We were very pleased with the service provided by our travel consultant, Sofia. She was very prompt in replying to all our queries. We enjoyed the itinerary where different experiences were offered - various train rides and cruises. The hotels were good, all centrally located and spacious with very good breakfasts provided. Everything is planned for with detailed information, maps and vouchers. All we needed to do was present ourselves at the various venues. We felt assured that there is someone who knows our plans and who we could call upon should we require any assistance. I would definitely recommend Nordic Visitor to anyone who wants to go Scandinavia on a free-and-easy yet have all the hassle of planning taken care of.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scandinavia
You may have a few questions about your upcoming trip to Scandinavia, so we’ve collected and answered the most important ones for your convenience. Or, if you want to know more about our processes and payment details, check out our FAQ page .
1. What countries make up Scandinavia?
Scandinavia is a region in Northern Europe that is made up of Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The neighbouring countries of Finland and Iceland are technically 'Nordic' rather than 'Scandinavian'. But many people consider them Scandinavian because they share many cultural similarities.
2. Are Finland and Iceland in Scandinavia?
Scandinavia is typically defined as the countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Finland and Iceland are technically ‘Nordic’ countries as they are not part of the Scandinavian peninsula.
However, due to shared celebrations and cultural norms, both Iceland and Finland can loosely be considered Scandinavian in many ways.
3. Why travel to Scandinavia?
Imagine looking out to incredible views of endless fjords, visiting chic ‘Scandi-cool’ cities and enjoying the midnight sun by the many charming canals and harbours. Scandinavia is a brilliant destination for its balance between urban areas and nature reserves, and you benefit from the best of both with the opportunity to go on pretty hiking trails and sightseeing in the city.
It’s a feast for the senses as well, with colourful UNESCO heritage wharfs, cruises along the Baltic sea and literal smörgåsbords of delicious food. A long-time favourite of nature lovers, hikers, city breakers and fans of architecture, Scandinavia has activities and points of interest for everyone.
What's more, the region has been named by top publications as one of the best destinations to visit in Northern Europe this year .
If we’ve whet your appetite and you’re curious about the attractions here, then read our first-time visitor guide to Scandinavia .
4. Where to visit in Scandinavia?
Scandinavia has so many must-see cities and points of interest that it’s hard to list them all. Here are our favourite cultural hotspots and famous sights:
- Geirangerfjord, Norway
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Pulpit Rock or Preikestolen, Norway
- Bergen, Norway
- Gothenburg, Sweden
- Helsinki, Finland
- Oslo, Norway
- Stockholm, Sweden
- Flåm, Norway
- Tivoli Gardens, Denmark
For more information about exploring the region, read this handy guide on the best times and places to go , or check out the top Scandinavian cities to visit .
5. When is the best time to visit?
Scandinavia is stunning all year round and there’s plenty to see and do during each season. Pinpointing the best time for you depends on your preferences when travelling. For pleasant weather and extended hours of daylight, visit Scandinavia during the summer months.
Visit in the winter or shoulder seasons for a quieter trip with charming, festive sights. If the northern lights are your must-see, then we’d recommend checking out our Norway and Lapland packages.
For more information and travel ideas read our comprehensive guide on when to visit Scandinavia .
6. How to get around Scandinavia?
A popular option to travel around Scandinavia is via railway. Highly rated by locals, the trains are usually clean, comfortable and most importantly, prompt. The railway routes pass by stunning scenery making for an extraordinary “commute” and there are opportunities to stretch your legs on board.
Sailing from destination to destination on a cruise is also a great way to see Scandinavia, as each voyage will give you amazing views of coastal attractions such as the Norwegian fjords. For our cruise and train packages , we arrange all of the timings for you and tickets are booked before you arrive for peace of mind.
Another great way to travel around Scandinavia is by guided mini-bus tour. Unlike larger coach tours, our small group tours have a maximum of 16 people. You get to travel with a local guide who will show you their perspective of Scandinavia, and not just repeat what’s written in the guidebooks.
Scandinavia also has some of the best self-drive road trip routes in the world. You could see the countless islands of the Stockholm archipelago here, as well as seaviews from Hardangerfjord Bridge or vistas from the highest mountain passage in Norway, Sognefjell.
For more ideas on how to explore Scandinavia, check out our range of travel packages .
7. Can I choose the arrival date?
Yes you can choose your ideal arrival dates. We have a wide range of arrival options depending on the package and season. Our tours are all available to book online so once you’ve found your favourite one, you can choose the best dates for you. If you’ve already booked but need to change your dates, get in touch with your travel consultant to rearrange your bookings.
8. When should I book my flights?
We recommend that you book your package and wait for confirmation before you organise your flights as this ensures that your tour is secured and you have all of the correct timing information.
We advise checking flight times and dates beforehand so you can pinpoint your ideal tour dates. Get in touch with your dedicated travel consultant to move your tour dates if your flights change.
9. Can we add extra nights in some locations?
You can add extra nights at the start and end of all tours. For some tours, you can ask your consultant to add extra nights at destinations along the way as well. You can do this online when you book, or if you’ve already booked your package, contact your travel consultant as soon as possible to update your tour.
10. Can I customise a tour from scratch?
By booking one of our packages, you’ll enjoy fantastic accommodation, carefully planned routes and pre-booked activities. As well as this, we can personalise your itinerary with added nights at the start and end of your journey and, depending on the package, extra stops during your trip.
While we may not always build a tour from scratch, we will try our best to include any special sights or attractions you want to go to.
11. What should I pack to wear in Scandinavia?
Scandinavia is a region in Northern Europe, so the weather can be a little temperamental in most seasons. We advise that you prepare for all outcomes by packing the following:
- Warm jumper or fleece
- Thermal layers
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Small day bag or rucksack
- Binoculars
For more information on what to pack and wear, take a look at our handy Norway packing guide .

We thoroughly enjoyed our first trip to Italy and Zicasso's travel partner did a marvelous job putting it all together. They were able to get things set up promptly as it was under three months from the time we decided to schedule the trip to the departure date. During that time, it went from being just my husband and me to adding our three adult sons, and they helped readjust the schedule and budget to make it more affordable for five of us. All three hotels (Rome, Florence, and Venice) were excellent regarding location, cleanliness, and customer service. That we were American and were unfamiliar with Italian transportation because we had never been to Italy, it was extremely nice to have private transfers and all the train transfers set up. Even when we arrived by train in Venice, they had a person there to meet us and assist with transport to the water taxi, then walk us to the hotel. Everyone was professional, helpful, and on time. The tour guides were also wonderful and so well-educated. There were several modifications needed as we worked through the itinerary and changes to who was coming when, and our tour operator was very easy to work with on these. The only negative was that it was non-refundable if you needed to cancel in the 70 days before departure, even though many of the hotels stated refundable if canceled within a few days. Many tours I looked at and used on this trip could be canceled and refunded within 24 hours. I found this a much safer way to schedule tours and not lose out if there were any issues affecting our tour days. It's always a risk not knowing if someone in the group will be ill or injured and not able to participate. There is a $250 service fee for each change if the team needs to make changes once the final itinerary has been completed, so that does need to be taken into consideration. We were fortunate that we did not need to make any last-minute changes. I would strongly recommend our travel agency and will use them for our next trip.

From start to finish, our travel agency was exceptional, efficient, timely, and very thoughtful. Zicasso’s travel agent worked with us from the beginning to plan our dream trip to Sweden and Swedish Lapland, filling every day with a lifetime of amazing experiences and memories. When an unanticipated glitch popped up, the travel team was quick to help problem-solve with kindness and expertise, resulting in an even better trip. We would recommend them to all our friends and family for a once-in-a-lifetime trip!

I was very pleased with Zicasso’s travel company and the itinerary they put together for me, my husband, and two friends. I was a bit nervous to book travel to India through the company as I did not have any previous experience with them, nor did I know anyone else who had used their services. I initially reached out to the company in 2015. The agent assisted in creating an itinerary based on my list of "want to see and do". It turned out I wasn't able to go forward with the trip at that time and when I reached out to our agent eight years later, she picked up right where we left off! Our guides, driver, accommodations, excursions, and meals were outstanding. Everyone was punctual, very friendly, and super-communicative. Typically, we organize trips on our own, but I wanted assistance in this instance as we were four people in India for the first time and only had two weeks. The travel company took care of everything so we could truly experience the country rather than spend time trying to figure out logistics. It was the perfect blend of planned time and on-our-own time. I have recommended our travel planners to friends and family, and will definitely contact them for our next exotic adventure (can't wait!).
Expert Tips for Discerning Travelers
Sweden Tours & Holidays
Is it possible for a country to be too beautiful?
Because Sweden, if you’re listening, you’ve been awfully greedy. From the remote reaches of the alpine tundra to Stockholm’s scenic streets, beauty pervades every part of this country including, it would seem, the people. But let’s not be too shallow – there’s also the Viking history, the coffee culture, the Northern Lights and a legally protected freedom to roam that sees locals and those on a Sweden tour taking to the coast, to the hills, to the mountains and rivers in search of a little piece of paradise for themselves.

Culture and customs.
The Scandinavian countries – Sweden, Norway , Denmark – have had their cultures examined and re-examined over the past few years by disgruntled citizens of the world desperate to improve their lives. Everything from education to work to parenting has come under the spotlight and unfortunately there’s no resounding answer except, perhaps, this: be more Swedish.
Despite the modern world fawning over Sweden’s Swedishness, the Swedes are a humble bunch and don’t take kindly to arrogance and boasting. You won’t seem them going for broke at work either thanks to ‘lagom’, a Swedish word meaning ‘just the right amount’. They do what they need to do and get out, which is perhaps the reason for their enviable work-life balance, not to mention a world-leading amount of parental care on offer to mothers and fathers.
So what are the Swedes doing once they’ve done just the right amount? Probably drinking coffee. Sweden is one of the world’s biggest coffee consumers and the tradition of ‘fika’ is a cornerstone of the country’s culture. ‘Fika’ is a noun, a verb, a concept – a state of mind, even. It essentially translates as a break for coffee and cake, but it’s really an opportunity to catch up and socialise with friends and colleagues.
Like the rest of the Scandinavian countries, Sweden is big on the outdoors. The principle of ‘allemansratten’, or ‘freedom to roam’, is protected by law and this gives all people the right to be free in nature, meaning they can hike, camp, ski tour and forage wherever they like as long as they respect the land and its owners.
Whether the Swedes are meeting for a hike or having coffee at one of Stockholm’s galleries, you can bet that they won’t be late. Punctuality is key and contributes to the general politeness that pervades society so if you do happen to travel on a Sweden tour, keep an eye on the time.
History and government
Following the last ice age, Germanic tribes from Central Europe moved north into the southern regions of Sweden while the Sami indigenous peoples hunted in the north. These tribes grew over the next thousand years as technology advanced, with the economy coming to rely on fishing, farming and trade.
Scandinavia’s most well-known historical period is the age of the Vikings. The Vikings were fearsome warriors from Norway, Denmark and Sweden, equipped with fast yet sturdy boats that allowed them to raid the Baltic and European coastlines. Sweden had experienced a sudden population boom and needed to import goods to feed the masses and these imports were financed through mercenary activities.
The Vikings went as far as Constantinople and Baghdad, establishing trade with Byzantium, while some went on to establish Russia after conquering the Slavic tribes in the region. The ones that did return to Sweden were rich with gold, silver and slaves.
Christianisation and the Kalmar Union
The Viking age ended with the Christianisation of Sweden over the 12th century. Wars were fought with Denmark and Norway and crusades were led to the unconverted Finnish tribes across the sea, but Sweden would eventually join Denmark and Norway in the Kalmar Union, a response to the increasing power of the Hanseatic League on mainland Europe. This union, at the end of the 14th century, led to riches but it was Denmark that really ruled Scandinavia.
Regionalism increased over the following centuries and separatist parties were formed, which eventually rejected the rule of the Danish king in the 16th century. Sweden was then taken by force and Swedish nobles were executed in Stockholm, leading to a rebellion led by Gustav Vasa, who was named King of Sweden in 1523. Scandinavia was split into the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway and the Kingdom of Sweden.
Age of Freedom
Through the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries Sweden continued to wage wars and lost land in the Baltics as well as economic stability. The death of Charles XII, in 1718, ushered in an era known as the Age of Freedom, as in freedom from the dictatorial king. What the Swedes lost in territory they gained in intellectual progress and the reign of Gustav III, in the late-18th century, was a blessing for the Swedish arts with drama, opera and poetry becoming prominent expressions of Swedish culture.
World Wars and modern Sweden
At the outbreak of WWI Sweden declared itself neutral. This neutrality remained through WWII though much has been made of their decision to let German troops through to take Norway.
Following the war, Sweden introduced child care, unemployment benefits and more socially positive policies. The country went from strength to strength and has become a prosperous nation with strong systems in place to support its population. That said, Sweden’s decision to be a haven for those fleeing persecution has led to a real test of its welfare policies, which is currently coming to a political head.
The government is currently run by the Social Democratic Party, who have dominated the country’s politics for much of the past century, but the Sweden Democrats – a nationalist anti-immigration party – have seen a swift rise, mirroring far-right movements across Europe. As of 2020, they are set to become Sweden’s most popular party, and it remains to be seen what effects this will have on the country.
Eating and drinking
Okay, yes, Sweden is famed for its meatballs thanks to IKEA – an estimated 1.8 million meatballs are eaten daily across their global stores – but there’s more to Swedish cuisine than these glorious balls of bliss. Keep an eye out for these traditional dishes as you’re travelling through the country:
- Kanelbullar These cinnamon buns could be considered Sweden’s national snack and are a perennial favourite for ‘fika’ (coffee break).
- Princess cake This bright green cake became popular in the UK after appearing in the Great British Bake Off. It’s a sponge cake covered with marzipan and is popular at Swedish celebrations. It was created by a woman named Jenny Akerstrom who taught three of the Swedish princesses to cook. They loved it so much that she named the cake in their honour.
- Jansson’s Temptation This creamy potato and anchovy casserole is a stalwart of the Christmas season though the dish can be served at any time of the year. It was named after Pelle Janzon – a food-loving Swedish opera singer.
- Toast Skagen One day, apparently, a Swedish chef was sailing with a disgruntled crew and threw together some leftovers in an attempt to cheer them up. He ended up with prawns, mayonnaise, dill and lemon served on Swedish crisp bread and when they asked the name of the dish he looked across the water to Denmark, saw the town of Skagen, and named it: Toast Skagen.
- Smorgasbord The Swedish buffet has as many rules as it does ingredients. For the Swedes it comes naturally, but for the unsuspecting traveller, things can get confusing. Begin with herring and cheese (a smorgasbord without herring is a travesty), then move to seafood and gravlax. The third course is cold meats, pickles and salads, then the fourth is hot dishes like meatballs. A word of advice: go slow.
Plant-based options
Vegetarian and vegan restaurants are common in all major Swedish cities and most rural restaurants will also offer vegetarian options. Travellers who are heading north and spending time in traditional Sami areas may encounter more difficulty in finding vegan options in particular.
Geography and environment
Located in northern Europe on the Scandinavian Peninsula, Sweden is bordered by Finland to the east and Norway to the west, as well as the Gulf of Bothnia and Baltic Sea. It’s home to pristine rivers, areas of thick woodlands and forest, pure lakes and windswept islands – natural beauty is eminent here. Sweden actually has over 97,000 lakes, with the largest being Lake Vanern (complete with castles on its shores) and the most mysterious being Lake Storsjon, which is supposedly home to a Nessie-like monster.
The majority of the population lives in the south, away from the freezing cold temperatures and unforgiving terrain of the Arctic north. Here you’ll find Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo, Sweden’s three major cities, which are largely built with respect to the natural world and feature dedicated green spaces and waterways. Stockholm is actually built over 14 islands, with the city centre essentially on the water, while the land between Stockholm and Gothenburg is the agricultural heartland of the country with low-lying and fertile soils. The northern areas, home to the indigenous Sami population, tend to range from hilly to mountainous.
Given Sweden’s vast length and different latitudes, the weather varies depending on where you’re travelling, but when compared to other Scandinavian countries the rain in Sweden is not particularly abundant. This is thanks to the protection of the Scandinavian Mountains, which run along the Norwegian border, reaching their highest point at 2469 m (8100 ft). The summers tends to be warmer too, though the exceptions are, of course, are the northern areas past the Arctic Circle, which enjoy very low temperatures even in the summertime.
There’s no doubt that Sweden’s greatest gift is the outdoors. Your money is probably best spent getting outside and experiencing as much of nature as possible, or eating your way through some Swedish cuisine, but if you are intent on picking up a souvenir then the following gifts may be just what you’re after:
Hailing from the province of Dalarna, these painted horses have become an unofficial symbol of Sweden. They were traditionally carved by the men at home and then taken to the main workshop in the village to be painted. The traditional colour is red, but you can also find blue, black, white or skin-coloured horses.
Christmas decorations
The Swedes just know how to do Christmas – the snow’s a little whiter, the lights are a little brighter, and the decorations? They’re just really pretty, so go on and pick up an ornament as the perfect festive monument to your Sweden tour.
Sami handicrafts
The Sami people are the original Swedes, hailing from the northern regions. You can buy hard or soft handicrafts if you’re visiting Swedish Lapland and in other parts of the north. One of the best places is the Jokkmokk winter market, which is held over January and February and has been running for some 400 years. The handicrafts can be either hard or soft, with hard handicrafts like knives and cups traditionally made for men, and soft handicrafts traditionally made for women, like woven bracelets and other jewellery.
Festivals and events
The Swedes make the most of their long-awaited summer with a large number of music and cultural festivals being held all over the country.
National Day of Sweden
Held on June 6 every year, the National Day of Sweden celebrates two events. The first is the election of Gustav Vasa as king in 1523, and the second is the adoption of the new constitution in 1809. Celebrations are held around the country, while children present the royal couple with bouquets of summer flowers during a ceremony at Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum.
Midsummer Festival
Midsummer is perhaps the most important holiday in Sweden. It’s held in the middle of June and sees the Swedes take to the outdoors – parks, gardens, wherever – to eat lunch, sing songs, eat herring and drink schnapps. In other words, it’s Swedish people being incredibly Swedish.
Culture festivals
All three of Sweden’s major cities – Malmo, Gothenburg, Stockholm – hold cultural festivals in the summertime celebrating local and national arts and culture. Street parties, theatre, food and live music all feature.

Sweden travel FAQs
Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
When is the best time to visit Sweden?
The best time to visit Sweden is during the summer months from June to August. The temperature tends to drop towards the end of August, while July is the warmest month and June features the longest days. Sights and tourist accommodation will be open, though some businesses will be shut as the locals may be taking holidays.
If you want to visit Sweden in winter, perhaps to see the Northern Lights or to go dog sledding, keep in mind that the longest days occur in February. December and January really are very dark, but they do make for a pretty special holiday. Be sure to book everything in advance as many accommodation facilities will shut down during this period.
Is it safe to visit Sweden?
Yes, it is safe to visit Sweden. Travellers are advised to stay vigilant in cities as petty crime does occur, particularly in touristed areas, and to keep an eye on local news sources for updates on any planned demonstrations.
Given Sweden’s winter extremes, it’s also important to be wary of environmental factors when driving, walking or skiing. Roads and footpaths may be icy, and inexperienced skiers may find conditions challenging.
Do I need a visa to travel to Sweden?
Sweden is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Sweden, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement.
Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your country of origin. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information.
Is tipping customary in Sweden?
Though tipping is rare, leaving 10–15 per cent at dinner for good service is customary. Otherwise it’s not expected though it is, of course, appreciated.
What is the internet access like in Sweden?
Internet access in Sweden is generally very good in populated areas. Most hotels, hostels and cafes will have wifi, usually for free, as will most airports and stations.
In more remote areas, like Lapland, internet access may be more difficult to come by and have a relatively slow connection, but who needs it when there’s all that nature to explore?
Can I use my mobile phone while in Sweden?
EU residents can use their mobile phones in Sweden at no extra cost. Non-EU visitors wanting to use their normal SIM card will need to ensure their global roaming is activated before leaving home. Be sure to check any additional fees that may be incurred by your carrier.
Local SIM cards can be easily purchased and topped up in cities and towns around Sweden. Mobile phone coverage is excellent in the south of Sweden but will be patchy in the remote northern areas.
What are the toilets like in Sweden?
Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Sweden.
What will it cost for a...?

- Train ticket in Stockholm = USD 4 (one way), USD 16 (24 hours)
Can I drink the water in Sweden?
Sweden has some of the cleanest drinking water in the world and all tap water is safe to drink unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottle water and bring a reusable water bottle instead.
Are credit cards widely accepted in Sweden?
Visa and MasterCard credit cards are widely accepted in Sweden. In fact, you should be able to use card at the vast majority of shops, restaurants and hotels across the country, as well as for trains and ferries. It’s worth having a small amount of Swedish krona on hand just in case.
What is ATM access like in Sweden?
ATMs can be easily found in cities and towns across Sweden. Card payments are very common so even if you’re unable to find an ATM, you should be able to pay by card anyway.
What is the weather like in Sweden?
Sweden’s climate is more continental than that of Norway, meaning colder winters and warmer summers. That said, Sweden’s weather varies greatly depending on where you are, given the length of the country.
During winter, the temperature averages between 0 and -2°C (32 and 29°F) in the south, -10°C (14°F) in the north-central region, and -15°C (5°F) in the far north. Temperatures can drop much lower, however, when the cold air from Siberia moves east.
In the summertime the average temperature is quite similar across the country, usually around 21°C (70°F) in the north and reaching towards 28°C (82°F) in the south. Daytime in the south regularly sees temperatures climb above 30°C (86°F).

Is Sweden safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?
Sweden has long been known as a liberal and tolerant country. Same-sex married couples have had the same rights as those in heterosexual marriages since 2009. All of Sweden’s larger cities have thriving queer scenes, with Stockholm hosting the five-day Stockholm Pride festival in late July or early August each year. You can pick up the QX Magazine in Stockholm, Malmo and Gothenburg, which contains information on LGBTQIA+ happenings around the country.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.
Is Sweden accessible for travellers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
Sweden is a good destination for travellers with disabilities. Swedish Railways’ trains have lifts and seats for wheelchair users and most street crossings have audible signals for visually impaired pedestrians. Many hotels also have rooms with adapted facilities for those with mobility limitations. The Visit Sweden website contains more information on accessible sights and restaurants, while the Stockholm public transport website has information on travelling around the city by public transport, which is accessible to most people.
What to wear in Sweden
What you need to pack to wear in Sweden will depend on what time of year you are visiting. The winters, and often the shoulder seasons, are freezing, so it’s important to have a warm jacket, thermals, a waterproof jacket and waterproof shoes, as well as something to keep your head warm.
In the summertime the weather is lovely and light clothing or jeans should suffice, though it can still get quite chilly in the evenings.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?
Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance
How do I stay safe and healthy while travelling?
Intrepid takes the health and safety of its travellers seriously and takes every measure to ensure that trips are safe, fun and enjoyable for everyone. We recommend that all travellers check with their government or national travel advisory organisation for the latest information before departure:

Behind every good journey is a story.
Ours started in Iceland in 2002 with founder Ásberg Jónsson and co-founder Pálmi Jónsson. They turned their passion for exploration into Iceland’s first privately owned bicycle rental and tourist information centre in downtown Reykjavik.
Starting out with only a few staff in a tiny storefront, the start-up soon formed valuable business partnerships. This way, it provided guests more and varied ways to explore Iceland. It grew fast to include the neighbouring Nordic countries, then Scotland and the Alps.
We now have over 100 employees in our Iceland, Sweden, Scotland and German offices. And although we parked the bikes long ago, some things haven’t changed since our early days, including our commitment to high-quality, personal services.
Are you ready to create your own Nordic story? Start planning your next adventure.

Sweden FAQ's
The Scandinavian country of Sweden is officially known as the Kingdom of Sweden. It is the largest country in Northern Europe and is famous for the Northern Lights. The country attracts thousands of tourists each year from all over the world to view the spectacular lights and also be a part of the country`s other well-known activities. From music and food to fashion and tradition, this diverse country welcomes all with different types of views and backgrounds - the natural landscape of Sweden is amazing! Sweden is also considered among the cleanest countries in the world. If you have a sweet teeth, make sure to sample Swedish chocolates on your trip to Sweden. You`ll also want to partake in the well know coffee culture here. And we can`t forget the heritage from the Viking Age and the 17th-century Swedish Empire, the glamour of the Nobel Price and the county`s successful pop music scene.
If you are looking for some of the top cities to visit, you`ll want to make sure to check these out: Stockholm is Sweden`s capital city of 14 islands, the so-called `Venice of the North,` and the home to one of Europe`s best-preserved old towns. Gothenburg is Sweden`s largest port and industrial center, and second in population. Malmo is another top city, with a quarter million inhabitants; it is connected to the Danish capital Copenhagen by the Öresund Bridge. The three traditional lands of Sweden, Götaland , Svealand and Norrland , are further divided into 25 provinces, which largely define Swedish people's cultural identity. We have broken down some of these areas into regions, explained further below: Enjoy the diverse landscape of Southwestern Sweden . This region boasts varied coastline from rocky in the north to miles of sandy beaches in the south. Here you`ll find the town of Gothenburg , the gateway to northern Europe; Malmo , Sweden`s third largest city; the historic city of Lund ; and beautiful Trollhatten , to name a few. Sweden`s Bothian Coast forms a stretch of land that is quite unlike the rest of the north of the country. The entire coastline is peppered with towns and villages that tell a story of the faded history. You`ll also find many cities, like Gavle , Harnosand , Skelleftea , and Umeaa that are more typical of the region offering lively metropolises. Swedish Lappland is the rolling hills and the roaring rivers. It is the land of eight seasons, the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun. These vast woodlands and rural mountains make for the perfect region to explore new adventures. This is where you`ll find the ski resort town of Hemavan and Kiruna , the largest city in the world, in terms of geography. Southeast Sweden is a sleepy but peaceful place to visit. This region offers a rich history, evident in its medieval towns, cobblestone streets and `fairy-tale` castles. The southeast is also filled with nature: plentiful elk, large forests, a plethora of lakes, flowering meadows and long stretches of gädesgårdar (the timber fences typical of this region). You`ll also find towns such as Karlskrona , Jonkoping , and idyllic small town of Vaxjo .
Sweden has much to offer visitors any time of year and all season offer some great benefits. The country enjoys a mostly temperate climate despite its northern latitude, mainly because of the Gulf Stream, which also makes the temperatures vary considerably. Stockholm is warmer and milder, while in the mountains of northern Sweden, a sub-Arctic climate predominates. If you`re on a budget, you may want to avoid the summer months, which is the most popular season to visit. As a whole, the summer offers sunny days, but not too hot. July is the warmest month and February is the coolest month when temperatures in Stockholm average around 26°F. Winter months can be the best time to go to Sweden if you`re hoping to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights or partake in outdoor winter sports, which are a huge attraction to this country. While it`s up to the individual traveler to decide what most appeals to them, below you`ll find a general overview of what to expect throughout the year. If you are well prepared, you`ll have a wonderful trip regardless of the time of year. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Sweden .
We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.
By Train: The Swedish Rail can take you to all parts of the country. The national system is the Statens Järnvägar (SJ), the Swedish State Railways that offers an extensive railway network. MTR Express also operates several trains between Gothenburg and Stockholm. Because point-to-point tickets are quite expensive, for more train journeys, a Sweden InterRail (for European citizens) or Eurail (for non-European citizens) pass might be useful. Purchasing single journey tickets online in advance can also help save money, although the cheapest tickets often come with more restrictions. The national public transport carriers operate an alliance service called Resplus for multiple-leg travel. Regional public transport typically has a carrier per county. For instance, when travelling regionally in the province of Scania (Skåne in Swedish), one should refer to Skånetrafiken. For travelling in the region of [Mälardalen] (the "Lake Mälaren Valley"), you can check all train and bus operators at Trafik i Mälardalen. This regional traffic cooperation includes many of Sweden`s major cities, such as Stockholm, Uppsala, Västerås, Linköping, Norrköping, Örebro and Eskilstuna. By Bus: Rail lines cover only some of Sweden`s vast distances. Where the train tracks end, buses usually serve as the link to remote villages. Buses are often equipped with toilets, adjustable seats, reading lights, and a telephone. Fares depend on the distance traveled. Flixbus and Nettbuss runs a number of bus lines in the southern third of the country, Götaland and Svealand. They tend to cost less than going by train, if you can`t take advantage of SJ`s youth discounts. Y-buss, tapanis, and Härjedalingen operate between Stockholm and Norrland. City buses are operated by the counties` public-transport companies. If you plan to use city buses, check out the local arrangements for how to obtain tickets. In many Swedish cities it is not possible to buy tickets for the city buses at the bus. In this case neither cash nor bank or credit cards are accepted. Instead you need an electronic bus card, a special card for each region, which sometimes also has to be filled with a minimum amount of money, typically 100 kr. This bus card can sometimes be obtained only at dedicated ticket offices, not at the bus, but can often be filled with money for travel at local shops or refill machines that are found at public places. On long distance buses, passengers can normally buy tickets from the driver. By Car: Sweden maintains an excellent network of roads and highways, particularly in the southern provinces and in the central Lake District. Major highways in the far north are kept clear of snow by heavy equipment that`s in place virtually year-round. Current driver`s licenses from Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States are acceptable in Sweden. In regards to rentals, the major U.S.-based car-rental firms are represented throughout Sweden, both at airports and in urban centers. The companies` rates are aggressively competitive, although promotional sales will favor one company over the others from time to time. Prior to your departure from North America, it will be advantageous to shop around to find the lowest available rates. Membership in AAA or another auto club may enable you to get a moderate discount. Be aware that you may avoid a supplemental airport tax by picking up your car at a central location rather than at the airport.
The currency in Sweden is the Krona (SEK, often referred to as crowns in English). Once you`re in Sweden you`ll have to use the Sweden Kroner, US dollars are not accepted. There are currency exchange offices scattered throughout the city. However, you may not need much cash during your visit as you can pay with credit card for almost everything in Stockholm. Keep in mind that tipping is not mandatory in Sweden and service charges are almost always included in your bill. For more detailed information, consult our guide to tipping in Sweden.
The country`s written and spoken language in Sweden is Swedish. Sweden is considered to be one of the best English speaking countries in the world, except the countries where English is native. You will have no problem finding Swedes to speak English. However, we suggest you get a good guide book and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, please, thank you, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

Sweden Luxury Travel
Sweden reveals a soothing spa culture, Nordic culinary indulgences, exquisite design and all the fresh air you want.
At the new ABBA Museum, you become the fifth member of the group, virtually trying on costumes and singing along.
As old as the story of Sweden is – with its stone ruins, medieval cities, seaside castles, and Viking museums – there are new stories to be told, all part of your memory-making. Sweden is internationally recognized as the country of cool, design-forward to the nth degree as you’ve stepped into a home-decor magazine. Excellent design is everywhere – on the streets, in the stores, in the cafés, and the condos – never showy, always elegant. Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s old city, is packed with 17th- and 18th-century buildings, including the medieval Storkyrkan cathedral and the Royal Palace. Other inner harbor discoveries include the Vasa maritime museum with its 17th-century warship, the contemporary-art haven Moderna Museet, and the ABBA Museum. Seventeenth-century Drottningholm Palace can be found just on the outskirts of town. The port of Gothenburg on the west coast is warm and welcoming, known for its canals and broad boulevards, sculpted gardens, and craft beers. A proud fishing heritage is worn on its sleeve, evidenced by the plethora of seafood in fine-dining rooms and on street corners. The hip neighborhood of Haga is ripe for exploring, as is Slottsskogen Park with its manicured gardens and natural forest. In the northern Swedish Lapland, visitors escape to the rolling hills, rapid rivers and vast woodland for outdoor adventure – husky-sledding, ice-fishing, sailing and serenity, culminating in wood-fired sauna.

Welcome to visit moscow tours.
We provide authentic, informative and memorable tour packages and city tours, at very competitive prices. Visit Moscow Tours are available not only in Moscow, but also in other cities: Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Suzdal and Sergiev Posad. We also organise customised individual programs tailored just for you.
Our guests come in large groups, small private groups, as couples or as single travellers. We take care of and treat our guests with respect in a friendly and warm family environment. We show people our beautiful cities with passion and deep knowledge of their history, culture and traditions.
Our guides are extremely hospitable, helpful and well-informed. They are simply the best because only by providing the best services can we make the world fall in love with Russia. And we are very happy when our guests say that they will definitely come back to Russia and that they will tell all their friends how great Russia is! That is what inspires us to put even more dedication and hard work into our tours, knowing that what we do is positive and meaningful.
Our classic tours include tours of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, two main Russian cities.
Moscow is a big and busy megalopolis and Russia’s capital city, where more than 12 million people live and work. Our capital city is happening place; it is mysterious, elegant, luxurious, fashionable, clean and bright, with its unique legends, traditions and events. It is with great pride that we show the Red Square and the Kremlin, our Underground and Tretyakovskaya Gallery, among other stunning attractions.
Saint Petersburg is our second capital, the second largest city in the Russian Federation. This wonderful city has a strong and lively aristocratic spirit, uniquely Russian royal architecture, magnificent museums and theatres. Saint Petersburg bears the royal heritage of Russia, which can be felt in its air, its streets, parks, monuments, museums and citizens. In Saint Petersburg tours, we will take you to the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress, Faberge Museum and Orthodox Cathedrals. We’re sure you will love it!
If you have a few more days to spare, venture into the dreamy Russian countryside in Suzdal or Sergiev Posad. Suzdal is a small town with a population of about ten thousand people, situated on less than 15 square kilometres. This tiny area is home to 53 historic cathedrals, five monasteries and a kremlin. Church domes are visible like mushrooms from anywhere and everywhere in the town like in a fairy tale. No wonder Suzdal is called the ‘Town Museum”. It is definitely worth visiting!
Just try any of Visit Moscow Tours’ tour packages or any individual city tour, and we promise that you will want to come back to Russia again. Russia is huge with countless amazing places to visit. There are so many unique experiences to be had and energies to be felt that one tour is definitely not enough to explore this vast land. It is also a very safe destination to travel, and we have a tradition of warm hospitality. Our people adore and take care of visitors as our own guests, and even if they do not know your language very well, they still try to be helpful and hospitable.
Our guides will show you the most interesting attractions and historical places, taking you on a journey to the past to enjoy stories of medieval times, the Romanov monarchy, the Soviet Era. And of course, we will show you the contemporary life of our country through authentic local experiences.
We look forward to meeting you soon!

Why travel to Moscow
Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.
Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.
Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow
It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.
Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022
The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!
Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:
As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.
Culture & Convenience
For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.
Cheap as Caviar
In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.
We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead
