A customer guide to traveling with Delta

Editor's note: This article was most recently revised and updated Apr. 9, 2024 to include new information about boarding zones.

At Delta, our team of 100,000 is focused on delivering a reliable, high-quality experience and minimizing inconvenience when circumstances disrupt scheduled operations. We deeply value the trust customers place in us to get them to their destination safely and on time. That said, we also understand the journey to people and places that connect the world sometimes doesn't go as expected.

Our culture is founded on the principle of having our customers’ backs, particularly if they experience a delay, misconnect or cancellation. We stand by our commitment to ensure customers get to where they need to be on a safe and clean flight, on time and with their bags.

The below provides steps you can take to make the most of your Delta travel experience – not only during the busy holiday season – but every time you choose to fly Delta.

We remain committed to taking care of all customers – supporting every individual throughout their travel journey. Here’s what we can do to help when it’s needed:

Know Before You Go

Join delta skymiles® to help our teams better serve you and stay connected in the air.

When you  create a SkyMiles account , you get more than just miles earned toward your next trip. Your SkyMiles account ensures Delta people more seamlessly know your travel details and preferences and can aid with reaccommodating should disruptions in your travel occur. Knowing you is better for serving you. Keeping your SkyMiles profile information up to date can help Delta teams reach you quickly and allows for direct contact and updates when needed.

Additionally, customers with SkyMiles accounts can access fast, free Wi-Fi  presented by T-Mobile onboard most domestic mainline flights to stay connected throughout the journey. As part of the onboard Wi-Fi experience, Delta teams have also designed two entertainment products – Delta Sync Wi-Fi and Delta Sync seatback – that complement each other throughout the duration of a flight and give customers even more ways to enjoy their travel journey across devices. This connectivity at scale is designed to fuel our version of more personalized travel, powered by your SkyMiles Membership.

Download or update the Fly Delta app

Delta’s digital tools offer quick and seamless options to make changes to your itinerary – either in the Fly Delta app, on  delta.com  or by using our  messaging  feature for further assistance.

Most times, the app provides the same tools and flexibility as a call to our Reservations center – allowing customers to make changes in real-time while on the go. Click on the “Today” tab in the app for boarding information, upgrade status, baggage location and key self-service shortcuts like same-day changes. The tab is updated in real-time with the latest and most important information customers need to make sure you never miss gate changes or a change in boarding times.

If you’re a SkyMiles member, logging into the app with your unique SkyMiles membership number and mobile number will allow us to contact you if needed and better serve you as you travel (make sure your mobile number is updated and accurate for day-of travel!).

Turned off notifications by mistake? Find the notifications selection in your device's Settings app and ensure Fly Delta app notifications are turned on. Manage your device's sleep mode settings accordingly, too, to avoid notifications being silenced.

Make sure to keep an eye out for any emails or text messages you receive from Delta with essential updates on your flight status, travel documents and what to know before you go to the airport. (This information is also available in  My Trips .)

Passport check: Renew early and validate

If you have plans to travel internationally, make sure to confirm your destination’s passport requirements and cushion enough time to get your passport renewed. Many countries will not grant entry to a traveler unless the passport expires at least six months after the final day of travel. That said, if your passport has less than six months remaining until it expires, plan and allow for enough time to renew before you go.

A pro tip: After renewing your passport and creating a SkyMiles account, be sure to add your passport credentials into the Fly Delta app and get it verified when you are ready to check in – it’ll save time during your next trip!

Breeze through security

To speed up your airport experience, consider applying for TSA PreCheck® and opt in for Delta Digital ID when departing from ATL, DTW, LAX, LGA and JFK. Digital ID uses facial-matching technology to let customers check bags and move through security without showing a physical government ID, providing a seamless, hands-free way to navigate the airport. This technology is optional and eligible to customers who:

Have a TSA PreCheck® membership.

Have passport information and a Known Traveler Number stored in their Delta profile.

Have a (free) SkyMiles membership.

Have the Fly Delta app

Know Your Zone

Starting May 1, Delta will introduce numbered boarding zones for all flights to provide customers with more clarity about boarding sequence. Delta will still offer pre-board opportunities for customers who need extra time or assistance, followed by active-duty military, then Delta 360 Members. The boarding order will not change, beginning with pre-boarding, then Delta One or First Class customers boarding in Zone 1, followed by Diamond Medallions and Delta Premium Select customers boarding in Zone 2. See the breakdown of boarding by zone .

Customer boarding passes—including printed boarding passes and those accessed via the Fly Delta app—will reflect the new zone numbers, along with updated sequencing on airport screens and in gate announcements. Zones 1-4 will use the Sky Priority lane and Zones 5-8 will use the General Boarding lane, as they do today. Boarding lane signs will be updated to show boarding zone numbers .

Familiarize yourself with resources for customers with special needs

If you or one of your travel companions needs special assistance due to sensory, physical or cognitive disabilities, Delta and the TSA have a number of resources available to you.

  • Atlanta and Minneapolis hubs offer familiarization tours that allow families with disabilities to practice the process of traveling through an airport in preparation for travel. At MSP, customers can tour a mock cabin and meet with volunteers to ready themselves for their journeys.
  • Many airports, including Delta hubs ATL, LGA and SEA, offer sensory rooms for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families. To use a sensory room, locate a Delta Red Coat for assistance. Review more resources for customers on the autism spectrum, including a complete list of available sensory rooms, here .
  • Visit Delta.com for complete accessible travel services , including information on wheelchair assistance, service animals, dietary needs and allergies, and more.

Change or cancel your flight without a change fee

At Delta, we know that plans change. That’s why we allow customers who have purchased tickets for travel within the U.S. or traveling internationally from the U.S. to change or cancel their travel plans without a change fee. This includes tickets purchased for travel originating in the U.S. in Delta’s First Class, Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin, except for Basic Economy tickets. Note: Fare differences for ticket changes will still apply.

At the airport

Pack thoughtfully.

Remember to take anything you might need on the plane, like phones or medication, out of your checked luggage first. Lithium batteries are prohibited in checked baggage.

If your bag is delayed, proceed to the Delta Baggage Service Office in the baggage claim area, where you’ll be greeted by a Delta professional for additional assistance.

Arrive early

As a general rule, plan to arrive three hours prior to your departure time – especially on heavy travel days.

Take advantage of in-airport prioritized messaging

In Delta’s U.S. hubs, customers experiencing mid-journey disruptions may access expedited Reservations service through a dedicated messaging channel that can assist with immediate travel needs.

If you experience a delay, you may use the Fly Delta app to self-service, message our customer service team, or locate a Need Help Center where you’ll be greeted by a Delta professional for additional assistance.

How Delta people are working to support you in case of flight delays or cancellations

“care while waiting” carts at the gate.

To ease the disruption of unexpected delays, “care while waiting” carts stocked with water and snacks are often available at the gate to help refresh customers waiting on their flight. In some cases, flight attendants can also request that these extra supplies be brought onto a parked aircraft.

Vouchers for hotels, meals, ground transportation for unexpected stays

Vouchers can often ensure more comfort during uncertain or unpredictable travel. Meal vouchers will be provided at the airport to customers if a cancellation or delay within Delta’s control causes a wait of three hours or more beyond the scheduled departure time. Hotel accommodations and ground transportation will also be provided at Delta contracted facilities, based on availability, if customers are inconvenienced overnight while away from their home and the cause of the delay, misconnect or cancellation is within Delta's control.

Flight cancellations and refunds

When cancellations become necessary as a last resort, Delta Reservations specialists coordinate with our Operations and Customer Center to get impacted customers on the next available Delta flight. If necessary, we will rebook customers on flights operated by other airlines. If a customer’s new itinerary no longer fits their travel needs, Delta continues to provide full and timely refunds to eligible passengers. Customers have options to request a refund  on Delta.com. Delta teams strive to notify customers of itinerary changes as far in advance as possible. We’ll send updates directly to a mobile device or by email if this contact information is included during booking or added later via My Trips online.

A waiver allows customers to change their itinerary with no fare differences if they remain in the same cabin as originally booked. Delta most commonly issues waivers ahead of weather events that we know are likely to cause cancellations and delays – allowing customers to make sure they get where they need to go by flying earlier or later than initially anticipated. Once posted to  delta.com , customers with travel to, from or through a city listed will receive a notification of the waiver via email, Fly Delta app notifications, or SMS messaging. Customers will be guided from there through the process of making changes to their itinerary, should they choose to do so.

Traveling by air during a pandemic can be a stressful, if not harrowing, experience to prepare for. Those who must travel are contending with day-to-day travel restriction changes like new entry requirements and variable local regulations.

Delta Air Lines created a tool to make trip planning easier during COVID-19 . Here’s what you need to know about the Delta map search tool to improve your travel planning.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

Delta launches interactive travel requirements map

The airline released an interactive map tool on the Delta.com booking page that provides easy-to-read travel restriction data for all of its flight destinations around the world. The map lets travelers easily see which countries are open to visitors, open with restrictions or have restricted entry.

It also provides key information about requirements and restrictions in a chosen country. If flying domestically, a U.S.-based Delta interactive route map is available with the same type of travel restriction information.

visit delta.com

How Delta’s interactive route map works

Whether you’re using it as an enhanced Delta award map search tool to fully prepare for an upcoming award flight or simply want to stay on top of moving travel restrictions, the interactive travel map can help.

Step 1: Visit Delta.com

The map search tool is currently only available on Delta.com; however, according to the airline, it’s working on getting the tool accessible through the Fly Delta App. Click on “travel restrictions” within the banner at the very top of the screen. You also can access the page directly at this link.

An interactive world map with a legend that shows which countries are open to visitors or have restrictions in place will display. Hover the cursor over a country to see the country name.

» Learn more: How to change/cancel existing bookings due to coronavirus

Step 2: Select a destination

Click on the country for a snapshot of travel requirements. A pop-up box will appear showing the date the information was last reviewed and updated. The destination’s requirements regarding quarantine, a negative COVID-19 test result and forms/applications will appear.

visit delta.com

To read detailed information about travel restrictions and requirements upon arrival, click on “see more info.” Alternatively, you can click "see schedule" to find out which months flights are available and continue the booking process if you want.

You can also search for domestic information by clicking on the U.S. When the pop-up box appears, click on the red button that reads, “See domestic restrictions.” This will take you to the U.S. interactive travel requirements map where you can find specific state restrictions. A list view — which is located on the booking page, below the map — is also available.

You can also use the tool from a different view. If you’d like to see the travel information as a page text rather than a pop-up window, use the “Search by Origin/Destination” function, located below the map. Enter your origin location and the destination for your search, and then click “see requirements.” The information will display below the search fields.

visit delta.com

» Learn more: The best airlines to fly during COVID-19

Step 3: Read the travel restrictions for your destination

After clicking to see more information, the Delta interactive route map shows you various categories related to travel to the selected destination. The list includes information about:

Entry requirements.

Connecting flights.

Local regulations.

Quarantine rules.

Negative COVID-19 test result requirements.

Forms or applications needed.

Face covering rules.

Social distancing practices.

Local health advice.

visit delta.com

Each item on the list has a dropdown arrow to expand the section and learn details about that topic or requirement. The search tool also provides additional resources for each category, like links to official resources or paperwork in preparation for a trip.

visit delta.com

» Learn more: The best airline credit cards right now

Having all of this key travel information consolidated into a user-friendly tool can make travel planning less of a burden. A mandatory quarantine upon arrival is still far from a pre-pandemic travel experience, but being able to anticipate these restrictions can lessen frustrating surprises along your journey.

Although it’s a helpful tool during a difficult time, the interactive map should only be used for supplemental research for your trip. It might not have been updated with real-time travel restriction changes. Travel rules shift day to day as new information surfaces; always refer to real-time travel updates for your destination, directly from its governing body.

» Learn more: Six items to add to your packing list for COVID-era travel

The bottom line

If you’re anticipating upcoming travel, but are worried about staying on top of various travel restrictions, Delta’s interactive travel restriction search tool is a handy start. The best part is that you don’t have to be a Delta passenger to view different travel regulations around the world.

Delta is changing how it boards passengers starting May 1

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 12, 2024 / 12:35 PM EDT / CBS News

Delta Air Lines is changing its boarding process beginning May 1 in an effort to speed up loading passengers onto planes.

If you're flying on the airline, you'll have to know what zone number you're in to board in the correct sequence. The move is hardly innovative, experts say, and instead reflects a return to the traditional way of boarding passengers followed by most airlines.

That's because Delta is introducing numbered boarding zones for all flights, meaning that customers will have a zone number assigned to them instead of boarding groups labelled by airline status or fare class, such as "Sky Priority." The airline stressed that boarding orders will not change, but the group names will.

When Delta introduced its branded fare boarding process in 2018, it called zone boarding "a thing of the past." But the airline is now reverting to the traditional way of boarding people, in what some experts call an unusual move for an innovative airline.

Customers who need more assistance will still pre-board as usual before passengers in Zone 1, which will comprise Delta One and First Class customers. Zone 2 will include Diamond Medallion Members and Delta Premium Select ticket holders.

Delta Comfort+ customers will board in Zone 3, followed by Sky Priority in Zone 4, according to a  chart  on the airline's website. Zone numbers will go up to 8, when basic economy passengers will board.

Delta said the change is small, but could make the process easier for infrequent fliers and non-English speakers who only have to listen for a number to know when it's their turn to board. The change will also make the process less stressful for gate agents, Delta added.

Still, some travel experts questioned whether the change would meaningfully speed up the boarding process.

"They're not changing who boards when or the sequence," Clarkson University professor John Milne, an expert on airline boarding, told CBS MoneyWatch. "All they are changing is the names of what passenger group boards next."

In a statement to CBS MoneyWatch, Delta said the "simple change" will "provide customers more clarity into the boarding sequence and make the boarding process more intuitive—especially for infrequent travelers and/or customers who might face a language barrier at the gate."

Delta added, "Numbered zones will also align more closely with our joint venture and international partners, providing international customers a more simplified, consistent experience when traveling on mixed-metal itineraries. "

CEO Ed Bastian addressed the change on the company's first quarter earnings call Wednesday. "When you have a number and you're standing in line, we are all trained to know when it's our turn," Bastian said.

Superficial changes?

The change is fairly superficial, Milne said, noting there are other changes Delta and its competitors could make to boarding processes that would make them more efficient.

The airline still prioritizes passengers with airline status or who paid for a higher class fare on a particular flight. Instead, it would be more efficient to board passengers based on where on the aircraft they are seated, Milne said.

For example, boarding window seat customers in the back half of the plane first would speed up the process. "That way you would minimize some of the congestion," he said.

Delta instead assigns passengers to boarding groups based on their loyalty to the airline and ticket prices.

Travel expert Scott Keyes also emphasized that the change does little to meaningfully improve or expedite the boarding process. All Delta is doing is reverting to the traditional way of boarding passengers and scrapping its branded boarding process that began in 2018, he noted.

"The fact that they've reverted to numbered zones, like those employed by virtually all other airlines, speaks volumes," Keyes said. "Traditionally, Delta has been seen as the innovative airline and others have followed suit. In this case, Delta's innovation didn't pan out, and they've been forced to once again mimic American and United's boarding processes."

To be sure, any move that would actually speed up passenger boarding could give an airline a leg up on competitors.

"Speeding up the boarding process by even 10 minutes can prevent delays, and if sustained, allow airlines to add an additional daily flight to the schedule," Keyes said.

The airline posted a $37 million first-quarter profit on Wednesday and said demand for air travel is strong heading into the busy summer travel season. Travelers are flocking to book trips despite a string of recent air safety incidents, including a panel blowing off a Boeing 737 Max aircraft during an Alaska Airlines flight.

Delta Game Emulator Now Available From App Store on iPhone

Game emulator apps have come and gone since Apple announced App Store support for them on April 5, but now popular game emulator Delta from developer Riley Testut is available for download.

Delta Feature

Delta is an all-in-one emulator that supports game systems including NES, SNES, N64, Nintendo DS, Game Boy, and Game Boy Advance. It works with popular game controllers, and supports cheats, save states, backups, syncing, and more. As this is Testut's longtime project, it is more polished and feature rich than other emulators that have popped up.

Other features include custom controller skins, an option to fast forward, a "hold" button for games where a button needs to be consistently held, support for Haptic Touch , and appropriate box art for imported games. Local multiplayer gaming is available, and up to four players can participate.

Earlier this week, Apple approved iGBA, a direct copy of Testut's original GBA4iOS app. iGBA made it to the top of the ‌App Store‌ charges, but Apple pulled it after learning that it was a knockoff.

Delta can be downloaded from the ‌App Store‌ for free, and it does not collect information or include ads. The app is available in the United States and other countries, but it is not available in the European Union where it is instead being offered through an alternative app marketplace. [ Direct Link ]

Are delta-8, delta-10 and other hemp products safe and legal in Wisconsin? What to know

visit delta.com

This story is published as part of the series Highly Legal , in partnership with The Examination , a nonprofit newsroom that investigates global health threats, and AL.com , PennLive and USA TODAY . Our team is continuing to report on new cannabis products and we want to hear from you. Share your experience or questions with us here .

Is delta-8 real weed?

Delta-8 is extracted from hemp, a cannabis plant that contains low levels of delta-9 THC, the psychoactive compound associated with marijuana. In recent years, manufacturers have found ways to chemically extract it , and similar compounds, adding them to gummies, vapes and more.

Is delta-8 legal? And how?

Through the 2018 farm bill, Congress legalized hemp, a variety of cannabis plant with low levels of THC. Chemical processing yields a concentrated, and potent THC extract. Products made with that extract are also supposed to contain the same low levels of THC, but that isn’t always the case. Though marketed as “farm bill compliant,” the products remain in a legal gray area . Regulators and state law enforcement officials have called on Congress to clarify the law.

Can delta-8 make you high?

It depends on the dosage, and sometimes the person. The compound acts much like traditional marijuana: Low-dosage products may deliver a mild buzz, or none at all. High-dosage products, or low-dosage products taken in greater quantities, can deliver a powerful high.

More: Marijuana is illegal in Wisconsin. Its chemical cousins delta-8 is already here — and making some people sick.

How safe is delta-8?

Put simply: we don’t know. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not test hemp products, and the agency says it has ”limited tools for managing many of the risks” associated with these products. Due to inconsistent production, and packaging often containing little or misleading information, it can be easy to unwittingly take too much. Regulators and health experts have also flashed warnings about the ways some delta-8 products are processed.

How old do I need to be to buy delta-8?

There is no federal minimum age for buying or using delta-8, though some states tightly regulate sales or ban them altogether. States like Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Wyoming, and Minnesota restrict the sale to people 21 and older. Some other states, including Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, have no age limit.

What are the possible benefits and harms of delta-8?

An online survey of delta-8 consumers found that most reported feelings of relaxation, euphoria and pain relief. They also said delta-8 was less likely to cause paranoia than marijuana. But the experience can depend on the person, the dosage — or both. As sales have soared to almost $3 billion annually , so have reports of bad reactions, ranging from an unpleasant evening to hospital visits and even cannabinoid-induced psychosis. Poison control centers have also received thousands of calls concerning consumption by teens and children.

Will delta-8 test positive on a drug test?

Delta-8 is very similar chemically to the delta-9 in marijuana. Even though it has a weaker bond to brain receptors, the body still processes it in the same way as marijuana. That means byproducts of delta-8 often show up as marijuana on urine drug screens.

Can I take delta-8 while pregnant or breastfeeding?

The FDA says people should avoid CBD (cannabidiol), marijuana and other cannabis products while pregnant or breastfeeding. Heavy use is associated with low birthweight.

What should I do if my child consumes delta-8 THC?

Call 911 if a child has consumed a delta-8 product and is unable to respond, having difficulty breathing, or having a seizure, America’s Poison Centers says. If a child has consumed a delta-8 product and is not having the life-threatening symptoms described above, a caretaker should call Poison Help (1-800-222-1222). Often, children experiencing symptoms related to consumption of a delta-8 product will need monitoring or treatment at a healthcare facility.

Can I die from delta-8?

A handful of deaths have been potentially linked to delta-8. According to a study published last January , the FDA collected reports of 22 deaths between 2018 and 2021 where delta-8 was present. It was the only substance found in four of the people who died.

You mentioned delta-9 … I’m seeing these products, too. How?

It’s confusing. Delta-9, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana, is also present in low levels in hemp, and can also be extracted and synthesized. By applying the logic of the farm bill, retailers are now flooding physical stores and online sites with delta-9 THC products they say are farm bill compliant. But research has shown that some of these products can contain even more THC than would be allowed in legal marijuana states.

What are delta-10, HHC, THC-JD?

Since delta-8 became legal, a number of new compounds are available for sale. These include delta-10, delta-0, HHC, THC-JD and more. Some are more psychoactive than delta-8, health agencies have said.

Are regulators taking any action?

The FDA has issued warning letters to some producers , but has said its authority to oversee the hemp market is limited and a new regulatory regime is needed. The Drug Enforcement Administration is reviewing if the hemp products should be classified as a prohibited controlled substance. Several states have moved to limit the age or ban the sale of delta-8.

What is delta-8? Sales are booming. Here’s what to know

Highly Legal

Delta-8, delta-9 and THC-A products have flooded into U.S. states that don’t allow the legal sale of marijuana. The recreational use of marijuana is not legal in Alabama, however, you can find storefront signs, like this one pictured in Birmingham, Alabama, advertising the sale of those products which are legal. Exceptional Emulator with a Slick Interface – Delta!

//1. I've been using the Delta emulator on my device, and I must say, it's an absolute joy. The interface is clean and uncluttered, which makes navigating through settings and games an effortless experience. //2. There are no annoying ads to disrupt the gaming session, and the smooth operation enhances every aspect of gameplay. The convenience of the emulator is top-notch, thanks to its intuitive controls and compatibility with a wide range of game formats. It brings back all those nostalgic moments flawlessly, running classics without a hitch. //3. However, there's one feature that would make Delta even better — expanded cloud sync options. Currently, it supports Google Drive and Dropbox, which works well but integrating iCloud sync would be a game-changer for iOS users. This addition would streamline game data management across all Apple devices, making it much more accessible and secure. //4. In conclusion, Delta is a superb emulator that offers a premium nostalgic gaming experience. If iCloud support were added, it would undoubtedly be the perfect package. Highly recommended for anyone looking to relive their favorite gaming memories on the go!

The first and best emulator on the App Store

This ain’t my first rodeo with iOS emulators. Before Apple allowed them onto the App Store, I used an app called AltStore that you’d use your Mac to install outside apps onto your phone. One of these apps was Delta - an all-in-one Nintendo-centric emulation app. This app is the first (never mind that one bootleg everyone talked about…) and possibly the best emulator app you will see on the App Store. Seven supported game systems, meaning seven huge game libraries you now have the ability to jump into on your phone. The interface is easy to understand, and doesn’t waste your time. Absolutely no advertisements on this app - even when it’s on the App Store! Organization and customizability is what I like about Delta. You have the ability to set game covers, change controller layouts, skins, and even sync your game saves and files to your Google Drive for multiple devices! That is SOOO good. There’s some things i wish to improve. First, the “auto-orientation disabled” feature for WarioWare: Twisted doesn’t really work. At all. I still have to turn on Rotation Lock in Control Center. Second: iPad support. I know this app was definitely not designed around it but… hey, it could be pretty nice! Overall, it’s a good emulator. Good performance, and gets the job more than done. I’ve been here since GBA4iOS, and I’m really happy to see how far we’ve come. This is great stuff, Riley.
When I say I have been waiting for a good emulator to hit the apple App Store that couldn’t be more of an understatement. I have waited YEARS for something like this to come out and after trying it out for the past hour I can confidently say that this app does everything I need and want and MORE. Seamless interface and customization for games and controller skins and it runs flawlessly and is VERY SIMPLE TO USE. If you are having any difficulties getting it to run the way you want it to, a little digging around the internet and Reddit forums will set you straight in no time. So happy and excited to finally have this seamlessly integrated into my iPhone and I couldn’t be happier about the user experience
