Pikes Peak Cog Railway (8:33)

Please note.

The Cog Railway sells out a couple of weeks in advance during the busy months so be sure to book your ride early. Enjoy extensive renovations, updated trains, and a visit to the new Summit Visitor Center on Pikes Peak.

What you can do

  • Learn the history of Pikes Peak
  • Enjoy the ride

Get into the details

After completing an expansive restoration project in 2021, The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway is back on track to usher in a new era of adventure on Pikes Peak-America’s Mountain. A renovated depot, new trains and miles of new tracks are poised to take Colorado adventurers on an age-old journey that has delighted visitors to the Pikes Peak region for over 130 years.

The excursion begins at the newly renovated Cog Railway Depot in the foothills of historic Manitou Springs. The gift shop is packed with fantastic gifts and fun Cog memorabilia to commemorate your experience. You can also pick up tasty snacks to enjoy as you ride — everything from local Colorado snacks and trail mix to ice cream.

From there, you’ll board the train and embark on a 9-mile journey to Pikes Peak’s 14,115-foot summit. Along the way, you’ll travel through Englemann Canyon, the Pike National Forest, and Inspiration Point and be treated to stories about the region’s history.

It goes without saying that the views along the Cog Railway route are exceptional — and we don’t just mean the panoramic views beyond the mountain. Cog riders are treated to glimpses of the Pikes Peak region that is typically only traveled by experienced backcountry hikers, including unique rock formations, high-elevation flora and fauna, pristine landscapes and historical landmarks. The train travels through multiple life zones, and you’ll have ample opportunities to view the unique attributes of each one. Your camera will need a long nap from all the overtime it will put into capturing the journey.

At the top of Pikes Peak, you and your fellow travelers will be given 40 minutes to explore the summit and take in the stunning sights. On a clear day, you can see five states from the summit: Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Kansas. The brand-new Summit Visitor Center experience offers multiple points to take in the views, complete with interesting facts about the region.

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway isn’t just a round-trip experience, either. Visitors can also use the Cog Railway for a one-way trip up or down the mountain. Hike to the top of Pikes Peak on the 13-mile Barr Trail route and book a ride on the Cog for your return trip — your weary legs will thank you. Alternatively, take a one way ride up to the summit and then bike down the Pikes Peak Highway for 19 miles of twisting, turning, and downhill fun.

Pikes Peak Cog Rail Slated to Re-Open in 2021

$100 million to be invested on new engines, cars and rails.

The owners of the Pikes Peak Cog Railway announced in January 2019 that they would be re-opening the famous and iconic tourist attraction in 2021.

The Broadmoor Hotel, owner of the Pikes Peak Cog Rail, had closed the popular tourist attraction in 2018, citing aging equipment and infrastructure.  It was unclear if the Cog Rail would ever clink and clank its way to the summit again. Ironically, upgrade/maintenance costs were believed to be “too steep.”

Please refer to the  Cog Rail Website  for further information.

There are typically three ways to reach the summit of Pikes Peak: The Pikes Peak Highway, the Barr Trail and the Pikes Peak Cog Rail. If your style is more passive, the Cog Rail is the option for you! All you have to do is sit back and let someone else do all the work while you ride the world’s highest cog train and the highest train in America!

What is a Cog Train  |  The Trip To the Summit of Pikes Peak |  History |  Getting to the Depot

What is a Cog Train?

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway uses a unique cog and gear system to power itself up the steep slopes. The two outer rails on most train tracks are used to transfer power from the locomotive’s engine to the wheels and subsequently to the rails. However, due to the steep incline on this track, normal train wheels would just spin on the rails. So, the Cog Train uses a toothed double rail in the center of the track, which enables the train to “grab” onto something on the way up the mountain. This cog and gear system also keeps the train from running away on the way down. The two outer rails on the Cog Rail are used only to keep the train stable and pointed correctly.

The Trip to the Summit of Pikes Peak (when the train is operating)

The round trip to the summit of Pikes Peak (8.9 miles in length) takes a little over three hours. That includes 30 to 40 minutes at the summit for eating, shopping or simply looking out at the expansive views.

The train’s conductors provide an excellent commentary along the way, including sights to see, strangely shaped and named rocks, flora and fauna and a good amount of history, too. So, we’ll let them provide most of the details.

The train departs Manitou Springs (elevation 6,570 ft) and follows Ruxton Creek up through Englemann Canyon. Just after reaching Mike Marker 1, you’ll ride into Artist Glen and then into Minnehaha (elevation 8,332 ft.).

Most of the railway to the summit is a single lane. So during the busier summer months, the engineers use the switch at Minnehaha to allow the downhill train to safely pass the uphill train. You’ll also be able to use this short stop to check out Minnehaha Falls.

At Mile Marker 2, the train will successfully take on Son-of-a-Gun Hill and then proceed to the site of the former Halfway House.

Just before Mile 3, you’ll proceed through Hell Gate and past Ruxton Park. To your left will be Pilot’s Knob Mountain as you continue up the rails. At Mile 4 (elevation 9,500 feet), you’ll pass another “passing lane” on the Cog Rails and get your first view of Pikes Peak in the distance. When you reach Mile Marker 5, you’ll really start to feel the cog rail engaging at the steepness of the incline increases. You’ll also get to enjoy the terrific views to the south as tree line fades below.

In the next couple of miles, you’ll pass Grecian Bend and  Inspiration Point, and will then soon approach another rail switch at Windy Point (elevation 12,130 feet). On your right, you’ll see a small stone structure that was used by workers during construction and maintenance trips. On your left, you’ll see the former pump house that was used to supply water to the former steam engines.

Reaching Windy Point on the Pikes Peak Cog Rail

Keep your eyes focused on the hillsides as many Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep frequent this area. Also, keep an eye out for the Yellow-bellied Marmot. Enjoy the views above treeline for the last three miles of the rail as you pass The Saddle, Slide’s Cut and Ghost Corner. At approximately 13,600 feet in elevation, just below the summit, you’ll pass one of the last switchbacks on the Pikes Peak Highway. Then, you’ll come up one last rise and reach the Summit of Pikes Peak.

Most train riders seem to want to immediately head into the Summit House on their arrival. Don’t worry, there are plenty of donuts and merchandise items for everyone. So, take a leisurely stroll on the top of Pikes Peak and take in the views instead.

Remember, you only get 30-40 minutes at the summit. The Cog Rail conductors will sound warning horns and the staff in the Summit House will remind you via their PA system. But….if you miss your train, it is a long and steep 8.9-mile walk down. There is no shuttle service back down to the Cog Railway Depot.

History of the Pikes Peak Cog Rail

"I Helped Build the Cog Rail" - Photo by John Potter, Courtesy of Special Collections, Pikes Peak Library)

“I Helped Build the Cog Rail” – Photo by John Potter, Courtesy of Special Collections, Pikes Peak Library)

The Manitou and Pike’s Peak Railway was the brainchild of Major John Hulbert and several well-to-do men of that era. Over a span of almost three years, from 1888 to 1891, engineers and laborers surveyed, planned, blasted, and hauled rocks and fill dirt to complete the line all the way up to the summit from the Ruxton Valley in Manitou Springs.

Grading the railway route involved blasting hillsides made of solid granite, and then moving the debris with burros, picks, and shovels. Workers would come and go from five different camps on the mountain. In fact, it was said that there were always three gangs of workers on the mountain – one going up the mountain, one coming down the mountain and one working on the mountain.

The actual laying of the track rails on the Cog Road began on June 11, 1890, and was completed four months later on October 20th. However, it wasn’t until June 30, 1891, that the first train completed the trip to the top of Pikes Peak. That’s when the Locomotive John Hulbert and the coach car named Denver delivered their passengers to the Signal Station (soon to be Summit House).

Ultimate Guide to Riding the Cog Railway at Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs

Front Range » Colorado Springs » Ultimate Guide to Riding the Cog Railway at Pikes Peak

I bet you love to hike. I mean, that’s the point of this blog, right? But sometimes, it’s nice to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery without added effort. That’s where the Cog Railway at Pikes Peak comes in.

You can make the 25-mile hike up Pikes Peak (you 100% get bragging rights if you do this). You can drive up Pikes Peak (keeping your eyes on the road, not the scenery). Or, you can ride a newly renovated train to the top.

Its official name is the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. I’ll call it the Pikes Peak Cog Railway for short. This post will cover everything you need to know about riding it.

We’ll go over the following:

  • Frequently asked questions
  • What you need to do before going
  • How to get there/what the parking situation is like
  • What the experience of riding the train is like
  • Things to do at the top of Pikes Peak
  • Fun things to do after the ride

Cog Railway at Pikes Peak FAQ

Where is the Pikes Peak Cog Railway?

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway is in downtown Manitou Springs. It’s a 20-minute drive from downtown Colorado Springs.

How long is the drive from Denver to the Pikes Peak Cog railway?

It takes approximately 1.5 hours to get to the Pikes Peak Cog Railway from Denver. This can vary depending on traffic and where you’re at in Denver. Use Google maps to get a more accurate estimate depending on where you’re driving from.

How long is the Cog Railway at Pikes Peak ride?

The train ride to Pikes Peak takes around three hours round trip. It’s approximately an hour up and an hour down. You’ll get 40 minutes to an hour to explore the peak.

What is the weather like at Pikes Peak?

A good rule of thumb is to expect Pikes Peak to be around 30 degrees colder than the train station in Manitou Springs. The higher you travel in elevation, the colder it will get. Pikes Peak is known to get VERY windy. I highly recommend wearing a warm, wind-resistant jacket.

During the winter, the temperature on Pikes Peak can go well into the negatives and get very snowy. It can get up to around 50 degrees and sunny during the summer. For the most up-to-date information about the upcoming weather at Pikes Peak,  visit this National Weather Service website page.

How tall is Pikes Peak Summit?

The Pikes Peak Summit is 14,115 feet. It’s not the tallest mountain, but it’s pretty close! The tallest mountain in Colorado is Mount Elbert, with a peak of 14,438 ft. Colorado has 58 mountain Peaks above 14,000 feet, with 54 lovingly known as “14ers”. To qualify as a 14er, the saddle between the peaks must be at least 300 feet lower than two adjacent peaks.

Can you drive to Pikes Peak?

Yes! Pikes Peak is one of the two Colorado 14ers you can drive to the peak. The other is Mount Evans, which may soon be renamed Mount Blue Sky. The drive can be scary to some – it’s steep with tall, unguarded drop-offs. Riding the train is an excellent alternative so the driver can enjoy the views without the added anxiety.

Wasn’t the Cog Railway at Pikes Peak closed?

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway was temporarily closed for a 100 million-dollar renovation project. It reopened as the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway in Spring 2021, on their 130th anniversary. The renovation project included new tracks along the railway, new and refurbished train cars, and a beautifully updated train station.

When is the best time to ride the Cog Railway?

The best time of the year to ride the Cog Railway depends on your personal preferences! It’s open year-round, even during heavy snow. In the summer, you’ll see abundant wildflowers and have a warmer experience at the peak. By “warm,” I mean possible 40-50 degree weather and sunshine. From September to October, you’ll see golden Aspens, among other fall foliage. During late Fall to mid-Spring, you may see fluffy blankets of white snow. Note that temperatures could get into the negatives during this time. The best time to see wildlife is from late Spring to early Fall.

What to Do Before You Go

Buy tickets online.

Before riding the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railroad, you must buy your tickets online. Tickets can sell out weeks in advance so try to get yours as early as possible.

As of November 2022, Cog Railway tickets start at $58.50 for most people. Children and large groups of 25 or more get a $10 discount. I recommend getting the Reserved Admission ticket for $68.50, so you can pick your seats and ensure your group gets to sit together.

When I rode it, a family didn’t get the Reserved Seating ticket. They were all split up, and the small child who had to sit alone in our area looked very uncomfortable despite efforts to help him feel welcome. The extra $10 to be able to sit with your friends and/or family and choose the seats you’d like is well worth the price.

You can view a complete list of their current rates and ticket information  here.

Choose Your Seats

You can choose your seats online with a Reserved Seating Ticket. Getting a prime seat will make your experience sooo much better. IMO, the best spot is right next to the engineer. Yes, it will cost more. BUT you will get unobstructed views from the front of the train.

If you don’t get the engineers’ view seats, you’ll need to choose between the three or two-seat sides of the train. Keep in mind the train does not turn around at the top. You’ll have the same views going up as you will coming down. This means that whichever side you choose will impact your experience.

I prefer sitting by the window on the three-seat side. It sits further away from the mountain, but you’ll get the best views of the Continental Divide, Mount Baldy, the Black Forest, and the surrounding lakes. You’ll also see two waterfalls up close early on the ride. One of those is pictured here.

The two-seat side hugs the side of the mountain as you go up. You’re more likely to get better views of Big Horn Sheep and Yellow-Bellied Marmots on this side. You’re also likely to be seated next to a stranger if you’re in a group of two. Seating is tight on the train anyways, so expect to share the experience closely with others. You might meet some new friends on the ride too!

Getting to the Cog Railway Depot

Cog Railway at Pikes Peak Train Station

Where is the Pikes Peak Cog Railway Depot?

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway Depot is in downtown Manitou Springs. It’s a cute and historic town at the base of Pikes Peak. It’s definitely worth a visit before or after riding the train.

The parking lot is right next to the Manitou incline. It’s about a 20-minute drive from downtown Colorado Springs and an hour and a half from downtown Denver.

How early should I get there?

Aim to get to the Cog Railway Depot about 30 minutes before departure. This will give you time to park and get situated. There aren’t any bathrooms on the train, so I recommend using the one at the depot before departure. Outside food and drinks aren’t allowed on the train either, so finish up whatever you have before getting on. You can check out the gift shop or take photos around the depot if you have extra time. It is so cute and aesthetically pleasing, with the red train and bright blue accents throughout the recently renovated depot.

What is the Cog Railway parking like?

All of the parking near the Cog Railway are paid lots. As of November 2022, parking is $10. There is a lot right across the street from the Cog Railway Depot and at the base of the Manitou Incline trail.

Parking can fill up fast. It’s best to get there early and plan ahead. There is additional parking available at Hiawatha Gardens in Manitou Springs. It’s about a mile from the depot, but a shuttle is available. This is one more reason why it’s essential to get there early.

Views from the Cog Railway at Pikes Peak

Riding the Cog Railway

Now the real fun begins. When it’s time, you and your group will board a brand-new or recently refurbished train. Keep your eyes open and expect beautiful sights the entire way. On the way up, the conductor will point out significant landmarks and features, such as waterfalls and cabin ruins. They’ll tell you about the history of the railway, the surrounding area, and even the operations in progress today.

The train begins at the base of Pikes Peak and winds through Pike National Forest along Ruxton Creek in Englemann Canyon. Some of the Bristlecone Pinetree’s in this area are estimated to be over 2,000 years old. This makes them the oldest living thing in the area. Early on, you’ll pass by a series of waterfalls. The conductor will inform you when you’re getting close and will tell you where to look to see them.

Before passing the treeline, you’ll pass through Deer Park. You’ll have a high chance of seeing wildlife here, particularly elk and deer. You’re most likely to see wildlife in the late Spring, summer, and early Fall.

Once you’re above the treeline, you’ll get breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges, front range, foothills, and Pikes Peak. You’ll pass by Mount Baldy, the Black Forest, Morraine Lake, and more. The continental divide lingers in the background the entire time. From Spring through Fall, you have a great chance of seeing Yellow-Bellied Marmots and BigHorn Sheep in this area.

Things to do at the Pikes Peak Summit

You’ll get about 40 minutes to an hour to explore the summit when you get to the top. That may sound like a long time to some, but it goes by FAST.

Views from the Cog Railway at Pikes Peak

Take in the sights and take LOTS of Photos.

The one thing you absolutely HAVE to do is to take in the sights. The views from Pikes Peak are absolutely breathtaking. You’ll get 360-degree views of Colorado and the surrounding mountain ranges. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Kansas.

Obviously, you’ll want to take LOTS of photos! Make sure to get some of yourself and your friends and/or family too. Those are memories you will for sure happily look back on later on.

Visit the Pikes Peak Visitors Center

You can warm up, grab a snack, and use the restroom at the Pikes Peak Visitors Center. It’s newly renovated and features a cafe, gift shop, and museum.

cog railway round trip time

Eat a famous Pikes Peak donut.

I strongly recommend grabbing a hot, fresh donut from the Pikes Peak Summit House in the Visitors Center. They are soooo good and a Colorado tradition when visiting Pikes peak.

My fiancé and I tried the Cinnamon Sugar donut, and let me tell you… it was one of the most delicious donuts I’ve ever had. Simple, but delicious. They also have other rotating flavors.

Grab a snack at the Pikes Peak Summit House

If you’re still feeling snackish, grab something else at the Pikes Peak Summit House. They offer light snacks to hot meals. However, I recommend spending most of your time exploring.

The Train Ride Down

On the train ride down, you’ll pass through the same places as before. Instead of the conductor telling stories and pointing out landmarks to everyone on the train, they will go around to take to people one-on-one and in small groups. This is the perfect time to ask any follow-up questions about anything you may be interested in about the area.

Other things to do near Pikes Peak

There is so much to do near Pikes Peak! You will have plenty of options for activities before or after your train ride. If you haven’t been to Garden of the Gods, you have to drive or hike through there before you leave. Walk, eat, or shop in downtown Manitou Springs, Colorado Springs, or Old Colorado City. If you’re up to a challenging workout, the Manitou incline is right next to the Cog Railway Depot. There are PLENTY of hikes and places to sightsee in the area.

If you’d like me to create a post about other things to do near Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs, and/or Colorado Springs, please let me know in the comments!

Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Take a ride on The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the highest cog railway in the world, and enjoy an unforgettable experience.

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway has been climbing Pikes Peak since 1891, offering visitors incredible views of America's Mountain. The railway recently resumed service following a $100 million renovation, with 9 miles of newly constructed track and refurbished Swiss cog rail cars. During the ascent, riders can catch a glimpse of the beautiful reservoirs nestled among the peaks of the Front Range.

You'll begin your 3 hour round trip journey at the recently updated Manitou Depot , home to parking , a gift shop, restrooms and dining options. If you're looking for a slightly more challenging trek to the top of Pikes Peak, the Depot is also an excellent starting point for area hikes and bike rides.

Once aboard the train, your 1 hour 10 minute journey to the summit of Pikes Peak will pass by many Bristlecone pine trees, some of the oldest living things on Earth — estimated at over 2,000 years old. The route will take you through Pike National Forest , along Ruxton Creek, by Diamond Rock, within the steep, rocky walls of Englemann Canyon, past stacked boulder formations, a striking waterfall and through Deer Park. Eventually, views get expansive as you move above the timberline. Wildlife like elk, deer, bighorn sheep and yellow-bellied marmots can be spotted.

Upon reaching the summit of America's Mountain, you'll have 40 minutes to explore the newly opened Summit Visitor Center , enjoy a donut among the clouds, and enjoy panoramic views of Colorado. From there, it's another 1 hour 10 minute journey back to the Depot, giving you one more chance to absorb the beauty that surrounds the railway.

A Brief History of the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway holds a unique distinction as the highest cog railway in the world. Wonder how this legendary Pikes Peak train came to take visitors to the top of America’s Mountain? One of the tourists who visited the Pikes Peak region in the late 1880s was Zalmon Simmons, inventor and founder of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company. Mr. Simmons rode to the summit of Pikes Peak on a mule. The arduous, two-day trip was the only way to reach the top in those days. Mr. Simmons was awed by the scenery but determined that the views should be experienced in a more civilized and comfortable manner. Thus, the railway was born.

In 1889, The Broadmoor Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway Company was founded and track construction began. Top wages were 25 cents per hour. This was no easy feat as six workers died in blasting and construction accidents. On the afternoon of June 30th, 1891, the first passenger Pikes Peak train, carrying a church choir from Denver, made it to the summit for the first time. Spencer Penrose, the owner of The Broadmoor Hotel , acquired the Railway in 1925.

Enhancements to the rail cars arrived in the late 1930s, at first with gasoline and diesel-powered cars, followed shortly by what is believed to have been the world's inaugural rack rail car, and, in 1938, the arrival of the world’s first diesel-electric cog locomotive. In the 1970s and 1980s, led by Swiss engineer Martin Frick, the railway began to introduce more modern cars capable of transporting upwards of 200 people at a time to the summit of Pikes Peak.

Several decades later, in the spring of 2018, the Cog Railway made the decision to cease operations due to aging equipment and infrastructure concerns. Fast forward to 2021, where an expansive renovation and revitalization effort brought the Cog Railway back online with an assortment of modern updates including a refreshed depot, three new Swiss trains, a new single rail cog system, and a brand new Visitor Center at the top of Pikes Peak.

5 Things To Know About Traveling To The Top Of Pikes Peak In 2021

May 19, 2021 / 2:09 PM MDT / CBS Colorado

(CBS4) - Planning to travel to the top of Colorado's most famous 14er this year? Look no further if you're looking for tips on going to the 14,115-foot Pikes Peak summit.

2018 Air Force Academy Graduation

Let's start with the key factor, getting to the top of Pikes Peak. You can drive, hike or take the refurbished Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway .

An image from the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2013.

1. Driving To The Summit Let's start with the drive. No question about it, it's a tough drive and best avoided in the dark or when it is wet. It's almost 12 and a half miles long more than 156 turns. It climbs more than 4,700 feet from the start Mile 7 with grades averaging 7%. The staff on the mountain keeps a very close eye on the weather and makes the decision on when the road should be closed or when to send people down from the top. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to make just the round trip drive, that does include time for pictures, shopping or snacking. There are no gas stations along the highway so make sure to have at least half a tank before you start and to stop to have your brakes checked on the way down.

2. The Cog Railway Ready to leave the driving to someone else? Book a seat on the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway . An extensive restoration project means new trains head out of renovated depot onto new tracks to make the 9-mile trip to the top. It's a 3 hour round trip.

It has an average grade of 12% but sometimes gets as steep as 24%. It's a great way to enjoy the scenery of the Pike National Forest. The newly improved rail line also includes a new snowblower which can cut through snow drifts up to 14 feet tall so the trains can make it to the summit.

3. Hike To The Top Think you have what it takes to hike to the top of Pikes Peak? Barr Trail is the most common hike, it's a 13 mile one-way hike with 7,800 feet of elevation. The first piece of advice from a local hiking expert is simple: don't do it in the winter. At pikes-peak.com , he describes it as a hike you train for, not one you just decide to do. Timing is an issue for a winter hike, it takes 6 to 8 hours to hike, in good weather with a clear trail. Once you get to the top, you can get a ride down on the Cog Railway or arrange to get a ride down. You can camp on Pikes Peak at Barr Camp but you need a reservation. Otherwise it's a great place to stop for a rest.

pikes peak summit complex construction (city communications)

4. Visit The Summit Complex The new Pikes Peak Summit Complex opened June 24. Crews broke ground on the Pikes Peak Summit Complex in 2018 to build an ambitious new version of a Summit House. It includes upgrades to the exterior facilities to make it easier for visitors of all ages and abilities to explore the peak. Inside, you'll find new interactive features sharing the history of Pikes Peak. This is the latest in a string of structures dating back to a weather station built of stones. The U.S. Army opened a formal station in 1873 but was abandoned in the late 1880s. Eventually the Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway used the building as a station, even expanding it to add hotel rooms. It burned in the 1950s. The summit house that was just demolished was built in 1963.

5. Donuts At The Top And yes, most importantly, you can still get those famous "Top of the Peak" donuts. In fact, the new donut machine is so large, it was put in the kitchen area first, then construction crews built around it. The new machine is also reported to be more environmentally-friendly, matching the whole higher efficiency theme of the build. At 14,115 feet, Pikes Peak is the highest peak on the Front Range and thrillist.com says these are the only donuts produced at an altitude above 14,000 feet, that means a top secret recipe for really high altitude baking. And while the frying machine may be new, that old recipe made its way to the new building.

Pikes Peak Cog Railway Manitou Springs Colorado

Pikes Peak Cog Railway – Manitou Springs

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway departs year-round from Manitou Springs. It passes through a variety of beautiful alpine landscapes before making it to the 14,115-foot summit. Visitors will spend 30 minutes at the top of Pikes Peak before returning to the depot where they can browse souvenirs or head into town to explore.

The Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center has a gift store, cafeteria, and restroom facilities, as well as plenty of interpretive displays and exhibits for learning the mountain’s history. The smell of the “World Famous” donuts is hard to resist, be sure to grab a few and see for yourself why they’re so popular.

Year-round train rides up Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak Colorado Front Range Aerial View

As the highest peak on the Front Range, Pikes Peak is a staple part of any trip to Colorado. Although there are several ways to reach the summit, the Pikes Peak Cog Railway is one of the most unique. Chug along the 9 miles of railroad tracks that wind through Engelmann Canyon, past a gorgeous waterfall, and above the treeline to reach the 14,115-foot summit.

The train cars are brand new and were shipped over from Switzerland in 2019 as part of a multi-million dollar renovation. Inside each car, there are rows of 2 and 3 seats facing one another that are ideal for families to sit together. The interiors are kept at a constant temperature of 73°F no matter the season with new heaters and air conditioning units.

Inside of a railcar

Either side of the train offers spectacular vistas and on a clear day, you can see all the way to Kansas! If you want unobstructed sightseeing during the ride, they offer a special “Engineer’s View” ticket for both uphill and downhill rides. Enjoy this front-row experience while you sit right up with the train engineer.

Each ride departs from the cog depot in eclectic Manitou Springs . The trip is 8.9 miles to the top and takes one hour and 40 minutes each way, for a roundtrip total of just over 3 hours (plus however long you want to stay at the top). Another way to reach the top is by automobile on the Pikes Peak Highway , by a long hike, or you can even go by bike. If you choose the latter two, the railway offers single-way tickets to get back down.

Historic railroad engine on display

It all started with a mule ride and the founder of Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company. Zalmon Simmons took the two-day mule trek to the summit of Pikes Peak to check up on an insulated telegraph wire he created. He realized the views were beautiful and wanted to make them more accessible to the public.

The Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway Company was founded and construction on the tracks began in 1889. 6 steam-powered locomotives were used in the early days, and 3 of them are now proudly displayed around Colorado Springs. Only 2 years after construction began, a church choir group boarded the railcars and became the first guests to summit Pikes Peak via the passenger train.

The Broadmoor acquired the railway in 1925. Over the next few decades, many of the cars were shifted from steam power to diesel to make summiting more efficient. Swiss engineers played a huge role in planning and producing larger and faster cars throughout the 20th century, contributing to the smooth summiting experience that’s still around today.

Gift shop wall of snacks

You’ll never be far from delicious snacks during the 3-hour roundtrip to the summit. Grab some locally roasted nuts, ice cream, frozen fruit bars, or trail mixes at the Manitou Depot before boarding the train. Unfortunately, outside food and beverage are not allowed aboard the train.

Once you reach the summit, you can’t miss the World Famous Summit Donuts, a cross between a cake and yeast doughnut that has been loved for years. There are also a variety of salads with locally sourced greens and toppings, sandwiches, soups, and burgers. A grab-n-go station has similar snacks to the depot as well if you’re just looking for a light bite.

Two grey t-shirts on display

Although there is a large summit gift shop on Pikes Peak for all of your high-altitude souvenirs, you’ll find memorabilia for the cog railway down at the Manitou Depot. Grab a t-shirt for yourself or as a gift to a friend, or browse their other logoed mugs and magnets. It can be really chilly at the top of the mountain even on a summer’s day, so if you forgot a sweatshirt, gloves, or a hat, the store also has plenty of those.

Nearby Activities

Historic Manitou Springs arch

The train depot is located right off the main street of downtown Manitou Springs, a colorful mountain town with plenty to eat, see, and explore. If you’re feeling inspired by nature after your ride and want to take a hike, there are a few local trails to check out, most notably the Incline . Manitou is also known for its natural mineral water that’s free for all, so bring a water bottle and fill it up at one of the many fountains around town .

Getting There

Outside of railroad depot building

From Denver, take 1-25 for about 70 miles south to Exit 141 towards Cimmaron Street on US-24. Continue on US-24 for 5 miles before making a left-hand turn onto Serpentine Drive, which quickly becomes Manitou Avenue. Take the first exit at the first roundabout onto Ruxton Avenue, and the cog railway depot will be on your left.

There is no free parking at the depot or along the surrounding roads, you must pay $5 to park in the Cog Railway’s lot or find metered parking. If you do not want to pay for parking, there is a free shuttle that runs from the Hiawatha Gardens lot to the depot every 20 minutes. Look for the free shuttle signs near the lot and board a bus on Route 33.

The world's highest cog railroad reopens in the Rocky Mountains

cog railway round trip time

It's the world’s highest and longest cog railroad © The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Visitors to Colorado can once again take a scenic train journey up Pikes Peak, after a famous cog railway service reopened after a three-year renovation period.

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway began operating in June 1891. It is the world’s highest and longest cog railroad at 14,115 feet, and is the highest railroad in the US and Northern Hemisphere. The new upgrades include the addition of new trains, tracks and a depot, and the establishment of the Pikes Peak Visitor Center, which has an elevated pathway and overlook. The new visitor centre is opening in June.

Cog Railway 2.JPG

The train's trip to the top of Pikes Peak begins and ends at the Manitou Depot, and takes one hour and ten minutes to reach the summit. After 40 minutes spent on top to take in the views, it's back to the depot, making it a round trip of approximately three hours. The views are what draw in eager visitors, as the Collegiate and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges are visible from the top, as is the Continental Divide, and Denver can even be seen on a clear day.

Along the way, guests get to learn about the history and geology of the mountains, and hear the stories of historical points and significant people who shaped the region. The train enters Pike National Forest and travels within the steep, rocky walls of Englemann Canyon, traveling past stacked boulder formations, a striking waterfall and through Deer Park.

You Can Now Take a Sunrise Train Ride to the Top of Pikes Peak

See the panoramic vistas from atop the 14,000-foot mountain that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful”

Sarah Kuta

Daily Correspondent

Red train car going up a mountain

In the summer of 1893,  Katharine Lee Bates reached the top of Pikes Peak. The American educator and author had been teaching English at a summer school in nearby Colorado Springs when she decided to join her fellow teachers on a wagon and mule trek up the 14,000-foot mountain.

Though she only spent  30 minutes at the summit, Bates felt deeply inspired by the stunning landscapes she saw around her. When she returned to her hotel, she wrote a poem that would later become “ America the Beautiful .”

Pikes Peak—nicknamed “America’s Mountain”—has long lured travelers like Bates to its perch above the clouds. And now, for the first time ever, visitors can take a train ride to the top of the majestic mountain at sunrise.

The historic  Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway —which celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2021—will chug out of the station at 4:30 a.m. on July 21 for its inaugural sunrise trip. As the train makes its way along a nine-mile stretch of track, riders will get to watch the sun emerge from below the horizon while looking out over Colorado’s Eastern Plains. They’ll be rolling along the highest railway of any kind in the United State—and the highest cog railroad in the world.

A portion of the proceeds from the three-hour ride will benefit the local Manitou Springs Carnegie Library , which is in the middle of a renovation project that will make the 1910 building more accessible to visitors with mobility challenges, reports O’Dell Isaac for the  Colorado Springs Gazette . So far, this ride is the only sunrise train trip on the schedule, though the railway’s leaders are considering adding more in the future, per  KKTV ’s Tony Keith.

Travelers who can’t make that date—or the early wake-up call—work with their schedules can still visit the mountain, which is open year-round (barring bad weather). They can reach the top by riding the train, driving, hiking or biking.

At the summit, travelers will find panoramic vistas waiting for them—similar to what Bates saw more than a century ago. From Pikes Peak, she likely looked east and envisioned the “amber waves of grain” growing in Kansas, according to the  National Park Service . When she turned her gaze to the west, she saw the “purple mountain majesties” of the Rocky Mountains. And though she probably couldn’t see all the way to Chicago from her perch, Bates may have imagined that she could: She wrote the line “thine alabaster cities gleam” while remembering her experience at the World’s Columbian Exposition in the Windy City earlier that year.

YouTube Logo

After taking in the views, travelers can get out of the wind and warm up inside the new summit visitor center that opened in 2021 . There, they can snack on donuts made from a recipe that’s so top-secret that the employees have to sign a confidentiality agreement . The center also has indoor and outdoor exhibits covering everything from geography and climate to the region’s history.

The historic railway, which was built in 1891, recently  underwent a refresh as part of a multi-year, $100 million renovation project. Crews modernized the railway’s depot, cogs, tracks and railcars.
