In Berlin's Kit Kat Club, audiences — alongside the club's Emcee, performer Sally Bowles, writer Cliff Bradshaw, and more — can escape the world outside for someplace where "life is beautiful." But as the clubgoers' romances and careers collide with the rise of Nazism in Germany, they must choose whether to ignore it, face it — or join it.

The August Wilson Theatre completely transforms into the club for Cabaret on Broadway, with immersive design and pre-show entertainment in the lobby and the theatre. These elements set Frecknall's production apart in London, where it has run since 2021. Her Cabaret won seven Olivier Awards there, including Best Musical Revival, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Musical for Eddie Redmayne as the Emcee.

The Cabaret musical is already beloved, of course, having had three previous revivals since its Tony Award-winning Broadway premiere in 1966. The Oscar-winning 1972 film adaptation starring Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey further cemented Cabaret 's place in theatre history, and the show includes some of Kander and Ebb's most iconic songs, including "Mein Herr," "Cabaret," "Wilkommen," and "Maybe This Time."

Eddie Redmayne, Gayle Rankin to star in new Broadway ‘Cabaret’

The revival, directed by rebecca frecknall and co-starring gayle rankin, will transform the august wilson theatre into a decadent berlin club.

Eddie Redmayne had such a satisfying Broadway experience in “Red” — playing the assistant to artist Mark Rothko, for which he won a Tony in 2010 — that he wasn’t sure he’d ever find a role as fulfilling to entice him back. But now he has: Producers announced Monday that Redmayne will return to Times Square in the spring as the Emcee in a hit London-born revival of “Cabaret.”

“It’s just been a character that has swum around inside me for 25 years,” the 41-year-old Redmayne said in a Zoom interview, explaining that he first played the Emcee in high school. “My mum dug out a very embarrassing video the other day of my 15-year-old version, and I’m not sure a lot has changed, to be honest,” he added, laughing.

Redmayne — an Oscar winner, too, for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in 2014’s “The Theory of Everything” — anchors a revival of the 1966 musical by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Joe Masteroff that is now likely to become a centerpiece event of the 2023-2024 Broadway season. It also stars Gayle Rankin as Sally Bowles, the role made famous by Liza Minnelli in Bob Fosse’s 1972 film adaptation. Minnelli and Joel Grey, the original Emcee on Broadway, earned Oscars for their performances in the movie.

The latest production, under Rebecca Frecknall’s direction, begins performances April 1 at the August Wilson Theatre, which is being renovated, to designer Tom Scutt’s specifications, for conversion into the decadent Berlin club in which the musical is set. (Tickets go on sale to the general public on Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. Eastern at kitkat.club .)

The musical’s title has undergone a renovation, as well: It’s now being called “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” a moniker born in the 2021 London incarnation that also starred Redmayne and that won him an Olivier Award.

“His performance is quite extraordinary,” Frecknall said. “He’s such a shapeshifter in the show, such an incredible mover. There’s a kind of real, grotesque clown to it. It’s not like other versions of the Emcee that I’ve seen.”

“Cabaret,” based on the play “I Am a Camera,” by John Van Druten, has been staged in celebrated Broadway revivals before, most notably in the 1998 version starring Alan Cumming and the late Natasha Richardson. Cumming reprised the role of Emcee opposite Michelle Williams in 2014 at Studio 54 — a production in which the Scottish-born, Juilliard-trained Rankin played Fraulein Kost, the lady of the evening in Sally’s boardinghouse.

“She kind of holds her own mystery,” said Rankin of Sally. Her predecessors in the role include Jessie Buckley, who portrayed Sally opposite Redmayne in London. “Everyone thinks they understand Sally Bowles, and, the thing is, nobody does. A few people have already asked, ‘What’s your take?’ And I’m like, ‘You don’t get to know that!’”

Redmayne’s influence in the industry is such that it was the actor who recruited the director for “Cabaret,” not the other way around. “By the time they came to me, Eddie had already gone to Jessie,” Frecknall said. “So I met him and he sort of proposed the idea, and I said, ‘I’d kill to do “Cabaret.” It’s one of my favorite musicals.’”

When Redmayne says he has been in a long-term artistic relationship with the Emcee — who presides over nights at the Kit Kat Club, where many of the numbers are metaphors for the rise of Nazism — he’s not being facetious. At 19, he played the Emcee again in a major annual play festival in Edinburgh. Like Rankin, he views the role as one of infinite possibility.

“There is something about this part that is so amorphous and intangible and impossible to pin down,” he said from the United Kingdom, where he was taking a short break in filming a TV adaptation in Croatia and Hungary of the Frederick Forsyth thriller “The Day of the Jackal.” In movies, he has not had to rely on his singing skills, although he knows how to sing, having been a choral scholar at Cambridge.

“Certainly the training for doing a London run, and now trying to balance playing an assassin with getting my voice and physicality up to scratch for six months on Broadway — it’s a huge undertaking, but such an exciting one,” he said.

Asked, though, whether his mum’s video of him as a teenage Emcee might be revealed to the world, Redmayne replied, laughing: “I don’t think anybody needs to see it.”

Florencia Cuenca, BROADWAY EN SPANGLISH, Joe's Pub: Florencia Cuenca is not a stranger to the nightclub stage. She has played solo shows in rooms like The Metropolitan Room, and done group shows with Jaime Lozano & The Familia. Roe Hartrampf at 54 Below: Charming as Charles in Diana The Musical, Roe Hartrampf took a turn around the nightclub stage in his solo show debut at 54 Below this season and it was a match made in heaven. The cabaret stage and Roe were made for each other, and if he will put together a new show in this next year, there will be momentum to be rode because this is one prince to watch. Jessica Hendy, THE BEST OF BROADWAY! A CCM CELEBRATION, 54 Below: Jessica Hendy has been around - she is not a new face, nor is she a new talent... Or is she? This Broadway, touring, cabaret-ing rock star is always a stand out in every, in any, show she does. But when she appeared in the Scott Coulter-helmed CCM Celebration, Jessica and Brianna Barnes sang an original song from their new musical WALKING WITH BUBBLES, and Jessica Hendy became a new face, once again. Her female-empowered club act was all about the strong and artistic women that inspire her, and it was almost a year ago, and there won't be another show, soon, because Mariah is headed to Broadway in BAD CINDERELLA. Macon Prickett, 54 DOES 54: THE 54 BELOW STAFF SHOW, 54 Below: This Front-of-Houser at Broadway's Living Room has been wowing audiences with his performances of songs once sung by the likes of Patti LuPone and Barbra Streisand. It is clear that the belting actor needs to put together a solo show, soon. Watch for it. Sam Primack, 54 CELEBRATES HANUKKAH, 54 Below: This bold-voiced, angel-faced Broadway belter ate the stage, the room, and everything in it when he performed Danny Feldman's original Hanukkah song at 54 Below, just last month, leaving this writer asking, "WHO is THAT?!" I and everyone else will have a chance to learn more, as it turns out Sam Primack will make his solo show debut in a matter of days, on January 15th, at Rockwood Music Hall ( intel and reservations HERE ). Sally Shaw, BOTH SIDES NOW, The Green Room 42: The winner of an online singing competition hosted by Playbill, Sally Shaw debuted her first-ever Manhattan solo show and it was one to remember. Sean Stephens, REDEMPTION OF A 90'S KID, 54 Below: Charming with a playful, youthful exuberance, and a soulful, heartfelt side, singing actor and cabaret ensemble soloist Sean Stephens played Broadway's Living Room with a romp of a show that let him come out as a solo artist in the way most authentic to himself. Elvira Tortora, HOT HOT HOT A SUMMER CONCERT, Don't Tell Mama: In a showcase of the students of Lina Koutrakos, a group of talented artists who should all be doing solo shows each season, Elvira Tortora stood out as a singing actress with whom people should be clamoring to work, that clubs should be seeking to book. Emily Walton, I REALLY HOPE YOU ALL THINK THIS IS FUNNY, The Green Room 42: The star of Broadway's Come From Away is a singer-songwriter with a unique sound and a fabulously funny aesthetic. Her humorous songs are comedy in a bag, but there's also a serious side to her, which comes out in social consciousness, protest songs, and love of family. Brandon Webster, NEW WRITERS AT 54! With some gorgeous, gifted friends and his own considerable performing skills, Brandon presented just under an hour of some impressive compositions, and we could do with some more of his particular artistic voice, soon, rather than later.
