Travel Outfits: How to Look Chic When You’re Flying

Listen—I’m all about rocking a cute travel outfit when I’m heading out of town…but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing heels to the airport.

To be honest, I don’t even like wearing jeans on a plane (although I’ll occasionally make an exception if they’re REALLY comfortable jeans , or if my flight is under three hours.)

Usually you’ll find me rocking a head-to-toe set of my favorite affordable cashmere during the winter, and a lightweight loungewear set during the summer.

I often see pictures of bloggers at the airport posing next to their cute pink luggage wearing like…wedges and a mini-dress. HARD PASS. How is that even comfortable? When you’re en route to the airport (and your final destination) it’s all about feeling comfortable.

For this reason, I decided to put together a little guide to cute travel outfits…featuring things that you’ll actually want to travel in , whether you’re heading out for a winter getaway or a girls trip .

Because believe it or not, it’s possible to rock comfy loungewear, leggings, or a jumpsuit and still look SUPER chic, as long as you style them properly (especially my favorite faux leather leggings .)

Below are a handful of great travel outfits I found while trolling IG—and the exact things you can buy to replicate them.

(Also: if you’re also on the hunt for stylish carry-on luggage or if you need some good go-to travel toiletries…I got you covered.)

Chic Travel Outfits

Here, I’m sharing a handful of my go-to travel outfit pieces. These are all items that I think you should have in your closet regardless of how often you go on a getaway, but they just so happen to be particularly comfy choices when going on a plane.

These picks will of course depend on how long your flight is and where you’re headed, but overall, I think they’re practical for travel days.

The only caveat here is that I know a jumpsuit isn’t exactly ideal if you’re going on a long-haul flight—however—I personally don’t mind wearing them on planes because they’re so comfy and not really that difficult to slip in and out of when you need a bathroom break.

If jumpsuits aren’t your jam, there are plenty of other ideas in this post that should work for you, like a cute matching sweatsuit or leggings and a leather jacket. Without further ado, here are the staples I’d recommend having on hand for travel days.

This post gave me a more clear idea of what I will wear when travelling and I especially loved the part where you mentioned the all black and all white monochromatic looks .

I do not think I would wear white on a plane. No to the belly sticking out as well. I do like the stretchy pants and sneakers.

Why would anyone wear a jumpsuit on a plane? The toilets are used by hundreds of people, now you want to pull down the top part of your clothes and have it dangling somewhere near the toilet, while you’re sitting on a toilet that exposes the part that gets wee on when the seat is up? Eeu that’s all kind of germ wrong!! But I do love the little 3/4 joggers! Def looking for some of those for my next long haul (when this pandemic is over!)

I Travel 5 Times a Year—These Easy Outfits Have Never Once Failed Me

As a semi-recent  Los Angeles transplant, I've made so many travel plans over the past two years to take advantage of my new West Coast life, whether it's an international flight to  Tokyo or multiday road trip to Sea Ranch, just north of San Francisco. And when I was living in New York City, a quick four-day trip across the Atlantic to  London or  Paris felt like a breeze. Then there are the long-haul flights I've done from L.A. to Monte Carlo and from Orlando to Hong Kong that take up to a full day of travel. And I've done all this with just a carry-on , mind you, so it's safe to say that I'm kind of a travel and packing expert. This is why I rounded up 20 of the best travel outfits if you're sitting on a plane, in a car, or walking 10 miles in a day to explore your vacation destination. 

In theory, your vacations are filled with a never-ending supply of chic new outfits that are more than deserving of a few Instagrams, but the reality is that your  travel outfits need to be equal parts stylish  and  comfortable. Yes, achieving that balance is possible, and we have the stylish looks of the below fashion girls to prove that looking good and dressing functionally can coexist.

They are durable, made to withstand the elements, and come in handy when you start sweating from all those steps you're getting in. A track jacket is a great piece to wear over a T-shirt or tank. Simply add some fun jeans and a colorful bag, and you'll feel like a street style star wherever you are.

A sheer white top is a godsend for those extremely hot travel days. Also, I've worn this black cotton maxi skirt on countless trips. It's one of the best travel items I own thanks to the breezy fit and elastic waist. 

Cutout Dress + Sandals + Net Bag

If it's more of a beach vacation, you definitely want to travel with some comfortable sandals and a larger tote that can fit all your beach-day belongings. I find that these net bags fold very flat in a suitcase, but they can fit a seemingly endless amount.

I normally travel a lot and love to share some of my tips on how to build the perfect fashionable travel wardrobe to make fashionable travel easy.

I believe that dressing in a stylish way for travel is just as comfortable and easy as flying in an old t-shirt and cargo pants or sweats.

But one of these two options makes a better first impression! Don’t worry, I’m not asking you to wear anything too fussy or high maintenance.

In fact in the image below I’m wearing a t-shirt and pants, but I’ve elevated my style through the print on my top and by adding silver shoes.

I’m wearing comfy airy pants (similar here and here ) and I make the outfit more stylish with Rollies shoes ( similar pair here ).

When it’s a bit cooler I will add a short stylish jacket too in stretch fabric like this one .

Choose a pair of flats that are comfortable.

Bear in mind that you are likely to have to take your shoes off to go through security. So, you may prefer to have a slip-on style rather than laces.

5. Travel t-shirt

T-shirts can be the basic core of any wardrobe, and your travel closet is no exception. You can wear them to travel in and team them with shorts and skirts when you arrive. Or, you can wear it instead of a pajama top to sleep in.

I’d stick to quality fabric without any logos on the front, so you can team with lots of pieces from your suitcase. Opt for something you can dress up with a statement necklace or scarf, or down just with sneakers and shorts. I like the interest created by the draped wrap style of the top below .

6. The perfect travel dresses

Do you prefer traveling in pants, or do you prefer the feeling of coolness and freedom you get from a comfortable dress?

If you do choose a dress, I would look for one in flexible, stretchy fabric such as jersey so you don’t feel restricted on your journey, just like this dress from COS .

You could wear it with sneakers for your journey and then dress up with heels or sandals when you reach your destination. You can always take a belt to create different daytime and evening looks.

7. Flying clothes: Travel cardigan

No matter where you are traveling, you are likely to need a cover-up in case it gets a little chilly on your journey, or for when the sun goes down in the evening.

8. Lightweight women’s jacket for traveling

You won’t want to be taking too many jackets on vacation with you as they take up suitcase space, so make sure the one you do choose is comfortable and versatile.

Of course, the best travel jacket for you will depend very much on where you are going. While a blazer will be perfect for the south of France, for example, you are unlikely to want such a dressed-up option on a safari in South Africa.

If you choose a blazer, I think you can wear it beautifully with pants and a pair of sneakers for the plane. Then, for a night out on vacation, you could team up with sandals or heels.

Natural fiber like linen will crease, but I think that’s part of the charm of linen blazers. Or you could opt for a piece with a wool mix for cooler climates, or in a polyester mix if you are worried about it creasing.

For traveling, I would stick with a knee-length or a midi. You don’t want trailing skirts to be getting stuck anywhere while you board and deal with your luggage.

Sylvia, Where did you get that amazing tshirt you are wearing in your picture? I’m not a tshirt person but I would wear that one in a minute!

I got that from Zara a few seasons back.

If one is flying long-distance and has a problem with not just ankles but also feet swelling from extended sitting, be sure to wear shoes that allow for that. When I travelled overseas in winter months, I used to wear low-heeled boots that were a half- or full-size bigger, filled up with a couple layers of heavy socks. If my feet swelled in flight, I could always take off a pair of socks to accommodate them. (This layering also kept my feet warm and blister-free while doing a lot of walking after arrival.)

Just to let you know the clothing links for luxe dress and travel pants don’t work and an amazon search isn’t bringing them up.

One of the key ways I come up with flight outfit ideas is by creating an interchangeable capsule wardrobe . Not only does it help with simplified packing, which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase, but I can revolve what I wear on the airplane to sightseeing, nature excursions, and even nights out on the town.

A travel capsule wardrobe should be composed of soft, yet packable fabrics that can compress and be organized into packing cubes . And each item should mix and match with each other, be super versatile, so that means I can pack less but still cover all my activities. And, of course, have nice styling details too!

Now that we’ve given you some real-people inspiration, check out some of my favorite flying outfit ideas from yore, along with the seasons I wore them!

Fall can be a tricky time of year. I try to avoid going full-on winter and in this case, I was traveling to Thailand during October, so knew I’d shed things like scarves for an airy tank top upon landing.

I love this look because it’s clean and easy to put together. The pants have a give and the coat is fitted but I can move my elbows and arms with ease.  A scarf is particularly topical for fall because when there’s a slight chill it instantly warms me up.

While I tend to wear simple colors, I still like a bit of rock n’ roll edge to my look every so often!  

For this airplane outfit, I was traveling during the wintertime from the US to England and wanted some warmth, so I wore a leather jacket and layered a shirt underneath that. I then put on my fave jeans and then slid in some funky low-heeled ankle boots. I was comfy and cozy I tell you!

This beauty is my new fave airplane outfit that’s awesome for spring (or early fall)! 

The look is super stylish but seriously comfortable. I prefer movement and stretch in my pants when I fly and these Spanx faux leather leggings have give in the elastic waistband and knee area. They’re kinda my go-to’s now!

Good flight shoes are a must so I seek out flexible flats, comfy boots,  or slip-ons that don’t pinch my feet and can be easily removed through security. These Tory Burch Minnie flats were a new buy and so surprisingly comfy and I walked from terminal to terminal with no problems!

Editor’s Winter Favorite: All-Black Chic Airplane Outfit

This is by far, my FAVORITE and best outfit for airplane travel during the winter! It’s warm and layered, so I can take things off/on when needed, and I still feel fashionable. 

I was actually going from cold to warm weather, so I wore my heaviest items on the plane and changed once I arrived at my destination of Bonaire. And when I say “heavy” that refers to my coat and boots. 

The secret to a capsule wardrobe is to include packable items. My coat is Anatomie, it’s well made and can compress down fairly well, and my boots were a little bulkier but I always look for ones that are as lightweight as possible. And these ones are waterproof so it can handle the elements and still look cute!

I wore this when I hit Europe in the summertime and it was a durable, adorable ensemble I remember fondly!

For me, it’s important to have a comfy flight outfit, and I usually re-wear the same outfit for travel days thereafter, whether I’m flying or taking a train. If I’ve really nailed down an outfit that works for me, then it’s a keeper! 

I swear by using lightweight pants and jacket   . It has lightweight fabrics that don’t retain moisture so I feel airy in hot climates. For a top, the sleeveless blouse comes with me for every summer trip! It’s comfortable and breathable, and I can layer it with a cardigan or light jacket if need be. 

Again, shoes need to feel right, on or off a flight, and I discovered these Skechers Mary Jane slip-ons ( which are now sold out but here’s a similar one ) because readers raved about them for years! Their memory foam insole means my feet feel cushioned all the time!

Most of my flights are between the US and Southeast Asia – so I’m usually just focused on how to be as comfortable as possible for 30+ hours. I love Vuori joggers (so soft!!) and a tank top for if I get hot with a jacket for if I get cold. I do need to step up my game when I fly in the States so I appreciate all the stylish ideas!

Love wearing my go-to and heavier items on the plane – jean jacket, white tennies for spring/summer, and Chelsea boots for fall/winter. I was able to put together plenty of fashionable interchangeable outfits and I’m so grateful that I packed light! My red eye travel outfit was perfect and included layers. I honestly think the “airplane” outfit is the hardest one of all – LOL!! Since I’m west coast based all my flights to Europe are 10+ hours so… a VERY long day of travel! The Easy Comfort” outfit is definitely my style – cute, comfortable and practical since it features two bulky and hard to pack wardrobe items – a long cardigan and boots! A variation of this look is going to be my choice when traveling to London and Croatia next spring!

I have followed Travel Fashion Girl for some time and I cannot even tell you how many times I have read about the best shoes for travel and the best bags (handbags, backpacks) that are secure and stylish. It is because of you that I discovered Travelon. This post about what to wear on the plane with accompanying photos really hits home. We are traveling to Europe at the end of this week and I had vacillated between wearing stretchy Ponte pants that unfortunately have not pockets and blue jeans. After reading some posts on Facebook and seeing these pictures (and knowing how much I rely on pockets), the jeans have won out. Plus, not having to pack them will reduce the weight in my suitcase. I bought the tee and joggers from Sexy Modest Boutique. I have traveled in them for the past year. They are comfortable, breathable, and I can create different looks with jackets, shoes, scarves, etc…I have black in both pieces. When worn together it looks like a jumpsuit which I like, but I also use each piece with my other clothing to create outfits, so they are part of my capsule. I just recently traveled to Europe and was very comfortable on the long flights (felt like pjs).

I tend to wear long dresses on flights. That way my legs are covered if it’s cold but also, I’m not too hot when I get off the plane. My go to has Spaghetti straps that I paid with a cardigan or jean jacket. That is the ultimate in comfort for me!

I wear a lounge set from Duluth Trading Co. on long-haul flights. It’s a tank top with a built-in bra, it’s very comfortable! It’s a monochromatic look so it looks chic.

I’m definitely an easy comfort kind of traveler, haha. My go-to’s are either Fabletics leggings or Anatomie pants (always stretch!) with 2-3 layers on top, typically a tank or tee with a long sleeve shirt or sweater over and optional scarf because I am always cold on the plane but hot in the airport. I’m an options girl for sure! I do try to style up with my tops though so I look put together vs frumpy.

So many good ideas. I love having a pulled together travel look, rather than just any old sweats and t-shirts that I see so much of. That way I can hit the ground running when I arrive and not have to change.

I have read and re-read so many of the blog posts. I have purchased a few items from the FB group and the TFG favorites…and I had considered myself a well seasoned frequent travel expert!

The easy comfort type is the way to go for me. I mostly travel with kids si ability to be comfortable is key. Joggers, loose T-shirt, cardigan or jacket and running shoes.

Every year I fly at least once to Europe and once to Hawaii from KY. At 72, I’ve discovered that my favorite flying outfit is is midi length sleeveless black jersey dress with knee length slits on both side seams. Flexible enough to wear as a jumper, or wear it with a scarf, add a sweater, or a jacket, or a pull over sweater. It’s easier to use the toilet on an airplane but pulling something up then pulling down pants and attempting to keep them off the bathroom floor.

Wish more of the travel clothes came in tall.

Thank you for giving me inspiration for my airplane outfit. I have been working on it for the past month or so . . . I like to be stylish, yet comfortable. Since it will be a long 36 hours of flying/travel time, I will be changing to some comfy wide leg pants for the overnight leg, but plan on being more stylish for the first part wearing my EB black Ponte pants, Departure 2.0 long sleeve white shirt, and jean jacket. Still deciding on which shoes to wear!

Jeans are not the best thing to wear on a plane. There are lots of comfy trousers with flexibility and look a heck of a lot better. Open toes is a no-no, loafers or boots better choice for footwear. Otherwise, thanks for posting cute travel outfits for all of us!

I love all of these ideas. I do not know if I am just old-school or still believe in fairytales, but I always try and be comfortable while chic. Using my Delsey Chatelet bag ( recommended by TFG) and a faux leather backpack, I keep thinking I will be invited to First Class for a glass of champagne. lol

I found scarves to be a TSA tag. They ask me to remove, so they know you’re not carrying something around your neck. Even a bandanna.

I love sleeveless, soft cotton midi dresses with a cardigan or blazer and sneakers. We fly to Italy often, so I like to look decent. I learned my lesson about wide leg pants: They touch the floor when using the bathroom! For that reason, when wearing pants, it’s best to wear skinnies or leggings.

I always travel in quality knits that will keep their shape. The picture at the top of the article looked very unrealistic. If I was wearing that tucked-in cloth blouse, I’d be a wrinkled, sloppy, uncomfortable mess at the end of a 7+ hour flight. Short hops are one thing, but I’ve yet to see someone look so fresh after a trans-continental flight.

I’m definitely a cross between easy comfort, french and rocker chic when I travel. Comfort if key, but I would prefer not to look like a slob.

There are so many comfortable clothes available, no need to go to the airport in sweats 😉

Since I don’t check luggage, my first rule is to wear the heaviest clothes. So for my flight from US to Europe in a few weeks, that means jeans, a sweater, and boots. I wish I could wear yoga pants to facilitate sleeping on the overnight flight!

Why not carry your yoga pants in your carryon and change out of your jeans before you board the flight? Or wear leggings under your jeans and then remove them? 😉

I’m traveling from Alaska to Spain and I would shoot myself if i had to travel in tight uncomfortable, deep vein thrombosis inducing jeans 🙂 Pack lighter and leave your jeans in the carryon. Wear leggings on the plane. The difference in weight is minimal.

Some lovely outfits esp like the pink. But, I wonder how did they manage , fine on the way out, but what about when they arrived….have you seen how small the plane cubicles are, and how long the impatient queues on board can be when travelling ‘cattle class’?

With the exception of the Glam Globetrotter they all seemed pretty easy to get in and out of. They’re all mostly just a nicer version of jeans and tee 😉

I love to ear comfortable but classy outfit in the plane. I have scored some upgrades a. Because I asked nicely and b. Because I looked like I was a perfect fit for Business or First Class. White London shirt and blazer or trench. Black pants and either nice loafers or boots. A scarf or pashmina. Fresh make up and hair coiffed.

I’m the Easy Comfort type, although I really enjoy being all dressed up (especially for short trips). But on a flight, especially a longer one, I prefer to be comfortable…

It would be nice to travel in glamorous outfits like celebrities but how do they deal with the lack of comfort?

Maybe they change into pyjamas for the actual flight?! Not to mention the use of stylists before getting to the arrivals hall of the airport!

My recent autumn/winter travelling outfit of choice is a grey marl jersey dress with 3/4 length sleeves, which I wear with thermal tights (from Marks & Spencer’s) and a merino wool cardigan or sweater. I don’t bother with many accessories when travelling, apart from a scarf – and obviously a coat and gloves/hat if I’m outdoors! This outfit has really worked well for me, even on an uncomfortable overnight long haul flight that was delayed by 3 hours!

Most of the outfits looked pretty comfortable…with the exception of the “Glam Globetrotter” outfit that is! The jewelry, hair, and makeup made the biggest difference from casual to chic. Sounds like we have a similar winter travel outfit – comfortable dress plus tights!

Wish I could find the ARMY Green Dress for the Beach Vacation. It’s EXACTLY what I’ve been lookn for.

We pretty much always pack at least one Lululemon item when traveling. Originally a yoga apparel brand, it now offers an impressive range of loungewear and athleisure pieces, including leggings in virtually every cut, style, and color. You'll even find work-appropriate garments, like trousers, poplin shirts, and blazers that feel like athleisure wear. The prices can be steep, but you can often strike gold in the discounted " We Made Too Much " section.

Lululemon launched its uber-popular, borderline-famous Align Pant in 2015. While we certainly like the original, the pocketed version is ideal for travel — and it's made with the same buttery-soft fabric and super-wide, high-rise waistband. We also like the slightly looser-fitting Align High-rise Jogger , which has pockets big enough to hold a smartphone .

Best for Capsule Wardrobes

The "try before you buy" option is only available for Prime members.

If you're on a budget, look no further than Amazon. The mega-retailer has many private label brands, including a very accessibly priced clothing line, Amazon Essentials. There's tons of great stuff for men, women, and kids, including wardrobe basics, loungewear, dresses, sweaters, underwear, swimsuits, and even workwear. Prime members can get their items within a couple of days (sometimes even with same-day delivery) and take advantage of the "try before you buy" perk. This allows you to order items to try on and ship them back without being charged for anything if you decide you don't want them.

We recommend prioritizing odor-resistant, breathable, and wrinkle-resistant materials, such as wool, cashmere, lyocell, performance fabrics, and cotton blends containing a stretchy fiber, like spandex or elastane. If you are travelling to/in somewhere cold, I suggest thermal underwear (spencers & leggings) are a brilliant way to keep warm, simply worn under a shirt and everyday pants.

Good idea, I was in Copenhagen back in December. It was windy, rainy and zero degrees but I was cosy in a thermal vest under my sweaters.

Regarding cross body bags, I buy the type that have metal reinforcing in the strap, bag thieves can’t cut them.

I should also say Travelon are a great brand for this type of strap.
