, how can you not take an interest in the production of rum and  the cultivation of sugar cane, two integral aspects of Guadeloupe’s culture and landscape? Sugar cane now covers one-third of the agricultural area of the archipelago and is used exclusively for the production of this spirit. Harvesting takes place from February to June.

There are two types of production: agricultural rum, the most prestigious, is obtained by fermentation and distillation of sugar cane juice; and industrial or traditional rum, which is derived from the fermentation of molasses. In both cases, it takes about ten kilos of sugar cane to make one litre of rum.

In the archipelago, nearly all the distilleries offer tours of their facilities.

Marie-Galante has three renowned estates: Bellevue, Bielle and Poisson-Père Labat. The others are in Basse-Terre and Haute-Terre: Bologne in Basse-Terre, Montebello in Petit-Bourg, Reimonenq in Sainte-Rose, Damoiseau (Bellevue-Hurel Distillery) in Moule, and Longueteau in Capesterre-Belle-Eau. Most of them have the distinction of still being family-run businesses.

Cruise to the best rum tours in the Caribbean

The Caribbean is inextricably linked to rum, whether its the island of Nevis (considered the birthplace of the modern drink) or the world’s oldest commercial rum distillery  (found in Barbados), there's no shortage of islands to sip on the sugarcane spirit. You can, of course, plan your own rum tour as you island-hop the Caribbean, or seek out a cruise that puts top rum distilleries on the itinerary. Here are seven places to taste, tour and enjoy the Caribbean's favorite spirit.

A woman with curly hair sips a cocktail from a coconut shell with a pink straw. A sailboat can be seen gliding across blue water in the background.

St. Maarten

Topper’s Rhum Distillery  gives visitors a brief history on rum production while strolling through the 6,000-square foot distillery and lab. Afterward, belly up to the bar for unlimited tastings of their portfolio, which includes white, spiced, coconut and mocha, as well as samples of rum cake. While you're there, you can bottle your own rum to take home. The distillery is open 9am to 4pm daily; tours run daily on the hour from 10am to 3pm and cost USD$20 per adult.

At the  Sint Maarten Distillery  not only can you tour and sample their signature Soualiga Handcrafted Rum, but you can do a comparison tasting of other Caribbean rums. Contact the distillery for prices and times.

Clifton Estate Rum crafts a two-year-old dark rum that’s infused by hand in small batches with natural ingredients including orange, honey and a secret blend of natural island spices. Fill your own bottle and get it engraved at L&L Rumshop , a serious shop with more than 200 brands on the shelves.

To truly immerse yourself in all things “rum, rhum and ron”, attend a session of Mark’s Rum Tasting to explore the various styles and flavor profiles to discover which one(s) really pique your palate; tastings last 1.5 hours and are bookable through his site.

Saint Lucia

St Lucia Distillers , launched in 1971, is the only rum producer on this lush island founded by the French. During the 3.5-hour tour, you’ll learn the process of turning sugarcane into rum and sample some of their 25 offerings. Their finest is Chairman’s Reserve, a spirit sourced from forgotten casks misplaced after a fire in 2007 that almost destroyed the blending facility; it’s amassed somewhat of a cult following among rum devotees.

Bush rum reigns on this island nation, an overproof style infused with indigenous herbs and fruits whose original intent was as a tincture for medicinal purposes, though it’s more of a recreational liquid today. Sample iterations from papaya to lemongrass to coffee at the new Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski , or sip the potent spirit straight or in cocktails from the “Barmacy” menu at RumFire Bar .

Spend an afternoon at an open-air Cooking Caribbean class nestled atop a tropical rainforest where you’ll not only make (and eat) Creole chicken, fried plantains and rice and peas but glean the recipes from affable host Daria for rum liqueur and coconut rum cake. Classes last 3.5 hours and prices vary depending on the menu.

As on other French Caribbean islands, rhum agricole is the main booze made here. Fermented and distilled from freshly-pressed sugarcane juice, this style of rum is funky and vegetal and perfect in a simple-yet-addictive Ti Punch made with lime and cane syrup.

You’ll find the popular drink at Distillerie Bologne , located on a 300-year-old cane plantation, which makes white, gold, silver and aged varieties. Distillerie Bologne is also the only distillery on the island that cultivates black cane, a lost variety that's used for their ultra-aromatic, concentrated Black Cane Rhum.

Tours are offered Monday to Friday at 10am, 11am and noon and Saturday at 10 and 11am; price is € 5.50 per adult which includes a rhum cocktail.

Distillerie Damoiseau ’s expressions include a white, amber and aged rhum (like XO rum) and matured six years in used Bourbon barrels. (Hours vary per day, but are typically 8am to 5:30pm).

Le Musée du Rhum at the Reimonenq Distillery  offers an intriguing peek into rum thanks to its exhibitions and historic distillery equipment. The distillery is open 9am to 5 pm daily, closed Sunday.

Saint Barthélemy

St. Barth's is known for swanky hotels, a yacht-filled harbor and designer everything; it’s also home to the bar with the largest collection of rum in the Caribbean (and one of the largest in the world). The Rhum Room is an intimate, 14-seat space with 770 rums dating back to 1850 from all over the region. Snag an oceanfront lounge chair or table in the sand at the Hotel Manapany and order the Caribbean Boticcelli, a libation shaken with Diplomatico Rum, muddled melon, pineapple and lime, topped with Prosecco.

The official name of the neighboring island of Nevis is Saint Christopher Island and home to the  Brinley Gold Shipwreck Rum from the St. Kitts Rum Company , made in white, spiced and flavored versions like mango, lime and vanilla.

Find the spirit at various beach bars on the island like SALT Plage on White House Bay, where you can lie on a hammock suspended over the water and sip a Jumbie – a spun-frozen West Indies’ concoction of spiced rum with pineapple, orange, cherry and grated nutmeg.

An introduction to the distilleries and rum manufacturers in Guadeloupe

An introduction to the distilleries and rum manufacturers in Guadeloupe

The archipelago of Guadeloupe is located in the French West Indies, north of Martinique and Dominica and south of Antigua. It is made up of six islands with the two main ones – Basse-Terre and Grande Terre – fanning out like the wings of a butterfly. Between them runs a narrow channel, the Rivière Salée. The islands located in the south of the archipelago are Marie-Galante, La Désirade and Les Saintes.

With a footprint of 590 km2, the butterfly’s right wing, Grande-Terre, is a limestone plateau which is home to dry plains surrounded by low-lying hills, known as the ‘Mornes’. The highest peak stands just 177 metres tall.

Basse-Terre stands out for its elevated landforms and the many rivers and ravines which criss-cross the island. Its peak is the active volcano, La Grande Soufrière, which rises to 1,467 m and is the highest summit in the Lesser Antilles. Its centre is mostly clad with a dense, damp forest. Basse-Terre covers 848 km2.

Marie-Galante is located around forty kilometres from Guadeloupe. It is named after one of the three caravels – the Maria Galanta – sailed by Christopher Columbus, who discovered it. It is commonly referred to as the ‘Grande Galette’ or big biscuit, due to its landform and its flat shape. It covers a land area of 158 km2.

La Désirade is 2 km wide by 11 km long and is located 8 km from the eastern tip of Grande Terre. The island takes its name from the joy expressed by Christopher Columbus when he discovered the land he had so ‘desired’ to find, after several months at sea.

Lastly, Les Saintes, situated 10 km south of Basse-Terre, has two main islands – Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas. Terre-de-Haut boasts a magnificent bay, ranked among the three most beautiful in the world.

The following is an overview of the distilleries and rum manufacturers spread across the three main islands.

Distillerie Damoiseau – Grande Terre – Le Moule Distillerie Bologne – Basse Terre – Rivière des Pères Distillerie Longueteau – Basse Terre – Capesterre Belle Eau Rhumerie Karukera – Basse Terre – Capesterre Belle Eau Distillerie Montebello – Basse Terre – Petit Bourg Distillerie Reimonenq – Basse Terre – Sainte Rose Punchs Mabi – Basse Terre – Goyave Distillerie Papa Rouyo – Basse Terre – Goyave Distillerie Bonne Mère – Basse Terre – Sainte Rose Distillerie Bellevue – Marie-Galante – Capesterre Distillerie Bielle – Marie-Galante – Grand-Bourg Distillerie Poisson – Père-Labat – Marie-Galante – Grand-Bourg Sucreries

Distillerie Damoiseau – Grande Terre – Le Moule

The only distillery located on Grande-Terre, it is home to the Damoiseau family who has been producing white agricultural rums along with blends of agricultural and molasses-based rums to produce mature rums since 1942. Damoiseau farms 58 hectares of sugarcane and sources the remaining 75% of its sugarcane requirements from independent farmers. A total 12,000 tonnes of sugarcane are crushed annually at the Le Moule facilities, yielding 1,500,000 litres of pure alcohol. Twenty percent of production is drunk locally and the main export market is France, which alone accounts for 70% of production.

The Bologne distillery has been based on a sugarcane plantation stretching over the slopes of the Grande Soufrière volcano and down to the Caribbean Sea since 1887. Bologne farms 148 ha of sugarcane but also buys cane from independent farmers. It processes 15,000 tonnes of sugarcane a year, producing 94% white rum and 6% mature rum.

Bologne is the only distillery in Guadeloupe that continues to farm black sugarcane on its land. Originating in Barbados, it gradually fell by the wayside due to its low yields. Bologne chose to keep it because it lends their products a distinctive array of aromatics and hallmark stamp. Bologne is the first distillery in Guadeloupe to release an organic rum, and its 148 hectare of land are certified High Environmental Value (HVE) level 3. It prioritises environmentally-friendly farming.

Bologne markets 58% of its volumes locally, with the rest exported mostly to the French mainland (24% of output).

Distillerie Longueteau – Basse Terre – Capesterre Belle Eau

guadeloupe rum tour

Since 1895, the Longueteau family has been producing agricultural rum on this estate. François Longueteau, the current incumbent, is assisted by his two sons, François and Nicolas, who manage the cellars and distillation respectively. This is Guadeloupe’s only 100% self-sufficient distillery, producing blue and red sugarcane that come entirely from plantations at Domaine du Marquisat de Sainte-Marie located at the foot of the Grande Soufrière mountain range. Its selection runs the gamut from white rums, column-strength, mature rums and limited editions to punches and liqueurs which enthusiasts will recognise under the Longueteau and Papillon brands.

The distillery farms 70 ha, producing 7,400 tonnes of sugarcane and 2,500 hl of pure alcohol. 57% of the rum produced is marketed within the archipelago and 38% is shipped to mainland France. The Caribbean, Andorra and Belgium absorb the balance.

Rhumerie Karukera – Basse Terre – Capesterre Belle Eau

guadeloupe rum tour

In 2005, at a time when mature rum production in Guadeloupe was still extremely marginal, Grégoire Hayot used the experience he gleaned during his tenure with Jean-Luc Damoiseau modernising the Damoiseau distillery to resurrect the Karukera brand, established in the 1970s. Sensing that developing mature agricultural rums was the way forward, he set out to ‘sell’ Guadeloupe’s image as a provenance-driven rum producer in global markets. He established his rum-making facilities at the foot of the rolling foothills of the Grande Soufrière volcano in the marquisate of Saint-Marie.

Karukera produces white rum and mature rum from distillates that Grégoire Hayot sources from Guadeloupe distilleries. It then handles the maturation and finishing stages defined in PGI Guadeloupe rum production specifications. Marketing volumes total 120,000 bottles annually.

Distillerie Montebello – Basse Terre – Petit Bourg

guadeloupe rum tour

Founded in 1930, the Montebello distillery was taken over by the Marsolle family in 1965. The fourth-generation of family distillers is now at the helm.

One of the distillery’s defining features is that it produces rum in the old-fashioned way, despite the higher overheads involved in using traditional methods. The rum season therefore begins between mid-November and the beginning of December, when all the other distilleries are dormant in the aftermath of the cyclone season. From December to the end of February, the cutting machines have yet to spring into action and the sugarcane is cut by hand. Montebello farms 40 ha of sugarcane, with the balance bought from independent farmers. A total 70-75% of its production is made from hand-harvested sugarcane. The distillery crushes 8,000 tonnes of cane a year.

The Montebello distillery is also the only one in Guadeloupe fuelled entirely by steam. Since 2016, Grégory Marsolle has made strides in production of premium white rums, focusing on the choice of varieties and lengthy fermentation times. The inventory comprises 60% white rum and 40% mature rum. Core export markets are located in Europe.

Distillerie Reimonenq – Basse Terre – Sainte Rose

guadeloupe rum tour

The Reimonenq distillery has been producing rum since 1916. Léopold Reimonenq has skilfully run the distillery founded by his father and his uncle since 1959. During that time, he has constantly innovated and experimented. One of his designs is the heat exchanger on the distillation column which provides incredible control over distillation temperatures. The property owns and farms 20 ha but Reimonenq also buys sugarcane from 70 independent growers. A total 4,300 tonnes of sugarcane are crushed annually, yielding 1,800 hl of pure alcohol.

Léopold Reimonenq still sets great store by the quality of the sugarcane and the fact that it never lies on the ground – a significant amount of soil could undermine the quality of his rums. So he sets up a table in front of the crusher where the freshly-cut sugarcane is placed. The distillery boasts an impressive stock of 2,000 barrels, a proper ‘war chest’.

Concurrently with this, Léopold Reimonenq has created a rum museum to promote the history and heritage of Guadeloupe. His collections include ancient utensils for growing sugarcane and producing rum, sailing ships, Guadeloupe clothing and an impressive collection of insects.

Reimonenq’s marketing strategy focuses on mature rums. Despite this, white rum is the leading category by volume, but there are fewer white rum labels than are traditionally found in other distilleries.

Guadeloupe continues to be its main market, followed by mainland France, Belgium, Andorra, Switzerland and Italy.

Les punchs Mabi – Basse Terre – Goyave

guadeloupe rum tour

Mabi was founded in 2004 by Marie-Anne Billy and her two daughters Lory and Ludmilla Lurel. Mabi uses locally grown fruits and agricultural rum to produce punches that mirror the Caribbean ‘terroir’ and showcase the region’s traditions and heritage. The local fruits – coconut, mango, passion fruit, star fruit, ginger and apricot, to name a few – macerate for several months, sometimes up to two years, until they fully integrate with the rum and give it its colour, perfume and flavour.

Mabi strives to protect the archipelago’s trees, many of which have been felled or are dying. The Mabi tree, the company’s emblem, is one of the trees that has been sacrificed. Its bark was once used to make an energy drink.

All the punches are hand-made, at the property. Some of the fruits come from the garden. This dynamic team is driven by a desire to create and to do things well.

Mabi markets 8,000 bottles within the archipelago and ships 12,000 bottles to France and Belgium.

Distillerie Papa Rouyo – Basse Terre – Goyave

guadeloupe rum tour

Papa Rouyo is the nickname given to an ancestor of the Galli family, which has ventured into production of authentic rum. Papa Rouyo is the only distillery in Guadeloupe which uses a pot still.

Since 1906, Papa Rouyo farmed a few hectares of sugarcane as a tenant, on land belonging to a prominent manufacturer from the north of Grande-Terre. He bought the agricultural land from the industrialist after years of legal wrangling. In 2018, his grandson, the owner of spring water bottling facilities in Guadeloupe and the local brewery Lekouz, decided to transition from simply growing sugarcane to producing his own rum. He recruited the help of a few experts and installed two pot stills to produce the only pure sugarcane juice rum distilled this way in the archipelago. The entirely automated distilling work shop is equipped with a 2,200-litre wash still and a 1,100-litre spirits still. By sorting the distillation heads and tails as well as the ‘seconds’, the pot still produces a fatter, unique and novel style of pure sugarcane juice rum. The first white rum, dubbed ‘Le Rejeton’, was released in 2021.

Distillerie Bonne Mère – Basse Terre – Sainte Rose

Here, traditional rums are made from sugarcane molasses bought from the Gardel sugary refinery in Le Moule and Grande Anse on Marie-Galante. Every year, approximately 22,000 tonnes of molasses are fermented and distilled here. The distillates are used to produce Bonne Mère, Fajous, Negrita, Old Nick and Contrebande rums, but also Madras punches. The distillery belongs to the La Martiniquaise group and boasts an extensive ageing cellar.

Distillerie Bellevue – Marie-Galante – Capesterre

guadeloupe rum tour

Nestled in the heart of the largest sugarcane estate on Marie-Galante, and adjacent to a superb restored windmill, the Bellevue distillery is the largest on the island. With its sights squarely set on modernity, it is fitted with state-of-the-art, high-performance equipment. Another aspect that sets it apart is its 100% clean production facilities, making it the first eco-positive estate in the Caribbean.

The Bellevue distillery is Guadeloupe’s largest exporter, producing in excess of 900,000 litres of rum a year. It belongs to the Martiniquaise group. The distillery’s director, Hubert Damoiseau, also produces a range of mature rums under the ‘Domaine de Bellevue 1821’ label.

Distillerie Bielle – Marie-Galante – Grand-Bourg

guadeloupe rum tour

Founded at the end of the 19th century, the Bielle distillery was taken over in 1975 by the Bielle distillery operating company (SEDB), currently managed by Dominique Thiery. The 5,000 tonnes of sugarcane processed are sourced from independent farmers on Marie-Galante. Current production totals 3,000 hectolitres of pure alcohol, equating to just over 495,000 litres at 59% ABV. The distillery produces white rums, mature rums and agricultural rum-based liqueurs. One of its specialities is cask-strength rum. It also makes a white rum from grey sugarcane.

The inventory held in the cellars comprises 60% white rum and 40% mature rum. Bielle markets 85% of its rums in the local market and a balance to export markets including France, Switzerland, Belgium and Japan.

Distillerie Poisson – Père Labat – Marie-Galante – Grand-Bourg

guadeloupe rum tour

The Poisson distillery produces Père Labat rum. Established in 1860, the estate was originally a sugar refinery, then became a distillery at the turn of the 20th century. In fact, the original copper pot still is still in the factory. This is the smallest distillery on Marie-Galante, producing around 300,000 litres of rum at 59% ABV a year.

Three years ago, the Poisson distillery decided to hive off some of its fields for growing organic sugarcane. Two organically certified white rums with ABVs of 52 and 60% were recently released as limited editions.

Deux sucreries complètent le paysage

guadeloupe rum tour

Established in 1845 and located in Grand Bourg, the Grande Anse sugar refinery is a major economic player on the island of Marie-Galante. It processes 100,000 tonnes of sugarcane every year.

The Gardel sugar refinery, which was created in 1870 and is situated in Le Moule on the island of Grande-Terre, produces between 400 and 450,000 tonnes of sugar a year, most of which is exported.

The molasses from these two sugar refineries are distilled by Bonne Mère on Basse-Terre.

Pere Labat 2010 (Limited edition 70 years Velier)

In the heart of the Caribbean, a terrestrial paradise conceals one of the most renowned distilleries in the region: that of Rhum Père Labat. This famous brand owes its name to the monk, botanist, and engineer Jean-Baptiste Labat, whose considerable work contributed not only to the economic and cultural growth of the islands but also to the development of an exceptional rum. Between history and heritage, Rhum Père Labat has delighted aficionados of the precious nectar for several centuries.

The story of a talented and passionate monk

Arriving in Martinique in 1694, Jean-Baptiste Labat had no idea he would become a key player in the evolution of rum production in the Caribbean. Originally from Paris, this Dominican monk had been sent overseas to evangelize local populations and teach the basics of European civilization. It was here that he discovered the botanical riches and traditional know-how of the islands, especially regarding sugarcane and rum.

A major contribution to rum distillation

With his engineering and botanical skills, Father Labat soon introduced significant technical improvements to rum-making processes. By carefully observing traditional distillation methods and combining them with his scientific knowledge, he developed a more efficient still, which produced a more refined and aromatic rum. This major innovation in distillation art earned him immediate fame and ensured the success of Rhum Père Labat in the Caribbean and beyond.

Distillerie Poisson, the cradle of Rhum Père Labat

Located on the paradisiacal island of Marie-Galante, the Distillerie Poisson is at the heart of Rhum Père Labat's production and tradition. Founded at the beginning of the 18th century, it has since perpetuated the ancestral expertise and original recipes developed by Jean-Baptiste Labat. In this bucolic setting filled with the intoxicating scent of sugarcane, the precious nectar flows abundantly for the delight of connoisseurs.

A carefully preserved manufacturing process

Within the distillery, nothing is left to chance. From the moment the sugarcane arrives, its transformation follows a rigorous protocol to extract top-quality juice. This is then meticulously fermented and distilled using the still designed by Father Labat, giving the rum its unique character. Finally, aging in oak barrels adds the final subtle notes, making these rums true gustatory masterpieces.

Varieties of Rhum Père Labat

To cater to all palates and desires, Distillerie Poisson offers a diverse range of Rhum Père Labat , including:

  • White Rum: This traditional rum, resulting from a short fermentation and distilled at a low temperature, is characterized by its freshness and fruity aromas. Perfect for preparing a "Ti'Punch", it also appeals to lovers of exotic cocktails.
  • Amber Rum: Aged for several years in oak barrels, this golden-hued rum has vanilla and woody notes, and an exceptional finish. It can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks, for an unparalleled moment of relaxation.
  • Old Rum: After aging for more than three years in oak barrels, this amber rum reveals the full complexity of its flavors. Rich and potent, it serves as an excellent introduction to the world of aged rums.
  • Extra Aged Rum: Resulting from extended aging, this incomparable rum delights connoisseurs with its incredible array of aromas and unparalleled finesse. Enjoying it at the end of a meal will satisfy those in search of intense gustatory pleasure.

Many other varieties exist, bearing witness to Distillerie Poisson's unparalleled expertise in rum-making and the valuable heritage bequeathed by Father Labat.

Father Labat, a key figure in Caribbean history

In addition to his engineering and distillation talents, Jean-Baptiste Labat was also a prominent chronicler of his time . Through books he published in the 1700s, such as "Nouveau voyage aux isles françaises de l'Amérique" or "Voyage du Chevalier Des Marchais en Guinée", he provides invaluable insight into the daily life and folklore of theCaribbean islands in the 18th century, as well as their botanical and cultural treasures.

A tribute perpetuated through Rhum Père Labat

Even today, the reputation of Rhum Père Labat shines well beyond the Caribbean borders, continuing to honor the extraordinary memory and legacy of this passionate and visionary monk. Over the centuries, Distillerie Poisson has continuously innovated and evolved while remaining true to tradition and ancestral recipes, thus proving that love for rum and respect for history are inseparable.

Shaped like a butterfly, the main area of Guadeloupe is actually two separate and very distinct islands (just a rivers width apart and connected by several roads); Grand Terre - the eastern island is relatively flat and quite developed across the island. If you're looking for lively places with lots going on then Grand Terre is for you. Basse-Terre on the other hand is mountainous, more sparsely populated and much more rural. We opted to spend the second part of our holiday on the west coast of Basse-Terre.

The beaches, bars & restaurants:

As mentioned above, we based ourselves on the west coast of the western island [Basse Terre] so most of my experience is around there. Top tips:

Bouillante/Malendure (central west BT) - a proper hidden gem. Couldn't recommend this area highly enough. A favourite with locals and regulars over from France. Eat at the basic, but outstanding - 'La Cote Ouest', or the more fancy 'sunset B' (with its awesome self-serve ti punch bar!). Hire kayaks and snorkels from Malendure beach and paddle over to the nature reserve tropical fish mecca of 'Pidgeon Island'.

Central Basse Terre - the various rainforest hikes and waterfall visits are all awesome. And very manageable. The high peaks are best planned for dry clear conditions. NB: It gets cold up top!

Pointe des Chateaux (Far east Grand Terre) - our one excursion to GT took us to the farthest east point and it was well worth it. We visited over a bank holiday and the long narrow peninsula out to the point was lined with families on camping trips - looked like a lot of fun. The spectacular views and mini hike at the end were well worth the drive over. For rum nerds, the exposed coastal area on the Atlantic coast is also the chosen location for many cane fields (salty air providing natural protection to the cane)

South East Basse-Terre - rum distillery heaven. The home to Montebello, Papa Rouyo, Longueteau & Karukera, more on them later.

South West Basse-Terre - home of the Bologne distillery. The large laid back town of Basse-Terre is well worth a visit. No beaches but a lively town with easy access to some great hiking.

Deshaies (Northwest BT) - a long slow drive to get here, but worth every mile. A community of small sand floor shack restaurants set just back from a piece of paradise. The beach (below) was the location for the filming of 'death in paradise' and remains pristine and undeveloped.

The Distilleries:

Guadeloupe has a set of regulations (Geographical Indication [GI]) that must be followed in order to label as Rhum de Guadeloupe. Cocktailwonk has brilliantly covered these (and other rum GI & AOC) here . One significant difference from the renowned appellation d’origine contrôlée ( AOC) of its sister French Overseas Department of Martinique is that Guadeloupe allows the use of discontinuous distillation (pot stills).

As is sadly so common, the last 250 years have seen a significant decline in the number of distilleries on the islands of Guadeloupe - from over 70 in 1775 to about a dozen today. I covered the fascinating distilleries of Marie Galante in my previous article ( here ). The majority of the remaining distilleries on the main islands are situated on Basse-Terre, with only Damoiseau and the tiny artisan distillery of Gwadinina located on the eastern island of Grand-Terre.

I was fortunate to visit all those on Basse-terre. Here's a few tips & highlights:

guadeloupe rum tour

Longueteau -

A family-owned and run distillery set in absolutely beautiful grounds (see the lead article photo of their main residence).

Longueteau grow the majority of their own cane which you can see on the tour of the distillery. Farming themselves rather than buying cane from farmers on the island offers incredible control over the quality and easy management of the cane varieties. This has led them to recently start releasing single field/plot (generally single varietal) rums. These are beautifully bottled and a very exciting way to compare the difference between cane types (a little expensive IMO but cool nonetheless).

The distillery is very geared up for tours, with good reason given the field-to-glass approach and beautiful grounds. You need to pre-book the tours at a small cost, which are offered in different languages, and end with an instructed tasting of many of the range of rhums. Probably the best (and most 'spouse-friendly') tour of all the distilleries.

Karukera rummery , next door to Longueteau, was set up in 2006 as an aging house initially focussed on building up a portfolio of well-aged single cane variety Longueteau rhums. Now a well-established brand in its own right and no longer limited to just Longueteau rhums, Karukera is located in a unique microclimate which unusually results in increasing abv as the rum ages.

guadeloupe rum tour

Montebello - Home of the legendary Cuvée The Bolokos, family-run Montebello distillery is well worth a visit. Tours are only in French but are free and end with a tasting of several of their rhums. (sadly, and predictably, none of the rare Bolokos was available at the distillery).

The tour was a genuine journey through a working distillery and we were able to get up close with every step from crushing to aging.

Working it's way through 8,000 tonnes of cane each year, the impressive old steam engine crusher is a cool thing to see.

Montebello's rhum is aged in a giant stack on metal shipping containers - hot stuff!

Clearly a traditional distillery with close links to the town & families around it. Easy to reach and definitely worth a visit.

guadeloupe rum tour

Papa Rouyo - My visit to here was a definite highlight of my time in Guadeloupe.

Papa Rouyo distillery was launched in 2021 with the very clear intent to produce modern, innovative rhum in alambic copper pot stills through a symbiotic relationship with the farmers and the terroir.

The team are oozing passion and excitement about what they are doing and a tour around the facility is clearly as much an opportunity for rum lovers to learn about Papa Rouyo as it is for the team at the distillery to share their love for what they are doing.

Originally intended to be located close to their cane fields in Moule on the eastern coast of Grand Terre, various events and complexities resulted in Papa Rouyo being established in a very cool warehouse venue shared with an artisan brewery on the east coast of Basse Terre. The modern, no-expense-spared, set up offers perfect control of the end to end process and the opportunity to learn and refine from one day to the next.

Where larger distilleries are wedded to their style and have vast production processes that are hard to change, the small scale and use of pot stills at Papa Rouyo allow them to be experimental and to try new approaches on both fermentation and distillation with every batch.

Aging at Papa Rouyo is a key focus and the team have chosen to only use new American & French barrels, along side ex-cognac casks. These are combined by the master blender to produce some very exciting results.

The combination of the climate at the distillery & aging site, along with the use of new oak, offers extremely accelerated barrel influence so it's no surprise that Papa Rouyo have been happy to release their first rhums after only a year or two.

guadeloupe rum tour

During my visit I was honoured to try the very first bottle of L’Œilleton , this is the follow up to their 2021 unaged release 'Le Rejeton' that I reviewed alongside the Habitation Velier & long rested Antipodes unaged bottlings back in February ( here ) . *I have now tasted L’Œilleton twice - a the distillery and a sample I brought home - summary review: more complex & better balanced that Rejeton. I'll definitely be searching out a bottle [86+pts]

My next article will be a side by side of aged Rhums from Papa Rouyo :-)

guadeloupe rum tour

Bologne - Sitting alone on the south west corner of Basse Terre, Bologne distillery is located in the pretty seaside town confusingly named the same as the western island ('Basse-Terre').

Immediately you are aware of the clear and deep connection to it's history and to the unique terroir of it's local cane fields (situated around the distillery on the volcanic plateau of Saint-Claude and Capesterre). Locals in Guadeloupe are unshakably faithful to one distillery, usually their local one. This runs from generation to generation in much the same way as families in the UK support their local football team. So it's no surprise that shops and bars in the south and west of Basse Terre are heavily weighted to Rhum Bologne.

Recent focus on the organic production and single cane varietal rhums are most welcome and tour of the distillery, the estate and the aging warehouse are an absolute must.

guadeloupe rum tour

Reimonenq - Located in a stunning setting on the central north coast of Basse Terre, Reimonenq is geared up for visitors and coach tours.

Don't expect anything too in depth in terms of seeing actual production but the old, eclectic collection of oddities in the 'museum of rhum' is a fun way to pass an hour.

Damoiseau - The only major distillery that I missed, as it's located away from the rest on the Northeast of Grand Terre. A reason to return :-)

Not forgetting Bonne Mère - a small sugar factory on the island making molasses based rhums and Gwadinina - a tiny family run distillery on the SE of Grand Terre.

Now closed but also worth a nose around if you're in the area are Domaine de Séverin & Gardel,

Rum shopping

Sadly, the lions share of unique and interesting aged Guadeloupe rhum seems to be bottled by independent bottlers and more easily available (and cheaper) in Europe. The bargains in on the island are the incredible unaged rhums, these are available at the distilleries or various shops around the island.

The best shops, with an excellent selection of Guadeloupe & regional rhums (and a few aged gems if you're lucky) are in the commercial district of Jarry (just west of Pointe-à-Pitre), check out Cave à rhum and PHP Trading.

Hi. I'm wondering if any experienced Caribbean travelers, or locals, would mind checking out my draft itinerary for a trip next April, which includes Guadeloupe.

There are 5 of us doing a self-organised rum tasting tour, also with a keen interest in beaches, snorkeling, nightlife and any must do sights and experiences.

We're heading South East from Puerto Rico rather than to Jamaica as, despite the allure of Appleton's etc, some of the guys are worried about safety there.

I'm thinking 2.5 days in San Juan, including distillery visits/tours and more before flying to Guadaloupe. The only way I can see to get there is a Silver Airways (yes, I've read the reviews) to Saint Martin and transfer (via Rhum Island if there's time) to Sint Maarten for an Air Caraibes flight to Point a Pitre.

Then 2.5 days in Guadaloupe visiting the agricole distilleries, including possibly a day trip to Marie Galante.

Then a ferry to Martinique for more agricole distilleries, beaches etc in a 2.5 day visit before a ferry to St Lucia for another 2.5 days and then an interCaribbean Airlines flight to Barbados . There for just a half a day (Foursquare Distillery the afternoon we arrive) and then a full day (Mount Gay tour and then beaches/snorkeling) before flying out the following morning.

I know that's rushed and we'll just be getting a taste of each island, but I'm loathe to drop St Lucia because it sounds great or any of the others because of their rumportance.

I guess we could potentially drop Guadaloupe as there'll be plenty of agricole on Martinique.

This is not meant to be a laid back, relaxing holiday. It's meant to be a full throttle adventure.

I also know that we're likely to need rental cars to maximize our time on each island and that will limit rum intake for one or more of us on any given day.

I know this won't be to many people tastes, but very keen on feedback all the same.

Seen you have posted this on forums of most of the islands, that's smart (to get some more feedback). I can only comment on Guadeloupe (including Marie-Galante) and Martinique as we travel there each year.

I did hear that Appleton is a great distillery but never been, but heard great things!

Regarding Guadeloupe:

The island is -to me- the most beautiful in your list but clearly rum is your first priority so let me focus on that: The Boulogne distillery is very much wordt a visit, same goes for Damoiseau, these are the two biggest (most consumed) brands. Nice that you found Marie Galante and their distillery. It's Rhum Bielle is considered more exclusive and at the same time one of the highest percentages of alcohol.

Regarding Martinique:

I've only visited maybe 15 distilleries of rum in my life, but Habitacion Clémant is something else. Absolutely must-visit. The gardens can be considered a museum with artworks from local artists. The experience continues through the distillery and end up with some high class smelling experience. Very professionally done. The end of the visit -of course- ends with a tasting. It was so good that I bought multiple bottles and still enjoy a Ti-Punch every weekend with this great Vieux Rhum from Clement.

Hope this helps!

I would research ferry times to Marie Galante, including how you would get to the ferry terminals at either end. It is possible to do a day trip to Marie Galante but could be quite a long journey.

"I've only visited maybe 15 distilleries of rum in my life"

Leroy, I think that puts you in the top 0.01% of people in the world and makes you a rum tour expert!

Hahaha you might be right! I was expecting more people would be as passionate as the OP of this topic.

#2 Marie Galante is very doable day trip with the ferry but an overnight stay does make it so much nicer (good restaurants, the sunset, less hurrying). All up to personal preference. I quote the op:

"This is not meant to be a laid back, relaxing holiday. It's meant to be a full throttle adventure."
