Madhya Pradesh: The Perfect 6-day Itinerary

Madhya Pradesh is one of the most incredible states in India. The entire landscape of this central Indian state is teeming with historical ruins, some of which even date to pre-historic times. Here lies Bhimbetka Caves with paintings of pre-historic humans, the Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi, the architectural marvels of Mandu, the temples of Khajuraho, and so much more. It is also a treasure trove for nature and wildlife enthusiasts thanks to its National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries at Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Pench, Panna, and so on. Moreover, it has a number of religious hotspots such as Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Mahakaleshwar, and Amarkantak. All in all, if you are a traveller, Madhya Pradesh should certainly feature on your bucket list.

Chandela emblem

However, being the second largest state of India, it is quite impossible to cover the entire Madhya Pradesh in one go. Generally, Madhya Pradesh has four broad sections – the western part consisting of Indore, Mandu, Ujjain, Omkareshwar, and Bhopal; the eastern part comprising Khajuraho, Panna, Orchha, and Chitrakoot; the northern part encompassing Gwalior, Shivpuri, and Chanderi; the southern part covering Jabalpur, Amarkantak, Bandhavgarh, Pench, and Kanha.

Chhatri of Rani Kamlapati

For this trip, we concentrated on the eastern and northern parts of Madhya Pradesh. We basically wanted to explore the archaeological sites and historical ruins found in these areas. It took us 6 full days to cover these parts. Here goes our 6-days itinerary for exploring Madhya Pradesh.

Day 1: Reaching Khajuraho and exploring the temples

A pleasant autumn morning welcomed us as we alighted from the train in Khajuraho . The Gita Jayanti Express, which we boarded from New Delhi the previous evening, reached Khajuraho 30 minutes before its scheduled time. Outside the station, it was bustling with passengers, who haggled with a handful of auto-rickshaws and shared trekkers.

We took an auto to cover the 6 km ride to the temple town of Khajuraho. As we drove through the bumpy road, Khajuraho reminded us of Hampi. Like Hampi, we could inhale the whiff of history even before we entered the main town of Khajuraho.

We checked in at Hotel Harmony, which is just a stone’s throw away from the Western Group of Temples. Earlier, we had decided to take a rest and a quick nap before exploring Khajuraho as we were dead tired after a helluva journey (that consisted of two overnight train journeys and air travel). However, once we had set our feet in Khajuraho, all our exhaustion vanished into thin air. We swiftly showered, got dressed, devoured dosas and pooris, and set out on our adventure.

A bit of Khajuraho’s history will be handy here. Khajuraho was the religious capital of the mighty Chandelas, who went on an extraordinary spree of constructing temples, seen never before or afterwards in the entire Indian subcontinent. The Chandelas built as many as 85 temples in Khajuraho, an unmatched feat that has immortalized the name of the Chandelas in the annals of Indian history. The temples in Khajuraho testify to the exceptional engineering skill of the Chandela architects. All in all, the Khajuraho temples manifest the zenith of India’s Nagara style of architecture. However, Khajuraho went into oblivion from the 11th century and its history was revived by the eminent archaeologist Alexander Cunningham in the 19th century.

Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, Madhya Pradesh

The massive temples are living specimens of the excellent skill of Chandela architects and sculptors and prove their mastery. The mere mention of Khajuraho evokes images of erotic sculptures of couples engaged in copulation. In fact, Khajuraho has become synonymous with erotic temple sculptures, which depict various forms of ‘mithuna’. Funnily enough, only 10% of Khajuraho’s temple carvings are erotic in nature. The enormous volume of carvings on the walls of Khajuraho temples belongs to Hindu deities, Dikpalas, demi-gods like Ganas and Gandharvas, Celestial Women such as Apsaras and Surasunadaris, amorous couples, animals, secular scenes like war and hunting, and geometric and floral designs.

Erotic sculptures of Khajuraho

The temples in Khajuraho are spread across a vast area. Hence, they are categorized into three sections: Western Group, Eastern Group, and Southern Group.

We started exploring Khajuraho with the Western Group of Temples. The temples in this area are the most well-preserved and perhaps the most beautiful ones in Khajuraho.

Lakshmana Temple

One by one, we visited the Lakshmana Temple (dedicated to Vaikuntha Vishnu), Devi Shrine (a statue of Brahmani sits inside), Varaha Mandapa, Kandariya Mahadeva Temple (devoted to Lord Shiva), Mahadeva Shrine, Devi Jagadambi Temple (houses an idol of Devi Parvati), Chitragupta Temple (consecrated to Surya, the Sun God), Vishwanatha Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva), and Chausath Yogini Temple.

Devi Jagadambi Temple

Exploring the Western Group of Temples took the entire morning. It was time for lunch when we finished. Following lunch, we visited the new ASI museum near Hotel Lalit. The museum is vast and has well-stacked galleries.

Next, we went to the two temples of Southern Group. These temples are situated a bit away from the main town. Both the Duladeva Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) and Chaturbhuja Temple (accommodating an admirable Vishnu statue in ‘tribhanga’ position) were extraordinarily beautiful.

Duladeva Temple

Day 2: Visiting Eastern Group of Temples and Raneh Waterfalls:

We started our second day with a lip-smacking breakfast at Raja Café. Later, we visited the Eastern Group of Temples. This cluster of temples is located around the Khajura Sagar, also known as the Ninora Tal. The main temples of this group are Vamana Temple (dedicated to Vishnu’s 5 th incarnation), Javari Temple (devoted to a four-armed Vishnu), Brahma Temple (houses a Shiva linga with four faces), and Ghantai Temple (ruins of a Jain temple).

Vamana Temple

Afterwards, we explored the Jain temples of Khajuraho such as the Parshvanatha Temple, Adinatha Temple, and Shantinatha Temple. With this, we finished our temple trail in Khajuraho.

Parshwanatha Temple

Post-lunch, we decided to visit the Raneh Waterfalls. It lies some 20 km away from Khajuraho and can be reached within 30 minutes.

Raneh is a natural waterfall on the Ken River. The river’s erosional activity has led to the formation of 98 feet deep canyon made up of granite in varying shades of colours ranging from pink and red to black and grey.

Raneh Waterfalls

We finished exploring Khajuraho with the Light and Sound Program held at the Western Group.

Day 3: A quick stop at Dhubela on the way to Orchha:

On our third day, we bade Khajuraho adieu and headed towards Orchha. En route, we halted at Dhubela . At present, Dhubela is an otherwise run-of-the-mill village, characterized by lush greenery. But, in the past, it served as the centre of Maharaja Chhatrasal’s Bundelkhand kingdom. Dhubela has also become synonymous with Chhatrasal’s legendary daughter, Mastani. Mastani, who was later married to Peshwa Baji Rao I, spent a good part of her life in Dhubela and so, Dhubela is often referred to as the land of Mastani.

Dhubela Museum

Dhubela still bears the testimony of a once-prosperous kingdom. The village is dotted with various architectural specimens built by Chhatrasal, who is famously called the ‘Lion of Bundelkhand’. We visited the following places in Dhubela:

1. Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum – it once served as the palace of Chhatrasal and is now converted into a fascinating museum showcasing Gupta and post-Gupta era artefacts excavated from various parts of Bundelkhand.

2. Mastani Mahal -a palace built by Chhatrasal for his beloved daughter Mastani.

Mastani Mahal

3. Hriday Shah Palace – a dilapidated palace built by Chhatrasal’s eldest son, Hriday Shah.

4. Chhatri of Maharani Kamlapati – the cenotaph of Chhatrasal’s first wife Kamlapati which stands on the bank of the Dhubela Lake and is decorated with around 140 Bundeli-style of paintings.

5. Chhatri of Maharaja Chhatrasal – the cenotaph of the valiant ruler built by Peshwa Baji Rao I.

6. Chhatri of Chhatrasal’s Horse – the cenotaph of Chhatrasal’s faithful horse, Bhale Bhai.

7. Sheetal Garhi – a 17 th -century fortress built by Keerat Singh, the grandson of Chhatrasal.

8. Mahoba Gate – a spectacular gate built by Chhatrasal.

After our brief yet memorable sojourn in Dhubela, we drove straight ahead and reached Orchha in the afternoon.

We quickly checked in the hotel and head out to catch the sunset at Betwa River with the Chhatris on the backdrop. Alas! No sooner had we reached the riverside than the rain started. Our plan of enjoying the sunset sadly went down the drain.

Day 4: Exploring the erstwhile Bundeli capital of Orchha:

The next morning, thankfully the weather turned sunny and perfect for exploring the historic town of Orchha . Before embarking on the journey, let’s learn one or two bits about Orchha’s history. Orchha was made the capital of the Bundeli kingdom by Raja Rudra Pratap Singh in 1531 CE. It remained the capital of the entire Bundelkhand from 1531 to 1783 CE.  Rugged hills, dense forest and the Betwa or Vetravati River surrounded Orchha thus securing it and hiding it from the onslaught of the Mughal forces. In fact, the word ‘Orchha’ aptly means hidden. The town remained hidden from the Mughals and continues to remain elusive to tourists and explorers even today.

Outline of Orchha

We kicked off our adventure in Orchha with its eponymous fort. The imposing Orchha Fort is an amalgamation of massive and magnificently built palaces. It took us over 4 hours to explore the entire Orchha Fort complex.  Also, we opted for the audio tour guide of Madhya Pradesh tourism. It was cheap (INR 25 per pre-recorded audio guide along with headphones), incredibly informative and convenient, and also gave us the freedom to explore the sites as per our choice.

Gradually, we took a tour of various sections of the Fort:

1. Diwani-e-Aam – a court where the King used to hold assemblies with his council of ministers.

2. Raja Mahal – it was built by Raja Madhukar Shah and characterized by a fusion of Mughal and Rajput styles of architecture as well as lavish Bundeli style of paintings.

Parts of Orchha Fort

3. Jahangir Mahal – it was constructed by Raja Bir Singh Deo Bundela for Mughal Emperor Jahangir and set apart by 8 domes and 236 chambers, intricately carved doors with elaborate arches and interiors decorated with trellis work, lapis lazuli inlays, and glazed blue tiles.

Majestic Fort

4. Sheesh Mahal – it was built as a pleasure retreat and is now converted into a heritage hotel by Madhya Pradesh Tourism.

Sheesh mahal

5. Rai Parveen Mahal – it was the home of the beautiful courtesan, Rai Parveen.

After travelling the nooks and crannies of the Orchha Fort for 4 hours, we took a quick rest and a brief lunch at the restaurant of the Sheesh Mahal. Recharging ourselves, we set out to explore the rest of Orchha.

Our next destination was the iconic Chhatris of Orchha. The Chhatris are cenotaphs of Bundela rulers of Orchha, earmarking the ground where the Kings were cremated.

There are 14 Chhatris, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Apart from Bir Singh Deo’s Chhatri which resembles a palace, the cenotaphs follow the Nagara style of temple architecture. They are modelled on ‘panchayatana’ style with ‘garbhagriha’ inside and ‘shikharas’ at the top.

Chhatris of Orchha

Next, we climbed a small hillock to reach the breathtaking Laxmi Narayan Temple. It was built by Raja Bir Singh Deo Bundela. The temple is a unique structure as it resulted from the mingling of architectural styles of both temple and fort.

Lakshmi Narayan Temple

The most intriguing feature of this temple is the presence of vivid murals on its interior walls and ceilings. The lively, colourful paintings are the finest specimens of Bundeli style of painting, which resulted from a marriage of Rajput and Mughal styles.

Wall paintings

Afterwards, we reached the sky-kissing Chaturbhuj Temple. It was here that the idol of Ram Chandra was originally supposed to be placed. The 105-metre-high temple now houses a statue of Shree Krishna and Shree Radhika, worshipped daily at regular intervals.

The exterior of this massive temple is ornately decorated with floral motifs and religious emblems. In stark contrast, the interior is plain and austere.

Our last stop at Orchha was the Ram Raja Temple. It is the only temple in India where Ram Chandra is worshipped as King. The evening arati at Ram Raja Temple is a spectacle to behold.

Ram Raja Temple

After finishing the tour of Orchha, we drove to Jhansi. From Jhansi, we boarded the train and reached Gwalior in the evening.

Day 5: Waking up in a cloudy Gwalior and exploring Morena:

We woke up to peacocks’ call on our fifth morning. We were staying at Neemrana’s Deobagh in Gwalior, and the peacocks’ divine call served as our alarm clocks. Instead of rushing out to explore Gwalior, we took it slow and enjoyed a relaxing morning on the well-curated lawn of Deobagh with the peacocks and squirrels as our companions.

After a comforting breakfast, we decided to explore the archaeological ruins of the three sites in Morena – Bateshwar, Garhi Padavali, and Mitaoli. With a cloudy sky and a light drizzle, we set out for Morena.

Our first stop for the day was the intriguing Bateshwar Group of Temples . The temple complex, situated amidst the once infamous Chambal ravines, was previously a jumble of countless ruined structures. Gradually, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) went to unprecedented lengths and restored many of the shrines here. At present, Bateshwar has around 200 temples. In fact, ASI is still engaged in restoration works in Bateshwar.

Bateshwar Group of Temples

The name Bateshwar is probably derived from Bhooteshwar, another name of Lord Shiva. According to experts, the Bateshwar Group of Temples belongs to the Gurjara – Pratihara era. The shrines of Bateshwar were built between 750 – 800 CE. Eventually, the temples were reduced to mere rubbles. It is however unclear as to how these shrines were destroyed. No sign of invasion or attack was found here. Presently, the common consensus is that an earthquake in the 13th century led to the decay of Bateshwar. Gradually, the debris was engulfed by the forest and Bateshwar remained hidden from the prying eyes.

Omgoing restoration work

As we walked, the riveting archaeological site began to unfold before us. Present-day Bateshwar can best be described as rows of small temples arranged in neat order amidst the scattered ruins. The entire site is filled with broken pillars, wrecked friezes, and fragmented sculptures. A Hanuman statue, smeared with orange vermillion, stands at the centre and is still worshipped by the locals. Needless to say, we were overwhelmed by the plenitude of artefacts in Bateshwar.

Hanuman statue at Bateshwar

After Bateshwar, we visited the Garhi Padavali where stands an insanely carved ‘mukha mandapa’ of a temple, the main portion of which is now lost in oblivion. It is undoubtedly one of the most intricately carved temples in India. There is hardly an inch left without elaborate sculptures. Every pillar and ceiling is decorated with ornate carvings.

Garhi Padavali

We were stunned by the exquisite wall panels showcasing the Trimurti, the birth of Shri Krishna, Goddess Chamunda, the Sun God Surya, and the slaying of Abhimanyu in the battle of Kurukshetra.

Ceiling panel

Our last stop in Morena was the Chausath Yogini Temple of Mitaoli . At present, it goes by the name of Ekattarso Mahadeva Temple. The temple is circular and roofless, as tantric rituals involved worshipping the environment along with its five principal elements, also due to the belief that the yoginis could fly. Due to its hypaethral structure, it is also believed that this temple was built for the study of astrology, astronomy, and mathematics by observing the transition of the sun.

The amazing sculpture of the temple

The temple is circular, with a radius of around 52 m. The outer round-shaped wall has 64 small chambers with an open ‘mandapa’ supported by pilasters and pillars. These chambers once accommodated the representation of the ‘yoginis’. At present, they contain small Shiva lingas. At the centre, there stands another circular temple, which houses the Ekattarso Mahadeva linga.

Inside the temple of Mitaoli

As we strolled around the temple and peeked inside the minuscule chambers, we sensed the strong presence of a spiritual aura. This may be due to the fact that this Chausath Yogini temple was one of the foremost places in ancient India for practising Tantric rituals.

Mitaoli Temple

After exploring Morena, we decided to go on a food trail in the streets of Gwalior. We relished the renowned Boondi Laddoo of Bahadura Sweets, Gajaak from the well-known Daulat Ram Gajaak Bhandar, Paneer Jalebi and Kachori at Jodhpur Mishtaan Bhandar, and Gilori Petha at the iconic Panchiraaj.

Day 6: A date with the eponymous Fort of Gwalior:

On our last day in Madhya Pradesh, we visited the resplendent Gwalior Fort . The Fort, set atop a solitary rocky outcrop of the Vindhyas and spread across a staggering 3 square kilometres and rising 36 feet, is a wonder in itself.

The Gwalior Fort

The fort is comprised of various monuments that date back as early as the 7th century CE. It took us almost 5 hours to complete exploring this enormous Fort.

1. Sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras – the rock-cut sculptures found in the Gopachal and Siddhanchal Hills.

Jaina statues at Gwalior Fort

2 . Man Singh Palace – the grandest and most stunning section of the Gwalior Fort characterized by six colossal cylindrical towers capped with cupolas, corbelled brackets, elaborate lattice-work, chhattris, and vibrant mosaic tiles.

Inside the Man Singh Palace

3. ASI Museum – it is situated inside a building which dates back to the British era.

4. Kirti Mandi – the handiwork of Raja Kirti Singh Tomar with faint traces of painting and coloured tiles.

5. Vikramaditya Palace – it was built in 1516 CE and named after Raja Vikramaditya, son of Raja Man Singh.

6. Jahangir Mahal & Shahjahan Mahal – it was used as a resting place for Mughal troops rather than for royalty.

7. Teli Ka Mandir, one of the loftiest buildings within the premises of the Gwalior Fort and set apart by its hybrid architecture of Dravida and Nagara styles.

Teli Ka Mandir

8. Saas-Bahu Temple – these twin temples were built by the Kacchapaghata ruler, Mahipala, in 1093 CE and originally called Sahasra Bahu Temple as it was dedicated to a thousand-armed form of Lord Vishnu.

22 10 07 MP22 1401

9. Chaturbhuj Temple – it houses an inscription that contains one of the earliest known uses of mathematical zero.

10. Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhor – it was constructed to commemorate Guru Hargobind Singh’s incarceration inside the Gwalior Fort by Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

11. Gurjari Mahal – a charming palace built by Raja Man Singh for his Gujjar queen, Mariganayani.

Post-lunch, we went to the Jai Vilas Palace. This opulent palace is the residence of the Scindias, the erstwhile rulers of Gwalior. Originally, this lavish palace was constructed to welcome the then Prince of Wales. It was designed by Lt. Col. Sir Michael Filose and displays a fusion of both Tuscan and Corinthian architectural styles. Although it is still used by the Scindias as their residence, a part of it with 35 rooms has been converted into Jiyaji Rao Scindia Museum.

Jai Vilas Palace

During sunset, we paid a visit to the tomb of Muhammad Ghaus, who was a 16th-century Sufi saint and also a prolific music master. Mian Tansen was one of his foremost disciples.

Mohammad Ghaus’s tomb was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Akbar and depicts a synthesis of the Lodhi style of architecture and structural ornamentation peculiar to Gujarat. The mausoleum is a marvellous specimen of delicate craftsmanship. Built with sandstone, it is decorated with lattice or ‘jali’ works on all sides.

Tomb of Hauj Khas

In the same compound lies the final resting place of Sangeet Samrat Tansen. Compared to his master’s resting place, Tansen’s tomb is modest.

With Tansen’s Tomb, our Gwalior tour came to an end.

Madhya Pradesh in a week – Itinerary and Travel Tips

by Ava and Sush · Published November 20, 2021 · Updated November 22, 2021

Madhya Pradesh (MP) offers a perfect admixture of Architecture, Nature and Wildlife. Think of regal forts, ancient temples, gushing waterfalls or lush forests – the state has it all. Fondly called the heart of India, it is still less explored and provides fresh views at every corner. And this is exactly why we enjoyed our trip to MP so much.

It took us a fair bit of research to come up with an itinerary for MP. Because it is the 2nd largest state in India and every part of it lures with a different kind of beauty. So here it is, an itinerary for your next trip to Madhya Pradesh including Gwalior, Jabalpur and Bandhavgarh National park.

Itinerary for Madhya Pradesh

  • Day 1 : Reach Gwalior. Explore Gwalior Fort
  • Day 2 : Visit Jai Vilas Palace Museum and Mohammed Ghaus (and Tansen) Tomb in the morning. In the 2nd half, check out the Sun Temple or visit the local markets for shopping. Catch train to Jabalpur in the evening.
  • Day 3 : Reach Jabalpur in the morning. Visit Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls. In the evening enjoy Narmada Aarti at Gwarighat.
  • Day 4 : Drive to Bandhavgarh. You can opt for an evening Safari this day or relax at the resort.
  • Day 5 : Morning Safari. Explore nearby area.
  • Day 6 : Drive back to Jabalpur and catch flight back home.

Details and alternate itineraries in the following sections.

Best time to visit Madhya Pradesh

October – November : This is the ideal time to visit keeping the weather condition in view. Rains would have receded by this time covering everything in a blanket of green. The core area in Bandhavgarh re-opens from 1st October for safaris providing better chances of tiger sighting. Boat ride in Bhedaghat opens from 15th Oct and Dhuandhar Waterfall will be in full force. The days are also clear for sightseeing.

December – March : Winters season is also a great time for visiting MP. The days are cool providing perfect opportunity for sightseeing and picnics.

For October to March time, make your bookings well in advance, especially for Forest stay and safaris since this is the peak season.

Avoid Summer months as the days get too hot and humid. Monsoon too is not ideal if you are planning for forest visit.

Detailed Itinerary and other tips

Reach Gwalior. Explore Gwalior Fort

This is the day you reach Gwalior. If  you reach early, then check into the hotel, freshen up and get ready to explore Gwalior Fort. As we had an afternoon flight from Bangalore, we reached late and spent the evening in the resort. If that is the case with you, you need to add another day to the itinerary. Rest on the day of arrival at your hotel and visit Gwalior Fort the next morning.

Now coming to the Fort, it is sprawled on top of a hill and needs at least half a day to cover. Majority of Gwalior attractions you may find over the internet are actually part of the fort itself. Since it could get tiring exploring this huge fort, we recommend not keeping any other attractions in the list for this day.

Here is a list of all the key points you can visit inside Gwalior Fort.

Maan Singh Mahal

The most  striking part of the fort is this almond coloured palace with dashing blue paintings all over. The interiors are as pretty with exquisite courtyards and corridors made of ornate walls and pillars. Enjoy the light and sound show that happens every evening at the amphitheatre near this Mahal and get to know the glorious history of Gwalior.

Other Mahals in the premises (Karan Mahal, Vikram Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, Shahjahan mahal etc.)

Close to the Maan Singh Mahal, there are many other mahals built inside Gwalior Fort. These mahals have a very different charm with their rustic look and are named after the rulers who built them. You can cover all of  these mahals in an hour or so.

Saas Bahu Temple

The name of the temple was interesting enough to pique our interest. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple was originally named Sahastrabahu, signifying Lord Vishnu in his 1000 arms form. But with time, the name was finally altered as Saas Bahu, meaning mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. The temple has a grand architecture and is full of intricate carvings that take you back in time. There is also a smaller temple in the compound that is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is equally beautiful.

Teli Ka Mandir

A towering 9th century temple with impressive carvings, Teli Ka Mandir has a very unique architectural design. There is nothing to see inside and also the interior has a very strong smell of bats. But the exterior of this 100 feet tall temple is definitely a visual delight.

Gurudwara data Bandi Chhor

A striking white Gurudwara made in the memory of the Sikh Guru who freed 52 Rajput kings from the custody of Mughla King Jahangir with his wit. Suitable for a quick visit if peaceful holy places interest you.

Rock cut Jain Sculptures at Gopachal Parvat

As you move up the hill towards the the fort, you will come across these skilfully chiselled Jain statues on both sides of the road. These rock-cut sculptures are believed to be carved during 7th century and though broken in parts are still a great sight.

Know before you go

  • As I mentioned earlier, the Fort is atop a hill. If you are going by a 4 wheeler, then you can directly go till the fort gate. But if you are taking an auto (tuk-tuk), then it will drop you at the entry point at the base of the hill. You can either walk or take a van to reach the fort.
  • From the auto drop point, it is around 1 kilometre to reach the gate of the Fort that houses all the Mahals including the Maan Singh Mahal. Then Saas Bahu Temple, Gurudwara and Teli ka Mandir are farther away from this gate and also away from each other. Unless you have a vehicle at your disposal, we recommend hiring a van from the auto drop point that would take you to all these locations one after the other. They give enough time to visit the points and charge a very reasonable amount of INR 550.
  • Entry tickets are applicable for the palaces as well as Saas Bahu Temple and Teli Ka Mandir. The ticket taken for Maan Singh Palace also includes entry to these 2 temples. So keep it handy even after the palace visit.
  • You need to take a different entry ticket for the other palaces (all included) inside the fort apart from Maan Singh Mahal.
  • Avoid the queue at the ticket counter and purchase the entry tickets for the fort online from  https://asi.payumoney.com/quick/gwf
  • Timing for light and sound show:
  • Summer (March – Oct) – Hindi: 7:30-8:15 PM, English: 8:30 to 9:15 PM
  • Winter (Nov-Feb) – Hindi: 6:30-7:15 PM, English: 7:30 to 8:15 PM
  • For more information on Gwalior, check out  mptourism.com/destination-gwalior.php

Visit Jai Vilas Palace Museum and Mohammed Ghaus (and Tansen) Tomb in the morning. In the 2nd half, check out the Sun Temple or visit the local markets for shopping. Catch train to Jabalpur in the evening.

Utilize this day to explore Jai Vilas Palace Museum and the tombs of Mohammed Ghaus and Tansen. The palace museum requires 2 hours (or more depending on your interest) and tomb takes maximum half an hour. You will be able to cover both these in the 1st half of the day itself. We decided to keep the evening at leisure as we wanted a relaxing trip. But if  you like covering more places, then use the 2nd half of the day to visit the Sun Temple and/or shop at the local bazaars.

Mohammed Ghaus (and Tansen) Tomb

Start the day early and head to Mohammed Ghaus Tomb after breakfast. Made of Sandstones, the tomb is a fine example of Mughal architecture with beautifully crafted lattice work all over. The complex housing this tomb also has another small tomb beside it for Tansen, the famous musician of Akbar’s court. The monument perched amidst the luxurious lawns and surrounded by greenery feels like a serene paradise in the chaotic town of Gwalior. This is more of an offbeat attraction and not much to see here. But if you are a photography enthusiast or someone who loves solitude, then this is the place for you.

  • No entry fee for the tomb. Photography is allowed. But try not to disturb the sanctity of the place.
  • The tomb is approx. 2 Kms away from the main town and comes on the way to the fort. You can easily get auto-rickshaws to and from this place.

Jai Vilas Palace Museum

After visting the tomb, head towards Jai Vilas Palace and Museum. The museum is the only part you can visit in the palace, but the chalk white regal palace with stunning Italian architecture and perfectly manicured lawns is a delightful sight in itself. The museum has multiple rooms and a guided tour through each of these rooms can easily take more than an hour.

There are several rooms inside the museum with an expansive collection of artefacts that provide an isight into the luxurious lifestyle of the royal family.  Most notable of all is the Darbar Hall with gold coating on the walls and ceiling and two massive chandeliers of 3.5 tons each.

  • Timings : 10.00 AM to 5:00 PM : Wednesday Closed
  • Entry Fee: INR 300 for Indians
  • Camera is not allowed inside the museum. But you can take pictures in mobile.
  • Also, no bags are allowed inside the museum. There are free lockers at the entry gate where you can keep your bags if carrying any.

After the palace and the tomb, come back to your hotel.  Freshen up and after a little rest and lunch, head to the Sun Temple. It is dedicated to Sun God and is inspired from the famous sun temple at Konark, Odisha. Made of sandstones, the temple is located amidst well maintained garden and has beautiful carvings. The temple is 5-6 kilometres from the city and needs maximum of an hour to visit. You can easily find cabs or autos for the visit.

Now since you are done with the attractions, it is time for some shopping. And Gwalior has a number of markets or bazaars to cater to different shopping needs. So select any of these bazaars to visit and pick a few items for yourself and your loved ones back home🙂

  • Bada and Naya Bazaar : Best place to buy native weaves such as Chanderi and Maheswari silk sarees. Also a good place to buy handicrafts or pick some paper mache products.
  • Topi Bazaar : A small market area famous for good quality leather products such as shoes, bags and purses.
  • Patankar Bazaar : Famous for lacquer ware, wall hangings and handmade carpets. You can also shop Chanderi sarees from the shops around here.

When you are done shopping, do not forget to try some MP famous kachori and jalebi in the local shops.

This wraps up the time in Gwalior. Later in the evening, catch train to Jabalpur.

2 days are enough to cover all the attractions in Gwalior. But if you want a relaxing trip (as we did), you can cover the same things in the span of 3 days instead of 2. This will just add another day to the itinerary.  Alternatively, you can follow the original 2 day itinerary to cover everything in Gwalior and then add another day to take a day trip to Morena. This historical district is around 45 kilometres from Gwalior and is home to some of the ancient temples rich in architecture.

Reach Jabalpur. Visit Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls. In the evening enjoy Narmada Aarti at Gwarighat.

Day 3 is dedicated to exploring Jabalpur. Jabalpur is the connecting city if you want to visit Bandhavgarh or Kanha National Park. But it also has some unique experiences to offer like boating through the marble rocks in Bhedaghat or moving in a ropeway over the magnificent Dhuandhar Falls.

Bhedaghat and Dhuandhar Falls

So check into your hotel, freshen up and start for Dhuandhar Falls. The Fall is a bit away from the city and takes around 45 mins to reach by car. From the parking space, keep walking for 5 mins to reach near the falls. On the way back, take a ropeway ride to have amazing views of the river and the falls from up above.

After the falls, head to Bhedaghat Boating point which is approx. 2 kilometres away from the falls. Here you can take a boat ride in river Narmada passing through the beautiful marble rock canyons. Remember that “raat ka nasha abhi…” song from Bollywood movie Ashoka? It was shot in Bhedaghat. If you are going during full moon, do not miss the boat ride in the moonlight at the marble rocks. We have heard it feels magical. The boat ride lasts around 30-40 mins and is available both in sharing as well as reserve basis.

  • Exclusive Boat: INR 800
  • Sharing: INR 100 per person
  • Since both Dhuandhar Falls and Bhedaghat Boating Point are away from town and are close to each other, cover both the places at one go. It will save you time of commute as well as the cost. Both places are better visited during morning or late afternoon time when the sun is not too harsh. So plan accordingly.
  • We paid INR 1600 for a trip to and from Dhuandhar falls. But our hotel was a bit away from town and getting cabs were not very easy. So enquire the prices before booking the cab.
  • Avoid travelling to jabalpur between  June to October 15th  as Boating at Bhedaghat stays closed due to monsoon. Also, when the water level is high in monsoon, Dhuandhar falls is not visible and ropeway too gets closed sometimes.

Narmada Aarti at Gwarighat

In the evening, head to Gwarighat. Here you can enjoy boat ride in river Narmada in the vibrantly decorated boats. They take you to the other side to visit the Gurudwara and show you the different points. End the day watching Narmada Aarti that transforms the whole atmosphere with beautiful chants and huge multi-tiered lamps. This is a very unique experience not to be missed in Jabalpur and we totally recommend this when you are in the city. The aarti starts at 7pm and continues for half an hour.

It is not easy getting a cab from Gwarighat to the city. So either reserve a cab for your to and fro trip or take an auto rickshaw on the way back.

Drive to Bandhavgarh. Evening Safari.

It is time for the Jungle. After breakfast, start your drive to Bandhavgarh National park. The drive takes around 4 hours and is through the country side. Especially if you are going just after the monsoon, the whole stretch will be dotted with greenery, small streams and wild flowers.

Check into your resort.  Later in the day, you can either take an evening safari (starts at 3pm) or explore the area around your resort. Take long walks, enjoy the sunset or go spotting birds.

Morning Safari and Day at resort

Start your day with the Jungle Safari. The morning safari starts at 6am and can go upto 11am. If you book your safari (exclusive) through the hotel, the Gipsy will pick you up. From the entry gate of the forest, a guide will join you and then the adventure will begin. Passing through the narrow dirt roads of the lush forest and watching birds and animals in their natural habitat is unlike any other experience. If you are lucky, you may spot the elusive Tiger too. Apart from Tigers, Bandhavgarh is also home to many other animals  such as Sloth Bears, Sambar Deer, Nilgais, Chinkara and wild Boars. You can also spot many varieties of birds, butterflies and spiders too.

As the safari starts early, the resort packs the breakfast for guests. And having breakfast in the middle of the forest surrounded by towering trees feels exciting. Unfortunately, we did not see the Tiger that day. Yet we loved the drive through the forest crossing path with rivulets and listening to the sound of birds and insects while the cool morning breeze wafted against our skin. Also got to see a Sloth Bear from a very close distance completely engrossed in his breakfast🙂

  • Bandhavgarh has 2 areas – Core and Buffer area. Core area is where the sightings are good. But it stays closed from June 15 to September 30th. So plan your trip accordingly.
  • Book your accommodation in advance, especially between October to March. This is the time the park gets most of the tourists and even though there is no dearth of accommodation in Bandhavgarh, you may not get the preferred ones.
  • The luxury level accommodations usually include safari in their package. But if not, then you can either ask your accommodation to book the safaris for you or you can book it online from  MP Tourism website  (Use Book Now button on this page). Book in advance as only limited vehicles are allowed in each safari.
  • The booking page provides you option for exclusive (Full vehicle) or shared (Single seat) booking. Also, it allows to choose the zone. Make sure to select a core zone (Khitauli, Magadhi or Tala) while booking.
  • If you are taking only 1 safari, then we recommend taking an exclusive one instead of shared safari. This gives you more freedom and also the morning ride through the forest feels surreal. From what we have heard, tiger sighting is better in morning safari.
  • For exclusive safari in Buffer area, we paid  INR 5000 (Including Gipsy, forest guide and park fees) and this was in off season (September last week). This charge is a bit higher for safari in the core area. There is no differentiation in prices for Indian and Foreigners.
  • Carry a scarf and mask as the moving vehicles generate lot of dust.

You can spend the evening either exploring the nearby area or at leisure. Take small strolls around your resort and you may get to see a lot of birds and butterflies.  Some resorts even arrange cultural events in the evening.

Drive back to Jabalpur and catch flight back home

This is the day to return back home. We had a late afternoon flight from Jabalpur to Bangalore. So we started from Bandhavgarh at around 10:30am and had lunch in Jabalpur before boarding the flight. You need to plan accordingly keeping the 4hour drive time to Jabalpur and your flight timing in view.

From Jabalpur, you can book a cab for drop and pick up to/from Bandhavgarh. We booked it through our resort at Bandhavgarh and found the price reasonable. The charges were  INR 5000  each way.

Alternative Itineraries for Madhya Pradesh

Here are a few alternative itineraries for Madhya Pradesh for your reference. Choose any depending on your preference, mode of transport and available time.

  • Have 2 additional days? Then add Orchha to the original itinerary: Gwalior-Orchha-Jabalpur-Bandhavgarh (or Kanha National Park)
  • Not very keen on Jabalpur or Bandhavgarh? Then following itinerary works the best. It is also suitable for a road trip from Delhi: Gwalior-Orchha-Khajuraho-Panna National Park .

You can also check the suggested itineraries by the Govt of of Madhya Pradesh on MP Tourism site .

Reaching Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh has  5  airports  at  Gwalior, Bhopal, Indore, Khajuraho and Jabalpur. Some of the smaller airports like Gwalior and Jabalpur have limited flight connectivity with a handful of major cities.

There are also a number of  Railway stations  across the state. Major stations like Gwalior, Jabalpur, Indore etc. are well connected by trains to cities across India.

You can also opt for a  road trip  via car if you start from Delhi. Cities like Gwalior, Orchha etc are at driving distance and and are perfect entry point for the trip.

Getting around in Madhya Pradesh

In Gwalior and Jabalpur, for traveling within the city, auto rickshaws and app taxi like Ola are easily available.

For intercity travels , you can either use taxis, train or even flights depending on your budget and convenience. If you intend to travel by air, then keep in mind that these airports have hardly 1 flight operating per day from one city to another. So plan accordingly.

For intercity travel by Taxis, Ola Outstation and MakeMyTrip Cabs are two options. We did not use any local taxi services, so can not comment on that. Alternatively, you can always talk to your accommodation and they can help book a cab for you.

Accommodation in Madhya Pradesh

Gwalior has many options for stay including budget and mid range properties. For luxury, there are limited options in Gwalior, Taj Usha Kiran Palace being the top rated one. You can also check MPT Tansen Residency  which is a mid-range property managed by MP Tourism.

We stayed at Neemrana’s Deo Bagh which is a 17th century mid-range heritage property in the old part of the city. The hotel is tucked away amidst an oasis of greenery and feels like a different world once inside. The rooms are spacious, aesthetically decorated while keeping the old world charm intact. Here you can wake up to the sight of peafowls and enjoy your evenings sipping tea in the luxuriant lawn. The super delicious food at the restaurant is the cherry on the top. If you are more about experiences, then opt for a royal breakfast in Baradari which is a fascinating 17th century structure inside the resort. There are even a few ancient temples and cenotaphs in the resort compound accessible to guests.

So overall, this property is a peaceful haven for people looking for a leisurely getaway and we definitely recommend it. But it is a bit farther from the attractions and good restaurants. So if you are more about hopping attractions, we recommend choosing the accommodation in the main town area instead.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ava & Sush || Travel and Us (@theroamingshoes)

For Jabalpur accommodation, you have 2 options – Either stay in the main city or stay close to Bhedaghat. If you choose to stay in town, you will be close to restaurants, markets and will find commute easily. But be ready to spend more on to and fro trip to Dhuandhar Falls and Bhedaghat boating points as these are quite far (approx. 30 kms) from the town.

Alternatively, if your main intent of visiting Jabalpur is seeing Dhuandhar Falls and taking boat ride at Bhedaghat, then we recommend choosing an accommodation near Bhedaghat. There are limited options in the area with not many having great reviews. But you can always book in advance to reserve the preferred one. There is a hotel named MPT Marble Rocks near Bhedaghat that is managed by MP Government.

We chose to stay in Shawn Elizey which is a little outside the main city, but a bit closer to Bhedaghat. Made with European Architectural style, the hotel looks absolutely gorgeous and provides luxury in mid-range price. The rooms are spacious, tastefully done and lavish. The food is great and buffets are extensive with reasonable price.

Bandhavgarh National Park

If you are a luxury traveller, then Safari Lodges of Bandhavgarh are the perfect options. Samode Safari Lodge , Mahua Kothi by Taj , Treehouse Hideaway or Pugdandi safaris-Kings Lodge are a few names in the list. Apart from luxury resorts, there are many mid range properties in Bandhavgarh too though budget properties are hard to find.

We chose Aranyak Resort Bandhavgarh for our stay. The resort has lovely rustic cottages set amidst lush vegetation and exudes the feel of being amidst wilderness. You can spot many birds, butterflies and insects in the resort surrounding. The room equipped with a comfy four-poster bed, bamboo furnishings and an open shower feels absolutely inviting. Food is good and staff very helpful and friendly. So if you are looking for a mid-range property with abundant peace and warm hospitality, then this place is a perfect fit.

Packing for the trip to Madhya Pradesh

  • Pack a really good sunscreen. Even during September end, Sush got badly sunburnt(The guy does not like anything on his face, so can’t help🙂 )
  • Hat, Umbrella and Scarf (especially for the auto rides and the jungle safari)
  • Pack enough clothes if you are travelling anytime other than Winter. Clothes that you use once get really sweaty.
  • Choose comfortable clothing for the trip, especially cottons. Loose-fitting cotton dresses, shirts, kurtas and baggy pants help a lot in the hot and humid weather. Avoid shorts and revealing clothes since MP is quite reserved in that front.
  • If you travel in the winter months, especially to the forest, pack clothes in a way so that you can use in layers. The morning and evenings get really chilly in winter. So good sweaters, jackets and beanies are a must.

Other Pointers

  • Covid Related Restrictions: During our visit (September end), there was no RT-PCR report required to enter MP. But our accommodation had asked us if we were vaccinated. So talk to your resort/hotel before leaving if there is any such requirement.
  • Always ask and agree on the price before entering a cab (unless app based or prepaid) or auto-rickshaw. Otherwise you may end up paying more.

This is all about our trip to Madhya Pradesh. We have included every bit of information you may need to plan your trip. If you found this article helpful or have any queries on MP, do leave them in the comments below.

How to spend 10 days in Madhya Pradesh, India

The 10th-century Gwalior Fort is just one of Madhya Pradeshs many draws for visitors

A 10-day trip allows you to visit many of the highlights of the central-Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Here is a suggested itinerary.

Though most visitors to India will head straight to the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra, the country has so much more to offer. The often-overlooked central state of Madhya Pradesh has some amazing things to see, from a “hidden” town on the banks of the Betwa River, to Kanha National Park’s tigers .

Day 1: Bhopal and Sanchi

After checking into your hotel – Ivy Suites , a charming boutique B&B, and the top-end Noor-us-Sabah are both good options – take a train, bus or taxi to nearby Sanchi, a remarkable Buddhist temple that dates back to the third century BC.

Afterwards, travel back to Bhopal and explore the old city, home to the busy streets and colourful shops of the bazaar. Bhopal has several impressive mosques including the vast Darul Uloom Tajul Masajid. For dinner, sample some tasty kebabs at New Inn, an economical restaurant in the New Market area, or enjoy the views at Wind and Waves, which overlooks the Upper Lake.

Bhopal’s old city has several impressive mosques, notably the vast Darul Uloom Tajul Masajid

Days 2-3: Orchha

Take a morning train to Jhansi and then a bus, auto-rickshaw or taxi to Orchha , one of the most beguiling places in central India. On the banks of the Betwa River, this slow-paced town (whose name translates as “hidden place”) has an array of crumbling, forest-shrouded palaces, fortifications, temples, cenotaphs, tombs and gardens. The best place to stay is the Sheesh Mahal , a 19th-century palace that has been turned into a hotel by the state tourist authority.

Over the next day and a half, explore Orchha’s many historic monuments; the key sites are illuminated during the nightly sound and light show. There are several friendly traveller restaurants dotted around town, though the most elegant place to eat is the Sheesh Mahal, which often has live music and dance performances.

Days 4-5: Khajuraho

In the morning, take a bus or taxi to Khajuraho, where magnificent ancient temples are covered with frank – and often remarkably imaginative – erotic sculptures. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temples were constructed during the Chandella dynasty between the 10th and 12th centuries and have been wonderfully restored.

Khajuraho village has a wide range of guesthouses and hotels suitable for travellers of all budgets; Hotel Surya and Lalit Temple View are both solid options. Its popularity as a tourist destination means there are also plenty of good restaurants. Among the highlights are Mediterraneo, which offers authentic pizza and pasta, and Raja Café, whose menu features well-prepared dishes from across the globe.

Khajuraho is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Day 6: Jabalpur

Travelling from Khajuraho to Kanha National Park is a bit convoluted, but the chance to explore Madhya Pradesh’s premier tiger reserve means the hassle is more than worth it. Get up early, take a taxi to Satna, and then a train to the regional city of Jabalpur, where you can stay the night at the comfortable Kalchuri Residency or the smarter Narmada Jacksons . Dining options beyond the hotels are relatively limited, but the Indian Coffee House in the city centre is a decent option.

Days 7-8: Kanha National Park

Take an early bus or taxi from your accommodation to Kanha National Park, where idyllic woodlands, meadows and savannah are home to approximately 75 tigers, as well as numerous other species, such as wild dogs, barasingha deer, sloth bears and langur monkeys. Tourists can explore the park on morning and afternoon jeep safaris (known locally as “game drives”) where tiger sightings are common.

Meanwhile, the surrounding buffer zone is ideal for guided nature walks. Easily the best place to stay in the Kanha area is Shergarh , a gorgeous luxury camp surrounded by tranquil gardens. Budget travellers should try the Pugmark Resort .

Kanha National Park is home to approximately 75 tigers

Days 9-10: Indore and Mandu

After another morning game drive in the park, take a bus or taxi to the regional city of Jabalpur, where an overnight train departs for Madhya Pradesh’s industrial hub, Indore. After arriving in Indore, drop your luggage off at your accommodation – try mid-range Ginger or the fancier Lemon Tree – and take a taxi or bus to Mandu.

Set on a rocky plateau, this Medieval city’s ruined palaces, mosques and mausoleums make it an incredibly evocative place to explore. In the late afternoon, head back to Indore for dinner at Hotel Shreemaya .

Madhya Pradesh Itinerary – Heritage Sites of Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh Itinerary

The heritage of Madhya Pradesh is not only incredible in terms of its beauty but also in terms of the time period it spans. It is a virtual living museum that ranges from the pre-historic rock caves of Bhimbetka to the contemporary Madhya Pradesh Museum of Tribal Art in Bhopal. This Madhya Pradesh itinerary which is of 7 days in Madhya Pradesh, covers some of the famous historical places in Madhya Pradesh and the places to visit in Madhya Pradesh.

Map of Madhya Pradesh

Map of Madhya Pradesh

Day One Bhopal – Taj-ul-Masajid & Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum

It is appropriate to start the 7 day Madhya Pradesh itinerary from Bhopal, the capital of the state. Bhopal is well connected by air, road, and rail to other cities of India. Bhopal is a city of lakes and there are many points of interest, but focusing on our heritage trip in Madhya Pradesh, the first day would be devoted to visiting two of the top places to visit in Bhopal.

Taj-ul-Masajid

Tajul Masajid

One monument that is associated with Madhya Pradesh’s history in Bhopal is the Taj-ul-Masajid . The magnificent mosque dates back to the late 19th century and is a beautiful blend of Mughal and Indo-Islamic architectural styles. It combines the best of elements of Jama Masjid in Delhi and the Grand Mosque in Lahore.

The mosque can accommodate more than 175,000 people and is said to be the largest mosque not only in India but in Asia too. The mosque was a dream of the famous begum of Bhopal, Begum Shahjahan, who conceived and ordered it to be built. But she never lived to see it completed. The mosque was finally completed by Sultan Jehan Begum.

Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum

Madhya Pradesh Itinerary

Madhya Pradesh is known for its rich tribal culture and heritage. With about 46 different tribes in Madhya Pradesh, it is a treasure chest of indigenous tribal art and culture. To get a feel of the tribal culture at one single place, an excellent place to visit in Bhopal is the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum. The state of the art museum showcases the lifestyle and tribal culture of Madhya Pradesh. Seven of the major tribes of Madhya Pradesh, Gond, Bhil, Sahariya, Korku, Baiga, Kol, and Bhariya are showcased here,

Day Two Bhopal -Bhimbetka Rock Shelters & Bhojeshwar Temple

If you are in Bhopal, you cannot miss visiting two of the important places to visit in MP. Both of these places are a must in any heritage tour in Madhya Pradesh. They are not located in Bhopal city, but both can be easily covered in a short day trip from Bhopal.

Bhimbetka Rock Shelters

Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh is an important place to visit in any Madhya Pradesh tour itinerary. Bhimbetka is located about 45 kilometres from the city of Bhopal. The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters are part of a UNESCO World Heritage SIte and consist of rock-cut caves which are evidence of the earliest human settlement in the country and the subcontinent. The caves have paintings that date from the Mesolithic period to the historical period.

Bhojeshwar Temple

Bhojpur Temple

One of the lesser-known historical monuments of Madhya Pradesh stands impressively just 28 kilometres from the city of Bhopal. Bhojpur Madhya Pradesh was the seat of Raja Bhoj and the Bhojeshwar temple stands as testimony to the king’s passion for art and architecture. The temple dates back to the year 1010.

The temple is shrouded in mystery and intrigue as the temple was never completed. It has one of the largest Shivlings in the country, which is worshipped, in spite of the fact that it was damaged during its construction. Evidence suggests that the Bhojpur temple was planned as a massive temple complex. It is interesting to note that the construction of this temple happened around the same time when the famous temple of Thanjavur , the Brihadeshwara temple was built.

Day Three – Sanchi & Udayagiri

The Eastern Gate At Sanchi Stupa

Sanchi Madhya Pradesh, the UNESCO World Heritage Site in India is one of the gems of Madhya Pradesh tourism and also probably one of the top tourist places in MP. any tour looking to explore the culture and heritage in Madhya Pradesh would be incomplete without a visit to Sanchi. Sanchi is the site of the famous Stupa that was ordered to be built by Ashoka in the 3rd Century BCE. What can be seen today is of course not the original Stupa, as it has been covered and embellished over successive centuries.

One of the major attractions to look forward to when visiting the Sanchi Stupa are the exquisitely carved Torans or gates at the four cardinal points of the Stupa that date back to the 2nd Century BC. An interesting Sound & Light show enthrals visitors with the history of Sanchi in the evenings. On a 7 day Madhya Pradesh itinerary, the Sanch Stupa can be visited in the morning and visitors can return again in the evening for the Sound & Light show.

Udayagiri Caves

Just within 10 kilometres from Sanchi is located another attraction that brings alive the heritage of Madhya Pradesh. These are the Udayagiri Caves, a site that has stayed in the shadow of the more illustrious Sanch Stupa. On the cultural and heritage Madhya Pradesh itinerary of 7 days, one can visit the Udayagiri Caves after visiting the Sanchi Stupa and before enjoying the Sound & Light show at Sanchi.

The Udayagiri Caves are a series of rock-cut cave temples and sculptures that date back to the Gupta period, between the 4th and 5th centuries. The iconic sculpture not to be missed in Udayagiri Caves is that of a massive Varaha, the boar Avatar of Lord Vishnu holding Ganga on his left shoulder. There are in all about 20 caves that are dedicated to Hindu Gods, Goddesses and symbology as well as to Jain Gods and religious symbology.

Day Four – Chanderi

Badal Mahal Chanderi

A lesser-known gem on the Madhya Pradesh tourist map is Chanderi Madhya Pradesh. A place where history serenades visitors at every bend in the road. The small town of Chanderi is known for its iconic sarees by the same name, however not many know about its historical significance.

Badal Mahal Chanderi

A visit to Chanderi is an essential part of any culture and heritage tour in Madhya Pradesh. The first place to visit is the Chanderi Museum run by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which gives an orientation of the history of Chanderi and its strategic importance being near to the ancient Silk Route. Other places to visit on the one day trip to Chanderi are the Chanderi Fort, which houses the Jauhar Smarak and the tomb of the legendary singer Baiju Bawra within its ramparts. Below are the landmarks of Chanderi that can be covered in one day.

  • Chanderi Museum
  • Chanderi Fort
  • Jauhar Smarak
  • Baiju Bawra’s Tomb
  • Jama Masjid
  • Badal Mahal
  • Kati Darwaza
  • Chanderi Handlooms

For a more detailed exploration of Chanderi, a couple of days need to be spared exclusively for the place, as there are many places to visit in the vicinity. These include Shezadi Ka Roza, Nizamuddin Auliya Family Tombs, Battisi Bawidi, the archaeological sites of Buddhi Chanderi, Nanon, and many other sites.

Day Five – Orchha

Orchha

If you visit Madhya Pradesh and do not visit Orchha, your visit would remain incomplete. Orchha is a beautiful town located on the banks of the river Betwa. Orchha is one of the hidden gems of Madhya Pradesh and whether you are spending 6 days in Madhya Pradesh or more, Orchha is a place that needs to be on your Madhya Pradesh itinerary.

There is much to see in Orchha apart from magical sunrises on the banks of the Betwa river. The town of Orchha is like an illustrated history book with its palaces, temples, and cenotaphs. Orchha is famous for its temple where the deity in the form of Rama is worshipped as a king. The places to visit in Orchha are:

  • Ram Raja Temple
  • Orchha Fort, Jahangir Mahal
  • Orchha Fort, Raja Mahal
  • Cenotaphs or Chhatris
  • Chaturbhuj Temple
  • Lakshminarayan Temple

Another ancient temple not to miss is the Jarai Ka Math , a 9th-century temple located about 20 kilometres from Orchha.

Day Six – Khajuraho, On The Heritage Trail in Madhya Pradesh

Jain Temple Khajuraho

The 7 day Madhya Pradesh itinerary culminates befittingly with the last two days devoted to exploring the exquisite temples of Khajuraho. Khajuraho, of course, needs no introduction, as it shines like a jewel on the tourist map of Madhya Pradesh and India. Any Madhya Pradesh travel guide would invariably begin with Khajuraho as its iconic temples are well known throughout the world and many tourists visit India solely for these mesmerizing temples.

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and consists of Jain temples and Hindu temples that were built during the 10th and 11th centuries. About 20 of these grand temples have survived the onslaught of time and nature and stand as a glowing tribute to the master craftsmen who conceived and built them. The temples of Khajuraho are grouped as Eastern Group of temples, Western Group of temples, and Southern Group of temples.

On day 6 of the Madhya Pradesh Itinerary one can visit the Eastern Group and the Southern Group of temples which include the following:

  • Javari Temple
  • Vamana Temple
  • Adinatha Temple
  • Parshvanatha Temple
  • Duladeo Temple

Day Seven – Khajuraho, On The Heritage Trail in Madhya Pradesh

Duladeo Temple Khajuraho

On the last day of the 7 day Madhya Pradesh Itinerary, the Western Group of temples of Khajuraho are sure to enthral visitors with their exquisite architecture and sculpture. The temples to visit are:

  • Kandariya Mahadev Temple
  • Lakshmana Temple
  • Jagadamba Temple
  • Devi Mandap
  • Varaha Mandap

There are some other places worth visiting in and around Khajuraho which can be visited if on a flexible itinerary, and these are listed below:

  • Archaeological Museum
  • Raneh Waterfalls
  • Kalinjar Fort
  • Ajaigarh Fort

Wow, this trip looks amazing. You have really filled the 7 days and the photos are stunning. We have always wanted to do a tour of India, hopefully in the next few years, so will be saving some of these temples to add to our list.

Wow all of these sites look incredible to visit! I have never been to this part of the world, but I love all things heritage. You’ve added a few things to my bucket list!

Wow that is incredible that the Taj-ul-Masajid can accommodate 175 000 people – that is huge! It is so sad that the person that started it never lived to see it completed, what a pity. It is truly majestic and beautiful. It is so interesting looking at those cave paintings at Bhimbetka – we also have lots of cave paintings here in South Africa.

These are stunning! And 175,000 people, that’s incredible. This looks like a lovely area, rich with culture and history, an excellent place to visit!

Bhojeshwar Temple is surely on our bucket list for long & your post helped to add few more places making it a 3 days trip to bhopal in 2021

Madhya Pradesh trip is in my wishlist since long time, especially I am excited to visit Bhimbetka, Khajuraho and Pachmarhi. We’ll sure plan a trip once. Your post will help then a lot.

I have heard some fab things about MP. Been to Indore only, but I plan to visit Bhopal too. Your blog is my go-to guide. Thank you.

I only visited MP during our Bank training and that time we dint had so much time to roam around. Will refer this blog once i will visit MP again after this lockdown. Thanks for writing, its worth sharing 🙂

I love the addition of the map. Makes everything so easy to find and follow! Thanks so much for sharing

Wow, your photos are stunning! I would love to tour India one day – I’d definitely add Madhya Pradesh to my itinerary. Gorgeous!

I am from MP but unfortunately I havent explored it much. I would love to visit Bhimbetka, Sanch Stupa and Khajuraho some day soon.

Having spent almost 3 years of my life in Indore for my Masters, I had the opportunity to visit some of these places. Its a truly fascinating and colourful state.

What does rock-cut caves mean? Does it mean manmade? I love caves, so Bhimbetka sounds intriguing.

It’s amazing how some of these ancient sites have stood the test of time. I’d love to visit The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters it’s incredible to think that humans left their mark there from around 12 thousand – 1 million years ago. One day I hope to explore India.

I loved all of your photos! I’ve never thought about visiting India but you just changed my mind!

So many things to see in a short time in Madhya Pradesh. I think you would really be hurrying to see it all. I would love to see the drawings at Bhimbetka Rock Shelters. I bet they are so interesting. I would also love to visit any of the tiger preserves. How amazing they would be to see in the wild.

Fantastic list of heritage sites in Madhya Pradesh. I would especially love to see the pre-historic rock caves of Bhimbetka…so incredible to think how long ago the artwork was created. It also surprised me to see the erotic nature of many of the sculptures. (*blushing*) The tiger preserve sounds pretty cool, too. Thank you for sharing this rich collection of historic attractions. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about them and will keep them in mind when planning a visit to India.

The history in India is overwelming. I’m a caver lover so I would definitely want to visit the caves. Seeing the writing on the walls can’t help but bring your imagination back to that period in time. They are so beautiful!

Wow, this area of the country is so full of history and some unexpected and really ancient history too. I can’t wait to get to India in the next year or so and it’s these types of places we really are looking forward to seeing. Great guide.

Okay so I gave up writing notes of all the places I wanted to visit in Madhya Pradesh because the list was pretty much every single heritage site listed here in your Madhya Pradesh itinerary. So I am just bookmarking it. I think if I only could choose three though I would first want to discover the ancient man by first seeing the petroglyphs and other cave art at Bhimbetka Rock Shelters. There’s something about how ancient man told stories and communicated that intrigues me. I would also like to see the Sanchi not only for the gates but perhaps to learn more about the prehistoric humans at that time. With regards to beauty, no doubt I would want to see and explore Taj-ul-Masajid if they let me.

The heart of India indeed. I had my itinerary sorted. Pench, Orchha, Panchmari Bhimbetka and Sanchi were my top targets. I thought of two weeks. In future, I would be needing a more compact itinerary. 7days itinerary is good enough for me. And you have my favourite places included. 😇🌸 I am totally following it in the near future!!!

While Madhya Pradesh has some of the most historic sites, I generally associate it more with rustic landscape and forests. In my opinion, it has some of the India’s best forest land. My favorite pick of sites are Sanchi, Khajuraho, and Orchha. The Bhimbetka caves are certainly the most historic among all places in India. Thanks for such a detailed guide.

I have been to Madhya Pradesh several times for several reasons – once to explore its heritage past, other time to get upclose to its wildlife and definitely food has been the highlight of every trip. Sanchi and Bhimbetka Caves were really peaceful experiences for me. I can’t wait to go back.

WOW. The architecture of these structures are just incredible. They are designed so intricately. When I make it to India one day I certainly would like to see and photograph some of these. Thank you for sharing!

Madhya Pradesh is beautiful, there is so much to see in Madhya Pradesh.

There is so much diversity in every part of india, isn’t it? What strikes me most about MP is the abundance of its natural landscape. Orchha is an offbeat and unusual destination and every heritage fan will love it.

Somehow the architecture of Bhojeshwar Temple reminded me of The Game of Throne. I think because of its size also. There are so much history in this part of the country only. A mix of Moslem and Hinduism. I wonder which one came to the land first.

Total distance covered : ~5000 km

On our Madhya Pradesh Road trip itinerary, we drove all the way from Bangalore to MP and back. On this trip to Madhya Pradesh, we took some of the best road trips of India like Bangalore to Hyderabad, Pachmarhi to Nagpur, Bhopal to Pachmarhi . Also, we drove through some very scenic stretches of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana while on the road trip from Hyderabad to Nagpur. We stayed in some of the finest accommodations and enjoyed sumptuous meals at some places. While at others, we stayed in economic accommodations. Also, we crossed some of the mightiest rivers of India, visited valleys and waterfalls, reserve forests and tiger reserves. We visited several UNESCO World heritage monuments, renowned temples, forts and palaces of uttermost historical significance. And brought back home endless memories. Day 1: Bangalore – Hyderabad

Since we drove all the way from Bangalore, we had to halt in between for two nights. First we drove from Bangalore to Hyderabad. We stayed in Hotel Oakwood Residence Kapil in Hyderabad . It was an excellent accommodation at a very reasonable price, a total steal I would say. And it was an apart hotel with fully equipped kitchen. I will highly recommend it for a stay at Hyderabad. it was very near to NH44 on which we drove through out, so, we completely avoided the city traffic by staying here.

We started from home around 5:00am and reached Hyderabad by 3:30pm in the evening. Also, for today, we had packed our lunch from home. So, we just stopped over at a nice stretch to have our lunch on the way, which saved us a lot of time.

Day 2: Hyderabad – Nagpur

On the next day we drove from Hyderabad to Nagpur. The whole stretch of drive through Telangana and Andhra was so scenic and beautiful that it is difficult to capture in words. We booked Le Meridian Nagpur for an overnight stay, again near the highway. There are ample dhabas and restaurants on this stretch which you cross around lunch time, so, you can conveniently stop at one of those for food. We started from Hyderabad around 7 am in the morning. We had toasted bread in our apart-hotel and made peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast. While for lunch, we stopped at a dhaba. To be honest, the stretch of the road once we entered Maharashtra, was pathetic. It slowed us down a lot. And we reached our hotel in Nagpur by 5:00pm in the evening.

Day 3: Nagpur – Jabalpur

Finally, on the third day of our Madhya Pradesh road trip itinerary we actually reached Madhya Pradesh 🙂 . And the first city in Madhya Pradesh that we visited was Jabalpur. Post breakfast, we started from Nagpur around 9:30am. After entering Madhya Pradesh, the road condition was again much better. It kept improving as we covered the distance and got closer to Jabalpur. Around 2:30 pm, we reached Jabalpur. But, instead of going to our hotel, Hotel Shawn Elizy , we decided to first explore Bhedaghat . Which is located right on the opposite side on highway. Here, we visited the Dhuandhar Waterfalls, one of the most massive waterfalls of Madhya Pradesh. And then visited the Narmada Valley, witnessing the famous marble rocks. Later, we proceeded to Chausath Yogini Temple and few other landmarks before heading to our hotel.

Our stay in Jabalpur was one of the best. Once again, highly recommend the hotel Shawn Elizy. You can book it from here .

Day 4 & 5 : Jabalpur to Bandhavgarh National Park, Tiger Safari

On the fourth day of our Madhya Pradesh road trip itinerary, we drove from Jabalpur to Bandhavgarh National Park via Pench National Park & Umaria. And I must say, it was one of the most scenic road trips in Madhya Pradesh that we took. The green ghats of Pench National Park and beyond and the excellent road around these ghats made the drive an absolute pleasure. We spent the last 1 hour of our drive covering the last 30km between Umaria and Bandhavgarh since it was a narrow one way road, with  numerous deliberate speed bumps pertaining to the national park zone.

We reached our resort, Bandhavgarh Nature Heritage Resort , by 4:00pm. And after checking-in, made a prompt reservation for the tiger safari the next morning. We did get to see a tiger the next day! And lots of other wild animals greeted us as well. The complete detail of Bandhavgarh Tiger Safari and other places to visit in Bandhavgarh are covered in this post on our complete guide to Bandhavgarh National Park and tiger safari in it. Post the safari, we just relaxed in the resort for the rest of the day.

Day 6: Bandhavgarh to Khajuraho

The sixth day of our Madhya Pradesh road trip itinerary was one of the most challenging ones. When we drove from Bandhavgarh to Khajuraho today, for the most part of the journey, we drove through state highways. The road condition was still ok. But we met herds of cattle on the way, which made it really challenging to drive through them. Finally on the last 100km stretch, we drove on NH39, which was a pleasure. And finally, we reached our hotel in Khajuraho, hotel Clarks Khajuraho , around 2:00pm.

Vamana Temple

After a quick lunch, we headed out to explore the Eastern Group of Temples and Southern Group of Temples in Khajuraho. If you are wondering how to explore the temples of Khajuraho or which itinerary to follow, check out our detailed writing on the same ;

The must visit temples of Khajuraho and how best to cover them all in a day’s span

Day 7: Western Group of Temples, Khajuraho and Khajuraho to Orchha

Today, we reserved the early morning hours to visit the Western Group of Temples in Khajuraho. Since, these are the most famous and get very crowded as the day progresses. Luckily, our plan did work out. After starting from our hotel around 6:00am in the morning, we were back by 9:00am. Post which, we had our breakfast. And then we headed to the next stop on our MP Road Trip Itinerary – Orchha. The drive from Khajuraho to Orchha was completely on NH39. But, it was a bitter sweet one. Since, some parts of the NH have been upgraded to 4 or even 6 lane highway . And we drove so smoothly at these stretches. The other stretches near villages and towns are still under construction. And the diversions were painful. Hopefully the work completes soon.

madhya pradesh tourism itinerary

Nevertheless, we reached Orchha comfortably by 1:00pm. After checking in and having lunch, we just relaxed for the day. The hotel that we had booked had an access to Betwa River via it’s back gate. So, we went and sat on the rocks by the river bank in the evening. However, due to certain hygiene issues, we will not recommend this hotel to you. You can book your accommodation in Orchha using this link .

Day 8 :  Exploring Orchha

We spent the next day exploring Orchha. Today, we explored the Orchha Fort, the Chattris, some temples of Orchha etc. Here’s our detailed post on exploring the Orchha Fort and rest of the places in Orchha :

Orchha Fort and other places to explore in Orchha

Day 9: Orchha to Gwalior day trip

One can easily do a day trip to the Gwalior Fort from Orchha. The driving distance from Gwalior to Orchha is 2 hours. And you can visit the famous Gwalior Fort, perhaps the largest and most massive of all forts in this area.

Day 10: Orchha to Bhopal via Sanchi and Udayagiri

We worked from Orchha for one week . But, we are skipping that part for you. The next day, we started on a road trip to Bhopal . Visiting the great stupa of Sanchi and the Udayagiri Caves on the way. Also, we caught a glimpse of the Raisen Fort before reaching Bhopal. However, we didn’t have time to stop by it. I have reserved it for the next time. On this road trip, we started really early from our hotel in Orchha, by 8:00am. And by noon, we had reached the town of Vidisha. It took us some time to navigate through the traffic here. And then we stopped at Udayagiri caves around 3:00pm.

madhya pradesh tourism itinerary

After visiting Udayagiri caves, we went on to visit the Great Stupa of Sanchi. And then from there, we started for our hotel in Bhopal by 6:00pm. We reached our hotel, MPT Kerwa Bhopal, by 8:00pm at night. And after a quick checkin we ordered our dinner at the room, got fresh and slept off.

Day 11 : Bhopal to Pachmarhi road trip

Today, post breakfast, around 9:00am, we embarked further on our MP road trip, from Bhopal to Pachmarhi. It was a nice trip. For, the roads were excellent and some of the valleys and ghats that we drove through were the most beautiful so far. We took a lunch break at a cafe-restaurant right before starting our ascent to the Pachmarhi hill. Actually, the ghat road to Pachmarhi is narrow and almost single lane. With lots of blind turns. So, we drove at an average of 20-30km per hour on this route. And reached our hotel, Welcome Heritage Golf View Pachmarhi , around 3:00pm.

madhya pradesh tourism itinerary

After checking-in , we settled down in our rooms and relaxed for the rest of the day. We also worked from Pachmarhi for a week . And really enjoyed our stay at Welcome Heritage Golf View.

Day 12: Exploring Pachmarhi

There are so many natural places to explore around Pachmarhi that seriously, one day is not at all sufficient. We visited a few places like the Panch Pandava Caves and the Apsara Vihar during weekdays after office or early in the morning. Since, these were at walking distance from where we stayed. If you have just one day, we recommend visiting these places in Pachmarhi :-

  • Jata Shankar Caves
  • Mahadev Hill
  • Panch Pandava Caves
  • Apsara Vihar
  • Duchess Falls

But again, you will not be able to stay for too long on any of these places. So, we highly recommend make it a 2 days trip of exploring around when in Pachmarhi.

madhya pradesh tourism itinerary

Day 13: Pachmarhi

You must spend one day at Pachmarhi doing nothing. Just enjoying the cool vibes of the natural surroundings. Pack a picnic bag or just relax in the lawn of your hotel, like we did in ours – Welcome Heritage Golf View Pachmarhi. Although, we also worked from Pachmarhi for a week when there, we are not counting those days in this Madhya Pradesh Road trip itinerary. WelcomeHeritage Golf View Pachmarhi provided for an excellent wifi network which enabled us to work uninterrupted. In case you visited a few of the places mentioned for day 12, and others are still to be explored, you can explore them as well today.

Day 14: Pachmarhi to Nagpur

This one was the best of all the road trips we took while on our Madhya Pradesh Road trip itinerary! As if nature had saved the best for the last for us. Most of the route is beautiful ghats, with excellent road condition.

madhya pradesh tourism itinerary

And then these picture perfect patches of mustard plants in the hills – just made our day.

madhya pradesh tourism itinerary

We crossed some very scenic, very beautiful ghats today and finally reached Nagpur by 5:00pm in the evening.

Day 15: Nagpur to Hyderabad

Early in the morning around 6:00am, we started from Nagpur. On the way we stopped for breakfast. And then we drove straight to Hyderabad. Reached our hotel, once again, hotel Oakwood Residency Kapil, by 3:30pm. After a swift check-in, we had our lunch in the food court right besides the hotel. And then we just relaxed in the room.

Day 16: Hyderabad to Bangalore

Finally came the day on our Madhya Pradesh road trip itinerary when we reached back to home sweet home. Morning, we had a hefty and delicious breakfast at our hotel in Hyderabad. I must say, their breakfast spread was one of the best we had on this trip. After this, we checked out around 7:30am from our hotel. It was a very smooth, quick and contactless checkout – thanks to the staff for the same. We stopped on our way for lunch break at a dhaba but it was not very great. After this, we drove straight to Bangalore with just a few refreshment breaks now and then. And reached home by 6:00pm!!

We actually completed the above trip in 3 weeks since we worked for a week from Orchha and then for another week we worked from Pachmarhi. So, you can also do the same if you are interested.

Some common observations from our MP Road trip

  • Most of the national highways are in good condition. Some like NH34, NH39 and the stretches of highways that pass through National Parks like Pench National Park and Panna National Park are in excellent condition
  • Many of the state highways are also in good condition, with intermittent patches of bad road.
  • Cattle on the road seems to be a common problem across all NH and SH in MP. You have to be really careful, particularly when driving at night, as there could be cows sitting right in the middle of the highway and you could hit them.
  • There are ample restaurants and food outlets on major stretches that the tourists often take. Like Bhopal to Pachmarhi, Orchha to Bhopal, Jabalpur to Bandhavgarh. But on other less frequently used routes like Bandhavgarh to Khajuraho, we hardly found any proper restaurants or food outlets. However, since most of the hops can be completed in about half a day, it’s not a  big problem.
  • There are ample fuel stations on both National Highways and State Highways.
  • People, just like in any other part of India, are very friendly, very helping. If you need directions on the road or any other help, they will go out of their way to help you out.
  • Hospitality was excellent at every single accommodation we stayed in. So, I would generously generalise that Madhya Pradesh is very hospitable!!
  • Use packaged drinking water as water borne diseases are common, particularly post monsoons.
  • Carry mosquito and insect repellant, they are particularly helpful in forest and hill areas.
  • October – March will be the best time to explore Madhya Pradesh. Even in October, the temperature in some places like Orchha was almost 34-35 degree celcius during the day. It was pretty hot!
  • When visiting Pachmarhi, on the contrast, you will require light woollen in October and March and heavy woollen in between these months.

The transformational travel guide

Offbeat and local Madhya Pradesh itinerary

Chattris in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is a state in the very centre of India, often referred to as the heart of India. In Madhya Pradesh, they do things on a smaller, more local scale. They treasure the offbeat. They preserve traditions. They protect nature and wildlife, especially tigers. And they take a responsible approach to tourism that empowers women, supports local communities, promotes traditional arts and crafts, manages waste sustainably, offers accessible travel solutions, and much more.

Madhya Pradesh is the ideal location in India for a local, offbeat itinerary. In this offbeat and local tour of Madhya Pradesh, you will visit a magnificent fort in Gwalior , ancient temples in Khajuraho , community-run homestays, a tiger reserve , and much more.

But to be honest, this itinerary only captures a fraction of the amazing destinations tourists can visit in Madhya Pradesh. The state captured my heart years ago, and it remains one of my favourite states in India. I loved putting together this offbeat and local Madhya Pradesh itinerary for others to follow and enjoy.

Women at a homestay in Madhya Pradesh, India

The Offbeat and Local Madhya Pradesh Itinerary is based on many trips to Madhya Pradesh and a very special trip that took place in September 2022 when I was part of a group led by Harold Goodwin , founder and director for the International Centre for Responsible Tourism, and the Madhya Pradesh Tourism department to explore responsible tourism initiatives across the state.

The Responsible Tourism Mission in Madhya Pradesh (RTMMP) is driving the support for many innovative programs including rural tourism , home stays, responsible souvenirs, clean destinations, accessibility, Safe tourism destinations for women, tribal tourism, solar energy, and more. This has resulted in both community development and immersive and culturally authentic experiences for visitors. I was able to experience many of them myself on the 2022 trip, and was extremely impressed with the results. I was particularly pleased to see so many confident women working happily in the tourism sector — a rarity in India.

Madhya Pradesh is not well known to foreign visitors – with the exception of tiger and wildlife tourism – so I hope those adventurous travellers who like to go a little off the beaten path will consider this itinerary. You will not be disappointed.

Gwalior Fort, Madhya Pradesh, India

Gwalior ~ A historical city with a modern heartbeat, there is a lot to see and do in Gwalior, and this is where we start our itinerary. Gwalior is easily reached by rail or flight and is only a three-hour drive from Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. The Taj Express Highway connects Gwalior to Agra (120 kilometres) and Delhi. You can easily travel from Delhi to Agra, and then on to Gwalior – gateway to Madhya Pradesh.

The 8th-century Gwalior Fort is worth the trip to Gwalior alone. One of India’s largest and most magnificent forts, it sits on a plateau overlooking the city. Amazingly, the colourful frescoes that adorn the exterior walls are still intact. The extensive grounds around the fort also feature the 9th-century Sas-Bahu Temples , covered in exquisite carvings. Sas-Bahu means “mother with her daughter-in-law,” indicating the close relationship between the twin temples.

Gwalior Fort is also home to a small, 9th-Century temple carved into its solid rock face. Chaturbhuj Temple is much like many other ancient temples in India – except it’s famous for being the oldest example of zero as a written digit: carved into the temple wall is a 9th-Century inscription that includes the clearly visible number 270.

Gwalior Fort temple, Madhya Pradesh, India

Of course, there’s much more to see and do in Gwalior aside from the fort, such as Gopachal Parvat (a series of 24 soaring Jain sculptures ), Man Singh Palace , and Jai Vilas Palace . Both palaces display wonderful – and sometimes eclectic – collections of art, antiques, weaponry, artefacts, and photographs. Gwalior is also known for lively markets, so shopping should be included in your itinerary.

There are also fascinating sites to see within driving distance of Gwalior, in Morena district, and these should also be on your itinerary. At Mitawali (about 25 kilometres from Gwalior) is the impressive Chausath Yogini Temple – said to be the inspiration for India’s Parliament buildings in Delhi. The Bateswar Temples , near the village of Padavali (about 40 kilometres from Gwalior), are a group of about 200 temples spread across 25 acres. It’s an active archaeological site under the direction of renowned archaeologist K.K. Muhammed.

Homestay in Madhya Pradesh, India

Where to stay in Gwalior

The ideal place to stay to absorb the historical culture of Gwalior is Krishnayan Homestay . Built more than a century ago, in 1920, this stately haveli captures the regal ambience of the past when Gwalior was a princely state. Seven spacious rooms, plus courtyards, and a lofty lobby, are beautifully decorated with antiques, family heirlooms, artworks, chandeliers, swings, and carpets. The family lives on the property and warmly welcomes guests, generously sharing their home and their culture.

Chattris in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Orchha ~ Just about a two-hour drive from Gwalior, Orchha is a very special place, one of my favourite places to visit in India. This small, picturesque town on the Betwa River features both the peace and beauty of a rural setting and a treasure trove of antiquity in the form of palaces, forts, monuments, and temples, surrounded by forests.

Within a two-kilometre radius, visitors will find an astonishing array of buildings in an excellent state of maintenance. The unexpected sight of these architectural gems gives credence to a belief that the word Orchha means hidden, and the incredible treasures of this historic city were actually built to be hidden by the Bundela Rajput ruler Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century.

The buildings fall into four groups:

  • The palace complex consists of Jahangir Mahal, Raj Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, and Rai Parveen Mahal
  • The Ram Raja complex consists of Ram Raja Temple, Chaturbhuj Temple, Dinman Hardol Palace, and Sawan Bhadon
  • The Laxminarayan Temple and Sundar Mahal complex
  • The Chhattris on the Betwa River

Collosol Jahangir Mahal – with 236 chambers – is perhaps the most magnificent of Orchha’s treasures. Building probably began during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, but it was completed in Emperor Jahangir’s time, and named after him by Bir Singh Deo, ruler of Orchha. But the most evocative view in Orchha is the sight of the magnificent chhattris , lined up along the Betwa River, their reflections shimmering in the water. There are 14 chhattris – cenotaphs – that date from the 16th to the 18th centuries. They are designed to look like temples and were built in memory of the royal rulers of Orchha.

Hotel in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

Where to stay in Orchha

There are several good heritage hotels in Orchha. On our trip, we stayed at the Amar Mahal Hotel . A comfortable hotel designed in a style that reflects the beautiful architecture of Orchha, the large property includes several courtyards and a swimming pool. The Sheesh Mahal has been converted into a hotel and offers a very atmospheric stay as it is adjacent to Jahangir Mahal.

Ladpura Khas Homestays

Homestay in Madhya Pradesh, India

Ladpura Khas Homestays ~ Just 15 minutes’ drive from Orchha, you reach Ladpura Khas and another world. This rural village is host to several homestays including Rekha and Kamla Homestays , Mahua Hill View Homestay , and Sheetla Greens Homestay . They were developed under an innovative program from Madhya Pradesh Tourism to support the local community, empower women, promote cultural traditions, and preserve the environment.

These charming homestays are owned and managed by women of the community, and they offer guests the opportunity to really experience rural Indian life – which is something not to be missed. Each homestay has separate rooms or cottages that were purpose-built to meet international standards and expectations. They are simple and rustic, but very clean and comfortable and they have all the amenities a traveller needs.

But more than that, when you stay at one of the Ladpura Khas homestays (or any of the many other homestays developed across Madhya Pradesh under this scheme), you really immerse in the local culture . You follow the rhythms and patterns of village life, enjoy food made from ingredients sourced from the fields around you, take part in local festivals, learn about traditional arts and crafts, and much more.

Staying at one of the Ladpura Khas homestays is an opportunity to have a completely authentic cultural experience and engage with local people, who welcome visitors with open arms and open hearts. It is an indelible and unforgettable experience.

Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, India

Khajuraho ~ Khajuraho is s small, sleepy town just a three-hour drive from Orchha – and only 30 minutes’ drive to Panna National Park. It’s a charming place with one major draw: the Khajuraho Group of Monuments (and especially the Western Group). The 23 temples are distributed across six square kilometres and surrounded by a picturesque landscape. They form the western, eastern, and southern clusters of the Khajuraho Group of Monuments.

Many people – including experts – agree that the UNESCO-inscribed temples of Khajuraho are the finest in India , both in terms of the quality of the carvings and the architecture. They represent the pinnacle of temple architectural development in northern India. The best temples are in the Western Group, which requires an entrance fee. There is also a sound and light show there each evening.

North India, places to visit in India, tourist places in India

Khajuraho is infamous for the “erotic” carvings on some of the temples. There is a lot of speculation and misunderstanding about these carvings. A guide at Khajuraho said the figures are neither erotic nor obscene. He said they are Mithuna figures that represent divine love , and the union of Shiva (male) and Shakti (female) energies. There are thousands of temple carvings that show people doing everyday things such as eating, dancing, and fighting. The idea is that pilgrims visiting the temples were supposed to reflect on all aspects of life as they circled the temples and eventually rise above them in spiritual ecstasy.

But Khajuraho is not just a historic tourist destination – it’s also an innovative one, thanks to the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board. They initiated a Safe Tourist Destination for Women in Madhya Pradesh program in the Khajuraho-Panna region to help make women tourists feel safe. There are many aspects to the program, but ultimately the goal is to employ more women in the tourism sector, giving them more visibility. Women are now driving e-rickshaws, working as safari guides, selling souvenirs, and even providing security. Several hundred women have been trained in self-defence and they work at tourism events – wearing jackets that proclaim “you are safe in the heart of India.”

You can either choose to stay one night in Khajuraho, or stay at a lodge near Panna and drive to Khajuraho to see the temples. See lodge options below.

Tiger cubs on rocks in Panna, Madhya Pradesh

Madla / Panna ~ Just 30 minutes drive from Khajuraho, Panna National Park is one of India’s premier tiger reserves. And right at the entrance gate is Madla, a small town that has been developed by Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board’s rural tourism project. Madla’s intangible heritage includes folk music and dance, local festivals, and Bundelkhand cuisine. Bundelkhand is an historic area that is now spread over 13 districts in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and includes Orchha and Khajuraho within its boundaries.

A highlight of visiting Madla is a stop at the Madla Craft Centre , a livelihood program run by Pashoo Pakshee and supported by Madhya Pradesh Tourism. The organization trains and employs women to make souvenirs that celebrate the diversity of Indian flora and fauna. They work with communities that share their boundaries with protected forests, and the animal-themed, hand-made, and very charming souvenirs are sold at tiger reserves. A wonderful byproduct of their endeavours helps to raise awareness of the need for conservation among these communities. Stop in to find a wide assortment of unique bags, toys, wallets, jewellery, scarves and many other artfully made items.

Of course, Panna National Park is itself a big draw as it is a popular and very beautiful tiger reserve. A jungle safari in Panna is a perfect way to see this park up close, and to enjoy the both the scenic beauty of the park and the array of wildlife. Panna is about 543 square kilometres, and the rugged landscape is hilly, with plateaus and gorges, and dotted with several ancient temples.

Panna is home to various species of birds, animals, and flora, including tigers, leopards, chinkara, sambar deer, wolves, and many more. Since 2009, they have made a big effort to restore the tiger population (after poaching completely wiped them all out). They are now 80-86 adult tigers in Panna .

Walking in forest in Madhya Pradesh

As well as going on a wildlife in Panna, you can also go on a Walk with the Pardhis on a designated trail. Pardhis are a nomadic community that were hired to help with the shikar (hunting) since the time of the Mughals. Nowadays, due to combined efforts of the Forest Department and NGO’s, many have given up hunting. The Walk with the Pardhis offers these knowledgeable people (both men and women) an alternate livelihood – and gives visitors an incredible opportunity to see the forest through their eyes. Walking in the forest with people from the Pardhi community can help visitors reconnect to the wilderness, learn to read the forest like a book, and gain some of the age old knowledge of the Pardhi community. Walk with the Pardhis is an initiative undertaken by Last Wilderness Foundation in association with Taj Safaris and the Forest Department, Panna Tiger Reserve.

Where to stay in Madla / Panna

Ken River Lodge: My number one choice is the Ken River Lodge. The very first wildlife lodge opened by Pugdundee Safaris , Ken River Lodge is right on the river, near the Madla gate of Panna National Park. It’s just rustic enough to make you feel you are completely immersed in a natural environment, and just luxurious enough to make you feel safe and comfortable. Plus, the food is fabulous – and served in a kind of tree house dining room overlooking the river. Pugdundee Safaris is known for top-notch naturalists who will take you on wildlife safaris into the Panna.

Book here: Ken River Lodge .

Sarai at Toria cottage, Madhya Pradesh

Sarai at Toria: Sarai at Toria is a very special place, lovingly created by husband-and-wife team Dr. Raghu Chundawat and Joanna Van Gruisen, both wildlife and conservation experts. As their website states: “Our aim is to manage the Sarai at Toria in an environmentally and socially responsible manner, providing comfort and indulgence while protecting the natural and the cultural environment.” Sarai at Toria is set on a beautiful property, just slightly remote, and designed to resemble a local village. Cottages and the lodge building – the baithak, or pavilion – are made of natural materials and constructed in the local, time-honoured way with mud walls and thatch roofs. Peaceful, natural, and inviting – you will not want to leave.

Book here: Sarai at Toria .

Tendu Leaf Jungle Resort: Tendu Leaf Jungle Resort is a large, expansive lodge with wooden cottage spread out across the property. A dining room on the river, nature walks, a swimming pool, and lots of activities make it ideal for families and groups. The quality of the food at Tendu Leaf is exceptional, and adds to the experience of staying here.

Hindustan ka Dil Dekha?

Well, it is never too late! Madhya Pradesh always welcomes you with open arms, and lots more! Step back in time at the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, relive the regal lifestyle of the biggest Rajas and Maharajas of all times at Gwalior, get awed by the many wonders of nature in Jabalpur, spend some peaceful moments in Pachmarhi or Sanchi, or gear up for exciting wildlife encounters at Kanha or Bandhavgarh.

You can never run out of things to do in Madhya Pradesh , with each corner of the state offering unmatched, unforgettable travel experiences. As Incredible India rightly puts it: Hindustan ka Dil Dekho!

Fly into the royal city of Gwalior, home to many magnificent forts and palaces. The day will be about a tête-à-tête with history for you, and you’re sure to have hundreds of photographs and countless interesting anecdotes to share from this visit.

Your first stop here will be the Gwalior Fort, among the top tourist attractions in Madhya Pradesh. Dating back to at least the 10th century, this is among the biggest forts in India, is a testimony to the rich heritage of our country and offers stunning bird’s eye views of the city of Gwalior.

Other forts to visit here include the Man Singh Palace (known for its exquisite exterior tile work), Jai Vilas Palace (home to the royal Maratha Scindia dynasty) and the palace-turned-museum Gujari Mahal.

An overnight train from Gwalior is an oft recommended way to reach Khajuraho, 280 kilometres away. However, if you have the luxury of time, you can also hire a cab or drive down.

Khajuraho Temple Complex

Welcome to Khajuraho, one of India’s most popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Khajuraho Group of Monuments boasts of a number of Hindu and Jain temples that have been built as per the Nagara style architectural symbolism. Build during the Chandela dynasty around the 11th century, the temples depict many art masterpieces relating to meditation, erotic art, teachings, royalty and other such subjects.

If you’re planning to visit the city in February, you’ll also get a chance to experience the glorious Khajuraho Dance Festival. This is when the entire temple complex comes alive with bright lights, music and various Indian classical dance performances, such as Kathak, Bharathanatyam, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Kathakali by eminent personalities.

This 5-day itinerary only allows one day in Khajuraho, but if you can, spend at least a long weekend here to admire the elaborately designed temples and the intricately carved interiors of the same.

Take an overnight train from Khajuraho to Jabalpur, where an exciting day awaits you.

Relax for a couple of hours before you begin your exploration of the city. Make a beeline for the ruins of Madan Mahal, located atop a hill and dating back to the 11th century. Known to be among the best ancient museums in India, it takes you back to the life and times of the Gond Queen Rani Durgavati and her son Madan Singh. There are many legends associated with the fort, including stories about an underground tunnel as an escape route, speculations about the fort being home to gold bricks from the Gond dynasty treasure and so on.

The famous Balancing Rocks of Jabalpur are also located in close proximity to Madan Mahal. A natural geological formation, it comprises of a big oval rock balancing over other huge stones. Considered to be a natural wonder, it is believed that nothing can disturb this balance. This belief has been further strengthened as the rocks have survived earthquakes of high magnitude as well.

Photo of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India by Ragini Mehra

Yet another popular tourist attraction in Jabalpur is the Rani Durgavati Museum. A must visit for history buffs, it has exhibits in the form of paintings, sculptures, inscriptions, photographs and more.

Later in the day, plan a lunch and cruise at Bargi Dam , built on the Narmada River. Other activities you can indulge in here are water scooter rides, speed boating, paddle boating and birdwatching.

Begin your day with a visit to the glorious Dhuandhar Falls, a 30-metre high waterfall in Bhedaghat. As the name suggests, this smoky cascade is a beautiful sight and a delight for nature lovers as well as photographers. You can opt for a boat ride here or through the natural marble rocks carved by the Narmada River.

Photo of Bheda Ghat, Madhya Pradesh, India by Ragini Mehra

In the evening, get set for your road trip from Jabalpur to Kanha. Hiringa cab is recommended and the distance of about 200 kilometres is covered in 5 hours. The journey begins through green rural landscapes and finally ends in the thick of the Kanha forest, and a starlit sky.

Kanha National Park

An early morning safari in Kanha is a wonderful time to soak in the beauty of the forest and catch a glimpse of the animals in their natural habitat. Wake up at 4 a.m. to be in time for the safari and don’t forget to carry a pair of binoculars (or rent one at the gate). The safari booking needs to be done online and while doing that, research in advance about the core and buffer zones at Kanha National Park. Sighting is often rare in the buffer zone, so it is recommended that you opt for a jeep safari in one of the core zones, Kanha, Kisli, Mukki and Sarhi.

The core zone is also known for dense forests especially during the latter part of the year, with beautiful Sal trees creating picture-perfect moments at every turn. The countless trees also create suspense at every turn, as you wait to see Jungle Cats, Jackals, Barasingha, Gaur, Hyena and more.

Photo of 5 Days in Madhya Pradesh? Here's How to Make the Most of Them. by Ragini Mehra

Also go for an evening safari (try to get a different zone) for up close and personal encounters with wildlife as the sun begins to set. The forest is also home to many varieties of flora and birds, so make sure you ask you guide lots of questions.

Enjoy a fun evening with a bonfire at your resort, and count the stars for as long as you like.

Plan your return journey through Indore, the Street Food Capital of India and stop by at Sarafa Bazar for sampling Poha, Jalebi, Kachori, Moong Bhajiya and Indori Namkeen. There’s no place else that can offer such delicious street food and is sure to make your experience of Madhya Pradesh come a full circle!

The temple looks beautiful in sunlight and inside the idols of the Mother Goddess and Lord Shiva lend a divine aura. The complex of the temple consists of 95 shrines which includes 64 Yoginis in circular fashion around the temple, one for each yoginis and a main shrine where Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati are seen riding on Nandi, the sacred bull. While preparing on the Madhya Pradesh bike tour, I knew I needed a motorcycle that could handle long distances comfortably and tackle varied terrains with ease.

I went for the Dominar 400 , and it turned out to be an excellent decision.

The Dominar's 373cc engine was a powerhouse, delivering a smooth and steady ride whether I was cruising on highways or navigating rough rural paths.

Its reliability was a constant reassurance. The bike's ergonomics were another highlight. The upright riding position and comfortable seating made the long hours on the road less taxing and more enjoyable.

Throughout my journey, the Dominar faced everything from steep hill climbs to narrow village tracks. Its responsive handling made these challenges not just manageable but enjoyable.

The suspension system absorbed the road's roughness, providing a smooth ride even on less-than-ideal surfaces.

For anyone contemplating a bike tour, especially through diverse landscapes like those of Madhya Pradesh, I can confidently say that you should definitely check out the Bajaj Dominar.

This bike is a reliable companion that turned my challenging journey into a memorable adventure.

My Madhya Pradesh Bike Tour was more than a journey, it was an odyssey, urging us to return for yet another chapter of exhilaration.

Ride on, fellow adventurers and do share your experience with us in the comments below if you have gone on a similar biking adventure.

Ujjain, a city located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is a divine land that offers a unique blend of solitude and spiritual experiences. This temple town is renowned for hosting one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, Simhastha (Kumbh Mela), which occurs every 12 years on the banks of the Shipra river.

Also known as the temple town of Madhya Pradesh, the city is home to more than 100 temples and numerous pilgrimage sites of different eras. Here are some famous temples and must-see places in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh for tourists to explore.

Places To Visit In Ujjain

Mahakaleshwar ujjain.

The biggest attraction of Ujjain is the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple . It is one of the 12 jyotirlingas, where Bhasma aarti is a daily ritual that you must not miss and this is what Ujjain is famous for. The process begins with the 'Abhishek' or the ritual bath of the shivling then smearing it with multiple offerings like curd, honey, sandal paste and finally cleaning it with milk and water. Finally, the Shiva linga is decorated with ash and shringaar material.  To attend the Bhasma aarti, make sure to go through the prior registration process from the authorized website https://shrimahakaleshwar.com/ .

According to ancient legends, the foundation of the temple was laid by the Lord Brahma (God of Creation). It was considered by historians that there was no Shikhara on the top of the temple till Gupta period. However, later on, a shikhara was constructed and it enhanced the beauty of the temple.

Mahakal Lok Corridor

To develop tourism, preserve ancient heritage, and provide world-class modern facilities to the pilgrims, the 'Mahakal Lok' project has been implemented in Ujjain.

The length of the Mahakal Lok Corridor is more than 900 meters. It is surrounded by the old Rudrasagar Lake, which is also a part of the development project. Once you enter the corridor, you will see 108 pillars, around 200 statues, and murals that display stories of Shiva.

Kal Bhairav Temple

By crossing the bridge over the Shipra river, close to Bhagirathi caves, you'll reach the very famous Kal Bhairav temple. The devotion toward the ashta bhairava or eight attendants of Lord Shiva is an integral part of Shiva Bhakti (devotional worship) in Ujjain and since Kal Bhairav is chief among those eight, this temple is particularly important in the town.

The temple is believed to be built by King Bhadrasen of Mahismati, now Maheshwar. The significance of the temple is mentioned in the Hindu scriptures like Avanti Khanda of the Skanda Purana. The offering to the deity includes flowers, coconut, incense and especially liquor. One can purchase the offerings from the shops out of the temple premises and can hand it to the priest in the garbhagriha. The priest then offers half of the liquor to the idol of Kal Bhairava and returns the rest to the devotee as prashad.

Bada Ganapati Temple

The temple is located next to the campus of Mahakal Temple on the path leading to Harsiddhi Temple. It houses a gigantic 4 meters tall statue of Lord Ganesha. There is also a four-faced brass idol of Lord Vishnu in the inner chamber.

Harsiddhi Temple

Goddess Annapurna is seated between the idols of Mahalaxmi and Mahasaraswati in the temple. Being the significant deity worshiped in the temple, the goddess Annapurna is painted in vibrant vermilion. The pillars in the Ardhamandapa of the temple date back to the 11th century exhibiting their antiquity. The present temple was restored during the Maratha period and two soaring deepastambhas, each adorned with 1008 lamps, were made to stand outside the entrance. The glory of the lamps is best sighted during Navaratri festival which is celebrated with much zeal in Ujjain.

The sacred city of New Ujjain is home to Jantar Mantar or Vedh Shala. Maharaja Jai Singh II, also known as Sawai Jai Singh constructed an observatory in 1725 that included 13 architectural astronomical instruments. He constructed five observatories in the eighteenth century in the north Indian cities of Shahjahanabad (Delhi), Jaipur, Ujjain, Mathura, and Varanasi.  One of these five observatories, the Vedshala, was constructed while he served as the governor of Ujjain. Vedh Shala was built with the intention of determining eclipses, local time, height (of the location), as well as the declination of the Sun, stars, and planets.

Best time to visit Ujjain

Ujjain can be explored anytime in the year. However, the best time to visit Ujjain is during festivals like Mahashivratri, Mondays of Savan month, Nag Panchami and especially during Kartik Mela (yearly) and Kumbh Mela (once in 12 years).

How to reach Ujjain?

By Air: The closest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai International Airport, Indore at a distance of 55 km, which is well connected through regular flights to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Raipur, and Kolkata.

By Rail: The Ujjain railway station is located in the heart of the town. It is connected to all the major cities within the state as well as the rest of the country with both commuter and express trains. The main bus stand at Dewas Gate is located 600 meters from the railway station.

By Road: Both private and state-operated direct buses ply between Ujjain and Indore, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, Burhanpur, Dhar and Bhopal. There are two main bus stands in the city. The Dewas Gate bus stand is at the heart of the town from where one can easily hire other modes of transport as well, including auto-rickshaws, tempos and cycle rickshaws or cabs. The other bus stand, Nanakheda Bus Terminus is at a distance of approximately 5 kilometers.

A major attraction here is Mahakaleshwar jyotirlinga. It is one of the 12 jyotirlingams, where Bhasma Aarti a daily ritual that you must attend. In order to attend the aarti, make sure to follow the dress code if you wish to go inside the sanctum and participate in Abhishek.

Other attractions to name a few are Harsiddhi temple, Kal Bhairav temple, Shri Chintaman Ganesh. At Kal Bhairav temple you can witness a unique tradition. The temple is dedicated to Kal Bhairav and the devotees offer liquor to the deity as Prashad.
